much does the ball roll with each club and where does the golf ball have to land to finish near the hole.

Putting practice should include time working on both direction and distance control. An excellent way to work on direction is to find a straight putt and start out three feet from the hole. Try making five putts in a row. After you make five, move to six feet and make five in a row.

Continue with this process up to 12 feet.

This gets a player use to the ball going in the hole, creates a solid stroke and builds confidence. To practice distance control, put a ball at 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 feet. Place a club on the ground two to three feet behind the hole. The purpose is to hit each putt either in the hole or in the “zone” between the hole and the club on the ground. Start at the first ball, if the ball finishes in the zone, move back. If the ball finishes short of the hole move forward to the previous distance.

Putt until you get in the zone from each distance. Do this several times from different places on the putting green.

If you are going to practice your golf game, do it with a purpose. Follow these guidelines and I promise your practice sessions will start to produce results.

Having the opportunity to watch a lot of people practice and work on their games, one of the biggest things I see is that people don’t practice the right things or practice the right way. People frequently tell me they practice all the time, but never get better.

Follow these guidelines and I guarantee your game will improve.

When you go to the driving range, start your practice session with a short iron (8 or 9 iron) and work your way into the longer clubs. Something I see frequently is the first club people pull out of their bag and start hitting is the driver.

This may also be the only club they use in their practice session. The driver is the most difficult club to hit and the most difficult to groove a golf swing. The short clubs are easier to hit solid and groove a swing. If you are hitting the ball solid with the short clubs this will carry over into the long irons and woods.

Make sure to choose a target when practicing. In making an efficient golf swing, how we align our body in relationship to the target is very critical. If a golfer is not lined up correctly to their target, the golfer will create a swing to try to get the ball back to the target.

More than likely this won’t be an effective golf swing. To learn proper alignment lay two clubs on the ground. One club should be on the target line and the other club, our body line, should be parallel to the first.

Shots from 40 yards from the green and in account for approximately 60% of a player’s score, yet I rarely see people practice their chipping or pitching.

If a player would at the very least put a minimal amount of their practice time into chipping and pitching their scores would improve. Practice chipping with a variety of clubs, 7 iron through sand wedge and learn how each club reacts.

Roots and wings drive growth at Crosswoods Golf Course in Crosslake

By SARAH NELSON KATZENBERGER CROSSLAKE — Golf is life.

That’s the mantra of owner and operator Michael Stone at Crosswoods Golf Course in Crosslake. It makes sense — for Stone, golf is in his blood. For more than 50 years, Crosswoods has slowly and steadily expanded its presence in the ever-changing golf scene of the Brainerd lakes area. “We really have become a local favorite,” Stone said.

Stone’s parents opened Crosslake’s first mini-golf in 1967. Golf in the lakes area was just starting to take off, and the Stones saw an opportunity to get in on the game early.

Over the last five decades the first mini-golf venture has evolved into and ever-expanding operation including a driving range, a 29-par golf course, and over the last few years, a full 27-holes of scenic golf greatness.

Stone has been part of the Crosswoods expansion for most of his adult life. After finishing high school and serving with the Coast Guard for several years, Stone returned to Crosslake to throw his time and talent into bettering the dream his parents established long ago.

“Pretty much everything out here, I have designed or constructed myself,” Stone said.

For more than 20 years, Stone and his wife, Kelly have owned and operated Crosswoods Golf Course. With the most recent change coming with an expansion to a 27-holes in the form of three nine-hole courses, they have put the Crosslake course right on par with many of the large resorts in the lakes area.

“The expansion really adds a whole new dimension to our course,” Stone said. “People are still discovering the change.”

Located right in the heart of Crosslake, about a half mile north of Reed’s Market on County Road 3, Crosswoods Golf Course offers a uniquely northern Minnesota golf experience. The scenic stand-alone course is set around a 100-acre natural lake free of boat traffic and the development found at other golf courses in the lakes area. The quiet backdrop features the best bits of scenery Northern Minnesota has to offer -- including a regular appearance for resident trumpeter swans and nesting loons.

“It really is beautiful,” Stone said. “There’s not another place quite like it.”

Stone says more often than not, Crosswoods opens the course in March and maintains regular hours until mid to late November. Golf before Thanksgiving dinner? At Crosswoods, it’s a definite possibility.

“We’re typically the first to open and the last to close, “Stone said. “It happens that the last two years, we have been the first course to open in the entire state of Minnesota.”

As one of Northern Minnesota’s higher-end, affordable golf courses, Stone said Crosswoods meets a great cross-section of golf enthusiasts.

The course has a par 3 option for novice golfers or all ages, just getting into golf. Golf Pro Tim Trott offers lessons to players looking to improve their game.

For 18-holes of golf at Crosswoods, prices for seniors start at $32 per person (includes golf cart) to weekend fees of $54 per person on the weekends. Unlimited membership runs from open through early June for $199. Crosswoods also has golf leagues are available for men and women throughout the golf season. And for those looking to putt around or show off their swing, the mini-course and driving range are open daily. “We truly offer something for everyone,” Stone said.

Putting With A Purpose

This old saying may sound silly, but has certainly stood the test of time. When it comes to putting, there are many different ways to get the ball in the hole. Every player has his/her own grip, stance, stroke, tempo, etc. One common aspect that most can agree on is that your hands should never be in battle with each other, meaning, they shouldn’t fight for control.

I like to think my left hand (for right handed players) is my direction hand.

of the putter and will generally control which way the putt will roll. For short putts (inside of 10 feet) the main objective is accuracy. With this being said, I mainly focus on having a slightly tighter grip with my left hand while pulling my putter through the putt, while having my right hand/arm just along for the ride.

Putting can be easily compared to pulling a trailer with your car. It is much easier to pull the trailer to the destination rather than pushing it. This is similar to putting because it is much easier to make a nice stroke if you pull the putter through with your left arm rather than push it with you right arm.

For longer putts, speed is the primary objective, or getting the ball to the hole. I like to imagine a three-foot circle around the hole and try to “lag” the putt into that circle for an easy two putt. This helps eliminate those dreaded three-putts.

Build your skills for short and long putts by using these drills:

Short Putts

1. Take four balls and place them in a three-foot circle around a relatively flat hole.

2. Putt each ball using only the left hand (right hand for left handed players).

Let your left hand/arm extend out to the hole as you putt through each ball.

3. After completing three rounds of four with the left hand, place both hands on the putter and complete one more rotation.

Long Putts

Pick a relatively flat hole on the putting green. Measure out and mark 15, 20, and 25 feet away from the hole in a straight line.

Place an alignment stick flat on the ground three feet behind the hole.

Practice putting from each location, having the ball either go in the hole or stop in the space between the hole and alignment stick. This gives the ball a chance to go in the hole, but if it misses, makes for an easy two putt.

I hope these putting tips help you shave some strokes on the course and give you the confidence you need on the putting green. Have fun!

rainerd lakes area golf courses are doing all they can to provide opportunities to get your children away from screens.

Between offering free golf, free lessons, playing partners and more, it can not be said the lakes area doesn’t want to help parents provide and outlet from their electronic devices.

Aitkin Community Education in partnership with Cuyuna Rolling Hills and Ruttger’s Bay Lake Lodge is hoping to match new junior golfers with older, more experienced players. It’s part of the Age to Age Grant received from the Northland Foundation.

The league hopes to have experienced players teach the game to area juniors. Registered youth will be partnered with an adult mentor who will drive the cart and teach the game.

According to the community ed website, “This is not a golf instruction or lesson per se, but rather someone explaining the little parts of the game like etiquette, rules, terminology and more. Juniors do need to have some knowledge of the game before going out on the course.”

The program will run from 9 a.m. to noon from June 17 to July 29. Both adult and youth players need to register online. Adult mentors are free, while junior players will have a $25 fee, which includes cart, green fees and six 12

Whitefish Golf Club north of Pequot Lakes partners with the Pequot Lakes Community Education department. It will start golf lessons at the end of April and it is open to fourth, fifth and sixth graders.

New to the area are Youth on Course facilities.The Minnesota Golf Association is going to run a Youth on the Course program where junior golfers can purchase a Youth on the Course card for $15 from the MGA website. www.mngolf.org/YouthOnCourse.

This card allows juniors to play at participating courses for $5.

There are no time restrictions on Ruttger’s Alec 9. For Jack’s 18, it is after 3 p.m.

Breezy Point Resort’s Traditional course is open anytime Monday-Thursday and after 3 p.m. Sundays. The Reversible 9 at Cragun’s Legacy Courses is open anytime. Crosswoods has a number of options. For nine holes the cost is $3 for 18 holes it’s $5 and to play the par 3 course it’s just $1.

The championship course is open everyday after noon. The Par 3 Course is open anytime.

Minnesota National Golf Course in McGregor is offering the deal after 2 p.m. on its championship course. On its Par 33 course, play is available all day Monday through Thursday and after 2 p.m. on the weekend.

“Kids can sign up by the month -- June, July or August. That’s just kind of a continuation of when we introduced kids to the game the phy-ed classes we did this winter and hopefully they come out this summer and start playing.”

Cuyuna Rolling Hills is also offering free golf lessons. It’s become an annual tradition. From 9-10 a.m. Tuesday mornings starting on June 4 through June 25, juniors can come and receive free golf instruction. There will be three to four instructors working with the juniors on full swing basics, chipping and putting.

“It’s been actually a really good turn out,” Cuyuna Rolling Hills owner Terry Thompson said. “We had to control the turnout because it was almost getting too big. It’s been really good and we’ll continue that. We don’t have any junior events, but the program that we do is really strong.”

When you rush the downswing, nothing works in proper sequence.

The shoulders outrace the arms, the arms outrace the hands and the hands outrace the club. The speed you think you’ve got is expended too soon and the clubhead is actually losing speed as

it strikes the ball.

I start my downswing by shifting my weight easily back to my left side and letting my arms fall downward in front of my chest. By giving my arms a little head-start, they work in unison with my shoulders and allow me to get the most power through the ball. If I let gravity rule, my timing is better and I’m able to obtain effortless speed and power while remaining in control of the shot.

That’s the best way to describe the next step of the Brainerd Lakes Area Tour Showcase, which is the brainchild of Ron Sanders and now a committee of 25 members to bring the PGA’s Web.com Tour to Brainerd.

Last year’s inaugural showcase was a success on many fronts. From player feedback to tournament conditions and the fluidity of the event, praise was high.

But to catch the PGA’s attention, Sanders knows his Showcase needs to be bigger and better.

“Financially, we need to build this to $100,000 to $500,000-$600,000 to a million in 2020,” Sanders said.

“We’re trying to be positioned for 2020 to be an official tour event. We think we have about a 50/50 chance. It’s all about community support and it’s all about money. At the end of the day, the PGA Tour doesn’t want to come some place where they don’t see financial viability. They don’t want to bring the tour to town and then have it fail. They don’t want to do that and we don’t want to do that either.

“We’ve kind of shifted our focus a little bit. We didn’t change our focus, but we refocused. We’ve had tremendous support from the community organizations. They’ve all now gotten behind this and we’ve actually formed a little community action committee.”

Sanders received an operations guide from the PGA tour that was 75 pages long. That prompted him to grow the tournament committee to oversee the different details needed for the Showcase into a tour event.

The entire premise or focus of the event is to showcase central Minnesota.

“Our whole purpose in doing this in central Minnesota and in Brainerd is for economic development,” Sanders said. “A claim can be made that in the 50 mile radius of the area here, there are probably more championship golf courses than there is any place else in the country. Yet, when I live in Phoenix and people ask me where my tour-

nament is going to be and I tell them Brainerd, they always say, ‘Well, where is that?’

“So we’re trying to do two things.

We’re trying to enhance the community and charitable causes in the community and we’re trying to put Brainerd on the map as a golf destination.”

To do that he’s taken key recreational assets and featuring them in the fourday event, which kicks off Monday, Aug. 19 at Cragun’s Resort.

Monday’s events will feature a morning and afternoon fishing tournament followed by a pairings gala complete with live entertainment.

“Last year, we brought in five fishing guides and we took people out in the morning and in the afternoon,” Sanders said. “We want to do this so the pros enjoy themselves, but we want them to go back to their tours and say, ‘Not only do these guys have their stuff together, but

they even have a fishing tournament.’”

Sanders hopes to line up 20 guides in the morning and 20 guides in the afternoon to accommodate 40 groups. Each group will consist of a professional angler, a professional golfer and a sponsor participant.”

Last year’s event featured a pro-am scramble. This year the event will feature two pro-ams. A morning scramble followed by an afternoon stroke play format.

Both pro-ams are scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 20.

“I visited with Camp Ripley and the military is going to be involved somehow,” Sander said. “I haven’t totally figured it out yet. Then I’m going to meet with Brainerd International Raceway to bring the motorsport piece into it. I think we can do some cross marketing and putting together VIP packages. It just so happens the weekend before

our event is the NHRA Nationals. That’s all in the thinking stages, but it’s these types of things that keep me up at night thinking.”

On the 21-22 will be a two-day unofficial tournament featuring players from multiple tours. Sanders is hoping to bring in 100 players to compete for the $100,000 purse.

“We’ve talked to a number of professionals from various tours along with some section professionals and people are excited to play for the type of purse that we’re putting out there, which is $100,000,” Cragun’s Legacy Courses Director of Golf Chuck Klecatsky said.

“They’ll probably go out as threesomes throughout the entire day because we’re hoping to have 100 players.

“We are going to put our best foot

forward as far as the conditions of the greens go. We will probably have the rough a little bit longer, but we’re not trying to make it unplayable because it is just one week out of our summer and we’re busy before that and after that.

Although the greens will probably be a little bit more speedier, the rest of the course will be the same. Matt McKinnon (Cragun’s course superintendent) keeps it in tournament shape every day. It won’t be that different.”

Bud Chapman is scheduled to return as the honorary starter. The 96-year-old is still playing golf five days a week.

“Things will look pretty much like it did last year, but it will be twice as big,” Sanders said.

could present an interesting challenge around the greens. You may have even experienced this a time or two in one of your rounds. Any time you are presented with a thin, tight, bare lie then the Texas Wedge might be the smart play for you to try.

The Texas Wedge is just a unique term for using your putter from off the green.

The reason you may want to do this is that it can be a lot safer than trying to nip the ball perfectly with a wedge from the tight, bare lies mentioned above.

Ask yourself this question: on average can you get the ball closer to the hole by putting or chipping? Most people would choose a putt over a chip any day. And, rightly so. It’s generally much easier to judge and control the roll of the ball than by trying to control trajectory as well.

No. 4. Your backswing and follow through should be about the same distance. Judge your distance by the length of your swing.

This helps you hit down on the ball hitting the sweet spot of the clubface, plus reduces the chance of scooping the ball. If you’re scooping the ball, the clubface is moving upwards, increasing the chances of hitting a blade shot.

No. 6. Pick a spot to land the ball letting it roll out to the hole. This gives you

To chip more consistently try the following things, based on a right-handed golfer.

No. 1. Get small by getting a little closer to the ball and choking up on the club a little.

No. 2. Keep your feet close together and keep your weight in one spot throughout the entire swing, preferably more toward your left foot. This helps reduce the chance of shifting your weight and improves your crispness of contact.

No. 3. Keep your left arm and the golf club in a straight line throughout

So, when should you use the Texas Wedge? Generally, whenever your approach shot finishes in the fairway or fringe, a couple of yards off the putting surface, or in extreme circumstances, when the areas around the green are so dry and bare, or tightly manicured, that the length of grass doesn’t affect the roll of the ball much. The beauty of the Texas Wedge is that you don’t have to alter anything about your putting stroke.

Just make your same motion, taking into consideration the pace you’ll need to hit it to get it through the fringe.

A good rule of thumb to live by with your short game is to: “Putt when you can’t chip, chip when you can’t putt, and pitch when you can’t chip.”

he number three is a lucky number in golf.

Par, birdie or eagle. Put that lucky number in your practice routine and watch your scores come down.

Start by using three balls and a putter.

Try and putt all three balls the same distance. Mix up putts short, medium and long putts. Can you hit the same putt the same distance three times? Repeat this three ball drill with a chipping club

and then move up to longer pitching.

The key is to see if you can repeat a shot three straight times.

Take this same tip out to the range and break your session into three ball shot targets. You’ll get more out of your practice time and the thought about proper distance control will help lower your scores.

Enjoy The Beach With These Tips

f you are reading this article, that means you are a golfer. As a golfer, we want you to have as much flat out fun as possible out of your round of golf.

Saving a stroke here or there, and reducing the challenges the hazards present will result in getting the most out of your round and having a good time. To get it to that point, there are a few tips that are simple and go a long way.

First, I will highlight a few tips, then I will go into some detail on playing out of bunkers.

SIMPLE TIPS

Don’t stop swinging the golf club -- 10 or 15 minutes a day will not only keep your muscles in shape, but also maintains a sense of balance that will equate to a better golf swing. Do you remember in the spring after your first round? The next day you are so sore. Well, that’s from not using those muscles regularly. Swing the golf club.

I know most of you walk a lot, but walking is great for the heart, legs, and upper body muscles. Even if you use a cart while playing, make sure you get your walking in either on the course from your cart to the ball, or around the home.

Another simple thing: squeeze a rubber ball to strengthen your hands for a better grip.

These three things are great to do during the season and may be even more important during the off-season.

BUNKER PLAY

Green-side bunkers Maybe you’ve heard someone say, “I’d rather hit in the bunker than miss a green in the rough.” Well, I think it’s a true statement. Sand is easier to hit out of than rough. Rough can be inconsistent. You can get grass between the ball and club in both short and thick rough. Sand is just more consistent.

The keys to green-side bunkers are: Take a solid stance.

Follow through, always .. always .. always.

Never stop your swing -- never.

Keep your lower body still.

Your upper body does all the work while you swing through your shot (never stop -see above).

FAIRWAY BUNKERS

With fairway bunkers, the first three points from above also apply; stance, follow-through and never stop your swing.

A key to fairway bunker play is to try to make contact with the front of the golf ball.

Focus on this as the point of impact. This gives you a sense of making better contact

with the ball and a better result. We tend not to hit as many heavy shots.

A final consideration with fairway bunkers is to make the right club selection. If there is any bunker lip in front of you, make sure you take a club with enough loft to get the ball up and out. We even saw it in The Masters where one of the professionals did not clear the lip of a fairway bunker. You would rather be 15 yards short of the green from using a higher lofted club, than 100 yards short because you caught the lip or even worse leaving it in the bunker.

Take these pointers and you can start to feel confident with the sand becoming your friend, not the dreaded hazard.

n last year’s Best of The Brainerd Lakes, voters selected Emily Greens as the lakes area’s top golf course.

The 18-hole course that boasts the largest green in Minnesota has one key selling point -- fun.

Owner Gregg Gamble stresses the fun factor at his course along with affordability. Despite having some of the lowest green fees, Gamble still slashes his prices for juniors playing with their grandparents and now great-grandparents.

The fun factor was a key element in voters choosing to highlight the hard work of Gamble and the course at Emily Greens.

Coming in second in fan voting was Cragun’s Legacy Courses. The 45-hole golf complex features two 18-hole championship courses and a revers-

Timing Your Hip Turn

O

ne of the most common mistakes golfers make is turning their hips too soon on the down swing. This move has the tendency to cause the body to over rotate, forcing an outside-to-in swing path, creating a block, slice, or a pull.

To fix this move, try to feel like you are bumping your hip toward the target on the downswing to avoid turning the body too soon. Follow this move with keeping your right elbow ‘tight’ to your side and maintain an extended left arm

through the swing. Let the natural momentum turn your body through the swing and try to finish with your hips square to your target.

If you’re on the range, try to imagine keeping your right heel on the ground a little longer to keep those hips from turning too quick. Couple this with placing a towel or head cover under your right arm to keep from casting the club, and you’ll slowly see those blocks or pulls become fewer and fewer.
