NISSWA LEGENDS

JOE HAEG HAS ENJOYED A LONG NFL CAREER

J

oe Haeg said he has been blessed to have a lengthy NFL career. And now he’s ”paying back” the community where his football career started. Haeg, an offensive lineman who played with NFL teams over seven seasons, attended Nisswa Elementary School and eventually Brainerd High School, where he graduated in 2011. Haeg graduated from North Dakota State University where he won five FCS National Championships from 2011-2015. He was then drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the fifth round of the 2016 draft. After three years with the Colts, Haeg signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and won a Super Bowl title in 2020. He signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021 and with the Cleveland Browns in 2022. He was released by the Browns in the summer of 2023. “I’m currently a free agent,” the 30-year-old Haeg said in November. “I’ve had (NFL) teams show interest, but I’m waiting for the right fit if that comes available. I’m looking for the right opportunity for myself and my family.” In the meantime, Haeg has been participating in activities back in the Brainerd lakes area. He plans to host his third annual golf tournament in the summer of 2024, which is part of his Game Winning Drive charity that benefits the Brainerd High School football program. “The golf tourney has been great to raise money for the (BHS) football program,” Haeg said. “My passion is to find ways to give back to the community. I was also a celebrity judge for the Nisswa Turtle Races last year.”

Joe Haeg was a celebrity judge for the Nisswa Turtle Races.

Joe and Nichole Haeg.

As for his next career, Haeg admits he’s not sure what it will be. “I went to school for civil engineering,” he said, “but it has been seven years since I was in college. I would probably need to go back and retake some classes. There are different ways my (career) could go.” Haeg already has many football memories to cherish, even if he doesn’t play another snap in an NFL game. “I’m proud of how my career has gone,” he said. “I dreamed about being a (Minnesota) Twin, Viking or NHL player. It’s crazy how I got to this point - going back to having an opportunity to walk on at NDSU and pursue my engineering degree. That was a life-changing opportunity. Playing football has been a blast. I’ve met so many amazing people.” Joe Haeg played for three years with the Indianapolis Colts.

One of Haeg’s favorite football memories happened as a member of the Brainerd Warriors. “Honestly, winning (five) national championships in college and then the Super Bowl were unbelievable, but going to state with the Brainerd Warrior football team my junior and senior years (in the fall of 2009 and 2010) is still one of my top accomplishments,” he said.

IMPROVEMENTS GUIDED BY A MASTER PLAN ARE IN THE WORKS

isswa already has great parks. Now a master parks and recreation plan will ensure those parks get even

better. The master plan will guide the city’s investments in parks and recreation for the next 20 years as the city looks at how best to take care of what it has and where changes and new ideas can have the most impact. The plan mainly focuses on Nisswa’s existing city park, as well as city-owned parkland on Camp Lincoln Road. Nisswa’s vision is to “provide an interconnected, highly accessible, citywide recreational system with adequate public and private amenities that offer diverse and quality indoor and outdoor recreation for all.” Overview A survey of park users showed paved trails and the city playground are the most used park features. People want access to water for recreation, with a beach or splash pad being the most desired elements. Also desired are standalone pickleball courts, natural resources enhancement, additional playground features and more trails. Nisswa offers exceptional recreational offerings for a community of its size. Parks are centrally focused, and outstanding new investments and park development include the Gull Lake Trail and Nisswa Lake Park. Nisswa City Park The idea is to enhance what the park offers to ensure the facilities are great for the next generation of park users. To this end, plans call for improving circulation and improving the city park as a year-round destination. Also important are adding pickleball and tennis courts, a “destination playground,” covered ice rink and improving the softball and baseball fields. Camp Lincoln Park This park will be kept natural but with restrooms and parking. It will offer nature trails, signs telling the cultural and ecological story of the parkland, and will keep the site and Camp Lincoln Road natural and quiet in character. Find the master plan on the city’s website at https://bit.ly/3m7qnbe.

isswa is home to the Paul Bunyan Trail, and now the Gull Lake Trail as well. The paved, multi-use Gull Lake Trail will total 21 miles through four communities - Nisswa, Lake Shore, Fairview Township and East Gull Lake - when complete, traveling around the north, west and south ends of Gull Lake. All that remains is a portion to complete the link between Lake Shore and Nisswa, as well as the final part in Fairview Township. Both Nisswa and Fairview Township received a final grant from the Greater Minnesota Regional Parks & Trails Commission to complete their parts of the trail, likely in summer 2024. Lake Shore must secure funding to complete its part of the trail. In Nisswa, recreation enthusiasts will find the 3.1-mile paved Gull Lake Trail along Lower Roy Lake Road and Hazelwood Drive. The trail will take people to Nisswa Lake Park and the tunnel that goes under Highway 371 to downtown Nisswa and the Paul Bunyan Trail. Lake Shore has 2.276 miles of trail that is adjacent to, but detached from, County State Aid Highway 77; 1.77 miles of widened shoulder along CSAH 77; and 1.3 miles from Bar Harbor Supper Club, over the Gull Lake Narrows, past Zorbaz on Gull to the Whitney Gravel Pit entrance. The remaining portion will connect Nisswa and Lake Shore.

Fairview Township has the longest trail portion at 7.8 miles. The north (3.1 mile) segment extends from Sandy Point Road to a half mile south of Sunshine’s Summerhouse, with a .6-mile gap in the middle that still must be completed. The southern 3.1 miles extends from Hunters Ridge Trail to Wood Drive/East Gull Lake. Paul Bunyan Trail The Paul Bunyan Trail runs 115 miles, including through downtown Nisswa. This multi-use recreational trail built on a former railroad bed has long been used by those who like to walk, hike, bike, inline skate and snowmobile. The trail extends from Crow Wing State Park south of Brainerd to Lake Bemidji State Park in Bemidji. Area communities the trail travels through include Brainerd, Baxter, Merrifield, Nisswa, Pequot Lakes, Jenkins, Pine River, Backus and Hackensack. Nisswa offers trail access, a parking lot, rest area and public restrooms for trail users.

TRADITION CONTINUES

WE TEND TO BE THE FIRST STOP WHEN THEY GET INTO TOWN AND WE ALSO TEND TO BE THE ONE THEY MAKE SURE THEY HIT ON THEIR WAY OUT. IT’S BECOME SUCH A TRADITION. - KELSEY BEAN

THE CHOCOLATE OX’S MAGICAL EXPERIENCE CONTINUES 20-YEAR EMPLOYEE CARRIES ON TRADITION AS OWNER

K

elsey Bean has owned The Chocolate Ox candy and ice cream store in Nisswa for the past year, but many likely recognize her from years gone by. Bean started working at the popular downtown Nisswa store as a high school sophomore, never dreaming it would become her career. “This was technically my first job I ever had,” Bean said. Rob and Loriese Stoll bought the former Nisswa Country Store in 2003 and renamed it The Chocolate Ox. Bean joined them a year later, in 2004. “And here I am 20 years later,” she said. After graduating from Brainerd High School in 2006, Bean earned a teaching degree from St. Cloud State University four years later. She was an elementary school teacher for 15 years with the Sauk Rapids-Rice School District. In all that time, she never left The Chocolate Ox. She continued working there during the summers while in high school and college, as well as while teaching. “I would teach during the week and then help on the weekends,” Bean said. She managed the downtown location for 18 years. 34 | Nisswa Chamber Guide 2024

Grand View Lodge. “I like being present every day. It’s important to have my face at both locations and to check in with staff,” she said. “This has really always been my dream,” Bean said of owning The Chocolate Ox. “To keep this dream, this tradition, alive in Nisswa. “It still feels like home to me. I’m still behind the counter. I’m still scooping ice cream,” she said. Defining what The Chocolate Ox is to people, Bean said: “Think of your fondest childhood memory - vacation, whether you went to summer camp or you vacationed at a cabin or you had a tradition of going to a resort. But you think of your fondest memory growing up as a child and the joy that that tradition that your family had during your summer months brought you, and that’s the Chocolate Ox. “It’s so much more than the candy and ice cream. It’s a memory. It’s a feeling. It’s a pure feeling of joy and happiness. It’s not just a storefront,” Bean said. “It’s a core childhood memory for a lot of people.”

Her sister, Emily Beutz, owns two Nisswa businesses - Emily Kaye Bridal and Nisswa Tuxedo next door, both on Smiley Road off Highway 371. “We’ve worked so hard to make this a magical experience and to make this such a tradition for families that it was important to me after being here for so long - I was so invested in it - I wanted to make sure that it continued,” Bean said of agreeing to buy the business. “This has turned into a destination, a tradition for a lot of families,” she said. “We tend to be the first stop when they get into town and we also tend to be the one they make sure they hit on their way out. It’s become such a tradition.” She sees kids she first met in car seats who have now graduated from college and still visit the Nisswa staple. “It’s so fun to see what it’s turned into … to make it such a magical experience that it becomes a family tradition,” she said. Staff plays a big part in the business’s success, and Bean praises the staff retention. So many people begin work there while in high school and stay through their college years for a total of five to eight years. Bean works hard, but life hasn’t always been easy. In September 2021, her husband, Chris Bean, died of a heart aneurysm at age 35. They’d been together for 17 years and married for 10 years. He had just opened a medical supply business that Bean now owns. She’d teach during the day and do medical business work at night while still filling in at The Chocolate Ox as well. “It’s important to me to honor that legacy he had,” she said of her husband’s business. She resigned her teaching position in June 2022 to give herself a break. Becoming owner of The Chocolate Ox last year was a perfect fit. “I’m such a people person. My parents

GENERATIONS OF TRADITION

THE HUGHES CREW TRADITION

I

BY TERESA SUTTER n the summer of 1944, my grandma and grandpa loaded up their car in Peoria, Illinois, “borrowed” some extra gas coupons (as rationing was still going on) and headed over 600 miles north to visit their friend, Bill Urban, a fellow centralIllinoisan, who had recently been deeded a resort on Upper Gull Lake in Nisswa, Minnesota, as a debt payment. They spent a week fishing, playing cards, enjoying the water and the woods, and reveling in time away from their five children. At the end of the week, Grandma and Grandpa vowed to return, not realizing then that their descendants wouldn’t miss a summer in Nisswa for the next 80 years. In 1946, Grandma and Grandpa decided to bring their six kids along on the annual trip to Urban’s Resort, this time staying for three weeks. They loaded up their ’38 Plymouth, spent the night in Black River Falls and arrived in Nisswa two days later. Thus began the tradition of my mom and her five siblings spending three weeks each summer in Nisswa. They played on the dock (which all five cabins shared) and on the slide in the lake, caught frogs, worms and minnows, fished and swam in the water for hours, and picked blueberries and raspberries. My uncle tells the story of sneaking into the icehouse and grabbing chunks of ice to slide down the hill into Upper Gull Lake when Grandma and Grandpa were dancing, gambling and enjoying a night out at Bar Harbor Supper Club. In the ‘50s, as my mom and her siblings entered their teenage years, they became good friends with many locals such as the 40 | Nisswa Chamber Guide 2024

Castners and the Schmidt kids, whose parents were the caretakers of Urban’s Resort. Not having a boat themselves, my mom and her four sisters spent the first few days finding boys that did! They’d often head down to the clubhouse at Cold Springs Resort to play pool, listen to music, pick up a game of ping pong and enjoy ice cream on a hot summer night while swatting the mosquitoes away. In the mid-’60s my mom met my dad on a blind date and he happened to own a boat! She convinced him to drive his boat

up from Towanda, Illinois, to Nisswa for a week one summer. Dad stayed at Cold Springs Resort with a friend, taking my mom and her siblings out the Gull Lake Chain in his boat for skiing, fishing, swimming and cruising. Mom and Dad married in ’66 and shortly thereafter, my mom’s sister bought a cabin on Upper Gull. Mom and Dad and my uncle soon followed suit, buying a property on Upper Gull as well. In the ‘70s and ‘80s, my parents loaded their five kids and an assortment of cats and dogs into the pickup and drove the 600+ miles north to spend the summer in Nisswa! My siblings and I spent our summer days fishing, swimming, learning to ski from mom - who would take off from the dock - boat riding, chasing waves in our flivver and just having the time of our lives. Each morning began with a turtling trip to Stoney Brook or Cold Springs to catch turtles for the turtle races. Soon Mom had the idea of renting out turtles to kids at the resorts who didn’t have them and in the late ‘70s, we became the first turtle brokers, renting out turtles for $1 and giving you back 25 cents if you returned the turtle to us at the end of the race. Grandma never joined us for the turtle races, but always wanted to know which turtles were the best racers! In the evenings, we’d play cards at the cabin or catfish at the dock while listening to The Power Loon. Mom and Dad would on occasion meet up with her sister and brother and local friends and have a night out at Bar Harbor. Our older cousins down the lake would drive over in their boat to babysit. We’d boat into Nisswa and dock at the Marina

and head to the DQ or A&W for a rootbeer float and mini-golf. Sometimes if we were lucky, we’d all go to the Big Slide and ride down in the gunnysacks! Of course, no summer trip to Nisswa was complete without a visit to the Paul Bunyan Center where Paul would say your name and wave at you. We always hoped for a few rainy days so we could head into town and get a grab bag at the Totem Pole or a new pair of Minnetonka moccasins at Zaiser’s during Crazy Days. Then we’d pick up a Mary Etta’s pie for dessert and head back home to the lake for Bar Harbor’s happy hour and the soup of the day; if we were lucky, it was beer cheese! We’d read the Ripley’s Believe It or Not napkins, fill up on popcorn and play the pull-tabs before riding into Big Gull and swimming at Party Cove. In the late ‘80s, my parents sold their cabin, but we still traveled to Nisswa each year to stay with our cousins or at Point Narrows resort. Soon, my siblings and cousins began having kids of their own and in the late ‘90s, the fourth generation began to

discover the joys of a Nisswa summer! My niece got to experience first hand the delight of three generations of family members simultaneously shouting at you the proper skiing form from the pontoon boat while you freeze in Lake Margaret begging them to just “hit it!” After a day on the lake, we’d head into the Chocolate Ox for happy hour and stop by the Pickle Factory to get the new shirt for the summer. We have a quilt with Pickle Factory shirts! At the end of the summer, as we’d begin the trip back to Illinois, we always stop by the mini-donut stand to get a few more cinnamon sugar treats before the long ride home. In the mid-2010s my cousin purchased a cabin on Booming Out Bay on Big Gull and the fifth generation will get to experience the beauty, wonder and unbridled happiness that is Nisswa, Minnesota! Six kids, 23 grandkids and five generations later, we are so grateful to my grandparents for deciding that Missouri would likely be just too hot, and Nisswa, Minnesota, sounded like a much better place to fish.

A handful of shops close for the winter and reopen in the spring. CHOOSE NISSWA FOR A PLACE TO STAY Perhaps you want to try one of the local hotels. Some of the finest hotels in the Midwest are right here in the Brain-

erd lakes area, offering indoor and outdoor swimming pools and water parks. Or skip the pool and go jump in the lake - area lakes are pristine and well taken

care of so enjoy them whether you’re swimming, boating, fishing or just hanging out. The Brainerd lakes area has amazing attractions for all ages. Many of the lodging properties offer organized kids activities, with kids clubs and/or daycare options to give you a break for some alone time. Whether a large resort or a small one, a hotel or a bed and breakfast, there’s something for everyone at any age. As an added benefit, most lodging properties are open year-round. Of course, summer is the busiest season, but spring is beautiful when the ice comes off the lake and the wildlife returns. Fall is breathtakingly gorgeous with the changing of the leaves and crisp air; winter is remarkable with snowmobiling, skiing and ice fishing; and spring is a great time to watch the ice go off the lakes and fish again on open water. An added bonus is that fishing in the lakes area is great all year long.

GOLF

NISSWA AREA GOLF COURSES EXPAND

T

he Brainerd Lakes Area offers some of the top golf courses in the country. And some of the courses had expansions and redesigns over the past year. Here is an update on some of the course changes. The Pines course has a new look The 27-hole golf course that opened in the early 1990s recently went through a renovation project that started in the fall of 2022. “It’s been about 30 years since The Pines opened,” said Adam Haugen, director of golf at Grand View Lodge. “Courses get tired and greens get expanded as they are mowed and organic material gets on there. The idea was to touch it up and give the course a little bit of a face lift. We want to give the course better material to introduce to the golf course. The main focus was also the playability and maintainability of the golf course to help the growth of the golf course and freshen things up.” The Pines has three 9-hole courses: The Lakes, The Woods and The Marsh. In 2023, The Lakes and The Woods courses were finished with bunker 60 | Nisswa Chamber Guide 2024

transformations. Some bunkers were removed while others were improved and newly added. Ohio white sand will be brought in and used on the bunkers with playability, drainage and overall surfaces on the courses improved. The Pines also emphasized tree removal to make the course a little more open. “We know we are a resort facility and get a lot of players who are higher handicaps,” Haugen said. “We are trying to make the course a little more playable for them. We got rid of a lot of trees on the outskirts to make it a little more

THE

playable. We didn’t want to make it too easy because we have a lot of good players in the area as well. We wanted to get it challenging, so we moved some bunkers a little strategically to make people think about their shot a little more. We wanted to bring some shot value and strategic thinking well, keeping it easy for resort play.” The Marsh added new bunkers, like the other two courses, and the tee boxes, greens and cart paths touched up. That project was expected to be completed in the spring of 2024.

Cragun’s opens Lehman 18-hole course Completion of 36 new and redesigned holes at Cragun’s Legacy Courses were finished in 2023, including the opening of the new Tom Lehman 18-hole course. Lehman and Chris Brands partnered to build and redesign all 36 holes on Cragun’s property. Construction isn’t done yet, however, as nine more holes will be finished in the summer of 2024 giving Cragun’s 45 championship quality holes. “It’s a 36-hole renovation and then adding nine more new ones,” Lehman said. “It really became something a little more different because we eliminated some holes and had to create new holes and reversed some holes. We probably renovated 31 holes and built 14 new

holes. It was a big project lasting three years. You are obviously limited here in Minnesota with the weather, but beautiful typography and a beautiful sand base that was easy to work with.” The Lehman 18 course stretches all the way to the Gull River and back to the clubhouse. “The Lehman 18 is a combination of some of the existing holes that were renovated or changed combined with some brand new holes,” Lehman said. “The brand new holes were built on sand dunes and I’ve always loved courses in Australia that are sand built and we all know what that look is with the big reveal. It’s a little bit of a different kind of sand here, but the look is kind of what we wanted to achieve.”

Lehman first saw Cragun’s Legacy Courses when he was watching his son play in the Minnesota PGA Junior Match Play event in the summer of 2020. He met with Dutch Cragun on the patio of the clubhouse and was interested in helping the new project of expanding the Legacy Courses. Three summers later and it’s nearly complete. Lehman started designing golf courses in 1997 a year after he won The 1996 Open Championship at the Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club. His first project was The Gallery Golf Club in Marana, Arizona. Shortly after he designed Troy Burne Golf Club in Hudson, Wisconsin. Overall, Lehman estimated he had been a part of 30 golf course designs.

CITIZENS OF THE YEAR

NISSWA HONORS ITS STELLAR CITIZENS

N

isswa likes to recognize its citizens who go above and beyond to make the area a better place to live, work and play. To that end, every year the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce honors a Nisswa Citizen of the Year. In 2023, that award-winner was Shawn Hansen. Hansen is no stranger to the Nisswa Citizen of the Year program. As Nisswa Chamber of Commerce president from 2012-2019, she spearheaded the search each year for an outstanding citizen, as well as a way to surprise the recipient with the award. She’s also nominated several past winners after stepping away from her chamber role. The tables turned when Hansen found herself on the receiving end of the award in front of more than 100 women at the Gather on 3 Event Center-The Woods in rural Brainerd. Interrupting Hansen, who was speaking at a quarterly meeting of the 100+ Women Who Care Brainerd Lakes, Kalie Jay, Nisswa Chamber executive assistant, announced to the group: “We’re all in the presence of the 2023 Nisswa Citizen of the Year.” Hugs and a standing ovation ensued while a tearing up Hansen asked, “Is it me?” Hansen was honored at the Nisswa Chamber’s annual Membership Dinner & Citizen of the Year Celebration. Hansen recalled Marv Koep, a wellknown area fishing guide, saying the best honor he’d ever received was being named the Nisswa Citizen of the Year and how that’s what she remembers every time she sees him. It was baffling considering all the accolades he’s received, she said. “There’s such amazing people on that list,” she said of past winners. Reflecting on receiving the honor herself, she said: “Dad said, ‘You have to have a purpose in life and never lose sight of the purpose.’” Her family didn’t have a lot of money, but her parents gave their time to endeavors. “Dad said, ‘You can always give your time no matter what life brings,’” Hansen said. Her list of endeavors includes being the executive director of The Outreach Program of Brainerd Lakes, a food aid organization based in Nisswa, since 2019; an active Nisswa Lions Club member, including chair for the 2025 District Convention for 65 clubs; co-founder of 64 | Nisswa Chamber Guide 2024

the 100+ Women Who Care Brainerd Lakes, which raises money for nonprofits; and past Nisswa Chamber president. Over the last 24 years that she's lived in Lake Shore with her husband, Terry, and where they raised their two children, she’s been with the Nisswa Women of Today, Lutheran Church of the Cross Children’s Ministry Team, Nisswa Elementary School PTA president and vice president, Nisswa Parks and Recreation softball coach, Nisswa Historical Society board member, Kids Against Hunger Brainerd Lakes Area board chair, and Lake Shore election judge and planning commission alternate. “I watch brilliant people who do good and surround myself with those people,” Hansen said. “You have to surround yourself with like-minded people who believe in the same philosophies you do. “I always believed God has a purpose for me to give my time,” she said. In a nomination letter, Sarah Smith, Confidence Learning Center event and marketing director, said of Hansen’s involvement in the community: “These roles have never been just a title to Shawn - she goes above and beyond in everything she does, with TRUE passion for Nisswa and the surrounding areas.” Smith praised the Women Who Care group. “She does this with a passion to simply ‘give back’ to those in the community that need it. She does everything selflessly; always wanting to leave this world better each and every day,” Smith wrote. Lee Seipp, of Nisswa, also nominated Hansen. “Shawn loves Nisswa and she loves people,” Seipp wrote. “She is a connector, a builder, a collaborator and an all around good person who has made a huge difference in our community for years.” Seipp said Hansen is inspiring in her enthusiasm for being inclusive of others in working together with them to make the community better. “She is thoughtful, focused, determined, broad-thinking and passionate in many of the ways she has demonstrated her stewardship and service for the betterment of the Nisswa community and how our community has influenced the region and beyond,” she said. Hansen is committed to this community, and dedicated to a life of purposefully giving of her time to make a difference in people’s lives, Seipp wrote.

NISSWA FOUNDATION

THE NISSWA PRETTY GOOD FOUNDATION

I

n 2023, the Nisswa Community Fund joined the Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation family of funds. “We are thrilled that local leaders formed the Nisswa Pretty Good Foundation, as it will be known locally,” Karl Samp, Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation executive director, said. “They had the foresight to create this fund to enhance a pretty good small town. And we all know here, that means the (recently named) Best Small Town in Minnesota! Donations are now being accepted to grow the fund and its impact in Nisswa.” Pam Dorion, president of the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce, said: “I am beyond excited to get the Nisswa Pretty Good Foundation up and running. I can’t wait to assemble the last few committee members and see where this goes. Everyone here loves this town and everyone that comes through wants to come again. … I see big things happening with this going forward and I can’t wait. I love Nisswa!” “Nisswa is an amazing community, and this will be instrumental in the community’s future success,” Jenny Max, Nisswa city administrator, said. “A big thank you goes to the Nisswa Chamber for their vision; I can’t wait to be a part of this initiative that will provide opportunities for anyone who loves Nisswa to come together and do great things!” Dorion is the chair of the Nisswa Pretty Good Foundation and Max will serve on the committee as well. “Once additional committee members are finalized, the committee will accelerate fundraising efforts to give the fund a jump-start,” Dorion said. “This could be a real game changer and provide a source to fund immediate and future needs of the community.” The committee is asking anyone who is interested in donating to do so online at bit.ly/3CkAcGS or mail it to CommunityGiving at 101 Seventh Ave. S, No. 100, St. Cloud, MN, 56301. Donors should note “Nisswa Community Fund” in the memo line. The Fund Committee would welcome any donations or matching grant dollars to help increase fund growth and requests people contact Dorion if interested in providing a matching grant challenge or donation. The Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation attracts and administers charitable funds for the benefit of the local Brainerd area. Since 1998, the 72 | Nisswa Chamber Guide 2024

EDUCATION

N

isswa is known for many things - lakes, woods, shopping, fun - but one of the best parts of our town is Nisswa Elementary School! Nisswa is truly a community school. They are supported by the Chamber, the Lions club, the American Legion, families of their students and alumni from their school. One extra-special group they have is their Parent-Teacher Organization, or PTO. Sure, most schools have them, but we’re certain none are quite like Nisswa’s. To quote Nisswa Elementary School Principal Molly Raske, they make so many “only in Nisswa” dreams come true.

76 | Nisswa Chamber Guide 2024

The group of parents and teachers that make up the PTO are simply amazing. The list of things they do for the students and teachers at Nisswa Elementary School is endless, but here is a sampling. The PTO provides: All of the funding for field trips and transportation for those field trips. Food and fun at the annual Back to School Picnic. Welcome back gifts for staff. Food for the staff during parent-teacher conferences. Funds for special projects like the Warrior Recess Circuit equipment. The Halloween Spooktackular event for the whole family each year. Scholastic Book Fairs twice a year, where all the proceeds go toward giving one book to every student to take home and additional books for the Book Incentive Vending Machine. A Run-a-Thon to support all of the “Only in Nisswa” experiences and resources each year. Funds for students to go to Copper Creek for Fall Fun each year. Funds for students to go mini golfing at Nisswa Falls Mini Golf. Support for artists in residence throughout the year. Caps and gowns for the kindergarten and fourth grade graduations, and all the graduation treats. Support for the Nisswa Community Children’s Library. Event volunteers and all of the event decorating. And the PTO plans the BIGGEST and BEST event of the year, The Bloom! It is an amazing evening out to fundraise for the PTO and it is always over the top AMAZING! This just starts to put a dent in all the things the PTO does, but Nisswa Elementary School is so lucky to have them, and our community is so lucky to have Nisswa Elementary School in it!
