ABOUT BRAMPTON BOARD OF TRADE Brampton’s Largest Business Association

For 135 years, the Brampton Board of Trade (BBOT) has been the “go-to” organization for Brampton businesses of all sectors to convene, collaborate and create solutions to boost regional economic prosperity.

We provide solutions to the toughest problems businesses face every day including overcoming barriers to growth, attracting and retaining talent and making the right connections. Membership ranges from multi-national corporations to small start-ups and individual entrepreneurs. The BBOT represents a diverse range of businesses from across Peel Region.

Over 1,900 voting members renew their ownership stake each year with many of Brampton’s biggest and most influential companies being among them.

Impactful

The BBOT dedicates a significant amount of time and effort to its municipal, regional, provincial and federal advocacy efforts. Volunteers meet monthly and donate thousands of hours to assist us in creating insightful policies and recommendations to stimulate our economy.

Representative

The BBOT is a diverse and inclusive organization. Our members are diverse in culture, race, gender, political ideology and their businesses are varied in size, sector, ownership model and more.

Engaged

Last year, more than 3,500 registrants attended over 50 events, workshops and meetings held by the BBOT.

To guide Brampton businesses on their success journey and to lead Brampton’s business community in building Canada’s most dynamic regional economy.

Simply put, the Brampton Board of Trade is about business success. The Board’s focus is in two areas:

1. Productivity: Delivering services that save you time, money and help your enterprise grow.

2. Prosperity: Presenting solutions that generate wealth and better Brampton’s quality of life.

A trusted network, the Brampton Board of Trade convenes relevant meetings of decision-makers and risk-takers who help each other grow. The Board curates information and discussions that provide solutions-oriented outcomes. It is an important catalyst for success at both the enterprise and community level. Membership ranges from multi-national corporations to small start-ups and individual entrepreneurs.

This past year saw no shortage of wins for Brampton – from historic investments in space robotics by MDA, to battery and electric vehicle production by Magna and Stellantis, and progress on the new Toronto Metropolitan University School of Medicine – and many Brampton Board of Trade members saw significant growth. Companies in manufacturing, logistics and food processing not only drive our regional and national economies but also represent our city with pride. That pride is reflected in this Directory, serving as an illustration of Brampton’s impact around the world.

The Board of Trade is an essential partner for Brampton businesses in an ever-changing world because of our adaptability and diversity. This past year saw the return and re-invention of our signature in-person programming, including the second annual Energy & Environment Forum. We also entered an historic partnership with Toronto Metropolitan University to develop the BReady Talent Accelerator and created innovative programming that responds directly to member needs. Today, we are the only accredited business association in Brampton and are respected as the voice of Brampton’s business leaders. Our members’ priorities inform all our advocacy and event programming, and our collective voice has helped business weather a period of unprecedented challenge, positioning our business community for a new era of growth.

While we know that too many are still feeling the effects of inflation, supply chain disruptions and other lingering hangovers from the difficulty of the past three years, we are proud of the way our business community continues to meet the challenge of being there for each other. Our many networks and programs highlight our collective strength and offer continued opportunities to share solutions that will help future-proof our economy.

From an operations standpoint, the Brampton Board of Trade is healthy. Our ongoing digital transformation, that was necessitated by the pandemic, continues to offer new best-practices to better serve our customers and maximize the value of membership. Our advocacy agenda encourages all levels of government to make the choices and investments that will strengthen our community and create conditions for even more growth. We have made progress on critical policy files, including talent attraction, building the infrastructure of tomorrow, and creating a business climate that unlocks innovation and sustainable growth.

The Board of Trade enjoys strong support from members, sponsors and community partners because of the approach we take on a daily basis. Our volunteers are the backbone of our efforts to deliver informative and relevant programming that highlights the opportunities and threats for our city as we further carve out our competitive advantage. On behalf of Brampton City Council, I am pleased to extend best wishes to members of the Brampton Board of Trade. I appreciate your advocacy efforts and I want to thank the volunteers for their dedication to the business community. The Business Directory is an excellent source of information, and a great way to support your fellow members.

As one of Canada’s youngest and fastest growing cities, we have so much to offer. Brampton has a diverse workforce and access to a highly skilled talent pool. Our central location within Canada’s Innovation Corridor and our connectivity provide companies with quick and easy access to international markets.

Investor Confidence in Brampton at All-Time High

• Compared to five years ago, the City of Brampton is issuing twice as many building permits a year.

• In 2022, we conducted almost 300,000 building inspections, shattering 2021’s record of 228,000.

• The amount of construction value exploded to $2 billion in 2022, a 131% increase from 2018.

• This puts us in the top five municipalities in Canada for construction value.

• Small business continues to be the lifeblood of Brampton. Despite the pandemic, Brampton continues to attract new investments. In 2022, over 90,000 businesses chose to call Brampton their home.

We continue to attract major investment, including some of the largest and most impactful projects in Canada, from space robotics pioneer MDA, which is building its new global headquarters, lab and centre of excellence here, to Stellantis, which is retooling its Brampton plant for the next generation of electric vehicles. As well, the recent announcement by Magna to establish its eighth facility to build battery enclosures for electric vehicles in Brampton and create over 500 jobs is good news for our city.

There is so much happening in Brampton, and we’re excited about this growth and potential of our city!

COMMITTEES & NETWORKS

Policy & Government Relations

With the 2021–2024 Strategic Plan as its lead, this committee focuses on the policies and issues impacting Brampton businesses. The committee is instrumental in conveying to elected officials the important issues that Brampton businesses face, asking the pertinent questions that concern our members, and most especially, calling for actionable policies that are Brampton-centric.

Finance

This committee is entrusted with looking at the strategic direction of the Board from a financial perspective. While overseeing the Board’s financial activities, including budget, compliance, auditing, and investment portfolio, this group of financial experts is charged with ensuring healthy operational results and excellent fiscal management. An extension of the Board of Directors, this committee can dig deeper into specific areas to provide insights and ideas for future strategic decision-making as well as make recommendations on the current budget and how it connects to the five-year plan.

Peer to Peer Networks

The Brampton Board of Trade is the forum for quality conversations. Leading businesses meet monthly by sectors and common objectives. P2P Peer Networks are designed to provide a place to share common challenges and solutions, to identify trends in the market, and to provide tools for Brampton to prosper across all sectors.

Trade Network

Businesses that export goods either internationally or inter-provincially come together to build their network.

Prosperity Network

CEOs, business owners and other leaders meet to discuss the overarching issues that impact Brampton’s prosperity.

Connectwork

A network of Brampton’s businesswomen focused on personal and professional development in an inclusive and supportive setting.

ADVOCACY

Elections, government budgets and regulatory changes have significant implications for businesses. In response, the Brampton Board of Trade drives change and implements strategic initiatives in order to support our collective city objectives. We bring YOUR issues to the table.

Local Get There on Time

Accelerate planning on higher-order transit and other transportation infrastructure investment. Get the Main St. LRT Extension built – now, not in a decade.

Demystify City Hall

Help businesses to better understand the budgeting process and its impact on them.

More Post-Secondary Education (PSE)

Work with community partners to widen the scope of post-secondary educational offerings and retain youth. We are pleased to soon be welcoming the Toronto Metropolitan University School of Medicine and continue to push for expanded PSE opportunities in Brampton.

I Love Brampton

What is the I Love Brampton Campaign and where does this contribution go?

Many members make a contribution over and above their member rate towards this campaign. Proceeds from the I Love Brampton campaign support economic development initiatives. These are initiatives such as the Board of Trade’s advocacy efforts to make Brampton a place where businesses of all sizes want to relocate, expand or open up. Our staff regularly engage with elected officials at Queen’s Park and on Parliament Hill to stress the importance of a pro-growth business climate and delivering on Brampton’s big infrastructure priorities like the Main St. LRT Extension, Riverwalk and two-way, all-day GO train service.

I Love Brampton proceeds directly support these economic advocacy efforts and other collaborative efforts, such as participation in the Canadian Global Cities Council, that provide a tangible return on investment and benefit all who work or operate a business in our city.

Regional

Inter-Regional Connection

Drive for favourable decisions to support two-way, all-day GO train service between Brampton, Toronto and Kitchener-Waterloo.

Innovation Corridor

Collaboration in Canada’s Innovation Corridor spanning from the GTA to Waterloo Region, an economic powerhouse of more than $345 billion.

The Brampton Board of Trade successfully hosted the 4th Annual Canada’s Innovation Corridor Summit on September 21, 2021. The 2021 Summit explored key issues associated with the theme of Disruption. In particular, keynotes and panel discussions focused on the human integration of talent and tech to capture sector-disruptive opportunities.

Provincial/Federal

Budget Allocation

Communicate the business community’s expectation for fair share funding for Brampton to local MPs and MPPs.

Tax Changes

The Brampton Board of Trade advocates directly with City Council, Members of Provincial Parliament and Members of Parliament to help them understand the cumulative regulatory burden faced by businesses.

Pandemic Recovery

We work tirelessly to help all levels of government understand the burden that the pandemic placed on businesses, and to suggest ways that policies and programs could put businesses back on a path to growth.

Canadian Global Cities Council

As an active member, the Brampton Board of Trade draws on best practices from other major cities and engages in advocacy to achieve results from the federal government.
