DAY 1

Landing Brakøya is reached only by sea, and the last stretch is already part of the stay — the run down the Raftsundet, walls of rock rising on either side, and an island at the end of it that belongs to your party alone. No one else on the quay.

ARRIVING

Fly to Evenes and drive to Hanøy, where the boat is waiting at the pier Or fly into Svolvær and come the last stretch by boat — or by helicopter from Evenes, direct to the island The passage in runs past the mouth of the Trollfjord before Brakøya comes into view

AFTERNOON

Welcome at the quay and settle into the hovedhus — no two rooms alike, every one turned toward the water The bathhouse ritual: sauna, sea, and the fire lit in the badehus First dinner at the one table in the spisehus — what the boats landed this morning

Fell & Forage MORNING

Breakfast at the kitchen table, then out with your guide onto the fells behind the island A guided walk up toward the first snow on the ridgelines — as far and as high as the party wants to go

AFTERNOON

Mushroom and shoreline foraging: chanterelles, kelp, sea buckthorn, crowberry Back to the tun for the Big Five of Brakøya — the arctic dip, something caught at sea, something gathered on land

EVENING

Cook what you gathered alongside the kitchen, or leave it entirely to them Fire in the library, s’mores for the children, and the first watch for the lights

The Working Sea MORNING

Out early to haul the crab pots set the evening before Sea kayaking in the sheltered water between the islands, or the halibut longline with the skipper

AFTERNOON

Lunch on the badehus deck, then a freediving or snorkelling session with the marine biologist The underwater drone for those who would rather stay dry

EVENING

Lamb from the surrounding fells, grilled over open flame on the shore Cocktails made with island botanicals as the light goes

Out Among the Islands MORNING

Island-hopping by boat through the archipelago — empty beaches, old fishing stations, sea eagles overhead Binoculars, a thermos, and no fixed turnaround time

AFTERNOON

A day trip in to Henningsvær: galleries, the harbour, coffee among the racks Or stay on the water — sailing, trout and salmon fishing on the mainland rivers, riding along the shore

EVENING

Return to the island for a long table dinner and a talk from a local historian on Brakøya’s trading years Massage and skin treatment for anyone who would rather not talk to anyone

Fire, Cold & Light MORNING

Yoga or pilates in the loft, then the full badstu ritual — hot sauna, cold sea, and the wood-fired tub on the deck when you have had enough of both Split and stack the winter wood, if that appeals; the island always needs it

AFTERNOON

Choose your craft: whittling, painting, shell work, a coffee tasting, a photography workshop for the aurora ahead Or nothing at all — a chair, a blanket, and weather worth watching

EVENING

A farewell dinner built around the season: cod, lamb, cloudberry, birch Out into the dark for the Northern Lights, which return to Lofoten from September and are strongest in clear October air

Autumn is one of Brakøya’s seven seasons — September and October, averaging 8°C, with the Northern Lights returning and the island at its most colourful. Nothing here is fixed: days are built around your party before you arrive, and re-built each morning around the weather.
