Meadowbrook pupils march for road safety

P

upils from Bradley Stoke’s Meadowbrook Primary School joined over 100,000 children across the UK taking to the streets on 10th June as part of the Giant Walk.

Organised by road safety charity Brake and sponsored

by Brantano, the initiative aims to get children walking and highlights the importance of road safety in helping them lead active, healthy lives.

Schools taking part get their pupils to walk (in a crocodile of supervised kids, holding hands on safe pavements, or around the school grounds) which gives children a voice, helping them tell drivers to slow down and look out for people on foot.

Across the country, children walked a combined total of over 60,000 miles, learning about road

safety and calling on drivers to ‘GO 20’ within local communities, in order to make streets safer for walking and cycling.

To coincide with the event, Brake revealed survey results that show the biggest factors stopping parents letting kids walk and cycle to school are not time or inconvenience, but the dangers of fast traffic and a lack of safe routes.

Kerry Trotman, class teacher and travel ambassador at Meadowbrook, said: “We’re delighted to be taking part in Brake’s Giant Walk. It’s a fantastic opportunity for kids to make their voices heard and promote road safety to children, parents and local drivers. Our pupils enjoyed marching and shouting out loud about the importance of drivers slowing

down in our community, so families can enjoy a healthy, fun, active lifestyle without being endangered.”

Jack Lopresti, MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke, said: “This is a fantastic way of getting children walking to school and helping them understand the importance of road safety. Walking means better health and less congestion

and I am happy to support this initiative. ‘Running fever’ growing in Bradley Stoke

By Moira de Groot of North Bristol Running Group hanks to the efforts of Alan and Sheila Wilcox and their band of helpers, ‘running fever’ is spreading around Bradley Stoke at a great pace. A fabulous team of runners, dressed in the new North Bristol Running Group green kit, took part in the Bradley Stoke Festival 10k on Sunday 7th June. Much fun was had before, during and after the run and it was wonderful to see all the participants from the different areas of the running group coming together at this local event.

Although the achievements at the 10k race need much praise and recognition, the main highlight of the weekend was seeing a group of 30 plus beginners taking on the 5k Little Stoke parkrun on Saturday morning. Many of these runners could not even run 50 yards six

weeks before they joined the North Bristol Running Group’s Beginners’ Course, but they did it and they did it in style! One runner said: “All the beginners

were amazing and I have made some lovely friends. I can’t wait for the next chapter for us all. Feeling proud!” Huge congratulations to every single beginner – it is a marvellous achievement. The beginners now move on to the Improvers’ Group and hope to see more progress.

The next Beginners’ Course will take place in the autumn.

If you would like to start running or get back into running, come along and join this friendly bunch. There is no charge for

running with the group – simply arrive at the advertised times and there is sure to be someone who will run with you.

The group meets on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 6.30pm and the School Run group meets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9.15am. All runs start from Bradley Stoke Surgery.

Plans unveiled for ice rink complex at Cribbs

P

lans have been unveiled to build a new permanent indoor ice rink, together with a skydiving and ski centre, at a site in Cribbs Causeway.

The proposals are part of a vision by the developer, Baylis Estates, to introduce an ‘active sports’ theme to the entertainment and retail opportunities available in the area and make Cribbs Causeway a ‘day-out’ destination.

The new facilities also include a sports store, hotel, restaurant, coffee ‘drive thru’ and car showroom and will be developed on land next to The Venue.

This site had previously been earmarked for the proposed Concorde Museum until an alternative museum site was secured through an agreement last year between the Bristol Aero Collection Trust and neighbouring Filton Airfield owner BAE Systems.

Prior to submitting a planning application, Baylis Estates is carrying out a community engagement programme and as part of this, a public exhibition was recently held at The Mall.

David Mace, Director at Baylis Estates, said: “Our ambitious plans for the site include building a flagship permanent indoor ice rink so that residents across the district and the wider West of England area no longer have to travel to other parts of the country to access this sort of facility all year round.”

Fire breathers to warm up August carnival

By Andy Ward, Bradley Stoke Carnival Committee hings are going well with the Carnival Committee’s preparations for this year’s Bradley Stoke Carnival which takes place on Saturday 29th August. The parade commences at 11am (route to be confirmed) and arrives at the Jubilee Green

on Savages Wood Road at around 12pm. Good weather would help, so please do keep your fingers crossed for a nice sunny day!

We have been able to introduce some new elements for this year’s event, including a fire breathing show and, after the success of last year’s vintage London bus rides around the town, we are hoping this year to have an open top vintage bus to again run a circular route around the town. A traditional Punch and Judy show will also be featuring this year, entertaining both the young and the not so young!

Stall pitches are beginning to fill nicely, with a good mix of community, charity and commercial hirers confirming.

Carnival parade

The parade is looking as though it will be well supported once again, its theme this year being ‘party’, so you can dress up in fancy dress, your party clothes or, with community groups coming on board, perhaps your uniforms – it’s really up to you!

The team who will be providing the fire breathing show will also be walking on stilts in the parade and then wandering around the carnival field in the afternoon, alongside a couple of mascots including (subject to change) characters from Frozen and a Minion.

The demonstration area this year will be in front of the stage and will play host to the community groups who have come to show their skills – in between performances by bands on the stage. Demonstrations are still being confirmed, but are likely to include GKR Karate, the Chinese Association performing the dragon dance and the fire breathers.

This year, live music is being hosted on a slightly larger stage and I’m pleased to announce that due to popular demand, the Twerzels (a Wurzels tribute band) have agreed to perform once again alongside other acts including an 80s covers band and the excellent Angel Heart

Rocks. We still have a couple of free slots on the stage, so if you are involved in a family-friendly band that will appeal to all age groups, then please do contact us.

We are putting together a great line up of live music with something to suit all tastes, with the emphasis being on “bring a picnic and sit and enjoy a familyfriendly afternoon of live music and entertainment on the Jubilee Green”. The live music will be broadcast by Bradley Stoke Radio from their event trailer and their presenters will also be working on live shows broadcast from the event – so if you can’t make it on the day, you can tune in and still enjoy the live music.

The car show is also making a return this year, as it has proved so popular in the past, and some

vehicles that have not been seen before at the carnival have already confirmed attendance, including, for petrol heads, an AC Cobra.

Fun fair

The fun fair will be making a return visit and will be open from the Thursday before the carnival and across the bank holiday weekend and will feature a family-friendly range of sideshows and rides including the perennial favourite, dodgems.

Beavers raise over £500 for Guide Dogs charity with the new Scout Association project ‘A Million Hands’, calling on every Scout in the country to help improve the lives of those affected by disabilities.

Incredibly, the Beavers were able to raise in excess of £500 for the charity. However, the most amazing personal achievement was the effort of one young Beaver in particular, Jemima Grinter, who raised an amazing £170!

Jemima’s leader, Beena Chheda said: “Jemima did a wonderful job with her brother Austin and sister Chloe (both in Cubs). Their Mum said that they went to each and every house on the street and contacted all their relatives to raise money for the Guide Dogs.”

Katherine Robinson, Assistant Group Scout Leader (Beavers) said: “Our Beavers have done so well with this challenge and Jemima is the embodiment of what Scouting is all about. he 1st Bradley Stoke Beaver Scouts have been busy fundraising for Guide Dogs, one of the Scout Association’s partnered charities.

As part of their St George’s day commemorations, the Beavers were set a series of sponsored ‘Knight’s Challenges’ to complete at home. These were designed to demonstrate their core promise of “doing their best” and being “kind and helpful”, and

included helping with the dishes, making their beds and getting themselves ready for school (not easy when you are only 6 or 7!).

All four Beaver colonies have also been lucky enough to have a visit from Guide Dogs planned over the next few weeks, when they will get the chance to meet the dogs and learn more about coping with blindness as part of their Disability Awareness badge.

Annette brought along Guilda, her new puppy and John was accompanied by Dez, his own expert guide dog, who won the prestigious Guide Dog of the Year award in 2012.

End of an era at Play Pitch Pre-School It it is with great sadness that, on July 20th, Carolyn Stutter, the manager of Play Pitch Pre-School at Baileys Court Activity Centre, will be leaving us.

Carolyn first opened the setting in 2003 and has built it up over

the years to a very high standard, receiving good Ofsted reports and maintaining a fantastic working relationship with all past and present staff, parents and children who have attended Play Pitch.

We all wish Carolyn the very best of luck for the future and would like to thank her so much for her dedication and hard work over the last 12 years.

No objection to proposed helibase With reference to the article in the June edition of the BSJ magazine concerning the proposed new helicopter base at Almondsbury (‘Councillors demand noise barrier if new helicopter base approved’), I live at Woodlands Park and have no objections whatsoever to the siting of the new base.

I see that 90 percent of the site will remain grass, which is a much better proposition than the field in Trench Lane that is covered by solar panels, which I find offensive.

I would be interested to know how the people who object to this proposed development would feel if they ever needed these emergency services.

Hand of friendship at Bluebell Gardens Maybe those who saw that popular film ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ will recall that compelling ditty… “Anything you can do I can do better!” That title rings clearly at ‘The Bluebells’ where opposing groups vie with each other in the ‘Get together stakes.’

Whether indoors in the flats’ communal lounge or outdoors in the small, yet altogether cosy garden area, there appears to be an insistence by some to go their separate ways.

This is somewhat regrettable

since much could be achieved by adopting a closer liaison. On the other hand, we must respect individual preferences. That no one can deter.

Adjacent to Bluebell Gardens lies Brook Court, a separately managed development. It is comforting to observe the interest taken by some of its residents who cast a glinting eye at our barbecues, which are often evident when the sun begins to shine. They acknowledge the pleasure we achieve in enjoying our burgers, sausages and the like, as they frequently pass by.

Some stop to chat through the railings, maybe wishing to join in with us to share with us the treats.

Drop in for a chat and possibly a ‘nibble’ as you leisurely pass our way! We adopt a donation strategy to help defray the costs.

We strive incessantly at ‘The Bluebells’ to shelve indifferences to achieve a closer liaison with each other – with varying degrees of success. In later life, this is essential. We endeavour to reach out to those with similar inspirations. Much has been done in this direction but, as yet, we have a long way to go.

Might Bradley Stoke be absorbed by Bristol?

Bristol could expand its city boundaries to absorb neighbouring areas including Filton and Kingswood [and, presumably, Bradley Stoke too], reported the Bristol Post on 18th June.

The paper said it “understands” that discussions are going on within government over whether the city has outgrown its existing boundaries.

C

ivil engineering company Skanska has announced that a section of Beacon Lane, which links Bradley Stoke with Winterbourne, is to close for around six weeks from the middle of July, to enable vital bridge repair works to be carried out on behalf of Highways England.

The work on the Winterbourne Lane underbridge, which carries the M4 motorway over the B4057/ Beacon Lane, consists of concrete repairs and waterproofing, which the firm says are essential to maintain the integrity of the structure and avoid more costly repairs in the future.

The work is scheduled to start on Monday 20th July and will last for approximately six weeks.

The firm says it has chosen to carry out the work during the summer holidays, as this will cause less disruption than doing it during term time. Additional work on the M4 will take place using narrow lanes in September, lasting for approximately four weeks, but this will not impact users of the B4057.

The work will address the root cause of a water leakage problem by removing the existing central reservation on the M4. A solid concrete slab will then be cast to prevent water flowing down to the underside of the bridge.

A company spokesperson said: “The type of work taking place means we need to close the road to through traffic for the entire duration of the scheme. The closure is to ensure the safety of both the public and our workforce.

However, access will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists.”

FREE Family Fun Day at popular local nursery

S

taff at Ambourne House Day Nursery are once again busy preparing for their forthcoming annual Family Fun Day. This popular free event, now in its sixth year, will be held on Saturday 25th July between 2pm and 5pm and everyone is welcome to attend.

Nursery manager Liz reports that last year’s Fun Day was a tremendous success, with more families than ever having a great time on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year! Children were able to have their faces painted, explore the bouncy castle and enjoy an amazing magical show. With ice lollies and cold drinks on hand to cool everyone down whilst enjoying the BBQ, it was a great opportunity for families at Ambourne House, and those thinking of sending their children there, to get together and enjoy the wonderful gardens that the

nursery is so lucky to have.

Liz says that people often cannot quite believe how large the gardens are at Ambourne House and how fortunate they are to have such a wonderful outdoor space, which has been enjoyed by many children over the last 24 years. The gardens though, have evolved over that time, with many wooden structures being added and natural resources being introduced to promote learning for children of all ages. These ongoing developments have enabled the nursery to support their philosophy that “children learn best when outdoors” and more recently the staff have been trialling Forest School sessions, which Liz feels have reinforced this belief.

Many of the staff at Ambourne House have been at the nursery for ten years or more (two of them for over 20!) “It is this type of loyalty and commitment that

provides the continuity that is so vital for children in their early years,” says Liz “We are engaging with parents more than ever now and always work very hard to include them in all aspects of the nursery, whilst trying to be as flexible as we can when meeting the different needs of all parents.”

“We now hold parent forums, regular mummies’ & daddies’ mornings and open evenings. We also email out weekly updates, so that, as a parent, you always know what your child is up to during their time with us! The plants in front of the wall now form an official flower bed, complete with edging, and most of the remaining bramble has been removed from the new lawn.

The existing ornamental cherries have also been supplemented with a selection of apple trees.

Unfortunately, tidying up the plants has made the sad state of the brick pillars more obvious, so we need a friendly builder to come and sort them out!

We tidied up and added another batch of flowering plants to the border by Manor Farm roundabout, just in time for the

Most of these have now gone on to refresh the planting in the Welcome to Bradley Stoke planters at the entrances to the town, as the previous wave of blooms had died down. Once the dahlias we have planted decide to make an appearance, it should again be a colourful corner.

The herb gardens, welcome planters and the Willow Brook planters have all had a tidy up and the latter will soon be given their summer foliage.

Several people approached us during our last work day to let us know that our efforts are being noticed and appreciated.

Thank you; it is good to hear from others that our efforts are worthwhile. And we especially appreciated Gavin who provided praise and cold drinks!!

T

he past month opened with a few drinks when, on the 1st, a large party gathered around the wide screen television in the lounge to watch one of our residents appearing on the BBC’s lunchtime show ‘Bargain Hunt’.

The viewing was preceded by a short but interesting talk on

the making of the programme and how the final showing was far from the filming experiences of the competitors. This, with auditions, was spread over three days.

Unfortunately, our resident failed to make any money but was able to keep the blue fleece!

All the regular weekly activities of whist, bingo, Tai Chi and coffee mornings have continued as usual, whilst the garden has now adopted its summer pose with the picnic tables and sun umbrellas all in situ.

In fact, it’s very much fingers crossed from now on with outdoor paella lunches and strawberry and cream teas for Wimbledon Week already in the planning stage, the catalyst being a departure towards the end of June from our normal monthly pub lunch to a garden orientated buffet lunch with drinks included.

Early July sees a new venture with a ‘Bring & Buy’ sale, giving residents the opportunity to either downsize or increase their worldly goods.

All profits are being donated to the Gardening Club to ensure the blaze of colour continues.

News Local ladies have hair chopped to help sick children get theirs back via wigs

wo kind-hearted local ladies have recently had their long locks lopped so they could donate hair to a charity that provides realhair wigs to children suffering from cancer and other serious illnesses.

The off-cuts, which need to be at least 17cm (7 inches) long in order to be useful for wigmaking, have been sent to the Little Princess Trust, a charity which supplies wigs to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment, or have conditions which lead to hair loss, such as alopecia.

Amy Yeates, who works as a sales assistant and designer at North Bristol Plumbing in Almondsbury, invited colleagues, suppliers and customers to place bids for the privilege of cutting her hair, with the top 12 bidders each winning the chance to cut off one tied-up length.

The money raised has also gone to the charity, where it will help purchase wigs made of special hair types that need to be bought-in for some of the beneficiaries.

Explaining her reasons for donating some of her hair, Amy said: “I appreciate how important it is for these children to maintain their self-esteem.

I’m just doing my bit – it’s not

costing me anything!”

Wendy Donaldson, a mum of two from Bradley Stoke and owner of The Bespoke Cakery, a local cake making business, is another lady who has recently donated hair to the Little Princess Trust.

“I was inspired by a friend who donated hair last year and I am also lucky to have thick hair – this has been passed down to my daughter too, who at three-anda-half has hair as long as mine!

I love the idea of the charity and they are always in need of hair donations. If they have to buy a wig, it costs them £350,” explained Wendy.

The Shine hair salon at Bradley Pavilions agreed to cut her hair and Wendy says their support has been amazing.

“They put up posters, had a collection box on their reception desk and informed their customers about the event.”

“They kindly cut my hair for free, as a donation to the event, and special thanks must go to Ellis, who did the deed and took her time over making my new style look fabulous and just what I wanted.”

An evening at Winterbourne Medieval Barn

T

his month, I was lucky enough to be able to attend something slightly different. The South Gloucestershire Community Spaces project recently held a launch event at the medieval barn in Winterbourne as part of Volunteer Week.

The project aims to provide support for volunteers who maintain and improve local community spaces. In the most part, this focuses on the green spaces that we are fortunate to have in the surrounding area, including those who look after our own Three Brooks nature reserve. The network aims to provide a range of free training courses for volunteers, as well as arranging social events.

As part of the launch of the project, South Gloucestershire Council created an online community called The Hive, where members are able to access help and communicate with other volunteer groups in the area.

The evening started with some time for the volunteers to network, followed by a series of presentations. The first presentations were given by Cllr Erica Williams (the new Chair of South Gloucestershire Council), Chris

Giles and John V Morris, who introduced the project. After a short break, the presentation was given over to the volunteers to discuss what they had achieved in their area. There was then an open forum where volunteers were given a minute each to speak about their groups.

I’ve never taken photographs at the medieval barn before, so didn’t know what to expect when I packed my camera bag.

Unfortunately, the builders didn’t take into account that photography would be invented, so didn’t think about the lighting!

Having struggled to produce some usable photographs, I’ve never been so happy to see a fellow photographer. He also covered the event and noticed I was struggling and very kindly took his flashgun off his camera and leant it to me so I could get some better shots! Never underestimate the power of the photography fraternity.

Overall, the evening was enjoyable and useful for all who attended, and hopefully the Community Spaces Project will provide much needed support for those volunteers who look after our green spaces.

Airbus Masterplan for the eastern part of the former Filton Airfield site. It is bounded by the A38 to the east, the railway line to the south and Hayes Way to the north.

lans to develop the former Filton Airfield site were approved at a meeting of South Gloucestershire Council’s Development Control (West) Committee on 4th June.

The development is a mix of residential development (with provision for up to 2,675 homes) and employment land, and it will also provide two primary schools and one secondary school, based around a central hub close to nurseries, health, sports and other community facilities.

It is a key component of the wider Cribbs/Patchway New Neighbourhood scheme, which foresees the construction of 5,700 new homes in an area stretching from Cribbs Causeway to Patchway by 2026, a figure which does not include the 2,400 homes currently being built on the Charlton Hayes site, north of the former airfield.

Prior to the planning meeting, the applicant, BAE Systems, had agreed to modify its plans to allow bus access via the

Combination Ground (North Way) junction and existing A38 underpass (previously proposed as just serving Airbus) and to provide a segregated, bus only, route through the site from the Combination Ground junction to the San Andreas roundabout near The Mall.

South Gloucestershire Council has already outlined plans for a so-called Cribbs Patchway Metrobus Extension scheme, which will link Parkway Station with The Mall, making use of the

dedicated route through the new development.

Access in and out of the development for general traffic in the eastern part of the site will be via a new traffic light controlled junction on the A38 (roughly in line with the end of the existing runway) and from two partcompleted roundabouts on Hayes Way, the new link road which runs from the A38 (near RollsRoyce) to The Mall. ● To view the full set of plans, visit http://bit.ly/bsj-mag-links

All abilities welcome at local triathlon club

By Ben Sweet of NBTC orth Bristol Triathlon club (NBTC) was formed in August 2014 to motivate and empower people of all fitness levels to compete in triathlons. Both novice and experienced triathletes and multi-sport athletes are welcome!

We currently have 60+ members from all over the Bristol and surrounding areas, at all experience levels from those training to complete their first ever triathlon or multisport event, all the way up to experienced Ironmen and GB level athletes.

We have a number of training sessions (both coached and social) throughout the week around the north Bristol and Yate areas.

These include swims (pool in

the winter and open water in the summer), bike rides of various distances and speeds, various distance runs, as well as strength and conditioning training.

NBTC has also hosted a number of successful novice multi-sport events as part of Triathlon England’s Go Tri initiative. Our next event will be a duathlon (run/bike/run) on 23rd August from Thornbury Rugby Club. This event is perfect for novice multi-sport and budding triathletes to try their hand at a friendly, low-key multisport event.

The magic of junior parkrun Popular weekly event in Little Stoke Park celebrates first anniversary

By Ian Shepherd unday used to be my one day of the week to have a lie-in, until just over a year ago, when I took on the role of Event Director of the brand new Little Stoke junior parkrun. As an enthusiastic runner and big fan of parkrun (the more established, free, weekly timed 5km run for all ages), I was very excited to be involved in the Bristol debut of the newer junior events for fourto fourteen-year-olds, which was ostensibly about getting children interested in running, but turned out to be so much more.

The process is simple enough: having signed up for free on the parkrun website and printed their personal barcode, runners turn up at Little Stoke Park shortly before 9am on Sunday, listen to the run briefing, take part in a short, fun warm-up routine, run a lap and a bit of the park, then

have their barcode and finish token scanned so that the results can be processed and published later. Colourful wristbands are awarded for completing 11, 21 and 50 events, representing the distances of half-marathon, marathon and ultra marathon.

A run, not a race

It’s what happens around all this that makes it magical. A buzz builds as families start to arrive, just as the volunteer team is making the finishing touches to the course. Friendships are renewed and new ones made; some have even come along just for this social side and don’t actually plan to run at all!

Runners have loads of fun either flying round as fast as they can to beat their best time, or just sauntering, picking daisies or playing as they go.

Parents are amazed and proud

week after week at how far their children can run, or how fast they complete the course, or how they go back to cheer on their friends as they approach the finish line.

Some parents run with their children, and are often surprised to find themselves enjoying running, so much so they might even take it up themselves. This is the magic of parkrun – a run, not a race, which is accessible (in all senses of the word) to all, regardless of ability.

When Little Stoke juniors started in June 2014, there were only fifteen other weekly junior parkrun events; one year later, there are fifty, located up and down the country, together providing free, timed runs for over 5,000 young runners every week. As impressive as this is already, it is all the more so when you consider it is run completely by volunteers.

Local volunteer team

Each week at Little Stoke juniors, one of our core volunteer team of seven DBS-checked Run Directors takes their turn looking after the event. They assemble a team of twenty from those who put themselves forward, to man the stopwatches and barcode scanners, hand out finish tokens, and ensure that every inch of the course can be seen by a marshal, making it safe for children as young as four to run on their own. Those who have tried volunteering find it immensely

rewarding, and end up coming back over and over again; after twenty five stints, a special volunteer t-shirt is awarded to wear with pride. Children, too, enjoy volunteering when they’re not running, and we welcome them to have a go.

Such a simple idea, yet so many far-reaching benefits to the individuals and the community. Having just had our first anniversary on 28th June, do you know what the surprising thing I’ve learned is? Lie-ins are overrated!

Police investigate sex assault in nature reserve

radley Stoke residents, shocked by the news that a young woman was subjected to a violent sexual assault while walking through the Three Brooks Local Nature Reserve late on Saturday 6th June, have been reminded that the town is generally “a safe place to live”. Extra police patrols have been carried out in the area over the last few weeks, in a further effort to reassure the community.

The incident happened at about 11.45pm when a 22-yearold woman, who was on her way home from a night out, was attacked in an area of the nature reserve described by police as being “between the underpass and Three Lakes, near to The Bluebells road”.

Later on Sunday 7th June, the search switched to the path leading down into the nature reserve from The Bluebells, where a team of eight police officers were seen searching undergrowth and woodland.

Three days after the incident, on Tuesday 9th June, police issued a description of the offender (see panel). This was followed on 12th June by the revelation that the victim had recognised the distinctive smell of a particular brand of aftershave on her attacker.

Police carried out extra patrols in the area in the days immediately following the incident. Signs appealing for information were put on lampposts, and officers carried out house-to-house calls and spoke to people who use the route.

Bradley Stoke Youth FC Festival of Football

W

orld Cup hero Sir Geoff Hurst and former Bristol Rovers & England star Gary Mabbutt teamed up with Bradley Stoke Youth FC (BSYFC) to celebrate a Festival of Football as part of the Bradley Stoke Community Festival on Saturday 6th June.

The event marked a decade of community football support

by McDonald’s that has helped thousands of youngsters enjoy the grassroots game.

Some 12 local schools took part in the festival, in which every team is a winner, under the watchful eyes of the football legends. Each school received prizes of sports equipment, thanks to McDonald’s, as part of its investment in grassroots football development.

The festival marked a landmark for McDonald’s franchisee Mike Guerin, who has supported Bradley Stoke Youth FC for over ten years, providing the club with £25,000 of new kit and equipment and supporting this year’s festival with a £7,000 donation. McDonald’s also helps to provide 14 local schools with free coaching for Year 1 pupils.

Bradley Stoke Youth FC is an FA Charter Standard Club and now boasts 350 players across 20 teams.

Sir Geoff Hurst, who is McDonald’s director of UK football, and Gary Mabbutt presented medals as well as posing for photographs and signing autographs for the aspiring young footballers.

Local McDonald’s franchisee Mike Guerin said: “Bradley Stoke Youth FC are a great community club and I have been involved with them for a decade now.

It is great to see clubs such as this one grow and develop into a key part of the local area.

Since McDonald’s first opened a restaurant in Bristol in 1985, we have committed to supporting communities in Bristol and the long term partnership with Bradley Stoke Youth FC is just one example of our continued commitment. Today has been another great day with an incredible community club and I’m sure all of the teams that have taken part have had a great day with a highlight being receiving their medals from Sir Geoff and Gary.”

McDonald’s director of football Sir Geoff Hurst, said: “It is thanks to the help of franchisees like Mike Guerin and local volunteers that clubs such as Bradley Stoke Youth FC and families in the area can enjoy the grassroots game. Festival Report Sole Sisters’ tenth anniversary Bradley Stoke 10k Run springs a surprise Last-minute diversion adds nearly 0.5km to course length

record field of 584 starters contested the tenth anniversary Bradley Stoke 10k Run, organised by Sole Sisters, on Sunday 7th June.

The tenth running of the race, however, turned out to be a little longer that the nine previous invocations, due to the need to make a last-minute change to the course in order to circumvent a police cordon that had been set up to protect an investigation scene in the Three Brooks Local Nature Reserve (see page 20).

Instead of passing underneath the Bradley Stoke Way bridge, runners were directed up into Diana Gardens and then through part of Snowberry Close before emerging at the pedestrian crossing on Bradley Stoke Way. After crossing the main road, they followed the path down to re-enter the nature reserve on the other side of the police cordon. The organisers managed to cancel out some of the extra distance by removing the loop around the perimeter of the finish field at the Jubilee Centre,

but runners carrying GPS devices reported that the race was still around 0.45km longer than the nominal 10km.

First home after completing the (extended) six-and-a-half mile course was Ciaran McQuade (Bristol and West AC) in a time of 37:18, followed by Soren Adams (Bristol and West AC, 37:41) and Nick Cutler (Running Forever RC, 38:20).

The first female to finish was Antonia Burt (Thames Hare and Hounds, 42:21), followed by Alice Doggrell (Bristol and West AC) 46:58 and Helen Tunnicliff (Portishead RC, 47:11).

The prize for the first Bradley Stoke resident to finish went to Martin Bartlett (38:32), who finished in fifth place.

Adam Wilson, another Bradley Stoke resident, who was featured in a recent Journal article following his call up to the Great Britain team at the Inas European Cross Country Championships, finished seventh (39:02). ● More at http://bit.ly/bs10k

Festival skate park competition a hit

F

ollowing the pro-rider demonstrations on the five-foot half pipe at the Jubilee Centre on Festival Saturday, the action moved to Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre on Sunday 7th June for the annual skate park competition.

The event was funded by South Gloucestershire Council’s Positive Activity Fund, the Willow Brook Centre and Bradley Stoke Town Council. In addition, some of the prizes and throw outs were donated by Crucial BMX and Krazy Scooters.

Festival Report Bed Race goes to Hilton for third year

A

small field of just five teams took part in the third running of the Festival Bed Race, centred on the Baileys Court Activity Centre, on Sunday 7th June.

Each team of five has to push their bed around a circuit that takes in of Baileys Court Road and Webbs Wood Road, completing a number of timed challenges at stations along the way.

The rules of the competition require one member of each team to be on the bed at all times, with the other four pushing.

The challenges were: drinks at Baileys Court Inn – a pint of beer (half for the ladies, and squash for the youth teams); apple bobbing – each team member taking an apple out of the water barrel without using their hands; cream cracker eating; and circus skills – whereby each team

member had to have a tennis ball in each hand and each team member then threw the balls to the next team member on their left to catch but this had to be done simultaneously without dropping any of the balls.

This year, the teams also had to complete an additional challenge, called ‘The Labyrinth’, at Baileys Court. This involved four team members having to navigate balls around lanes on a large flat board, by tilting it. The board also had holes in it and the team had to select the best route for the balls.

If a ball fell through a hole, it was moved back to the starting point.

The team from the Hilton Bristol Hotel once again came out on top, followed by Active Leisure and then the three youth teams – Explorer Scouts, Thursday night Scouts and the youth group from Christ the King Church.

Another busy month in the Three Brooks nature reserve

Swans and cygnets

By now we’re sure you all know that our mute swans Bradley & Brooke have, from their seven eggs, hatched three cygnets!

We’re rather chuffed with them – and with the ducklings, grebe and moorhen chicks that can be seen at the lake. We had made several temporary adjustments to the weirs at the lake to protect the young birds, unfortunately they and our new notice boards were vandalised, and on the morning of Saturday 23rd May local resident Steven Withers contacted us to say that the cygnets had been washed down the weir. Two of our group, Andy and Rob, dashed down to the lake

to help and, fortunately this year, the cygnets have survived.

Workdays

For our last two workdays we cleared streams and on our June workday we also welcomed two new members Sarah and Sophie, cleared a willow tree that often blocks the brook, cleared trees that were over hanging the path, pulled up Himalayan Balsam and Ceri impressed us with his lake fishing skills, quickly collecting several cones, a bin and one-anda-half bikes!

Walks

Our Dawn Chorus walk may have been very wet (although we were

warmed by the cooked breakfast that followed), but the rain held off just long enough for local reptile expert Amy Schwartz to lead our ever popular Reptile Walk.

Gill Smith reported: “We found slow worms under the mat by the tump entrance, then Amy pond dipped in the lower newt pond and within seconds had found a handsome adult male great crested newt! And some efts were found (palmate or smooth). Then we went to Bowsland Meadow pond where we found tiny fish and fry, raft spiders, pond skaters and damsel flies.”

Training & meetings

As well as our usual Committee Meetings, several members of the group attended an INNS surveys training day (Invasive Non Native Species) at Bristol Zoo, a volunteers’ day at the library, the launch of Community Spaces Network, the launch of the new

Pollinator Strategy for Greater Bristol and associated Get Bristol Buzzing Campaign and we were invited to a Green Gym Design Day in Birmingham. Although we weren’t able to attend the Green Gym day in person, our suggestions did make it onto the agenda!

Vandalism

Perhaps because of the longer evenings, we have in the last two months seen a sharp increase in unsociable behaviour and vandalism on the reserve. Several notice boards have been smashed beyond repair, areas of woodland have been trashed, picnic tables and bins damaged, drug bags and a carrier bag with a sharps box and syringes have been found, two sections of motorway fencing have been removed and the fire brigade have been called out at least six times. Although we can’t put a value on trees, so they are not included, we estimate the

Himalayan Balsam

We are appealing to our many dog walkers to help us with our battle with the invasive weed Himalayan Balsam which, if left unchecked, would cover much of the stream banks and beyond.

The balsam out-competes native species, monopolizes the bees as pollinators, blocks out light from the streams and in winter leaves the banks bare, causing erosion. So we are appealing to all our walkers to pull up at least 10 balsam plants each time you walk your dog on the reserve; if everyone did this you would be helping us, and the reserve, enormously.

Committee changes

The Chair and Secretary, Hannah Hough and Emma Creasey have both stepped down after almost ten years in post. They were both the founder members of the group and without them it wouldn’t have grown from the early days of two people on a workday with some borrowed tools to the well organised group it is today. They will both be sorely missed. The remaining committee are pleased to welcome Paul Smith (events), Andy Moon (tools) and Rob Gould.

We now have new contact emails (see table below) and, thanks to the generosity of Willow Brook Carphone Warehouse Manager, Scott Roberts, the group now has its own dedicated mobile phone.

Westcoast Properties opens North Bristol office

new name has begun appearing on estate agents’ boards across the north Bristol area following the opening of a new branch of Westcoast Properties, an independent and family-run agency with its roots in North Somerset.

Based in the former office of William Haig Patey at Patchway Roundabout, the new branch is headed up by Nicholas Webber, who has over 20 years experience in the industry, including eight years at Westcoast, and has now become a director of the Patchway branch.

Planning application submitted for new £260,000 skate park at leisure centre

B

radley Stoke Town Council has submitted a formal planning application for the construction of a new concrete skate park within the grounds of Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre.

The existing skate park will be demolished in advance of the construction of the new one.

This will yield eighteen car park spaces for the leisure centre, however, the construction of the new skate park will extend over part of the centre’s overspill car park, reducing its capacity by ten spaces, giving an overall net gain of eight spaces once the project is completed.

It is understood that construction of the new skate park will start at the end of the school summer holidays, subject to planning consent being obtained.

During the build phase, when there will be no access to skate park facilities, Circadian Trust, the operator of the leisure centre, has offered reduced charge sessions for young people who would normally use the skate park.

T

he Summer solstice has just passed and it is the perfect time to think about your health. As good weather (hopefully) approaches, it is a great opportunity to improve your physical and mental wellbeing.

Exercise is an important facet to getting healthy. It has multiple benefits and can reduce the risk of illness of stroke, diabetes and heart disease and cancer by an amazing 50%! It also has a significant effect on mental wellbeing and can help reduce stress and low mood.

You should try to keep active on a daily basis. 30 minutes per day five times a week, or 150 minutes over a course of a week, is the recommended amount to stay healthy. More is recommended if you need to lose weight. I would always advise to start slow and build

yourself up slowly. Maybe try walking or cycling to work instead of taking the car. For the technophiles out there, there are a multitude of ‘apps’ you can use to help get started, but I would recommend ‘NHS Couch to 5K plan’ (http://bit.ly/nhsc25k).

It is also important to note when out and exercising in the summer to keep well hydrated and wear plenty of sunblock.

This can help to reduce the risks of sun burn and heat exhaustion.

Diet also plays a crucial part in keeping healthy. Everyone knows about their ‘five per day’ but remember to look at your saturated fat and sugar intake in foods. Saturated fats are found in foods like cheese, butter and biscuits and can increase your risk of heart disease. Sugar is found in lots of popular summers treats like fizzy drinks and ice creams. take can raise your risk of diabetes.

With all this talk of diet and exercise, some may wish to get an “MOT”. This may prove a good motivator of change for the better and help identify problems early. Various GP surgeries, including our own Bradley Stoke surgery, run a free NHS health check service.

An NHS health check is available for those aged from 40 to 74 years old and aims to assess your risk of developing health problems and ways to prevent them.

Schools Year 6 pupils encouraged to try pedal power to get to local secondary schools

P

upils from Baileys Court Primary School took part in bike rides to Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS) and Abbeywood Community School on Monday 15th June to help them learn the cycle routes ahead of the transition to secondary education in September.

Transition rides aim to build confidence and improve riding skills so pupils can travel independently to school. The rides are for pupils who have achieved their Bikeability cycle proficiency level 2 and are led by accredited Bikeability instructors.

As part of the ride, the pupils are shown where to secure their bike and safety gear at the new school, so there are no big surprises on the first day of term.

In total, 65 pupils from seven South Gloucestershire junior or primary schools including

Baileys Court, Bowsland Green, Meadowbrook, Raysfield, St Michael’s, Stoke Lodge and The Ridge will be taking part in transition rides to their new secondary school.

Martina Byrne-Obee, road safety officer at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “These transition rides are aimed at encouraging students to think about how they can travel to their new school as well as showing them some of the benefits of cycling. The council’s Bikeability accredited instructors try out a couple of different routes to and from school with the students to help boost their skills ready for when the time comes to make that all important journey to their new secondary school.”

Transition rides have been funded by the Local Sustainable Transport Fund Active Travel to School project.

‘Summer feet’

A

t last, a promise of sunshine! We can pack away our winter boots and thick warm socks! We can think about our summer holidays! Beach, sun and sandals! Sandals – with these feet! No way!

They carry us more than 150,000 miles in a lifetime, but we rarely give our poor, hardworn feet any thought. That’s until the sun starts shining and we ditch our coats and dig out our summer footwear.

So after 6 months of scrunching them into winter boots, sweating them out in trainers and squeezing them into high heels; it’s time to repay our feet with a little TLC. A seasonal makeover is an excellent way to introduce a more regular regime for looking after our feet. Think quarterly MOT for feet!

From aches and pains to smells and fungal problems – or even corns, blisters and more serious infections – foot problems are no laughing matter.

Sometimes, these foot conditions can also lead to further health difficulties, even affecting the hips, knees and back.

As ever, prevention is key.

Regular maintenance will help prevent problems and keep your feet looking good. It’s the simple things - like careful foot hygiene, exercise, good footwear and inspecting our feet that will be effective. If you do find any cuts, discolouration

and cracks between your toes, then early discovery makes them easier to treat.

Once you have had a summer foot makeover, keep up the maintenance and your feet will have you dancing through the seasonal changes.

Just as winter threatens hazards such as sweaty feet and confinement, summer offers its own complications for our feet.

In the warmer weather, our feet swell, so make sure there is plenty of room and adjust your shoes if necessary.

Wearing sandals or flip-flops can often create ridges of hard skin or callus around the heels.

Use a good moisturiser and buff with a pumice stone if necessary.

Flip-flops are not designed for prolonged use. They offer no support - ideal for around the pool or on the beach, but not great for a day out shopping.

he Journal is pleased to announce that Natasha Thwaites is the lucky winner of our exclusive prize draw to win a year’s free membership at the Anytime Fitness gym in Bradley Stoke.

The free prize draw was featured in the May 2015 edition of the Bradley Stoke Journal magazine and on our website and the winner’s name was drawn out of the hat by a third-party independent of Anytime Fitness and The Journal.

Natasha, a mum of three who lives in Bradley Stoke, said she was surprised but delighted to win the prize.

Having been a member of another local gym until a couple of years ago, she decided to cancel her membership and buy fitness equipment to use at home instead. However, the plan didn’t really work out, because

she found that there were too many distractions at home.

“The momentum just wasn’t there. At home, it’s too easy to stop the workout after just a few minutes,” she said.

She had recently been talking about joining a gym again and says the 24-hour opening at Anytime Fitness is ideal for her lifestyle, as her husband works shifts and she is “a bit of a night owl” herself.

Aiming to keep fit for “general wellbeing”, Natasha plans to use the gym around three times a week, either late at night with her husband, or during the day, when their children are at school.

Dunkley’s are leaders of the flock

New venue for local Small Business Forum

his summer, Dunkley’s Chartered Accountants, who are based in Bradley Stoke, are one of the lead sponsors of the exciting and ewe-nique Bristol ‘Shaun in the City’ trail.

The eagerly-anticipated charity sculpture trail will feature 70 individually-designed sculptures of Aardman’s Shaun the Sheep.

The sculptures will be installed in iconic locations and green spaces all across Bristol from 6th July until 31st August, including Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol Temple Meads Station, Ashton Gate Stadium, the Botanic Garden and Horfield Common, before being auctioned to raise funds for Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity.

The sculptures are due to arrive on Monday 6th July and Dunkley’s Shaun can be found at the baa-rilliant Botanic Garden

The Bradley Stoke Small Business Forum meets on the second Monday of each month at the Kipling Suite, Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre, between 6.30pm and 8.30pm. Although it’s an obvious opportunity to network, the purpose of the forum is also to allow local business to converse with each other, discuss potential business opportunities and provide assistance in developing their business.

The forum allows local small business owners to discuss recurrent themes that affect them, such as marketing, obtaining new clients, finding and keeping good staff members, managing cash flow etc.

Town to stage its first ‘community triathlon’ on Sunday 30th August Bradley Stoke Way to be closed to traffic between 6am and 2pm for cycling stage

S

wimmers, runners and cyclists are being invited to take part in the first community-based triathlon event to be staged in Bradley Stoke.

The Active Triathlon is taking place on Sunday 30th August 2015 and is expected to attract participants from all over South Gloucestershire.

Held in partnership with South Gloucestershire Council and Triathlon England, the Sprint Triathlon event will cater for all abilities who want to be part of this fast growing sport.

It consists of a 400 metre pool swim at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre, 18km cycle and 5km run. The cycle ride will be held on closed roads along Bradley Stoke Way to ensure the event is

safe as well as fun, while the run will mainly be along paths in the Three Brooks Nature Reserve.

The Triathlon is being organised by Active Leisure Centres and is the idea of triathlete Akhil Viz, who has been living and training in Bradley Stoke since October 2011. Akhil has competed in Sprint distance triathlon, Olympic distance triathlon, Ironmans and has represented Great Britain and Gibraltar at the European and World Long Distance Triathlon Championships.

He said: “Triathlon is an increasingly popular sport and the sprint distance makes it really accessible to anyone who wants to increase their fitness or improve in a new discipline. We are really

pleased at the response we’ve had so far and are expecting it to be a ‘sellout’ event.”

To help people get in shape for the challenge, Active Leisure is holding special training sessions at its leisure centres in the run up to the event.

The Triathlon is one of the highlights of Active Leisure’s tenth anniversary celebrations this year. It is being organised purely on a voluntary basis and any profits earned as a result will be reinvested into future events and other sport development projects within the community.

The first wave of places has been taken up by existing Active Total

members and the second wave is now open to other members of the public. There are 150 places in total open to over 18s.

There will be prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place male and female finishers and a free bike fit by Bike Science Bristol for the competitor with the fastest bike split.

Road closure information In order to stage the event, Bradley Stoke Way will have a road closure in place between 6am and 2pm on Sunday 30th August.

Bradley Stoke Rainbows mark 25th birthday

he 1st Bradley Stoke Rainbows have marked their 25th birthday with a series of special events.

As part of the celebrations, the Rainbows worked towards the Octopus Challenge badge, which covers the eight points of the original Rainbow programme.

Connie: “We have been doing lots of fun things to celebrate Rainbows’ 25th birthday, like making a birthday banner and octopus cupcakes.”

On Saturday 6th June, 16 Rainbows and three Brownies spent the day at Old Down Country Park. They enjoyed a fun-filled day exploring the grounds, playing in the adventure park and meeting the animals.

Some of the Rainbows learnt about the vegetables and fruits that are grown in the walled garden. The newest Rainbows, Freya, Bella, Penny and Abi all made their Rainbow Promise outside the yurt.

Paige: “I jumped as high as the sky on the bouncing pillow” The fun continued at Old Down Scout hut with crafts and games followed by a barbecue and campfire. Everyone then got ready for bed before story time.

On Sunday morning everyone had breakfast outside and played with the parachute. Just before everyone went home, each of the girls was awarded a special badge to show that they had spent the night away from home.

Penny: “Rainbows was 25 and I made a birthday card and got to blow out the candles on our cake as I’m the youngest!”

The Rainbows also planned and hosted a party. Current and former Rainbows and leaders enjoyed party games, party food and a wonderful cake made by former Brownie leader, Liz.

A

few weeks ago I was with my brother in a supermarket. As we were walking down an aisle, my brother’s concentration centred on a discount bin full of rugs. He walked up to it and proceeded to pull one out. His vision was transfixed and without hesitation, he decided to unroll his selected rug across the aisle.

This was to the detriment of the small trolley queue building up!

Welcome to the latest article in an occasional series in which we invite our readers to share their passion for a hobby or interest.

blue shone out! The colours lit the aisle bouncing off the drab but highly polished supermarket floor. My brother turned to me and said with a big smile “I’m buying this!” But what was he buying?

Well these intense colours attributed to a shower rug in the shape of ‘Bob’ – A Minion. This Minion can only be described as a little yellow twinky dressed in dungarees. These universally recognised characters have had successful commercial appeal worldwide. If you have not watched the Despicable Me films, you will still have noticed their merchandise everywhere. They appeal to all ages including my brother who is 34 by the way! Tut tut! So if I say Minions and you think of a small cellophane tube filled with brightly coloured sweets, then you would be completely mistaken!

It took little effort to convince

myself to go and see this film, so here’s my review of Minions (rated U).

Spawned through evolution, the minions travelled through history to look for a leader. A tyrannosaurus and Napoleon are only but a few of their failed attempts at wooing an evil boss, who can accommodate the little yellow henchmen into their plan! Success it seems is only around the corner when they discover a femme fatale by way of Scarlet Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock). She teams up with them, but her intentions are far from true as they get mixed up in a plot, a plot that sets them at perilous odds with the super villain.

Geoffrey Rush’s voice as narrator in this spin off film is a great touch. Minions Stuart, Kevin and Bob act as close family as they argue and work together. This is especially evident when they arrive in New

York. They are truly universal character and if you listen closely, you can hear the full spectrum of languages cycling through in dialogue.

During the second part of the film, there is very much a British theme with a swinging 60’s London back drop and happy upbeat music from the Beatles, the Monkeys and other groups that defined the era.

It was a great film, but for me the Minions are lost without ‘Gru’ (the evil mastermind in the previous films); it’s hard to explain and all I would say is watch the end credits and all will be revealed. These were the absolute highlight in my opinion.

A very enjoyable film suitable for all ages. I would give Minions three Bananas out of five!
