News Council’s fireworks display raises £2,862 for Mayor’s charities

O

n Sunday 1st November 2015, Bradley Stoke Town Council hosted its annual fireworks event for the thirteenth year running. It was another successful year, where thousands came out to enjoy the fireworks once more.

The Mayor, Cllr Roger Avenin, commented: “I and many others, enjoyed yet another wonderfully successful fireworks event in Bradley Stoke. It’s a fantastic community-building occasion, and it allows us to look back to a noteworthy event in our national history; the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.”

“As Mayor, I would like to take to opportunity to thank a mass of volunteers, who kindly gave up their time to help collect for the mayoral charities. This year, your kind donations at the fireworks raised £2,862.33, bringing a grand total of £7,275.30 collected for the 2015/16 Mayor’s charities to date.”

Feature: MetroBus Build

MetroBus construction gathers pace, but unexpected complications delay re-opening of Woodlands junction

C

onstruction of the North Fringe to Hengrove Package (NFHP) MetroBus scheme in Bradley Stoke and Stoke Gifford has gathered pace over the last two months, with work taking place on Bradley Stoke Way, Great Stoke Way and along the line of the Stoke Gifford Transport Link (known locally as the Stoke Gifford By-Pass), which will link Parkway North with the Avon Ring Road.

However, problems with a shallow depth gas main and an unexpectedly large and complex network of pre-existing underground cable ducts look likely to mean that the closure of Woodlands Lane, which contractors had hoped to lift by Christmas, will now continue into the New Year.

Simon Dunn, area projects manager for Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, explained that a re-design of this area of the scheme has been necessary to raise the road surface to a safe height above the gas main.

Installing drainage pipes has also taken longer because crews have had to resort to hand-digging in order to carefully part bundles of existing cable ducts so that the pipes can be dropped through.

As we went to press, work was starting on the section of Bradley Stoke Way between the Woodlands Lane junction and Patchway Brook Roundabout (near Aldi), where the road will

be widened to accommodate a new westbound bus lane (heading up to Aztec West). To facilitate this work, traffic lanes on Bradley Stoke Way have been narrowed and a ban on vehicles making a right turn into/out of Orchard Gate is due be imposed for an estimated duration of 38 weeks from 7th December.

Over on the other side of Bradley Stoke Way, work is under way to construct a new bus-only left-turn lane onto the southbound A38. Much of the work that has taken place here so far is related to the installation of an underground storm water attenuation chamber.

On Great Stoke Way, which runs under the ‘Blue Bridge’, work to install a new northbound bus lane is well advanced.

Minor modification of the central reservation is also being undertaken, requiring a lane closure on the southbound carriageway.

Beyond the Parkway North Roundabout, where the contractors’ main site compound is located, the line of the new Stoke Gifford By-pass can now be clearly seen, running down to the railway, where Network Rail will soon be moving on site to remove the existing Curtis Lane footbridge and install a new prefabricated bridge to carry the by-pass over the railway.

On the other side of the railway, a large house (Tudor Lodge) has recently been demolished to make way for the new road, which then heads on to cross Hambrook Lane, and then

through open countryside before emerging onto the A4174 Avon Ring Road near Highbrook Park (the new Crest Nicholson housing development).

Trapping of great crested newts (a protected species) along the line of the by-pass was successfully completed by the end of the ‘active season’, allowing construction of the new road to proceed over the winter months.

Around 200,000 tonnes of quarried infill material is required to build the by-pass, and this is currently being brought onto the site, via access points off the ring road and Hambrook Lane, at the rate of 3,000 tonnes (150 wagon loads) a day.

At the southern end of the by-pass route, the 2+ lane on the ring road has been conedoff to allow safe working. Once Bristol Water has completed the installation of a new water main, this end of the new road will be used as a temporary storage area for construction plant.

Subject to weather conditions, the contractors are hoping to have almost the whole route of the by-pass “filled and capped” by Christmas. A temporary crossing will be laid over the Ham Brook, allowing construction plant to pass over the stream prior to the installation of a permanent bridge during a later phase of the project.

News Green bin charge set to be reduced from April 2016

T

he omission of the garden waste collection service from a strategic review of South Gloucestershire Council’s waste services (see facing page) has sparked a political row, with Liberal Democrats accusing the Conservatives of failing to live up to a promise made in their 2015 election manifesto that the opt-in charge for empting green bins, introduced in 2014, would be axed.

Speaking after a meeting of SGC’s Communities Committee on 4th November, Cllr Claire Young (LibDem, Westerleigh) said: “The waste consultation agreed today was their big chance to meet their manifesto promise.

We all know that it would be wrong to promise something you can’t deliver - so my residents are waiting for their free green bins.”

“We were shocked when they voted against even including consulting with the public on this. It shows that they never had any intention of meeting their manifesto promise. They were elected on a false promise, and they have to apologise to residents now.”

She added, “Their attempts to kick this into the long grass by claiming removing the charge was not a change of service were laughable. They’ve nowhere left to hide – they lied.”

Cllr Heather Goddard (Con, Hanham), Chair of the

Communities Committee defended the decision, saying: “The Waste Strategy has been in production since before the election. The whole council had previously, on a cross-party basis, signed up to this strategy and the proposals within it as to where savings in the waste budget might be found.”

Consequently, given that we are aware of Liberal Democrat and Labour opposition to our position of removing the green bin charge, it made sense to separate the issues which have already been agreed to and consider green bins as a separate issue.”

“In our manifesto, we stated that we wanted to remove the ‘tax’ in a financially responsible manner and our pledge was to phase it out.”

“This is a budgetary issue, and, as such, the budget-setting process is the appropriate point to implement our pledge. We are currently preparing plans to introduce our first cut to the charge for the upcoming 2016/17 budget.”

South Glos plans to reduce size of black bin Recycling to be collected weekly instead of fortnightly

S

outh Gloucestershire Council (SGC) has announced proposals to almost halve the size of residents’ black bins in a bid to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, meet recycling targets and save money.

The authority wants to replace existing 240-litre capacity wheelie bins with a slimline 140-litre version, which it would continue to empty on a fortnightly basis.

Kerbside collections of dry recyclables would be increased from fortnightly to weekly in advance of the introduction of the smaller black bins.

The use of bags for collecting recyclables would cease, with residents instead being offered containers in which they can place any type of dry recyclable material. Collection crews would then be responsible for separating the material during collection at the kerbside.

The cost of implementing the changes, including providing the new bins and containers, is put at around £1 million. Once fully operational, the new collection regime is expected to contribute £1 million per annum towards the waste service’s savings target of £2.73 million, set by the council in 2014 and required to be achieved by 2020.

The plans are detailed in the council’s draft Waste Strategy for 2015-2020 document, which is the subject of a public consultation running until 15th

February 2016.

According to the document, analysis shows that, in 2014, 52 percent of the contents of black bins could have been recycled using the existing kerbside service, with the largest contributor being food waste, at 23 percent.

“Our annual waste analysis clearly shows that the capacity in our black bins far exceeds the need for residual waste, it is also a possible dis-incentive for recycling. An [independent] report published in 2015 identified residual capacity as a key influence on recycling behaviour.

By limiting our black bin capacity we will increase recycling in the region of ten percent.”

“A smaller [140-litre] black bin will give more than enough space for non-recyclable waste for a normal household” “There are some households that have and will continue to need additional capacity such as large families or residents with medical conditions. This will continue, but in most cases be limited to one 240-litre bin. The qualifying criteria will be a minimum of six people, or at least three children in nappies. The qualifying criteria for medical conditions will remain unchanged.”

To support households in the transition to smaller bins there will be a comprehensive communication campaign providing advice on how to reduce waste and recycle.

Speaking at the November meeting of Bradley Stoke Town Council’s Planning Committee, Kristy Spindler, waste manager at SGC, stated that the planned changes are expected to be implemented in “late 2016 or early 2017”.

Asked why the draft Waste Strategy document includes no mention of the council’s

Council agrees case for £3.6m redevelopment of BS Leisure Centre Work planned to start in spring 2016

radley Stoke Leisure Centre is to undergo a £3.6 million redevelopment, enabling it to offer exciting new activities for all ages and meet a growing demand for its use.

South Gloucestershire Council (SGC’s) Communities Committee, which met on 4th November, approved plans that will see a redevelopment of the site to enable the centre to meet increased demand from planned new housing and offer improved facilities.

New & enhanced facilities

The plans include: • A new 17-adventure climbing experience • Enhanced soft play facility and designated party rooms • A major expansion of the fitness suite from 85 to 106 stations • Bigger group and multi-purpose exercise studios • A new 12-station toning suite The redevelopment will also

focus on improving customer experience and sustainability, with other changes including: • 130 additional parking spaces • Refurbished changing areas • A café extension Councillor Heather Goddard, chair of SGC’s Communities Committee, said: “The agreed redevelopment of Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre is very good news for both existing and potential new users of the centre, who will benefit from improved facilities and more choice of activities. It will allow the centre to meet new demand in the future and reflects our commitment to encouraging active lifestyles.”

Pre-school supports charity for homeless Abacus Pre-School is once again supporting the Midland Road Homeless Project this Christmas by collecting tinned & packet food and other essential supplies.

The Bristol-based charity provides around 80 meals per day and solely relies on donations from the public.

The Abacus @ Meadowbrook pre-school in Bradley Stoke held a ‘woolly hat day’ on 9th November, when children were encouraged to bring in an item of food and wear a woolly hat for the day in exchange for a £1 donation.

Abacus has supported Midland Road for many years and its donations are always very much appreciated. Collections will continue up until 14th December and further events are planned for next term.

Amanda Lacey, manager of Abacaus @ Meadowbrook, said: “We think that it is especially important for the children to understand the gift of giving during the Christmas period.”

Kenyan headteacher spends the week at BSCS

B

radley Stoke Community School (BSCS) welcomed Mr Zablon Maina, headteacher at Sawa Sawa Academy (SSA) in Kenya, for a week-long visit in November.

BSCS has been partnered with SSA since January 2013, following a visit to Kenya by BSCS teacher Tom Hill which inspired him to set up a link that could benefit both schools and their respective communities.

Mr Hill explained: “The objective of the partnership is to develop a mutually beneficial and sustainable link. We want to support both schools and communities by offering them opportunities to experience how the education systems in Kenya and the UK work, learning from each other and sharing examples of best practice.”

Initially the link grew slowly, with students setting up pen-pal links, small fundraising efforts and some opportunities to develop learning in the classroom.

Then, in July 2014, BSCS took a group of seven Post-16 students out to Kenya and they taught lessons, renovated classrooms and interacted with the students and teachers. They also got to explore the local area – snorkelling, going on safari and enjoying the beach!

A similar trip is currently being planned for 2017, when it is hoped that students will additionally have the opportunity to undertake some community work in Kenya (working at a turtle sanctuary).

Mr Hill continued: “With the help of a grant obtained through the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms Scheme, we managed to arrange for Mr Maina to visit BSCS. This took a great deal of planning - getting him a passport, visa, necessary vaccinations etc.”

In addition to his programme at BSCS, Mr Maina also spent time at two other Olympus Academy Trust schools: Abbeywood and Meadowbrook.

He also took the opportunity to visit Old Trafford (his dream, as he is a big Manchester United fan) and London.

“BSCS students loved having Mr Maina in school and it is great for them to learn about how students from other countries and cultures learn and experience education,” added Mr Hill.

“I think the visit was a huge success and made our link with SSA feel very ‘real’. It was a

pleasure hosting Mr Maina and I know he went back with lots of ideas to use in his school, at the same time as giving us ideas that we could use here. I just hope it wasn’t too cold for him!”

Mr Maina commented: “I had a fantastic time in the UK and can’t thank all the staff and students enough for their generosity

during my stay. SSA will really benefit from this link and I hope this visit will make it go from strength to strength.”

Looking to the future, Mr Hill said; “We are hoping that Mr Maina’s visit will be a catalyst for the link to grow stronger. We are planning for my students to be involved with the pen pal links, and are looking for more opportunities for students to learn about Kenya in their lessons and also thinking about how we can support the school and their community. It would be great if we could sponsor one of the SSA students through their schooling and watch them progress and achieve and have opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise have been open to them.”

“We will also be looking at whether we can get more members of the SSA community over to the UK – perhaps next time we could get some students over?”

Through the camera lens by Becky Ward Bradley Stoke Remembrance ceremony

O

ne of the greatest achievements in Bradley Stoke is the strong sense of community that has grown over the years. This sense of community is seen in action at several points in the year, but at no other event is it more prominent than on Remembrance Day, and this year was no exception.

On 8th November, local residents gathered in and around the town centre to pay respects to those who have lost their lives to war.

The morning started with a parade from the Jubilee Centre, walking to the Willow Brook Centre, while a band played by the memorial.

When the parade arrived, a ceremony took place on the stage with readings from the Scouts, Brownies and Rainbows, and a prayer was said by Reverend Paul Hinckley. This year, the readings were especially poignant as there was a tribute to the Battle of Britain which took place 75 years ago this month.

As a photographer, a remembrance ceremony is difficult to photograph as being respectful is always at the forefront of my mind.

Despite this, I managed to capture some images that I am incredibly pleased with. Having such a strong community in such a large town is something that we can be incredibly proud of, and it is amazing to be able to witness this at so many opportunities throughout the year.

Consultation opens on Parkway to Cribbs MetroBus Extension plans Proposed scheme will see bus lanes created on Gipsy Patch Lane and Hatchet Road

A

consultation on preliminary designs for the Cribbs Patchway MetroBus Extension (CPME) has been launched by South Gloucestershire Council The CPME is an extension of the North Fringe to Hengrove Package MetroBus route which, once complete, will connect to other MetroBus routes which are currently being built, including the South Bristol Link and Ashton Vale to Temple Meads.

The council is proposing that the CPME runs between Bristol Parkway Station and The Mall bus station, via Hatchet Road, Gipsy Patch Lane, through the former Rolls-Royce East Works site, along North Way, under the A38 via the existing underpass at the Combination

A significant element of the CPME project is the replacement of the existing rail bridge at Gipsy Patch Lane. An SGC committee has already approved development of the replacement bridge, which will have a wider span and greater headroom, and provide one general traffic lane and one bus lane in each direction plus shared use paths for cyclists and pedestrians on both sides of the carriageway.

The new bridge will be designed and constructed by Network Rail and is not included in the consultation.

Within the parish of Stoke

Gifford, new bus lanes are proposed eastbound along Gipsy Patch Lane, from the railway bridge to the start of the dual carriageway on the approach to the Hatchet Road/Winterbourne Road roundabout, and south from this roundabout as far as the Sandringham Road/Ratcliffe Drive roundabout.

No new bus lanes are proposed along Hatchet Road or Gipsy Patch Lane in the opposite direction (travelling from Parkway to The Mall), except for a stretch that begins shortly before the railway bridge on Gipsy Patch Lane, nor in either direction along the section of Hatchet Road near the Co-op store (former Parkway Tavern).

The proposals require a strip of land to be taken from Meade Park (resulting in the loss of some trees), the removal of hedgerows on both sides of Hatchet Road south of Meade Park and the narrowing of grass verges and the removal of some trees and hedgerows on Gipsy Patch Lane.

Timescales mentioned in the consultation document foresee planning applications for some sections of the route being submitted in summer 2016, construction starting in 2018 and services operating from 2019.

An accompanying Frequently Asked Questions document

acknowledges that there will be “some temporary disruption” during construction of the CPME, but states that work would not start until after the currently under-construction Stoke Gifford Transport Link (known locally as the Stoke Gifford By-Pass) opens in spring 2017.

Consultation material summarising the CPME proposals is available at www. southglos.gov.uk/CPMEconsult The consultation includes information on the proposed bus priority measures for Hatchet Road, Gipsy Patch Lane, North Way and the San Andreas Roundabout near The Mall.

Cllr Brian Allinson, Chair of Planning, Transportation and Strategic Environment Committee, said: “We are working with other local councils in the West of England area to improve public transport for the benefit of people who live and work in the region. The Cribbs Patchway MetroBus Extension will help to reduce congestion on our roads and improve connectivity for our existing and future communities, thanks to a network of express bus services which will provide fast and reliable journey times.”

Breastfeeding group offers warm welcome to new members

A

local breastfeeding support group is looking to raise awareness of its weekly meetings following a move to a new venue.

Bradley Stoke Breastfeeding Group meets on Thursdays at the children’s centre next to Bowsland Green School.

The aim of the group is to

offer peer to peer support and information for mums at any stage of their breastfeeding journey.

Trained peer supporters are present, and mums and their families are welcome during pregnancy as well as with newborns, older babies, toddlers and siblings. There are lots of toys, as well as tea, coffee and biscuits.

It is a social group as well as a support group and mums are welcome to continue to come along as their babies grow, there does not need to be a particular problem, come along just for a chat and to meet other local parents.

Peer supporter and local mum Caroline Paines says: “I first

attended the group when my son was 6 weeks old. I found it to be a valuable source of information and support. I trained as a peer supporter myself so I could help other mums and their babies.”

“The NHS recommends that babies are breastfed exclusively for the first six months of life, and then continue to receive breastmilk alongside other foods to help them grow and develop

healthily. We hope to help the families of Bradley Stoke to achieve this – every day matters!”

MP welcomes funding for Alabaré veterans’ charity Local MP Jack Lopresti has welcomed the news that the Chancellor has decided to help Alabaré Veterans’ Charity build bespoke accommodation for vulnerable veterans of working age by giving them over £900,000 of LIBOR funds.

Mr Lopresti said: “Alabaré is a fantastic charity which supports vulnerable veterans by providing supported accommodation for exservice personnel to whom we all in this country owe such a debt of gratitude. I have visited the

Alabaré Veterans homes in my constituency a number of times and seen what a fantastic impact they have. I therefore extremely pleased that I have been able to convince the Chancellor to award this funding.”

Latest news from our local football teams It has been a most interesting start to our eleventh year of football for Bradley Stoke Town FC (BSTFC), writes Ian Drew.

After what could be called a very successful previous ten years, our First team now play in the Senior Division of the Bristol & District League, with the Reserves in Division 3 and the A Team in Division 5.

All three teams have had differing starts and now that they have settled into their respective new divisions, results are starting to come their way. The First team presently lie fourth with yet another promotion within grasp. It is not beyond hope and expectation that all three of our teams are able to gain promotion again. Good luck to all those taking part for the remainder of the season.

The Bradley Stoke Youth FC (BSYFC) teams have been well attended again, with the formation of the new Ladies team, who have started their campaign better than expected and hopefully will go from strength to strength.

We believe that with teamwork, hard work and a few laughs thrown in, success can come to all, at whatever level of football they play.”

We were pleased to attend the Bristol Post Sport Awards in October, being one of the finalists in the Community Club section.

Unfortunately, we did not win this time, but were proud to be in the presence of all those other Bristol sporting greats, both past and present.

CBeebies’ Andy Day lights up Bradley Stoke

F

ive lucky families won back stage passes to meet CBeebies presenter Andy Day at the Willow Brook Centre’s Christmas switch-on event on Saturday 21st November.

The Armstrong, James, Jones, Smythe and Stodgell families all won a competition run by Willow Brook on Facebook to meet Andy before he switched on the lights.

Crowds of Bradley Stoke residents gathered at Willow Brook to enjoy the host of fantastic entertainment at the Christmas event. Circus entertainer Steve Kaos wowed audiences on his stilt bike.

Balloon sculptors Balloonatic were a hit with their pop art.

And a roller skating robin and Christmas pudding got everyone into the festive mood.

The fun packed day was compèred by Bradley Stoke Radio with live music in the town square and food from Bert & Gerts. Local musician Julia Barrella – the winner of the Bradley Stoke’s Got Music talent competition also performed at the event.

Santa took hundreds of present requests in his grotto and then joined Andy Day to switch on the Christmas lights at 5pm.

Bradley Stoke in Bloom report for November

Palmers Corner

We have been very pleased with our ‘Palmers Corner’, not only with its vast improvement but, whenever we are working there, the number of people who come over to say thank you. Although SGC have yet to give us permission to take over this patch, or to respond to our request that they add the grass cutting to their schedule, we remain hopeful! One of the apple trees was not thriving so we replaced it with two more (fruit trees are best when planted in pollinating pairs) but we were very disappointed when the following day we discovered the area had been dug up. Although the trench has now been filled, the raspberry bush and an apple tree have been lost and the new grass left resembling the Somme.

We have approached Western Power to ask how they intend to repair the damage caused and are pleased to report that they are looking into it.

The Common East

We swapped our November workday from bulb planting (it was just too wet) to the Common where we were joined by builder Steve who installed a gate to the orchard and repaired the damaged seat. Thank you to Steve and to the neighbours who bought us hot drinks to keep out the cold! We also managed to put in a temporary repair to the pond’s overflow and to remove much of the duckweed that was covering the pond, while being careful to return all the rams horn snails and sticklebacks. This pond has really benefited from our attentions and is looking much healthier already. On the path to Cornfield Close, the high winds had brought down two trees and left several more at a dangerous angle, so we bought down all of the unsafe trees and used one to make a new informal seat.

Willow Brook Centre

Can it really be a year since we joined forces with Almondsbury Garden Centre and the Willow Brook Centre? The five planters, including the herb and kitchen planters have seen quite a few changes over the year, and although not everything we tried was successful, we feel they do brighten the town square, so we were very pleased to receive from Andy Wynn, Willow Brook Centre Manager and Megan Dickens, Operations Manager a rather large cheque for £500, which we hope to partly spend on the roundabout at the entrance to the town centre.

Break in

We were disappointed to hear that our tool store had been broken into again, although the shed wasn’t vandalised and nothing was taken, several of our tools had been ‘borrowed’ and some (a pair of shears and a lawn trimmer), are now damaged, as are the doors. It is doubtful we could make another insurance claim, so if we can’t get the tools repaired we will just have to replace them ourselves.

Poppies

But on a positive note, we were glad our Halloween decorations were enjoyed and our signs ‘Bradley Stoke – Enter if you dare’ were taken with good humour. Not wanting to encroach on the Scouts’ plan to decorate the town square with poppies, we put ours by the Manor Farm roundabout and on the Savages Wood roundabout and we were greatly surprised but very pleased to see just how very popular our giant poppies were. Sadly, storm Abigail wasn’t so kind and she did leave them rather battered and in need of running repairs, perhaps next year we should make them out of something other than kite fabric!

Drink & drug drivers to be ‘named and shamed’ over festive period

ith Christmas nearly here we’re reminding everyone about the dangers and consequences of drink and drug driving.

Operation Tonic, our annual month-long Christmas & New Year campaign to make the roads safer for all, began on 1st December.

As usual, we will be naming every motorist who is charged with a drink or drug driving offence during the festive period.

Anyone ordered to appear in court on suspicion of having committed a drink or drug-driving offence will have their names and details published online and made available to the media.

Traffic officers will also be using ‘drugalyser’ devices at the roadside to test drivers for suspected drugs, including cannabis and cocaine, using new laws that came in earlier this year.

A statutory speed limit of 20mph could soon be introduced on roads around Wheatfield Primary School in Bradley Stoke.

South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) recently staged a public consultation on plans to reduce the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph along the entire lengths of Wheatfield Drive, Dewfalls Drive and Harvest Close.

The purpose of the scheme is to reduce traffic speed in the vicinity of Wheatfield Primary School, which will “improve road safety for vulnerable road users as well as making walking and cycling to school more attractive”.

The move follows a decision made by SGC in September 2013 to implement 20mph limits/zones outside all South Gloucestershire schools “as a matter of priority”.

The council says it is hoped that the proposed scheme will be implemented during 2016.

News Free journey-sharing website launches for Aztec West Business Park

D

rivers exasperated by peak-time congestion at Aztec West can now use a map-based online journeysharing website to travel more sustainably. joinmyjourney launched on Wednesday 25th November, thanks to funding from South Gloucestershire Council’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF), development from resource efficiency specialist ecosurety, with support from North Bristol SusCom. The free-to-use site enables commuters travelling by car, bicycle or on foot to find others to share compatible journeys to work, either regularly, or as a one off. It is initially aimed at commuters in the West of England but there are also plans to open it out to educational organisations and business centres nationally. joinmyjourney is launched first for the 8,000 people travelling to Aztec West, with other business locations and employers coming on board in 2016.

workers explains, “Every day I would see single drivers sitting in traffic queues, waiting to get into the park. I’d started an off-the-shelf car share scheme for ecosurety employees, but it just didn’t have the scale, was too complex and too limited to make a significant dent in emissions and the number of vehicles.”

Ben was bemoaning the issues to an officer at the LSTF one day and the pair agreed Aztec West needed a bespoke solution, which also appealed to walkers and cyclists. Ben took the idea back to ecosurety, and following further financial support from the LSTF

and ecosurety, development started on joinmyjourney.

Benefits include fewer cars on the road, improvements in parking, lower emissions, and helping drivers save money by cutting commuting costs. Others include less stress from sitting in traffic queues, improved confidence from increased outside exercise and the option to share sustainable and safe journeys during the winter.

The site gives commuters an option to find journey sharers ahead of 12 months of roadworks, scheduled to start in spring 2016, which are aimed at improving

Users specify the start point (via postcode) and the end point of their journey. Using an interactive map they identify potential sharers on the route, and can also specify their preferred mode (walk, cycle or car). Users then choose to message other users who most closely fit their needs, to plan their journey share, and the way can be easily amended if the default route doesn’t match the user’s preferred journey.

Once registered, users can also specify other key information, such as the days and times that they usually travel and state their preferences – i.e. smokers, nonsmokers, or to only share with somebody of the same sex, etc.

Advice on how to journey share safely is also provided, while users need to be working fulltime, part time or contracted by an employer with an official work email address, to take part.

Roll-out plans

A number of large employers and business centres in South Gloucestershire and the Greater Bristol region have already expressed an interest in the scheme. Apple, Android and Windows app versions of joinmyjourney are due to be launched in the New Year.

The pilot initiative at Aztec West is free to businesses, thanks to funding from South Gloucestershire Council’s LSTF. A graduated fee structure has been created for other organisations, with revenues going into a nonfor-profit fund, to ensure the scheme is able to cover its costs.

Verity Heal, LSTF project manager at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “joinmyjourney is a great example of how we are working with the business community to help resolve shared challenges.

This is one of many schemes that we are delivering across the area to help take cars off the road.

F

or Christians, December 25th marks the anniversary of the birth of Jesus. Whether you follow a religion or not, it is a chance for some time with family and friends to celebrate the holiday.

Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to be at home, and many people in the health and emergency services will keep going. We appreciate the sacrifice they make. One important area is maternity services, with much more involved in a birth nowadays than finding a handy stable.

A Christmas baby is exciting and daunting, but actually December is not the busiest time for having a baby. The autumn sees the highest birth rates, so if you are planning a pregnancy now is the time to get into shape. Start taking folic acid (available from the pharmacy) which decreases the risk of your

baby having spina bifida. This is a condition which can affect mobility and continence. Folic acid is best started 3 months before conception. Getting into shape in terms of reducing alcohol levels, stopping smoking and looking at diet and exercise will all reduce your risk of pregnancy complications.

Once pregnancy is confirmed by doing a home pregnancy test (confirmation by a GP is not usually required as the tests are so sensitive now), you need to let your surgery know. Different surgeries have different systems: at Bradley Stoke Surgery we have an on-site midwifery and health visiting team. Your GP is the link through the whole time: we may be involved if there are complications such as bleeding in early pregnancy or hyperemesis (severe sickness) right through to giving your baby his or her first

Maternity care and good standards of living mean that the whole process is a lot less risky than in Jesus’ time, when it was estimated that a third of babies would not make it to adulthood. After the birth instead of a house full of wise men, sheep, frankincense and myrrh (hopefully!) we wish you a relaxing and peaceful time.

Young chefs show skills in Rotary contest

F

ive students from Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS) and a sixth from Marlwood School took part in the local round of the Young Chef of the Year competition on Wednesday 25th November – an event organised by Bradley Stoke Rotary Club.

Each competitor was set the task of preparing a two course meal for two, comprising of a main course and a desert, on a budget of £10.

The winner on the night was Keeva Holder (Marlwood), with Ciera Burns of BSCS taking the runner-up’s spot.

Keeva, whose menu consisted of crab, chilli and rocket pasta followed by chocolate and caramel soufflé tart, now goes

forward to the regional final of the Rotary competition.

Currently studying food technology at A-level, Keeva is hoping to win a place to study for

a Grand Diploma at the world famous Le Cordon Bleu in Paris.

She is adding to her experience by running her own business baking cakes for special occasions.

The winner was presented with a Mall Cribbs voucher to the value of £30 and a Bradley Stoke Rotary Apron, the runner-up a £15 voucher and an apron.

November in the Three Brooks nature reserve

have been vandalised or damaged by squirrels, so we are looking to replace them. It has been suggested that residents could either donate a bird box or they could sponsor one, and we will be looking into this.

W

e’ve had a very busy couple of months on the reserve, as well as the usual maintenance work, meetings, training courses and organising public walks we’ve added dog rescue and calendars to our résumé!

We were lucky enough to have Chris Sperring MBE – Conservation Officer with the Hawk and Owl Trust (HOT) lead this year’s Owl prowl. Although less than 50% of the people who had booked tickets turned up, those who did were in for a treat as they were stalked through the woods by one of our Tawny Owls.

Although there were many fabulous pictures to chose from, ‘Sunlight through the trees’ taken by local photographer and group member Ed Soldat was finally chosen to represent the reserve.

The calendars are available to buy for just £5.00 either from treasurer@three-brooks.info or from 07497006676. We will use the money raised from sales to buy some more chest waders.

Release programmes

After a visit to Secret World Wildlife Rescue, we are in discussions about using the reserve as a release site for harvest mice, as SGC have already given their permission for this we are hopeful it may happen sooner rather than later. We also asked for permission for two squirrels to be released, but that was not possible. I personally love hares and would love to see them up on the tump, so if anyone knows of a few spare ones that are looking for a home…

Thank you to Andy Wynn for allowing the group to use, for free, the conference room at the Willow Brook Centre for our meetings, this has meant that we will be able to use the money saved for the benefit of the reserve. News 85,000 new homes needed in the West by 2036 – but where should they all go?

P

eople in the West of England are being urged to take the opportunity to shape the area’s housing and transport provision for the next 20 years by participating in a major consultation that runs until 29th January 2016.

Leaders of the area’s four local authorities (Bath and North East Somerset Council, Bristol City Council, North Somerset Council, and South Gloucestershire Council) are encouraging residents to give their views on emerging options for the provision of new homes and associated infrastructure.

The West of England needs to plan for more homes if it is to meet the area’s growing need for housing and continue to be economically successful. It has been calculated that the area will need 85,000 new homes by 2036.

With 56,000 currently planned or approved, options as to where a further 29,000 homes could be built are being explored.

The options are part of the councils’ emerging Joint Spatial Plan and Transport Study which form the basis of their consultation to shape the development of housing, employment space, transport and infrastructure provision until 2036.

They have been set out on a series of indicative maps for people to examine during the three-month consultation.

Although all options are up for discussion and debate, partners agree that the focus for new housing should be on previously

developed land to minimise the need for developing green space.

Leaders from each of the four local authorities welcomed the launch of the public consultation, with Cllr Matthew Riddle, Chair of South Gloucestershire Council, saying: “We want to build a better future for our children, to ensure they have the same or better access to homes and jobs we have now. At the same time we want to protect our environment and prioritise development close to supporting infrastructure.”

“Together, we can do both. We should not shy away from this, but take the initiative and tackle these issues now, so that people in every part of the region and future generations can enjoy a sustainable future. The plan sets out an ambitious 20-year vision for getting housing built at a pace that meets local need and is affordable, whilst maintaining and building places that communities are proud to call their home.”

In line with national policy, brownfield development is to be prioritised over encroachment into the Green Belt wherever possible, preserving and promoting the quality of environment that the West of England enjoys.

Speaking at a media briefing held to launch the consultation, Stoke Gifford councillor Brian Allinson, who is leading for South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) on the development of the Joint Spatial Plan, emphasised that it is essential for the four local authorities to “work together as a team”, in order to be best placed to win funding from central government.

Brian Glasson, Head of Strategic Planning and Housing at SGC added: “We want to have a clear set of options ready for when funding opportunities come along. We need to have the right schemes ready in the pipeline.”

Let’s talk about Occupational Therapy

M

any of us take for granted every day activities such as getting dressed, making our meals and accessing our wider community. However, there are many individuals who can find these tasks a barrier to leading a full and active life. At this time of year these problems can be more apparent as the nights are longer and it is colder outside. Also, as we age, we may find that some activities are more challenging.

An Occupational Therapist can work with individuals to help find solutions and strategies to enable them to remain as independent as possible, and to help reduce the likelihood of injury. The type of intervention will depend on the problem and the individual goals.

For example, when working with an individual on falls prevention, the Occupational Therapist may look at recommending changes to an individual’s environment. This can include reviewing lighting, especially at night, looking at suitable footwear, reducing trip hazards and ensuring things are easily to hand, including a method to summon help. It may also include working with other professionals, such as a physiotherapist, to work on an individual’s balance and core strength.

adaptive equipment. There are many products available on the market from simple dressing aids such as long handled shoe horns to more expensive specialist chairs. An Occupational Therapist can advise individuals on the best products to meet their needs and to assist them in achieving their relevant goals.

Occupational Therapists help educate individuals how to engage in activities within their personal ability. This can include finding strategies on how to remember things when your memory is poor and educating individuals on how to access local services such as dial a ride and local support groups.

Occupational Therapy is not just for disabilities, but an holistic approach to help individuals overcome problems with the activities of daily living.

Five Top Tips to make your Christmas less stressful!

2. Use the power of the list.

Whether it’s Christmas shopping or cooking preparation, having a list of all you need to buy and do, helps bring order to the process and makes you less likely to forget things.

3. You don’t have to please everyone. Christmas is often about balancing the wishes of a variety of family and friends, but if that makes you feel that you are being torn in two, you need to stop. It’s OK to say to people, “Let me check and get back to you.”

4. Have spares! Have a few generic presents in reserve in the event of surprise visitors. And of course, have extra bits and pieces

in the store cupboard in case you need to knock up a quick meal for visitors who rock up unexpectedly.

5. Make time for yourself! You are no good to anyone if you are so stressed you turn into a banshee the minute someone asks you a question. ions from Bradley Stoke have played their part in keeping the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) helicopter flying.

The club raised £500 through a variety of fundraising events, and visited the GWAAC base at Filton Airfield to present the cheque.

It costs £2.3million a year to keep the helicopter operational, and the charity receives no day-to-day funding from the government or National Lottery. Therefore, the support of groups like the Bradley Stoke Lions is vital to ensure that GWAAC can continue to provide this life saving service.
