From the CEO Welcome to Winter 2026 at Brampton Library! Our branches are always hives of activity, and this season is no exception.

We have programs and events for everyone, from newborns to seniors, and something for everyone’s interest.

This winter I invite you to participate in Family Literacy Day on January 27, with special storytimes for all ages throughout that week.

Literacy begins at birth, and there is no better way to instill a love of reading than to share stories with your young children. In fact, the Library’s storytimes are based on research showing how pre-literacy skills can be shared through story, song, and rhyme. Check out our special Storytime Adventures programs, featuring teddy bears, medieval knights, Caribbean folklore, and even the Easter Bunny, not to mention a French-language bonhomme de neige event!

February is Black History Month, featuring several events in partnership with our community. School-age children can escape the late-winter blahs by participating in one of our many March Break programs the week of March 16. New this winter is a series of workshops hosted by the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM).

I’m very excited that in this period we will be opening our fully-renovated South Fletcher’s Branch in the Susan Fennell Sportsplex, featuring new spaces for study, connection, and exploration. As we close the branch’s temporary location in Shoppers World mall and move back to the Sportsplex, please check with staff or our website to be certain of which location your program will be in. A grand opening will be planned for late spring, and I hope you’ll join us!

Take a close look at 19th century stereographs — photographs that produced a three-dimensional image when viewed through a stereoscope, discover why these images were created, and learn about the effect they have had on images of South Asia today. Explore the role of textiles in Bollywood cinema, focusing on how costume design highlights personal characteristics or hints at narrative meaning through colour, fabric, and embroidery. I just finished reading Quiet by Susan Cain.

This book is a powerful letter to introverts living in an “extrovert ideal” world. The book explores the often-overlooked strengths and value of introverts in society.

What are you watching?

British crime thrillers are my jam! I’m watching Broadchurch — its brilliant blend of mystery, human emotion, and stunning coastal visuals makes it a standout series. Olivia Colman steals the show (as usual).

What are you eating?

Winter calls for comforting Asian food. For lunch, I’d grab steamed buffalo mo:mo soaked in a spicy tomato-peanut gravy. For dinner, it’s my true comfort: a Newari Khaja set, a whole festival on a plate with beaten rice, mutton curry, spicy fish, tomato pickle, potatoes, black-eyed peas, bamboo-shoot stew, and veggies. Bliss!

Where are you going?

I traveled to Nepal this past September/ October. I loved reconnecting with my family and friends while indulging in rich Nepali food. I also went on a trek with friends to Mt. Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m). For a thrilling glimpse into the adventures of trekking, pick up It's Only the Himalayas: And Other Tales of Miscalculation from an Overconfident Backpacker by Canadian author Susan Bedford, available at Brampton Library; her captivating stories take you on a journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Nepal and Bhutan.
