HISTORY OF THE SOUTHERN MARYLAND ALUMNI CHAPTER

During the summer of 2004, Reverend George DeFord and other Southern Maryland Morgan State University (MSU) graduates convened several meetings to gauge the interest in forming a local alumni chapter. An initial organizing meeting, which attracted 15 MSU alumni, was held on October 16 2004, at Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Indian Head, Maryland. At a subsequent meeting on November 20, 2004, the following individuals were elected to office:

President Rev. George DeFord

Vice President R. Wayne Barnes

Treasurer Charles Simpson

Secretary Vera Walton-Merritt

Financial Secretary Joan Chapman

Corresponding Secretary Victor D. Watson

Historians—Thomas Datcher and Aaron Mathis

Chaplain Rev. Ed Williamson

With 17 members in attendance, the Chapter was officially chartered on May 14, 2005 during the annual business meeting of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association.

Through the awarding of scholarships to prospective Morgan State students from Southern Maryland, health related outreach and awareness activities in the community, Adopt A Road, partnering with other MSU entities such as Patuxent Environmental and Aquatic Research Laboratory (PEARL), the Chapter has successfully lived up to its mantra: Come Back Give Back. It is our sincere desire to continue to provide support to our Alma Mater and to the communities in which we reside and work.

Greetings:

It has been a pleasure to serve as the president of Morgan State University Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter (MSUSMAC) for 10 years.

Throughout those years it has been a joy to watch the chapter continue to grow and flourish. Because of the tireless efforts of our leadership, members and supporters MSUSMAC has established a presence committed to community service in the southern Maryland area, provided scholarships for students to pursue higher education and contributed to the overall success of Morgan’s National Alumni Association.

Although this letter marks the end of my tenure as president, it is by no means the end of my work with MSUSMAC! This has been a wonderful experience.

Thanks again for all your support and generosity that you have given to MSUSMAC.

Warm Regards, Denise

HONOREE

VERA WALTON MERRITT

of the Indian Head Braves Little League Baseball and Cheer Teams. In 2007 they were recognized by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, Nu Zeta Omega Chapter for their Contributions to the Community. They freely supplied “Fried Oysters” to fourth graders at J. C. Parks Elementary School at the culmination of their environmental studies. They donated food for Safe Nights Programs and National Night Out Events. After retiring from Waltons, Vera continued to remain on site to assist her brothers who took over the business. Covid caused the closing of the carryout, but it is not gone forever.

Vera Walton Merritt was born in Pomonkey, Charles County, Maryland and received her early education in the Charles County Public School System. A 1962 graduate of Pomonkey High School, she went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Morgan State (College) University in Baltimore, Md. in 1966. She earned her Master of Science Degree in Education also from Morgan State University in 1971. After teaching in the Baltimore City

System for eight years, Vera relocated to Los Angeles, California and was immediately hired by the Los Angeles Unified School District where she taught for 28 years until her retirement in 2002. During her tenure there she earned a second Masters’ Degree in School Administration and Supervision from Pepperdine University, Los Angeles Campus. During her teaching career she has served as a Mentor Teacher for beginning teachers, Resource Teacher over the Computer Labs, the Library, and several Teacher Assistants. She sometimes worked with budgets of half a million dollars and was proud to say she never misplaced a penny but did have some sleepless nights.

After retiring, Vera returned ‘home’ to participate in the family business, Waltons Market / Waltons Seafood Carryout & Catering. She and her sister Barbara were owners and operators of the business from 2000 to 2009. They participated in the training of students from Lackey High School and were sponsors

Ms. Merritt remains active in the community. She has served as an Election Judge for the Charles County Board of Elections. She is a founding member and is currently active in the Morgan State University Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter and a Lifetime Member of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association. She’s an active member of the Pomonkey High School Alumni Association, an active member of Metropolitan United Methodist Church, secretary of the Western Charles Democratic Club, supportive member of the Charles County African American Heritage Society, the Bel Alton High School Alumni Association CDC, and participant in the Village of Pomonkey Project as well as the Carroll Family Farm (her Mother’s Legacy) Project. Idle time favorites include tracing her Family’s Genealogy, reading for pleasure, family and friends cookouts, taking family vacations, and lounging around outside enjoying the sun, the fresh air, and her plants.

Those that know her would say it would be hard to find someone that is as: sincere warm-hearted dedicated to hardworking unselfish and calm, cool, and collective as she is.

When asked how she manages such a busy lifestyle, her response is “One Day at a Time!” and “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”.

He participated in three United Methodist Church Volunteer in Mission trips. He is a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and Christmas in April. He is an active member of the Brandywine North Keys Civic Association and the Prince George’s County Parent Teacher Association.

In retirement, he has delivered on the community service expectation by chartering the Upper Marlboro/Waldorf Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and becoming a life member of the Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Owen believes strongly in the words of Kappa Alpha Psi Elder Watson Diggs, “To understand the heart and mind of a person, look not at what he has achieved, but at what he aspires to.” Owen’s accomplishments, though many, are simply a reflection of his understanding that success is a result of aspiring to help others, which he does daily.

Owen proudly attributes his personal accomplishments to the loving support of his wife Audrey, his family and the community at large.

In Recognition Of Contribution For The Continued Success Of The Four Maryland Public HBCUs

David J. Burton is a 1967 graduate of Morgan State University.

During its Spring 2022 Commencement, Morgan State awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters to David J. Burton. The photos above depict the hooding and award of the honorary degree. His alma mater presented the honorary degree to Mr. Burton for his work as the co-founder and president of the Coalition for Equity and Excellence in Maryland Higher Education. In 2006, the Coalition sued the Maryland State Higher Education Commission for its discriminatory and inequitable treatment of the four public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the state. Despite the state’s continued efforts to have the case dismissed and otherwise declare the suit unwarranted, Mr. Burton refused to capitulate. Through sheer determination and grit, Mr. Burton saw the case through to its culmination in an unprecedented $577 million settlement recommended (with near unanimous approval) by the Maryland General Assembly and approved by the U.S. Court of Appeals, 4th Circuit in Richmond, Virginia in 2021.

Throughout this 15+ year ordeal, Mr. Burton never waivered in his commitment to seek redress, equitable treatment, and excellence in education due the four HBCUs in Maryland.

It is for these reasons that the Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter of the Morgan State University Alumni Association conveys special recognition to David J. Burton for his steadfastness, determination, perseverance, and courage to insure that Bowie State University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Coppin State University, and Morgan State University commence to receive that which is long overdue.

The Coalition’s work received redress for Maryland’s HBCUs and is widely viewed as a model for HBCUs, especially public HBCUs, throughout the United States that may have experienced or are experiencing adverse and inequitable treatment in their states. .

The Alma Mater

Fair Morgan, we love thee, so tried and so true

Our hearts at thy name thrill with pride

We owe thee allegiance, we pledge thee our faith, A faith that will ever abide.

We pledge thee our love; we pledge thee our faith, Whatever the future may bring. And thus our devotion, fidelity too, And homage we pay as we sing.

Fair Morgan, as onward the years quickly fl y, And thou livest in memory sweet. We bring thee our laurels whatever they be, And lay them with joy at thy feet.
