Local schools’ aerospace art hunt takes flight

M

ore than 60 sculptures inspired by the local aerospace industry have gone on display at locations across north and central Bristol, marking the culmination of an exciting schools and community project for the Patchway, Bradley Stoke, Filton and surrounding areas Patchway Community College has been working with My Future My Choice, professional artist Matthew Jeanes and the Bristol Aerospace Centre to deliver an exciting project to nine primary schools about the local aerospace industry, exploring its vast history and discovering how it could be a part of their future.

The project has engaged more than 3,000 pupils, giving them the opportunity to work with 35 business and 35 industry volunteers along with 12 volunteers from the Bristol Aerospace Centre and a professional artist to create

a large number of sculptures inspired by the aerospace industry and decorated in a variety of themes.

The Great Aero Art Hunt runs until Monday 31st August, with 63 sculptures in 25 locations including local libraries, schools

and local sports centres as well as Starbucks Aztec West, Asda Patchway, Specsavers Bradley Stoke, The Mall Cribbs Causeway and the Royal West of England Academy in Clifton.

Parents, pupils and the public will be able to hunt for the globe-

New BSCS primary all set to welcome first intake in September

T

he new primary phase building at Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS) was formally handed over by construction firm Midas on 15th July, in good time for the first intake of 30 Reception-aged pupils to start in the second week of September.

Funding for new primary-age school provision on the BSCS site was secured in July 2013, when it was confirmed that South Gloucestershire Council had made a successful bid to the government’s £982 million Targeted Basic Need (TBN) programme, which is intended to provide more school places in areas of high demand.

The new building has been

constructed on an area that was previously used as a secondary car park for the main school.

Planning permission was granted on 1st August 2014, allowing the secondary parking area and cycle storage that were previously on the site to be moved to the opposite side of the main school building during the summer holidays. Construction of the primary phase building then commenced in September 2014.

An ‘all through’ school

The addition of the new building has transformed BSCS into an ‘all through’ school for the 4-19 age range.

The headteacher for the BSCS primary phase, Sharon Clark, was appointed to the role in December 2014 and formally took up her post in April.

She has worked closely with Meadowbrook Primary School (also a member of the Olympus Academy Trust, to which BSCS belongs) to share expertise and learning ahead of welcoming the first cohort of primary-aged pupils to BSCS in September.

The school has also appointed Geraldine Rogers as Reception teacher and Nicola Burge as teaching assistant. The three teaching staff will be joined by a number of administrative staff

moving across from the main BSCS building.

Over a hundred applications were made for the 30 Reception class places available in September 2015.

Primary-age children at BSCS will wear a plain white polo shirt (with optional BSCS logo) and the same teal coloured sweater as the secondary phase students.

Latest technology

All classrooms in the new building will be equipped with wifi and iPads and the school says the primary-age curriculum will include lots of extra opportunities in addition to the foundations of reading, writing and numeracy, with baby ballet, sports coaching and Irish dancing already arranged. Pupils will also benefit from a comprehensive Forest School programme, thanks to the close proximity of Savages Wood.

Schools Approach to the main entrance of the new primary phase building at Bradley Stoke Community School

The school says there will be plenty of opportunities for pupils to engage with older students through learning and enrichment as the school grows.

A spokesperson said:

“Integration will be key, and will ensure that the transition from Year 6 to Year 7 is seamless. Traditionally, students experience a dip in progress between these two years as they

acclimatise to a new school, make new friends etc. Our pupils will not face that at all, which can only benefit their progress and achievement.”

Start and finish times for the new primary phase(which has its own ‘walk-through’ entrance) have been staggered from those of the secondary phase, to ease potential congestion.

The provision of optional ‘wrap around care’ from 7.30am to 6pm will also help by extending the period over which pupils arrive and depart.

The first day in school for the new primary-age intake will be on 9th September and pupils will spend their first full day in school on 21st September, which will be celebrated with a balloon launch.

An official launch event for the primary phase will take place in October, when pupils will help bury a time capsule in the grounds.

News decision by South Gloucestershire Council to allow the construction of a new helicopter base on green belt land near the Almondsbury Interchange has cleared the way for formal planning permission to be granted for an aerospace museum and learning centre on the former Filton Airfield site.

The scheme was originally approved in March, subject to the completion of a legal agreement, as part of the site is currently used as a base for the police and air ambulance helicopter services.

With councillors giving the goahead for a new helicopter base for the two emergency services in Almondsbury, the museum plans have now been formally approved.

Construction work on the Bristol Aerospace Centre, which will have Concorde as its centrepiece, is expected to start later this year. It is scheduled to

open to the public in 2017.

Welcoming the news about the aerospace centre, Cllr Matthew Riddle, leader of South Gloucestershire Council, said: “Finding a permanent home for Concorde at its birthplace in Filton is fantastic news for the people of South Gloucestershire and for the iconic aircraft which will be preserved for future generations to enjoy.”

“Once up and running, the museum is set to become one of the most popular visitors’ attractions in the West, bringing many economic benefits to the region while celebrating the history of the aerospace industry past, present and future.”

As well as providing an indoor exhibition space for Concorde, World War 1 aircraft hangars will be refurbished for the display of the Bristol Aero Collection along with a full range of visitor facilities.

Virgin set to bring cable to thousands in BS

T

elecommunications company Virgin Media looks set to extend its cable network to thousands more homes in Bradley Stoke just months after BT completed a state-subsidised project to bring superfast broadband to more than 3,000 homes in the town.

The company is yet to make an official announcement, but information publicly available on the roadworks.org website shows that the firm has registered plans to lay several kilometres of ducting along streets in a number of areas in Bradley Stoke from 21st September (see panel, left).

Another sign that work might be about to start came when local MP Jack Lopresti tweeted (on 10th July) that he had “met with @virginmedia to discuss more investment in ultrafast broadband in Bradley Stoke”.

“Supercharged expansion” The speculation is further supported by the news that several Journal readers who had previously registered an interest in having the Virgin Media cable network extended into their streets have recently received emails from the company informing them: “Your area is part of our supercharged expansion plans”. The messages promise that “ultrafast broadband speeds of up to 152Mbps” will be available once the work is carried out.

Until very recently, Virgin Media (and its forerunner Telewest) invested little in

extending the coverage of its cable network, the bulk of which was installed in the 1990s, preferring instead to invest in upgrading technology to boost speeds for existing customers.

However, a radical policy shift was revealed in February 2015 when the company announced ‘Project Lightning’, which has the aim of extending the Virgin network to four million additional premises over the next five years.

Virgin Media, owned by Liberty Global, will invest an extra £3bn in the project, mainly financed through borrowing. It will create 6,000 jobs and apprenticeships in what the company claims is the single largest investment in digital infrastructure in the UK for more than a decade.

On 22nd June, Virgin Media announced that Manchester would be the first city to benefit from Project Lightning, with an extra 150,000 premises in the city

scheduled to benefit from ultrafast broadband for the first time.

When asked for a statement

by The Journal, a Virgin media spokesperson would only say: “We are currently considering a number of areas for our expansion plans, including Bradley Stoke, but we are unable to provide any further details at this stage.”

Bradley Stoke triathlon set to have a full field

S

ports enthusiasts in South Gloucestershire have snapped up over 100 of the places available for Bradley Stoke’s first triathlon, being held on Sunday 30th August.

Active Centres, in partnership with South Gloucestershire Council and Triathlon England, is hosting the sprint event which consists of a 400 metre pool swim at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre, an 18km cycle and a 5km run. The cycle ride will be held on closed roads along Bradley Stoke Way to ensure the event is safe as well as fun, while the run will mainly be along paths in the Three Brooks Nature Reserve.

As we went to press, organisers told The Journal they expected the race to be fully subscribed by the end of July, but anyone interested in taking part is

advised to check the event website, theactivetriathlon.com, for the latest news.

Two of those who have committed to the challenge are locals Nick Groves and Simon Ward, who are both hoping to set personal bests.

Nick, aged 28, is the assistant manager at Kingswood Leisure Centre and decided to enter the triathlon as one of his fitness goals for the year. Although a keen swimmer, he has only attempted a couple of sprint triathlons in the past and says that his cycling will be the biggest challenge.

He said: “I am pretty strong in the pool but the cycling is where I am going to lose the time.

Hopefully, I can make some of it up in the run.”

Bradley Stoke Way road closure on Sunday 30th August In order to stage the Active Triathlon event (see facing page), Bradley Stoke Way will have a road closure in place between 6am and 2pm on Sunday 30th August.

All traffic will be re-routed via Brook Way. The road closure will extend between Patchway Brook Roundabout (near Aldi) in the north and Baileys Court Roundabout in the south.

The bike race course will stop just short of Patchway Brook Roundabout, so will not infringe upon the roundabout itself.

In Brief Bowls club bracing itself for charity event Bradley Stoke Bowls Club’s main fundraising event for the charity BRACE will be a fun match on Sunday 16th August played out in fancy dress by ‘Vicars v Tarts’.

BRACE has grown from a small group of enthusiasts, who in 1987 started the Bristol Research into Alzheimer’s and Care for the Elderly (BRACE), to become a major player in the support of research into this important health issue.

major changes on the approach to the Aztec West Roundabout and reconfiguration of the Woodlands Lane junction.

MetroBus build expected to start soon as contractors move on site

T

he two year construction phase of the Stoke Gifford By-Pass and the Bradley Stoke section of the North Fringe to Hengrove Package MetroBus route looks set to get under way within the next few weeks following the news that a contractor has been selected.

The contract for the Stoke Gifford Transport Link (SGTL, as the by-pass is officially known) and the Bradley Stoke Way MetroBus works has been awarded to Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd of Abergavenny, the same firm that is currently constructing the South Bristol Link section of the MetroBus route.

A spokesperson for the West of England Office, which is overseeing the MetroBus projects, told The Journal that work on both local aspects of the scheme is due to commence “this summer” and that residents can expect to see contractors moving on site “from August”.

On the SGTL route, Alun Griffiths will be working alongside Dawnus, who have been appointed to construct a new bridge across the Ham Brook and Network Rail’s contractor (still to be selected), who will construct a new bridge over the main London to South Wales railway at Curtis Lane.

ith all the great weather we’re (sometimes) enjoying, lawnmowers, hedge trimmers and pressure hoses are out in gardens everywhere, giving would-be burglars a few ideas about easy pickings.

We don’t want to put a dampener on your summer – and, actually, burglary is at its lowest level to date – we just want to make sure that your home is secure inside and out.

Don’t give thieves shedloads of opportunity. Consider the total value of the items in your shed and fit appropriate locks and alarms to protect them.

Did you know – the average contents of a garden shed are worth £1,000?

Here are some helpful tips to prevent you falling victim to burglary: • When you have finished with

your tools, including ladders, make sure you put them away in a secure location out of site.

• Fit a metal grille on any garage or shed windows to secure them.

• Screen shed or garage windows using curtains or frosted glass so contents from within cannot be seen.

Use a ‘Sold Secure’ “ close-shackled padlock” • Fit a shed or garage alarm.

• Permanently mark bikes and power tools with your postcode and registering them for free at www.immobilise.com • Use a ‘Sold Secure’ closeshackled padlock to secure a hasp and staple fitted with coach bolts or tamper-proof screws on both your gate and shed.

• Invest in timers for your lights and radio to give the impression that someone is at home.

• Get a family member or close

Pre-season training under way at Aretians Aretians RFC’s senior teams are now back into pre-season training, every Tuesday, 6.45pm8.45pm. Dancers heading for West End stage

S

tudents from a local dance school are looking forward to living out their dreams by performing on a famous West End stage next month.

A group of 36 performers from the Sharon Phillips School of Dancing, around half of whom live in Bradley Stoke, will be treading the boards of Her Majesty’s Theatre on Sunday 20th September when they take part in a Young Performers Show.

The two dances they will perform are a classical ballet, with ‘the seasons’ as the theme, and a hoedown, combining modern/ jazz dancing with line dancing.

For the classical piece, the girls will be wearing tutus (imported from America) that reflect summer, winter and autumn, while the hoedown costumes are being specially designed and made for each performer.

Dance school owner Sharon Phillips said: “We have taken groups before to Young Performers and have always had an amazing and positive experience. Giving the girls the opportunity to dance at Her Majesty’s Theatre, using the dressing rooms of the actors and working with their production

team is just so inspiring for them.”

The school runs classes at St Chad’s Church Hall in Patchway on Saturdays from 9am-1pm.

Further classes are held in Alveston on weekday afternoons & evenings and Saturdays.

Dance styles taught at the

school include tap, modern and ballet. All teachers are registered with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) and are DBS checked.

Classes currently cater for children aged two-and-ahalf years upwards, but from

September the school is starting new toddler ballet classes for children aged 18-months to twoand-a-half years.

MS Therapy Centre appeals for volunteers

T

he West of England MS Therapy Centre in Wheatfield Drive, Bradley Stoke is on the lookout for new volunteers to work as oxygen chamber operators.

The centre provides treatments and therapies to people living with multiple sclerosis (MS) and other neurological conditions in the Bristol and surrounding area.

For over 30 years, MS therapy centres have been offering oxygen therapy as it can help relieve a number of the most common symptoms of MS. The centre currently has 14 volunteer oxygen operators who between them run 26 oxygen sessions a week, Monday to Friday during opening hours.

On average there are 115 people using the chamber every month.

People accessing oxygen therapy have varying levels of mobility and care requirements. Around 75% of centre members have multiple sclerosis but the centre also caters for people with neurological conditions and offers services to anyone who would benefit from the therapies.

Current members accessing oxygen therapy include those with broken bones, cancer, stroke, ulcers, fibromalgia, ME and Parkinson’s amongst others.

Doro Pasantes, centre manager, said: “As a small charity the MS therapy centre relies heavily on volunteers and

the oxygen chamber operators are very much a part of our community. Over time they get to know our members and many of them have been with us a long time. We couldn’t run our services and benefit so many people without them.”

Team work

The oxygen chamber is run with two volunteers at any one time.

The operators have different skill levels and it is possible to become an operator trained to a basic level within a couple of days. The number of sessions means that anyone with time to spare can train up quickly and will be able to help run sessions for members.

The role is varied, but as well as learning the technical aspects of operating an eight-seater oxygen chamber, there is also the care and support that is needed by members using the chamber.

The reasons why volunteers have become oxygen operators are varied. Angela, a longstanding volunteer explains: “The smallest gift I can give is volunteering. I love seeing the joy on people’s faces, it pleases me knowing I’m making a difference to their lives.”

Mike, who also helps as a volunteer driver, feels that “the atmosphere of the centre is very friendly and positive”.

help I was able to train as an oxygen operator. As well as the satisfaction of helping other people, it gives an opportunity to meet and make new friends.’

Oxygen therapy is a treatment where a person breathes in pure oxygen while under increased air pressure. Under pressure, the oxygen content in the blood and in different body tissues increases and it can help speed up the healing process.

Emma, a current centre member, regards the centre as a safety net. She uses the oxygen therapy for relief from symptoms.

“The oxygen has helped me to be able to walk up the stairs more easily and participate in activities after work and at the weekends.”

Required skills

A key part of the role is to talk to members during sessions in the oxygen chamber, providing much needed support, not only to the members but also to carers, someone with great communication skills and a strong willingness to learn would be the ideal operator. The minimum age is 18 years and all operators will have a DBS check.

News Wheatfield Primary contributes knitted mini-Shaun to John Lewis charity trail

W

ith ‘Shaun in the City’ fever sweeping through Bristol, pupils from Wheatfield Primary School in Bradley Stoke have contributed to a ‘mini-Shaun trail’ that is taking place within the John Lewis store at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway.

Partners (staff) and local schools were asked to get involved and knit mini-Shauns that would later form part of the trail. Decorated by pupils to represent their school, and customers’ children to represent various departments in store, the 21 Shauns have been strategically hidden throughout the branch, waiting to be discovered.

The hunt will last until 31st August and shoppers can take part by making a minimum donation of £1 at the haberdashery department on the second floor.

All entries will be put into a prize draw to win a £100 gift card to spend in John Lewis.

All money raised from the hunt will be donated to The Grand Appeal, which supports the Bristol Children’s Hospital.

The pirates land at 11am when children can meet and take a selfie with one of the UK’s leading Captain Jack Sparrow lookalikes.

He will be looking for apprentice pirates to join his crew.

There will be walkabouts throughout the day from the comedy duo Pirates of Menspants.

The two dashing, bearded, sea shanty-singing pirates will recruit new shipmates aboard their barnacle covered ship.

There will also be a free pirate-themed craft workshop for children at the event.

BS Community Singers’ concert a big hit

radley Stoke Community Singers’ (BSC Singers’) summer concert drew a large and enthusiastic crowd to Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS) on Tuesday 14th July.

Hayley Batty of BSC Singers said: “Rehearsals for the event started way back in January. We had some great soloists and duets this year and we were also joined by the choir of Wheatfield Primary School who were absolutely fantastic and we hope to work with them again in the future.”

The BSC Singers were formed in 2012 and they are looking forward to celebrating their third anniversary in November.

Hayley continued: “Over the last three years, we have formed a core group of around 40 people who attend every Tuesday evening, and these people make our events possible. We have a wonderful, diverse group who come from all walks of life

with different nationalities and different careers and interests, but somehow it just seems to work.”

“We love that we are a community choir - anyone is welcome at anytime and it is completely FREE of charge.

There are no auditions, and you would be under no pressure to sing at any concerts should you just want to come along for fun every week for a sing along.”

The group meets at BSCS every Tuesday evening during term,

Carnival fun over the bank holiday weekend

T

he Third Bradley Stoke Carnival is being held this year on Saturday 29th August on the Jubilee Green, at the Jubilee Centre on Savages Wood Road and the Carnival Committee have pulled out all the stops to try to bring you a great day of family friendly fun and entertainment.

The parade, which this year has ‘party’ as it’s central theme, will be made up of members of the public and local community groups and will leave Brook Way Activity Centre at 11am, led by the magnificent City of Bristol Pipes and Drums. Cllr Erica Williams, the chair of South Gloucestershire Council, and Bradley Stoke’s mayor, Cllr Roger Avenin, will then lead the main body of the parade, which will have a group of noisy Indian drummers at the rear!

With traditional carnival whistles for all in the procession, it will be a bright, colourful, and noisy affair as it moves along Brook Way, so please pop out to lend your support and join in the fun.

It is anticipated that the parade will arrive at the Jubilee Green carnival field at approximately 12pm (the carnival field opens at 11.30am).

This year’s music and entertainment programme on the stage will hopefully have something to keep everyone happy, including a return visit from the Twerzels, who managed to not only bring the house down but a sky full of rain last year! We have an awesome Cher tribute act all the way from Las Vegas via Taunton! Ian Scott brings us his Tribute to Sir Tom Jones, Princess Elsa to keep the young ones happy and, to close the evening, Angel Heart Rocks.

Around the site, you will find a traditional style Punch & Judy with shows at 1.30pm and 3pm for the kids both young and old, a variety of commercial, community

and charity stalls to browse and, if you fancy it, face painting provided by the team from Jump (we only ask for a small £1 donation to the mayor’s charity fund).

The popular classic and kit car display returns this year and will hopefully be bigger and better than last year, although the car owners always try to out do each other by polishing their pride and joy, so we are not really sure how they can improve on automotive perfection. However, just to put the pressure on a little bit, we are awarding trophies for the three best turned-out cars on the day.

We can see the polishing rags coming out already!

An area in front of the stage will be roped off for community acts and displays plus, a first for the carnival, and possibly even Bradley Stoke, is a special fire breathing show!

Stilt walkers and mascots will also be wandering around the carnival field at various times throughout the afternoon and the Bristol Bus Preservation Group will hopefully be bringing an open top vintage bus to run free trips around the town.

A licensed bar provided by Bradley Stoke Football Club will be open all afternoon.

Hot air balloons are featured again this year, with planned launches across the carnival weekend, both mornings and evenings. The balloons are not operated by the carnival and the pilots will independently make a ‘go, no go’ decision based upon the anticipated weather conditions at the time.

Please note that there will be no parking available on site or on Savages Wood Road, however you can park at the Willow Brook Centre, as they have kindly agreed to suspend the car parking time limit for the day of carnival only.

This event offers two rides; one is a family-friendly 15-mile ride suitable for riders of all ages, using local pathways and quiet roads and the other is a 50-mile cycle through the beautiful South Gloucestershire countryside, taking in the pretty little village of Castle Combe, nestled in beautiful surroundings on the edge of the Cotswolds.

It is named the Martin Dean Bristol Bikeathon after a local resident who sadly passed away from leukaemia in September 2012. Martin was an avid cyclist

and also one of the founder members of the local Stokes Cycling Club, who Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research are teaming up with to stage the event.

Bikeathon organiser Jo Bray said: “The Bikeathon is a perfect opportunity to get out, get fit and join in the fight against blood cancers, which affect thousands of people in the UK each year. In Brief Lions serve those in need – at home and abroad New Lion president Ailsa hosted our first IT sharing forum where laptops, tablets and phone problems were discussed, mostly sorted, while sharing a wide selection of party food. The first time that IT problems became a very enjoyable social event.

Bradley Stoke Lions’ purpose is to raise funds to help those in need in our district and to assist those who need help. Our motto is “We serve” and is not just with money but with friendship.

A young local boy has just left for America for a very serious operation. A very scary prospect for the family – a strange town, no familiar faces and the worry of the operation. No! Awaiting them is an American Lion who will welcome them, comfort

them and be there for them. This is the third time we have asked our fellow Lions to help like this and each time they roared “We serve” and did. We send Morgan our best wishes and know he has guardian Lions around him.

Bradley Stoke Lions would like to thank Riverside Leisure for collecting 100 pairs of used spectacles. Willow Brook in August: Bradley Stoke’s Got Music!

Local musicians and bands are being given the opportunity to showcase their talents during August, thanks to the Willow Brook Centre and BSR. Willow Brook has joined forces with the community radio station to launch Bradley Stoke’s Got Music. The competition is open to singers, musicians or bands with members over 14 years of age who live in the BS32, BS33 or BS34 postcodes.

The winning act will get a ‘Live Lounge’ session on BSR 103.4FM Drive Time and the chance to perform at the Bradley Stoke Carnival on Saturday 29th August, as well as at Willow Brook’s Christmas lights switchon event in November.

Shortlisted musicians will be asked to perform live in heats on Saturday 15th August in the town square at Willow Brook, in front of a panel of three judges. The final will take place on Saturday 22nd August, also at Willow Brook.

Bradley Stoke in Bloom – July’s activities

By Sara Messenger of Bradley Stoke in Bloom (BSiB) lthough some of the group have been away, others have been putting in some overtime. As well as extra weeding and watering, two of us spent a very hot afternoon putting in 100 tubers in the Jubilee Green Garden and the Manor Farm Corner.

This month we have put in our first butterfly garden where the Common East joins Cornfield Close. As well as installing

favourite plants: cabbage, corn chamomile, prairie broom, trefoil birds foot, wild mignonette, sheep sorrel, nasturtium, garlic mustard and scarlet pimpernel!

Nettles are also a favourite food plant for many caterpillars but we thought there were already enough of those around.

We were cheered along by Byron, aged 3, who seemed very taken with our butterfly boxes, by his mum who brought us all hot chocolate, and by a number of cats who kept us company while we worked, including ‘Elvis’ who kindly took care of our lunch for us!

Keeping the kids busy

Butterflies can also be helped by leaving an area of long grass in your garden. Grass is a larval food for many of the brown family and some whites, but they do get mown along with the grass, so they need a small patch of grass to be left to grow. You could add some wildflowers and create your own mini-meadow. Bees and butterflies also need water but often drown in deep dishes, so get the kids to make their own by filling a shallow dish with water then adding some marbles.

Exhausted bees can be saved by giving them heavily sugared water to drink and watching the ants share this treat is quite fascinating.

Our town centre ‘kitchen garden’ planter continues to grow well and we couldn’t resist testing the strawberries and sugar snap peas. Letters and Opinions Road safety: The Meadowbrook melee I read the article in your July issue entitled “Meadowbrook pupils march for road safety” with interest [see photo below].

Sadly, the article made no mention of road safety education for the parents of these pupils.

As a resident of The Culvert, which is opposite the school, I am forced to run a gauntlet if I want to drive down my own street on a weekday afternoon. The amount of inconsiderate, illegal and downright dangerous driving and parking on the residential streets

around the school on a daily basis is astonishing, and it’s frankly a miracle that no child or parent (to my knowledge at least) has yet been hurt as a consequence.

I invite any offending parents to respond with an explanation as to why they think this behaviour is acceptable, and in return I will happily point out a minimum of five instances of dangerous or illegal parking in the vicinity of the school on an afternoon of their choice.

• Don’t hide discoloured or cracked toenails with polish. If it’s a fungus, it needs treatment – polish can make it worse.

ere is some excellent advice to help ensure you spring into summer with healthy, gorgeous feet: • Wash your feet every day in warm soapy water, but do not soak them for long periods of time, as this destroys the natural oils. Dry carefully, especially between your toes, and put your feet up – literally – for 10 minutes each night.

• If you can see and reach your feet, regularly trim your toenails using nail clippers and cut them straight across. Avoid cutting down the corners as this can cause in-growing nails.

File your nails if it is easier, or arrange an appointment with a podiatrist who will cut your nails for you.

• Use a footfile prior to showering or bathing. If the skin is dry, use a good quality moisturiser all over – except between the toes.

• Do wear well-fitting shoes and vary the type of shoe and heel size. Slip-on shoes are better as occasional wear. Straps or

News FREE summer play scheme for 5 to 11 year-olds now under way at BSCS

T

he annual FREE summer play scheme for children aged 5 to 11 is now under way at Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS).

Running Monday through Friday until 21st August, the play scheme is run by the Four Towns Play Association, which receives financial assistance from Bradley Stoke Town Council.

The aim of the play scheme is to ensure children have fun over the school summer holiday and also to provide a break for parents. It is designed to support children in the local area to play and learn, in the presence of others, in a safe and child-friendly environment.

Children attending the sessions take part in arts and crafts, sport and team games. There are also

visits from sports coaches, dance teachers and library staff.

Sessions run from 10.30am to 12.30pm, closing for lunch and are back in operation from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. It is essential children are collected during the lunch period as the play scheme is not covered by insurance during that period.

There is no need to book, just turn up and complete a registration form. The scheme runs on a first come first served basis, so please arrive promptly to avoid disappointment.

Similar sessions are being held at venues in Patchway, Filton and Stoke Gifford.

New bus route will provide direct link to Southmead Hospital

A

new bus service being introduced by First from Sunday 23rd August will introduce a much called-for direct link between Bradley Stoke and Southmead Hospital.

The new 77 service, which will operate hourly Monday to Saturday daytime, will also serve another major local hospital, the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Running between Thornbury and Bristol city centre, the new service will follow the route of the current 83 between Thornbury and Parkway Station. From there it will travel via Southmead Hospital to Westbury-on-Trym, from where it will follow the route of the current 520 to the

city centre via Henleaze, Cotham and the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

The 83 and 520 services will be withdrawn from the same date.

Entering Bradley Stoke from the Aztec West Roundabout, buses on the new 77 service will travel down Bradley Stoke Way to the Patchway Brook Roundabout (near Aldi), before traversing the full length of Brook Way, and on to Parkway via Orpheus Avenue and Hatchet Road.

The route of the new 77 service is very similar to one proposed to First and South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) by Bradley Stoke town councillor Tom Aditya almost a year ago, in response to requests from local residents.

At the time, SGC’s transport operations manager Roy Steele said the route “might not be commercially viable in the current economic climate”, but promised he would discuss it with First.

Timetables for the new service will be available from early August on the First Bristol and Bath website (but are already available on the Traveline South West website). Hard copy timetables will be available from mid-August.

Other local bus services being changed from 23rd August include the X18, which will now run between Kingswood and Southmead Hospital (instead of Aztec West) and the X74 Bradley Stoke to Bristol city centre service, on which additional journeys will be introduced

between UWE and the city centre.

The local changes are part of a raft of service alterations being introduced across the wider Bristol area. Jenny MacLeod, general manager for First in Bristol said: “These changes will create new bus links between hospitals, schools as well as where people live and work. We have worked hard with local residents to ensure that the bus services are working for the communities we serve.”

“Bus services in and around Bristol are increasingly popular and this is great news. We have increased the amount of time we give many buses to complete their routes to try to iron out those routes that are suffering punctuality issues.”

his month I would like to draw our attention to dementia: to raise awareness, find out how we can help and what to do if you are worried about your memory.

Dementia affects 850,000 people in the UK, so for Bradley Stoke that is 350 people. This is an important issue and has been prioritised this year by the NHS with extra resources.

The commonest type of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease but there are many others.

Residents’ pre-registration scheme to be introduced at Sort It sites

P

eople living in South Gloucestershire will soon need to pre-register details of their residency and motor vehicles in order to use local authority Sort It waste disposal and recycling centres, such as the one in Station Road, Little Stoke.

Each resident will be able to register up to two vehicles per address, either online, over the phone or in person at one of the council’s One Stop Shops.

On entry to a Sort It site, vehicle registrations will be checked using automatic number plate registration (ANPR) technology and non-registered users will be asked to leave.

The cost-saving measure, which is intended to prevent people living outside South Gloucestershire using the sites, will be introduced from 1st April 2016, with residents being given at least a three month period to register prior to implementation of the checks.

The scheme is one of a number of options put out for public consultation last year and subsequently agreed by South Gloucestershire Council’s

Communities Committee at its recent meeting on 22nd July.

The committee also voted to reduce opening hours at all Sort It sites by opening half-an-hour later (at 8.30am) and closing at 4.30pm all year round, i.e. abandoning the current later summer closing time of 6.30pm, with effect from 1st October 2015.

One positive change to come out of the review is that the Little Stoke site will once again open on Wednesdays, with effect from 1st April 2016, in order to “manage new housing growth in the area prior to a new facility coming

online in 2019/20”.

Other measures agreed by the committee include clarifying the definition of a van to include any vehicle with no side facing rear windows, no rear seats or an open back (or one which is separate to the cab), introducing a system of electronic permits for users of vans and limiting the number of times a van can visit to 12 times a year. Permit applications for vans registered to a business will be declined, although the council’s officers have been asked to develop a scheme to allow people who use

either their sole trader vehicle, or a work vehicle they’re permitted to use personally, to transport household waste.

Current restrictions on the times that vans can visit Sort It sites will, however, be lifted.

Options to restrict (or charge) for the disposal of items classified as “non-household” such as plasterboard, hardcore and tyres, were not progressed due to negative feedback received through the public consultation, although it is noted that these types of items are, in any case, no longer accepted at the Little Stoke site as a result of changes recently introduced in an effort to improve safety.

It is expected that full details of all the agreed changes and new registration procedures will be made available later in the year.

Sort It sites have seen an increase in tonnages since 2012-13 with an 11 percent increase in 2013/14 to 35,009 tonnes and a further projected 5 percent increase in 2014/15 to nearly 37,000 tonnes. The increase in 2014/15 is in part due to an estimated 52 percent rise in the amount of garden waste deposited at the sites following the introduction of a charge for kerbside collection (dubbed the ‘green bin tax’).

Golf marathon raises £1,220 for cancer charity Bradley Stoke resident Nigel Johnstone has raised £1,220 for Prostate Cancer UK through a sponsored event that saw him complete four rounds of golf, non-stop, in a day.

Nigel and close friend Jon Bodman completed the challenge at Woodlands Golf & Country Club, taking 11 hours 28 minutes and covering just over 16 miles with 818 combined shots.

The rounds were donated free of charge by the golf club.

Advertising Feature Apprenticeships: The pathway to careers

lex Eden, 23, from Yate, started an Apprenticeship in Business Administration in the summer of 2013. She completed her apprenticeship at SGS College and now works within the College’s Suited Booted Recruited (SBR) team, who provide tailored courses to help people get back into employment.

Alex initially met her work colleagues as a participant of the SBR course. SBR tutor Louise Slessor said: “Alex was one of my students on the SBR course and she was a delight to teach.

Her motivation and enthusiasm rubbed off on the other students and her witty sense of humour made the two-week course really fun for all of us; so when the team decided to recruit an administration apprentice, she was the first person I thought of.

I knew she would be a huge asset to our team and I was not wrong.

She builds amazing rapport with all of our learners and partners and has become an integral member of the team.”

Alex, who completed the Level 2 qualification in 2014, is now awaiting certification for completion of the Level 3 business administration qualification. She has also been promoted from apprenticeship administrator to apprenticeship coordinator, which provides more responsibilities and a pay increase.

Alex said: “I was thrilled when my two weeks on the Suited Booted Recruited course turned into a full time apprenticeship and I have learned so much over the last two years. The Level 3 was more challenging, but the college and my work friends supported me every step of the way. I’ve made some great friends here at SGS College and I enjoy going to work every day; it makes you feel so accomplished when you get feedback from learners saying that the course has really increased their confidence. Looking to the future, I am going to move on to the Level 4 Business Administration qualification, which will be equivalent to degree level.”

News Stokes Singers’ successful summer concert

By Susan Martin he Stokes Singers’ summer concert on 27th June was a great success. On a lovely summer’s evening, a large audience was entertained by the choir and individual members performing a selection of songs about places around the world.

The programme included: ‘Don’t Cry for Me Argentina’, ‘Wonderful Copenhagen’ and California Dreaming’ as well as a Croatian love song ‘Plovi Barka’ and a stirring African folk song ‘Thina Simunye’. Videos of some of the songs can be viewed on the Stokes Singers’ Facebook page.

The audience were also invited to join the choir in singing three well known songs: ‘White Cliffs of Dover’, ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’ and ‘Lambeth Walk’ which they did with gusto.

Some lovely comments were recorded in our comments book as well as via emails, some of which are shown above (see panel).

Our nominated charity this year was Great Western Air Ambulance and we were delighted that our concert raised £428 to help support this great organisation providing emergency

Award for local Poppy Appeal organiser Terry Webber, joint Poppy Appeal organiser for the Stoke Gifford branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL), has been presented with a certificate of appreciation for 12 years of “extraordinary, determined and dedicated service”.

Under his stewardship, the amount raised by the branch’s annual Poppy Appeal collection has risen from £12k to £48k.

The award was presented at the branch’s ‘thank you’ dinner in June, an annual event to which all local RBL volunteers are invited.
