 Who we are?

 What is a mentor?

 Where are we?

For 25 years the Kinship Partners youth mentoring program has provided positive role models to youth in Crow Wing and southern Cass counties.

A mentor is a trusted adult friend with a long-term, consistent commitment to provide guidance and support to a youth. It’s all about being friends, sharing common interests, and being exposed to new interests.

The Brainerd office serves the Brainerd/Baxter area and the Cuyuna/Crosby area. You can contact us at 910 Pine Street, PO Box 642, Brainerd, MN 56401 (218) 829-4606.

 What do we do? We match volunteer adult partners (mentors), with a child between the ages of 5 – 14, who has common interests; we provide monthly activities which help to foster the development of their friendship.

Kinship Partners

 Why is mentoring important? Our community’s future rests on the hopes and dreams of our children and youth. Every child deserves a responsible and concerned adult who will provide guidance and support, help set and accomplish goals, and act as a positive role model.

Thank You Kinship Partners for making a difference in People’s lives. State Representative John Ward www.kinshippartners.org

In life we are provided very few situations in which we are rewarded just by walking into a room. Mentoring is one of those rare situations. Our experience has shown time and time again that your presence – just being you – has a powerful, lifelong positive impact on a child. So

Hero?

what is a Hero? Webster’s defines a hero as someone admired for their achievements or noble qualities. To a Kinship child a hero can be defined simply as someone who cares. Mentors are ordinary people, doing ordinary things with extraordinary results.

(Tights and Cape not required)

Mentoring is simple and the most successful relationships are built around common shared activities and interests. We provide the support, structure and supervision needed to make sure everyone experiences a safe and positive relationship. You only need to be yourself – a caring adult, willing to spend time with a child who needs a role model.

ARE READY!

The year 2010 was a tough year for our country, our state, our Kinship families and for our recruitment efforts. Only 24 new matches occurred during the year in the Brainerd area as compared to 33 matches in 2009 and 50 matches in 2008.

The Lakes Country office, serving the Pequot Lakes and Pine River-Backus school districts, looks forward to a brighter 2011. Fifteen new matches were made in 2010, down from 18 in 2009, but many long term partnerships remain strong.

The end of 2010 completed the Crosby 20 in 2010 mentoring campaign. Although we did not reach our goal, six “Heros” stepped up and are changing the lives of 6 very happy Kinship Kids. We still have 10 children waiting for YOU to be their mentor/friend.

ARE you ready to take on the role of mentor? Here are some kids who have been waiting for a year or longer to be matched with a new friend: Alyssa is 12 and is a sports-minded youngster. A young,

a patient guy to introduce him to the great outdoors and other healthy activities.

Tyler is a 7-year old inquisitive, active youngster. His ideal partner would be someone with energy, patience and a good sense of humor.

Avery is a sensitive 6th grade girl who loves animals, especially horses, snowmobiles, sports and school activities. An active woman or couple would be ideal for this young lady!

Jenna is a 9-year old who loves to get out and do new things.

Bradley is a 7th grader with many interests, but needs encouragement to act on his interests. These include hunting, golfing, and cooking. A perfect partner would be moderately active with an upbeat attitude.

An adult who also likes to get out and try new things would be perfect.

Joe is 14 and has been waiting for over two years! He would like his partner to enjoy fishing, playing board games and swimming as much as he does.

Colton is 9 with fishing as his #1 priority. He has some special needs, thrives on structure and needs a dependable partner. Watch his smile stretch from ear to ear as he joins his partner in doing routine, fun stuff!

These kids and all the other kids on our waiting list are ready. They hope YOU are ready, too.

Drew is 12 and very sports minded. He is small for his age and needs a man who is very structured. Kay is 9 and has three other siblings that have Kinship Partners. She loves doing arts and crafts and needs to have that someone special to step up and become her mentor. Peter is 8 and has had some major changes in the last 6 months. He wants to learn how to build a bird house so if you are good with your hands, Peter would love to be matched with you. Michelle is 12 and is very active is sports. She loves animals so a women or a family with pets would be ideal. Are you READY? I know that the kids in the Cuyuna area are. Take that first step and call Kinship Partners.

Now is the time to wipe out our waiting lists! Are you ready to make a difference?

Kinship Activities

T To

Kinship Partners sponsors many educational and social opportunities for children and their adult mentors. The purpose of these activities is to provide both fun and educational opportunities for the kids and to help alleviate some of the financial burden on the volunteer mentor. Kinship partnerships also receive discounts at a number of area businesses when they use their Kinship discount card.

Prospective mentors may wonder what type of activities should I do with my Kinship Partner. Doing everyday activities that you both enjoy helps make the time you are together important.

You can make a lasting impact on a child in need by financially supporting Kinship Partners.

Many of our partnerships enjoy doing outdoor activities no matter what the season. Fishing, swimming, going to sporting events, hiking, four wheeling, and snowmobiling are all activities our partners participate in. A number of our junior partners have learned to cook when with their adult partners.

(Make a difference in 2011)

Kinship Partners operates solely on community contributions. No federal, state or county funds are used. We rely largely on individuals, civic organizations, and local businesses as the base of our financial support. Our mission is not in recession. Please give today.

www.kinshippartners.org 218-829-4606 toll free 877-730-5437

Many of our mentors have introduced their junior partners to the importance of volunteering in the community by bringing them along when they volunteer at HART or the arboretum or when they assist at Kinship events. Board games, working on arts and crafts project, reading together— all these are activities that can build your friendship with your partner. Just visiting and listening to what is going on in their lives is a great way to enjoy time together. It’s the time you spend with them that is most significant.

How you can be involved  Be a mentor – Mentors are caring adults - individuals, couples, or families - in our community who truly like kids. The mentor application process is thorough - providing three references, a criminal background check, and an interview prior to being matched. A mentor must be at least 18 and there is not an upper age limit. We currently have mentors in all age brackets all the way to wonderful mentors who are in their 80s.

 Be a volunteer – Many short term projects are available for volunteers. You may help by serving on a special event committee. Volunteers are also always needed to help with our planned activities for our Kinship Kids. You may also want to organize your service club or church group to sponsor and chaperone an activity for our kids.

 Be an ambassador – An ambassador is an authorized message carrier. Our ambassadors are the life source for the success of recruiting mentors for Kinship Partners. As our message carrier, you will help to raise the awareness of the great need the young people in your community have for volunteer mentors. You will be serving as Kinship’s voice in your church, service club, or workplace.
