Driving with Integrity

DrivingismorethanjustgettingfrompointAtopointB—it’saboutsharingtheroadresponsiblyandkeepingour communitysafe.InBrambleton,ourstreetsservenotonlyvehiclesbutalsopedestrians,cyclists,schoolbuses,and families.Drivingwithintegritymeansfollowingtrafficlaws,beingmindfulofothers,andsettinganexampleofrespect andcaution.

Unfortunately,commontrafficviolationsputothersatrisk.Runningstopsignsandredlights,speeding,passing stoppedschoolbuses,andfailingtoyieldtopedestriansarenotjustdangerous—they’reillegal.Theseactions endangerchildrenwalkingtoschool,familiesenjoyingastroll,andneighborstryingtogethomesafely.

Speedinginresidentialareasisamajorconcern.Neighborhoodstreetsarenotdesignedforhigh-speedtravel,andjust afewextramilesperhourcanbethedifferencebetweenaclosecallandatragedy.Followpostedspeedlimitsandbe readytostopnearparks,pools,schools,andcrosswalks.

Anotherissueisusingresidentialstreetsaspickupanddrop-offzonesforstudents.Theseareasaren’tmeantforhighvolumetraffic,andstoppinginundesignatedspotscreatescongestionandhazardsforpedestriansanddriversalike. Usedesignatedschoolzonesandproceduresfordrop-offsandpickupstokeepourneighborhoodssafe.

Passingastoppedschoolbus is recklessandillegal.Whenaschoolbusstopsandextendsitsstopsign,alltraffic—both directionsonundividedroads—muststop.Turningrightorleftinfrontofastoppedbusisalsoillegalanddangerous, aschildrenmaybecrossing.Alwayswaituntilthestopsignisretractedandthebusmovesbeforeproceeding.

Somedriversmakeriskymaneuverstosavetime,likeU-turnsfromtheleftturnlaneataredlightorspeedingupto beatthelight.Theseactionscreateunnecessarydangersatintersections.Redmeansstop—noexceptionsforU-turns. Ifthelightturnsyellow,slowdownandpreparetostopinsteadofacceleratingthrough.Afewextrasecondsof patiencecanpreventseriousaccidents.

Pedestriansalwayshavetherightofwayatmarkedcrosswalks,butdriversshouldalsoyieldtopedestrianscrossing outsidecrosswalkswhensafe.Pedestrians,however,shouldneverassumedriversseethem—alwaysmakeeyecontact beforesteppingintothestreet.

SchoolZones:SlowDownandStayFocused Schoolzonesaredesignatedareaswherespeedlimits areloweredtoensurethesafetyofstudentsandtraffic aroundschools.InLoudounCounty,theselimitsarestrictly enforcedduringdesignatedhours.

•WatchforPostedSigns:Schoolzonesignsindicate whenspeedlimitsare reduced.Alwaysdecreaseyour speedandstayalert,evenifstudentsarenotvisible.

Trustisjustlikeanyotherhumaninteraction.Ithastobeearnedandthenithastobemaintained.Itstarts withasingleperson,movestoothermembersinahouseholdandthenextendstothecommunitythrough neighborhoods.Trustislikethefoundationof a house. Without it, the whole house comes crashing down.

Trusthelpsbuildacommunitybecauseitallowspeopletorelyononeanotheringoodtimesandbadtimes. Forexampleifyouhadafamilyemergencyandhadtoleaveforacoupledays,youcouldaskyourneighbor towateryourplantsorpickupanypackagesthat come to your doorstep. This means thatyouhavesomeone inthecommunitytoaskforhelpwhenyouneedit,whetheritbeaneighbor,afriend,afamilymember,or someoneatschool.

Trustisalsobeinghonestandtransparentwithoneanother.Ifsomeoneinthecommunitydoessomethingto upsetyou,youshouldtalktothemandtellthemthatitupsetsyou,insteadofactingliketheproblemdoesn’t existorignoringthem,becausethatmakestheproblemworse.Givingsincereadviceisalsoawayofbuilding trust.

To build trust with people in your community, you should be kind and respectfultotheminwhateverway possible.Acknowledgingandrespectingoneanother’sculturesisanotherwayofbuildingmutualrespectand trust.Ifsomeonecelebratesaholidaythatyoudon’t,weshouldwishthemahappyholiday.Partiesandother socialgatheringsaregreatvenuestointeractwithpeopleandbuildtrust.
