Ed Lauing, seeking reelection, is aiming for more transparency Councilman Ed Lauing wants the city of Palo Alto to be more transparent.

“We need to be telling people more, sooner,” Lauing said in an interview as he campaigns for a second term.

For example, Lauing said the city screwed up by putting out a survey on expanding the Palo Alto Airport into a duck pond when LAUING council wasn’t on board with that possibility.

Lauing criticized City Manager Ed Shikada for unilaterally replacing the city’s handcrafted, wooden park signs without going to council or the Parks and Recreation Commission first.

“Apart from the action, the process needs some attention. Because other folks should’ve known about it,” Lauing said about the signs.

San Mateo County’s agriculture production value grew by about $10 million in 2025 compared to the previous year, an increase largely led by a boost in the value of potted plants and flowers.

“Many people don’t realize just how important nursery crops are to agriculture in San Mateo County,” said county Agricultural Commissioner Koren Widdel. “They’re a big part of our economy.”

Widdel shared the “2025 County of San Mateo Agricultural Crop Report” to the Board of Supervi-

Starting Jan. 1, 2028, Californians ages 80 and older can opt-out of jury service permanently due to a medical condition, without needing a note from a health care provider.

The change comes after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1359 on Monday, which enables seniors to request a permanent exemption by attesting that they have an impairment that renders them incapable of performing jury service. Further medical documentation will not be required. Seniors who still want to serve on a jury can still do so.

Assemblyman Patrick Ahrens, a Cupertino Democrat, said he introduced

the bill after a constituent — Dianne McKenna, a former Santa Clara County supervisor — relayed to Ahrens the difficulties she faced helping her elderly husband get an exemption from jury service.

No set exemption age Unlike some other states including Florida and Texas, California doesn’t have a blanket age of exemption for jury service. It’s 70 in Florida and 75 in Texas.

Californians 70 years and older can be excused due to a medical impairment without a doctor’s note, but they still must inform the local jury’s office that they’re unable to serve with a written excuse for a one-time exemption.

Starbucks agrees to end DEI quotas Starbucks agreed yesterday to pay Florida $1 million and end race- and sex-based DEI quotas and preferences in employment practices nationwide under a sweeping settlement to end a civil rights lawsuit against the coffee giant.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier’s office said the agreement applies to all Starbucks operations nationwide, not only the company’s locations in Florida.

“Every Floridian deserves to be hired, promoted, and compensated based on merit, qualifications, and character — not race or sex,” Uthmeier said. “This resolution ensures that Starbucks’ policies and practices fully comply with Florida’s civil rights laws.

DEI can never be an excuse to violate civil rights.”

Uthmeier sued Starbucks in 2025 for violating the Florida Civil Rights Act through racial and sex-based goals, quotas and preferences in its policies.

From the outset, Zafeer and Anastasia built the

agency around a two-sided definition of success: compassionate care delivered with dignity, and gainful, respected employment for the caregivers providing it. A year later, that definition hasn’t shifted. What has sharpened is Zafeer’s sense of where the real differentiation lies.

For one client recently discharged from a rehabilitation facility, the differentiation looked almost invisible: he’d run out of laundry detergent and had no way to get to a store. Zafeer picked some up himself and dropped it off. No invoice, no fanfare. Stories like this reflect what he considers the most gratifying part of the work — closing the distance between tasks that are trivial for him and genuinely prohibitive for an elderly client living alone.

Under Zafeer and Anastasia’s leadership, care at their agency has grown into something closer to a standing relationship than a transaction.

New clients get a phone call after the first shift, a supervisory visit after the first week, and a checkin every other week after that — revisiting the care plan, the hours, and whether the caregiver fit is still right. It is a deliberate rejection of what Zafeer calls the “send a caregiver and forget it” model.

Being a newer agency, he argues, is actually the advantage: they’re still young enough to stay this hands-on.

That philosophy extended into the moment Zafeer calls the most meaningful of his first year. A veteran paying privately for care was struggling to keep up with the cost. Zafeer and Anastasia introduced him to the VA Home Health Aid program — and when the family felt too intimidated to walk into the local Veterans Service Office alone, the Khans went with them, sat through the meeting, and helped set the appointment. All the family had to do was show

up. The hours were approved about a month before we spoke, and the client can afford consistent care again.

In 2026, Zafeer is still building his leadership style in real time, having spent 17 years in corporate America before this. He describes unlearning the rhythm of being handed direction, and learning instead to give caregivers and office staff alike “just enough direction” to succeed on their own terms. His approach to trust follows a similar logic: assume the best in people until proven otherwise, and when someone underperforms, look first at what might be happening in their life before escalating. He says it works in 99% of cases. Even as the agency grows, he returns to one guiding principle, offered without embellishment: do it from the heart.

Zafeer and Anastasia’s message to other leaders in this field is direct: follow your guiding principles, be ethical and honest, stay true to yourself — business will constantly hand you chances to cut corners, and those catch up with you. And to anyone still stuck in the wrong fit, his challenge is simple: never give up looking.

Health RFK Jr. hails new tack on vaccines

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. gave the keynote address yesterday at a conference of an anti-vaccine activist group he once chaired, telling the hundreds in attendance that they had a friend in President KENNEDY Trump’s White House.

It was Kennedy’s first time appearing at the Children’s Health Defense conference since he became secretary.

Kennedy took leave from the group when he launched his bid to become president in 2023, but his speech yesterday served as a sort of homecoming,

offering him a platform from which to hail the administration’s steps to scale back vaccine guidance and reassure the activists in attendance that he was working to turn their priorities into policy.

“Let me be clear: You have a strong and steadfast friend in the White House.

We’ve accomplished in 19 months things that would have seemed unthinkable two years ago,” he said.

The speech, peppered with questions about long established vaccine safety, also highlighted how once fringe views on vaccines have been given a prominent pulpit under the Trump administration.

A Tribute to “Puppy”:

Bonnie’s Fur Angel Bonnie Regalia, owner of Birder’s Garden in San Carlos, lost her beloved dog of 14 years, “Puppy,” in July. To honor his memory, she ran an obituary in the Daily Post.

Puppy’s journey to finding a home with Bonnie is a moving story. On a Sunday morning in July 2012, a Chihuahua was dumped out of a car on Mesa Verde, near Bonnie’s home. A neighbor called to tell Bonnie her dog was out on the street. Bonnie replied, “I don’t have a dog anymore,” to which the neighbor

responded, “Well, he’s going to get hit.” In hindsight, Bonnie believes the abandoned dog was searching for her. Using a crate and accessories left over from a previous Chihuahua, Bonnie brought him home for the night, intending to bring him to her store to find a customer to adopt him. She was never able to let him go. His name, “Puppy,” was his own choice; after weeks of trying different names, “Puppy” was the only one he responded to. After being abandoned, Bonnie rescued him. In turn, Puppy filled her heart with love and provided a steadfast, devoted friendship for 14 years.

This month, Bonnie received a wonderful surprise: a painted portrait of Puppy delivered to her store by a kind stranger.

“The painting is so beautiful,” Bonnie said. “It even shows his hair and captures his spirit and his soul.”

She is deeply touched and grateful that Puppy’s memory has resonated with so many people.

Bonnie shared the donor’s identity with the Post on the condition that it remain anonymous.

The donor was inspired to commission the portrait after reading Puppy’s tribute in the paper. “I was moved to tears by Puppy’s obituary,” she shared.

“I know an artist in Ukraine who has painted many portraits of friends’ animals over the years. She’s extremely talented.”

Bonnie Regalia never gets easier.” She believes that animals are smart and great connectors, and if we realize that and learn from them, we can become better people.

She has since asked Bonnie to send a photo of herself holding the portrait so it can be shared with the artist in Ukraine.

Bonnie noted that she never took photos with Puppy, having a “mother’s mentality” where she was always behind the camera rather than in front of it. She recently had one holding his portrait.

Having recently lost her own 18.5-year-old cat, the donor understood the grief of losing a pet. “I wanted to surprise Bonnie, which I guess I did. It

‘Flower Power’ artist Peter Max dies at 88 Peter Max, whose colorful, psychedelic pop art expressed the optimism of the “flower power” movement of the 1960s and graced everything from postage stamps to a cruise ship, has died at 88.

Max died on Monday, the statement said. No cause was given, but he had been suffering from advanced dementia.

Max began his career in graphic design in the 1960s, and his swirly, colorful, instantly recognizable designs

epitomized the era’s “flower power” art. But thanks to his prolific output and fun, accessible style, Max’s work remained popular well into the 21st century.

Max was the official artist for the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the Indianapolis 500, the World Cup, the World Series and many other events. His art appeared on a Boeing 777 airplane and a Norwegian Cruise Line ship. His portrait subjects ranged from U.S. presidents to Taylor Swift.

A hearing on Beri’s mental health diversion is scheduled for Oct. 20. If the diversion is approved by a judge, then Beri would go to therapy and take medication rather than getting a criminal sentence.

Beri started noticing his own manic symptoms in May 2024 after a botched hair transplant, and his wife had to call 911 during an incident a month later, Callaway said.

He’s been in and out of the hospital during manic episodes, and he didn’t take his mood stabilizers for several days leading up to his arrest on Dec. 6, 2025, Callaway said.

A neighbor called police to report that Beri was playing his music too loud, and Beri went for a drive and ended up at Garrod Farms Estate Winery in Saratoga.

There, Beri allegedly lit cardboard on fire, resulting in a fire that was three feet long and six inches tall on a picnic table, Schon said.

After the winery manager told Beri to leave, Beri “began to dance and chant” and threw wine bottles at employees, Schon said.
