Nine hours after parents gathered yesterday to protest leadership at Sequoia Union High School District, the district’s board proposed “norms of civil behavior” it expects the public to follow.

People who disrupt public school meetings already face a $500 fine. The proposed rule defines civility and examples such as not interrupting and considering other viewpoints.

“It’s always a good reminder to mimic the behavior that we expect our students to be doing,” said board member Mary Beth Thompson.

The board did not vote on the policy yesterday.

No one from the public commented on the board’s civility proposal, but a group of eight parents gathered earlier in the day at a Sequoia High School to demand the board oust Superintendent Crystal Leach.

Sheriff’s deputy charged Man’s death followed fight in abuse of 5-year-old

A San Mateo County sheriff’s deputy has been charged with abusing his 5-year-old son, KTVU reported yesterday.

Deputy Steven Romero allegedly made his son jump rope for not eating breakfast within a 15-minute time limit at their Livermore home in March, KTVU reports.

When the child didn’t jump quickly enough, Romero allegedly choked him multiple times by his mouth and neck and dragged him into his room by his ear, leaving visible bruising, Alameda County prosecutors allege. The boy was taken to a hospital, where a doctor concluded the injuries were from physical abuse, KTVU reports.

Romero’s law enforcement certification is temporarily suspended, a state database said yesterday.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office told KTVU that Romero has been on leave since April 2025.

In a written statement, the agency said the allegations were brought to its attention during Romero’s ongoing leave, emphasizing that the alleged felony occurred off-duty in Alameda County. The sheriff’s office has launched an internal investigation.

Romero has requested a mental health diversion, which the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has opposed, KTVU reports.

Records show Romero has been treated at a specialized recovery program for first responders since June, with a diagnosis including alcohol and cannabis use disorders, PTSD, and major depression. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.

A Menlo Park man died hours after being struck in the face during an intoxicated altercation in East Palo Alto, a prosecutor said yesteday.

Footage from the Sept. 3 altercation shows Andres Alberto Henriquez Gomez, 52, being hit near his upper lip and nose by Angel Lopez Ibarra Jr., 53, of East Palo Alto. They were speaking before Ibarra assaulted him and both of them were intoxicated, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

After the assault, police found Henriquez Gomez suffering from “significant” facial injuries.

He was taken to Stanford Hospital where he died around 5 p.m., police said.

Yesterday, Ibarra was charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault resulting in great bodily injury, Wagstaffe said.

Ibarra has been convicted of eight felonies in San Mateo County since 1991, Wagstaffe said. The past convictions include negligent use of a firearm, vandalism, possession of methamphetamine and selling narcotics and marijuana, according to the DA. Ibarra will be back in court on Sept. 22 and is in jail on no bail status.

Apple introduces its folding phone

Apple yesterday unveiled its latest generation of iPhones, including a widely anticipated foldable version called Duo. The company’s new CEO, John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook on Sept. 1, introduced the latest lineup at the company’s Cupertino headquarters.

After cycling through other updates to the iPhone, the Apple Watch and AirPods, Ternus told the audience inside the Steve Jobs Theater that “actually there is one more thing,” in a nod to the trademark phrase from Jobs.

The foldable phone has the “largest display ever on an iPhone, yet fits into your pocket,” Ternus said.

Fire behind store knocks out power

A fire behind a business at Grant Park Plaza in Mountain View led to a power outage for some residents, the fire department said yesterday.

Firefighters were called to the shopping center at 1040 Grant Road at 3:27 p.m. on Tuesday where they found flames in and around an enclosure for three electrical transformers and the main electrical switch gear for a number of the stores there, according to fire department spokesman Robert Maitland.

The fire was under control by 4:19 p.m. and did not damage the businesses, according to Maitland.

Power outage PG&E turned off the power to the transformers, resulting in about 400 buildings losing power, according to Maitland. As of yesterday, the power remained out at three of the businesses while PG&E works to determine the extent of the damage to the transformer.

The origin and cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the estimated damage to the structure is about $100,000, according to Maitland.

The exhibition, which ran through Sept. 1, featured artwork created throughout the artists’ lives and incorporated their passion and personal stories. The closing reception was held Sunday, Aug. 30 at the Palo Alto Art Center and included live harp music, refreshments and many opportunities to mingle and appreciate art in diverse media, from painting and Li Li photography to Sr. Exec. Director jewelry and textile art. The artists were residents of Palo Alto Commons’ independent living, assisted living and memory care communities.

“Our Resident Art Exhibition Closing Reception at the Palo Alto Art Center was a wonderful celebration of creativity and community,” said Palo Alto Commons Executive Director Li Li. “Residents, families, local seniors, Mayor Vicki Veenker and property owner Bill Reller joined us to celebrate our talented resident artists.”

Founded in 1990 by Bill Reller and his late wife, Carolyn, Palo Alto Commons is passionate about creating opportunities for residents to remain active, engaged and connected. Resident artists whose work was displayed at the arts center included:

“The Uprising” starts as a true story of medieval England in the grip of economic revolution. That’s good stuff. Then it gets inexplicably hijacked by an origin story for one of the West’s most popular folk heroes.

That’s head-scratching stuff.

Paul Greengrass’ movie mixes fact and fiction in such an anachronistic, uncomfortable way that it undercuts the movie-maker’s initial populist scream and ceases to hold its historical power, like air escaping a deflated balloon.

It begins with a simple farmer — played with unflinching commitment

by Andrew Garfield — plowing his marshy plot in east England in 1381.

It builds to the blood-soaked streets of London, where this simple farmer’s demands helped put the mighty British crown in real jeopardy during the Peasants’ Revolt. Then it turns out the farmer is Robin Hood. What? “The Uprising” might be 2026’s worst case of cinematic overreach.

Pandemic inspiration Greengrass has said he was inspired to write and direct “The Uprising” following the pandemic, recalling how the Black Death plague of the late

Stanford revoked its application four days before the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors was set to vote on the permit.

San Mateo County pushback The pushback included a coalition of San Mateo County officials, including then-Supervisor Don Horsley and County Manager Mike Callagy, calling on Stanford to pay its fair share in housing to the county, which half of Stanford borders on.

The coalition sent a letter to lobby Stanford and Santa Clara County to give the coalition its fair share of funds to mitigate the impacts of the expansion. In that letter, the group asked for $196 million to build affordable housing in the county.

This time around, Stanford says it will commit to $100 million in funds to pay for affordable housing in the area, transportation and other requests from its neighbors.

Didn’t opt for Belmont Outside of the GUP plan, Stanford has looked at other ways to expand outside of Palo Alto, notably in Redwood City with its 2016 approval for a 1.5 million square foot annex campus.

Stanford had been in talks with Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont to take over the campus at 1500 Ralston Ave., but opted not to buy the property because finding an academic department to move to Belmont would “take significantly longer than we initially planned,” Stanford said in an unsigned statement at the time.

Stanford is hosting a virtual meeting tonight about the GUP at 5:30 p.m.

Fire district plans local 9/11 memorial

After 25 years, a 9/11 memorial is in the works to commemorate the Menlo Park Fire Protection District members who helped with recovery efforts at Ground Zero and to remember the lives lost, said retired fire chief Harold Schapelhouman.

The memorial will be combined with the Oklahoma City Bombing memorial located at the fire district’s training center near Dumbarton Bridge. The Urban Search and Rescue Team, or California Task Force 3, was deployed following both terrorist attacks, Schapelhouman told the Post.

The memorial will not be finished by 9/11’s 25th anniversary tomorrow, but the team has started working with a structural engineer to begin the process, according to an unsigned statement from the task force.

As part of a settlement agreed to in May, Sequoia Union High School District paid $325,000 to the plaintiffs and began requiring district employees who work with students to attend annual antisemitism training, among other changes.

Lawsuits against the district was a theme among the parents yesterday. They said litigation fees paid

by taxpayers could be avoided under better leadership.

“We all have different stories and different reasons for being here today, but it all comes back to one thing: failed leadership,” said Sequoia parent Johanna Mahal.

Spektor also spoke out against the district’s decision to reduce the number of honors classes for 9th graders.

Leach’s response Leach did not address the recall effort or calls for her removal at last night’s school board meeting. In a statement sent to the Post, she said the board is focused on expanding opportunities for students.

“I understand that community members will not always agree with governance decisions, yet I hope some level of understanding for the decision will grow with time,” she said.

Saying “enough is enough,” Steve Hilton said he wants to get rid of the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Rallying in front of a DMV office in West Hollywood on Tuesday, the Trump-endorsed Republican candidate for governor said he wants to abolish the department by transferring its functions to a combination of online services and local county offices. If elected he would also cap the annual vehicle registration to a flat fee of $73.

The message has echoes of former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 2003 campaign, when he blasted Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” at rallies and rode Californians’ anger over former Gov. Gray Davis’ increase in vehicle license fees to victory.
