Spend some time at Trailside Park, in the heart of downtown and connected right to the Paul Bunyan Trail. Enjoy walking paths, the Pequot Lakes Chamber Welcome Center, the Adams family playground, and the serene Dru Sjodin Memorial Garden.

• Bobber Park

Visit the Cole Memorial building and museum, which was part of President Roosevelt’s New Deal and registered on the National Registry of Historic Places; take a picture next to Paul Bunyan’s oversized log chair; and see the iconic bobber water tower.

• Pequot Lakes Dog Park

Let your dog romp around at the Pequot Lakes Dog Park established by the Babinski Foundation. The park has two separate fenced areas, benches, tables, and dog bags.

NISSWA

But the Girl Scouts get credit for the first published recipe. It was featured in the Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts instructional guidebook in 1927. The recipe was originally called “some mores,” which was eventually blended and shortened to the “s’more” name we know today. Friday, there’s a kick-off party at the Crosslake Community Center with

fun for everyone: sledding, skating, horse-drawn wagon rides, s’mores, and a huge bonfire. Saturday is a full day of activities with the ice carousel, helicopter rides (weather permitting), cross country skiing, Italian Olympics, and shopping.

Stop in to participating businesses to warm up and get free soup as part of the annual SoupFest. Don’t forget to vote for which business has the best soup—pride and a golden ladle trophy are on the line!

Wakesurfing has taken over as the hot new watersport.

Wakesurfers start with the tow rope in hand while standing up and gaining body control and balance. Then, the surfer releases the rope and begins free surfing the wake just feet from the boat. You can only wakesurf behind an inboard V-drive boat where the prop is directly under the boat and in front of the stern.

Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) gives you a great workout. Balancing works your abs and paddling works your arms. And the serene scenery along the way can’t be beat. You can even do yoga on a SUP!

FLOAT

There’s nothing quite like floating on the water. The gentle rocking is so relaxing and the water so refreshing. Whether you’re in your arm chair floatie or on an inner tube meandering down the Crow Wing River (and other area rivers as well), take some time to slow down and float.

You might not think of the Brainerd Lakes Area as a scuba diving destination, but the Cuyuna Mine Lakes, which used to be mining pits, offer some of the clearest visibility (30–50 feet!). Diving the Cuyuna Mine Lakes is full of interesting views—you’ve got to see it to believe it.

Kayak / Canoe

Slow down and take it all in. Canoe or kayak around the lake or down a river.

Go solo or with a partner. Either way you’ll find serenity in the views and wildlife as the water laps over your paddles.

The Brainerd Lakes Area provides excellent fishing and is home to a variety of fish species: walleye, panfish, musky, and bass.

Feel the thrill of the tug on your line with a story (and a photo op) to last a lifetime. And when the lakes freeze over, try your hand at a popular past-time: Ice fishing. Rent an icehouse and spend time on frozen water. Or join over 10,000 people on the ice for the Brainerd Jaycee’s Ice Fishing Extravaganza on Gull Lake. Either way, it’s an adventure you won’t forget.

Beach-It

Many of our lakes either have public beaches or stops out on the lake that allow you to beach your boat along the shoreline. Anchor and chat with other boat and beach goers; it’s a community on the water! Pelican Lake, Gull Lake, and the Whitefish Chain of Lakes all have great opportunities for shallow water fun.

Area is a winter lover’s paradise.

Snowmobile across one of our lakes that connect to hundreds of miles of groomed trails that wind through snow-covered evergreens. If all that snowmobiling has you working up an appetite, many Lakes Area restaurants are an easy stop off the lakes and trails.

Pick a snow-covered lake and get some air. Literally. Snowkiting is the equivalent to kiteboarding, but in the winter. Even light winds can give you a fantastic ride.

Mille Lacs Lake is a popular spot for this growing sport. And after snowkiting, stop at Grand Casino Mille Lacs—for exciting gaming, delicious dining, and lively entertainment.

When staying in the Brainerd Lakes Area in the winter, visit Mount Ski Gull for the perfect family-friendly day of downhill skiing and snowtubing.

WHEN YOU VISIT LAKE COUNTRY, chances are you’ll hear the common loon’s eerie wail and even see them on the water.

Loons—much like the lakes they call home all summer— are an iconic symbol of Minnesota. Learning more about these amazing and adaptable birds will make you love them even more.

HOW MANY LOONS ARE IN MINNESOTA?

WHAT DO THE DIFFERENT LOON CALLS MEAN?

Minnesota has the highest loon population outside of Alaska with approximately 12,000 birds.

Loons are one of the most vocal of all water birds.

They can be heard during the day, but they’re mostly known for their haunting calls at night. One of the most common questions that I get when guiding is “what are the calls and what do they mean”? People love hearing the four distinct calls.

• YODEL (long, rising call with repetitive notes)

Given by male loons when declaring or defending its territory.

• TREMELO (crazy, manic laugh)

This aggressive, distressed

THE OUTDOORS call is given when alarmed or disturbed and can be used by a loon to defend its territory.

• WAIL (similar to a wolf ’s howl)

This is the most eerie and haunting of all the calls. Used during social interactions between loons or to find each other’s locations.

• HOOT (short low note)

Mostly given between adult loons and chicks or sometimes to other loons in close proximately.

HOW DEEP CAN A LOON DIVE?

Loons are like torpedoes in the water— diving over 200 feet for fish. They can stay underwater for up to five minutes, and their red eyes help them see under water.

IS IT TRUE THAT LOONS NEED A LOT OF “RUNWAY” ON THE WATER TO TAKE OFF?

Yes. Because loons’ bodies are heavy compared to their wing size, it can take them up to 600 feet to take off from a lake. Loons are fast once in the air, too. They can fly over 70 mph.

DO LOONS EVER GO ON LAND?

Loons only go on land to mate and incubate eggs. Loons’ legs are set far back on their bodies making them excellent swimmers but awkward on land.

WHERE DO LOONS GO IN THE WINTER?

Adult loons are the first to migrate to their winter home on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts while juvenile loons follow about a month later.

WHERE CAN I SEE LOONS IN THE BRAINERD LAKES AREA?

You can see loons on about any lake in the Brainerd Lakes Area!

With our abundant clean, deep

lakes, it’s common to see or at least hear loons during the summer in the area. Please remember to be respectful and share the water with loons. Having loons on our lakes is a good indicator of the area’s overall aquatic health.

The National Loon Center Foundation was established in 2017 with a mission to restore and protect loon habitats, enhance environmental recreation, and construct a research and education center for migratory wildlife. The foundation and its partners are working to establish a National Loon Center in Crosslake, Minnesota with a target opening in 2022.

Communities are enriched by the presence of art. The Brainerd Lakes Area is fortunate to have the Crossing Arts Alliance on Laurel Street in downtown Brainerd that provides education and access to art, so our community and visitors can experience it in their own lives.

The Crossing Arts Alliance regularly holds art exhibits, adult and kids’ classes, and you can purchase work by local artists.

In August 2018, the Crossing Arts Alliance worked with local artist Tony Powers on a bold mission.

Tony created and drew a mural on the Crossing Arts Alliance’s exterior wall. The community was encouraged to be involved. Over 150 locals came and painted whatever section they could reach creating a vibrant color collage that truly is a work of art.

RELOCATION

Voters in the Brainerd Public Schools district recently approved Blueprint 181, a comprehensive long-range plan to make significant investments in their school buildings. Blueprint 181 addresses and standardizes critical building security, health, safety, education and space needs in all twelve of the district's schools with an overall goal of creating facilities that promote opportunity, innovation and success for all learners.

At the end of the four years of construction, the community will be home to six 2014 National Blue Ribbons schools that have been upgraded and improved and, in one case, built new. The district’s secondary schools for students in grades 5 through 12 will be updated as well. The revitalized Brainerd High School will encompass additional classrooms, career and technical education / workforce development areas, additional gymnasium space, an eight-lane swimming pool, and a 1,200-seat Performing Arts Center, all of which are being designed to bring worldclass experiences to students and community members.

ST. FRANCIS OF THE LAKES CATHOLIC SCHOOLS: FAITHBASED EDUCATION St. Francis of the Lakes Catholic School opened its doors in 1909 as a two-story, eight classroom building. In 1952, a new facility and gymnasium were built, and in 2008 a major renovation and expansion project was completed.

The faculty at St. Francis believes in the dignity and respect of each child. The message and way they communicate this to the children is threaded through every instructional act, explanation, conversation—every minute, every day.
