One Breed e One World Welcome to the 2018 Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh Federation (FSFF) membership directory! I am offering many of the same comments I wrote last year because I strongly believe they are accurate and on target.

This directory is your resource to some of the best Fleckvieh genetics in the world and the breeders whose lives focus on this great strain of Simmental cattle. We, the breeders, have common threads woven in our fabric that bind us together:

• Dedication to industry excellence,

• Keen focus on the continued improvement of our seed stock herds, and

• Determination to enhance the commercial cattle industry through strategic infusion of Fleckvieh genetics.

Fleckvieh Simmental cattle are among the most adaptable cattle in the world. They are found in the colder climates as well as in hot and humid conditions. They are a dual purpose breed with excellent milk and carcass qualities. The females have the maternal characteristics cattlemen desire in their herds. Fleckvieh bulls add quality and pounds to weaned calves. Perhaps the greatest reward to using a Fleckvieh bull is the replacement heifers he sires.

While we, Fleckvieh breeders, understand the tight profit margins of today’s beef industry, we also understand that continued enhancement of all cattle herds demands that we:

• Collaborate with each other to enhance the genetics of our own herds,

• Work with established owners of commercial herds to place Fleckvieh genetics in their herds for enhanced

growth and increased value of replacement females, and

• Promote and support the next generation of cattlemen and women, as they are the future of this truly

universal breed of cattle.

As President of the FSFF, I am pleased to share with you a recent vote by the Board of Directors. The FSFF will extend complimentary, 1 year memberships to first-time buyers of any Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh animals. Free membership opportunities are to be reported to the FSFF Coordinator by phone or email. We look forward to growing the Federation not only in numbers, but also in interest.

FSFF Membership

The FSFF operates as a nonprofit marketing organization to promote Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh cattle worldwide to purebred & commercial producers. The FSFF is not a registry association but cooperates with the American Simmental Association, Canadian Simmental Association, and other similar registry associations.

Annual FSFF memberships are $100/year and include a complimentary farm or ranch listing on our online Breeder Listing page and in our annual Membership Directory. Memberships are due each January for the annual period of Jan 1 through Dec 31. Renewal forms are mailed to members with the annual directory each January. Member applications are also available on the Membership page at www.fleckvieh.com.

The FSFF maintains an online presence with its website and Facebook page. Members may submit event dates for inclusion on the FSFF’s Calendar of Events page and/or sale announcements to be posted on the FSFF homepage. Members are also encouraged to use our FSFF Facebook page as a means to advertise Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh genetics by posting news, events and/or photos.

FSFF Promotional Booth

The large, 3-panel FSFF display booths travel with members to many shows & sales in the U.S. & Canada! Visitors receive copies of this membership directory and other promotional materials and are able to visit with FSFF representatives. The booths allow the Federation to introduce and promote Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh to large numbers of producers who otherwise might never give Fleckvieh a second thought. Get your first ever FSFF T-shirt!

We are excited to offer two FSFF t-shirt designs for $15 each! Shirts can be ordered in youth sizes small, medium & large. Adult sizes are small through 3XL. Pictures of the shirts, color options and an order form are posted online at www.fleckvieh.com. The printer requires a minimum order quantity of 12 shirts, so the FSFF will place orders monthly or quarterly depending on actual paid orders received. An order form will also be mailed to members each January.

Fred Schuetze Award

The FSFF established the Fred Schuetze Award to recognize breeders who have made a significant impact on the Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh breed. Fred Schuetze was instrumental in the creation of the Federation and served as a long standing FSFF President; his dedication to the breed is unwavering, and the recipients of this award are equally appreciated for their contributions.

The FSFF accepts nominations for the Fred Schuetze Award year round. Nominees need not be FSFF members, and the award may be presented posthumously. Each spring, the FSFF Board of Directors votes on the nominees, and the award is presented in May at the Buzzard Hollow Ranch Designer’s Classic sale.

The FSFF proudly presents the 2017 Fred Schuetze Award to Darrel & Joyce Maronda, owners of D. Maronda Simmentals in Lomond, Alberta. Jason Bruketa (JB Livestock Company) was kind enough to share with us these thoughts: “Travelling south and east of Calgary and into the heart of the flat farmland of southern Alberta, there is an unmistakable sweetness in the air. It is the perfect compliment of blue skies, warm winds and miles upon miles of purely agricultural land. When I was a younger man, travelling to this part of Alberta meant one of two things: I was either looking at cattle or playing slo-pitch. And when I was looking at cattle, I was looking at the famous herd owned by Darrell and Joyce Maronda called D. Maronda Simmentals.

With a population of 166, Lomond is a small community, but it is certainly not small on character. Building on that small town feel of camaraderie and friendship, are the timeless personalities of two of its long-time residents, Darrell and Joyce Maronda. Darrell and Joyce were married in 1961 and have been by each other’s side ever since. Through thick and thin, and from the ground up, they have worked together, built together, earned together and shared together. Theirs is a journey of fortitude, resilience and good humour.

With CSA membership #943, Darrell and Joyce are true pioneers in the Simmental industry. Their first involvement dates back to 1973, and their commitment to the breed never wavered. In fact, Darrell has always been a fan of Fleckvieh and most breeders in the industry can easily picture the muscling, capacity, and easy fleshing ability of breeding stock associated with the DFM prefix. DFM created a certain type and this branded product is one that has proven profitable for many breeders in the industry. One can find the DFM prefix in countless pedigrees. It has a reputation for adding value; the ROI from DFM genetics has proven unmistakable.

My first communication with D. Maronda Simmentals was a telephone call I made back in 1989 as a 16-year-old kid. I remember being extremely nervous at first talking to this well-known cattleman but also remember how quickly Darrell made my inquiry important to him. I think he and I both knew I could not afford the heifer I was inquiring about, but he talked to me as though I would be the volume buyer. I will never forget that. In a matter of minutes, I was quick to learn Darrell’s passion for Fleckvieh cattle, his commitment to youth, and his completely unsurpassed joke-telling ability (few can tell a joke better than Darrell Maronda and even fewer will laugh harder at it). That phone call would be the first of many over the years. Incidentally, I could not afford to buy that particular heifer calf, but over the years, I purchased many cattle from D. Maronda Simmentals, and the impression I had from that first phone call has had a lot to do with it.

I consider myself fortunate to have had the benefit of receiving guidance from some wonderful mentors over the years. I would be remiss not to include Darrell and Joyce in this capacity. From Darrell and Joyce, I have learned the value of teamwork, the benefits of complimentary personality traits, that hard work will eventually pay off, to stay the course once a decision is made, and to smile even when it’s easier not to.

I have learned and continue to be reminded that the purebred industry is not just a cattle business but is also a people business. If success in this industry is measured by being good ambassadors for the breed and also by being good to other breeders, D. Maronda Simmentals are good, successful people. They are among the very best.

Congratulations to Darrell and Joyce for this recognition and receiving this prestigious Fred Schuetze Award. It is well earned!”

The NAILE venue offers members the opportunity to showcase Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh cattle and allows the FSFF to promote Fleckvieh genetics to thousands of producers & visitors in the barns! The NAILE is also an excellent place to get your start in the show ring; if you have ever considered hauling to show, we encourage you to come out & get your start here with us! We have a show for the youth, a show for the Fullblood Simmental breeders and a show for those using Fleckvieh genetics in a crossbreeding program all in one day!

Cattle, semen, embryos, and/or flushes are all welcomed consignments. This is a highly advertised, well attended, prominent sale. If you are looking for an opportunity to market your cattle, take the time to consider this sale!

2nd Annual Fullblood Simmental Show at the 2017 Dixie National Livestock Show & Rodeo The 2nd annual Fullblood Simmental Show was held in February at the 2017 Dixie National Livestock Show & Rodeo in Jackson, MS. Participants were also invited to consign to the Simmental/Simbrah sale. Many thanks to the the following exhibitors for participating & displaying an excellent set of cattle: Steven Ausburn, Layne & John Rivers Brown, Little Creek Farm, TNT Simmental Farm, Triple S Simmental Farm & Warren/Stone Wallace.

The Dixie Nationals is another large and well organized event. The FSFF display booth and the quality cattle exhibited by FSFF members provide yet another outstanding opportunity for us to promote Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh cattle to a large number of livestock showmen and producers. Those working the FSFF booth reported another year of inquisitive and attentive visitors!

The 2018 Fullblood Simmental Show and Simmental/Simbrah Sale info will be posted online near the end of the year at www.dixienational.org and www.fleckvieh.com. Whether you come to show or sell or simply meet & visit with Fleckvieh breeders, we hope you will make plans to attend!

FSFFjr Membership

FSFFjr membership is open to those twenty-one (21) years of age and under as of January 1st of the membership year. Dues are $15 per calendar year. The application & payment can be completed online or may be mailed to the office.

Scholarship opportunities are available to qualifying students who have been FSFFjr members for the previous two years!

2017 FSFFjr Photo Contest

FSFFjr members were allowed to submit up to (4) entries of “Farm Life” or “Fullblood Simmental/Fleckvieh Cattle” photos taken in 2017 to be judged at the FSFF Annual Meeting & Events held at Little Creek Farm in Starkville, MS. A panel of 3 judges selected the Grand & Reserve photos in each division. Additionally, everyone in attendance was allowed to vote for his/her favorite overall photo, and the entry with the most votes was awarded the “People’s Choice” award. Winners were announced at the start of the Magnolia Classic Sale, and cash prizes were award to:

FSFFjr Educational Scholarship

As breeders, cattle enthusiasts and agriculturists, we know youth are the future of our industry. To better serve & support our youth members, the FSFF is proud to announce the creation of the FSFFjr Educational Scholarship!

The FSFFjr scholarship fund evolved from concept to reality in October 2016 with the donation of four frozen genetic lots sold during Little Creek Farm’s Magnolia Classic Sale. Building on that success, the FSFF offered a special Fleckvieh “Herd in a Tank” consignment in Little Creek Farm’s 2017 Magnolia Classic Sale. The sale of this semen tank & 200+ units of Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh semen generated $2,400! 100% of both fundraisers benefited the FSFFjr Educational Scholarship Fund!

Application Information

The annual FSFFjr scholarship application deadline is September 1st and is open to all eligible applicants worldwide. The list of complete qualifications, submission requirements and the application itself can be found on the FSFFjr page at www.fleckvieh.com.

The number of available scholarships & award amounts may vary by year. The FSFF planned to award the first $1,000 scholarship in November 2017, but regretfully, no applications were received. We look forward to receiving our first applications in 2018!

Endowments

Please consider supporting the FSFFjr Educational Scholarship Fund with an endowment. You determine the amount and length of commitment. Your farm or ranch will be recognized on our website and in print in the annual membership directory. Contact the office for more information!
