2016: Bradley Stoke’s annus horribilis

I

n keeping with the traditions of the season, I have been looking back at the stories we have carried in the Journal over the last 12 months and there are two topics that have dominated the headlines: roadworks and buses.

Without putting too blunt a point on it, living in Bradley Stoke during 2016 has been pretty miserable – unless, that is, you never needed to drive a motor vehicle or use public transport.

When Alun Griffiths Ltd commenced construction of the MetroBus route through Bradley Stoke, they pledged that it would be “all over by Christmas [2016]”. But thanks, we are told, to the discovery of numerous “uncharted” gas and water mains, the work has been delayed, and delayed again, and we must now endure a further seven months of “MetroBus misery” (see page 19).

The impact of the MetroBus roadworks in north Bradley Stoke has been immense, with the prolonged closure of the Bradley Stoke Way (BSW) / Woodlands Lane junction forcing huge volumes of traffic down Pear Tree Road and Bowsland Way, resulting in gridlock at peak times.

More recently, the closure of one of three lanes of BSW on its final approach to the Aztec West Roundabout, along with lane closures on the BSW approaches to Patchway Brook Roundabout, have predictably worsened the situation, resulting in all-day congestion.

With residents and workers reporting delays of up to an hour in getting out of Bradley Stoke, the economic cost of these roadworks must be enormous, not to mention the emotional stress suffered by everyone caught up in them.

Car drivers have certainly had it bad, but those who rely on our local bus services have suffered even more. As if the delays and diversions caused by the MetroBus roadworks weren’t enough, bus passengers have seen the X74 route axed and had to put up with appalling unreliability on the town’s key X73 commuter service since the timetable was changed last September.

At a time when we most needed local representatives to stand up for us, our councillors and MP have been, in the words of one Journal reader, “about as much use as a chocolate teapot”.

South Gloucestershire Council, which has ultimate responsibility for the MetroBus route being constructed through Bradley Stoke, has ridden roughshod over the residents of our town, showing scant regard for the massive disruption it has caused.

A widely held belief is that the council has allowed work to proceed on too many fronts at the same time, and that insufficient mitigation measures have been put in place.

But will it all be worth it in the end (whenever that might turn out to be)? Well, let’s face it, MetroBus is never going to be

as good as the tram system that was promised all those years ago. When first proposed, the alternative of a ‘bus rapid transit’ system with dedicated lanes along its entire length looked like a reasonable solution, but then the government swung its costcutting axe and we are now left with a patchwork of discontinuous bus lanes. And, disappointingly, it won’t even provide a direct service between Bradley Stoke and Parkway Station.

There is little doubt that journeys to key destinations like the city centre and Cribbs Causeway will be quicker and more reliable with MetroBus, but with most people needing to walk further to get to a MetroBus stop (to some extent negating the faster journey times) and the continued lure of free car parking at The Mall, it remains to be

seen whether it will become the transformational success that our local councils have banked on as the foundation stone of their strategic planning.

But at least we are getting the Stoke Gifford By-Pass out of it, after a wait of twenty years!

This will bring much needed relief to the residents of Stoke Gifford “village” and allow for much quicker journeys between Bradley Stoke and the M32. But there are also fears that the bypass could be a doubled-edged sword, creating a handy short-cut for long-distance commuters between the Almondsbury Interchange and major employment sites like UWE and MoD Abbeywood, particularly when there is an incident on the M4 or at the top of the M32. ● “What actually is MetroBus?” Answers on page 33.

Almondsbury helibase planning application: Decision made, quashed and then remade

PLANS for a new helicopter base in Almondsbury, on a green belt site just across the M5 motorway from north Bradley Stoke, were originally submitted to South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) in April 2015.

The proposed new helibase is intended to serve the needs of the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity and the National Police Air Service, whose helicopters are currently based at Filton Airfield.

BAE Systems, which owned the airfield at the time of the original planning application, and had plans to redevelop it with 2,675 residential dwellings, said it was necessary to relocate the helicopter base because leaving it at the airfield would lead to “the loss of approximately 400 residential dwellings and a significant proportion of affordable housing”.

It was also claimed that the emergency services’ current base would become unsuitable due to demolition and construction activity in the vicinity of helicopter operations over many years.

Outline planning permission for the airfield redevelopment has since been granted and the site sold to YTL Utilities (UK), part of the international conglomerate that owns Wessex Water.

An SGC committee approved the helibase plans in July 2015, but a resident of Almondsbury threatened to issue proceedings to judicially review the decision, citing a failure to properly consider environmental impacts and questioning whether the “very special circumstances” required for development in the green belt had been justified when there was an option to retain the base at its current site. The decision to grant planning permission was subsequently quashed, meaning

that SGC officers were forced to re-examine the application and bring it back to councillors for re-determination.

Bradley Stoke Town Council (BSTC) originally declined to declare an opinion on the application, but when the case was reopened, it objected, citing concerns over the accuracy of noise reports and asking for alternative sites to be revisited.

SGC’s Development Control (West) Committee was eventually ask to reconsider the application on 11th August 2016. At this meeting, councillors accepted the view of officers that the “very special circumstances” that justified development in the green belt could be summarised as: • No suitable, available alternative sites; • Retention of the facility on the Filton site poses potential risks and could curtail the operation of the facility; • Reduction in the ability of the Filton site to deliver homes (including affordable homes) and possible employment development if the facility were retained on the Filton site; • The need for emergency services and the public benefit of regional importance which the timely and safe retention of the facility on the application site would protect.

In granting permission, councillors added a condition that requires a community liaison forum to be set up, whose members will include a representative from BSTC. ● YTL have indicated that they intend to increase the number of residential dwellings to be constructed on the former Filton Airfield site to around 3,600. A revised planning application is expected to be submitted soon.

Double celebration for air ambulance charity

G

reat Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) had cause to celebrate the biggest week in its history at the end of November, when it received final confirmation of planning permission for a new helicopter operations base at a site near the Almondsbury Interchange and learned that a £1 million grant was heading its way.

GWAAC chief executive John Christensen said: “Finding a new base has been a long journey for us, and I am glad that it is now finally over, and we can begin work. Our main focus has been to find a site that is easily accessible both by helicopter and car, and the Almondsbury site was the only viable option. I am pleased that we will have a modern base that will ensure that we can continue to provide this life-saving service.”

in the UK. It will finally allow the charity to operate out of a building that is fit for purpose.

GWAAC has been based on Filton Airfield since its first flight in 2008. However, the airfield is now being redeveloped, which meant that the charity needed a

new home to operate from. Work is set to begin on the new base for GWAAC and NPAS early in 2017, and the charity hopes to be operational from the site by the end of the year.

The news about the base came just days after GWAAC received a £1 million one-off grant from the government’s Libor funds.

The grant was one of a number announced by Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond on 23rd November as part of his autumn statement.

The 2012 Libor rate fixing scandal involved a series of fraudulent transactions connected to the Libor, or London Interbank Offered Rate.

HM Treasury subsequently agreed to donate some of the fines imposed on financial institutions in the wake of the scandal to be used to support military and emergency services charities.

News Watch Elm Close Christmas lights provide welcome boost for brace of charities

wo charities stand to benefit to the tune of several hundred pounds from an extravagant Christmas lights display on a house in Watch Elm Close, Bradley Stoke.

Mike Checkley and Terry James have decorated the outside of their home with forty-four sets

of lights, incorporating a total of around 17,000 individual bulbs, and are inviting people who visit the festive display to make donations, which will be shared equally between Cancer Research UK and Freewheelers Blood Bikes.

Having taken around a week to set up, the display went ‘live’ on

1st December. It will be poweredup every night, between 4pm and 9.30pm, until Sunday 1st January 2017. Anyone visiting the display may leave a donation in a collecting bucket positioned on the drive of the property.

New additions this year include a Santa tree, a snowman tree, three pre-lit window trees and two new Christmas trees in the garage conversion. The pair say they try to “keep things simple”, with the focus being principally on the lights rather than lots of novelty items.

Mike said: “We choose Cancer Research UK as cancer has affected both our families and we know touches many others. The Blood Bikes do a fantastic job supporting the NHS and we have friends who ride for the charity.”

“Feedback so far has been 100 percent positive and many children say they look forward to our lights every year, which is lovely.”

Our service to the NHS is provided free of charge and is funded entirely by public donation and sponsorship. We transport blood, pathology & microbiology specimens, patient notes, X-rays, breast milk, and other medical supplies. In 2014, we made 3,648 deliveries, riding more than 120,000 miles.

In Brief Planning permission granted for food store

Emergency services attend collisions on Brook Way

The prospect of a discount retailer, thought most likely to be Lidl, opening a branch within part of the former B&Q building in Fox Den Road, Stoke Gifford has moved a step closer with the granting of planning permission for a change of use to permit the retail sale of food and drink.

The building has been vacant since B&Q ceased trading in June 2016, although only part of it had been in use for some years after B&Q reduced its floorspace.

Stoke Gifford Parish Council objected to the application, expressing concern that it might lead to “increased traffic usage off what is a very busy mini roundabout”, but officers at South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) concluded that the development “would not have any significant detrimental effects on local transport networks”.

A motorcyclist needed medical treatment after a crash in Bradley Stoke on Friday 2nd December.

Fire crews from Patchway, Avonmouth and Southmead were called at 9.14pm to reports of a collision between a motorcycle and a car on Brook Way, close to the Hollow Tree pub, which resulted in the car catching fire.

A firefighter wearing breathing apparatus used a high pressure hose reel to extinguish the blaze.

The motorcyclist was handed over to the care of the ambulance service, while fire service crews made the scene safe.

Three days later, on Monday 5th December, also on Brook Way, a car struck a pair of black metal bollards on a small traffic island to the side of a speed cushion near the junction with The Common East.

The vehicle’s airbag deployed and it came to a halt over one of the bollards.

Conditions attached to the existing planning permission which relate to delivery hours, construction hours and external lighting will remain in force.

It is not currently known when Lidl, or any other retailer, might begin trading at the site.

Another part of the former B&Q building has recently been converted into a gym and this is due to open on 2nd January 2017 under the DW Fitness brand.

A witness reported that the elderly female driver appeared “unhurt but shaken up”.

A doctor and other staff from the nearby Bradley Stoke Surgery attended and passers-by helped take care of the driver prior to the arrival of the emergency services.

In January 2016, a people carrier struck a bollard on the same traffic island, resulting in the vehicle being flipped over onto its side (photo above).

Before that, on 1st October 2015, a car overturned after striking an identical traffic island further down Brook Way, near the Merryweather Close junction.

Following the incident in 2015, South Gloucestershire Council applied small strips of reflective tape to some of the bollards.

Sophie’s story – In her own words

Anorexia survivor launches charity fundraising campaign

Since I was 12, I suffered from anorexia, depression and body dysmporhic disorder. From playing sport, enjoying my food and not being fazed by anything, my life just wasn’t the same and very quickly my health became worse. From then on, I had to stop sport, drop most of my GCSE subjects, went into hospital for 5-6 months, dropped out of college three times and it has also affected my performance in previous employment.

In February 2016 I could really feel myself drifting away as my physical and mental health was deteriorating. However, in March, I met a personal trainer, Joanna Nowak, who has completely changed my life. At first I would meet up with her to talk to and she would add in stuff into my diet in order to get me healthy again.

This was really hard, but I put my trust in her. As the months have gone on, I have reached a healthy weight for the first time ever, my body is fully functioning, I’m eating six times a day and I am getting stronger every day in and out of the gym. The most important thing for me though is that I finally feel like myself again, which feels amazing.

Words cannot describe how much I appreciate what Joanna has done for me and continues to do so. If I hadn’t met her, I fear I would have been dead before my 20th birthday in May 2016. Her personality, support and attitude to life have rubbed off on me and that is why I am now taking the challenge of fundraising next year, all in aid of Beat, an eating disorders charity.

A

young woman from Bradley Stoke who suffered from anorexia from the age of 12 is organising a programme of local fundraising events throughout 2017 in aid of Beat, one of the UK’s leading eating disorders charities.

Sophie Mitchell, now 20, spent nearly six months in hospital around the time of her sixteenth birthday and has only recently returned to a healthy weight.

Having the condition for such a long period of time also affected Sophie’s education, as she explains: “When I did my GCSEs, all of my friends did between ten and 15 subjects and I had to drop quite a few subjects – which meant I only did five GCSEs – as I wasn’t coping with the amount of work that was required.”

After years of turmoil caused by the illness, Sophie’s life took a turn for the better in March 2016 when she met Joanna Nowak, a personal trainer at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre. From being in state where she felt she was “drifting away” as her physical and mental health deteriorated, Sophie says Joanna has been

Although she says her battle is “far from over”, she has set herself the target of raising £500 for Beat through a range of events in 2017 that is expected to include quiz nights, bake sales, karaoke nights, a sponsored swim and participation in the Bradley Stoke 10k Run on 11th June.

Sophie’s first fundraising event of the year will be a quiz night at the Baileys Court Inn starting at 9pm on Sunday 15th January.

She hopes to stage further quiz nights and raffles later in the year at the Three Brooks pub and the Beaufort Arms in Stoke Gifford.

Safe stolen in Woodlands Park burglary

P

olice are appealing for information after thieves broke into a home in Woodlands Park, Bradley Stoke on Monday 5th December and stole a safe containing cash, jewellery and papers.

The burglary happened between 10am and 9.30pm. The thieves forced a window and managed to steal the safe, even though it was bolted to the floorboards.

They made off with cash in Australian, Canadian and Hong Kong dollars, a collection of Royal Mint coins and papers, as well as gold jewellery including a chain necklace, a chain bracelet and a snake pendant.

Investigating officer Alastair Binnie said: “It would have taken some effort for these thieves to steal this heavy safe and they would have needed a vehicle to take it away.”

“I’d like to hear from anyone who noticed anything suspicious

in the Woodlands Park area on this day or who has any other information which could help the investigation.”

A

t the risk of sounding grumpy and curmudgeonly, I really dislike this time of year. There is the anticlimax of the fallow weeks after the festive period, with the protracted cleaning up of decorations, trips to the dump, and the thick Velcro-like trail of pine needles through the house where the skeletal tree has been dragged outside. There are only so many ways you can reinvent cold turkey, and the wine which was so unctuous on the day, now tastes sour and gritty. The general feeling of gloom is compounded by the pile of thank you letters which have to be written, and the anticipation of the credit card bill at the end of the month. The weak short days, and clinging damp outside add to the burden.

As a nation we should be able to snuggle up under a Great Britain sized duvet, to be gently

woken after the clocks have gone forward, and the daffodils and camellias are at their blazing best.

In an effort to concentrate the mind, and give an incentive to get through to the spring, we have New Year resolutions.

These usually involve self improvement and sacrifice, to create a leaner, reinvigorated individual, better able to deal with life’s challenges, more self confident and positive, shoulders back, chin up and chest out. “ Yeah, bring it on!”

I hear you cry. So whether it is giving up the cigarettes, cutting out the biscuits and dusting off the running shoes, or going dry through January, now is the time to throw down the resolution gauntlet. I have the challenge of getting on the surgery scales on 2nd January, and getting more miles on my bike in preparation for a

mountain ascent in September.

Stop sniggering at the back!

So, having laid bare my ambition, I thought about resolutions for other people that might be appropriate for 2017.

These have proved far easier to suggest.

• Jeremy Hunt – please resolve to use plain honest evidence based language, and stop the oily politicking – please let us know where you are going with the NHS. • MetroBus – please resolve to complete the roadworks on Bradley Stoke Way before Christmas 2017, so you do not need to resolve to complete them before Christmas 2018.

• First Bus - please resolve to learn to count from 72 to 74, there should be a 73 in there somewhere.

• White van drivers – please resolve not to use bus and cycles lanes on the A38 as your

own personal highway to avoid queues.

• The good citizens of Bradley Stoke – please resolve to take sensible decisions about selfcare and lifestyles – it pays dividends in the long term.

Happy New Year to you all, and good luck with the resolutions, there will be a review in three months.

Three Brooks nature news for December

T

he weather may be mild again, but with bare trees and muddy paths, there is no mistaking that winter has finally arrived on the reserve. At least our resident bird population have somewhere warm and dry to call home, as we’ve started to replace our old wooden bird boxes with ones made from woodcrete (a mixture of sawdust and cement). Although these are heavy and expensive, we are hoping that they will last much longer. Colin Davies, when he’s not making the boot brushes that are at the reserve exits, has made

us some different style boxes and we’ll compare the two before replacing them all. Giant Bristol, the Willow Brook cycle shop, has generously donated to us several boxes of cycle inner tubes; these make great waterproof hinges for the boxes and any left over will be used as tree ties.

We have done a tremendous amount of work over the year.

Green Gym volunteers have put in more than 1,840 hours of work on site, which is equal to nearly £26,000, and the Saturday group added another 1,014 hours (over £14,000). In

oint venture partners and commercial property developers and investors, St Francis Group and iSec have announced the signing of two key deals with prospective tenants at Horizon 38, the new mixed used development that is starting to take shape on the former RollsRoyce East Works site, south of Gipsy Patch Lane.

In the first deal, detailed planning consent has been granted by South Gloucestershire Council for the development of a new 35,000 sq ft trade centre for Selco, a chain of trade-only builders merchants. The deal will see Selco take a 15-year lease at an undisclosed rent. Building work is set to begin in March and be completed by October 2017.

Chris Cunliffe, CEO of Selco, commented: “Selco are pleased to confirm our deal with St Francis Group and iSec which will us open our second branch in Bristol. This is a great opportunity for Selco as we continue our expansion in the UK and strengthen our position in the Bristol marketplace. This opportunity will see more than 50 jobs created to support the local community and will also offer genuine career opportunities.”

In the second deal, St Francis Group and iSec have confirmed a deal with Village Urban Resorts

for the development of a new 153-bedroom hotel occupying the prominent plot on the corner of the A38 and Gipsy Patch Lane. Work on the hotel is due to commence in August 2017, following completion of the internal site infrastructure works and estate road construction. The hotel is expected to be open by summer 2018.

The new Village Hotel Club will deliver a business class hotel with a business and events HUB and a state-of-the-art health and fitness club including swimming pool, bar and restaurant. The new Village Hotel Club – which will create 100 new jobs – will act as a catalyst for the wider Horizon 38 scheme and represents an investment of £21m.

Iain Stackhouse, head of property at Village Hotel Club, said: “We’re growing the Village Hotel Club network by investing into quality new locations and Horizon 38 will be our 30th site. Abacus @ Meadowbrook impresses Ofsted

A

Bradley Stoke pre-school is celebrating after being awarded a full set of ‘outstanding’ grades in a recent Ofsted inspection.

Abacus @ Meadowbrook, which has been established in free-standing accommodation within the grounds of Meadowbrook Primary School since 2014, was visited by an inspector at the end of November and she concluded that the quality and standard of early years provision at the pre-school is now ‘outstanding’ in all four assessment categories.

The latest result is a step up from the ‘good’ grade awarded to the setting at its previous inspection in May 2014.

In her summary of key findings, the inspector praises the manager, Amanda Lacey, for being an “inspiring and enthusiastic leader of her team” and remarks on the “highly effective relationships” that the setting has with Meadowbrook Primary, other agencies and the local community.

Communications with parents are said to be “excellent”, a factor which helps foster a partnership that “contributes very successfully to the children’s impressive outcomes”.

Children with English as a second language are judged to make “impressive progress” and the children “respect and celebrate differences and diversity”.

The environment and resources at the pre-school are said to be “excellent” and children enjoy an extensive range of learning opportunities both inside and outside the accommodation.

Reacting to the report, Abacus @ Meadowbrook manager Amanda Lacey said: “We would like to thank all of the staff, parents and children for their continuing support. Our

striving to develop and maintain relationships within the local and wider community has enhanced the children’s play and learning opportunities whilst our dedicated team continues to provide a wonderful learning

environment for all of the children. Our directors and all of the staff are all thrilled with the outcome and have been enjoying the celebrations this week.”

W – Write a weekly plan

MetroBus roadworks to continue until July

M

etroBus construction work will still be going on within Bradley Stoke as late as July 2017, despite roadside signs still saying the work is due to be completed in the spring, the Journal can reveal.

At the start of the project in September 2015, contractors Alun Griffiths said they planned to finish all MetroBus work in the town by Christmas 2016, beating the advertised completion date by a few months, but the discovery of a series of uncharted gas and water mains at the north end of Bradley Stoke Way (BSW) has delayed progress, meaning that this section will now not be complete until 17th March 2017.

Additionally, land acquisition issues at the south end of BSW, where a new southbound bus lane is to be constructed on the approach to Great Stoke Roundabout (a.k.a. Rabbit Roundabout), have meant that it has not been possible to commence work in this area. The Journal has learned that this work is now scheduled to start at the beginning of March and finish on 11th July 2017.

Traffic congestion in north Bradley Stoke plumbed new depths of intolerability from 12th November when the inside lane of three on the BSW approach to the Aztec West Roundabout was closed to allow the construction of a new left filter bus lane. During the four weeks of chaos that followed, there were reports of frustrated motorists getting out of their vehicles to move barriers so that they could make the banned right turn out of Woodlands Lane and even driving up the wrong side of the road to escape the gridlock. The misery lasted until 11th December, when most of the closed lane was reopened, resulting in an instant improvement in journey times.

As reported in our December magazine, the full reopening of the Woodlands Lane junction

is dependent on Griffiths’ completion of the bus slip lane on BSW and a number of central traffic islands, as well as signalisation works that will be carried out by South Gloucestershire Council.

As we went to press, a MetroBus spokesperson told us: “The current planned dates for signals are that work will begin w/c 9th January. The installation will take approximately ten days. At this point the road will need to be resurfaced and white lined. Work is currently ahead of schedule and this means that providing surfacing resources can be obtained and there are no unexpected problems, Woodlands Lane should be open by early February.”

A similar sequence of work is required at the Orchard Gate junction, which is expected to reopen around the same time.

Resurfacing work will be carried out overnight and will require the full closure of BSW, on a number of selected nights, between Patchway Brook Roundabout and the Aztec West Roundabout. Advance notice of these road closures will be given and signed diversions will be put in place.

The final approach to Patchway Brook Roundabout on BSW westbound (currently reduced to one lane) was expected to be restored to two lanes, in a temporary state, before Christmas, although some occasional off-peak lane closures will be required in the new year.

Between Patchway Brook Roundabout and the Aztec West Roundabout, the contractors were said to be trying to get all ‘as designed’ general traffic lanes completed by Christmas, meaning that two westbound lanes would become available shortly after the Orchard Gate junction (currently single lane until the Woodlands Lane junction). However, off-peak lane closures may still be required

until the end of January.

Asked when the two lane exit from the Aztec West Roundabout onto BSW eastbound (currently reduced to one lane) might be restored, the spokesperson said: “This will need to be maintained until the completion of our central island works and the signals works at the end of Woodlands Lane. Therefore it should be open at the end of January. However, off peak closures may still be required periodically and we may need to assess how reopening this affects the traffic management regarding South Gloucestershire Council’s road widening works on the A38

approaching Aztec West.” [See report on A38 work on page 29] The informal pedestrian crossing of BSW on the eastern arm of Patchway Brook Roundabout, which provides a direct route between Bowsland Way and Aldi, is expected to reopen in mid-January.

Asked if MetroBus services on the North Fringe to Hengrove Package route are still on track to commence from the previously advised date of September 2017, the spokesperson said: “MetroBus is still on track to launch in the autumn. The launch will be phased in as and when the infrastructure is complete.”

Progress report on the Stoke Gifford Transport Link (a.k.a. Stoke Gifford By-Pass) A4174 – for a period estimated as four weeks, from early January to early February, we shall be starting on the second phase of signalisation work on the east and westbound carriageways of the junction of the link road with the A4174. This will involve lane closures in both directions but only for evening work outside of peak hours (from 6pm to 1am at the latest). Lighting towers will be erected and, each night, a short section of road will be worked on.

Hambrook Lane will be closed from early February for three weeks to conduct second phase works for construction of farmer’s access and lane widening. Advanced notice signage will be in place and diversions signposted (plans are also available online).

Record amount raised during Poppy Week

T

he Stoke Gifford Branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) has announced that it has banked £47,000 from collections made during this year’s Poppy Fortnight in late October and early November - a record at this stage of the Poppy Appeal year.

The amount raised through collections at Bradley Stoke’s Willow Brook Centre was “particularly good” this year, according to branch spokesperson David Bell.

Further fundraising activities are scheduled to take place before the appeal year ends on 30th September 2017.

The news follows confirmation from RBL head office that the Stoke Gifford branch raised just over £50,000 through the Poppy Appeal in 2015/16 – a fantastic amount for a small branch.

Mr Bell commented: “Our great fundraising has only been

Branch chairman John Moloney and branch president Brian Hewitt MBE recently attended the University of the West of England’s student union RAG celebration afternoon to present certificates to UWE students who have done voluntary work for the RBL. Amongst the students honoured were Zak Ajjane (who has played the Last Post and Reveille on the trumpet at many recent branch ceremonies), Maria di Somma and Nicolai Bidder.

Olivia Evans, vice-president (societies and communication) of the student union at UWE said: “It’s great that so many students get involved with RBL’s Stoke Gifford branch. The connection with the local branch ensures students have a great time volunteering and fundraising for the Poppy Appeal.”

Money raised through the Poppy Appeal goes to the RBL’s Welfare Fund, which is used to give help and support to current and ex service personnel and their families.

Emotional send-off for Wheatfield headteacher

B

radley Stoke’s longestserving headteacher has retired after being in charge of Wheatfield Primary School for 18 years.

Christine Dursley, who has led the school since it first opened in 1998, was given emotional sendoffs by governors, parents, staff and pupils at a series of functions

held during the final week of the autumn term.

Miss Dursley had announced her intention to resign from her post in a letter sent to parents in early October, at a time when she was absent from school due to ill health. She was subsequently able to return to work on a phased and part-time basis from

the beginning of November.

In her letter to parents, she wrote: “It has been a huge privilege and honour to be head of Wheatfield for over 18 years and to watch the school grow from its small beginnings and develop into the happy, diverse, thriving and successful learning community it is today.”

“During that time, I have worked with amazingly talented staff and governors, who have tirelessly endeavoured to make a difference for the many children, including yours, who have walked through our doors.”

“I cannot adequately describe how much I will miss being a part of the very large family, which is Wheatfield! I will especially miss our wonderful children, who each and every day, have never failed to make me proud, ‘warm’ my heart and bring many a smile to my face, but feel that now is the right time to leave!”

Speaking at a retirement party held on Monday 12th December, Sue Davey, chair of governors, said she had calculated that a total of 1,360 children had passed through the school since it opened in 1998.

Turning to Miss Dursley, she added: “That’s 1,360 children, just from Wheatfield, who are better for having had you in their lives. That’s 1,360 children who you have known as individuals and who will have happy memories of Wheatfield and you that will last a lifetime. That’s 1,360 children who have been able to flourish and grow in a safe and fun-loving environment whilst achieving their very best.”

“This is your school, you ARE Wheatfield and it will be a very different place without you. But, due to your energy, commitment and determination, you leave Wheatfield in a very strong position from where it can travel into the future with confidence and assured success. For this we are very grateful.”

Pupils gave Miss Dursley their own send-off at a special assembly held on Thursday 15th December (see photo; more online).

Asked about plans for her retirement, Miss Dursley said she will be taking it easy for a while as she is still recovering from illness.

Once returned to full health, she hopes to enjoy a few holidays and will “probably end up doing some volunteering”, particularly at her local church, where she is already very involved.

Letter and Opinions Four miles in 45min?

Think yourself lucky!

I read the articles in the December issue of the Journal magazine regarding the “traffic problems” that the current roadworks are causing and would like to comment about the travelling time during peak times from 7.30am to 9am Monday – Friday. With regard to Graham Osborn’s comment (Letters) that “it took 45min to travel four miles,” he wants to think himself lucky! I travel along Bowsland Way up to Aztec West daily and for three days in a row it took me more than an hour to get to work in Avonmouth. I was 30 to 45 minutes late each day; on one day it took me from 8.15am to 8.50am to get from the Primrose Bridge crossing lights to Patchway Brook Roundabout, approx 500m.

Having left home in Ellicks Close at 8.15am, I arrived at work at 9.20am; the distance from my house to Aztec West is about one mile, the rest of the journey on the M5 took about 15min. These are what I would call “traffic problems” and I see no sign of them subsiding any time soon.

This is now a daily occurrence, meaning that I don’t know what time I should leave home in the mornings to get to work.

What is more, I don’t foresee it getting better anytime soon, even when the MetroBus comes into operation during 2017. I see this as being a waste of time and money as it will be nothing more than a very expensive bus lane.

I don’t believe the new bus lane is going to ease or solve the current issues, which the council does not appear to be getting to grip with.

I must ask the question of the council’s highways/transport department: Are the people making decisions actual road users, i.e. do they drive a car, lorry, bus etc.? Going by what is being implemented, it would appear not, i.e. they do not fully understand the implications of their actions.

First Steps Toddler Group at Christ the King

By Nikki Hallur irst Steps is a very popular toddler group that runs on Mondays and Tuesdays, from 9.50am to 11.30am, at Christ the King Church, Mautravers Close (off Brook Way) in Bradley Stoke. The group is run

by Jessica Stone and Liz Evans.

We visited the group on a Monday morning to see what it had to offer. The church has good facilities for parking, hallway space for pushchairs, accessible cloakrooms as well as a large carpeted room for the toddler group. There is a baby corner with sensory toys, whilst the rest of the room is dedicated to toddler toys such as a kitchen corner, animal toys, vehicle toys and an area with slides, bikes and trikes. It is a busy group that takes children from six months up to five years, although most

of the children in the group are between one and three years old.

The cost of entry is £2 for adults and 50p per child, and included in this price is a healthy snack for the children, as well as tea or coffee with a cake for adults. The group has an agenda that involves storytime, which the children can listen to as they have their snack, and an arts or crafts activity which they can do with supervision. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, children were making Christmas baubles from card and paint. There is also a singing session at the end, after tidy-up time around 11.10.

Occasionally, the group has a local business selling their goods, and this time it was local mum Fiona Green who makes baby and toddler accessories, such as hats, mittens and socks, for her company, Dream Art Decor.

We spoke to a couple of the parents and grandparents who all gave very positive feedback about the group. Amelia Collins is a grandparent who brings twoyear-old Evie, and she said it’s “a fabulous group, as you get a good amount of time”. Organiser Liz Evans said: “We enjoy bringing the community together.”

The group recently had a tabletop sale in which they raised

Lower back pain

ower back pain is normally caused by overloading or overusing the joints or muscles in the lower back. The pain can vary from being localised to being referred to the buttocks and even into the legs, which can be as a result of a trapped nerve. This is commonly called sciatica.

Chiropractors treat lower back pain by using hands-on techniques. Patients are treated according to their individual needs. After taking a history of the problem, a relevant physical and neurological examination is done. The best way forward is discussed with the patient and treatment offered can be in different forms – joint manipulation, muscle release, massage, mobilisation, acupuncture and home exercises; or any combination of these.

Specific joint manipulation can be used if necessary to achieve the best results and chiropractors undertake many years of training to enable them to identify the correct type of manipulation for the problem at hand. All treatments are discussed with the patient before being undertaken.

Chiropractors manipulate specific joints between vertebrae to ease discomfort and improve movement, which allows the body to repair. The joint has a capsule around it which holds gases and fluids. When a joint is moved, the gas pressure in the capsule changes making

a ‘popping’ sound. It is not usually painful and pain relief can sometimes be immediate.

However, if there is spasm in the surrounding muscle it may be more difficult to manipulate the joint and other treatment may be advised initially.

Chiropractic care has been shown to be extremely effective in treating lower back pain.

However, as with most things, the longer you leave something, the longer it takes to get better, so do not hesitate to seek advice.

Chiropractors tend to mostly see patients with lower back problems as they are seen as ‘spinal specialists’. However, they are trained in assessing and treating many conditions including general joint and muscle pain, sports injuries, neck and shoulder problems and many types of headaches.

People of all ages can benefit from chiropractic. Treatment is modified for younger and older patients. Currently my youngest patient is a gorgeous 4-monthold and my oldest is a sprightly 93-year-old!

Work under way at the Aztec West Roundabout as part of the A38 widening scheme

Four-day lane closure on A38 in January

S

outh Gloucestershire Council has announced plans to close the inside lane of the A38 southbound approach to the Aztec West Roundabout for three days in January, in order to carry out a “significant” gas main diversion.

The move breaks an assurance given by the council prior to the commencement of the project that major carriageway work would not be carried out on the A38 until “after the Bradley Stoke Way section of the MetroBus works has been completed”.

The work on the A38 is being funded as part of an £18.1 million Growth Deal award made to the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership and is intended to “mitigate the impact of traffic arising from new developments”, such as the Cribbs/Patchway New Neighbourhood where 5,700 new homes are expected to be constructed by 2027.

work, which is being carried out jointly with Wales & West Utilities, will commence on the evening of Thursday 12th January 2017, when a lane closure will be placed on the A38 southbound. This will reduce the number of traffic lanes from four down to three. The lane closure will then stay in place throughout the whole of the following Friday, Saturday and Sunday while the gas diversion is being completed. It is anticipated that the diversion will be finished in time for reopening the lane for the morning peak of Monday 16th January.

A South Gloucestershire Council spokesperson said: “The work has been planned for January in order to have the least impact on traffic, although motorists are advised to allow additional journey time to mitigate for any delays.”

Commenting on the overlap with the ongoing MetroBus

works on Bradley Stoke Way, the spokesperson added: “The current major construction work taking place on the A38 southbound is advanced utility work and this has been planned and booked many months in advance. Unfortunately, delays in the MetroBus project will see an overlap of work. However this has been mitigated as much as possible by removing the central reserve, creating an additional lane, and 24-hour working over a four day period. Cancelling the work was not possible without causing major impacts on budgets and the timing of the overall construction programme.”

Three times each year (each course has a limit of 45 people for ‘health & safety’ reasons) we offer a training course for women who wish to start running, have never run before or are returning after a long period of rest/illness/injury.

We set a realistic training programme, it’s a gradual buildup of mileage which, at the end of six weeks you will be able to join one of our main groups and hopefully enjoy it with a certain amount of self-satisfaction.

MetroBus: Frequently asked questions

What actually is MetroBus? MetroBus works like a tram only it runs on tyres and instead of rails it uses bus lanes and guided busways. It’s connected to the city’s traffic light system to ensure it moves quickly past other road vehicles and if you miss one… there will be another along in just a few minutes.

What kind of vehicle will MetroBus use?

MetroBuses will be fuel efficient hybrid vehicles or equivalent with low emissions and feature twin doors to speed up boarding and exiting.

Why is there so much disruption ?

For MetroBus to work it has to be quick and reliable and therefore it cannot get caught up in traffic.

To overcome this, new bus lanes and bus gates have to be built.

(A bus gate is a traffic light at the end of a bus lane that allows a MetroBus to jump a queue). In Bristol, the MetroBus route is 50km long. That’s a lot of new bus lanes… hence the disruption.

How will services be operated?

MetroBus will be operated on a commercial basis by private contractors in partnership with

Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire councils.

The partnership sets out minimum standards covering things like: vehicle emissions, service frequencies, ticket prices and how often the buses are cleaned.

Operators are in final negotiations and they are expected to be announced in January 2017. At this point, final details such as timetables and ticket prices will be made known.

When will services start?

Services will start autumn 2017.

The services will be phased in with Long Ashton to Temple Meads expected to be running first.

Where will services go?

See map on facing page.

How much will tickets cost?

The partnership agreement sets out the maximum fare levels for a single journey that the operators can charge (see facing page).

Concessionary travelcards will be accepted on all MetroBus services.

The actual ticket prices will be set by the operators and this will be announced when final negotiations have ended.

What ticketing will be used?

You will need to buy tickets before boarding. This will speed up passenger boarding times, which in turn will lead to a faster, more reliable service.

Passengers will be able to buy their tickets from MetroBus stops, online, at local shops and via their mobile phones.

The ticket machines at MetroBus stops will accept bank card and smartcard payments, but not cash. You will also be able to use mobile phone applications or buy tickets using cash at local shops.

The exact types of tickets available and their prices will be set by the MetroBus operators.

How regular will MetroBus services be?

This will depend on the route and time of day. MetroBuses on the Cribbs Causeway to Hengrove Park route should run every ten minutes during peak times.

How much quicker will MetroBus be?

The MetroBus will be much quicker than existing bus services and car journeys due to the following reasons: • Direct Routes for many people who currently have to change.

• Off-bus ticket purchasing • Fewer stops • Bus priority at junctions • New bus lanes • New bus only roads like the new M32 bus only junction.

Remember whenever you leave it, always lock it, using a good quality bike lock – check out ones which have been tested by locksmiths at www.soldsecure. com. That includes when it’s stored in your shed or garage – chain it to a ground-anchor and make sure you’ve fitted a ‘shed alarm’ to deter thieves.

In these dark winter evenings, if you’re taking to the roads as a pedestrian, cyclist or on a motorbike, make sure you’re wearing reflective high visibility

clothing. Cyclists should also make sure their bikes have lights and reflectors fitted and working. Drivers, please take extra care to look out for other road users.

Elderly neighbours

Do spare a thought for elderly neighbours who may be particularly lonely as the winter stretches ahead. We know when vulnerable people feel isolated they can be more likely to fall victim to crime – rogue trading and doorstep crime in particular.

Sometimes, all it takes is a simple ‘hello’ to an elderly neighbour, to make them feel safer and part of the community.

Look out for them and please report any suspicious activity to us, in particular unfamiliar people going door-to-door.

Electrical apprenticeships available now in BS32!

DCET Training, part of The Focus Training Group, have gone from strength to strength since opening their Electrical Specialist Training Centre in Bradley Stoke in spring 2016.

The centre currently trains 78 electrical apprentices across three year groups. Michelle Moylan, Centre Manager told us: “We have been blown away with the support we have gained since opening. Local electrical companies have joined our ranks of apprentice employers and we are growing far quicker than even we could have hoped for – it’s a lovely position to be in.”

Michelle went on to explain: “We will be running a new apprentice group in March 2017.

We currently have employers looking to recruit an apprentice.

If there are any students who have decided college/sixth form isn’t for them, I’d be delighted to hear from them. With a commitment to the electrical industry, we could help put students on a career path for life“.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12A)

U

nless you had been on Degobah in a galaxy far, far away, you will certainly have noticed one year has now passed since the last Star Wars release. With the bar now set with the success of Disney’s retro re-boot, does Rogue One’s director Gareth Edwards deserve to pop off some celebratory blaster shots?

I would certainly say so! Here’s my review for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – rated 12A. Without a doubt, Rogue One puts the WAR back in to Star Wars! With no opening crawl to set the scene, the films status as a standalone project is instantly realised. The beginning of the film and its accompanying music sets the pulse racing!

If you are familiar with the previous films, you will know that this story is about a secret space weapon called the Death Star. This giant space station is the brain child of an enslaved

genius called Galen Erson (played by Mads Mikkelson). His work is administered by director Orson Krennic, a cunning vindictive careerist. Relentlessly flanked by his Death Troopers, Krennic is ever ready to unleash his formidable praetorian styled elite, in order to protect the Empire against rebellion.

The story resumes with the Rebels reacting quickly to news of this giant planet killer.

Jyn Orso, Galen’s daughter (played by a well-spoken Felicity Jones) befriends long-time rebel and veteran Cassian Andor (played by Diego Luna).

They both command a rag tag rebel group, called Rogue One, as it travels to Scarif, a beautiful tropical planet, ruined only by a towering secret imperial

installation. This planet becomes the setting for a tense battle and a high stakes face to face encounter for both sides.

Edwards expands his universe introducing a rolodex of planets very quickly in this film. There are some strong relationships on show as he concentrates on the father and family relationship – a notable signature of the original films.

On the other hand, unlike George Lucas, he decided to move away from the World War influences to Vietnam and more modern conflicts for his battle scenes.

There are very few faults with this fantastic film, although the only things that didn’t impress were the overly self-assured use of CGI, the implausible amount of planets with breathable

atmospheres and it also felt that a few x-wing tragedies could have been easily avoided with the rationale of an ejector seat or two!

What I really liked was the consistency of music, continuity in costume, previous film overlap, the character references, the new troopers, new vehicles and the breathtaking visuals. There is far too much good to mention, but I particularly liked Tarkin’s muzzling of Krennic’s ambition, K-2SO’s wittiness, Baze and Chirrut’s skill at arms, but by far the best was Vader’s sabresalivating return! The last thirty minutes is undoubtedly the most mind-blowing part! Oh! By the way, no Bothans died in the process of making this review! Rogue One gets four Tie Fighters out of five from me! May the force be with you…
