Area women to hang wreaths on soldiers’ graves BY DAN DETERMAN Staff Writer
During the holiday season, there is a long-standing tradition of national veteran cemeteries hanging wreaths on each and every gravestone belonging to veterans. Cathy Malecha, who has often helped with that undertaking at Camp Ripley, has gathered three other area women — Carolyn Buss, Sharon Thurlow and Shirley Robideaux — to bring the same project to Pequot Lakes cemeteries. There is just one hang-up: They could use some funding and have been doing their best to get in touch with each veteran’s descendents — a difficult task when some graves belong to veterans dating back to the SpanishAmerican War. “We have been on the phone trying to find the descendents of these people so we can send them a letter and tell them what we are up to,” Malecha said. “Hopefully, they will respond and we can make this an annual event.” The wreaths will come from a nursery in Bemidji, which is also responsible for providing Camp Ripley with its wreaths. The nursery has

very small token.” In addition to seeking donations over the phone, the group has placed a number of donation boxes in area businesses, including MidMinnesota Federal Credit Union. “Just because they are gone does not mean they should be forgotten by any means,” said Becka Magnan of Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union. “I think Veterans Day needs to be as big a holiday as Christmas, and needs to be recognized more in communities.” Malecha indicated that many veterans buried in Pequot Lakes cemeteries no longer have relatives in the area, and the group will accept donations from the public to remember those people as well. “Everybody has a brother, grandfather or husband buried during the wars,” Buss said. “They gave up something for us. Surely, this is the least we can do.” Those who have not been contacted regarding their loved ones in Pequot Lakes cemeteries are encouraged to call Cathy Malecha at 5684488 and leave a message if she does not answer.
Cost for lunch for two people and one gingerbread house is $55 when reserved by Nov. 24. Cost is $65 after Nov. 24. Contact Madden’s on Gull Lake at 218-829-2811 for more information.

Known throughout the world as a virtuoso on piano, George Winston will give a solo concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, in the Chalberg Theatre on the Brainerd campus of Central Lakes College (CLC). The show marks Winston’s third appearance as part of the CLC Theatre’s Cultural Arts Series. “Every song I’ve ever heard, that has gone in and stayed in me, has always reminded me of a season. A picture and a place, maybe, but always a season,” Winston is quoted as saying. As a youth, Winston’s interest in music was listening to instrumentals in the various R & B and jazz genres, especially as played by organists. After hearing The Doors in 1967, he was inspired to start playing the organ. In 1971, he switched to solo piano after hearing the music of such greats as “Fats” Waller Teddy Wilson, and Earl Hines. Many of Winston’s compositions are self-described as “rural folk piano” or “folk piano”, a style he developed as a complement to the up-tempo stride piano. The third style he plays is New Orleans R&B piano, influenced by such greats as Professor Longhair, Dr. John and Jon Cleary. Winston’s early recordings include “Ballads and Blues” and the best-selling “Autumn.” His albums “December” and “Winter into Spring” both went platinum (million-plus sales in the United States). He has recorded seven more solo

piano albums, and he is one of the best known performers playing contemporary instrumental music. Winston also is known for his two tribute albums to jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi, composer for the first sixteen “Peanuts” animated films. “Linus and Lucy – The Music of Vince Guaraldi” was released in 1996, and “Love Will Come – The Music of Vince Guaraldi, Volume 2” was released in February 2010. In addition to his piano work, Winston plays blues harmonica, solo acoustic guitar and Hawaiian slack-key guitar. Both his harmonica and guitar playing can be heard on his benefit album “Remembrance - A Memorial Benefit,” which
was released shortly after 9/11. In 2006, he recorded another benefit album, “Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions: A Hurricane Relief Benefit,” followed by “Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions 2: A Louisiana Wetlands Benefit” in 2012. His newest project is “Spring Carousel – A Cancer Research Benefit,” planned for release in 2015. George composed this collection of melodic solo piano songs while recovering from a bone marrow transplant at City of Hope in 2013. All proceeds go to benefit City of Hope and cancer research. Winston regularly tours across North America, Europe and Asia. He last appeared in Brainerd in 2010. Tickets for the George

Americans have a lot on their minds during the holiday season, and the stress of ballooning budgets and crowded calendars can be enough to affect almost anyone’s well-being. With that in mind, why not use the holidays as an opportunity to give the most important gift of all? That gift, of course, is health. always a sure bet. Healthy cookbooks and kitchenware will help them stick to their healthy habits, and you might even get a delicious meal in the bargain. Charitable Donations Donating to a health- promoting charity on another person’s behalf can be a great way to support his or her health-conscious cause. Giving Tuesday is December 2 – a nationwide event that marks the perfect time for such a gesture. If you’re looking for a unique way to give back, check out Action for Healthy Kids, an organization that works to make schools healthier places for kids to learn. In its online gift catalog, you’ll find a host of charitable options, scaled to fit almost any budget. From a physical activity classroom kit to school breakfast for a child for the entire year (students who eat school
breakfast score 17.5 percent higher on standardized math tests), Action for Healthy Kids provides an easy way to make an impact with healthy gifts. “Everyone is looking for the perfect gift for kids this time of year, and it’s hard to beat the gift of a healthier life,” said Rob Bisceglie CEO of Action for Healthy Kids. “It’s estimated that one-third of U.S. kids are overweight or obese. That’s a statistic that needs to change.” For more information, visit www.actionforhealthykids. org. Staying healthy and fit is important year-round, so don’t hesitate to give your friends and family holiday gifts that will help enrich their mind, body and soul. While other gifts might be used and discarded, yours will keep on giving.

In an annual parade, fisherman drag their little shanties down the main drag on the day after Thanksgiving. Fish houses are normal buildings in Minnesota, as seen in the film Grumpy Old Men. Other events include crafts,
food, and a visit with the Clauses. The parade is on Friday, Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. It’s held downtown Aitkin on Minnesota Ave. and Hwy. 169. The parade is a free community event.
Festive holiday parties are a winter staple. But how do you put a twist on the annual tradition? To add new flavor and excitement to your holiday gathering this year, consider incorporating a series of sweet surprises to delight your guests. The Perfect Pairing You’re probably familiar with the concept of pairing appetizers and entrées with the perfect wines, but you may not realize that it’s just as important for your sweet treats! If you’re serving a particularly sweet candy such as peanut brittle, pair it with a stout beer for the perfect complement. And if you’ve chosen a rich, indulgent chocolate for your guests, consider pairing with an equally bold Cabernet Sauvignon so the wine can stand up to the flavor of the chocolate. The Sweetest Buffet To show your guests you care, create a candy buffet and invite them to pick a selection of their favorite sweets. Not everyone has the same preferences, so be sure to offer a variety of treats including a selection of truffles, nuts and chews, and for the little ones, gourmet lollypops are always a hit! Always serve sweet treats made with high-quality ingredients. See’s Candies is one of the few remaining candy makers that ages its chocolate — a process that takes longer, but imparts a smooth, mellow flavor. See’s candies have no added preservatives and are also gluten free.
Offer your guests a sweet buffet, and some sweets for the road. STATEPOINT PHOTO
Sweets for the Road If you’re not sure your guests will save room for dessert, consider sending them home with a goodie bag to enjoy later. See’s Candies offers treats in a variety of sizes and price ranges, sure to fit within your budget and please each of your guests. You can find See’s Candies at holiday gift center locations in major malls nationwide or at www.Sees. com. With these simple twists, your guests are sure to have only “sweet” things to say!

Glynlyon, Nisswa Lions to sponsor Nisswa City of Lights fireworks Schaefer’s Foods in Nisswa will host the 17th annual Taste of the Holidays from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5. Participants will sample food and beverage items from every grocery department, including deli, produce, meat, dairy and bakery. Also, for every gallon of Schroeder Dairy milk purchased at Schaefer’s Foods in December, 50 cents will be donated to the Nisswa Lakes Area Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program. Horse and wagon rides, carolers, reindeer and Santa will adorn the streets of downtown Nisswa on Friday, Nov. 28, for the 33rd annual City of Lights Celebration. Activities will start at 2 p.m. and go throughout the day/evening. At 7:30 p.m., festival attendees merge toward the north end of Main Street for a fireworks display, put on by Zambelli Fireworks. After the fireworks, there will be live music at the Nisswa American Legion and the Pickle Factory. Shawn Hansen, CEO/president of the Nisswa Chamber, announced that for the second year, Glynlyon (a technology company located in Nisswa) and the Nisswa Lions Club (largest civic organization in Nisswa) will co-sponsor the fireworks. “The Nisswa Chamber would like to thank Glynlyon and the Nisswa Lions for the support for this event,” Hansen said. “We have lots of great sponsors that help us make the event free to attend. Our members’ generous support is what makes this festival such a success.” Hansen said this festival is her favorite. “Bonfires light the Paul Bunyan Trail, cider and doughnuts are served at Pioneer Village, storytelling is going on at the caboose,” she said, adding that locals, seasonal residents and visitors are co-mingled in the crowd and the event draws thousands to Nisswa on the day after Thanksgiving. “When the world is thinking about rushing out to shop the Black Friday deals, we are packaging up our beautiful community for a Hallmark movie scene. Nisswa is definitely the place to be to spend quality time with your family and friends.” For the third year, the chamber will conduct a button campaign that promotes shopping in Nisswa. Food and Wine Pairing Tips for the Holiday Season tannin balance of the wine and make it seem astringent and bitter. For example, many people think chocolates pair well with red wine however, they don’t, unless it is a port which has residual sugar. Sugar content, whether it comes from fruits like grapes or apples, or honey and chocolate, is simply not a good choice for Cabernet Sauvignon. To make a Cabernet Sauvignon taste more velvety, pair it to dishes high in acidity.. For example, adding a splash of lemon to a dish can smooth out a big and structured Cabernet Sauvignon. Some rules do not apply across the board. “Most people think red wine always goes with red meat, only to discover a dish like beef teriyaki, which contains sugar, can make a beautiful Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon seem undrinkable,” says Busquaert. Use salt liberally to bring out the full flavor in foods, without throwing off the flavors of your wine. One of the most important aspects of holiday entertaining is sometimes overlooked -- proper pairing of the food and wine. Even if you have a bottle of top quality wine and an amazing chef-inspired dish, without considering how the food and drink combine, you can ruin the taste of both, say experts. One commonly mismatched wine is Cabernet Sauvignon. “I have a simple goal with food and wine pairings: don’t mess with the taste of the wine,” says Dean Busquaert, a wine educator at Sequoia Grove Winery, a pioneering
