Warm weather typically drives salad sales, but consumers spooked by the deadly cyclospora outbreaks are avoiding lettuce this summer.

Traffic to Chopt Creative Salad Co. locations fell 24% on July 18, right after the FDA announced the outbreak, according to Placer.ai data.

Sweetgreen on Thursday said consumer concerns about the outbreak had about a 6 percentage point impact on same-store sales in July, and the company cut its full-year outlook. Also last week, the upstart chain Salad and Go filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and closed all of its locations, saying the

cyclospora outbreak had exacerbated its existing business challenges.

Grocery stores aren’t immune either. Dollar sales of prepackaged salads plunged 14% during the four weeks ended July 25 compared with the yearago period, according to NielsenIQ data.

A Dermatology Practice That Puts Patients First

Obtaining the medical care you need can be a demoralizing experience. Long wait times for appointments and hours spent in uncomfortable waiting rooms. Protracted, anxious delays to get biopsy results. When Greg Morganroth, MD founded Palo Alto Dermatology Institute, he wanted to reverse that trend and focus on offering his patients a superior experience.

A nationally recognized skin cancer, Mohs and cosmetic dermatologic surgeon, Dr. Morganroth began his career in 1995 in Mountain View and then spent 30 years building up the largest physician-owned and controlled dermatology in the country, with 48 California locations. If patients wish, they can look through the microscope themselves. “For clinically obvious non-melanoma skin cancers, we turn the standard three office visits and weeks of delay for diagnosis and treatment into a few hours,” said Dr. Morganroth. “ Patients fly in from Las Vegas, New Jersey and Phoenix for same-day treatment. Aron’s attorney Brian O’Neill said on Wednesday that Aron has returned the money to Chow, and Aron provided a copy of an email from Chow confirming receipt.

O’Neill said he expects the lawsuit to be dismissed. He didn’t have information about Dvorkin’s case.

The project was completed and sold into a down market and didn’t turn a profit.

“When that happened, we made a decision: our investors would be made whole on their principal, and any shortfall would come out of our own pocket rather than theirs. That commitment stands,” Aron said.

Science fiction movies like “The Terminator” portray robots as deceitful, murderous or soul-less threats.

Lifelike faces and synthetic skin trigger unease, playing on our worst fears.

Sometimes humanoid armies turn on their creators to exterminate humanity.

The fear of robots has reached the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, which on Tuesday may take the first step in regulating these machines.

Ironically, governDave ment has played a starPrice ring role in advancing robotics.

Government has raised the minimum wage to levels that are unaffordable by many small businesses. As a result, many businesses want to bring in robots to take orders at a fast-food counter or stock a warehouse.

A machine might cost a lot up front, but over time it’s cheaper than a human. And you don’t have to deal with unions, the county’s Labor Standards Enforcement Office or an HR department.

If you think about it, government officials and union bosses are the best sales people for the robotics business.

Robots will be designed and built somewhere in the world. Wouldn’t it be better if it were San Mateo County instead of South Korea?

Instead of fighting the robotics industry, the county supervisors on Tuesday should direct County Manager Mike Callagy to come up with a plan to entice robotic startups to move to the county. Have Callagy find out what these companies would want to move here. If any regulation is needed, work with industry to come up with rules that don’t stifle innovation.

In recent years, the county has lost Oracle, a major employer and tech leader. Just over the county line in Palo Alto, Tesla moved its headquarters and much of its R&D to Texas.

Some of the reasons they left can’t be changed by county officials — high state taxes and oppressive regulations. Dear Editor: There’s Lee and then there’s Lee. Some Los Altos residents want to change the name of “Lee Street” because they assume it’s named after the Civil War Confederate general. That’s probably a safe assumption. But, henceforth, it doesn’t have to be.

We are celebrating the 250th anniversary of our country. Going forward, we can assume and proclaim that Lee Street is not named after a Confederate general but rather it is named after two founders and signers of the Declaration of Independence: Francis Lightfoot Lee and Richard Henry Lee (the “American Cicero”).

Richard Henry Lee (an opponent of the slave trade) contributed the following clause to the Declaration: “That these united colonies are, and of right ought to be free and independent states; that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved…”

Thus, the issue can be resolved. And at no cost to the city for new signage and cartographical revisions.

Dear Editor: The eight-month jail sentence imposed on former San Mateo County Community College Chancellor Ron Galatolo has shaken all confidence in our local judicial system.

Galatolo was found guilty on eight felony counts involving perjury and tax fraud. Both the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office and the Probation Department recommended a state prison sentence.

Dear Editor: It is important for Palo Alto residents to know who will benefit from a renovated and improved Cubberley when the Palo Alto Community Safety/Services Measure, which will be on the ballot in November, passes.

Everyone who visits Cubberley will enjoy renovated facilities and more green space than it currently offers.

More specifically, these groups will benefit: • Children and families: The Palo Alto Recreation & Wellness Center, a top priority of the Palo Alto Parks and Recreation Master Plan, will make Cubberley its home. Its mission is “to offer a true recreation wellness experience to children and families for generations to come.”

• Parents with preschool children: As new housing is built in south Palo Alto, a growing population of young families will increase the demand for local, affordable care. The space that a renovated Cubberley will provide will help meet that demand.

• Seniors: Avenidas will be able to return more senior services to Cubberley.

• Makers: MakerNexus, currently in Sunnyvale, wants to move to a renovated Cubberley. That move will significantly increase local resources for youth currently using limited makerspace at Cubberley.

Passing the measure in November will mean the entire city of Palo Alto can benefit from Cubberley as “a vibrant, beloved, and adaptable destination that promotes learning, interconnectivity, joy and wellbeing where all cultures and generations belong,” to quote from the Conceptual Master Plan.

Data center slipped by public in Gilroy

The Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon Web Services is building a $2 billion data center in Gilroy with no public hearings and no mention in the San Jose Mercury News until the construction cranes had gone up.

The Merc’s first story in June was published after the community had discovered on its own that they were getting a 438,500-square-foot data center.

No public hearings The Amazon project at 8050 Camino Arroyo, near the Leavesley Road interchange on Highway 101, stayed under the radar because it didn’t require public hearings, Planning Commission reviews, or a City Council vote, the Wall Street Journal points out.

Three years ago, on July 3, 2023, Gilroy’s community development director, Sharon Goei, quietly green-lit the project with a single administrative signature. Because it was handled as a routine staff-level approval, there were no public agendas or contentious council meetings to draw the attention of the public or the Mercury News.

The project also was able to avoid public scrutiny by adhering strictly to local industrial zoning rules established in 1981. Because the 56-acre plot of farmland was long designated for heavy industrial use along the Highway 101 freeway, Amazon’s application automatically qualified for a fast-tracked, legal path that bypassed the contemporary public-notice framework.

public comment window quietly ended in September 2024. Because AI and massive data center resource strains were not yet dominant local talking points in 2020–2024, the administrative filing slipped through without drawing flags from residents or local watchdogs, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Cranes and heavy machinery did not physically appear at the Camino Arroyo site until April, after building permits were finalized in March. Only when the massive structure began rising next to the Gilroy Premium Outlets did residents realize what was being built.

Bank offers weight-loss drugs to all employees

Weight-loss drugs are becoming a popular employee perk, with almost a third of workers saying they’d switch jobs to get GLP-1 coverage. Now, Bank of America is offering the drugs to all of its employees.

The bank is spending $250 million annually on the drugs for its employees — and CEO Brian Moynihan says the upside is well worth it.

“What we see is a great impact on the employees,” Moynihan told CNBC. “We’ve always been about mental wellness, physical wellness.”

It’s part of a wider $2 billion a year wellness packaged for employee health at the $436 billion bank. Staffers may have to cover the premium or co-pay

for their GLP-1s, but the Wall Street titan is picking up the rest of the bill, amounting to nearly a quarter of a billion dollars annually.

“It’s lowering near-term incidents of heart issues for people taking, even if they don’t have all the attributes,” the CEO continued. “That’s the payback.”

Long-term benefits The chief executive even acknowledged that Bank of America may not fully realize all the long-term benefits.

He noted that some Bank of America staffers on GLP-1s may not see the health upsides until later in life, years after they’ve left the company, but he still believes in the investment.

Someone in the group is scrolling a restaurant’s menu, hunting for any mention of tree nuts or shellfish. They don’t find it and send a message out to the group chat saying, “Not sure I can eat here.” Ten minutes later, the plan has shifted to a different restaurant.

The restaurant never finds out: There’s no reservation to cancel and no order abandoned mid-checkout. The table that would have come simply never appears on the schedule.

According to new research from Nutritics, a recipe and menu management platform for restaurant and food service operators, that vanishing act has a price tag. A survey of 1,000 adults who

dine out regularly found that unclear allergen information puts an average of $78 in table spend at risk every time an allergy-affected diner picks somewhere else instead, a pattern that scales to an estimated $12.6 billion in missed revenue across the U.S. restaurant industry each year.

The $12.6 billion problem is bigger than the allergy-affected diner alone.

Sixty-one percent of respondents say their restaurant choices are shaped most often by someone else’s allergy: a family member, a spouse, a friend or a child in the household. Only 39% say it’s their own allergy driving the decision.

“This would increase male students’ vulnerability to grooming and sexual abuse by predators including McCray,” the suit said.

McCray took his male students to ball games, parks, picnics and parties without other adults, the suit said.

The former students said McCray designated them as his assistants and then sexually assaulted them in his classroom during lunch and at his apartment after school.

Officers found tens of thousands of photos of young boys in Murray’s apartment and bank safety deposit box, and Murray admitted to destroying at least four times more, the suit said.

The sex ring lasted 10 years and involved hundreds of young boys from Palo Alto, Los Altos, Campbell, Cupertino and Santa Clara, the suit said.

District 5 Supervisor Margaret Abe-Koga, whose district includes Palo Alto, Mountain View and Los Altos, got the smallest amount: $444,469.

Bill restricts Flock cams

In the past year alone, they’ve helped catch suspected murderers, bank robbers and hit-and-run drivers. They’ve located dozens of stolen cars and helped send a wildland arsonist to prison.

They’re also distrusted and despised by privacy rights activists on the left and on the right. Just last month, police accused a suspect in Monterey County of yanking down three of them with his pickup.

They’re called automated license plate readers or ALPRs. As drivers go past these cameras, they capture and read plate numbers, then cross-reference them with law enforcement databases of vehicles police want to locate, such as stolen cars, getaway vehicles or those that may be carrying a missing or wanted person.

Limits on saving data Since 2019, California Democratic lawmakers have unsuccessfully sought to restrict how police use the technology. They’re trying again this year with a bill that would add limits on how long police may retain license plate data, how they access it and with whom they share it.
