Schools to hire outside auditor BY BRADEN CARTWRIGHT Daily Post Staff Writer

Palo Alto’s new superintendent is hiring an outside auditor to verify that the board needs to make $33 million in cuts next year, but the auditor won’t recommend positions or programs for the chopping block. “There are questions around the district’s projections, estimates, budgeting process,” Superintendent Jason Glass said on Tuesday. “We’re committed to as many reviews of this as possible so that we get to a place where everybody has faith and confidence in the numbers that we’re talking about.” The audit comes after candidate Avery Wang criticized the district for spending $563,414 on a math skip test and $56,599 on two sushi machines. “I’m convinced there’s a lot of waste,” Wang said in an interview last week. But the audit isn’t about what positions or programs the district should consider eliminating, Glass said.

California’s High Speed Rail Authority paid nearly $600,000 in unallowable travel expenses to “questionable locations that appear unrelated to state business,” including trips to gyms, a nightclub, an escape room, a tiki bar and a cigar lounge over a two-year period, according to an investigation by the inspector general that oversees the agency. The report found that the agency routinely reimbursed consultants for trips that were unauthorized or poorly justified. Some consultants flew firstclass and were reimbursed without questioning, in violation of contracts and state policies. One consultant flew his private plane from Washington, D.C. to California and was reimbursed for a premium fare.

Matt Rocco, spokesman for the high-speed rail authority, said in a written statement that the agency “takes these findings seriously” and will fix the issues. The inspector general reviewed $1.15 million out of more than $2 million in travel reimbursements to four outside consulting firms between 2024 and 2026. The OIG said the firms are KPMG LLP, a global financial consulting firm; Nossaman LLP, a national law firm; AECOM-Fluor Joint Venture, which manages and coordinates the authority’s projects, and SYSTRA/ TYPSA Joint Venture, which provides tracks and systems design. None of the firms immediately responded to requests for comment.

Ed Sheeran’s tour of North and South America was plunged into chaos when four of his supporting acts abruptly quit in solidarity with the rapper Macklemore, who was dropped for making pro-Palestinian comments onstage. Hours after Sheeran MACKLEMORE posted on social media about Macklemore’s ouster and attributed the decision to the tour’s promoters, Irish acts Aaron Rowe and Beoga, the Danish band Lukas Graham, and Finneas posted on Instagram that they were leaving the tour. Rowe and Lukas Graham would have been replacements for Macklemore on

Sheeran’s remaining U.S. dates, while Beoga had been performing several songs — including some the Irish folk band co-wrote — with Sheeran around the middle of each set. Finneas, who is Billie Eilish’s brother and collaborator, was due to tour with Sheeran in South America later this year.

“American Idol” is leaving Hollywood for Georgia after 25 seasons, where production costs are lower due to tax breaks, the website Deadline reports. While California offers tax benefits to producers, they’re not as generous as those offered by Georgia and other states. And California doesn’t offer any breaks to “traditional reality, game shows, talk shows, or docufollow television programming,” to quote the law.
