The bedrock of a strong community is healthy small businesses. As governor, I will focus on ensuring that government listens to rather than telling businesses what to do from Saint Paul. You know better than bureaucrats what your communities need.

If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions?

That’s simple: listen. Unlike the current governor, I believe that businesses are run by people with the interests of their community at heart. Only by working together can we build a better future.

In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved?

Minnesota’s success is built upon the strength, hard work, and ingenuity of our citizens.

We believe in the value of education, including teaching our kids not just facts but good values. I believe we need to expand our focus beyond the Twin Cities to Greater Minnesota.

Civility and cooperation have been in short supply in politics, and that hurts us all.

Throughout my career I have tried to expect the best of people, and most of the time they deliver. We need to remember that we are all working for the good of the citizens.

What are your priorities as they relate to our local business community?

I’ve introduced a One Minnesota Community Prosperity Plan to grow Minnesota businesses. The plan calls for greater funding for workforce housing, workforce training programs, improving our roads and bridges, expanding access to reliable broadband, and creates grants for Minnesotan cities to make investments in their communities.

If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions?

I will build One Minnesota. That means that people that are impacted by policy need to have a seat at the table when those policies are being made. I will work closely with the business community and make sure your priorities are heard.

In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved?

Minnesota building trades and their contractors have a long history of successful apprenticeship programs that take little to no taxpayer dollars. But we can do better.

Let’s invest in career and technical education so students have the skills they need to make an impact at home and in the workplace.

I’m a 24-year veteran of the MN National Guard, so I know about service and cooperation.

In One Minnesota, we focus on our common values to solve problems. Minnesotans are tired of gridlock. We need to work together to build One Minnesota where everyone has a chance to get ahead.

If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions?

Both business and workers must be at the table as we chart the best path forward together. I will be available both in Washington and in the district to representatives of the business community through individual meetings, public appearances, and listening sessions.

In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved?

Minnesota has traditionally been a leader in creating a highly skilled workforce through investments in pre-K to post secondary education. Every child in our nation should be able to realize their full potential through education--that will require addressing the “achievement gap” plaguing our state and others across the nation.

Unlike many politicians, I realize civility and cooperation are essential to fixing gridlock in Washington. I am committed to working with anyone to benefit the everyday lives of Minnesotans in my district. Since I first got involved in politics fighting for rural schools, my commitment to service has been unyielding.

Twenty-seven years ago, my brothers and I fulfilled our dream of opening a small business that encompassed one of our passions: hockey. I will always fight to make this economy better, to make it deeper, and to ensure that everyone has a shot at their version of the American dream.

If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions?

I have been traveling the district for 16 months meeting with small business owners, community leaders, and voters from all 18 counties to listen and understand the issues that matter to them. In Congress, I would keep the communication lines open to ensure I am fighting for their pro-growth priorities.

In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved?

I will fight for pro-growth policies that would unleash the economic engine in the 8th district. I will continue to push for tax relief that ensures a fairer, simpler tax code so businesses and families in Crow Wing County and across the district can grow, expand, and create more jobs.

Like most Minnesotans, when I look at Washington I see dysfunction, divisiveness.

From playing hockey to 23 years of public service in law enforcement, I am a problem solver. Washington isn’t representing Main Street and I look forward to working with all viewpoints to get things done on their behalf.

Ensuring our local businesses have the infrastructure, access to affordable funding resources and trainable workforce. Safe roads for customers to access our communities and transport our products is important, access to statewide broadband is how businesses connect with the global market and the world connects with our local business community.

If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions?

Being present and engaging with people in our communities is how I’ve heard business owners talk to me about separating employment from healthcare, with a Single Payer system allowing them to provide full-time hours to employees struggling with part-time paychecks and eliminating annual healthplan headaches. I am listening to you.

In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved?

Our local and state governments will encourage investment and business growth by improving the transparency of where “fair for all” tax dollars are being spent on services to people and businesses in Minnesota. Investing surpluses to expand education, tourism and access to natural resources will increase business in our communities.

Being accountable to all parties when negotiating and acknowledging success is accomplished when you can shake hands after. All of us encounter people we disagree with, that is obvious at all levels of today’s government, as the representative of southern Cass, Todd and Wadena counties, I will work for you.

Tax reform, Unnecessary regulations, Workforce development, collaboration between education and business to develop the workers we need. Workforce housing, develop housing that works for our local workers.

If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions?

As in the past I would continue to reach out to local business leaders to hear there concerns and seek their advice, I would also continue the solid relationship that I have with the Brainerd Lakes Chamber and the Minnesota Chamber. They both have been Great resources.

In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved?

Tax reform and eliminating unneeded regulations. If we do not continue to improve in these areas businesses will not locate, open or expand in our state. Having a properly well trained workforce, ready to take the jobs that are coming to our state in the future is a priority.

I have always worked well with both sides of the aisle in the House and work well with the Senate and the Administration. I also have a good working relationship with our County Commissioners and our Municipality leaders.

Consistent statewide regulations and reducing unnecessary regulations.

I have authored and passed business-friendly legislation in telecommunications and angel investing. I have also been a leader at the capitol, recently serving as the Majority Whip.

Our children shouldn’t have to move away to find a good-paying job. The Lakes Region needs sustainable job growth in order to thrive long-term. My priority is to limit obstacles for business expansion and reduce taxes that prevent our local business Community from reinvestment and hiring.

If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions?

I’ve been honored to visit businesses, tour facilities with employees and attend round tables focused on economic growth. I value input from business owners in our community and my door is always open to hear concerns and I will continue to reach out to them regularly as well.

In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved?

Our tax bill froze the Statewide general property tax levy which significantly impacted commercial / industrial and seasonal recreational properties. Additionally, our tax bill also provided an exemption from the general Levy for commercial / industrial property on the first $100, 000 value. These changes are a significant Improvement.

The Chamber promotes the spirit of service, civility and cooperation among our government leaders. How would you demonstrate these qualities in public office?

This last session my LCCMR bonding bill funded wastewater treatment facility upgrades for small cities. My legislation provides nearly $60 million dollars for these much needed improvements and had broad bipartisan support. It was signed by Governor Dayton and will have a significant impact keeping local property taxes in check.

My priority would be to foster an environment that is conducive to starting small business and growing existing small businesses.

If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions?

I would welcome comment from those in the business community when making decisions that effect business owners and employees.

In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved?

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development and Minnesota Secretary of State offer extensive resources on how to start a small business. That, along with angel tax credit and various grants offered by the state are helpful to those looking to start or grow small business.

I would make it a priority to form good working relationships with my fellow legislators. I would work to find common ground and build from there. The goal of any decision I make will be to benefit the people of Minnesota.

I am seeking reelection so we can build on recent successes including: (1) Reduce taxes & regulations. (2) Mitigate uncontrolled health insurance costs. (3) Improve transportation.

(4) Ensure the Cuyuna Mountain Bike Trails, expanded ATV trail systems and the Crosslake National Loon Center projects are completed in a timely manner.

If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions?

Absolutely! The great ideas are born at the local level, not in Saint Paul. I will seek the local business community’s counsel before I vote on matters of economic consequence to our area. We made great progress during the past two years, but much work remains to be done.

In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved?

The legislature provided historic business tax and regulatory relief, increased transportation funding, and made a major investment in the Cuyuna State Recreation Area. We have more work to do stabilizing health insurance costs and ensuring our high schools and colleges produce work ready young adults to meet today’s workforce needs.

I am about solutions, not who gets the credit. I will continue to work hard with our local government officials, the business community and my colleagues on both sides of the isle to make our part of Minnesota a better place to live, work and raise our children.

Provide small business owners, contractors and other individuals the option to buy into MnCare at a group rate. Support our travel and tourism industry through trail development, workforce housing and resource management. Improve our infrastructure such as roads, communications and airports to provide avenues for growth.

If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions?

I spent 10 years, as an outside sales manager, calling on area businesses for a Minnesota based trucking company. I believe that meeting people where they work provides the best situation to understand their issues. As your Representative, I will make myself available and become our voice of the District In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved?

I think the growth in the number and size of our area’s celebrations, festivals and events has been very effective in drawing dollars to our area. I believe we could do more to encourage visitors to relocate their businesses and families to our area.

I currently serve on the Emily Volunteer Fire Department, the Emily Cooperative Telephone Board and the Fairfield Township Board. I have been Chamber Member as owner of the Wolfhound Bar. In public office I would draw on my civic experience and support issues that benefit the District.

Workforce Development & Housing are essential. I would also be interested in assisting the existing business sector in growth opportunities, as well as creation of new business in our area.

If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions?

I would begin by listening to all of the business concerns. Next, the identification of possible course of action, and engagement of all concerned people in coming to the true and best decision for all.

In your opinion, what has been the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved?

The County has been significant in contributing to the promotion of our area. The Brainerd Lakes Area Development Corporation, the Housing & Redevelopment Authority, along with the local Chambers of Commerce have all been great contributors to the creation and growth of our business sector. Strengthening our workforce is key.

My strong belief is that character and integrity matter! I recognize that EVERYONE is priority. It is essential to engage all people from the private and public sectors of or community in order to promote the spirit of service.

The business community benefits from taxpayers that are satisfied not only with the government services they receive but the manner in which those services are delivered.

Services delivered in a timely, efficient and thorough manner aide in attracting and retaining a workforce already brought here by our unique natural resources.

If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions?

My telephone, email address and contact information have been and will continue to always be available. I was instrumental in getting board meetings televised and available on-line 24-7. I will continue to make myself available to speak before a gathering or classroom of those interested in what County Government does.

In your opinion, what has been the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved?

BLAEDC, made up of businesses promoting doing business in the area, has gone on record stating that eight consecutive years of zero levy increases in the County has been a major factor in attracting employment to the Lakes Area. Good testimony. Reasonable and responsible movement forward will serve us best.

A joy of elected office is recognizing there are no reasons for political â&#x20AC;&#x153;enemies.â&#x20AC;?

Disagreeing parties can dialogue with opinion differences while developing good public policy. I try mightily to keep doors open in the hope that strong convictions on both sides of an issue brings out the best results.

As an elected official I feel that I have an obligation to go to the business community and ask for their input on issues impacting their business. My personal phone would be available to contact me on issues at all times. Communication, openness, and transparency allow for integrity.

Our Economic Development Authority group that works with local businesses to offer low cost financing for businesses. A new charter school, many restaurants and merchants, local medical care, fire and police, ambulance services, several churches and a multitude of recreational activities that attract visitors to support our local business base.

Regular and open communication about intentions and ideas is necessary in all relationships. The promotion of teamwork, openness and listening will always go a long way to making the right decisions.

Nisswa is really about tourism and will be into the future. Maintaining the waters and greenspace of our community is critical, along with smart growth that protects the â&#x20AC;&#x153;assetsâ&#x20AC;? that make Nisswa one of the most desirable destinations, and places to live in Minnesota.

As part of the Council’s Decision Making Process on issues concerning the Business Community to ask the question “Who would this issue effect in the Business Community”?

Then to promote Nisswa Government reaching out to them to get involved early on in the decision making process.

In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved?

Success: Witnessing the close collaboration between our Chamber of Commerce and City Government.

Improvement: Review all programs to see if any “long in tooth” ones are still needed or needed to the level that they are currently funded before asking for increased budgets to better serve our Residents and Business’s.

I feel that Nisswa needs to continue to progress, while maintaining the small town feel that we all love. Continue to improve and build upon the priorities that have been put in place by previous administrations.

I would be open to meeting with any business/business owner to listen to any ideas or concerns they may have. I am open to in person meetings or whatever is needed to facilitate communication.

I believe that Nisswa has loosened up some of the restrictions of the past to bring in new business that attract more people to the town. Keep allowing businesses to come to town, while keeping the quaintness of the community.

I have owned three businesses in Pequot (presently Timeless Appeal). I feel I have business knowledge along with my three terms as Mayor to bring the two areas together and make our community thrive.

There are monthly meetings between the Chamber, School District and the City.

Cooperative methods have been created by these meetings. We need to work together on these methods, this action will benefit the City of Pequot Lakes.

I have always worked for the betterment of Pequot. On the steering committees for Grad Blast, Historical Society, Park Board, Bands in the Park, Antique Car Show, Library, currently chairperson for “Christmas for Vets” which puts 300 wreaths on the graves of our local vets. Working together achieves good things.

In my opinion there has been more to discourage business growth, than encourage â&#x20AC;&#x153;Over restrictive ordinances and cumbersome proceduresâ&#x20AC;? hinder growth. We must work together to remove barriers that are stunting our current growth. We need to take control of growing taxes at the city level.

By listening and hearing what others are saying we should be able come to a compromise for just about anything. When people have concerns about projects, we must be able to answer their questions before moving on, there is room for improvement in Pequot Lakes. I do listen and hear.

Moving the entire Community forward, Business Community and Citizens alike. I think if both groups would work together, Pequot would move forward at a faster pace. I think a positive image would do a lot toward having a new business consider moving to out city.

If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions?

Visit with local business owners to get their opinion if whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rightwith the business environment and what could be improved. We have a lot of business experience in this city, and I will respect their opinions.

Right now I think we have obstacles to overcome. While the city has had successes in the past, I think the focus moving forward should be concentrated on the future. If we want business growth, I think we need a united Pequot Lakes.
