This year marks the 60th anniversary of the world-famous Nisswa Turtle Races. For over half of a century, we have entertained thousands of young (and young at heart) people on Wednesday afternoons during the summer months with all of our fun turtle activities.

The Nisswa Chamber of Commerce hosts several events during the year starting in January and running throughout the whole year. You can see a list of our events on the calendar pages that follow.

Mark and Kay Ulm purchased Zaiser’s Gift Shop in Nisswa in 1989.

In 1990, Crazy Cowboy Bob came to Zaiser’s to help sell footwear on the street during Nisswa’s Crazy Days.

Some people have said that he had an uncanny resemblance to Mark and others even speculated that they might be twins.

Everyone seemed to agree though that they have completely different personalities.

During the first years that Cowboy Bob was hawking shoes and sandals for the two days of Crazy Days, some of Zaiser's customers were a bit taken aback by his bombastic nature.

He was talking continuously on a microphone, telling people why they should buy this or that shoe and yelling out the prices to them because nothing was marked at the discounted amount.

With each new year, the crowds in Nisswa got larger, the sales tables of bargains got bigger and the lines to the registers got longer.

Crazy Cowboy Bob has become a mainstay of Crazy Days In Nisswa. It is a “must see” event that folks will literally plan their vacation around.

The entire town turns into a bargain lover’s paradise. •

isswa is lucky to have the Paul Bunyan Trail run right through the middle of town.

At the Nisswa Chamber we often get asked, “Should I go north or south from Nisswa?”

I have biked, rollerbladed, snowmobiled and ran this trail many times, but I must admit it had been awhile. I got some friends together and went to Up North Bike Rental in Nisswa and we rented e-bikes.

We left around 10:30 a.m. on a Saturday and we went 10 miles north.

This direction of the trail offers some variance in elevation. Most of the trail is located next to Highway 371 but still offers a great view of many lakes.

As we passed through Pequot Lakes we decided to stop for coffee and breakfast at MN Traders Co. When we finished up there, we had a few miles left to go to get to our 10-mile goal and we found another stop at Snarky Loon Brewery in Jenkins!

We then rode back to Nisswa and headed south from downtown.

This stretch of the trail is very flat and quiet. In this 10-mile stretch, we saw some lake view locations and it was a much more wooded and quieter ride than the northbound trip.

No matter if you are looking for serenity or the ability to stop and enjoy some food and beverage, the Paul Bunyan Trail does not disappoint! •

PAUL BUNYAN TRAIL – NORTH OR SOUTH FROM NISSWA

Nisswa welcomed a new event to the area in February of 2022, and boy are we glad we did!

We hosted the COR PowerSports Cross Country Snowmobile Racing Series just outside of downtown Nisswa. The course was approximately 30 miles long and was a mixture of trails, woods and ditches. The race started and ended on County Road 29 just a few miles outside of downtown Nisswa.

The event came about when Ross Krautkremer and Justin Olson, who races the series, were talking about bringing

a snowmobile race to Nisswa. They brought the idea to us at the Chamber and we jumped on it - why not?!

The race brought over 100 racers and their families to Nisswa, many for the first time - but definitely not the last!

Racers battled tough track conditions due to a large snowfall just days before the race that made things interesting.

On day one, Zach Herfindahl bested his fellow competitors and won the Pro Open Class. On day two, Dan Revering dominated the Pro Stock class and earned himself his first win!

Overall it was a great weekend of racing.

The COR PowerSports Racing Series has many venues throughout the season. One venue stood out to them. That venue - you guessed it - was right here in Nisswa!

The Nisswa 100 won COR PowerSports Cross Country Snowmobile Racing Series Venue of the Year!

We are so proud of this event and couldn’t have done it without our main sponsor, Northland Sports Center.

The 2023 Nisswa 100 event will be much larger. More to see and more to do! You won’t want to miss it! See you there! •

Sixty years later and generations of families are still celebrating and gathering around the Nisswa Turtle Track.

We love to hear the stories of visitors and locals’ stories from the past.

If you haven’t been to the Nisswa Turtle Races, you really need to put it on your Nisswa Bucket List. The main stars are the turtles, but not far behind is our turtle meister - Mark Ulm.

He has been the emcee of this event for as long as I can remember … I am not sure he even knows.

The crowds love his preshow and always enjoy the mini donuts he picks up from the Mini Donut stand on his way over to the track.

TURTLE RACES

This event is put on in conjunction with a local non-profit - The Mounted Eagles. They are our turtle wranglers and keep the turtles well cared for during the race season.

The funds raised from turtle races are shared with them so they can support their mission, which is to enhance the lives of the program participants, volunteers and the community through equine assisted activities.

They have been providing therapeutic horsemanship to persons with disabilities since 1992.

It is needless to say that we enjoy filling the town with smiling faces every Wednesday from the beginning of June to the middle of August.

How were the Turtle Races brought to Nisswa?

Rumor has it that a gentleman went on vacation and saw them happening there. He came back and brought up the idea to the local business people.

They said, ”It will never work …”

Well, that was 60 years ago and although there have been some upgrades, it is still something that brings people to town, makes generations of memories and will continue to delight people of all ages. •

ALMOST WASN’T

The multi-competition race facility known at Brainerd International Raceway almost didn’t come to the lakes area.

That’s because the original owner, George Montgomery, was going to build a speedway in the southeastern Minnesota community of Cannon Falls. Montgomery, an airline pilot and retired road racer, figured it would be an ideal location to draw fans from the Twin Cities, Rochester and Iowa. But he wasn’t able to find enough land to construct a large facility.

So he turned his focus to the Brainerd lakes area. And that’s where he was able to purchase enough acres of land that had been owned by a farmer, the paper mill and owner of a small nearby shopping center. Montgomery’s dream became true with the construction of BIR in 1968, which was initially called Donneybrooke Speedway. A three-mile race track was carved through a wooded area on the south side of North Long Lake.

Montgomery, a frequent summer visitor in the lakes area, also chose Brainerd because of the attraction of building a track surrounded by resorts. But that idea would backfire.

Not long after the track opened, problems began to surface between the community and rowdy race fans camping outside the facility along Highway 371. Many of the race fans spent time in

downtown Nisswa, especially during the night hours. Some nearby residents and tourists were also upset with the noise of the race cars at Donnybrooke.

Many people did come to Brainerd for racing as 22,000 fans attended the track’s first major event, featuring Can-Am cars. A big crowd also attended Donnybrooke’s first Trans-Am event, featuring Parnelli Jones and Mark Donohue, in 1970.

But Montgomery said the crowds were not enough for financial success, especially during the lean years of road racing in the early 1970s. Montgomery filed for bankruptcy in 1972 and the track hosted private events in 1973.

The track’s future was in jeopardy until later that year when Jerry Hansen and Dick Roe purchased the track and changed the name to BIR. They obtained a permit to allow camping inside, and upgraded sanitary facilities, hired professional security and expanded grandstand seating.

Hansen and Roe also worked to mend the relationship between the track and the community.

One of the biggest battles came in the early 1980s when the noise levels at BIR were challenged by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. The issue died when the state legislature exempted all motor racing facilities built before July 1, 1983, from MPCA noise standards.

BIR would quickly gain a reputation as a world-class motorsports facility, attracting some of the most popular racing circuits and the biggest names in drag racing, road racing and, eventually, snocross. The facility attracted road racing legends like Bobby and Al Unser and Tom Sneva, along with NASCAR drivers Kenny Schrader, Jimmy Spencer and Dick Trickle.

The Uncola Nationals lured actor/road racer Paul Newman to BIR in 1975 while the Pepsi Trans-Am Series later that year brought additional professional racers to Brainerd. Newman earned his first professional win in 1982 at BIR.

As for the drag races, the Crown Auto Funny Car event continued to grow through the 1970s. The National Hot Rod Association brought its regional points race to BIR’s mile-long straightaway that still doubles as a drag strip today. In 1977, BIR made a significant investment in drag racing by hosting the Crown Auto Funny Car Championship and the Crown Auto Winston Points Championship.

In the first Funny Car Championship, Don “The Snake” Prudhomme took home the championship but was defeated the following year by Tom Hoover. By the third year, the event attracted 22,000 fans. More than 50,000 fans attended the inaugural NorthStar Nationals in 1982 as they watched Shirley Muldowney win the Top Fuel Dragster finals and Mark Oswald set a world speed record of 256.41 mph in his Top Fuel Dragster.

The NorthStar Nationals eventually became the NHRA Nationals, the largest

annual sports events in the Upper Midwest. Attracting over 100,000 people for the weekend, BIR is a favorite stop for the race teams, the NHRA and fans alike mainly because it’s the only track on the circuit with on-site camping.

More than $100,000 in facility improvements were made in the early 1980s, including purchasing grandstand sections from the old Met Stadium in Bloomington. The extra bleachers were needed as BIR attracted an NHRA national race, which quickly became the track’s cornerstone event.

The first NorthStar Nationals, featuring Don Garlits and Shirley Muldowney, attracted more than 40,000 spectators, which was a Minnesota motorsports record crowd. In 1982, superbikes came to BIR at the Honda Classic Camel Pro Series. Three-time 500cc world champion Wayne Rainey won the superbike final that year.

Public stock was eventually sold at BIR, and a $250,000 structure with executive offices and corporate suites was built in 1987. The 1990s brought more milestones on the track and more facility changes at BIR.

BIR has come a long way since its modest beginnings in 1968. There have been changes in ownership, racing events and facility upgrades. Its colorful history and world-class racing has helped put Brainerd on the map, and continues to do so annually. •

NISSWA’S NEWEST RESORT HAS A DISTINCT FOCUS ON NATURE AND WEDDINGS

Nisswa’s newest resort and event center opened in 2022 on historical property on Clark Lake with a goal of connecting guests to the resort’s natural surroundings.

Nature Link Resort and Catalyst by Nature Link continue to take shape where the former Minnesota Hockey Camps were located for more than 40 years. Before that, the property was home to Minnewawa Lodge, one of the state’s oldest resorts.

Ben and Zoie Vanden Wymelenberg and Tony and Kate Becker are business partners in the venture. The Vanden Wymelenbergs operate the resort, and the Beckers are in charge of the event center and wedding venue.

The main lodge, housing Catalyst by Nature Link, features floor-to-ceiling windows, an expansive lake view and outdoor patio space.

The resort currently can sleep up to 40 people between various size cabins and hotel rooms for a total of 12 units in what Ben Vanden Wymelenberg calls a “clean Scandinavian design” that veers from the lakes area’s traditional up north theme.

The cabins feature full-sized kitchens and sleek marble and metal finishes in neutral shades of black and white. Wooden accent pieces give the structures an outdoorsy, northwoods feel.

While the resort has high speed internet, televisions aren’t being installed in the cabins. This is so their guests focus on the people around them by sharing a meal, engaging in conversation, or

playing board games, instead of simply turning on the TV by habit.

Resort expansion will continue over the next few years, including plans to add additional multi-unit hotels in the future.

Most of the cabins that opened in phase one of the build out were remodels of existing structures on the property.

Remodeling and rebuilding efforts are ongoing as the Nature Link team seeks to hold on to the unique history that the property holds from Minnewawa Lodge.

The ultimate goal is to offer enough lodging to accommodate a full 225-person event group to be able to stay on-site.

“We’re excited to restore the property

48 2023 Nisswa Destination Guide www.nisswa.com
LODGING

back to its original intent as a resort,” said Olivia Goskey, venue operations manager at Nature Link.

The resort is near the Paul Bunyan Trail and offers complimentary bikes, kayaks, canoes and standup paddleboards for guests, Coming soon will be outdoor reading nooks, a sauna, and walking trails through the 14-acre wooded property.

Catalyst by Nature Link, the on-site event center, can host up to 225 people and is meant to have a modern look and feel that blends in among the lake and the resort’s other natural elements.

The event center offers private getting ready suites for wedding groups complete with kitchenettes, lounges, makeup mirrors, storage cubbies and more. Arcade games and lawn games on the lakeside patio will help wedding participants de-stress before the event.

A grand staircase stretches from the lobby to an upstairs area, which boasts two-story floor-to-ceiling views of the patio and lakefront. The second floor also includes an indoor ceremony room where couples can get married in full view of Clark Lake.

There is an outdoor ceremony space featuring benches set back in a clearing among towering pine trees. Three different archway options are included

for couples getting married to choose from. The outdoor ceremony site allows them to feel like they’re one with nature on their big day.

“We’re trying to keep as many trees as possible because we don’t want to cut them down,” Goskey said, noting the event space was moved over a few feet from the original blueprint so that two of the biggest trees on the property could be spared.

The event center’s lakeside patio is the perfect spot for a social hour and the first floor reception room is ideal for dinner and dancing.

A vendor room is available for photographers, coordinators or any other event vendors who need a place to set up or store equipment on the day of. A separate catering entrance allows for

easily accessible food prep and service. The central bar has three different service windows, allowing guests to get drinks from the lobby, patio and reception rooms.

Retreats and galas are already booked for the space. Goskey cited holiday parties, conferences, business meetings and other types of events being held there as well.

“We’d love to be able to work with different businesses in the area and host some community events,” Goskey said.

The resort’s mission is to impact the world by relentlessly delivering excellent service and helping people reconnect to themselves, nature and the people around them.

The Nature Link co-founders said: “Our lives have become so reliant on a constant connection with technology. Notifications, screen time and social media consume our attention as if we are living our lives through a device as opposed to living in the present. We want to offer an experience of disconnecting so that our guests can reconnect with the things that matter most.”

Nature Link Resort is nestled back among a forest of pine trees on Clark Lake, only minutes from downtown Nisswa and nearby amenities. •

INAUGURAL TOURNAMENT EXCEEDS PLAYERS’ EXPECTATIONS

The players were torn.

On one hand, the goal for the PGA Tour Canada players is to get off that tour and advance to the Korn Ferry Tour, the next step to making the PGA Tour.

On the other hand, many of them said they wouldn’t mind having to come back to Cragun’s Legacy Courses for another shot at winning the CRMC Championship.

The praise was plentiful concerning the course conditions for the August 2022 tournament at the Legacy. Cragun’s golf course superintendent Matt McKinnon and his staff had the Legacy greens “rolling like pool tables” was how many of the players described it.

For an inaugural event, the tournament, the course and the volunteers exceeded the players’ expectations.

Scott Stevens was one of those players vying for a spot on the Korn Ferry Tour. He was fifth in the Fortinet Cup standings, which would advance him to the next level.

The Birmingham, Alabama, native called the course one of the best on the tour.

“As a whole, the golf course, the hospitality and how the tournament was run was honestly very impressive because this was the first year they had the tournament here,” Stevens said. “Everything was run really smoothly. The area is great to be in. I went fishing … so that was fun.

Stevens said he came into the tournament with no expectations. He expected there to be issues for a firsttime tournament, but didn’t experience

anything negative.

“All the volunteers were great,” Stevens said. “The fans came out. Every day on 18 there were a bunch of people around the green. That makes it a lot of fun for us because usually not a ton of people. Didn’t really have any expectations coming in and if I did they would have been exceeded.”

Stevens had to keep reminding himself he was back on U.S. soil. The CRMC was the first PGA Tour Canada event to be played in America.

Californian Jake Knapp was the tournament winner with a 26-under-par score. Knapp was very pleased with the Paul Bunyan Ax trophy awarded to the winner.

“I think anytime it’s a first-time event you wonder and you also worry about the support it’s going to get,” Knapp said. “You’re not sure how many people know about it or how big the country club is. You’re never really sure going in. Nobody has really been here before. Everyone was just like we’ll see what happens when we get there. When we got here and played the back nine I knew it was going to be a great test. It was really fast and firm to start out with and it was kind of a bummer we got so much rain because it changed the course, but it took a low number to win.”

Knapp moved from ninth to second in the Fortinet Cup standings with the win and collected $36,000 of the $200,000 prize money.

More important to the lakes area, The CRMC Foundation, which was the fundraising entity for the tournament, received a $50,000 donation. Just as important was the way the Cragun’s Legacy Courses staff and its volunteers showcased Brainerd lakes area golf. •

What does it take to be the Nisswa Citizen of the Year in Nisswa?

More than you think!

You have to live and breathe Nisswa. Both of those sum up Tina Foster.

If you have ever been to the area, you have probably met her. She sure was surprised at our annual membership dinner when she thought that her friend was receiving this honor.

She had spent the better part of a year in Mexico helping her family get a project off the ground there. We missed seeing her around town, but she was always still present.

She remained on many boards and still traveled back to be part of all the events in Nisswa.

So, when it was time to announce the receiver of last year's Citizen of the Year honor, she had her eyes on who she thought the winner was.

When

was announced that we were glad that she traveled back from Mexico to receive this honor, she was overwhelmingly surprised.

There were many people involved in the surprise and it was amazing we pulled it off! She almost didn’t make it back in time!

This honor is voted on by 3 past honorees and 2 Nisswa Chamber board members.

There are many great people nominated each year and the process is not always easy, but this year's rising star is Tina Foster and Nisswa wouldn’t be the same without her.

Her favorite part so far? Riding on top of the fire truck in the Freedom Days Parade! •

QUAINT COFFEE SHOP GETS NEW OWNERS

What started as one small coffee shop in Nisswa Square more than 20 years ago grew to two more locations, a roastery and a bakery.

Yet the downtown location remains a quaint and popular place for friends to meet or to grab a quick cup of coffee while on the go. You’ll usually find the tables inside occupied, or the chairs on the outdoor patio during nice weather as friends leisurely reminisce and sip something delicious.

In spring 2022, new owners took over Stonehouse Coffee and Roastery, famously known for fresh roasted coffee and fresh baked scones.

Brittany Ohman and her parents, Jay and Nancy Kinkel, bought the business from founders Mike and Julie French. They remain excited to continue building on the business’ longtime success.

It was always Ohman’s dream to own her own coffee shop.

“Instead of just starting from scratch, why not take over an established business?” Ohman said. “I worked under the previous owners for years and was able to learn so much about coffee from them and how they built this business. I look forward to adding to what they have started.”

She started as a roaster at Stonehouse in 2018 and eventually became the manager.

She previously managed a coffee shop in Fargo, North Dakota, where she gained experience in business management and marketing. She fell in love with coffee in 2012, when she worked at a coffee shop while attending college in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

When

took over Stonehouse with her family, the business had grown from just its Nisswa Square location to a spot in the RiverWood Bank building in Baxter and another in the American National Bank building off County Road 13 in Nisswa.

Ohman is happy to carry on the tradition while working with her family.

Ohman grew up in Park Rapids with her parents and two sisters, who are also involved in the business. The family keeps growing too, with Ohman’s son born just weeks before her family took over and her sister’s son born a short time later.

“We have two little boys who will be growing up here at Stonehouse,” Ohman said with a smile.

Ohman plans to upgrade the business in the years to come with changes already being made, like creating a more user friendly website and engaging more in community events.

Gluten-free macarons were the first addition of what Ohman hopes to be more to come. She also hopes to do community outreach and partner with other businesses to offer evening events.

“We’ll see what the future holds,” Ohman said. “But I’m always evolving and changing and creating new things.” •

‘ONLY IN NISSWA’ - NISSWA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OFFERS UNIQUE EXPERIENCES

Nisswa Elementary School is a pre-kindergarten through fourth grade school in the heart of Nisswa. The elementary school is part of the Brainerd School District.

But unlike many of the district’s other five elementary schools, Nisswa School offers unique opportunities to all of its students because of its location.

One of those is the annual Bloom Auction and Fundraiser, scheduled April 1, 2023, an event that raises over 80% of the PTO’s funds for a school year.

Proceeds from this event help fund technology updates; classroom curriculum needs, including extra art and science education; agenda books; reading literacy tools; field trips; family fun nights; and much, much more.

The Bloom is an event for adults held at Grand View Lodge’s Gull Lake Center. Those who attend are treated to gourmet food and cocktails and are entertained by games, drawings, a large silent auction and a live auction.

Students participate as well, but before the grand event is held. Students in each grade create artworks and themed gift baskets that are raffled at the event. These baskets have always been wildly popular.

The Bloom Auction and Fundraiser started 18 years ago when funding was being cut. In response, the Nisswa School PTO sponsored the auction to continue to fund art instruction for Nisswa students.

Originally a way to fund exposure to the arts, the event grew from there.

“At that event we are reminded of how much our community and families support our little school to ensure that we are able to provide so many ‘Only in Nisswa’ experiences throughout the year,” Principal Molly Raske said.

Other “Only in Nisswa” experiences for elementary students include:

Kindergartners get to ride a Nisswa fire truck during Fire Prevention Week in October. Firefighters visit the school to demonstrate spraying the school with fire hoses, share a fire safety presentation dressed in full gear and then kindergartners ride back to the fire hall in fire trucks.

Fourth graders get a lesson in patriotism during a flag disposal ceremony at the Nisswa American Legion in the fall. Legion members march with students a halfmile from the school to the Legion to then show them the proper way to retire a flag and fold a flag.

All students and staff, including the principal, dress up in their Halloween costumes and walk from the school through downtown Nisswa as they go trick-or-treating at downtown businesses.

All students help launch the Nisswa Turtle Race season in May with a day of racing. The Nisswa A&W donates root beer floats for every student to kick off the event and then every student races a turtle. •

CHRISTMAS

TOUR HELPS FOOD SHELF PATRONS

Have fun, gain holiday decorating ideas and benefit the Lakes Area Food Shelf in Pequot Lakes all at the same time.

The food shelf will again benefit from the 32nd annual Nisswa Christmas Home Tour, which will take place Oct. 19-21, 2023.

Tour participants pay $40 - with all proceeds benefiting the food shelf - and are shuttled to private homes elaborately decorated for the holidays.

Participants then have the opportunity to shop or grab a bite to eat in downtown Nisswa.

The food shelf uses proceeds to meet growing needs in the Brainerd lakes area.

Nisswa shops donate their time and expertise to decorate the tour homes. Last year’s participants included Anchored In, Buffalo Plaid, Chocolate Ox, Double T Acres, Found: A Curated Life, Lark and Olde Crow Gatherings.

The Lakes Area Food Shelf projected it would serve as many as 10,000 people in 2022 - despite limiting individuals to two visits per month - as government pandemic

relief programs expired and inflation raised costs.

“The combination of our buying power with the help from area grocers will maximize the impact of every dollar from every ticket sold,” said Kathy Adams, Lakes Area Food Shelf director. “The Christmas Home Tour is our biggest annual appeal. With the continued growth in the number of friends and neighbors using the food shelf, we’re really hoping to reach record sales.”

Tickets and more information are available at lafshometour.com. •
