Bradley Stoke man jailed for reckless transmission of HIV

Bradley Stoke man who infected two women with HIV after lying to them about his condition has been jailed for five years. Simon Arthur James, 46, was found guilty in November of two counts of recklessly transmitting HIV following a trial at Bristol Crown Court in which experts in virology and HIV healthcare gave evidence. It is the first conviction of its kind for Avon and Somerset Police, while it is only the third time a jury have reached a guilty verdict for this offence in UK legal history – the last time was in 2004. James was diagnosed with

HIV in the mid-1990s but failed to use contraception, attend hospital appointments or take his antiretroviral medication. On two occasions when his HIV status was discovered he claimed he was allergic to latex condoms and that he was taking his medication. He also insisted unprotected sex with him was safe and that he had never infected anyone before. Investigating officer Detective Constable Ben Sullivan said: “Simon James had been aware of his HIV status and yet failed to use his antiretroviral medication or use contraception.” “He was advised of the dangers of unsafe sex and the importance

of taking his medication by healthcare professionals on countless occasions while he also missed up to 49 appointments for viral load monitoring between 1999 and 2014.” “James was aware of the risk to others and chose to ignore them regardless.” “As a result, his victims have suffered greatly and I can only praise them for their bravery.” “This has been an extremely

complex and rare investigation and I am pleased the jury were able to see through his lies and that he has been punished accordingly.” Stephen Dent, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “The HIV virus is highly complex and prosecutions based upon its transmission are similarly complicated.” “We are therefore pleased that, with the help of some of the country’s foremost virology experts, Simon James’ dangerous behaviour has been exposed and he has been punished for the lifelong injury he has caused his victims.” “His selfish and irresponsible approach has had tragic consequences for both his victims.” ● Further details of this case can be found in a court report published by the Bristol Post on 11th December. Schools MetroBus contractor Alun Griffiths builds bridges with schools

lun Griffiths’ Community Liaison Officers Gail Jones and Carys Gwillym visited Little Stoke Primary School on 19th November with the Institution of Civil Engineers ‘Bridge to Schools’ initiative. Bridge to Schools is a handson activity that gives pupils the opportunity to build a model 15 metre long, cable-stayed bridge (the same design as the Second Severn Crossing) from plywood

and aluminium sections, whilst wearing hard hats, high-visibility vests, gloves and goggles. Twenty-three Year Five pupils took part in the session, constructing the bridge successfully. After the bridge had been built, each child and their teachers got the chance to walk across the bridge and test their engineering skills. As well as having fun, pupils have the opportunity to enhance

Local girl’s fast-track rise to karting glory

15-year-old girl from Bradley Stoke has been making a name for herself in the male-dominated motorsport world by winning a succession of trophies in what is only her second year of competitive go-kart racing. Paige Holden, a Year 11 student at Bradley Stoke Community School, first discovered she had a talent for the sport when she went to a karting birthday party

then exceeded all expectations by finishing runner-up in the championship, despite sustaining a nasty injury when another driver ploughed into her kart during a practice session on the penultimate race weekend in September. The recently concluded 2015 season brought even more success for Paige, with victories in both the Dunkeswell and South West championships and

at the TeamSport indoor track in Avonmouth back in 2013. Supported by her mum Claire and dad Paul, a British motocross champion in the 1980s, Paige started racing at the track every Sunday and soon topped the leaderboard, beating male drivers twice her age. Spurred by her initial success, Paige persuaded her parents to buy a kart which she could race outdoors, and, after successfully applying for a competition licence form the Motor Sports Association, she began racing at the Clay Pigeon track in Dorset. Having acquired a full racing licence, she joined the Rotax MiniMax championship series at the Dunkeswell circuit in Devon, and was delighted to be named Rookie Driver of the Year despite competing for only part of the season. Returning to Dunkeswell for the eight-race 2014 season, Paige

being honoured with the Lady Driver of the Year award at the Dunkeswell end of season ball. Paige’s mum Claire said: “Paige has come so far since taking up karting and this season she has been superb in every way.” “The results she’s produced have been fantastic and we’re so proud.” Dad Paul, who admits being “very competitive for Paige”, added: “Not many people could get in a kart and do what she does. It’s very special.” Claire also praised her daughter’s “determination and dedication to the sport”, emphasising the high level of physical fitness required. Paige says she trains at home for around an hour every night, using weights and doing cardiovascular exercises. Her busy schedule of racing three weekends every month means she finds doing school homework

“a bit of a challenge”, but she still finds time to relax by listening to music and watching movies. “I’m one hundred percent committed to the sport, even if it means missing a party or two. In any case, I have so much fun with the other young people at the racetrack.” Asked what her school friends think of her karting achievements, she says: “They know what I do, but I don’t think they really appreciate the speed of it,” adding that she has plans to take a group of them to the Avonmouth track to get a taste of the sport. As well as requiring a big personal commitment, both from Paige and her parents (who drive her to events around the country), competing in the sport also requires a significant financial outlay, not least the cost of purchasing the kart. On top of this comes the cost of renting an

engine (the family is thankful for the support of James Hobbs of Yate based Hobzie Motorsport) and buying two new sets of tyres (wet & dry) for every race. In the upcoming 2016 season, Paige will move up to the Junior Max category, where she will compete with a slightly more powerful engine against drivers up to 17-years-old on circuits like the PFI in Lincolnshire (the UK’s longest track). Beyond that, she hopes to move up to the open-age Super 1 class, but says her longterm ambition is to “race cars”. Mum Claire said: “We’re happy to make sacrifices so that Paige can continue to pursue her dreams, but there’s only so much we can do as a family. We’re hopeful that Paige’s talents will be spotted, enabling her to get the sponsorship necessary to take her racing career to the next level.”

BSCS students show “real commitment” to achieve Duke of Edinburgh Award

he latest group of students at Bradley Stoke Community (BSCS) to successfully complete their bronze and silver Duke of

Edinburgh Awards have been presented with certificates. Both levels of the award involve completing a programme of ‘volunteering’, ‘skills’ and

‘physical’ activities that lasts up to twelve months. The scheme culminates with the ‘expedition’ phase and the bronze award students completed their 24-hour expedition in Cheddar, while the silver award students completed their longer 48-hour version in the Forest of Dean. Tom Hill, associate leader and director of post-16 at BSCS said: “Students should be exceptionally proud of the hard work and dedication completing a Duke of Edinburgh award involves. It is a real commitment, and it is for that reason it is so highly valued by universities and employers alike.”

“This year, our Duke of Edinburgh numbers have grown and we have more students than ever working towards completing the award. We have record numbers (29 students) working towards the bronze award, a good number doing the silver award and we have our first ever gold award group – let’s hope they complete theirs because they would collect their certificates from St James’ Palace!” Other award winners from 2015 who are not in included in the photo are Daniel Davey (bronze), Alice Higginson (silver) Alixander O’Connor (bronze) and Heidi Sermulins (silver).

Letters and Opinions Woodlands Lane fiasco down to bad planning? ‘Woodlands Lane Closure extended to August 2016’ (BSJ website story) – How deplorable! Twelve months to construct a 100yd bus lane? Shame on South Gloucestershire planners! I worked for South Western Electricity Board for almost 40 years. When we were planning construction work, we sent out notices under The Public Utilities Street Works Act (PUSWA). These went to other utilities, highway, gas, water, sewage, telephones, etc. The notice described the proposed works and included a detailed site plan. In a week or so, these plans were received back duly marked by the various authorities showing what they had in the vicinity. These plans were eventually

placed in the construction engineer’s folder, for information. It was usual for him to make early contact to meet other authorities’ engineers to discuss the proposed work on site. Conversely, the other authorities sent us notices and maps of their proposed work. It is vitally important that accurate drawings are made when the actual work is under way, as once all the soil and tarmac is back there is very little (if anything) to see on site. It certainly seems that adequate advance information had not been obtained before detailed planning got under way to design this section. Maurice Leakey Bradley Stoke

Julie S: Why do they bother telling people anyway? Cos they clearly don’t give a sh*t about the local residents caught up in this daily bedlam. Sarah T: I am sick of this whole total farce. Going to and from work at Aztec everyday is a complete nightmare. Suzanne E: This is causing terrible delays. No consideration is given to the impact on local residents or businesses! Nicola C: Can’t believe they carried on with phase 2, taking away the crossings, before finishing phase 1, which is why the roads are busier! Still scared stiff about letting my child walk to school but can’t do anything about it – she’s 13 and I have to work! Jane J: Complete and utter waste of money! We’ll still have a cr*ppy bus service at the end of it! Pointless! Rik R: How hard is it to do a proper survey before starting the work? I’ll grab a shovel and help out to get this done quicker. Who’s with me? I’ve only ever seen a couple of workers at once on the site and two supervise whilst one chap digs.... Crackers. Traffic is a mess, pollution is a nightmare. An extension to the works is unacceptable. They need to put more people on the job so they finish on time. The risk of cost overruns lies with the contractor, not the residents. Christie J: This has caused utter mayhem during rush hour. Aztec and Bradley Stoke is utter gridlock in the mornings and evenings and no one seems to care! It takes me 45 minutes to do a 15-minute journey during the day time. Shame on you Metrobus, local MPs etc. Deborah H: Get the builders to provide lolly pop people for school hours at safe crossing points for all the local schools in the area. Oli S: Good Lord, there are much worse things happening in the world. Paris victims? Then there are the residents of a suburb in South Gloucestershire complaining bitterly about traffic. Bert H: Well, if it takes them nigh on a year to do three yards, Lord knows how long it will take them to complete the many other miles of Metrobust routes! If it’s up and running by 2020, I’ll eat my hat. Graham Y: At least we will get a great MetroBus for three passengers a day to use! Mark W: Unbelievable. A joke trying to get out of that part of Bradley Stoke. A joke this wasn’t known in the planning. A joke that a serious amount of extra resources are not being put into this to reduce this extended works. It’s obvious those who’ve been given the authority to plan and run this either don’t have the ability to and/or don’t care less about the affect on people in the area who have no option but to face this to get out of their own streets. Adam M: Considering the traffic chaos it is causing, a 7 month delay is just a JOKE! Perhaps if they STOP digging up the rest of Bradley Stoke Way and throw more resource into this?… more than the three or four workers they seem have at the moment!… DIY SOS is springing to mind (Dig It Yourself!)…someone please call Nick Knowles. Woodlands Lane closure extended to August

he closure of a short section of Woodlands Lane, where it meets Bradley Stoke Way, is likely to last nearly three times longer than originally anticipated, MetroBus contractors Alun Griffiths have announced. The road closure, associated with the construction of new bus lanes on the North Fringe to Hengrove Package MetroBus route, came in effect on 2nd September 2015 and was originally planned to last for 18 weeks, but local residents were informed on 11th December that “unforeseen circumstances” have led to the closure being extended by an estimated seven months. As reported in the December edition of the Bradley Stoke Journal magazine, problems with a shallow depth gas main and an unexpectedly large and complex network of pre-existing underground cable ducts have meant that a revised design has become necessary for the Bradley Stoke Way / Woodlands Lane junction, meaning it will take longer to complete than originally planned. In a letter sent to residents directly affected by the closure,

Carys Gwillym, community liaison officer for Alun Griffiths, wrote: “I wish to make you aware that due to unforeseen circumstances which has led to design change and programme extension, it has become necessary for Woodlands Lane to remain closed until approximately August 2016. Access will remain via Patchway Brook Roundabout.” “Please be assured, we are making all efforts to complete the work in a timely manner and we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience and understanding, it really is appreciated.” The impact of the delay on MetroBus construction work planned for other sections of Bradley Stoke Way throughout 2016 and non-MetroBus roadworks planned for the Aztec West Roundabout from spring/ summer 2016 (see page 23) is still to be fully clarified. ● A public drop-in session has been arranged at the Jubilee Centre on Thursday 14th January, from 10.30am to 12.30pm, “to answer any queries or questions you may have for the contractors regarding the MetroBus construction works”. Sport First black belts for local jiu jitsu club

ears of hard training have paid off for three members of Bradley Stoke Jiu Jitsu Club who recently became the first in their club to pass their black belt 1st Dan grading. Chris Wills, Matt Brunt and Peter Williams (pictured above, l-r) all started as beginners at the club and are trained by chief instructor, Renshi Trevor King 5th Dan. Bradley Stoke Jiu Jitsu Club train in Jukoshin Ryu – a style with an emphasis on practical, realistic self defence – taught in 55 countries worldwide. The style incorporates a variety of techniques including throws, locks, pressure points, kicks, grappling and weapons. Through membership of the WEBBS martial arts organisation, club members have participated in

many events, including club trips to Poland, Portugal and Spain. Trevor commented: “The guys have trained hard, twice a week for five years, and I am delighted that they have reached this important milestone. This bodes very well for the club as their commitment is a great example for our up-andcoming younger members.” The club runs thriving children’s classes and an active adult class at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre. Adult classes take place on Wednesdays (7pm-9pm) and Friday (8pm-9.30pm), with children’s classes on Fridays (under-10s: 6pm-7pm; age 10+: 7pm-8pm).

Our annual bird box survey has been completed and makes quite dismal reading, as over 10% of the boxes have been vandalised by humans and another 25% of the boxes could not be found, so we may assume they suffered the same fate. In the New Year we will again look into replacing them either with a grant or by public donations and sponsorship.

We have had an incredibly busy year on the reserve, with many changes and challenges which I feel our amazing team of volunteers have managed admirably. The Saturday group completed 1,180 hours on site, which is valued at £16,402, and the Thursday Green Gym group, who run entirely unsupported, put in over 1,860 hours on site, valued at over £26,000. So a huge thank you to everyone who has braved some truly terrible weather to join in this year, whether it was every week or just for a few hours, I know we don’t say it often enough but you’re greatly appreciated and we couldn’t have done it without you!

Money raised from our calendar sales was used to buy some more chest waders, which turned out to be a timely purchase… We were told one of the paths around the tump was completely flooded and went to investigate; after clearing the 10ft high bramble so that we could get a good look, we found the reason for the flooding – the conduit was almost completely blocked with some branches and an inflatable swimming pool! The Green Gym managed to safely clear everything away and the water is now 3’ lower than it was. Dave Reaney reported a lot of litter down by the lake, which we also managed to get mostly cleared and Kris reported a male mallard duck with an injured leg, although he has so far evaded capture (the duck not Kris!). The stone bridge which was reported to us as vandalised has now been repaired. As we’re not able to cover the reserve every week, we rely on the regular users of the reserve to report any problems to us via report-it@three-brooks. info and we’re pleased to see this new system is beginning to work well.

Filton Airfield site sold to Malaysian developer

erospace company BAE Systems has sold the former Filton Airfield to Malaysian developers for an undisclosed sum, unlocking plans for the construction of thousands of new homes on the site. Following the closure of the airfield in December 2012, BAE Systems brought forward redevelopment plans for a major mixed used development on the site and began looking for a suitable buyer in spring 2015. In July 2015, South Gloucestershire Council resolved to grant planning permission for the redevelopment of the 350 acre (142 hectare) site to create 2,675 new homes and 62 acres (25 hectares) of office and industrial employment uses. The site has now been sold to integrated infrastructure

developer YTL Utilities (UK) Ltd, part of Malaysian infrastructure conglomerate YTL Corporation and already known locally through its ownership of Wessex Water. John Benson, partner at Alder King, which helped facilitate the sale, said: “We are pleased to announce completion of the sale of Filton Airfield to YTL. We believe that YTL is the right buyer and look forward to seeing the site developed to create a new and sustainable community for North Bristol. We are delighted to have been responsible for the sale of this strategic site on behalf of our client, BAE Systems.” Mike Craddock, Property Manager at BAE Systems, said: “We wanted to ensure that we chose a buyer with the skills and track record to deliver the vision for the redevelopment of this

regionally important brownfield site.” “BAE Systems will retain responsibility for the remediation of the site and will be working closely with YTL and South Gloucestershire Council to prepare the site for development over the coming years.” Colin Skellett, chairman of YTL Homes UK, chief executive of Wessex Water and also chair of the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership said: “We are delighted to have acquired this significant site which is a strategically important development for South Gloucestershire and the South West region. YTL has a proven track record of developing new communities within Asia and is keen to bring this expertise to the UK. We look forward to working with local stakeholders to create an aspirational development that reflects the history of this very special place”. BAE Systems also reconfirmed its continued support for the

development of the new Bristol Aerospace Centre. As part of its commitment to the aviation heritage of the former airfield, BAE Systems has provided a long-term lease on the part of the Filton site to be used for the centre, plus a contribution of £2.4 million towards the costs of construction. Completion of the Aerospace Centre is expected in 2017. Additionally, BAE Systems also confirmed its continued support for the relocation of the Great Western Air Ambulance and National Police Air Service to a new long term home. ● Cllr Ian Boulton, deputy leader of the Labour group on South Gloucestershire Council (SGC), has raised concerns over a potential conflict of interest as YTL’s Colin Skellett is also the chairman of the publicly-funded West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) which has a role for marketing and developing the airfield. Cllr Boulton tabled an urgent question at a recent meeting of SGC’s Full Council.

Bradley Stoke girl named Cadet of the Year

young St John Ambulance first aider from Bradley Stoke has been named one of the charity’s Cadets of the Year, following a weekend of closely fought competition. Cadets were under pressure throughout, being interviewed, delivering presentations, working together in team tasks, and – most importantly – their first aid skills assessed. In Brief Singing workshop with Stokes Singers Do you want to try singing? It’s a great way to lift your spirits, enhance your life and meet some lovely people. Following the success of last year’s event, Stokes Singers will host a Singing Workshop featuring Wendy Sergeant on Saturday 31st January 2016 from 2pm to 4.30pm at Coniston Community Centre, The Parade, Coniston Road, Patchway, Bristol BS34 5LP. Wendy runs several choirs in the South West, teaching pop, folk, world music, jazz, a bit of classical and songs from the shows – all in glorious unaccompanied harmony. No need to read music; just come along and have lots of fun. The event is open to choir members and non-members, so that even inexperienced singers will find themselves singing unaccompanied four-part harmony without really trying. It’s a great experience if you haven’t sung with a large group before and a great way to enjoy a chilly January afternoon. A charge of £6 includes tea, coffee, biscuits and cake. Runners say: “Goodbye 2015 and hello 2016!” Thank you 2015 for an incredible year at North Bristol Running Group (NBRG), writes Moira de Groot. As individuals, we have performed well, making remarkable progress and seeing some amazing achievements throughout the year. As a team, we have enjoyed incredible support, lots of banter and social engagements including an entertaining Christmas Curry where Alan Wilcox presented awards including Best Newcomer, Biggest Personal Best, Greatest Support and Mr Selfie! At NBRG we like to celebrate achievements and we are delighted that we now have over 615 members on our Facebook page, many of these being regular runners taking part in our evening and daytime runs. During 2015 we have taken over 60 beginners through the ‘Couch to 5k’ program and we are delighted that many of these athletes have gone on to enjoy running in a variety of events. A

team of 45 members took part in the Tewkesbury 10k in 2015 and we anticipate a similar number participating in the Tewkesbury half marathon in 2016. We have six members trained as Leaders in Running Fitness and we love to welcome new runners of all abilities. We now have our own running kit and our runners can be spotted in bright green taking to the streets and paths in Bradley Stoke and the surrounding areas. If you would like to start running or get back into running, come along and join this friendly, sociable bunch. There is no charge for running with the group – simply arrive at the advertised times and there is sure to be someone who will run with you. Our next ‘Couch to 5k’ beginners’ course will start on 29th January and run for eight weeks. If you are interested in joining this eight-week

SGC confirms plan to start new roadworks at Aztec West, in parallel with MetroBus build

otorists in the Bradley Stoke area will have to contend with TWO concurrent sets of major roadworks during 2016 after South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) confirmed its intention to proceed with a 12-month scheme of improvements on and around the Aztec West Roundabout. Commencing in “spring/ summer”, SGC says work will be carried out “in coordination” with the MetroBus construction work on Bradley Stoke Way that is currently scheduled to last until December 2016. Features of the scheme include: • Widening of the A38 approach to the roundabout from the North (from Junction 16) to provide six lanes entering the junction (compared to the existing four). This will enable two lanes to be dedicated to each of the key traffic movements (left to Bradley Stoke Way, straight on to the A38 towards Filton, and right turn to the Aztec West Business Park). • Widening of the eastern side of the circulatory carriageway to provide four lanes through this part of the roundabout (two serving the straight on movement to the A38 south and Filton, and two serving the right turn into Aztec West Business Park). The council carried out a public consultation on the proposals from 5th August to 18th September 2015 and was

due to publish the results by 9th October, but this was delayed by over two months due to the effort required to respond to the “unexpectedly large volume of responses”. The consultation report shows that 41 responses were received, with six of these agreeing with the scheme and 13 disagreeing. Four responses agreed with the scheme but with reservations and the remaining 18 expressed no preference but asked questions or made additional requests. No mention is made of any alterations being made to the scheme as a result of the consultation process. In a ‘statement of reasons’ document published as part of the public consultation, SGC said the work is necessary to “mitigate the impact of traffic arising from new developments”, such as the Cribbs/Patchway New Neighbourhood where 5,700

new homes are expected to be constructed by 2027. A South Gloucestershire Council spokesperson said: “The consultation feedback statement has now been published. We apologise for the delay, this was due to the unexpectedly large volume of responses received, which required input from a

number of different teams within the council.” “The work is expected to last approximately a year. We are currently assessing different traffic management options, however we will issue a press release ahead of the start of any construction works.” “We are working closely with the MetroBus team to phase the construction works in a way that will minimise the impact on road users. The early phases of the construction will take place offcarriageway which will reduce the likelihood of additional delays at the junction whilst the MetroBus works are completing.” A full description of the scheme, along with the consultation report, can be found on the council’s website at http://bit.ly/aztec-1508

Virgin Media network continues to grow Expansion of the Virgin media cable network in Bradley Stoke has continued over the past few months, with pavements being dug up and new street cabinets installed in Wheatfield Drive and Dewfalls Drive. Work in the ‘herbs’ area of south Bradley Stoke appears to be drawing to a close, while the final electrical connections appear to be being made to new street cabinets on Brook Way

that will serve Oaktree Crescent and Stanshaws Close. Information available on the roadworks.org website suggests that Kemperleye Way will be the next area to be visited by the contractors and their diggers. What a difference a day makes! Last month we reported how disappointed we were with the state that ‘Palmers Corner’ had been left in after Western Power had been cable laying in the area. We complained on the Monday, by Tuesday we’d had 3 replies, by Wednesday we had met their team on site, by Thursday it was (almost) better than before. We’re not sure if they are always this quick to respond or whether it was the thought that I would be on site with an axe (for the tree stump) but either way we’re very grateful. Their team, headed by the engaging and professional Nigel, removed the tree root, put down top soil, reseeded the area and put in a new apple tree and a raspberry bush. What a team!

Bulbs

We are, as the weather improves, putting in the 730 bulbs that have been donated to Bradley Stoke from the Bradley Stoke Lions Club, so hopefully we shall see many pockets of colour in the spring. If you know of a public spot that could do with brightening up please let us know where it is.

Plans for 2016

Once we have finished our work on the Common East (our grant deadline is the end of January), we would like to plan ahead for the year. We are very keen to semi-plant some of the roundabouts and other small areas in the town but have yet to receive permission from SGC for any works. We’re also told that they have many areas that they would like us to take on but again months have passed and we have yet to receive any information. n the season of all things festive, we have had a wide variety of options to get us fully in to the spirit of Christmas! However, one of my favourite things by far was our visit from Santa. On 11th December, local residents were called from their houses by the chorus of Christmas music blasting from a trailer as a tractor roared up the street. Not only did it add to creating a special Christmas for a lot of people at this wonderful time of year, but it served a more serious purpose, as Santa’s appearance was completely down to the dedicated team of volunteers who had given up their time to raise funds that will be used to provide soft furnishings and other items for the counselling room at Southmead Hospital’s Emergency Department. It was wonderful to see all the young children coming out of their houses and standing in the street

with their parents as Father Christmas rolled past on his motorised sleigh. Most of the children have probably never seen anything like this in Bradley Stoke before. Whilst this was done fairly regularly in the past, it is the first time I can remember enjoying the spectacle as Santa waved to all the excited children and adults alike. For a brief time it seemed like the entire community joined together – young and old – and there was an overwhelming feeling of Christmas cheer in the air, which was somewhat reminiscent of times gone by. It was an amazing sight to behold, made even more special by knowing that the money raised will go to such a worthy cause. I hope you all had an incredibly Merry Christmas, and I look forward to the variety of things that the community will no doubt get up to in 2016!

Bradley Stoke girl makes her mark in politics

he past year (2015) turned out to be quite a year for Bradley Stoke resident Neha Mehta, an A-level student at The Red Maids’ School. It started with her being elected Bristol Youth Mayor in February, saw her achieve a straight set of A* grades at GCSE in August and ended with a BBC television appearance! After a whirlwind year as Youth Mayor, it was hard for Neha to think of the main highlights but, she said, “Sitting on the Learning City Partnership Board, chaired by Bristol Mayor George Ferguson and the ViceChancellor of UWE was certainly one of them. The group aims to make Bristol a ‘City of Learning’ for all ages, not just young people in full time education and I really support that ethos.” In November, Neha attended the Mayor’s Annual Lecture where George Ferguson spoke

about the future of Bristol and the impact of the city’s status as the 2015 Green Capital of Europe. Neha herself then addressed the audience, speaking of her efforts to continue the

in July and also attending the Business Summit for Bristol as the Green Capital in October. “Attending these meetings and events has given me a real insight into the democratic process involved when making decisions about the future of our city.” Then, in December, to end what has been an incredible year, Neha appeared on BBC1 when she was interviewed for the Sunday Politics Show. She appeared alongside an MP and a Baroness to discuss whether or not 16-yearolds should have the vote. Not surprisingly she argued quite convincingly that they should! With her term of office almost at an end, we asked Neha what had been the best thing about being Youth Mayor. Without hesitation she answered: “Giving back to Bristol,” adding, “I have loved working with different Bristol communities and I do feel like I’ve made a difference.”

News Elderly park home residents hit hard by prolonged closure of Woodlands Lane

esidents of a park home site affected by the closure of a section of Woodlands Lane for MetroBus construction work have reacted angrily to the news that the road is likely to remain closed for seven months longer than originally planned (see page 11). Woodlands Park is home to around 280 residents living in 166 properties and can only be accessed from the section of Woodlands Lane that has effectively become a cul-de-sac whilst the road closure is in place. The diversion of the no. 73 bus route along Pear Tree Road means that the bus stops on Woodlands Lane close to the park entrance are no longer served, severing a vital link for many of the park’s residents, 80 percent of whom are aged 70 and over. Sue Haskins, secretary of the residents’ association at the site, says it can take almost ten minutes for some disabled residents to walk to the nearest alternative stops, adding that the slope up to the roundabout at Pear Tree Road presents a particular challenge for some of them. The lack of a raised kerb at the temporary bus stop on Pear Tree Road is also an issue for many, she adds. The closure of two pedestrian crossings on Bradley Stoke Way is also causing difficulties for elderly residents who need to visit the doctors’ surgery on Brook Way. Mac O’Reilly, chair of the

residents’ association, says he can’t understand why buses can’t continue to serve Woodlands Lane, adding that there is space for them to make a U-turn at a roundabout on Ash Ridge Road, which he claims would “add only a few minutes to the journey”. They have been in touch with their local councillor who has told them that it is South Gloucestershire Council that has determined the bus diversion route and not the operator, First. With Pear Tree Road being gridlocked at peak hours, Sue says it took one resident nearly two hours to travel to Southmead Hospital for an appointment – leaving at 7.45am and arriving at 9.30am. “Why on earth have they started on phase 2 (between Woodlands Lane and the Patchway Brook Roundabout) before completing phase 1 (the Woodlands Lane junction itself)? It’s sheer madness!” Ted O’Sullivan, manager of Woodlands Park, is critical of the overall traffic management that has been put in place around the MetroBus roadworks and says he expects the disruption to get worse when the carriageway has to be raised around the Woodlands Lane junction. “I’d like to challenge our MP, local councillor and someone from the bus company to come down here and see first-hand the effect these roadworks are having our residents,” he adds.

Ask the Doctor with Dr Tim Garrod of Bradley Stoke Surgery Wintertime and the challenges it presents the NHS

t’s that time of year when the nights have drawn in, and the Atlantic storms have been wreaking havoc. We roll up the collars on our coats, hunch up our shoulders, and hunker down for the slog, waiting for the first shoots of spring. Just to add to the burden, it is when the seasonal bugs come out to play, with the familiar collection of temperatures, sore throats, coughs, earaches, aching joints, headaches, and that feeling of trying to run through treacle. On one morning recently, we took one hundred and seventy nine telephone calls from patients wanting our clinical advice or time, in addition to the usual administrative enquiries. A quick back of the envelope calculation tells you that it was incredibly busy, and trying to answer all the calls promptly was extremely difficult. One of the most challenging aspects of general practice is demand management, trying to balance the needs and expectations of patients, while ensuring that vital NHS resources such as appointments, investigations and referrals, are prioritised to the cases where

the clinical need is most urgent. When the system is running at full stretch, it is important that we all do our bit to try and ensure the wheels keep turning smoothly. If you are advised a doctor will call you back, make sure you have your phone with you, and it is switched on. If your repeat prescription needs renewing, do not leave it until you are down to your last tablet to put your request in to your surgery for a new supply of medication. We routinely process

local surgery and your employer. There is no legal need for a doctor’s certificate, and therefore no need for an appointment to request a sick note. Colds and flu will often leave us feeling vulnerable and inconvenienced, and despite the amazing advances in medical science in recent times, there is still no cure. Our immune systems have evolved over millions of years to deal with these episodes, and allowing nature to run its course over a

between two and three hundred prescriptions a day. If you are advised that an appointment with a doctor or nurse is necessary, then take it. It may mean you having to leave the workplace to attend the surgery, but under current employment law, you are quite entitled to take absence if it is on medical grounds. We will do our best to provide for our patients during these intense clinical and financial times for the NHS, but we will all need to work together to make the most of this precious resource. Does your pet need to “battle the bulge” too?

t is that time of year again when many of us are battling the bulge after those extra Christmas calories... But, what about our pets? While most of us are all very much aware of the problems that obesity causes in people, what is not so commonly known is the fact that the same problems can affect our pets if they are overweight. Serious medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, respiratory disease, arthritis and even some forms of cancer are more likely to occur in overweight pets, and ultimately significantly reduce their lifespan. Most often, the causes of pet obesity are fairly simple: pets are being fed too much and exercised too little. With feeding, we see two general problems. The first is over-feeding an otherwise good quality diet. Often owners are not following feeding guidelines – they guess the quantity or they feed on demand, when they think their pet is hungry. The second thing we see is people feeding their pets treats throughout the day, both their own and also human foods. While only small amounts, compared to us our pets are generally also much smaller so a small chunk of cheese is the equivalent calories to almost a third of their recommended

daily intake, and our pets really do struggle to burn off those extra calories. So how can you tell if your pet is overweight? For dogs and cats there are a few simple checks you can do at home: • You should be able to see and feel the outline of your pet’s ribs without excess fat covering. • You should be able to see and feel your pet’s waist and it should be clearly visible when viewed from above. • Your pet’s belly should be tucked up when viewed from the side. While simple obesity is easily managed, there are other factors and health issues that can cause our pets to gain weight so seeking veterinary advice is always recommended if you have any concerns. New-look leisure club to be “bigger & better” New ladies-only gym set to open in early January

embers and guests of Riverside Leisure Club in Little Stoke will be able to enjoy a host of new and improved facilities from early January, following the completion of a comprehensive refurbishment project that began last November. A ladies-only gym, believed to be the only such facility in the local area, has been created on the first floor of the Station Road premises, taking the place of the functional fitness room, which has been moved downstairs into the main gym. A total of 17 fitness stations will be available within the ladies’ gym, while the new and bigger functional training area will incorporate a number of TRX Suspension Trainers plus the

usual range of steps, dumbbells, kettlebells etc. Meanwhile, the free weights area, previously within the main gym, has been given its own dedicated room in a part of the building previously occupied by the Mayhem children’s play area, which closed last year. Another new facility opening this month is a crèche, which will operate between 9.25am and 11.25am, Monday to Friday, to coincide with morning fitness classes. This will be supervised by a team of four qualified and DBSchecked members of staff and will cost just £3 for up to two hours. Other facilities available at the club include a spinning (group cycling) studio, a swimming pool, a whirlpool spa, a sauna and a steam room.

Members can take advantage of a team of seven personal trainers operating at the club, offering a range of skills that covers all needs. Club manager Ali Drury commented: “Some of the facilities at the club were becoming extremely popular, so we felt we needed to expand. This demand-led investment will benefit all our members,
