Local school now part-powered by sunshine

S

olar panels have been installed on the roof of Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS), producing an immediate saving in electricity costs which is expected to continue for the next 20 years.

The 250 kilowatt installation incorporates in the region of 1,000 panels mounted on an extruded railing system connected via cabling into a ground floor switch room.

The project has been funded by South Gloucestershire Council and will provide a double benefit to the community as the school will gain from reduced electricity bills while the council receives income from the school for the purchase of the generated electricity.

The school plans to make the most of the educational benefits, with a large performance display being situated in the school’s reception area showing power output, cumulative generation

and CO2 offset. In addition, a web-based data logging system will be provided to give generation and export data with an option for staff to use this information output for educational purposes. The science and maths departments are already exploring opportunities to incorporate the technology into lessons so that ‘live’ data can be

used in the classroom.

It is expected that the system will generate around 25% of the school’s daytime demand (when weather conditions allow) and provide a significant reduction in annual electricity costs.

BSCS executive headteacher Dave Baker commented: “Prudent financial management and an ability to think innovatively to

maximise our resources is as important as ever in what is a challenging environment for all schools. This project could provide significant cost savings for the school which will provide additional resources for learning and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the environment. ” Steve Moir, BSCS headteacher added: “If we can spend funding on education rather than electricity bills, and not only that, we are teaching our young people about the importance of looking after the environment too; it’s a win-win in my eyes.”

The Journal understands that the Olympus Academy Trust, of which BSCS is a member, is now exploring the possibility of having solar panel installations at its other schools, including Abbeywood Community School in Stoke Gifford, which is said to have roof space that would be well suited to this application.

outh West Winterguard Academy’s (SWWA’s) Cadet and Junior Guards, based in Bradley Stoke, have competed over the last three months to reach the finals of this year’s Winterguard UK Championships.

The group’s Cadets are still developing well, but the Junior group is seeded in first place after four competitions, with the opportunity of becoming UK Junior Winterguard champions on Saturday 2nd April.

SWWA is a non-profit volunteer community youth group which offers young people aged 6 to 21, male and female, of any ability, the exciting opportunity to take part in an instructed activity called Colourguard. The group provides

a fun way for young people to develop confidence, life and social skills whilst supporting health, fitness and well-being.

Colourguard is a dance based performing arts activity using flags and other equipment in which young people can express their movement and style performing a routine to music and be part of a successful team taking part in competitions.

During the summer, they participate in community fêtes and festivals and recruit new members, whilst in the winter they take part in competitions all around the country.

News Town council objects to Almondsbury helibase following pressure from residents

M

embers of Bradley Stoke Town Council’s (BSTC’s) Planning Committee have voted to object to a planning application for a new helicopter base on land near the M4/M5 Almondsbury Interchange, following petitioning by local residents.

South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) chose to quash its original decision to grant permission for the new emergency services helibase after an Almondsbury resident asked for the decision to be judicially reviewed.

SGC subsequently reopened the consultation process on the planning application and its Development Control (West) Committee will be asked to “redetermine” it once a new officer report has been prepared.

Full Council, 9th March 2016 Mr Griffiths, Foxfield Avenue, raised concerns about the impact on Bradley Stoke residents relating to planning application PT15/1438/F (construction of the new operations base for emergency helicopters). He explained that there is more information available for councillors to consider and urged the Town Council to review their stance on this application. The Chair, Cllr Roger Avenin thanked Mr Griffiths for his comments and asked for the matter to be added to the Planning & Environment Committee meeting agenda on 23rd March 2016.

Planning & Environment Committee, 23rd March 2016 The Town Clerk informed the meeting that Council originally considered the application last May and when it came up again in January 2016, no decisions were actually made, councillors were just advised that SGC had advised that all original comments from May 2015 were still relevant.

Therefore if councillors did decide they wanted to submit more comments that would be possible without having to invoke the Standing Order relating to no reconsideration within six months. However, it is worth noting that councillors’ original comments did reflect the impact of noise on Bradley Stoke residents.

The Chair, Cllr Andy Ward, invited the residents to speak in relation to this agenda item. Mr Griffiths, Foxfield Avenue, has circulated information to councillors raising concerns about the proposals and the significant impact that the proposed helicopter base will have on the lives of residents of Bradley Stoke.

Jean Manning and Karen Baker, The Park, raised concerns that, if emergency helicopter bases are being closed down across the country, the use from the base at Almondsbury will only increase. There is a need to fight this proposal now, otherwise, if it is granted, there will be nothing anyone can do. Once the base is in situ, it will set a precedent for other things. The residents felt that BSTC have not kept them informed of the developments.

The Chair, Cllr Andy Ward, commented that the Town Council were aware of the strength of feeling when they considered the application in May 2015.

Following discussion, Cllr Paul Hardwick proposed that Bradley Stoke Town Council now OBJECTS to this planning application on grounds of unclear results from the original ARUP Noise and Vibration Assessment and asks for the other 30 possible sites for the siting of the emergency helicopter base be revisited, seconded

by Cllr Andy Ward, carried unanimously. The Chair thanked the residents for attending the meeting.

Baileys Court marathon stars raise funds for Sport Relief and MS-UK

By Nikki Hallur hildren at Baileys Court Primary School were joined by marathon runner and local mum of two, Sharon Hicks, on Friday 18th March; together they held a sponsored running event which raised money for Sports Relief and MSUK. A few weeks earlier, Sharon had presented a special assembly in the school where she showed children a video of the London Marathon, which she will be running on 24th April in support of MS-UK. Sharon has pledged to raise £2,000 for her chosen charity, and the school joined in the fundraising to collect over £5,000 for Sports Relief.

Baileys Court Primary School started their Sports Relief event with the arrival of an inflatable ‘start/finish’ gantry which was

provided by Great Western Runners and decorative flags from Relish Runners. Sharon and the school were joined by Alan Wilcox, or “Alan the Dog”, who acted as lead runner and was assisted by Bob Turner The mission of the day was for the school year groups to cumulatively cover the distance of a marathon. Each year group, including teachers and classroom assistants, took turns to run laps of the school playing field and playground. These distances were added together at the end of the day. Their total distance was equivalent to 6.2 marathons, which surpassed their mission by far! The children who took part were presented with medals the following week, and those who raised more than £100 were given special trophies. Sharon

said: “It was a real pleasure to see their faces as they were awarded their prizes, bringing a fantastic closure to a brilliant fun day.”

Sharon’s passion for running began in her twenties, before which she says she “avoided exercise”. The first running club she joined was in Saltash and at this time she did the Plymouth Half Marathon. After moving to Bradley Stoke, with the demands of work and family life, she gave up running for a while, until a friend suggested the Little Stoke parkrun. She says that although she “came in last” she was “bitten by the running bug again”. Sharon joined the North Bristol Running Group and last year completed the Bristol Half Marathon, Cardiff Half Marathon and several other races. She thought it was time to apply

At first, Sharon was unsuccessful in the ballot, but she was later contacted by MS-UK who offered her a gold bond place.

Sharon says she applied for a place with this charity because her brother-in-law has the condition and she has “seen how the silent progression of the disease affects quality of life.” She added that

she will be “proud to wear the charity’s colours on 24th April.”

Sharon is now dedicated to training and has done 22 miles, which is the longest recommended training distance.

Fission 20:20, a 20 mile race around Berkeley in 3 hours 14 minutes. Her fundraising efforts are also underway as she has raised around half of her £2,000 target. She has raised the amount through events such as a raffle at

Town’s new skate park a big hit with riders

B

radley Stoke’s new concrete skate park, commissioned by the town council at a cost approaching £300,000, is now available for use by members of the public following a low profile “soft opening” on Monday 14th March.

Floodlights, allowing yearround use of the facility up to its official closing time of 9.30pm, are due to be installed over the next few weeks, along with a converted shipping container that will be used as a social space when a youth worker is present at the site.

Landscaping of the area around the park will be ongoing and fit in with the planting seasons as appropriate.

An official opening event with ribbon cutting, pro-rider demos, ‘have a go’ sessions and an informal ‘jam’ is being planned for Saturday 23rd April.

The new park has proved popular with local users in its first few weeks and has also attracted attention from enthusiasts across the wider Bristol area, with several videos being posted on social media

channels showing expert riders putting it to the test.

Journal editor Stephen Horton visited the park in its second week of operation to find out how it was being received.

Scooter rider Liam, 12, said he hadn’t previously visited skate parks but had seen people having fun and was encouraged to join in by his friends. As a beginner, he prefers to use the park in the morning on the way to school, when it is less busy. “With fewer people around, I’m not as embarrassed when I fall off,” he added.

He currently restricts his activity to going up and down in the large bowl feature, “because my scooter isn’t the best”, and says he will visit the park “whenever I have spare time”.

Another user, Sam, 13, was testing out the park on a new BMX bike, having “upgraded” from a scooter the day before.

He said he liked the way the new park is set out, describing it as being “much better than the old one”, where he had spent a lot of his time.

“Of all the skate parks I know, this is definitely the best,” he said, adding that he was familiar with parks in Horfield, Patchway and Filton.

He added that he is currently learning tricks from some of the more experienced BMX riders at the park.

For BMX rider James, one of the group of local young people who were involved in the development of the new park, it is “just great – so much better than I was expecting”, so much so that he had “taken the first couple of days off college to ride it”.

He describes the vertical wall feature as being “a good challenge”, while the volcano in the centre of the main bowl is “a

little iffy” because of its size. The box jump, “ideal for back flips”, is one of his favourite features.

Martin, 22, from Eastville, had heard about the new park “on the grapevine”, and has already made several visits by bus. As an experienced skateboarder, the large size of the Bradley Stoke park is a big attraction for him.

He is fond of performing ‘grinds’ along the edges of the main bowl and other features in the park, but adds that the number of scooter riders milling around at busy times can limit the number of runs he can make.

The town council’s youth participation worker Graham Baker said he is amazed at the wide age range of users he has seen at the park - from Reception age children calling in with their scooters on the way to the nearby school to a 50-year-old man who spent several hours skateboarding one morning during the park’s opening week.

He is pleased to see that there is a more even distribution of disciplines being practised (including inline skating) compared to what was seen at the old skate park, where scooting had been predominant.

Another positive development he has noticed is that some young people who had exhibited challenging behaviour after becoming bored with the old skate park are now re-engaging in skate park activity.

The new skate park is located within the grounds of Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre BS32 9BS. The town council has defined its opening hours as 8am to 9.30pm.

‘Couch to 5k’ participants graduate at parkrun

T

he Little Stoke parkun on 19th March saw a record turnout from members of Bradley Stoke based North Bristol Running Group (NBRG), including many “graduates” from the group’s recent ‘Couch to 5k’ course that had started on 29th January.

‘Couch to 5k’ is a beginners’ programme that the group runs two or three times a year. It involves exercises and short runs to begin with, building up to 5km in just eight weeks.

Writing on the NBRG Facebook page prior to the parkrun, coach Alan Wilcox said: “All the beginners have done such an amazing job - we are all feeling very proud of you all right now.

We would like to thank all the leaders/helpers who have helped to make this beginners’ course such a great success. We look forward to seeing all our [now] ‘improvers’ on a Tuesday / Wednesday night.”

Another participant, Jo Russell, added: “Thank you so much everyone for all your hard work and encouragement over the last few weeks, I can’t believe I actually did it and I enjoyed it.

(Never thought I’d say that about running!) … I look forward to many more runs with the group!”

St Chad’s pupils celebrate Easter in style

P

upils at St Chad’s Primary School in Stoke Lodge decided they wanted to see in the start of the Easter Weekend with a whole school celebration.

Pupils from all classes and all ages were invited to design an Easter Bonnet, reflecting the changing of the seasons and the arrival of the Easter Weekend and to share their creation during a special celebration in school.

The pupils and families took to the challenge set by the school PTA (Friends) with their usual wholehearted gusto, producing an amazing array of bonnet based art works.

The pupils had a chance to share their creations in a special whole school assembly where the hats were paraded in a tremendous spectacle of bunnies and eggs, crosses and colour, and ended with six pupils being crowned the overall winners. The winning pupils were rewarded with chocolate gifts when their bonnets were judged the best in their Key Stage groups, but all of the bonnets were real head-turners and headteacher Darren Brown admitted that selecting the winners was a

near impossible task as all of the pupils had made such an astounding effort.

Some of the winners were: Elsie Brunt (EYFS), Henry Webb Macs Rakowski (Y1), Scarlett Burley (Y2) and Levi Hanh (Y3).

It was so well supported that even parents of children who were ill and at home were posting pictures of their completed bonnets on the PTA (Friends) website – now that’s dedication!

Mr Brown commented : “We always have a lot of fun building on the enjoyment of learning with exciting events at St Chad’s.

New Aztec West / A38 road widening works likely to begin in May

SGC statement on planned Aztec West roundabout / A38 southbound widening works (issued 24th March) Site investigations have been in progress since December 2015 and will continue to take place throughout April. To date these works have taken place largely off carriageway.

The next phase of work is currently scheduled to begin in May and will involve upgrading the A38 northbound shared use path (between Aztec West Roundabout and the M5) to a width of three metres. We are also installing new controlled pedestrian and cycle crossings at Bradley Stoke Way, Gloucester Rd A38 north and Park Avenue as part of this project.

We are awaiting confirmation from the utility company (Wales & West Utilities), however our current plan is to start the A38 southbound utility works at the same time as the shared use path works if possible. This involves the re-routing of a major gas line away from the carriageway.

Due the complex nature of the utility diversions that are necessary to carry out the widening works, we are focusing our efforts on ensuring that these are as developed as much as possible before the main construction work on the carriageway begins.

outh Gloucestershire Council (SGC) has confirmed its intention to begin a new set of roadworks on and around the Aztec West Roundabout within the next two months.

The new scheme, which is completely independent of the MetroBus work currently being carried out in the area, is being funded as part of an £18.1 million Growth Deal award made to the West of England LEP. SGC says the work is necessary to “mitigate the impact of traffic arising from new developments”, such as the Cribbs/Patchway New Neighbourhood where 5,700 new homes are expected to be constructed by 2027.

Features of the scheme include: • Widening of the A38 approach to the roundabout from the North (from Junction 16) to provide six lanes entering the junction

(compared to the existing four).

This will enable two lanes to be dedicated to each of the key traffic movements (left to Bradley Stoke Way, straight on to the A38 towards Filton, and right turn to the Aztec West Business Park).

• Widening of the eastern side of the circulatory carriageway to provide four lanes through this part of the roundabout (two serving the straight on movement to the A38 south and Filton, and two serving the right turn into Aztec West Business Park).

• Installation of new pedestrian and cycle controlled crossing points across three arms of the roundabout (Bradley Stoke Way, Aztec West and A38 to the north).

The delivery of this scheme will be phased alongside the MetroBus works, which take place on a separate approach to the junction. The major carriageway works associated with the Aztec West roundabout lane widening are not planned to begin until next year, after the Bradley Stoke Way section of the MetroBus works has been completed.

Further information about the delivery of the scheme and notification of any traffic management restrictions will be made available two weeks before the start of any works. The dedicated scheme webpage www.southglos.gov.uk/A38roundaboutwidening will be kept up to date throughout the duration of the works.

This webpage will include phasing plans that identify the traffic management areas required for each phase.

The construction is expected to last approximately one year with funding currently available through the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership, and agreed up until 2017. The work is being completed in this time frame as funding was available during the current and the next financial year, and we also want to realise the benefits of these improvements as soon as possible to help ease congestion in the area.

We recognise that the works may cause some disruption and will endeavour to minimise their impact wherever possible.

March in the Three Brooks nature reserve

T

he plan for our March workday was to improve the wetlands (the area by the Braydon gate entrance). We welcomed two newbies, Emma and Megan, and then headed off to the marsh, with a sort of plan!

We’ve bought a book on wetland management but haven’t read it yet, so we cleared old vegetation from the channels so that you can at least see them now. Andy, Mark, Emma and Ceri cleared a huge blockage, we ‘wattled and daubed’ to slow the water down (it’s eroding the banks), we dug more channels and we litter picked, collecting over 13 bags of rubbish. Best finds of the day were two road signs, a boot, a dagger, a helicopter, a strange yellow creature and a woman’s headless torso, but don’t worry

they were all plastic! For those who have been here before, we only found a few coconuts, instead of the dozen or so we usually find; neither did we find any of the frogmen who had been seen cleaning out culverts.

Another task this month was to move our tool-store as the leisure centre have more building works planned and we would have lost access for several months. We took the opportunity to have a good clear out, although our plan to leave enough space for our new brush cutters failed, as although it all came out, it didn’t seem to all go back in!

Green Gym

Thursday’s Green Gym group had an another ‘away day’ at Dewfalls Pond in an attempt

to restore it to its former glory.

Some bramble was cleared away, wild flower seed was planted and the pond was restocked with a wide variety of plants, supplied by John V Morris of South Gloucestershire Council (SGC). John took the opportunity to get out of the office and came along to help and to check on the previous improvements, a new hibernaculum and a newly planted hedge line of hawthorn and other native bushes.

Although, to put it politely, the water was “a bit nippy”, we found several smooth newts and we hope the great crested newts will also soon make a welcome return.

Earth Hour

For the first time, we hosted an Earth Hour ‘Picnic in the Dark’ and joined in with a record-breaking 178 countries and territories around the world who took part in Earth Hour on Saturday 19th March.

Globally, over 400 iconic

landmarks switched off their lights, including famous UK buildings like Brighton Pier, Big Ben, Blackpool Tower and Buckingham Palace. The weather was kind and we all had a thoroughly enjoyable evening, consuming vast amounts of ‘smores’, chocolate cake and hot chocolate. The evening was enhanced by the rosy glow from the fire pit and the lanterns made for the event by Rainbow Girl Guides. Although we forgot the spooky stories and the cloud rather hindered our attempts at star gazing, we didn’t mind, as the highlight of the evening was the glow in the dark bowling.

Andy was winning until I lost the ball in the dark and we had to call it a day. Next year we’ll have to work out how to make the ball glow too!

Bradley Stoke accountancy firm has responded to an increase in growth and turnover by appointing two new directors.

The appointments are part of a succession of encouraging news from Dunkley’s Chartered Accountants, based in Woodlands Lane, as the company continues to expand.

Saturday 4th sees a repeat of the traditional community fair at the Jubilee Centre, which this year will feature a dog agility display, skate board & BMX displays and music from local bands. A football tournament for Year 1 schoolchildren will take place on the upper pitch.

Sole Sisters’ 10k Run kicks off the action on Sunday 5th (starting & finishing at the Jubilee Centre), followed by BS Cricket Club’s 25th anniversary celebrations at Baileys Court Activity Centre.

Sara has been a member of Bradley Stoke’s Three Brooks Conservation Group for several years, where she is the treasurer and helps to organise events such as the recent 10th anniversary celebration. She is also a member of ‘Green Gym’, a group which helps to look after the Nature Reserve for the benefit of the local community. As a leader of Bradley Stoke in Bloom, Sara has excellent ideas on how to make Bradley Stoke a prettier place. The work of this group has made a big difference to the town.

Sara has been a Rainbow leader for many years, in both Severn Beach and Alveston. In both groups, she shows initiative and creativity in providing interesting activities for the girls, enabling them to learn about the world in a fun and positive environment.

She always shows great initiative in all her roles and approaches them with energy and enthusiasm. She gets on well with people from all walks of life and makes the people she works with feel welcome. She is a natural leader with a good sense of humour who takes everything in her stride.

Sara has many creative and original ideas and all the groups she works with benefit from her exceptional vision. She is, in short, an inspiration. Bradley Stoke is a far brighter place because of Sara.

Fred Hillberg Fred is the Treasurer and Vice Chairman of Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation Group.

Based in Stoke Gifford, the group deals with the conservation of the woodland and also offers practical workdays and events.

Fred has worked hard as an unpaid volunteer and supported the group through some difficult times. He has contributed to the group’s survival, and its now great success.

Fred’s involvement with the group began in 2003 and his extensive long term commitment and contribution as a hardworking volunteer and also as a committee member are invaluable. This thriving group runs a highly successful series of workdays in association with the University of the West of England (UWE). Fred has made a major contribution in helping to develop the woodland, which is a valuable, historic resource in an urban area. Fred has also helped to recruit UWE student volunteers, who in turn have made a major contribution to conserving the woodland themselves.

Joseph Dunford Joseph is an inspirational young man who is a champion and passionate advocate for nature, wildlife and conservation. He has contributed numerous hours of volunteering work for the environment with the Three Brooks Nature Conservation Group in Bradley Stoke and The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) TreeLife Centre in Kingswood, where Joseph is working towards the John Muir award for conservation volunteering with his Breakthrough Project Mentor. He also volunteered for the Avon Invasive Weeds Project and Wild4Life Project joining four Big Pull Himalayan Balsam community clearance days. Joseph regularly undertakes independent litter clearance checks in the green spaces near his house in Bradley Stoke and actively campaigns for nature, getting involved in marches against climate change and in support of international wildlife protection.

Local unsung heroes honoured by council

N

early thirty unsung heroes, amongst them four from The Stokes, were honoured at the Chair of South Gloucestershire Council’s Community Awards event held at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College’s WISE Campus on Thursday 17th March.

The annual awards recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution local unpaid volunteers make to life in South Gloucestershire. These people give up their time freely

to help others and bring our communities together, and were rewarded for their efforts at the special ceremony.

Chair of South Gloucestershire Council Cllr Erica Williams attended along with the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Dame Janet Trotter, Vice Lord Lieutenant Robert Bernays, Group Chief Executive & Executive Principal of South Gloucestershire & Stroud College Kevin Hamblin and Principal and Deputy Chief Sara-Jane Watkins.

Throughout the evening, award winners from a wide variety of backgrounds were presented with their certificates by Cllr Erica Williams and Sara-Jane Watkins. The final round was the Lord Lieutenant’s Special Award, which saw Dame Janet Trotter and Robert Bernays present £100 to Dr Derek Dominey for his valued services supporting people with dementia in South Gloucestershire.

“Our Community Awards have been running since 2003 to celebrate the contribution local people make to life in South Gloucestershire and over 400 people have received an award since they started.

These awards are a small way to recognise the importance of volunteering and to thank a few of our local volunteers for their efforts to continue to make South Gloucestershire a great place to live and work.”

Springtime fun at Willow Brook

Bowls club supports MS Therapy Centre

amilies in Bradley Stoke will be able to celebrate the start of spring at a free fun day at the Willow Brook Centre on Thursday 7th April.

There will be comedy from Leek FM’s expert gardeners Pete and Ged Moss (complete with their musical wheelbarrow and the world’s largest sprout).

They will be joined by friends Greenfinger Folk – a pair of mischievous garden fairies that live inside giant topiary bushes.

A beautiful eight-foot Butterfly will be hovering around Willow Brook. Children will be able to follow a butterfly trail around the shops to win a chocolate treat.

Youngsters can get creative at the craft station located in the Mall. They will be able to make butterfly masks and Maypole ribbon wands to take home.

The event will take place

At the recent Spring Meeting of the Bradley Stoke Bowls Club, members were treated to an inspiring talk by Ruth Smale, a long time MS sufferer.

She outlined the various facilities available at the MS Therapy Centre in Wheatfield Drive, Bradley Stoke, which is entirely funded by charitable donations. She also praised the work of the paid and volunteer staff and encouraged support for this wonderful place.

Councillors want more consultation on Three Brooks parkrun plans

W

ith the future of the Little Stoke parkrun under threat after Stoke Gifford Parish Council signalled its intention to levy a charge of £1 per runner towards the maintenance costs of Little Stoke Park, it has been revealed that Bradley Stoke’s Three Brooks Local Nature Reserve (LNR) is being considered as an alternative venue for the popular Saturday morning running event.

The news comes as an online petition to ‘Keep Little Stoke parkrun in Little Stoke Park’ passed a new milestone of 8,000 signatures.

Stoke Gifford Parish Council has said it plans to make a decision on the future of the Little Stoke parkrun at its meeting on Tuesday 12th April.

Hundreds of parkruns take place around the country at 9am every Saturday. Each event is a free-to-enter timed 5k run that is open to everyone and designed to be safe and easy to take part in.

They are organised on an entirely voluntary basis, with a core team of helpers in each locality supplemented by participants who, from time to time, “give up” their run in order to help.

A meeting of Bradley Stoke Town Council (BSTC) on 9th

March was informed that South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) has “approved in principle” a ‘hire of open space’ application from parkrun to use the Three Brooks LNR from April 2016.

The manager of Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre [from where it is presumed the parkrun would start] is said to be supportive of the idea, while the Willow Brook Centre is said to be “positive” about providing parking facilities for parkrun participants.

The final decision on the use of the nature reserve lies with SGC, as they own the land, but town councillors noted that they “have a responsibility to ensure that Bradley Stoke residents are not impacted on by the events i.e. large number of runners on the reserve inconveniencing dog walkers, pedestrians etc., issues with parking for those attending the events and damage to the paths in the reserve.”

A member of the public invited to speak at the meeting commented that she was uncomfortable with the idea of a nature reserve being used for the purposes of a parkrun event as it was not an appropriate location, being at odds with the ethos of nature reserves in general, which are designed to be areas of peace and tranquillity for all.

Councillors raised concerns about the limited consultation that had taken place with local residents, seeming to consist of an email sent to some local SGC councillors and a few other people. They felt that before any firm decision was taken by SGC, the views of the residents of Bradley Stoke need to be sought through a more formalised consultation process.

It was agreed to ask SGC to carry out a widespread consultation across all residents of Bradley Stoke, before any final decision is made.

The Journal understands that efforts to establish a weekly parkrun in the Three Brooks LNR will be progressed even if Stoke Gifford Parish Council agrees to allow the Little Stoke parkrun to continue, as it would help ease the pressures caused by high

attendance at Little Stoke and other local parkruns.

Further concerns about the establishment of a parkrun in Bradley Stoke were voiced by councillors at the meeting of BSTC’s Planning Committee on 23rd March, where a Parish Biodiversity Action Plan produced by SGC was discussed.

In their agreed response to SGC, councillors noted: “The town council are concerned that the possible proposed weekly parkrun events taking place on the nature reserve will be detrimental and environmentally unfriendly to the nature reserve and conflict with the Parish Biodiversity Action Plan.”

Detailed MetroBus phasing plans revealed

M

etroBus construction firm Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd has published detailed phasing plans for the work it is carrying out on Bradley Stoke Way between the Aztec West Roundabout and Patchway Brook Roundabout (near Aldi).

The drawings, which show work on this stretch of the road continuing until December 2016, appeared on the firm’s community website just days after a public meeting called by local MP Jack Lopresti heard several members of the public complain about a lack of information about the construction schedule.

The plan applicable to the current phase of the project (labelled 2.1) is shown on the facing page.

The Journal understands that local residents affected by the works were sent a letter at the beginning of March outlining the plans for this section of the project, which states that it is expected that the Woodlands Lane junction will be fully open and signalised by “late autumn” – a further slippage from the “start of September” date given at the meeting organised by Mr Lopresti on 26th February.

However, a source at Griffiths has since assured us that there is still a “genuine aspiration” to have it finished by September.

The letter confirmed plans to close the footway along [both sides of] Bradley Stoke Way between Woodlands Lane and Orchard Gate, with lengthy alternative routes for pedestrians being signposted (see map on facing page). The closures are said to be required for “pedestrian safety” and to

allow contractors to “work more quickly and better mitigate any future unforeseen issues”.

The footway on the north side of the road was duly closed during the second week of March.

A source at Griffiths said the footway on the south side will be kept open “for as long as possible”.

The Journal understands that the footway closure on the north side could last until June, with the closure on the south side possibly extending until August.

No phasing plans have yet been published for the stretch of Bradley Stoke Way between Patchway Brook Roundabout (near Aldi) and Savages Wood Roundabout (near the leisure centre). Work on this stretch commenced on 25th February and is expected to be completed “by the end of the year”.

Following consultation with the construction team managers in charge of the Bradley Stoke Way site area, Griffiths’ new public liaison officer Jim Aitken commented: “I am delighted to be involved in this project and to work with local residents and businesses to assist in minimising the disruption during the construction phase.

As the principal contractor for nearby sections of the MetroBus North Fringe to Hengrove Package, I would like to reassure The Journal’s readers that Griffiths are working hard behind the scenes with South Gloucestershire Council and their design team to mitigate the problems experienced and to ensure all the work is completed safely and in a timely manner and that I will keep them regularly updated via The Journal and our community website (community. alungriffiths.co.uk).”

MetroBus status report Woodlands Lane The ‘left turn in’ reopened on 26th February, however, the left lane of Bradley Stoke Way coming off the Aztec West Roundabout will remain closed “to ensure safe traffic flows through the site on the approach to the works”. The ‘left turn out’ is expected to open by June 2016 (not signalised). The ‘right turn in’ and ‘right turn out’ are now expected to reopen by “late autumn” (see article, left).

Near Patchway Brook Roundabout Phasing plans show the zebra crossing on Bradley Stoke Way near Bradley Pavilions remaining closed until August, however, a source at Griffiths told The Journal: “We are still working hard to get the crossing temporarily open for the end of March. The phasing plans refer to the full opening of the crossing with Belisha beacons, which requires an electricity supply.”

Patchway Brook Roundabout to Savages Wood Roundabout Traffic management measures were installed on 25th/26th February. Work is now under way on north-east side of road between Bowsland Way and Primrose Bridge, following vegetation clearance. A high voltage electricity cable has been diverted, material excavated and stone laid for the new traffic lane.

Streetlighting columns have been temporarily moved to the other side of the road while the widening works are taking place. Further vegetation clearance down to the pedestrian crossing near Tesco was expected to commence on 26th March. Construction along this stretch is expected to start in early May following newt trapping.

Near Savages Wood Roundabout Work has commenced near the entrance to the Willow Brook Centre to install a new MetroBus bus stop in part of what is currently the off-slip bus lane into the shopping centre.

Bus operator First West of England has announced changes to the timetables of the 73 and X73 services, with effect from Sunday 24th April.

The frequency of the 73 service between 10am and 3pm Monday through Friday will be reduced to ‘every 15 minutes’ (currently ‘every 12 minutes’). The frequency on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays will remain the same.

On the X73 service, the current 5.20pm journey from Bristol city centre to Bradley Stoke will depart five minutes later at 5.25pm.

News Local Scout group set to expand again!

Friends of Jubilee Green Easter crafts event

Adult volunteers urgently needed to run new sections

W

ith nearly 250 young people and leaders, the 1st Bradley Stoke Scout Group is already one of the largest in the country.

It comprises of nine sections (four Beaver colonies, three Cub packs and two Scout troops), a marching band, a water activity unit and has a partnership with the Trident Explorer Unit.

You might have thought that there was no further expansion possible. However, with over 180 young people on their waiting list, the group has taken the bold decision to open a further two sections, one each for Cubs and Scouts. This will ease the movement of existing young people into higher sections plus take more off the waiting list. It is planned to open these new sections in September, with preparatory work starting now and continuing across the summer period.

So, while the group has young people waiting to join, and has identified locations for the

new sections to meet, the most important resource it needs are adult volunteers as act as leaders.

They estimate that they need five new leaders to run one section evening, which allows for one or two to be away at any given time (we all have busy lives). You also don’t have to be a dyed-in-the-wool Beaver, Cub or Scout to take up the roles, as full training will be given. Plus, you can join one of the existing sections so that you can learn from their current leaders before opening the new sections.

The group also has a standing requirement for leaders to help run their existing section meetings. Currently, they are especially keen on getting a new Monday evening Cub Leader for their Holy Trinity pack.

Living Landmarks in Bradley Stoke The text from all ten plaques (see story on facing page) The Grange

Built in 1908, Woodlands Grange was a fine house occupied by Mr George Williams, a great benefactor to the church and school in Patchway and a churchwarden of St Paul’s in Bristol. Every summer he invited local children to a grand tea party and games in the grounds.

Children would go again at Christmas to sing carols and receive a silver sixpence. The much extended Grange is now used as offices.

The Saxon Path*

Double hedges at various points in the town indicate a probable Saxon track from Stoke Gifford (Rock Lane) through fields that succumbed to Bradley Stoke and Patchway Common. Recommended surveying techniques have determined the track must be over 900 years old, suggesting it predates the Norman Conquest (1066). Much of it remains although fragmented by modern developments. A Saxon spear has

also been found.

Both the start and finish of Saxon path reveal a lot about the places where people first settled centuries ago. In a built up area like Bradley Stoke, hedgerows bring a bit of wilderness back into our lives, a breath of fresh air from the countryside. If we find a hedgehog snuffling around our town, a robin singing in our ornamental tree or bluebells blooming at the bottom of the garden, it may be that they have arrived in a hedge that runs behind our property.

Really, hedgerows are quite remarkable structures, taking up relatively little space yet representing an enormous area.

They are a ribbon of nature reserves running through our town.

The Saxon path is a highway for humans as well as for plants and animals. It may only be a footpath linking a couple of parishes a mile or so apart but when you have set your feet upon one road, you are then linked to every road that runs across

the earth. What journeys have started from this path in the past.

And what journeys will mark from it in the future?

Saxon path stretches far back in the shadows of history. And with a little help from us, it can be extended beyond our time, providing beauty and richness for the future.

Manor Farm*

Manor Farm was an imposing residence by local standards but was demolished to make way for houses. The local hunt met by the pond beside it, which still remains and is looked after by the Patchway Conservation Group. Parts of the old orchards also survive here. Some of the rubble from the Farm has been

incorporated in the foot bridges that now cross the brooks entering Three Brooks Lake.

Primrose Cottage

Primrose Cottage was demolished to accommodate Bradley Stoke Way, and adjoined a cottage that was set up by a Mr Milliner as Patchway’s first commercial bakery that operated c.1900 and even supplied bread to Bristol.

Parts of the cottage garden remain. The name ‘Primrose Bridge’ – for the footbridge across Bradley Stoke Way – was chosen by local residents in 1993 to commemorate the cottage.

Bowsland Farm

Bowsland Farm stood nearby and the ornamental trees lining the banks of the stream marked the end of the farmhouse garden. The farm certainly existed in 1885 and was one of the last working farms before Bradley Stoke was begun in the late 1970s.

The name is remembered in Bowsland Way, Bowsland Green Primary School and Bowsland Wood – the new wood to the north of Savages Wood.

Savages wood may be on the site of the ancient forest that covered Britain after the last Ice Age. A haven for plants and wildlife, it was maintained for many years by farmer Howard Davis for enjoyment by local people. During World War 2 a decoy airfield with cardboard aeroplanes was constructed west of the wood.

Some of the fields were bombed during the War, leaving four large craters. These have been

left untouched, you can find them as you explore the wood. New trees planted north of the wood compensate for those felled to create Bradley Stoke Way. Two ponds have been created as a habitat for protected newts.

Webb’s Wood

Webb’s Wood dates from at least 1725 and was incorporated in Three Brooks Local Nature Reserve in 2005. Plants and wildlife flourish here and dense clumps of hazel coppicing indicate their poles were used for fencing and firewood, probably on a seven year cycle.

Underneath is a 6ft diameter sewer constructed by Wessex Water to take waste from Bradley

Stoke to Avonmouth, a byproduct of which is Three Brooks Lake. Just north of the wood traces of medieval farm buildings have been found.

Sherbourne’s Brake

Sherbourne’s Brake is about 200 years old and completely protected by a tree preservation order. It was possible planted as a hunting covert following the Enclosures Act. Turkey Oaks, introduced from Turkey during the 19th century, are the tallest tress with their spreading crowns resembling cauliflowers, but their timber is a disappointment for building purposes. Stoke Brook flows through the Brake to Three Brooks Lake.

wo local schoolchildren were recently thrilled to discover a “missing” local history plaque set into a footpath that links Campion Way with the Three Brooks nature reserve.

One of ten Living Landmark plaques that were erected around Bradley Stoke in 2009 as part of a Heritage Lottery funded project, the Bowsland Farm plaque had been marked as “exact location unknown” when The Journal compiled an online information page about the project shortly after it had been completed.

Holly Jackson, 7, and brother Tommy, 4, noticed a small piece of writing appearing through a gap in a layer of leaves at the side of the path and excitedly brushed away the debris to uncover the

whole plaque.

Online research by the pair’s dad, Matt, led them to The Journal’s website where they discovered that they had found something that had eluded the BSJ for so long!

Journal editor Stephen Horton commented: “When I photographed the plaques back in 2009, with the intention of producing an annotated online map, I didn’t manage to find the Bowsland Farm plaque. I realise now that it’s because I was looking too close to the stream. A big thank you to Holly and Tommy for making the ‘discovery’ and letting us know.”

Baileys Court Farm

was blown down in 1760 and all trace had gone by 1860.

Baileys Court Farm was used as a site office for the developers and converted to a pub in 1988. The Pursey family once lived there, were hosts to the Berkeley Hunt and are remembered in Pursey Drive. Parts of Webb’s Farm, two hundred yards northwest, may have been 1,000 years old, was still inhabited in the 1950s, and Grade Two listed in 1984.

However, it had been so neglected that demolition had to follow.

Watch Elm Close, nearby, commemorates a hollow Elm tree used as a meeting place and shelter because of its immense size (40ft circumference at 2ft above ground in 1766). Dating from at least the 16th century it

Woodlands Green

The small hamlet of Woodlands Green, comprising three farms and their tied cottages, is known to have existed in the 12th century. The pond probably dates from the 16th century and has been carefully preserved and restored. Planners prevailed on developers to retain it as an oasis of calm within the surrounding office developments and it is still home to geese and other wildfowl.

Business Bristol Small Business Forum launched at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre

group of local business people who were meeting as the Bradley Stoke Small Business Forum, held a launch event for their new group in Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre on Monday 14th March.

The launch of the new Bristol Small Business Forum was designed to showcase the informal networking group, and provide an opportunity for a wider audience to experience the benefits of membership of the group.

Local public speaker Julian Okoye started the proceedings with his enthralling talk on “How judo helped me in public speaking: tips for small businesses” and international digital marketing expert Neil Wilkins gave a brilliant introduction to successful social media marketing.

The Bristol Small Business Forum will meet on the second Monday of every month at 6.30pm at Bradley Stoke Leisure

Centre. There is a small annual membership fee, but no cost to attend meetings. Any Bristol business is welcome to attend twice as a guest before deciding whether to join. There is no need to book in, people are welcome to just turn up on the night.

Bradley Stoke in Bloom report for March

Primrose Bridge

Last year we planted daffodils in the banks of Primrose Bridge but this year we took full advantage of Almondsbury Garden Centre’s primrose week and planted quite a few primroses! We hope you enjoy them. Further along Bradley Stoke Way, we had planted a mix of narcissi and native bluebells; we thought the mix of yellow and blue would be very attractive, but although the narcissi are now all waving their small yellow heads in the spring breeze, the bluebells are being just a little shy!

Garden tools

We’d like to say a big thank you to Miss Jean Perkins OBE, who is downsizing and has donated all her garden tools to BSiB. Jean has had a lifelong love of gardening, but accepts that perhaps now it is time to hang up

her shears, although her nephew told me that “old gardeners don’t die, they just go to pot!” We’re sad to hear Jean can no longer get out into her lovely garden, but very grateful for the tools and we’ll put them to good use.

Some of our tools were damaged after a break in, but we’d also like to say “thank you” to Colin Davies, who managed to repair them for us (and for free).

Planting work

The last of the 730 bulbs donated to us by Bradley Stoke Lions have been planted and we’re hopeful that in a year or so the path from Cornfield Close to The Common East may be named Bluebell Walk – well we can but hope!

We are also planning, with the help of the Chinese Association, to plant a monkey puzzle tree, with chrysanthemums on the roundabout into the town

centre. As many of you already know, 2016 is the year of the fire monkey and chrysanthemums are his lucky flower. (Interestingly, monkey years are all multiples of 12 - from 12 AD, through 1200 AD, to 2016.) Although it seems the amount of paperwork needed to make this happen requires the

Based at The Stokes Youth and Community Centre on Little Stoke Lane, next to Little Stoke Primary School, Safe Space offers ‘stay and play’ sessions every Thursday between 4pm and 6pm and on Saturdays between 1.30pm and 4.30pm.

The group aims to cater for children with a wide range of additional needs, irrespective of whether they have an official diagnosis. Parents attending the group are able to relax and share experiences with others.

All are welcome, including siblings, grandparents and carers, with each person asked to contribute £2 per visit.

The centre offers a main hall, complete with a large bouncy castle and lots of games and toys including train tracks, games consoles, table tennis and table football. Arts and craft activities are organised, while a smaller ‘sensory room’ offers a space for children to enjoy some peace and quiet.

Safe Space also has a large, secure outside area in which the children can run around and play.

Marcus Yates, one of the

charity’s trustees and a member of the management committee, says the facility is a godsend to families who find it stressful to attend mainstream children’s play venues, for fear that their child might have a ‘meltdown’, which can cause embarrassment and occasionally lead to complaints from the parents of other children.

“The advantage is that we have this building completely to ourselves. Parents and carers can relax, without feeling that they need to be watching their children all of the time.”

The group is able to take advantage of the centre’s kitchen, allowing refreshments to be provided on a ‘help yourself’ basis in a café-style social space.

Sessions currently attract around 20 families, with each typically bringing along one to three children.

One dad we spoke to, Rich from Hanham, said the Saturday session is a great place to bring his three children, one of whom has additional needs. “There aren’t many places that we can all go together. The kids really miss it if we can’t come for some reason.”

“For me, it’s great to share experiences and discuss coping mechanisms with the other parents and carers.”

Other parents we spoke to praised the relaxed atmosphere at Safe Space and said it was a great to receive support from other families who “understand”.

Back Pain

re you feeling a little ‘creaky’? Perhaps your back has a few aches and pains. Nothing ‘serious’, but enough to know that it hurts and maybe you feel the need for a few painkillers every now and then. Perhaps your backache is enough to stop you from doing the things you want to do. Maybe you have had back pain for years and you have simply “learnt to live with it”.

Back pain is normally caused by overloading the joints or muscles in the lower back.

The pain can vary from being localised or can spread to the buttocks and even into the legs, which can be as a result of a trapped nerve, commonly called Sciatica.

Chiropractors are trained to help patients with back pain and will treat patients according to their individual needs.

After taking a history of the problem, a relevant physical examination is done. The chiropractor discusses the best way forward with the patient, and treatment can be in different forms – joint manipulation, muscle work, massage, mobilisation, acupuncture and home exercises.

Not all patients need all the different forms of treatment and treatment is discussed with the patient before being undertaken.

Chiropractic care has been shown to be extremely effective in treating lower back pain.

However, the longer you leave something, the longer it takes to get better.

Chiropractors tend to see patients with back problems as they are seen as ‘spinal specialists’. However, they are trained in assessing and treating various conditions including general joint and muscle pain, sports injuries and many more.

I particularly enjoy treating neck problems and headaches, some types of which respond very well to Chiropractic care.

Trophy haul for local martial arts fighters

T

he Dragon Tang Soo Do Championships came to Bradley Stoke Community School on Saturday 19th March, with around ten clubs taking part, including those from Bristol, Portishead and Bournemouth.

It was a successful event for members of Bradley Stoke Dragon Tang Soo Do Club, which saw three of its adult members and four juniors come away with trophies and medals.

Fighters are split into age, height and belt grades, with separate classes for males and females and they compete in the disciplines of sparring (fighting), forms (patterns) and weapons.

Additional categories include team forms, team sparring and a black belt challenge, the latter being restricted to black belts up to 3rd dan or blue belts (called cho dan bo, junior and senior) who are in training to become black belts.

Georgia Powell, 12, a student at Bradley Stoke Community School, entered as a cho dan bo grade, and was crowned the black belt challenge champion after defeating 23 opponents in a knock out style competition.

During the day, Georgia won gold in forms, gold in weapons, and bronze in sparring. She also picked up a silver for team sparring, in which she was joined by junior team members Natasha Statham, Zailan Johnson and Max Halliday. She also teamed up with Natasha and Zailan to win gold in the team form.

Zailan, 7, an orange tag belt, won gold in forms and sparring.

His sister Lexi Johnson, 12, who is an orange belt and trains at the Winterbourne club as well as Bradley Stoke, also competed, scooping herself a gold in sparring, a gold in team sparring and a bronze in forms.

Max, 9, an orange belt, won silver in sparring, while Natasha, who is a cho dan bo, won silver in forms, silver in weapons and gold in sparring, earning her the crown of junior female grand champion.

members also had a successful day, with sabonim Shelley Butler, winning gold in forms and weapons, sabonim Alex Butler winning bronze in weapons and sabonim Martyn Batten winning gold in forms, silver in weapons and bronze in sparring.

Tang Soo Do is a traditional Korean martial art which teaches self-defence, fighting and weapons. It also guides people to live a healthy and harmonious life.

Members of the Bradley Stoke club train every Tuesday night at Baileys Court Primary School.

It caters for people with a wide range of abilities and ages (5yo+).

A

s a photographer, I’m normally very lucky to get into places that most people will never see, as well as being able to document the community and the social calendar that we are so fortunate to enjoy year on year, but on rare occasions I get to bring you something a little more mad.

This month, we had a first at the Bradley Stoke Radio studios, as an owl (well, more her handler) was interviewed live on air. Nick from Avon Owls came in to speak about the charity and brought a little guest with him!

Avon Owls is a charity that cares for rescued owls based in Banwell, Somerset. While the charity isn’t open to the public, it raises money to look after injured and abused birds from donations and by money raised visiting schools, and taking owls to events - both private and public, and from the few open days that it holds throughout the year.

Chico is a tropical screech owl and one of many rescue birds that they have at the centre.

Chico was rescued from a home where she was kept in a rabbit hutch; the sawdust got into her eyes, and the resulting infection

caused her to go blind in her right eye. Despite her rough start in life, the tiny (really tiny- less than a foot tall!) owl was really relaxed and quite happy to sit on her perch while Nick talked about the centre and the upcoming launch of the charity’s new hospital facilities.

She was a born star, taking the interview in her stride and even taking a nap on air!

As an owl obsessive, I was absolutely in my element (although I perhaps spent more time petting Chico than actually taking photographs!).

Because she was so relaxed she was very easy to photograph, and only really fidgeted after she woke up and had a stretch.

A perfect poser, she was great to photograph and I got some images I’m very pleased with!

Hotel staff give nature reserve a royal clean-up

taff from the Aztec Hotel & Spa have taken part in a national initiative to clear up Britain ahead of the Queen’s 90th birthday, which will be officially celebrated in June.

The Clean for the Queen exercise took place from 4th to 7th March and saw an estimated 250,000 people taking to the streets, parks and beaches for the biggest anti-litter campaign the UK has ever seen.

On the morning of Friday 4th March, after consuming a few bacon butties, the Aztec Hotel team headed across Bradley Stoke to the Three Brooks Local Nature Reserve with their bin bags in hand. Thankfully, it was a beautiful day and the reserve was looking stunning.

have recently attended a training session regarding new guidelines that have been published about the menopause by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE). The training session was run by the popular Dr Annie Evans, and was full of positivity for this area of women’s health.

This is important as in the past there has been a lot of negativity surrounding hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which has meant that women may have been put off getting help.

The perimenopause is the time when the periods become irregular and menopause symptoms can start. The actual menopause itself is when a woman has not had a period for 12 months. The average age in the UK for this is 50-51 years. A lucky third of women have no symptoms, but around two-

thirds of us will get hot flushes, night sweats, joint and muscle pains, low mood, low libido or vaginal dryness. This is where the new guidelines can help and your GP can discuss treatments for these problems with you – HRT, other medication, or non-drug treatments. Some people worry about side effects from HRT – the good news is that the risks of

Journal Facebook post goes viral as thousands seek info on mystery flash, noise & power dip

post on the Bradley Stoke Journal’s Facebook page on the evening of 21st March about a “huge flash” in the sky followed by a “weird noise” and a momentary dip in electrical power attracted more than 61,000 views as people across Bristol and South Gloucestershire searched online to find an explanation for the incident.

Readers replying to the post, which quoted a tweet made by someone in Bradley Stoke, variously described seeing “a massive blue flash” or a “really bright flash” followed by a “weird noise” or “buzzing sound” and a dimming of lights.

Many readers also reported that their Virgin Media internet service had stopped working and/or their TV service had been interrupted for a few seconds.

The flash in the sky was seen all over Bradley Stoke, with other reports coming in from Patchway, Stoke Gifford and

Downend. The power dip was experienced over an even wider area, including Bristol city centre.

Theories put forward by readers included a meteor burning up in the earth’s atmosphere, an electrical sub-station fault or an exploding star.

A statement obtained from Western Power Distribution the following day said: “At around 8.40pm in the Bradley Stoke area of Bristol, local residents reported a large flash and dip in electricity. We had a fault on the 132 kV network around this time which may have resulted in a flash of some kind. No customer lost supply and the cause is unknown.”

The Bristol Post reported that the fault was thought to have been on a section of line between Bradley Stoke and Iron Acton.

News Easter egg hunt marks start of spring

John is a resident director of Merlin Housing Association in an unpaid capacity. He not only assists with housing issues but also helps residents with other concerns they may have.

This is well beyond the expectations of the role of resident director and he is highly regarded by the Merlin residents he has helped and supported.

John is also a long standing member of the Stoke Gifford branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) where he has undertaken various roles and worked tirelessly to raise funds and support the RBL’s welfare programme. In the past 14 months, John has acted as Branch Poppy Organiser and in this time has raised a record breaking £94,035 which will go towards supporting the welfare work of the RBL. John is also a trained welfare officer (again on a voluntary basis) for the RBL and regularly makes personal visits to support recipients of welfare funds. He is caring, thoughtful and compassionate towards those he meets.

he start of spring on 20th March was marked with a well-attended Easter egg hunt in the grounds of Baileys Court Primary School.

A total of 169 children and their families took part in the fun event, organised by the friends group at the school.

The eggs that had been sneakily hidden in nooks and crannies had been designed by the primary school’s own art club, which is run by Mrs Morris on Mondays and Tuesdays after school. Each egg held a letter that made up the secret message and those who could unlock the message received a delicious chocolate egg to take home.

Three generations of local families were refreshed with

hot drinks and breakfast butties cooked by member of the friends group, who were pleased to receive positive comments from many of those who braved the chilly morning.

In the past few years, the volunteers on the Friends Committee have raised funds to landscape areas of the playground, provide first aid training for children in Years 5 and 6, supply a new music system for the school hall and refit the children’s kitchen. They have also helped raise valuable funds for community organisations such as Save the Children and Water Aid. Brook Court news from Grahame Holloway

he month of March was one of change for the residents of Brook Court following the Annual General Meeting of their Residents’ Association.

Standing down after three years as the Committee’s chairman was Dave Tovey. He had successfully guided its progress during the first three years of its existence, often an arduous task having to deal with problems which inevitably arise with any new development of Brook Court size. However, his hard work did not go unrewarded for as he handed over the reins of chairmanship he was presented with a case of his favourite wine! His wife, Margaret, was presented with a bouquet of flowers in recognition of her valuable support.

Stepping into Dave’s shoes was Roger Grimshaw, previously the Association Secretary. As such, he is no stranger to the needs of residents and his commercial background will be greatly advantageous when dealing with Management. The role of Secretary will now be taken over by his wife, Gaynor, who

choice who is already actively engaged in the busy social calendar which is a hallmark of life at Brook Court. Although there are already numerous regular weekly events, further expansion now seems to be on the way. In fact, it already started in March with the inception of a ‘Boys’ Club’, a get together in front of the big screen in the lounge to watch major sporting events aided by a bottle or two of wine and a few cans of beer! However, more sober events now in the pipeline include a stamp club, flower arranging and learning computing skills. A number of

Also stepping down as a founder member of the Committee was Molly Cutler, widow of the late Bob Cutler, a well-known and popular Chief Inspector in the Avon & Somerset Constabulary. In Brief Latest news from the Bradley Stoke Lions Club The Lions District Convention at Cwmbran on 6th March gave President Ailsa and Vice President Robin a chance to catch up with fellow Lions from Glantawe to Cardiff, Midsommer Norton to Dursley and all points in between, to discuss business and to learn about the work done by our young LEO’s, our future Lions. The Dinner and Ball on the Saturday night was enjoyed by all, an excuse to dress up and make new friends!

Our Quiz Night at Stoke Bishop Village Hall on 12th March was fun and informative and the supper gave a delicious break. Our team came 3rd, so no wooden spoon for us this year!

Bradley Stoke Lions held an Easter Fund Raiser at the Willow Brook Centre on Saturday 19th March. We gave away 159 Messages in a Bottle (free of charge) to anyone who had a severe medical problem and might need medical assistance in their home. Our thanks to Willow Brook management for their help and support and also to those who gave a donation.

Stokes Singers entertain Frenchay patients and staff On Saturday 12th March, Stokes Singers were pleased to entertain patients and staff at the Brain Injury Rehab Unit (BIRU) in Frenchay with a selection of songs, some of which will be included in their Summer Concert in July.

Ellie Townsend, Stokes Singers chairperson said: “We also had a song sheet with well-known ditties on, such as ‘Pack up Your Troubles’, ‘I Do Like to be Beside the Seaside’ and, the choir’s favourite, ‘The Quartermaster’s Stores’. These were passed out to the audience who were invited to join in if they wished and it was great to see some of the patients doing just that.

Our aim as a community choir is to share our love of singing to all and encourage everyone to join in, which we felt was achieved during a very enjoyable afternoon’. The choir has been invited back to the BIRU to entertain again later in the year.

While rehearsals are in full swing in preparation for the Summer Concert on 2nd July at St Chad’s in Patchway, the choir is actively looking for a new musical director to replace Phillip Lawrence who unfortunately will have to step down from the role due to work commitments later this year. Sue Martin, the choir’s publicity officer said: “Phil will be a hard act to follow.

He has been a popular and

talented leader over the past three years, improving the choir’s performance and making each rehearsal a fun evening.”

Advertisements have been placed and it is hoped that a short list of candidates will be auditioned over the next couple of months.

BSYFC U14 Girls go down fighting in GFA cup final Bradley Stoke Youth FC’s U14 Girls went down 2-0 to AEK Boco in the final of the Gloucestershire FA County Cup on 13th March, reports coach Martin Lee. It was a very tight match where both teams had chances to score. AEK Boco took the lead in the first half when they broke through and shot. Goalkeeper Abbie Pickett saved the shot but it rebounded and hit the striker and the ball ended up in the net.

Just before half-time, Emily Holbrook shot but the defender just got her foot to it and deflected the ball wide of the goal.

Very late on in the second-half, when we were pressing to try and score, AEK Boco had a break away and crossed the ball and their player cut inside to shoot into the net.

Both teams must be praised for the high quality of football on display in the final. The BSYFC girls gave everything and we are all very proud of their achievements.

Arts society lecture on great families and gardens Three great families (the Astors, the Rothschilds and the SackvilleWests) and their gardens are the topic of the South Gloucestershire Decorative & Fine Arts Society lecture on Thursday 21st April.

Caroline Rayman has lectured for many years and is an official guide at the British Museum.

Her talk traces the history of the families, discusses their contribution to life in England and celebrates the splendid gardens that they have created.

Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice

T

he greatest gladiator match in the history of the world! I certainly hoped so as I handed over my debit card to pay for VIP seats.

I decided to play my cards blind by not reading any reviews before watching this film. After its recent release, comments from broadcasters and press alike have been giving the film a volley of mixed reviews.

So here’s my review for Zack Snyder’s Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice - rated 12A. Since its announcement, I had

wondered if it was too soon to push Christian Bale aside and to make another Batman film or even a Superman hybrid spinoff. Still, I thought I would give it a go and offer what some would consider a one sided fight between two heroes, an open and willing mind!

The story picks up as General Zod and Superman (a return for Henry Cavill) are trying to destroy each other whilst annihilating Metropolis in the process. Bruce Wayne (played

by Ben Affleck) is racing through the streets below trying to save loved ones and civilians caught up in the devastation.

In its aftermath, a debate erupts over whether Superman, an earthly god, is the saviour of all mankind or a considerable threat to the world. For Bruce Wayne it is the latter – for him the love affair with Superman must come to an end. Both go head to head and unleash their

hate and aggression through a colossal struggle of combat.

In the background, a psychotic Lex Luther (played by an irritating but almost tolerable Jesse Eisenberg) rises as a secret outsider to conquer Metropolis.

Lex snares both heroes, with the result of them becoming manipulated by his game to bring the deadly conflict to a head.

The choreography of the fight scenes were full of energy, interesting and fast paced, something that the previous Batman films had started to lack. I enjoyed the action – Henry Cavill as Superman, the F1-sounding Batmobile, the gadgets, gizmos and even the continuity through the overlap of previous characters. I even liked how Alfred (Jeremy Irons) played the fuller role of a sidekick rather than a subordinate.

In contrast, Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot (who played Wonder

Woman) were the only real weak points for me. There was only a mere whimper of Bruce Wayne’s millionaire decadence and arrogance that simply personifies this character. Gal Gadot’s introduction as Wonder Women was protracted with her story presented vaguely.

Doomsday’s appearance was the same. The film’s story was muddled and complicated when it didn’t need to be.

Even though it was a very long film, it was very much miss the starters and on to the mains as the film unravelled too quickly.

Maybe Warner Bros rushed out this story to compete with Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War. As a result, the film felt out of sequence, more a fan made dream than the blockbuster I had anticipated. I would give this film a very average but generous three capes out of five.

Local charity announces Players Sprint Triathlon The West of England MS Therapy Centre held a launch party at the Players Club, Chipping Sodbury on Thursday 10th March, to promote it first annual Players Sprint Triathlon that takes place on Sunday 2nd October 2016.

Terri McDonald, head of fundraising, said “The triathlon will be held at The Players Club, one of the region’s most prestigious golf courses. The triathlon course will see participants swim 750m in an open-water lake, cycle 20km through village lanes and finish with a 5km run along the scenic greens of the golf course itself. The event is being held to raise funds for the services we provide at the centre for people living with multiple sclerosis and other neurological conditions.”

“We will be working alongside Triathlon England, the national governing body for triathlons, with their wealth of experience of health and safety regulations.
