TO THE BRAINERD LAKES AREA

We are so happy to have you Explore the Brainerd Lakes. We’re a mix of several communities: Brainerd/Baxter, Crosslake, Cuyuna Lakes, Pequot Lakes, and Nisswa. While you’re here, immerse yourself in the different areas as each has its own character and charm.

Brainerd/Baxter

Enjoy one of Minnesota’s most popular areas—the Gull Chain of Lakes. Tee off at one of the area’s nationally recognized golf courses. Visit area attractions, like Northland Kart Kountry, Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf, and Paul Bunyan Land— where a 26-foot-tall lumberjack has been captivating children and saying their names for over 65 years.

Crosslake

Spend the day boating the Whitefish Chain—14 interconnected lakes that provide 119 miles of shoreline. Picnic at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Crosslake Recreation Area and walk across the Pine River Dam to watch the rushing water. Explore specialty shops and boutiques where you’ll find one-of-a-kind clothing and home décor.

Cuyuna Lakes

With its acres of undeveloped forests, natural shorelines, and rugged terrain, the Cuyuna Lakes Area is an adventure enthusiast’s playground. The Cuyuna mountain biking trails will give you an exhilarating rush as you traverse the miles of winding red dirt.

Nisswa

Nisswa is located in the heart of the Brainerd Lakes Area. With its quaint downtown, modern amenities, and friendly faces, Nisswa is your Up North destination. With easy access to golf, the Gull Chain of Lakes, skiing, snowmobiling, and shopping, you’ll find something to do in all four seasons.

Pequot Lakes Area

The Paul Bunyan Trail runs from Brainerd to Bemidji with a stop right in downtown Pequot Lakes. Meander through Breezy Point, Jenkins, and around the Whitefish chain on the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway—a nationally recognized route with 54 miles of paved, wide-shouldered roads.

YOUR CAREER starts here

If you’ve ever vacationed or visited popular local resorts like Grand View Lodge on Gull Lake or Breezy Point Resort on Pelican Lake, you likely recognize the impressive size and infrastructure of these properties.

What you may not realize, by design, is all the jobs and services that happen behind the scenes to make vacations effortless and full of memories. Housekeeping cleaning cabins. Staff setting up and serving weddings and groups. Culinary teams preparing unique dishes. Management teams overseeing day-to-day operations. It takes hundreds of workers to give you—the guest—a seamless and relaxing experience.

A Welcoming Industry

Grand View Lodge and Breezy Point Resort employ over 500 full-and-part-time workers combined. In the summer months, job openings swell to meet demand of the high tourism season. Other resorts also are always looking to add to their teams, too. As spring, fall, and even winter continue to become more popular travel times yearround opportunities are always available.

“Each year, there are hundreds of hospitality jobs that go unfilled in our area. All businesses want to make a good impression for our local customers and visiting guests, but it can be a significant challenge without staff. The hospitality business is fun and dynamic. Locally, we are working with the schools to get people interested in this industry,” said David Spizzo, Breezy Point Resort.

International Work Programs

While you’re on property interacting with staff, you may notice some staff’s name tags have different countries listed. Grand View Lodge and Breezy Point Resort each bring about 65 international seasonal workers to their resorts through temporary government visa programs. While it accounts for a small percentage of their workforce, it helps bridge the gap during worker shortages.

GRAND VIEW LODGE

Bianka, a student from Budapest, Hungary and Ana, a student from Puebla, Mexico, both fell in love with Grand View Lodge on their first visits and returned for the last few seasons. Coming from big and boisterous cities, they love the small town feel, peacefulness, and the easy access to nature.

Bianka and Ana worked in food and beverage helping out at restaurants and events. To them, Grand View Lodge feels like home. Now they know a lot of the other employees—both international and local—making lifelong friendships. They both thank Grand View Lodge for being welcoming and providing all employees with a good work environment.

BREEZY POINT RESORT

The number one goal of Merton and Felicia and Arlan and Princess—who are married couples from Jamacia—is to give you a positive experience while vacationing here. As part of a temporary visa program, they are all skilled hospitality professionals who worked with an agency in a highly competitive program to come here. Each of them have worked at Breezy Point Resort during several summer seasons when there aren’t enough local workers. They feel privileged and honored to bring their strong work ethic here and help the resort run smoothly. From culinary, landscaping to housekeeping, Merton and Felicia and Arlan and Princess make a difference in the guest experience. They all agreed that the awesome leadership team from the owners to managers create a positive and fun environment not only for international and local workers, but also guests too. “The management team gets an A+ from me. From the owners [the Spizzo family] to managers, they lead by example and are so down-to-earth in how they treat their workers,” said Princess.

A Place to Call Home

Much like the international workers who love the Brainerd Lakes for the woods, slower pace, and the people, you can find that here, too. Brainerd Lakes can be your home. And a job in hospitality is perfect way to have a rewarding career that’s fastpaced and offers a lot of opportunities with advancement.

“The Brainerd Lakes Area has more hotels, resorts, and restaurants than almost any other lake community in the state. And if you think just being a chef or behind the front desk is the only position in hospitality available—you are mistaken. From the golf course pros to superintendents, the housekeeping crews to grounds and maintenance, waterfront attendants to ice cream scoopers—we are all hospitality! Regardless of where you start at, there is always a pathway to advancement. And we love what we do. We get to play where we work,” Frank Soukup, Grand View Lodge. All resorts share the same goal: To keep business running with little disruption so guests can enjoy year after year.

IN CROW WING COUNTY, TOURISM’S ECONOMIC IMPACT IS OVER $213 MILLION IN GROSS SALES CONTRIBUTING OVER $13 MILLION IN STATE SALES TAX.

"FROM THE OWNERS [THE SPIZZO FAMILY] TO MANAGERS, THEY LEAD BY EXAMPLE AND ARE SO DOWN-TO-EARTH IN HOW THEY TREAT THEIR WORKERS.”

Nostalgic

You love the warm and fuzzy feelings of reminiscing of a simpler time. And you want to bring your family together to experience a vacation from your childhood. Perhaps it’s bringing your kids to Paul Bunyan Land or walking the dam at Crosslake. You hope to bring your grandkids to stay at the same resort on the same lake that you did years ago. Many resorts that you remember are still here and now offer “reunion houses”—where your whole family can stay under one roof.

Minimalist

Your idea of a vacation is the simpler, the better. Your to-do list consists of biking the Paul Bunyan State Trail, hiking the Crow Wing State Park, or paddling your kayak around one of the area’s quieter lakes. You’re happy with limited amenities. You want a quiet space that provides abundant nature with easy access to trails and lakes. The Brainerd Lakes Area has lodging options that fit your low-key style. Most area resorts are family owned and still have the rustic charm that you love.

Campfire Bay Resort offers guests two, three, and four bedroom cabins. A few of their roomier cabins sleep up to 16 people, and some of the cabins are connected to allow up to 28 people in one building!

Enjoy over 1,000 feet of sugar sand beach at Boyd Lodge in Crosslake. This family resort offers guests three, four, and five bedroom cabins.

You’re up for anything and love the convenience of staying within the city limits. Your idea of a great vacation day is being close to the area’s top attractions, shopping, and restaurants. With parades, firework displays, outdoor movies in Crosslake’s Town Square, and turtle races in Nisswa, the Lakes Area offers a variety of free activities. Glamper

You bring your lodging with you when you come Up North. Your home on wheels is equipped with modern conveniences like a microwave and shower—tenting it is taking it too far! You like RV parks or campgrounds with amenities and easy access to water (pool or lake). You want to be close to activities like nature hikes, biking, and shopping. But you love having your own personal space and the freedom that comes with it. The Brainerd Lakes Area has resorts, RV parks, and campgrounds with camper hook ups (electric, water, and sometimes sewer).

Luxurious

You want amenities at your fingertips: a lush spa, world-class golf, five-star dining, and endless activities for the kids (hello, waterski school)! Having reliable wi-fi to check email is a must. You don’t mind paying for well-appointed accommodations for the

convenience of having everything on-property. You don’t want to sacrifice comfort for the sake of vacation. Many area resorts offer amenities with multiple dining options, pools, beaches, and golf— so you can kick back, relax, and enjoy total pampering.

NORTH destination

IF YOU DREAM OF A DESTINATION WEDDING, YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOOK TO THE TROPICS OR OTHER FAR-OFF LOCALES. YOUR DREAM DESTINATION WEDDING IS RIGHT HERE. THE LAKES AND NORTHWOODS—ALONG WITH OUR AMENITIES—PROVIDE A BEAUTIFUL BACKDROP FOR YOUR PERFECT DAY.

#1 Keep it Easy

International wedding destinations present other logistical challenges. Each country has its own rules that you’ll need to research before tying the knot on location. Passports, language barriers, and other challenges of not being in the same country during the planning stages can be a headache. And international weddings can be cost prohibitive for guests.

One of the best things about the Brainerd Lakes Area is its central location in the state. We’re only about 2 hours from the Twin Cities, Fargo, and Duluth. If you have guests who need to fly, the Brainerd Regional Airport has daily service from Delta Air Lines.

Many area resorts offer on-site wedding planners. Local businesses like Gathered Gold Co. are here for you to help plan your big day.

#2 Venue Selection

Whatever vision and budget, your special day will be personal and perfect.

→ RESORTS

Many of our larger resorts have everything on property simplifying logistics for you and your guests. You can host your rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and reception, plus stay right on-site. The landscaping across these properties is stunning, so you’ll also find lots of photo backdrops from lakes, golf courses, flower beds, to beautifully constructed buildings.

Grand View Lodge has a chapel and those historic steps overlooking the water— popular for ceremony sites. The Pavilion at Madden’s is a 10,000 square foot waterfront venue with a grand fireplace, radiant heat, and water features that is one-of-a-kind.

Nature Link is the Brainerd Lakes’ newest wedding destination. Located in the heart of the Lakes Area and set on Clark Lake, the resort features 14 acres of majestic pines and stunning lake views. The event center, Catalyst, with its modern design and functionality effortlessly combines luxury with nature.

The Getaway Adventure Resort is truly a unique venue set on 520 wooded acres with impressive amenities and views. You and your closest family and friends will love the private luxurious and intimate gathering spaces.

Perhaps you are looking for a smaller venue. Or you want the convenience of being within the city limits. You will find lots of options here.

In Crosslake, The Gathering provides a spacious and budget-friendly venue option.

If you’re looking to stay in Baxter, Arrowwood Lodge provides a ballroom and several amenities on-site.

Gather on 3 offers a wedding retreat with outdoor ceremony space, a reception room, and restaurant.

The Northern Pacific Center is near the heart of downtown Brainerd and will give you a historic and industrial feel with several event space options depending on the size of your wedding. Kids and adults will also love Goody’s Gourmet Treats close by for whimsical party favors.

OUTDOOR SPACES

Having your wedding at a family cabin that holds special meaning is the perfect way to add some nostalgia to your celebration. Party Time Rental and Party World can transform a backyard or lakefront property into a wedding oasis with tents, tables, chairs, décor, and fun party accessories.

Cragun’s Resort on Gull Lake hosts Gull Lake Cruises and Breezy Point Resort has the Breezy Belle, which make for a fun and unique ceremony or rehearsal dinner while cruising the water.

Perhaps you are looking for the intimate feel of a lakeside wedding, but you don’t have your own cabin. Manhattan Beach Lodge closes the whole property to the public for a beautiful private lakeside wedding set on Trout Lake of the Whitefish Chain near Crosslake.

Say your vows on the pristine and tranquil shores of Bay Lake at Ruttger’s Bay Lake Resort with a lakeside ceremony.

Local florists, like Simply Rustic Floral Design, Brainerd Floral, and North Country Floral can also help you create arrangements.

Foam carrier pads and straps are available for you to haul. Crow Wing Kayaks also will deliver and provide a courtesy ride for a small fee.

Welcome to Crosslake, Kamp Kimchee!

Kamp Kimchee: July 10–14

“The river was so calm we saw a lot of wildlife—cranes, herons, swans, falcons, and several schools of fish. Crow Wing Kayaks made the whole experience smooth and easy for us all.”

SARA MAY

Kamp Kimchee spends a week in Crosslake every July and provides insight into Korean culture. Kamp Kimchee is a culture day camp designed for Korean adoptees or kids of Korean descent. The whole family, including siblings—even if they’re not of Korean origin—are encouraged to participate to learn about and celebrate the Korean culture. This Kamp focuses on self-esteem, family education, and common identity.

A typical camp day includes high energy, classes, and activities. The Crosslake

Community School is the Kamp’s homebase, but activities happen all around the community. The public is welcome to join for Kamp lunches at the Crosslake Community School, taste authentic Korean cuisine, and meet Kampers and their families. It’s a great way to experience Korean culture and foods.

Last year, one of the community activities that Kampers could choose was kayaking. Kamp Kimchee teens spent a sunny afternoon at Strawberry Lake using kayaks and paddleboards that were provided and delivered by Crow Wing Kayaks.

It isn’t just Kamp Kimchee Kampers and families that love coming to Crosslake. The community loves when Kamp Kimchee is in town.

“Crosslake is a good fit for Kamp Kimchee because almost everything is within walking distance or a very short drive, and we offer a lot of activities. Kamp Kimchee, in turn, gives back to Crosslake by allowing us to experience their culture through authentic Korean lunches that we wouldn’t otherwise have access to. It warms my heart to see “Welcome Kamp Kimchee” signs and Korean flags throughout Crosslake. We welcome Kamp Kimchee with open arms, and we thank them for continuing to choose Crosslake.”

Birding

Drive the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway and get a great view of nature from the comfort of your car. The Birds of the Byway (Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway) offers 54 miles of opportunities to view our feathered friends.

The Northland Arboretum is designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA), and it’s right in the city limits of Brainerd/Baxter. With its mosaic of habitats, you’ll find an array of bird species (sandhill cranes, red-shouldered hawks, black-billed cukoo, eagles) as you hike the trails.

Handicap Accessible: The Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway, which is a scenic drive on paved roads, allows for handicap and disabled persons to see woods and wildlife from a van.

The Northland Arboretum’s easy access in the city limits of Brainerd/Baxter and wide trails with garden and nature views, are easily handicap accessible.

Crow Wing State Park and the Pillsbury State Forest also are close to Brainerd/Baxter and offer excellent birding opportunities. The Crow Wing State Park has 230 bird species on its park checklist and over 18 miles of trails. The Pillsbury State Forest has 25 miles of trails, and over 175 bird species have been documented.

Using a local guide increases your chances of seeing birds. Judd Brink is the owner and guide of MN Backyard Birds. Contact Judd at 218-838-4784 to plan a bird watching tour.

Historic Fire Tower

When traveling on Hwy 371 towards Pequot Lakes, chances are you’ve seen a giant metal structure towering over the trees. Decades ago, these fire towers gave foresters a bird’s eye view of spotting smoke—a telltale sign of wildfires. With advancements in technology, these towers became obsolete with many disappearing across the state.

The Paul M. Thiede Fire Tower Park opened to visitors June 2020. You can walk the Fire Tower Trail and the Wildlife Loop. Interpretive signs are along both trails. Pack a picnic lunch and eat under the pavilion. The 135 steps on the 100 ft. tower are worth the climb. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic 20 mile view in each direction.

The fire tower is open for you to climb from dawn to dusk daily. It’s closed in the winter for safety.

ATV and UTV Trails

Perhaps you like the idea of riding an ATV or UTV and traversing the trails with a little throttle. We have an expansive trail system covering hundreds of miles that cover all of the Lakes Area regions: Brainerd, Cuyuna Lakes, Emily and Outing, and Pine River.

The Spider Lake Trails, located in the Foot Hills State Forest near Pine River, is one of the most popular trail systems in Minnesota. You’ll travel 29 miles on diverse terrain. From smooth and sandy to rough and rocky, it’s exciting, challenging, and a great place to improve your riding ability. While riding the trails, you’ll also see lakes, ponds, and climb hills and slopes around the forest.

If you’re looking to rent UTVs, check out Seaberg Motor Sports or The Power Lodge.

THE 135 STEPS PAUL M. THIEDE FIRE TOWER ARE WORTH THE CLIMB. 100 FEET UP AT THE TOP, YOU’LL BE REWARDED WITH A PANORAMIC 20 MILE VIEW IN EACH DIRECTION.

Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing

There’s something peaceful about trekking through the woods on skis or snowshoes. The Northland Arboretum, which is within the Brainerd/Baxter city limits has 12 miles of trails with nearly 5 km lighted for evening skiing.

The Crow Wing State Park would be a great place to snowshoe, especially the beautiful trails that follow the Mississippi River.

You can snowshoe on the trails around the Paul Thiede Fire Tower Park just outside of Pequot Lakes.

Easy Riders in Brainerd rents snowshoes and cross country skis. The Crosslake Community Center also rents snowshoes.

Snowmobiling

If you’d like to experience snowmobiling but don’t have sleds, you’re in luck. You can rent snowmobiles and enjoy the hundreds of miles of groomed trails.

REASON FALL GOLF IS THE BEST

WHILE WE LOVE SUMMER FOR SO MANY OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES, THERE’S SOMETHING EXTRA SPECIAL ABOUT FALL. AND GOLF IS NO EXCEPTION. FROM PERFECT WEATHER, LOWER GREEN FEES TO OPTIMAL COURSE CONDITIONS, FALL IS THE PERFECT TIME TO BOOK YOUR NEXT GOLF WEEKEND.

#1 Course Conditions

All spring and summer golf maintenance teams have been working hard to get golf courses in optimal playing condition. The fruits of their labor really pay off come fall when greens are fast, and the fairways are manicured and deep green.

#2 Perfect Weather

Summer weather can be hot and humid, especially midday. Fall weather brings a reprieve from the heat. Crisp mornings give way to moderate temps—often in the high 50s to low 70s with no humidity, depending on the month. Of course it’s hard to predict Minnesota weather, but generally speaking, fall weather is predictably mild and perfect for a weekend on the course.

#3 Fall Colors

The Brainerd Lakes is home to some of the most beautiful golf courses in Minnesota. Courses here are cut right out of the Northwoods with rolling fairways, woods, wetlands, and lake views. On the golf course is one of the best places to immerse yourself in autumn’s red, orange, and yellow hues.

#4 Less Crowds

On a busy weekend in the summer, you may find yourself waiting on a slow golf group ahead of you. Or maybe you’re not an avid golfer, and you’re nervous you’re holding up faster groups behind you. You’ll find that during the fall, courses are less crowded with optimal tee times available.

THE FUN CAMARADERIE OF THE BUDDY WEEKENDS TO THE SIMPLE ENJOYMENT OF GOLFING WITH FAMILY ON A QUIET WEEKDAY. THE BEST GOLF OF THE YEAR IS USUALLY FOUND IN THE FALL.”

“Our course is unique as you’ll be the only group playing, booked in two-hour blocks. Five greens and six tee boxes make for a variety hole options. Play at your own pace!” Joby Goerges, owner, The Getaway Adventure Resort.

#5 Affordable Pricing

Hand-in-hand with less crowds is lower green fees. As the peak golf season wanes, you’re likely to find savings with lower rates at all area courses as well as stay and play fall package deals at the larger resorts with lodging and golf on-property. Take advantage of the price breaks and get in those last few rounds of golf—you’ll be happy that you did!

Where the Pros Come to Play

CRMC CHAMPIONSHIP

August 28–September 3, 2023

If you’re into golf, Cragun’s Legacy Courses will be the place to be in late August. Watch upand-coming professional golfers as they embark on their path to the PGA. We caught up with Jack Wawro, Director of Golf and CRMC Tournament Director, to learn more about this PGAsanctioned event!

Last year was the first CRMC Championship event. What’s it like to host this caliber of golf here?

JW We have some of the best golf courses in the world and to be able to finally offer a PGA Tour caliber event in this area is so exciting for all of us at the Legacy, our members, and all of the fans who came out to watch. The players loved our area and raved about the new golf course at The Legacy. They also put on an absolute show with some unbelievable golf. It is great to see that event grow the game of golf, benefit our charity, and showcase the area.

SCAN ME

What did the players love about the 2022 CRMC Championship?

JW The players were very complimentary of our newly renovated golf course. Many of them said that our course was the best condition and layout golf course they played on tour in 2022. They loved the playability of the course while also keeping them honest with a true test of their shot making capability.

What’s in store for the 2023 CRMC Championship?

JW We have a huge party/concert near the 18th green with our Saturday Night Jam. This year we are adding two more VIP areas on the golf course to compliment the large VIP area near the clubhouse. We also will have a new front nine that officially opens on July 1, which will give our returning tour pros a different look then last year. Needless to say we’re very excited for this year’s event!

Lake Side Dining

One of the best parts of vacation is gathering your crew and grubbing on some delicious local food. We have hundreds of delicious restaurants and specialty food establishments. BBQ. Sweet desserts. Pizza. Meals on-the-go. All of which are readily available no matter where you’re staying.

But, part of the allure of vacationing in lake country is traveling by boat to your food destination. (If you need a boat rental, see page 57 for boat rental companies.)

Here are a few suggestions on where to eat when you want to cruise by boat! Lakeside restaurants are popular and in most cases reservations are strongly recommended.

Gull Lake, Brainerd

Bar Harbor Supper Club

The extensive docks at Bar Harbor Supper Club offer easy access to get in and out. You’ll also have a beautiful view of the channel while dining on sandwiches, steaks, and seafood.

Nisswa Lake Park

One of the fun parts of boating on Gull Lake is cruising “up” the Chain. If you boat the whole Chain, you’ll end up on Nisswa Lake. Here, you can dock at the public slips at Nisswa Lake Park. A quick walk and through the tunnel, you’re in downtown Nisswa close to Main Street Ale House and Big Axe Brewing Company. Both offer outdoor seating, full menus, and craft beer. Main Street Ale House also offers craft cocktails.

Dock 77 at Quarterdeck Resort

Drop anchor at Dock 77 and enjoy delicious craft cocktails, small plates, salads, handhelds, and walleye. Dock 77 has lots of dock space for easy access. There’s also a lot of green space with firepits, Adirondack chairs for boat-watching, and space for the kids to splash in the water.

Ernie’s on Gull

Facing west, Ernie’s on Gull is a prime spot to watch the sun sink into the horizon while sipping the famous “Greenie” cocktail. A full outdoor dinner menu and quick grab-andgo style bites are available. Plus, live music and a playground for kids makes it a hot spot for all ages.

Gull Lake Cruises

Gull Lake Cruises, which is docked at Cragun’s Resort, offers a variety of public cruise options. If you’d like a cruise and have a full meal, you can do a brunch, lunch, or dinner cruise. If you’d like lighter fare, a happy hour or sweet tooth sunset cruise are a perfect end to your day!

Lost Lake Lodge

Lost Lake Lodge is quaintly tucked up from the water’s edge, which just adds to its intimate feel. For 70 years Lost Lake Lodge has been providing an upscale chef’s menu set among 80 acres of woods, water, and wildlife.

FOR MORE THAN 70 YEARS, Lost Lake Lodge has been offering guests exceptional dining and quiet serenity. This Gull Lake resort is located on 80 acres of woods, water, and wildlife. Their restaurant and bar are open to the public.

Whitefish Chain, Crosslake

The Wharf

The Wharf has been an iconic symbol on the Whitefish Chain for 35 years. Come by boat, grab some food and a Bloody Mary, and watch the boat traffic through the Rush and Cross lake channel. Here, you can come as you are—boat clothes are welcome! There’s also 25 boat slips for easy docking.

Zorbaz on Cross Lake

You can find this Minnesota chain restaurant on many hotspot lakes, and the Whitefish Chain is no exception. Specialty drinks, pizza (our favorite is the Zorbaz Club), and Mexican food in a fun atmosphere.

Moonlite Bay

Moonlite Bay has been a Crosslake icon since 1933. With 70 dock slips, there’s usually room for everyone who comes by boat. A new addition is the Pub 33 with flatbreads, salads, sliders, and more. There’s also a full dining menu in the main dining area. Moonlite Bay is the Crosslake entertainment headquarters with events and even music and dancing for those looking for late-night fun.

Bar Harbor is known for their Classic Boat Show. Enthusiasts come to view the wooden boats docked at the Gull Lake Restaurant.

Manhattan’s Restaurant

Located on Trout Lake (part of the Whitefish Chain), Manhattan’s has been serving upscale food for 94 years. Brunch, lunch, afternoon bites, and an extensive dinner menu make Manhattan’s a delicious stop no matter the time of day.

Docks at the Crosslake Recreation Area

Recent dock upgrades and shore restoration at the Crosslake Recreation Area have made it easy for you to enjoy Crosslake dining. Crosslake is very walkable with wide sidewalks. Once you’ve docked at the recreation area, you can walk to Andy’s, Riverside, Town Square to Rafferty’s, or Lake Country Crafts and Cones.

It’s a great spot to have a beer and listen to live music, which you’ll often find here.

7 Things to Consider When Buying a Home

BUYING A HOME IS A SIGNIFICANT LIFE CHANGING EVENT. IT’S EXCITING, OVERWHELMING, AND A PROCESS THAT HAS A LOT OF STEPS. THIS LIST OFFERS SOME GOOD TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND AS YOU LOOK TO BUY A HOME.

#1 Choose the Location

The Brainerd Lakes Area is made up of several smaller communities each with their own vibe. Spend some time in each area so you can get a feel for what it would be like to live in that community. Think about the things that are important to you and your family. Do you want to be in Brainerd/Baxter and close to all of the shopping and amenities? Do you want land that offers privacy and hunting? Choosing your preferred location is an important step in the home buying process.

#2 Work with an Agent

Finding a real estate agent who knows the ins and outs of the area and the lakeshore market is an invaluable resource. Agents can help you steer clear of a potential money pit or alternatively help look past easy cosmetic changes. Agents will guide you through the whole buying process—some of which will be unique to waterfront property.

SCAN ME
76 ExploreBrainerdLakes.com

#3 Create a Budget

When searching online listings, it’s easy to get overwhelmed, discouraged or even set unrealistic expectations. Getting a preapproval letter gives you a good idea of what sort of mortgage you can handle. Do you have 20% for a down payment? Are you a first-time buyer? Are you buying land and building new construction? Working with a trusted realtor and lender will help guide you through the different buying scenarios and help you stay within your means. This will help keep the buying experience a positive one.

#4 Drive the Commute

One reason many people enjoy living in the Brainerd Lakes is the slower pace. No freeways, interstates, or rush hours here. But that doesn’t mean that drive times are always easy. In the summer months, traffic increases as our population swells with visitors. Ask yourself if your commute to work, errands, and kids’ activities is something that you can do longterm. Much of the driving here is rural roads, so also keep that in mind during the snowy winter months.

#5 Think About the Space

It’s tempting when looking at online listings—or when watching real estate reality shows—to think bigger is better. Don’t get sucked into trends. Think about what you really need out of a home and how you will use the space. Some smaller homes have been designed with an efficient use of space. Some larger homes have a lot of wasted space. Will you be expanding your family and you need kid-friendly zones? Are you retiring here and would prefer onelevel or maintenance free living? Choose what works for you and how you can put your own touch on your new place.

FINDING A REAL ESTATE AGENT WHO KNOWS THE INS AND OUTS OF THE AREA AND THE LAKESHORE MARKET IS AN INVALUABLE RESOURCE. AGENTS WILL GUIDE YOU THROUGH THE WHOLE BUYING PROCESS—SOME OF WHICH WILL BE UNIQUE TO WATERFRONT PROPERTY.

#6 Look at Maintenance

When you’re at a showing, look past some of the cosmetic fixes like paint and décor choices that may prevent you from seeing the home’s positive features. Instead, look at things like the age of the shingles, kitchen appliances, and furnace. Look at utility costs from the current owner so you have a handle on these big ticket and fixed expenses that will add to your monthly mortgage. If the home needs some renovations and landscaping, do some research about general costs so you aren’t shocked at the expense later.

#7 Check the Neighborhood

A great way to get an idea of what life will be in your new home is to drive or walk around the neighborhood. How do the houses look? Are they well-maintained? Are there a lot of kids in the neighborhood? Or, if you’re on a lake, are your potential new neighbors seasonal? Take in the surroundings and really picture yourself living there.

WORLD CLASS MUSIC,

SMALL TOWN FEEL

HEARING WORLD-CLASS MUSICIANS MAY CREATE VISIONS OF TRAVELING TO A LARGE CITY WITH HEFTY TICKET PRICES. OR IT MAY BE SOMETHING YOU’VE ONLY SEEN ON TV. SCOTT LYKINS, FOUNDER OF LAKES AREA MUSIC FESTIVAL (LAMF) AND BRAINERD NATIVE, IS HELPING TO CHANGE THIS BY BRINGING WORLD RENOWNED MUSICIANS TO THE BRAINERD LAKES AREA.

FOUNDER OF LAKES AREA MUSIC FESTIVAL

How does the Brainerd Lakes Area compare to other classical musical destinations?

Fans of classical music travel the nation to attend summer music festivals in popular tourist destinations—places like the Santa Fe Opera, Aspen Music Festival, and the Grand Tetons Festival. The Lakes Area Music Festival, or “LAMF”, similarly offers high-quality cultural opportunities in one of the most popular summertime destinations in the Midwest: the Brainerd Lakes Area.

Just a couple hours north of the Twin Cities, this festival draws over 200 of the nation’s best classical musicians each year. From the San Francisco Symphony to the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera, from the Minnesota Orchestra to the Dallas Symphony, as well as Europe and Asia, these

musicians flock to central Minnesota because of the excellent quality of performance, and for the same reason everyone else goes to Brainerd– to spend time on the lakes, out in nature, and in the sun.

LAMF celebrates its 15th annual season this summer presenting over 50 concerts of chamber music, symphony orchestra, and opera, as well as education and outreach activities for audiences of all ages.

Photos in this article by David Boran, Courtesy Lakes Area Music Festival

You’re a graduate of Brainerd High School. How did BHS foster your love of music and the arts? What made you decide to start LAMF and bring it to the Brainerd Lakes?

The organization was created and continues to be led by Brainerd-native Scott Lykins. A professional cellist, he got his start by joining the orchestra in the Brainerd public school system. “At that time Brainerd had one of the strongest string programs, and I was fortunate to discover my love for classical music at an early age.” His high school years included weekly trips with his dad to the Twin Cities to participate in Minnesota Youth Symphonies and for private instruction at Orchestra Hall.

In 2009, Lykins completed his undergraduate studies at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. As in past summers he planned to return to the Lakes Area, but this time inviting some friends and colleagues from music school to join him. These five student musicians waited tables and enjoyed the Northwoods; but they also organized six concerts around the Lakes Area to stay in shape before returning to school in the fall. Enlisting a few members of the Minnesota and St. Paul Chamber Orchestras, these concerts comprised the first annual season of LAMF. Due to the overwhelming enthusiasm from the audience, the organizers decided to continue the festival and expand it every year since.

What kind of planning and organizing does it take to coordinate LAMF?

The organization, with a budget nearing $1 million, has a small staff considering its extensive year-round programming. Over the past 14 years a community of stakeholders— community members and musicians alike—has been built around the organization, with deep commitments to its success. Every year 200 artists and thousands of audience members come to Brainerd and are met by the hospitality of a team of 300 volunteers. For the weeks of the festival, these artists engage with the local community staying in host homes, eating at local restaurants, and performing in the concert hall, libraries, breweries, shelters, jails, and more.

Tell us about the new Gichi-Ziibi performing arts facility. Is this the venue for all concerts?

In 2021 construction of the Gichi-ziibi Center for the Arts was completed in downtown Brainerd. This 1,200-seat, state of the art facility is named with the Ojibwa word meaning “Big River”, referring to the Mississippi River that flows nearby. This facility has become home to the core performances of LAMF and other community organizations, while LAMF’s “Casual Classics” programs include outdoor concerts around the areas, yoga events with live music, children’s activities, and an annual downtown Brainerd block party.

What’s in store for 2023 season? How can people in the Brainerd Lakes attend a concert?

The 2023 Festival will run July 28 through August 20 with daily activities for visitors to check out. Donizetti’s opera Don Pasquale will be staged alongside symphonies by Brahms, Prokofiev, Mozart, and Shostakovich, and other vibrant works by composers living and writing music today.
