Greetings from the Host City Coordinator

Greetings National Training Institute Attendees!

Welcome to the 2021 Virtual National Training Institute (NTI), "Training Matters- Roadmap to Securing Your Career Goals." I bring greetings as Region XI's First Vice President and Host City Coordinator for this year's Virtual NTI. COVID 19 has turned our world upside down and changed the way we live our everyday lives, forcing us to move to a virtual environment for our NTI for the first time in the history of this organization. Thanks to technology, COVID 19 has not stopped us from virtually enhancing our careers or from taking care of the organization's business. This past year and a half have shown us just how uniquely resilient we are as a people and as an organization that has promoted equity, excellence, and opportunity for nearly 50 years. The NTI, originally scheduled to take place at the Gaylord National Hotel located in National Harbor, Maryland, sits just about 15 minutes from Downtown Washington, D.C., the U.S. Capital Building, the White House, Black Lives Matter Plaza, and the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. A backdrop for several historical moments like Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech, the Million Man March, and most recently as the Biden-Harris Administration marked the solemn moment as we remembered our friends and family lost from this once in a lifetime global pandemic. There are several other monuments and Smithsonian museums in downtown D.C., including the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Our National Office of Blacks In Government, located at 3005 Georgia Avenue, NW, is a few miles from downtown D.C. and just a short walk from the historic Howard University. My story started in that same city, nearly 36 years ago, about 3 miles east of the White House and U.S. Capitol Building. Growing up in our Nation's capital in the late '80s and 90's I had no idea of the significant transformation happening around me, nor did I fully understand how vital my city, my hometown was. I attribute most of my learning about the city to my great- grandmother, grandmother, and mother, who I would accompany on many occasions throughout the city to shop and visit family members. I distinctly remember riding the bus and Metro (our subway system) all around the city, visiting historic neighborhoods like Anacostia, where my mom grew up, Georgetown, Congress Heights, Petworth, U Street, and Columbia Heights. So much has changed in and around the city, and I still find myself pleasantly surprised as I now drive around this city that helped raise me and see how it has progressed and developed. When you believe that it is safe for you to do so, I implore you and your family to come and visit D.C. and take in all of the sites that make this city and the DMV (D.C., Maryland, and Virginia) so unique. I often call D.C. the “biggest little city” that you will ever visit. Although we are not gathered in person this year, I hope you will take this week to secure your career goals by attending the many workshops. Courses this year include Career Development, Communication Skills, Diversity Management, EEO, Human Resource Management, Health Awareness and Wellness, Information Technology, Leadership and Management Skills, Personal Performance/Quality of Life, and Technical and Professional Skills. Please check out the course booklet for specific class titles and descriptions. Please also take advantage of virtual networking opportunities at the Special Enhancement Programs (SEPs) offered throughout the week. These SEPs are a great way to network with your colleagues and fellow BIG members virtually. Once again, welcome to the YOUR National Training Institute. I look forward to networking virtually with each of you throughout the week and seeing you in person next year in Cleveland.

Blessings, Stephan Mathews
