IRAN LOSING STRAIT: Iran appears to be losing its grip on the Strait of Hormuz while traffic through the critical waterway has exploded by nearly 400% over the last two weeks — as ships increasingly use a U.S.backed corridor to cross. Nearly 200 ships navigated the strait last week, up from 150 the previous week and just 40 two weeks earlier, according to data from the UK Maritime Trade Operations Center.

The city of Menlo Park may follow in the footsteps of Palo Alto by removing parking along part of El Camino Real to make way for bike lanes. The bike lanes, which would be separated from car traffic, would be added to El Camino between the Palo Alto border and Roble Avenue, with parking removed along that stretch. The reconfiguration is just one option the city is considering for El Camino, and a plan has not been finalized. City Council will hear an update on El Camino Real tomorrow. Opinion School district pulls candidate’s ad

6

Daily Post Monday, August 24, 2026

Email: letters@padailypost.com

Well that was curious. On Friday, the Post began working on a story about how Linda Henigin was getting a helping hand with her Palo Alto school board campaign from the school district itself. The district had posted an ad on its Schoology website saying the Henigin campaign was looking for student interns. The ad was part of a slide deck under “innovation-agility/work-experience” and it was Dave slide No. 19. Price The ad had the headline, “Join Our School Board Campaign.” The ad said the hours would be flexible. The ad didn’t say what Henigin would be paying, but the minimum wage in Palo Alto is $18.70 an hour. We started calling people on Friday to find out what was going on. Was the school district going to endorse Henigin? After all, she’s the candidate who seemed to be on the side of maintaining the status quo while her two opponents, John Craig and Avery Wang, are the reformers in the race. Then, on Saturday, the ad disappeared from the website. Maybe they figured out at 25 Churchill that it’s illegal for the school district to assist a school board candidate’s campaign. You may recall that

the $65.5 million price, why not show the voters? If council decides to keep the appraisal secret, people will assume that the city is overpaying for the property.

It’s now a police tax?

The ad that appeared on the Palo Alto school district’s Schoology website.

in 2022, the vice chancellor of the San Mateo County Community College District, Jose Nunez, was arrested and later pleaded guilty to two felony counts for unlawfully using district computers and time to back a local board candidate and support bond measure. Second political ad removed Another ad had been removed from the Schoology site too. On Page 10 of the slide deck, there had been an ad seeking interns to work on the campaign pushing the Cubberley sales tax known as Measure J. That ad also represented a conflict of interest for the district. If the sales tax is approved, the city would send $65.5 million of the money raised to the school district to buy seven acres

FREE EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS EVENTS

of land at the Cubberley Community Center. So the school district certainly has a reason to help the measure’s campaign — more like 65 million reasons. Both ads disappeared. Very curious.

Where’s the appraisal? Speaking of the Cubberley sales tax, the city still hasn’t released the real estate appraisal that city council used when it decided to pay the school district $65.5 million for the Cubberley land. I don’t get the council’s thinking on this — why would they give the voters the impression that they’re hiding a key piece of information in this transaction? If the appraisal justifies

Editor Dave Price’s column appears on Mondays.

PROFESSIONAL PROPERTY MANAGEMENT

BE PREPARED, STAY INFORMED! Monthly Classes

Another problem with Measure J is its title — the “Community Safety/ Services Measure.” That makes it sound as if the city is raising the tax to improve community safety. In previous campaigns, the term “community safety” has meant police and firefighters. Cubberley isn’t going to be a big police station — we just built one of those — or a fire station — there’s a new one under construction just up the street from Cubberley. Using the term “community safety” is misleading. Maybe the city is saying that if they remove the sidewalks at Cubberley and replace them with ones that are even, it will be safer. Or maybe they’re saying that if they replace the buildings built in the 1950s, the place won’t be as a fire prone. But really, calling it a “community safety” measure is a stretch. Why should voters trust the city when they play silly tricks like this?

OPINION A conflict of interest

Dear Editor: I was at a loss for words when I read that Palo Alto’s new superintendent, Jason Glass, had no clue that it was improper to hire his spouse as a teacher in the school district which he has been tasked to run. That the superintendent did not consider hiring his wife as an employee would constitute a conflict of interest is troubling. A basic tenet of any workplace, be it in schools, the courts, or in businesses, is that you cannot supervise those with whom you have a close personal relationship, such as a spouse. That he didn’t realize that he could not hire his wife only after reading the district’s policy leads me to question his competency to preside over our district. Equally disquieting was the assertion of school board member Shounak Dharap that the board “may want to revisit the policy because it’s valuable to have a superintendent whose family is involved in the community.” Seriously?! I encourage Superintendent Glass, Mr. Dharpa and his fellow board members to immediately undergo a training on conflicts of interest. LaDoris H. Cordell Palo Alto Retired Superior Court Judge

Mosque field trip

Dear Editor: Sometimes people reveal more about themselves than they realize when they write letters to the

editor. Azmat Malik’s letter last Monday bemoaning criticism of Palo Alto High School’s mosque field trip says a lot. The First Amendment to the Constitution was intended, in part, to insure that nobody either boosted their own religion or degraded others in favor of theirs with governmental support. The rows of raised posteriors of people blocking public thoroughfares while praying, and Muslim politicians and religious leaders openly preaching the superiority of Islam to the Constitution, shows the importance of the First Amendment. Azmat Malik suggests we should cancel Christmas, New Year and Thanksgiving. He concocts a peculiar combination of things that should be eliminated from history lessons like Hitler, the Holocaust, the Crusades and rabbis. What, no Imams? Learning about religions and cultures is fine. But as Dave Price’s accompanying column pointed out, when that “education” includes a talk by Zahra Billoo, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) San Francisco Bay Area, that’s asking for trouble. Billoo’s CAIR is the Muslim Brotherhood’s “smiling” face in our country — evil incarnate. We don’t have to pretend history didn’t happen, but our children don’t have to learn it from hateful bigots either. And if parents did sign off, you can be sure there was no full disclosure because no sane parent would subject their child to hateful propaganda like that. Desmond Tuck San Mateo

First-time DUI offenders spared

updated version of the legislation Legislators gut bill anemerged, and it effectively killed a key provision to start requiring the devices to require ignition for thousands of first-time offenders. interlock devices Lawmaker arrested for DUI

A California Senate committee just gutted one of the state’s most substantial DUI reform bills in years, despite support from other lawmakers and families of drunk driving victims. The bill would have required in-car breathalyzers for anyone convicted of a DUI, bringing California in line with most states. State law currently only requires the devices, SEN. CERVANTES called ignition interlock devices, after repeat offenses or injury crashes. State Sen. Sabrina Cervantes, D-Inland Empire, and chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, provided a hint of changes earlier this month when she said there were amendments to the bill that had been approved unanimously by the committee. Last week,

Cervantes was arrested for a DUI in a high-profile incident in Sacramento in May 2025. The District Attorney’s Office did not prosecute her after a blood test showed no drugs or alcohol in her system. Cervantes then sued the city of Sacramento and several of its police officers, alleging that police fabricated evidence and falsely arrested her. Cervantes’s sister, state Assembly candidate Clarissa Cervantes, has herself been convicted of two DUIs in Southern California. Previous bills have failed For years, lawmakers have tried and failed to require in-car breathalyzers for all DUI offenders. Justice reform groups and the DMV have opposed similar bills, citing fears about unfairly penalizing poor DUI offenders, high costs and the DMV’s aging technology.

This program is selective. To be considered, an individual must meet the following criteria, consistent with Medicare home health eligibility standards: • Homebound status • Qualifying skill

• Physician-certified plan of care • Coverage gap or unmet need

• Residing within our service area We welcome inquiries from patients, family members, physicians, and care coordinators.

BIG NEWS, More kids getting LOS ALTOS! vaccine exemptions Dr. Todd Anhalt is now a part Vaccine exemptions among U.S. kindergarteners hit a new high in the 20252026 school year, rising to 4.2% as vaccination coverage slipped for every childhood vaccine tracked nationally, according to new CDC data. The exemption rate climbed from 3.6% the previous school year. Declines for all vaccines At the same time, vaccination coverage declined across the board. National coverage ranged from 92.0% for DTaP to 92.4% for MMR and polio. Coverage for MMR, DTaP, polio and varicella fell in more than half of states. The data also show gaps beyond formal exemptions. About 280,000 kin-

dergarteners attended school without documentation that they had completed the MMR vaccine series.

Harder to limit outbreaks Overall kindergarten vaccination coverage declined by about 0.1 percentage point from the previous school year. Public health officials often cite the need for very high vaccination coverage — roughly 95% for measles — to limit outbreaks, and the new figures show nearly half of states now above a 5% exemption rate, a level that can increase the risk of clusters of under-vaccinated children where outbreaks spread more easily.

CHP makes arrest in deadly local hit-run

The CHP was able to solve a hit-andrun fatal accident on Highway 101 in East Palo Alto because the driver’s license plate fell off during the crash. Irma Elizabeth Oxlaj Vargas, 38, of Redwood City, was killed at 6:05 a.m. Thursday in the transition lane from University Avenue to southbound Highway 101. The CHP believes she was hit by an Acura TL driven by Julian Adame Jr., 18, of the Central Valley town of Kingsburg. The license plate led officers to

an abandoned Acura TL on Leota Avenue near Vargas Elementary School in Sunnyvale. That helped them track down Adame in Cutler, Tulare County, where he was arrested at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, the CHP said. Officers took Adame to the San Mateo County Jail where he was booked on felony charges. Investigators are trying to determine whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the fatal crash.
