The Palo Alto Police Department has released a video of an officer using a taser on a man at the Stanford Shopping Center, bringing him to the ground and fracturing a vertebrae in his neck.

The video from July 19 shows the man sitting on a bench and arguing with an officer and a security guard after they woke him up and told him to leave the mall.

The man got up, walked toward the officer and threw his hand out.

The officer told the man to back up and asked if he wanted to go to jail.

¢ Roberta Ann Uebbing ¢ Roberta Ann Uebbing, longtime resident of Palo Alto, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, August 26. She was 89.

Roberta was born and raised in Fairmont, Minnesota, the eldest daughter of Robert Flynn, a wholesale grocer, and Anna Flynn, a music teacher.

She had a typical midwestern childhood on Bud Lake Drive, where her house backed onto a lake on which she and her father fished. She attended parochial schools and Fairmont High School before receiving a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from Creighton University in Nebraska. She received a master’s in microbiology from the University of Minnesota, after which she moved to Palo Alto to work in the Stanford research laboratory of Halsted Holman.

While attending an event at the Stanford Catholic Alumni Club, she met John Uebbing, a Ph.D. student in electrical engineering, whom she married in 1966.

Their daughter Mary Frances was born in 1969 and their son Jack in 1970. After a few more years working in the lab, Roberta became a full-time stay-at-home mom. However, she kept busy volunteering at her children’s school, including serving as PTA president.

She was active in the Palo Alto branch of the American Association of University Women and served on its board. When her children were older, she earned a degree in early childhood education and began working at Windmill Nursery School in Portola Valley. She also taught piano and Kindermusik at her home.

Music was one of Roberta’s passions. She was a talented pianist who accompanied school performances, played Christmas carols in church, and performed regularly at the Filoli estate in Woodside. Later in life she volunteered with St. Vincent de Paul, distributing food and helping to provide housing for those in need. She and John also traveled frequently to Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

Roberta will be remembered for her keen intellect, her dedication to her family and church, and her kind, gentle manner.

She is survived by her daughter Mary Frances, son-in-law Lawrence, and granddaughters Flora and Madeline. She was predeceased by her husband, John, and son, Jack.

A funeral Mass will be said for Roberta at Our Lady of the Rosary Church Friday, September 11 at 9:00 AM. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

An annuity company rated A+ by AM Best will issue an annuity for up to 40 years.

¢ Harlan Harkness ¢ Harlan Harkness passed away on August 28, 2026, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He will be lovingly remembered as a kind, gentle soul who believed in maintaining a positive attitude.

Harlan was born in Napa, CA. Eventually, his family moved to San Francisco, where he attended kindergarten through high school. Starting in his youth, Harlan embraced his family’s passion for sailing and all things that were water related. He participated in competitive swimming in high school and college; and also started playing water polo while attending San Francisco State University. After graduating Cum Laude from San Francisco State, he earned a master’s degree at Stanford University in 1963.

Harlan spent 5 months in the US Army reserve in 1968. He followed up this service with doing shorter periods of service in the summer, spread over 5 years.

Upon graduating from Stanford, he spent his entire 39 year career teaching at the Palo Alto Unified School district. He primarily taught high school PE, but he also taught Business Law and Adaptive PE. He coached soccer, swimming and girl’s softball. But for Harlan, teaching Adaptive PE was his first love. Working in this area meant he taught students ranging in age from Kindergarten through 21 years old.

Another love of Harlan’s was water polo. He coached water polo for years at Palo Alto High School. Before retiring, he started refereeing water polo in the Peninsula area south of San Francisco; and continued refereeing in northern and southern CA after retiring.

Starting in 1991, Harlan and his wife, Kathy, shared their love of playing tennis, golf and traveling. Life was good, and we felt blessed to have found one another and to be able to share a wonderful life together.

Harlan is survived by his daughter, Catherine.

Harlan requested that there be no funeral or memorial service held.

Goodbye is not forever; farewell is not the end. It simply means I’ll miss you until we meet again.

See you on the other side, Harlan.
