Enforcement camera goes live on A38 bus lane at Aztec West

Libraries’ summer reading challenge

S

outh Gloucestershire Council has installed a fixed bus lane enforcement camera on the northbound Gloucester Road (A38) approach to the Aztec West Roundabout and began issuing penalty charge notices from 21st June.

The camera actually went live on 7th June, but the authority chose to only issue warning notices (letters) during the first fortnight of its operation.

In line with the hours of operation of the bus lane, the new camera operates Monday to Friday only, 7.30am-9.30am and 4pm-7pm.

The monitoring system uses automatic number plate recognition to identify unauthorised vehicles and generate penalty notices.

The council says that all potential infringements will be

reviewed by a qualified officer and if any mitigating factors, such as needing to pull over for an emergency vehicle, are present, they will not issue a penalty notice.

Elsewhere in South Glos, bus lane enforcement cameras are

already in operation at Highwood Road in Patchway and New Road/ Brierly Furlong in Stoke Gifford (both operating for 24hrs a day).

The A38 bus lane was created in 2011 as part of the £70m Greater Bristol Bus Network (GBBN) project.

‘The Big Friendly Read’ Summer Reading Challenge 2016 begins in all South Gloucestershire libraries on 16th July and runs until 10th September. It’s fun, it’s friendly and best of all, it’s totally FREE. All children have to do is read six library books over the summer, collecting special Big Friendly Read collector cards from some of Roald Dahl’s bestloved stories along the way, to get their medal and certificate.

It is very important to pay tribute and to highlight the impact Filton has had historically on the global aerospace industry.

But more vital is inspiring the next generation of engineers and scientists in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning centre which is part of this project, so we can maintain the UK’s place in the world aerospace industry, protect and improve our sovereign manufacturing capability and to increase further social mobility.”

Schools Meadowbrook recognised for first class sport provision through Gold Award

M

eadowbrook Primary School in Bradley Stoke has been recognised for its exceptional school sport provision by the School Games programme. School Games encourages young people by getting them involved with school sport. The Mark Award has been running since 2012 and recognises schools for their commitment to sports in school.

The School Games is all about being the best you can be. To help with this, there are a set of values developed by young people called the Spirit of the Games.

These values are self belief, honesty, teamwork, respect, determination and passion.

In order to provide more competitive sporting opportunities, a key focus is to give more young people responsibility within sport.

Whether it is as a player, reporter or referee, the School Games provide an excellent opportunity for all young people to make a positive and active contribution to their school. The School Games is open to everyone whether they see themselves as ‘sporty’ or not.

In term 6, the ‘whole school’ learning arc has been designated “Meadowbrook Athletes’ Village”.

This is the final celebration of a year when the school has focused on physical education and personal and social education.

The term began with an inspirational assembly led by the school’s sports coach Debbie Benjamin, followed by two sports days which she organised.

Tuesday 14th June saw Doug McLaughlin-Williams from Bristol Flyers come in to work with Year 3. He spoke to classes, emphasising that talent is the result of practice and hard work!

Miss Benjamin commented: “Pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the huge range of sporting opportunities this year. It confirms our commitment to every child in our care to enjoy a wide range of sport, in teams and as individuals – competitively and for fun! As well as an opportunity for more young people to actively engage in competitive sport, the School Games can provide a catalyst for a wider impact across the curriculum.”

MetroBus construction: Progress in June

I

am pleased to report that the left turn from Woodlands lane into Bradley Stoke Way was reopened on 31st May. This has helped alleviate some of the traffic issues, and rather than drive around Pear Tree Road, it is easier for many to turn left and go around Patchway Brook Roundabout to return up to Aztec West.

Discussions with Bristol Water have informed Griffiths that their works on the diversion of the water main will be completed by the end of July, enabling Griffiths to finish the Woodlands Lane junction completely to all traffic.

There are still works to complete on the southern verge (dependent on Bristol Water) and the central reservation prior to the road being surfaced, signals installed/commissioned and traffic loops cut.

The junction cannot be reopened in a temporary state, as the junction signals needs to communicate with the signals on the Aztec West roundabout.

This can’t be done with temporary signals. Without this communication, there would be no control over the traffic signal interface, which would have serious effect on the traffic to the A38, Bradley Stoke Way and the M5.

The Woodlands Lane junction is now anticipated to be fully opened in November.

We are currently working

in accordance with phasing plan 4.1, but have also recently completed additional work on the splitter island at the Woodlands Lane junction.

Griffiths has been granted extended working hours from the planning department of the South Gloucestershire Council. Where the construction programme will benefit, we will make use of these extended working hours to expedite the delivery of critical areas of the construction. These hours are likely to take more effect when Bristol Water have completed their work.

We have had council consent to extend our work ahead of schedule further along Bradley Stoke Way to mitigate the delay in Woodlands Lane and utilise resources.

The newts have been relocated, which has enabled us to progress along the eastbound verge of Bradley Stoke Way heading towards the Willow Brook Centre. These works will be completed prior to commencing on the westbound verge around September. Two-way traffic will be maintained throughout.

Great Stoke Way is complete, apart from the final surfacing works. The timescale for this is dependent on agreement of traffic management with South Gloucestershire Council, but is currently programmed for August. This will only be up to one week’s work.

Letters and Opinions Our shopping centre needs more colour!

My wife and I do our shopping as often as we can at Yate town centre. There is a very good reason for this, as apart from the much better choice of shops, it’s the flowers – there are hanging baskets throughout the centre (see photo above).

As you walk through the

precinct, you are greeted by these huge hanging baskets and they grow into beautiful displays over the summer. With the many seats around, it’s nice to sit and admire them.

Every summer, Yate also brings the seaside to the centre, with a huge raised sandpit for the children, with deckchairs surrounding, for the parents and public. On the whole, you take more time with your shopping as it’s a pleasure to be there.

Now, as the tenor on the ‘telly’ sings, “go compare” - and what a contrast we have at the Willow Brook Centre. If you fancy a coffee, sat out here, what do you see? Apart from a few plant troughs with very little colour, just a mass of plain concrete. We have lampposts with brackets crying out for hanging baskets to give us some colour, but where are they?

No doubt if the council were approached on this, they would say there isn’t the money, which might be true as the money

is already spent on our South Gloucestershire neighbours, Yate.

News Bradley Stoke Tesco Extra staff raise funds for the ‘Kisses for Kaylum’ appeal

taff at the Tesco Extra store in Bradley Stoke have taken part in a special fundraising initiative that will contribute towards the cost of potentially life-saving treatment for a fiveyear-old Bristol boy who suffers from a rare form of cancer.

Kaylum Ryan’s family is desperately trying to raise £280,000 so they can take him to America for a pioneering treatment for neuroblastoma, which is not available on the NHS. Kaylum was diagnosed with the condition in July 2013 and since then has undergone chemotherapy and had several operations. He went into remission in October 2014, but nine months later his cancer

returned and his parents have been told that the chance of a cure is very slim, leading them to seek a different type of treatment abroad.

On the weekend of 18th June, staff at Tesco stores across Bristol helped bolster the ‘Kisses for Kaylum’ fund by walking from store to store with a trolley and by arranging in-store moneyraising activities.

Staff at the Bradley Stoke Tesco Extra store played their part by holding a raffle and offering shoppers the chance to throw wet sponges at store mangers held in a set of stocks.

Green Gym celebrates tenth anniversary

T

he wet weather has continued to cause issues on the reserve, although, ironically, it has yet to fill our ‘new’ pond in Bowsland Meadow and, at the other end of the reserve, much of the bottom of the lake is visible. When you can see a seagull standing in the middle of the lake, you know it’s time to consider having it de-silted again.

Or maybe we just have a seagull with very, very long legs!

Swans and cygnets

Despite all of the problems we had last month, our swans Bradley and Brooke managed to hatch two cygnets and they have continued to thrive, so we are hoping that for the first time we will be able to get them ringed. This isn’t something we could do by ourselves, as we don’t have the equipment or the experience, but we are hoping that Ed Drewitt will take a short break from being a naturalist, broadcaster, tour guide, wildlife detective and author of ‘Urban Peregrines’ to show us how it’s

done. We have had to remove the ramp we made for the cygnets to climb back up from the weir, as some thought it ‘fun’ to throw it in the water on a daily basis, but we have cut back the vegetation so that they can now walk up the bank instead.

Our workdays are always the first Saturday of the month, starting at 10am behind the leisure centre. No previous experience is necessary, but please wear suitable clothing and bring your own lunch, although we provide the essential tea and biscuits!

Green Gym anniversary

Our ‘Green Gym’ has turned ten years old and we celebrated in style at the home of the TBNCG’s chair David Baker and his wife Hilary. Although we had a few showers, we had a hugely enjoyable afternoon and were delighted that Jenny Darwin, who founded the group with BTCV (British Trust of Conservation Volunteers), came along to join us. Green Gym was a concept developed by Oxford GP Dr William Bird, who thought that people would benefit both mentally and physically by getting

some exercise while taking part in worthwhile tasks. The first Green Gym started in 1997 and within ten years there were 55 projects running with an estimated 6,000 people taking part.

Our Green Gym has 19 members and, although not everyone can make it every week, we have achieved an enormous amount of work. In 2015, we volunteered over 1,858 hours (valued at £25,896) which was more than the Saturday group, not that I’m counting of course!

But it’s not bad for a group whose average age is 58, compared to TBNCG’s 49. In 2008, BTCV were no longer able to support us with Jenny, their paid support leader, so Quentin Nichols, David Baker and myself took on the role of joint volunteer leaders and we have gone from strength to strength ever since. We run entirely unsupported financially, although our members are at least insured as, at no extra cost to them, we piggy back onto the main group’s insurance.

Green Gym, unlike the Saturday group, is not limited to just working on the reserve, and so far this year we’ve also helped out Winterbourne Conservation Group and Bradley Stoke in Bloom, spent some time at Parkway North and also cleared and replanted the pond in Dewfalls Drive.

We are a very sociable group, who enjoy each other’s company while doing something useful.

You don’t have to be young, or physically fit, as the premise of Green Gym is that you do what you can and then stop for tea!

If you would like to come and join us, we meet behind the leisure centre every Thursday 10am to 1pm. Whether it’s just for the chance to get out of the house for a while, or to make new friends, to complete a few hours volunteering before you head off to university or you have an avid interest in wildlife or conservation, you would be most welcome to come and join us.

Filton Airfield site to act as base for railway electrification project ‘Orange army’ of around 500 workers will be bussed out daily to tunnel sites

N

etwork Rail has announced that it is to set up a temporary compound on the Filton Airfield site, in support of its project to prepare the 130-year-old Patchway and Severn tunnels for the arrival of a new fleet of longer, faster, quieter and greener electric trains.

The compound, adjacent to the A38 Gloucester Road, will provide a parking area for the approximately 500 workers assigned to the project, who will work in shifts and travel by minibus to access the track at Patchway and Pilning stations.

It will also provide a base for working on sections of new track before they are transported to the tunnels.

Around 30 management staff will be based at the compound and up to 200 workers will arrive and leave per shift (6am, 2pm and midnight).

Work on setting up the compound at Filton Airfield was expected to get under way as we went to press (late June), with the delivery of sleepers and rails commencing shortly after.

Workers and delivery lorries will access the site via the airfield main access gate, off the A38.

Wherever possible, deliveries will be planned to avoid the start and end times of shifts at the nearby Rolls-Royce and Airbus sites.

Pre-assembled track panels will be transported from Filton Airfield to the railway access points in the evenings, after

8pm. Local residents are advised that temporary congestion may occur on Station Road in Little Stoke as HGVs travel to and from the Network Rail compound at Patchway Station.

The upgrades required to prepare both tunnels for electrification are extensive and will involve installing conductor beams to power the new fleet of electric trains to run underneath.

To install this beam in the Severn tunnel, four tonnes of soot needs to be removed and extensive improvements made to the brick work.

In addition, to accommodate the electrification equipment, the track will be lowered in one of the Patchway tunnels and underneath the nearby Little Stoke Farm

bridge (on Station Road, near the Sort It centre), to preserve its historical architecture.

The scale of this engineering challenge together with the type of machinery required to carry out the work means that a temporary closure of both tunnels is unavoidable. This temporary closure will take place over six weeks, from 12th September to 21st October 2016.

Throughout the work, train services to and from South Wales will still be running, but some journeys will take longer and on some routes replacement bus services will be in operation.

Their vision is a future where no one in the UK loses their life to meningitis and everyone affected gets the support they need to rebuild their lives. 2016 will see the installation of a 20-tonne sand sculpture, sponsored

by B & A Group, with the

design to be decided through a soon-to-be-announced social media competition, all in aid of Meningitis Now. One lucky person will also get the opportunity to destroy the sculpture at the end of the weekend. Raffle tickets will be available at the show, with all profits going to Meningitis Now. Certainly the show wouldn’t be anything without the fantastic array of exhibitors. From the delicious Festival of Food to the talents in the Arts and Crafts marquee, there is a something to delight everyone. With more exhibitors than ever before, you can take some time to enjoy some retail therapy.

Keep the kids entertained in the Kids’ Zone – the classics never disappoint and the Punch and Judy shows will return for 2016. Whilst they’re occupied, why not visit the new Beer Festival and Brewery Competition? Five local brewers go head to head to be crowned ‘Best Bitter’, ‘Best IPA’ and the ultimate ‘Best in Show’.

We now have hundreds more CPRtrained lifesavers in north Bristol!

T

he north Bristol area now has 249 more people trained in life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), thanks to an initiative organised by Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS) with support from the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

Back in April, BSCS successfully completed a bid to become a designated CPR training school and was given over 30 sets of resuscitation training equipment by the BHF. As part of the project, the school took part in a national ‘Mission: CPR’ day on Wednesday 22nd June, training its entire Year 7 year group, along with a sample of Year 10s and Post-16 students, in CPR techniques.

The training was carried out by a small group of Post-16 students, who themselves received instruction from BHF volunteer Katherine Robinson, who lives locally in Bradley Stoke.

Andy Marshall, head of science at BSCS, who organised the training said: “This was an

amazing day, to see so many young people actively being involved in learning CPR and basic life-saving techniques – an absolutely invaluable life skill.

udding electricians have a new local place to learn their craft as a training centre has opened its doors in Bradley Stoke.

DCET Training recently held an open day for apprentices, businesses and schools to mark the launch of its new training centre at Eagles Wood Business Park (off Woodlands Lane).

Representatives from South Gloucestershire Council and the Local Enterprise Partnership also attended.

The firm, which is part of the Focus Training (SW) Group, started in Devon and Cornwall more than two decades ago and provides specialist electrical training for apprentices and those already within the electrical industry.

DCET Training has made its base at the former Autoglass building, following extensive refurbishment of the property.

Michelle Moylan, centre manager, told us: “As the leading specialist, we opened in Bristol as we felt there is a skills gap in the local market for electrical training which wasn’t being filled sufficiently.”

The training centre was officially opened by Tony Cable from the NICEIC (and expert on the BBC’s Rogue Traders).

The centre is already training over forty apprentices and, since moving into Bristol, the organisation has provided up-skill training to nearly a hundred electricians on courses such as the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations, test & inspection and PAT testing.

The centre has recently hosted a separate visit from Jack Lopresti, MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke, as he was unable to attend the open day due to parliamentary duties. Mr Lopresti was very interested to

look around the facility and offer his support. As an apprenticeship champion, Mr Lopresti is backing the national campaign to increase participation to three million apprentices by 2020.

Station Road to close for up to six months • Footway damaged by landslip to be repaired • No through access for motor vehicles • All local businesses will remain open

A

250m-long section of Station Road, in Little Stoke, is to be closed to through traffic for up to six months to facilitate the repair of a stretch of footway that has slipped into the adjacent brook.

The footway, just north of Patchway Station and opposite the Patchway Building Supplies compound, has been out of use for more than three years, and during this time has been fenced off with orange plastic barriers.

The work, which is expected to commence on Monday 11th July, is to be carried out by Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, working on behalf of South Gloucestershire Council. This is

the same firm that is currently undertaking the construction of the MetroBus project in Bradley Stoke and the Stoke Gifford Transport Link.

In a letter sent to businesses and residential properties in the immediate vicinity of the work, Griffiths state that the work will involve the construction of a ‘bored pile’ retaining wall over a length of 100m, along with the construction of a new footpath and carriageway reinstatement.

Jim Aitken, community liaison officer for Griffiths, writes in the letter: “Unfortunately, in order for these works to be carried out it will be necessary for a road closure with vehicular diversion

to be implemented for the duration of the works.”

The road closure extends from a point just south of the entrance to the Sort It civic amenity site to a point just north of Patchway Station. The 100m work area is located towards the railway station end of the closed section.

Businesses in the area will be open as usual and there will be signs to emphasise this, but there will be no through access for traffic. Consequently, traffic heading for the Riverside Leisure Club and the Sort It centre must approach from the north, while Patchway Station will be reachable only from the south.

Station Road will be maintained, albeit locally diverted around the immediate work area.

News MetroBus contractors Alun Griffiths help town council with groundworks

lun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, building the MetroBus North Fringe to Hengrove Package, have recently helped Bradley Stoke Town Council (BSTC) at the new skate park within the grounds of the leisure centre. As part of the Griffiths community benefits initiative, and throughout the contract, the company works with and supports local community groups and provides assistance to local regeneration projects. This may include project volunteering days, provision of resources and materials, and fundraising.

Griffiths have transported three large boulders from Bradley

Stoke Way to the area of the leisure centre and skate park for the town council and provided resources and equipment to landscape and re-seed the area surrounding the skate park.

A BSTC spokesperson said: “Bradley Stoke Town Council is extremely appreciative of the recent contribution, from Alun Griffiths (local MetroBus contractors) to the landscaping of the new Bradley Stoke skate park. They have rotavated, top-soiled and seeded the earth surrounding the new park and, hopefully, we will soon have a mixture of wildflower borders and grass banks that park users and spectators can enjoy.”

Bowls club charity day marks the Queen’s 90th

By Arthur Allen of Bradley Stoke Bowls Club n Sunday 12th June, Bradley Stoke Bowls Club held their annual charity event, this year to support the local West of England MS Therapy Centre (MSTC), based in Wheatfield Drive.

With the event coinciding with the main weekend of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations, many members chose to wear red, white and blue to mark the royal anniversary.

Graced by the presence of the town mayor, Cllr Elaine Hardwick, her husband Paul and granddaughter Honey, and supported by Emma Samson from the MSTC, events proceeded like clockwork.

Following coffee, and in spite of the damp weather, there followed a short bowling competition for about 50 participants, which was won by Bob Wilkins and Jan Preston.

Next on the bill was an excellent lunch, catered for by Steve Metcaffe (a member of Henleaze Bowling Club), during which the loyal toast was proposed by club president Bill Plank.

The afternoon programme of typical fun bowling games, got off to a good start with a lusty rendering of “Land of Hope and Glory”, led by the newlyformed Bradley Stoke Bowling Ladies Choir! A few kind words from the mayor, and a sunnyfaced sky, spurred the members to attempt unusual bowling

by Pauline Dent and Doreen Pope, spiced with some royal cerebral challenges concocted by quizmaster Brian Newman.

Throughout the day, funds were raised from a tombola, organized by Jean Overton, and a raffle, largely organized in absentia by Pat Wilkins. We thank all those companies in the area who donated generously to the raffle and tombola and all

members who supported the day with their time, gifts of prizes and, most importantly, the giving of money to our chosen charity for this year.

The club vice-captains Steve Woodruff, Dave Beedell, Dave Sage, Tony Carter, John Pope, Pauline Dent, Dorothy Pope and Bob Wilkins are to be congratulated; especially Bob Wilkins who acted as MC and captain of the day. In a short word of thanks, Bob paid tribute to the tremendous assistance of all helpers, especially last year’s captain George Eland.

A sum of £668 has been raised so far, with expectation of some additions to come. The final cheque will be presented at our

AGM in October.

s reported in our June magazine, the local community came together at the Hilton Bristol Hotel on 20th May to honour the finalists in the first-ever Stars of the Stokes event, organised to recognise local people who have shown outstanding community engagement or personal achievement.

Almost a hundred nominations were made and, after some tough judging, eighteen were chosen to either win their category or to be

VICTORIA nominated her father, Nigel Parsons, for building his life despite having a congenital heart problem. Nigel was diagnosed as terminally ill in his 40s, but in 2009 a match was found for him to have an organ transplant.

Since 2010, he has had a relatively stable period of health but Victoria wanted to show her appreciation for the way in which he has continued with his life, going on to volunteer at St Peter’s Hospice. He received his Five Year Award for this, and due to his determination over the years, he has received the community’s recognition for Achievement

Against the Odds.

Victoria said of The Stars of the Stokes Award: “It was a pleasure to attend the ceremony and watch all the worthy nominees receive their awards. I am very proud of my Dad for his achievements. Thanks to all the sponsors for recognising the good in our community.”

Nigel said, on receiving his award: “Although I am thankful for the nomination and award, I accepted this on behalf of the heart donor and their family in remembrance of their gift, as without that, this would not have been possible.”

Festival Report Bradley Stoke Youth FC Festival of Football

T

he top pitch area at the Jubilee Centre on Saturday 4th June was host to the annual Bradley Stoke Youth FC (BSYFC) Festival of Football. This was the tenth anniversary of the BSYFC festival and is the final stage of the Club School Link Program, where the club coaches have been going into 14 local primary schools providing in-school football coaching to all Year 1 classes. In 2016, the club has coached 720 Year 1 children over the period from February to May. All these schools are then invited enter a team into the football festival, resulting in 140 Year 1 children taking part on the day.

Over the scheme’s ten year history, BSYFC coaches have coached a grand total of over 5,100 Year 1 children in their schools and the football festival has seen over 1,400 Year 1 children take part. All of this is provided free of charge to the schools and the children.

This successful event has been supported every year by

McDonald’s, Bradley Stoke Town Council, Bradley Stoke Youth FC and the Gloucestershire FA. The football festival is a fun event and each school is awarded points for various categories when the coaches go into the schools. This year, every child participating in the festival received a goody bag, medal, swim bag, GFA baseball cap, shin pads, football socks, sports bottle, drawing/painting set and, of course, sweets. Every school also received a McDonald’s coaching set with footballs, a cup (of varying sizes) and a team photograph of their squad.

The cups for the teachers’ awards this year went to Iron Acton and Almondsbury. The top three schools also won football bibs and training cones, and the top team won a full McDonald’s football kit for their school.

field of 548 runners contested the Bradley Stoke 10k, organised by Sole Sisters on Sunday 5th June – the final day of the 2016 Bradley Stoke Community Festival.

Entries for the popular event, which has its start and finish at the Jubilee Centre, had sold out on 31st March, more than two months ahead of raceday.

Local residents turned out in force on a bright and warm morning to support the runners as they followed the multi-terrain route along the pavements and tracks of Bradley Stoke.

Victory in the men’s race went to Maciej Bialogonski (Bristol & West AC), in a time of 34:11, comfortably clear of 2015 winner Ciaran McQuade (North Bristol Running Group, 34:42) in second place, followed by local youngster Adam Wilson (Yate AC, 35:04) in third.

McQuade’s performance also secured the special prize for the top-finishing Bradley Stoke resident.

First home in the women’s race, and seventh overall, was Helen Newberry (Bristol & West AC) in a time of 37:19, almost two minutes ahead of second-placed Rebecca Awde (Bristol & West AC, 39:07) with Elizabeth Smith (Westbury Harriers, 41:29) in third.

Karen Gaman of Sole Sisters says the club received a lot of very positive feedback about this year’s race. Particular praise was given for the 70 marshals who turned up bright and early on the morning, the Girl Guides at the water stations with their music and enthusiasm, Terry the Tornado for the warm-up routine and the pace-runners, which were a new feature this year. ● More at http://bit.ly/bs10k

Young people get involved with festival Graham Baker, Bradley Stoke Town Council’s Youth Development & Participation Worker writes: We had two days of extremely well-attended activities with young people again actively contributing to the planning, promotion and voluntary staffing of activities over the festival weekend.

On the Saturday, we brought a skate half-pipe to the main festival site with ‘have a go’ sessions and pro-rider demos.

Alongside, we had street art workshops with over 50 young people leaving with their own

art works or having contributed to larger collective pieces of art.

In addition, we spent much time discussing and promoting other projects with young people and parents/carers.

On the Sunday, the half-pipe moved to the new skate park site to provide additional capacity alongside more pro-rider demos, skate competitions, circus skills workshops, all with a musical backdrop provided by young people with equipment loaned by BSR. Significant funding for the two days was secured through a community grant and support in kind again from local skate park businesses.

Festival Report Bradley Stoke Cricket Club marks 25th anniversary with celebrity game and fun day

T

he Sunday of the festival weekend (5th June) incorporated a special event at Baileys Court to mark the 25th anniversary of Bradley Stoke Cricket Club.

The day included many attractions, the main one being a visit from Jack Russell MBE, the former England and Gloucestershire wicketkeeper.

Jack is a very talented artist and there was an exhibition of some of his paintings, sketches and books on display. He also made himself available to sign autographs and pose for photographs and always had time to talk to everyone who came on the day.

The Club held a prize draw which included six fantastic prizes, including three of Jack’s works of art, a signed cricket bat by the Australian cricket team that toured in England in 2005. There was also another cricket bat and a family ticket to a Gloucestershire Twenty20 match.

Other attractions on the day included a demonstration of ‘kwik cricket’ from some of the youngsters in the club and a Twenty20 match involving Bradley Stoke Cricket Club versus

a celebrity team that included former footballers Scott Murray, Alex Russell, Lewis Carey, David Meyhew, and from rugby, Sean Marsden – all of whom helped the celebrity XI win the match.

The weather was absolutely fantastic and it is estimated that over 300 people were present on the day, many of whom stayed until the celebrity match had finished. ● www.bradleystokecc.co.uk

Academy trust given green light for expansion

Local community choir’s summer recruitment drive

The Olympus Academy Trust has announced that it has received approval from the Regional Schools Commissioner’s office for Callicroft, Filton Hill and Stoke Lodge Primary Schools to join the trust in September 2016.

In a recent newsletter, Dave Baker, executive headteacher, wrote: “It will be challenging to complete all the planning and preparation to enable this to happen, but we will do our utmost to complete the transition for the start of the school year. We will share details in future newsletters about what the implications will be for our leadership and governance structures in order to ensure the growth has positive impact across the trust.�

Susan Martin writes: Local community choir Stokes Singers are recruiting new singers over the summer months to boost their numbers, in particular for their bass/tenor/baritone sections. There is also space for a few more altos and sopranos.

Rehearsals for the annual Christmas Concert commence in September and it is hoped that this recruitment initiative will bring new people into our friendly group.

We welcome singers of all levels, including beginners, so if you’re a bit nervous, don’t worry, because you learn as a group to get the right notes during rehearsals.

The choir, at present about 35 strong, meets at 7.30pm every Thursday at Coniston Community Centre, Patchway.

BSYFC scoop two prestigious FA awards

T

he FA Charter Standard Community Awards Ceremony 2016 were held at the Gloucestershire FA, Oaklands Park on 22nd June, hosted by David Neale GFA Chief Executive and Roger Burden, FA vice-chairman and chair of the National Game Board.

Bradley Stoke Youth FC (BSYFC) were finalists in two categories: FA Charter Standard Community Club of the Year and, with Matt Smith, for Young Coach of the Year. The club were delighted to be presented on the night as winners of both the categories.

The club award highlights the extensive work the club performs in the local community, including the School Link Program with 14 local schools for Year 1 children, the annual Football Festival for the local schools, which celebrated its tenth anniversary in June, the Enrichment Program with Bradley Stoke Community School (and now the new primary phase), the range of age groups the club covers (from U5 upwards), its dedication to the development of girls’ football, the provision of free disability football sessions and the newly formed ladies’ team.

Matt Smith was declared the winner of his category for his coaching of the U5, U6, U7, U14 girls’ and ladies’ teams, School Link work, Enrichment coaching sessions and the disability football sessions.

The club achieved FA Charter Standard Community status back in May 2010 and have now won

They have also won the Young Coach of the Year Award three times and been runners up once.

This highlights the strength of their young coach mentoring program that has been running for many years now.

Scouts join thousands at county jamboree

Y

ou may remember that during last year’s May bank holiday, members of the 1st Bradley Stoke Scouts attended the district jamboree.

This year they were at the Avon county jamboree with 4,200 young people from Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, the Guiding community and all their supporting adult volunteers.

Together they took part in activities across four themes – skill, adventure, world and outdoor – and climbed, caved, got wet, cooked food, fished, got muddy, made things, completed a colour run, stayed up late, took part in archery and air rifle shooting, learnt how to skin a rabbit, got up early, kayaked, jumped on bouncy castles, played human table football and pretty much didn’t sleep for four days.

Most importantly, they had fun and challenged themselves.

One hundred and five young people from all age groups attended, with some camping throughout and others attending just for a day. And supporting them, another 30 adult volunteers did the same.

The weather on the Friday evening was awful, with torrential rain turning the fields to mud. But food cooked by the Royal Marines made everyone feel better, and whilst everyone made a bee line for their tents, they also stayed up into the early hours. A camp wakes early and by 4.30am, everyone was up!

Over the rest of the long weekend, the weather improved, fields and people dried out and everyone had fun. There was even a flying visit (literally – in a

helicopter) from the Chief Scout, Bear Grylls, which lifted spirits.

At the end of the camp, everyone helped drop the tents, pack everything away and take part in the closing ceremony.

Then there were some tired young people – and quite a lot of tired adults – going home to hot showers and soft beds.

Through the camera lens by Becky Ward

Y

ou may have noticed the ‘through the camera lens’ column missing over the last few months, so I wanted to use my column this month to explain where I’ve been. Cast your mind back to a few months ago, I wrote about meeting the Avon Owls sanctuary when they came to the Bradley Stoke Radio studios. In my final semester of studying, I wanted to photograph something different, something that has long been a passion of mine. Having already photographed our community and its many events, I wanted to choose something else that was just as important to me, and owls have been something I’ve loved for my entire life. I was fortunate to be allowed to follow the Avon Owls sanctuary and photographically documented their work throughout the last few months.

When photographing at the sanctuary, I wanted to take the

opportunity to document the good work that they do as well as the animals themselves. I took pictures at their open day at the centre as I wanted to capture the interaction between the birds and the visitors. I then spent some time photographing the owls both in and out of their aviaries.

As part of my final project, my fellow students and I put together an exhibition in central Bristol, showcasing the work we had undertaken over the previous six months. I only had room to put four of my favourite images on the wall, but I loved so many of the photographs and didn’t feel that four images told the story of such an amazing voluntary organisation, so as part of my final project I also decided to make a book to sell at the exhibition and on my website.

expect this, so it was such an amazing surprise to hear that my peers on my course and within the industry had connected with the project as much as I did.

The last few months following the Avon Owls team, putting together my book and my first exhibition has been amazing!

I’ve learnt so much and have really enjoyed the entire project from start to finish. My

passion for photography, which started as a hobby but has now become my career, is wholly due to my involvement in the amazing community that exists within Bradley Stoke, the many wonderful and varied events and its diverse cultures. Without all of the opportunities afforded to me by our wonderful town and its residents, who knows what I would be doing today!

Three MetroBus bridges installed

No fewer than three new bridges associated with the North Fringe to Hengrove Package MetroBus scheme have been installed since our June magazine was delivered.

The weekend of 28th/29th May saw the installation of a new road-over-rail bridge (photos 1

& 2) on the route of the Stoke Gifford Transport Link, which, when it opens next year, will provide a quicker route for buses and general traffic between Bradley Stoke and the Ring Road (near junction 1 of the M32).

This was followed on 10th-12th

June by a new bridge going in over the M32 (photo 3), for a new bus-only junction that will be accessed from Stoke Lane.

Finally, a replacement for the Church Lane bridge over the Ring Road (photo 4) was installed on the weekend of 17th-20th June.

Jim Aitken of Alun Griffiths Ltd reports on the progress being made on the SGTL (known locally as the Stoke Gifford By-Pass): Bristol Water have completed their work in the area of Hambrook Lane and it is now on programme to be reopened in July.

Works are ongoing to commence on tie-in with the SGTL on A4174. Initially we have closed the 2+ bus lane eastbound from Cold Harbour Junction toward the M32 Junction 1 to enable the new road construction, for approximately eight weeks.

Once completed, we shall then install traffic management on the west bound section of the A4174 from M32 Junction 1 to Cold Harbour Lane to complete the second side, again closing the 2+ lane and then moving into the central reserve area for approximately six weeks.

We hope to remove all traffic management on the A4174 by 16th September, having completed the work in hand.

Surfacing within main SGTL site is 60 percent complete, awaiting bridges to be handed over by Network Rail to enable earthworks to recommence.

Griffiths are soon to commence footways and traffic signal junctions at A4174 Maules Lane and Hambrook.

Bristol Parkway railway bridge improvements A scheme to provide a bespoke subway through the railway embankment for pedestrians and cyclists at the Brierly Furlong railway bridge near Parkway Station is being considered for support by the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership, as part of a bid it will make to the government’s Local Growth Fund.

Initial design of the scheme is being carried out by Network Rail on behalf of South Gloucestershire Council. The total project cost is currently estimated to be approximately £11m (current prices), for opening in 2021.

‘In Bloom’ group busy on June workday

W

hat we lacked in numbers on our June workday, we made up for in other ways. We spent the morning at the Willow Brook Centre, tending our planters in the town square. Our heuchera planter is doing well, now all the vine weevil larvae have been removed, and another two benefited from a much needed trim, while the smell lifting up from our herb planter was, well, uplifting! All the herbs are growing well, apart from the cardoon, also known as an artichoke thistle. They’re known for being a very showy herb but we seem to have bought the only shy one in Bristol. Hopefully, this will be the year it decides to grow!

Our favourite planter it would seem is the ‘kitchen garden’,

as we spent as much time chatting as we did planting, with recipes being exchanged, advice being sought, memories of granddad’s rhubarb patch shared and listening to the younger gardeners telling us what they’re growing at home (strawberries mainly, but it’s always a good place to start). Everything in this planter is edible, from the pansies to the peas, so please come and take a look at what we have crammed in. We also have rhubarb, garlic, onions, mint, rosemary, sugar snap peas, strawberries, peppers, tomatoes and even a potato!

After lunch, we tidied up the faded daffodils and bluebells we had planted alongside the pedestrian crossing on Bradley Stoke Way and removed as much

bramble as we could, before going onto the rose garden behind the doctors’ surgery on Brook Way and giving our candy stripe carpet a good clean. This carpet has done a grand job of keeping the weeds down as the other garden area was already knee deep in goose grass which, I was told, is more commonly known here as ‘cleavers’ or ‘kiss the girls’! We also gave a good clearout to our community herb garden (the four planters in front of the Brook Way Activity Centre). Again, these herbs are there for you to pick what you want, so please don’t feel shy about helping yourselves.

It was already after 4pm before we nipped over to The Common East to check on our work there.

Everything seems well and we enjoyed a well deserved sit down on one of our new seats. The plastic male duck has for the time being been removed as the live one didn’t appreciate a ‘rival’ on his patch, but apart from him, the pond is brimming with new life and for the first time to my

knowledge, we discovered two female newts in the pond. The local residents need not worry yet, as they weren’t protected great crested newts but common smooth newts, although we were still very excited by their arrival.

We’d also like to say ‘thank you’ to Wayne and to Mr & Mrs Silcocks, who have all recently donated tools to us; we’re very grateful that you thought of us first.

We were sorry to learn that Margaret Howdle, who has supported us from the beginning, is not feeling up to entering this year and wish her a speedy recovery. Following discussion with SGC, the proposed assembly, briefing and finish area is the grass area adjacent to the bottom of Concorde Way, to avoid obstruction to other path users or disturbance to residents.

Saturday run (5km) starting at 9am Runners will be walked to the start (close to ‘a’) and set off towards Brook Way where they turn (at ‘b’). On return to point ‘a’ they run out on Concorde Way (turning at ‘c’ before reaching the point where paths cross) and back to point ‘a’. They then turn east towards the Pond (at ‘d’) and continue on the wide main path to point ‘e’ where they turn and run the length of the path to Brook Way (at ’b’). Three Brooks parkrun route map revealed

D

etails of an application made by local representatives of parkrun UK to hold two weekly running events in Bradley Stoke’s Three Brooks Local Nature Reserve were published on the town council’s website during June, allowing the public sight of the proposals for the first time since the nature reserve was first put forward as an alternative venue for the underthreat Little Stoke parkrun.

The need for parkrun to find an alternative venue for its Saturday morning event has become more pressing in recent weeks following Stoke Gifford Parish Council’s decision to withdraw permission for the use of Little Stoke Park after 28th May because parkrun refused to make a financial contribution to the park’s upkeep.

The application has been made to South Gloucestershire Council (SGC), which owns the nature reserve and will make the final decision on whether or not to grant permission, but the town council, along with other interested parties, was invited to submit comments.

Consultation on the application was originally due to end on 20th June, but was extended so that the town council could discuss the matter at its scheduled meeting on Wednesday 22nd June.

In its application, parkrun UK says it seeks “shared use of the course”, with runners being instructed to “respect other park users and give way if necessary”.

A 5km timed run for adults would take place at 9am every Saturday, with a 2km run for children being held at 9am on Sundays. If attracting similar numbers to the Little Stoke parkrun, the Saturday event might be expected to see as many as 300 runners using the nature reserve over a period of up to around 45-minutes.

Both runs would start on the path beneath the bridge where Bradley Stoke Way crosses

over the Stoke Brook and finish nearby on the path that leads down into the nature reserve on the north-east side of Bradley Stoke Way. The routes would see participants running in both directions along the path between Brook Way and the ‘duck pond’, with the adult runners additionally using the path between the ‘duck pond’ and a point just short of the footbridge behind Bradley Stoke Community School.

The application states that parkrunners are encouraged to walk, jog, cycle or take public transport to events, or car share where possible. Those driving to Bradley Stoke parkrun will be directed to the Willow Brook shopping centre, with the agreement of the centre management. Participants will be asked not to use the leisure centre car park or residential streets for parking.

When the application was previously discussed by the town council at its AGM on 11th May, many councillors were less than enthusiastic, expressing concerns about the runners potentially damaging paths in the nature reserve and causing a hazard for other users. The meeting resolved that a video/photographic record of the route should be carried out to assess the state of the paths before the first run takes place and then again after six months.

The 22nd June meeting resolved to request (again) that SGC carry out a widespread consultation with the residents of Bradley Stoke (on a postcode basis) before any final decision is made. Councillors also expressed concerns about car parking in residential streets and requested that the final decision be made by elected SGC councillors rather than officers.

The Journal understands that should permission be granted, the parkrun could start as soon as two weeks after the decision.

Police Police helicopter deployed in vehicle pursuit that ended in Bradley Stoke

T

he deployment of the police helicopter over Bradley Stoke for around half-an-hour on the evening of Wednesday 8th June was connected with a vehicle pursuit which had started nearly two hours earlier in Thornbury.

The helicopter was first seen circling over the The Common East area of Bradley Stoke at around 9pm, before gradually moving down to the south of the town, where it hovered over the Webbs Wood Road area until shortly after 9.30pm.

More than 70 comments regarding the incident were made on the Bradley Stoke Journal’s Facebook page, with several readers reporting sightings of police cars and ambulances in south Bradley Stoke. Several comments referred to police cars being present in Palmers Leaze and one reader said they had been informed by a police officer that a vehicle had been

abandoned there and that an occupant “had fled, possibly towards the motorway”.

A clue to what had been going on was revealed later in a tweet made by Thornbury police at 10.01pm: “Another pursuit Bradley Stoke, the suspicious car from Thornbury abandoned, the driver ran off towards Vantage Park.”

Vantage Park is the nearby business park on Old Gloucester Road which houses the Winter Stream Farm pub.

The tweet included a photo of a red car with the driver’s door open (see above).

In response to an enquiry from the Journal, an Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said (on Thursday 9th June): “We were alerted to a male who was acting suspiciously in Church Road, Thornbury just after 7.20pm last night.”

“After he was approached by officers, he made off from the area in a car at speed.”

“We utilised a number of

resources, including the police helicopter, to locate the vehicle.”

“It was later found abandoned in Palmers Leaze, Bradley Stoke.”

“Our investigation continues but we would ask anyone with information to contact us now on 101 and quote crime reference number 5216125216.”

An earlier tweet by Thornbury police identified the vehicle involved in the incident as a red Renault Megan. ● An eye witness, driving near Great Meadow Roundabout at the time of the incident, later told the Journal: “The car was being chased by the police and the driver was driving at speed towards the roundabout and at the last minute decided to swap to the opposite side of the road (head on with my car). I swerved and mounted the kerb and he went around the roundabout the wrong way. I was in shock and have had recent surgery, so police called an ambulance.”

Ask the Doctor with Dr Faisal Siddiqui of Bradley Stoke Surgery The state of general practice

I

am sure many of you are aware of the current issues in the NHS. From junior doctor strikes to NHS trusts with massive deficits, the NHS is always the subject of a good headline. But how does general practice figure into all of this?

Unfortunately, for many years, general practice has been woefully underfunded in comparison to our hospital colleagues. Did you know that general practice provides 90 percent of overall patient contacts but only receives seven percent of the overall NHS budget?

There is future hope for uplift for GP budgets in the next five years, but at the present moment in time, there are no immediate extra funds coming through and, in fact, most practices have seen a reduction in income following a recent contract review. This has been coupled with the biggest GP

recruitment crisis in recent years.

Unfortunately, many GP training posts remain vacant nationally and there are record levels of GP vacancy rates. Many local surgeries are advertising regularly and have unfilled vacancies.

There has also been a significant increase in demand for our services. For example, during the peak winter periods, we were fielding over 1,600 phones calls per week for urgent GP assistance at Bradley Stoke Surgery. These are record levels for the practice and over three times the amount we would usually expect.

I was asked at our last patient participation group meeting why we had changed our appointment system. At the surgery we are perpetually looking at our services and how to become more efficient. At peak demand periods we found GPs were best triaging calls and often were able to give

self-help advice over the phone rather than bring people to see us face to face. We have also looked at diversifying our clinical team and recruited nurse practitioners to help with minor ailments and are also looking at using other professionals, including mental health workers and pharmacists, to provide management and treatment within the GP setting.

However, we do recognise that patients do like to have access and would like to see their GP face to face when possible. To this end in June we are planning to return back to our previous system to ease access.

So what is the state of general practice? Well, here at Bradley Stoke Surgery, we are working hard to ensure you will continue to receive the same high quality care. The future, however, is very uncertain at the present for general practice locally and nationally.

But there are many things we can all do to help ease the burden. Is yours a simple minor condition that can be evaluated by your local pharmacist? A variety of conditions are selflimiting and can be treated with over the counter treatment.

There are various internet resources that can be useful; I would recommend the NHS Choices website as well as patient.co.uk. We as GPs will always be available, but in the future you may be offered an appointment with an alternative health professional who will be the appropriate person for the problem.

By working together, patients and health professionals, I hope we will be able to weather this “rough patch”. If we don’t, some very difficult decisions will need to be made in the corridors of Whitehall.

News FREE summer play scheme for 5 to 11 year-olds starts on 25th July at BSCS

T

he annual FREE summer play scheme for children aged 5 to 11 gets under way at Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS) on 25th July.

Running Monday through Friday until 19th August, the play scheme is run by the Four Towns Play Association, which receives financial assistance from Bradley Stoke Town Council.

The aim of the play scheme is to ensure children have fun over the school summer holiday and also to provide a break for parents. It is designed to support children in the local area to play and learn, in the presence of others, in a safe and child-friendly environment.

Children attending the sessions take part in arts and crafts, sport and team games. There are also

visits from sports coaches, dance teachers and library staff.

Sessions run from 10.30am to 12.30pm, closing for lunch and are back in operation from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. It is essential children are collected during the lunch period as the play scheme is not covered by insurance during that period.

There is no need to book, just turn up and complete a registration form. The scheme runs on a first come first served basis, so please arrive promptly to avoid disappointment.

Similar sessions are being held at venues in Patchway, Filton and Stoke Gifford.

Let’s talk about hot and sweaty feet

weating is our body’s natural way of cooling itself down. Sweaty feet, or hyperhidrosis, is a common condition that causes excessive sweating on the soles of the feet.

Sweaty feet can lead to, or exacerbate, problems such as athlete’s foot, plantar warts, or other skin conditions.

There are over 250,000 sweat glands in each foot. Each foot normally produces half a pint of moisture per day. It’s important to keep in mind that our feet are sweating all the time, and bacteria are naturally present on our skin. For most people the sweat evaporates quickly, but for others the sweat is trapped within the glands, which allows bacteria to grow. This can be a problem if a person has more than the normal amount of sweat glands in their feet and is prone to excessive sweating.

There are various reasons why our feet sweat. Although the condition is most commonly brought on by emotional stress or physical exercise, there are other causes.

Heredity is said to play a role, as individuals with sweaty feet commonly share their condition with other family members.

Your body’s toxicity levels can also cause your feet to sweat. Toxins originate from foods we eat. Alcohol is also a toxin. If you do not exercise often, these toxins can build up

and cause your feet and other parts of your body to sweat.

Your feet may also be sweating due to the type of footwear you use. Certain footwear, such as nylon and cotton socks, or shoes made of plastic or some type of synthetic fabric lining, prevent sweat from evaporating.

Nylon and 100% cotton socks can act like a sponge and lock moisture in. This keeps your feet wet at all times and leads to additional problems like athlete’s foot and toenail fungus.

If you are suffering from sweaty feet, talk to your podiatrist about the problem.

Feet that sweat excessively and are not treated properly can lead to additional problems like itchiness, redness, odours and burning sensations.

The sound of music at Little Stoke Primary

A

s you walk through the corridors at Little Stoke Primary School it would be unusual not to hear music being made in some form or another. Our children absolutely love music and there is a wealth of different musical opportunities which children across the school participate in.

Choir

Our seventy strong red-tie choir performs concerts which are truly memorable and magical.

The Christmas show is our piece de resistance and is always a sell out! The programme is varied, challenging and highly entertaining with songs which are funny, reflective and moving in equal measure. We also have twenty children who participated in the South Gloucestershire Schools’ concert at the Colston Hall in June.

Joseph

One hundred and twenty children are currently working hard on our summer musical production – Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat! It promises to be a spectacular event for parents and friends to enjoy. We have been amazed at how quickly the children are learning the lyrics, the tunes and the drama and dance; their enthusiasm and motivation is always awe-inspiring. As an added bonus, staff are enjoying it just as much as the children!

Musical Curriculum

Next year, we have a full and varied music curriculum planned to engage and excite children as well as introducing them to some new musical experiences linked to different cultures.

These are provided by the Music Hub, conveniently located in our school!

Year 2 have a ten week block interestingly entitled STOMP! This involves making music using

junk. In Year 3, the children will be enjoying Samba which explores Brazilian rhythm and will link well with the South American aspect of their travel theme. Year 4 will receive musical tuition as a class over a period of thirty weeks. Next year they will all be learning to play the Fife (a great introduction to the flute) and through these lessons, will learn to read musical notation, understand and explore rhythm and pitch and learn to perform as part of a group. At least the fifes will be easier to carry than the trombones which Year 4 have been learning this

year! Year 5 are taking part in a cultural extravaganza – Bhangra.

This is involves Indian music and dancing and culminates in a fantastic performance which parent always greatly enjoy.

Finally, in Year 6, the children will have ten weeks of Djembe African drumming – a hugely popular experience and great for teaching children about rhythm and beat.

In key stage one the children will also be having opportunities to sing several times a week, learning new songs which support their learning through developing memory and

concentration and is also lots of fun! Many of our songs have actions and link well to our oral story telling emphasis.

Dance

In addition to this musical repertoire , we also have two dance groups (involving key stage one and two children) who regularly meet together to choreograph their own pieces and often perform in assembly and at school events. This year, both the choir and dance troupes will be performing at our summer forest community event on 8th July.

Bridge Community Church meets every Sunday at 10am at Bradley Stoke community school for vibrant modern worship and relevant talks on life and faith.

Controversial Hatchet Road MetroBus road widening scheme to be considered again at meeting on 6th July

C

ontroversial plans to widen Hatchet Road in Stoke Gifford, to accommodate a new southbound bus lane for the proposed Cribbs Patchway MetroBus Extension (CPME), are to be considered again

by South Gloucestershire Council at a meeting in Kingswood on 6th July.

The CPME is an extension of the MetroBus network which will extend the North Fringe to Hengrove Package route that is currently under construction. It is intended to provide a fast and direct link between Bristol Parkway station and The Mall bus station via the planned new mixed use development on the former Filton Airfield site.

The proposals relating to Hatchet Road require a strip of land to be taken from Meade Park (resulting in the loss of some trees) and the removal of hedgerows on both sides of the carriageway.

Taking your pet abroad

hat could be better? Your summer holiday within continental Europe, strolling along fantastic beaches, through winding country lanes or deep in the woods with your dog sharing the fun with you. Well, if you stick to the rules of the EU pet passport scheme, this is easy to do. Here are the things that you need to know.

First you need a microchip. All dogs have needed one since 6 April this year so this one’s easy. You need to phone your vet to check that they are registered to do this work and to book an appointment with them. Your pet will need a vaccination against rabies which your vet can give after checking your pet is healthy. This vaccination will last three years when it will need to have a booster. The passport will be prepared by your vet and they will discuss details of how to follow the rules of the EU pet passport scheme with you. Then you are ready to go – 3 weeks after the vaccination.

The two last things to bear in mind are that there are rules to follow when coming back into the UK. This is to make sure that you don’t bring any diseases back with you. You simply need to visit a vet to get treatment for tapeworms within 1-5 days of coming back home.

Vets would also recommend that you treat to prevent ticks and to repel sandflies and mosquitoes which can spread serious diseases to your pet. This can be done by your pet wearing a collar, by taking tablets or by using a spot on. There are lots of options and your vet will discuss these with you before you go.

You still have time to get all of this ready before the holidays start. So phone your vet for advice today. If you want to go outside of the EU you may need to phone DEFRA for additional advice.
