Successful urban planning is the result of thorough research and a cooperative and collaborative team of designers who work together towards a common goal for the betterment of the community. For the first twenty weeks of this year-long project, my team and I chose to focus our urban master plan on Passyunk Square, a local neighborhood in South Philadelphia that contains a rich source of ammenities and a robust urban fabric of singlefamily rowhouses. At its core, however is the site of a municipal services complex and a suburban-scale ACME Grocery store. These two blocks felt out of place, abandoned and in need of redevelopment.

The heart of urban design lies in the careful consideration of the public realm and creating a unifying language that not only respects the urban fabric, but further pushes the neighborhood to advance growth and create a stronger community. As the capstone to our fourth year urban design studio, I decided to choose the central structure adjacent to our new plaza and transform it into a monumental community center and productivityentertainment hub. Designed with a focus on core and shell, the massing, programming, and building envelope were carefully considered and developed. To create the essence of a robust workplace and cultural hub, the site contains spaces that reflect all-hours of the day including a multi-functional community center with assembly halls, a hybrid private office and co-working space and the revival of a historic tavern for musicians to perform at.

“Who learns will love and not destroy the creatures life the flowers joy” -Unknown, the Little Stone House For Henry Mercer, Fonthill was his playground of ideas; nature, the arts, education, industry, history, and residency.

When the Bucks County Historical Society aquired this piece of land after his passing, the Department of Parks and Recreation declared the park a historic landmark for the town of Doylestown. In this project, I sought to bring Mercer’s vision to life by creating a master plan that fulfills the needs of its current owners, while finishing the work Mercer had intended--”to create a romanticized fantasy of the old world through prospect and refuge.” 2

Henry Mercer was a very ecclectic man and a selfmade architect who took inspiration from his many travels and passions. As a man who advocated for the preservation of pre-industrial Americana, Mercer was fond architecture that was meticulously crafted and was fond the medieval archetypes of Europe. Looking to Mercer’s philsophy and the existing Fonthill Castle and Moravian Tiles works, I decided to further develop the new event space as a contemporary interpretation of a 15th century monastery with the main focus as a wedding venue. Situated close to Mercer’s home, the Fonthill Park Venue is perched atop a hill in the woodlands creating a broad view and acts as a gateway to the woodland trail system.

Located within the heart of Rwanda’s capital, Kigali was designated as the start of a mission to bring dental health to the people who were distraught from the aftermath of the Rwandan Genocide. In this competition, I sought to create a dental campus that acted as a place to bring solace and friendship between others and create something that felt genuine to the citizens of Rwanda.

The rowhome has become a staple of Philadelphia domestic architecture due to its simple form, compact footprint, and how they allowed families their own personal space in the city. However, with increased urbanism, immigration, and increased cost of living, the possibilities for multigenerational living has come to the forefront. In this project, I sought to create a rowhome that merged the classical portrayal of a row home with the contemporary issues that suites a multigenerational family.

Inspired by the words of Eric Klinenberg in his book “Palaces for the People,” schools play an important role in creating a local identity for the neighborhood. This “social infrastructure” would act as the gathering space for the community and a symbol of local pride. In this project, I sought to transform an existing K-5 school into a thriving community center and K-8 school with a curriculum that is enriched by its outdoor amenities. 1

In the rowing community, the Schuylkill River plays a monumental roles as the birthplace of competitive rowing in American. Located just along the east bank lies Boathouse Row, a collection of elite rowing club, private and collegiate. This project began with our client, Philadelphia City Rowing, a non-profit middle and high school rowing team that lacked a space where students could gather, store their boats, and have easy access to the river. In this project, I sought to design Philadelphia City Rowing a boathouse that not only satisfied their storage needs, but also acted as an afterschool group-study and healthy lifestyle space with viewing balconies for friends and family to cheer the students during a race.

LOTAN BASKETBALL Green Apprenticeship Neto-Zero Capstone
DECEMBER 2019 2 WK TRAVEL PATRICIA GALLAGHER 5 WK DESIGN KIBBUTZ LOTAN Located within the Arava desert, Kibbutz Lotan is a eco-village community that has a mission to be one with nature. During my two-week stay we were tasked at using our studies of permaculture, energy, water, and thermal design to redevelop a part of the community that is integral to the local culture. We were to turn it into something more robust and successful, all while making it a net-zero project.

Using vernacular construction methods and sustainable practices used at Lotan, my team sought to redevelop the existing basketball court into a more professional venue suitable for regional competitions. The court we proposed consisted of designing an open steel-frame covering with vegetation and photovoltaics, net-zero bathrooms with composting toilets and a graywater cistern. The bleachers were constructed with used tires packed with straw and covered in adobe.

Formed over 500 million years ago, Uluru is a large red sandstone plateau that rises from the center of the Australian landscape. Sacred to the local Anangu people, this site had become a popular tourist destination for hiking to which the Anangu fought to ban to preserve this site. 1 Located less than a mile away, in this project I sought to create a campus that would act as a way to protect the culture of the Anangu while still bringing joy to those who traveled to see Uluru. 2
