Welcome to the 16th Annual Blue and Orange Dinner Dance and Scholarship Awards program. Each year we recognize members of the Southern Maryland community who are change-makers. In addition, we celebrate students who have chosen to attend the National Treasure, Morgan State. Your attendance here tonight shows your commitment to Morgan and all Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
To our honorees, we recognize you and your dedication to the communities you serve tonight. You lead by example and your selfless acts of service are commendable. Harriet Tubman’s motto, “Keep going” embodies the lives you all lead. Congratulations and enjoy your evening.
During Alumni Day 2023, President Wilson gave his vision of Morgan State. The campus continues to grow, enrollment is up, and Morgan is set to receive more than $100 million in grants, contracts, and gifts this year. In 2024, The Magnificent Marching Machine will travel to France to become the FIRST HBCU marching band to perform at the D- Day 80 Normandy Parade. Please check out all the latest about the GREAT Morgan State University, at morgan.edu. Morgan is, “Growing The Future, Leading the World”!
For more information on the D- Day Parade and supporting Morgan’s Magnificent Marching Machine, please visit https://givetomorgan.org/msuband_to_normandy
Dr. Jorim Reid, Director of Bands: jorim.reid@morgan.eduIn closing, I would like to take a moment and acknowledge my co-chair, Mr. Robert Riddick. You are truly my “right-hand man” and no words could express my gratitude. To the Blue and Orange Dinner Dance Committee, thank you! Finally, to the Southern Maryland Chapter members, your dedication to a successful event.
Thank you for supporting the Southern Maryland Chapter and The National Treasure!
Rochelle Savoy, M. Ed. Chapter President Class of 2002During the summer of 2004, Reverend George DeFord and other Southern Maryland Morgan State University (MSU) graduates convened several meetings to gauge the interest in forming a local alumni chapter. An initial organizing meeting, which attracted 15 MSU alumni, was held on October 16 2004, at Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Indian Head, Maryland. At a subsequent meeting on November 20, 2004, the following individuals were elected to office:
President Rev. George DeFord
Vice President R. Wayne Barnes
Treasurer Charles Simpson
Secretary Vera Walton-Merritt
Financial Secretary Joan Chapman
Corresponding Secretary Victor D. Watson
Historians—Thomas Datcher and Aaron Mathis
Chaplain Rev. Ed Williamson
With 17 members in attendance, the Chapter was officially chartered on May 14, 2005 during the annual business meeting of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association.
Through the awarding of scholarships to prospective Morgan State students from Southern Maryland, health related outreach and awareness activities in the community, Adopt A Road, partnering with other MSU entities such as Patuxent Environmental and Aquatic Research Laboratory (PEARL), the Chapter has successfully lived up to its mantra: Come Back Give Back. It is our sincere desire to continue to provide support to our Alma Mater and to the communities in which we reside and work.

Fair Morgan, we love thee, so tried and so true
Our hearts at thy name thrill with pride
We owe thee allegiance, we pledge thee our faith, A faith that will ever abide.
~ ~ Chorus ~~We pledge thee our love; we pledge thee our faith, Whatever the future may bring. And thus our devotion, fidelity too, And homage we pay as we sing.
Fair Morgan, as onward the years quickly fl y, And thou livest in memory sweet. We bring thee our laurels whatever they be, And lay them with joy at thy feet.
