Council’s ultimatum to reluctant kebab trader
A
kebab van operator who rents a pitch in the car park of Brook Way Activity Centre has returned to trade at the site after an absence of seven months. Ozzy’s Kebabs has been trading again at the site, on Friday and Saturday nights only, since the beginning of April, after Bradley Stoke Town Council issued an ultimatum that threatened immediate termination of contract if the van didn’t reappear by 4th April 2015. The van had previously been trading seven nights a week, but is understood to have stopped attending in early September 2014. In October 2014, Ozay Isitman, the owner of the business, told the council that it was running at a loss and he was finding it very difficult to continue trading. He asked the council to modify his contract so that he would only

have use of the pitch on Fridays and Saturdays, which was agreed. By February this year, the van had still not reappeared, although the council appeared to be unconcerned because the trader was “still paying rent for the pitch”. However, at a council meeting just one month later, councillors were told that Mr Isitman was now in breach of the terms and conditions of hire because of “late payments and non-attendance”. When allowed to address the
meeting, Mr Isitman said he was in the process of acquiring a smaller van and would hopefully be back trading the following weekend. Following a length debate, held in closed session, councillors decided to issue an ultimatum to Mr Isitman, requiring him to recommence trading by 4th April or lose the pitch. Having returned just in time to satisfy the council’s demand, Mr Isitman now faces having to renew his annual South

Gloucestershire street trading licence, for which he requires a letter from the town council (as landlord) stating that they are happy for him to trade at the site. Members of the town council’s Planning Committee meeting in April expressed reluctance to specifically name Mr Isitman in their letter to the licensing authority, deciding instead to state that “a trader” was allowed to use the pitch. The town council’s Finance Committee agreed in October 2013 that up to two food traders should be allowed on each of its three sites, saying that this would be “beneficial for the area, offering residents a wider choice of multi-cultural takeaway food facilities within the town, at the same time as offering an extra income stream for the council”. Trader occupancy across the three sites is currently less than 10% of that aspired level.

First services held in new church and community centre New 350-seat auditorium at St Michael’s, Stoke Gifford
H
undreds of people attended the first services to be held in the new St Michael’s Church and Community Centre at Stoke Gifford on Sunday 26th April. Members of the congregation were able to use the centre, built on derelict land in North Road, for the first time for the annual Church Weekend and 10.30am and 6.30pm Sunday services. For more than a decade, the 10.30am family service has had to be held in two separate locations – the 14th century church and the former village school, known as the Old School Rooms – as the church is no longer large enough to
accommodate the growing membership. The new building is a key element of the St Michael’s Heart of the Community project which also includes the refurbishment of the Old School Rooms, which are used for church and community activities, as well as the restoration and upgrading of the old church. The church, which has a Norman font and was mentioned in the Domesday Book is a familiar sight to passengers passing through Parkway Station. The auditorium at the new centre is capable of seating 350 and facilities include room for a shop, a large
reception area, church office, conference areas for schools and businesses, meeting rooms and accommodation for wedding receptions, birthdays and other celebrations. Further meeting and community rooms will be provided during the final phase of building, including a large kitchen and an extra 220 seats in a balcony overlooking the auditorium. The Reverend Simon Jones, Rector of St Michael’s, said: “We bought the land 10 years ago, and after eight years of planning, four years of preparing and two years of building, the new St Michael’s Centre in Stoke Gifford is now open. It has been a long journey, but I am delighted that the new
centre is now being used.” “With more than 3,000 homes due to be built in the parish over the next decade, there will be a pressing need for local amenities. Judo black belt for Eleanor, 15

radley Stoke Judo Club has grown significantly over the past couple of years and is proud to boast members who attend from as far as field as Wales, Swindon, Bath, Weston, Cirencester and Cheddar. However, nothing pleases the club coaches more than when locally based members achieve success and reach new levels of excellence. The latest club member to achieve this is 15-year-old Bradley Stoke resident Eleanor Young who obtained her 1st Dan black belt at a recent national competitive grading in High Wycombe. In Judo you are only able to obtain your black belt once you reach 15 years of age and it is one of the few martial arts where you have to competitively fight to achieve the required level. On the day, Eleanor was one of the youngest girls with many of the other competitors being

in their 20s and 30s, so she had a tough task ahead of her. At a competitive grading, a fighter needs to successfully complete a two stage trial before they can claim their black belt.

In the first stage, Eleanor was required to beat two opponents by the maximum ippon score to qualify for the 2nd stage 3 fight line up. In the 2nd stage she was required to fight three competitors in quick succession with no rest and defeat them all by the maximum ippon score. Any failure to obtain a win by ippon would have meant instant elimination, but thankfully Eleanor’s skill meant she achieved a fantastic result. Eleanor started her Judo career at the age of 9 at Baileys Court Primary as part of the club’s school programme. From there she moved up to main club and has gone from strength to strength, winning many medals at home and abroad. She is currently a member of the England Under-18 Squad and will be competing at the European Cadet Cup in Berlin at the start of May.

uilding work on the new primary phase building at Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS), which is due to open with an intake of 30 Reception children in September, remains on target for completion by the end of June, according to a spokesperson for the school. The internal and external structures have been completed and decisions are now being made with regard to flooring, electrical and data points, wifi points and furniture. Parents have now received their offer letters from the local authority and all 30 places in Reception have been filled (see application statistics, right). Parents of the children who have been allocated places are being sent a fortnightly newsletter to keep them abreast
of developments. Following the appointment of a primary phase headteacher last year, the school has recently announced the appointment of Geraldine Rogers as Reception teacher.

Writing in the school newsletter, Miss Rogers said: “I am extremely excited to start
working at BSCS’s primary phase in September. Having been to see the building and to visit our new classroom, I felt really inspired and enthusiastic to start creating the new indoor and outdoor areas. Letters and Opinions Bluebell Gardens: Bring on the sunshine! When the residents in the flats at Bluebell Gardens moved from their previous habitat at Filton’s Newleaze House – now demolished – they missed most of all their extensive garden. In the current location, they have to be satisfied with a relatively small patch overlooking the car park and the Tesco Extra delivery yard. Not to be deterred, willing hands and a lavish burst of spring sunshine brought out the barbecue equipment to give them their first taste of things to come. Hamburgers and chicken wings tempted the appetite, amply accompanied by refreshing drinks. Piercing cold gusts of wind gave no respite and occasionally completely cleared the tables. It was all part of a welcome togetherness that is beginning to emerge after a period of relative

Candidates announced for town elections
C
andidates for the Bradley Stoke Town Council elections, which take place on the same day as the general election (Thursday 7th May), have been officially announced. The Conservatives, who won all 15 seats on the town council at the last election in 2011, put up the highest number of candidates (15), followed by UKIP (8) and Labour (6). The Liberal Democrats, who controlled the council prior to the 2007 elections, do not field any candidates at all this time round. The Conservatives have already picked up one seat by default, in Stoke Brook ward, where Keith Cranney stands unopposed. They are mathematically certain to win a further two seats, one in Baileys Court and the other in Primrose Bridge, because the other parties combined do not field sufficient candidates to win all the seats available in those wards.

Since the 2011 elections, three councillors elected as Conservatives have defected to UKIP: Ben Walker, Ed Rose (both Woodlands ward) and Kim Harris (Meadowbank ward).

are also not standing again: Robert Jones in Baileys Court ward and Sarah Pomfret in Primrose Bridge ward. Having defeated UKIP in all three by-elections held over the current session, the Conservatives will no doubt be hopeful of winning all 15 seats for the second time in four years. In the new parish of Stoke Lodge and The Common, which recently split from Patchway, the nine seats on the council are being contested by nine Conservative candidates, six from UKIP and one independent. All of the UKIP candidates (and one Conservative) are also contesting seats on Bradley Stoke Town Council. n Thursday 9th April, in the school holidays, the fire brigade came to Wise Owls. We saw a real fire engine and met some of the crew. They had a lot of equipment such as axes, helmets, breathing suits and hammers which they have to use in an emergency. Wise Owls children were keen to find out more and asked lots of interesting questions such as:
“What do the fire brigade have to wear in a fire?” They showed us their gas protection suits which were really heavy! We had a great time with some of their equipment. “It was awesome when we got to use the hoses,” reported staff member James Collins. Candidates for the parliamentary seat of Filton and Bradley Stoke attended an Election Forum at Bradley Stoke Community School on Sunday 12th April. Around 300 members of the public heard the aspiring MPs’ views on a number of topics that included: poverty and benefits, EU membership, health tourism, affordable housing policy, young people, faith schools, privatisation of the NHS, abortion law, services at Frenchay Hospital and student tuition fees. The event was hosted by Bridge Community Church and supported by local churches Christ the King in Bradley Stoke and St Chad’s in Patchway. ‘BS in Bloom’ team brings colour to town By Sara Messenger of Bradley Stoke in Bloom (BSiB) s I sit writing this with the sun blazing through the window, it’s hard to believe that our March workday was rained off. The plan had been to put together our new rotavator and turn over the library meadow, to give the seeds the best chance, but the weather was just too wet, so instead we collected over seven bags of litter on our way to look at Snowberry Close where it’s been suggested that we could make a pond. We love the idea of a pond, with possibly another insect hotel, some seating and some wild flowers. This month it appears that we have too little rain as our new plants are very dry and the primroses that we added to Primrose Bridge don’t seem to have fared so well. But the daffodils we have dotted around

the town are now in full flower and it was great to meet a couple of fellow guerrilla gardeners, who having had the same idea had already added their daffodils to a dull corner. Our April workday saw us two men down and one injured! But we still managed to replant the Community Herb Garden outside
the Brook Way Activity Centre, plant some wildflower seeds and daisies on The Common East, do some shopping, dig up bramble at the Palmers Corner and add a magnolia tree and some more flowers to the roundabout. Thank you to Adam and Gary from Ambience Landscapes Ltd who, as promised, were very careful when mowing around the plants. Roundabouts are one of the most often asked for improvements, as especially for new residents and visitors, it can be hard to navigate around the town when all the roundabouts look the same. We are very keen too and as soon as we can get the go ahead, have plans for most of the towns roundabouts, including giant carrots for Rabbit Roundabout! glorious and the smell of the hyacinths wafting across the square reminds us that spring has definitely sprung! Thank you to Almondsbury Garden Centre who have donated all the plants for the town centre. Almondsbury Youth U13s and Bradley Stoke United U13s used their competitive league fixture on Sunday 12th April to promote the Hope for Morgan charity, in aid of Bradley Stoke schoolboy Morgan Walker. A bucket collection during the match and post-match fundraising raised a total of £200.60 to towards this fabulous cause to help improve the quality of Morgan’s life. The match was played with excellent spirit and with a high skill level and the winner on the day was… well, that was Morgan of course! Trench Lane Boot Sale restarts this weekend A popular weekly car boot sale that takes place near Bradley Stoke is due to re-open for the 2015 season this weekend. The Trench Lane Boot Sale, held on Sundays on a farmland site opposite the entrance to Woodlands Golf Club, will open for the first time this year on Sunday 3rd May. The final boot sale in 2015 will be on Sunday 27th September.

ollowing hot on the heels of last month’s mass Beaver investiture, members of the 1st Bradley Stoke Scout Group’s new Cub pack at Holy Trinity School were invested on Monday 20th April. This time seventeen Cubs and five leaders came together with their families to say their promise to become members of the world-wide Scouting Movement.
Assistant Group Scout Leader (Cubs) Dave Pace orchestrated the events and made sure that everyone had a memorable time. The popularity of Scouting in Bradley Stoke has meant that the group has grown now to four Beaver colonies, three Cub packs, two Scout troops and a partnered Explorer Scout On Twitter? Riverside Leisure Club has joined with Bradley Stoke Lions to help recycle used spectacles by placing a collecting bin in their lounge area. The spectacles collected will be used to support those with impaired vision in communities across Africa, India and eastern Europe. Last year alone, UK Lions Clubs collected over 300,000 pairs and the Lions’ challenge is to mark 100 years of community service by recycling 100 million pairs of spectacles worldwide.

South Glos elections: UKIP’s Ben Walker battles to hold Bradley Stoke North seat
Radio station invites all to Eurovision party
C
andidates for the South Gloucestershire district elections, which take place on the same day as the general election (Thursday 7th May), have been officially announced. Perhaps the most intriguing contest in the local wards will be in Bradley Stoke North (one seat), where the incumbent, Ben Walker, elected in 2011 on a Conservative ticket, defends his seat after an acrimonious defection to UKIP in May 2012. Despite Cllr Walker’s relatively high public profile, gained through two terms as Bradley Stoke mayor and his current candidacy for the Filton and Bradley Stoke parliamentary seat, the Conservatives will be hoping that their candidate, Paul Hardwick (a Bradley Stoke town councillor since September 2012), can return the seat to the blue fold. The other candidates are Dawn Clode (Liberal Democrat) and Philip Edwards (Labour). Eight candidates contest the Bradley Stoke Central and Stoke Lodge ward (two seats), where incumbents Brian Hopkinson (Conservative) and Sarah Pomfret (Conservative) both stand for reelection. Independent candidate Rebecca Strong, who contested this ward in 2011, also stands again. Former district councillor Jon Williams (Liberal Democrat), defeated in 2011 by Ben Walker in Bradley Stoke North, is a surprise contender. The other four candidates are Anne Addison
(Labour), Stephen Barr (UKIP), Sarah Drake (Liberal Democrat) and Natasha Thwaites (UKIP). Residents in Bradley Stoke South (two seats) will have at least one new councillor on 8th May, as one of the incumbents, Rob Jones (Conservative), is not standing for re-election, having moved to North Somerset during his term in office. John Ashe, the other Conservative incumbent, stands again, along with party colleague Roger Avenin (a Bradley Stoke town councillor since May 2007). They are opposed by six other candidates: Davis Addison (Labour), Anthony Blake (Labour), Tom Crawley (UKIP), Derrick Powell (UKIP), Andrew White (Liberal Democrat) and Christine Willmore (Liberal Democrat). Some parts of the south of Bradley Stoke actually lie in the Stoke Gifford district ward (three seats), where two of the incumbents, Brian Allinson (Conservative) and Keith Cranney (Conservative), stand for re-election. Here, the Green Party puts up its only candidate across the four local wards, Richard Burton. The other candidates are Ernie Brown (Conservative), Benjamin Campbell (Liberal Democrat), Andrew Chubb (Labour), Louis Crawley (UKIP), Ginge Dangerfield (UKIP), Dayley Lawrence (Labour), Ben Scott (Labour), Laurence Walker (Liberal Democrat) and Becky Williams (Liberal Democrat).

Doors will open at 7pm and the event starts at 7.30pm. Bowsland Green Primary School Onesie Day
Bowsland Green Primary School took part in a Pyjama/Onesie day on Wednesday 15th April, raising money for Autism Awareness and the British Heart Foundation. Two pupils of the school, Grace and Emily Bishop (pictured left), organised the fund raising event. In addition to the teachers and children enjoying the school day in their PJs
and onesies, there was a cake and loom band sale after school. Onesie day was a great success. The cakes sold quickly too! have been visiting communities over the last few weeks and finding out more about what people are saying currently. One thing is that we don’t seem to understand coalition government. Entering a coalition was necessary because of the tough financial position and the seats. Coalition means neither party get to do all they originally intended. Perceptions of the LibDems shifted with the negotiated outcomes, but we are still the same party of values for a fairer society with opportunity for all. We may desire clarity and prior expectations, but this is not how coalition government works. It reflects the way the world is changing - we need to get on board and engage with a new collaborative politics. The old ways of left and right ping pong are over. A second common view is that more people

are not sure who to vote for than at previous elections. There is an interest in a wider range of opinion and ideas, and this is healthy. But we often seem to hear one thing one day and the opposite the next whether from businesses, science or politicians. We need an
honest interpretation of the facts, but we must take some responsibility for this ourselves rather than leaving it to partisan groups. I stand for a strong economy, fairer taxes on those who can afford it, more funding for an efficient, non-privatised NHS and care system, for environmental protection and localism. Watch out for hustings, follow the debates and look at the www.fabslibdems.org website for more information on our thoughts, including local housing and transport issues. Have a say, listen to ideas and engage in debate during the election. Changing politics and our society for the better needs new perspectives and solutions, so join in for these few weeks. I
have always enjoyed elections; typically I spend most of the day and evening knocking on doors and talking to people. We’ve received a very positive response on the doorstep and I always enjoy meeting people. Most people do seem to appreciate that this Government has had to make some very tough decisions but the economy has been turned around. Local residents are interested and excited about the prospect of the regeneration of the Filton Airfield site with the prospect of thousands of new jobs and much needed homes. I have reassured people that the transport infrastructure improvements and investment are taking place with the funding confirmed for the MetroBus, a new railway station at Filton North and the Stoke Gifford By-Pass.

There is still a great deal of anger about the last Labour Government’s decision to downgrade Frenchay Hospital, but I will continue to work for the provision of
the proposed community hospital. South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group has received a 7% increase for their 2015/16 budget. A Conservative Government will increase health spending by £8bn and, as I always say, to support great public services you have to have a successful economy. Europe and concern about the European Union is also a topic frequently raised. My response is that only a Conservative Government can deliver a renegotiation of our membership and finally give the British people a say on whether we wish to remain part of the European Union. radley Stoke Pharmacy, located on Brook Way, alongside Bradley Stoke Surgery, is to reduce its opening hours from Wednesday 6th May 2015, when it merges with the nearby Ferndene Pharmacy (formerly Jhoots Pharmacy and, before that, Lloyds Pharmacy). Ferndene Pharmacy will cease trading after the close of business on Tuesday 5th May 2015. The changes come seven months after Bradley Stoke Pharmacy bought Ferndene Pharmacy from Jhoots, with a view to merging the two businesses, subject to approval from NHS England, which has now been granted. Richard Slade, joint owner of Bradley Stoke Pharmacy said: “Ferndene Pharmacy has lost a significant amount of business to Bradley Stoke Pharmacy. The amount of work and the number of customers at Ferndene Pharmacy have dropped significantly, which made it financially unviable. The best option was to merge both the branches and provide all possible services from one pharmacy.” Commenting on the reduction in opening hours, Mr Slade added: “There is another 100hour pharmacy in Bradley Stoke and we found that we were only seeing a few customers late at night and at weekends, which, again, didn’t make it financially

local footballer who died in hospital three days after a freak accident during a game at the Trust Ground in Stoke Gifford was given a colourful send off by hundreds of friends and wellwishers at his funeral last month. Ben Hiscox, 30, was playing for Stoke Gifford United FC in a match against Mangotsfield Sports on Saturday 28th March when he slid off the pitch following a challenge and struck his head against the wall of the team’s clubhouse. The striker was knocked unconscious for a few minutes and was taken by ambulance to Southmead Hospital, where he was found to have suffered two fractures on the back of his skull and bruising on the brain. Despite making good progress, resulting in him being moved out of intensive care the following Monday, he suffered two seizures in the early hours of Tuesday and tragically died. He had lived in Bradley Stoke since he was three years old, and started playing football when he was just six. He began playing for Stoke Gifford United aged 16, and went on to play for Bristol Manor Farm for a number of years, but went back to playing for Stoke Gifford United to be with his friends. Ben, who worked for a lifting company in Avonmouth, had a long-term partner, Zoe Mathews, and a seven-yearold stepdaughter, Aaliyah. His parents, Gloria and Clive Hiscox, also live in Bradley Stoke. He also leaves behind a sister, Rachel, and a nephew, Sebastian. Mum Gloria told the Bristol Post: “No one ever had a bad word to say about him. He would do anything for anybody. He was an amazing stepfather and he had a brilliant relationship with his stepdaughter and partner.” Scores of floral and written

tributes to Ben were placed against the wall of the clubhouse in Stoke Gifford where the accident happened. Ben was an avid Bristol Rovers fan and the club staged a minute’s applause in his memory before the start of their Good Friday game against Chester. Ben’s parents requested that everyone attending Ben’s funeral on 15th April wear blue and white, or a Bristol Rovers football strip, and even the officiating vicar wore a Rovers’ scarf! Hundreds attended the event, held at Westerleigh Crematorium on a beautifully sunny day – with many having to listen to the service from outside because they couldn’t all fit into the chapel. The final song to be played at the funeral, at the request of Ben’s parents, was ‘Goodnight Irene’, the adopted club song of Bristol Rovers. Following the service, everyone was invited to join the family at The Beaufort Arms in Stoke Gifford, where hundreds of well-wishers spilled out onto the pavement along North Road. Later in the evening, a firework display was held in tribute to Ben at the Trust Ground.

Children accidentally locked in car rescued by church members
T
wo members of a local church have been praised for their role in rescuing a pair of young children who had been accidentally locked inside a car and were becoming distressed. The incident happened at Christ the King Church in Mautravers Close, Bradley Stoke, where the children had been brought to attend a Music with Mummy class on Wednesday 15th April. The mother of the children, one of whom was a premature baby using an oxygen tank, shut the doors while her keys were inside the car, without realising that the older child had flicked on the central locking mechanism. There were no windows open, so two members of the church, Aaron Stone and Mark James,
flew into action, making attempts to get into the car as, in the strong midday sun, the children were seen to be sweating and starting to become distressed. Whilst the rescue was in progress, other church members comforted the distressed mother and attempted to shield the children from the sun by holding articles of clothing over the car’s windows. The fire brigade were called and responded promptly, but as they pulled into the car park, Aaron and Mark managed to get the lock to open using a bucket handle, some blue tac, a screwdriver and some plastic package wrap (all the tools they had to hand) and were able to get the children out of the vehicle.

Aaron’s wife Jessica, who helped during the rescue, commented: “The children were in there for no more than 20 minutes, but both were already covered in sweat and distressed by the time we got them out.” “Central locking is a fabulous thing, but I think this incident
could be a good reminder to owners of older cars that operate in this way to be aware of where your keys are when moving children in and out of the vehicle.” “With summer approaching, it is also a timely reminder not to leave children or pets unattended in cars.”

Bradley Stoke Youth Rugby Minis Festival
his month I did something a little different. I normally steer clear of sports in general, be that photographing, playing or watching. However, I have made an exception. A few weeks ago I went with BSR to the Bradley Stoke Youth Rugby Minis Festival. If, like me, you’re not very experienced in the world of rugby, the minis festival is a rugby tournament for players under 12. Various teams from across South Gloucestershire competed in the tournament at various levels. Despite being younger, the players gave it their all which made for some very interesting
action shots. There was also competition of another kind, with team members competing with each other to convince listeners that their team was best, and even a dance competition on the BSR stage. While all teams did well, there of course had to be winners. In the under 12s category Broad Plain won. North Bristol won in the under 9s category and the under 11s and Matson won the under 10s. The under 7s and 8s were non competitive, but I am reliably informed by some parents who were keeping track that the Bradley Stoke Youth Rugby teams did very well!
Overall, despite the weather and the fact that I wasn’t 100% sure what was going on a lot of the time, I enjoyed the challenge of photographing a rugby tournament and am pleased with many of the photos that I captured. More are available on my Facebook page, but here are a few of my favourites!

Bradley Stoke Beat Team PC Jamie Shiels reports Speed Awareness Week a success across Avon and Somerset

e’re right behind our Community Speed Watch volunteers (see the article in April’s Journal magazine), who play such a valuable role in helping to keep our roads and communities safe. In South Gloucestershire and across the Avon and Somerset area, police and volunteers were out in force targeting speeding during a special week of action in April. The week also highlighted the closer links that have been established between Community Speed Watch and the Speed Enforcement Unit (SEU). In addition to the existing speed check locations used by the SEU, they will in future be attending CSW locations where high levels of speeding are identified. Superintendent Richard Corrigan, the force’s road safety lead, said: “We used
this national week of action to launch a new highly visible Community Speed Watch logo that will start to be seen across the Constabulary area. These signs, coupled with an improved working relationship between volunteers and the Speed Enforcement Unit, will form a highly visible presence to reduce speeds and keep our communities safer. Where did all that time go?
ith the political rhetoric having been ratcheted up over the past few weeks in the approach to the general election, politicians of all persuasions have been putting some very big numbers about when discussing the NHS. We have been promised billions of pounds to provide thousands of nurses, thousands of new doctors in training, integrate services across health and social care providers to provide for hundreds of thousands of elderly patients. It makes your head spin trying to make sense of it all, and try to make an informed decision about what really matters. Having scraped off the politically driven froth, the one resource that does not appear to have been discussed
and reach a mutually agreed outcome. And that all means it is very difficult !! The local surgery is the most common point of first contact with the NHS for patients, and 90% of all consultations within the NHS on any day will take place here. In the past few years, the share of the NHS financial pot provided for community based care has dropped from 11% to the current 8.3% , at a time when our political leaders are making great plans about more care being provided through surgeries. The net result is that quality time is at a premium, so patients may have to wait longer to be seen, or not be able to discuss everything they wanted to within their allocated appointment. Some surgeries have introduced one

with any great emphasis is professional time, and that is what we all need more of. Whether it is time at your local surgery, time in a hospital out patient appointment, or time at home with a member of the community health care team. For the NHS managers who allocate funding streams for their political masters, it is a straightforward process to quantify numbers of operations undertaken, blood tests requested, or referrals made to a given specialist, but how do you quantify something abstract such as quality time, which is so important to the successful outcome of contact with the health service. The answer depends on a patient’s perception of their own health needs, and expectations of what should be provided to address those needs. The healthcare professional must try to understand and prioritise those needs within the resources available to them, and try
appointment one problem rules, vary appointment lengths and methods of booking, or direct patients to alternative health professionals to try and address this pressure on time. It is vital therefore that we all use our NHS quality time sensibly. Try and prepare what you want to discuss, and be mindful that healthcare professionals time must be available to hundreds of thousands of people living in South Gloucestershire, sometimes at very short notice. If you cannot keep an appointment, let your surgery know so it can be used by someone else. NHS time is wonderful and vital resource, we all have a responsibility to use it efficiently and appropriately if it is to provide for the whole community. Let’s hope the politicians understand as well.

eople become landlords for a variety of reasons. From buy to let investments to inheriting property, being a landlord is now a serious commitment, bound up in legislation and regulations that create prodigious amounts of paperwork; inventories, checking tenants in and out, registering deposits. Not forgetting gas and electrical safety checks and an EPC, all of which are now mandatory and being available at the drop of a hat, 24/7, to sort out problems. For landlords with time on their hands, this might be manageable, but is it worth the stress? A managing agent usually charges between 10 and 12% of the monthly rental to provide a fully managed service to landlords. A good managing agent has the entire service covered. From funding extensive advertising both online and in local papers to attract sufficient tenants to find the right one for your property, through to time-consuming accompanied viewings and thorough reference checks, getting the right tenant can take serious amounts of time. If you then add the time to prepare a detailed inventory (essential in today’s environment where landlords don’t control the deposit) organising routine maintenance, out of hours emergencies, quarterly checks and chasing rent payments and work out how many hours this all takes, suddenly even minimum wage begins to look attractive! Now this might make you wonder why anyone becomes a
managing agent; like anything, if you do something all day and everyday you become skilled and practised. Like anything in life, it helps to have the back up of training and professional qualifications, enabling seamless management of everything demanded for a successful letting. There is also another aspect which is not always considered; an agent also has the ability to provide an independent approach that enables them to manage both the tenant and the property effectively. Being responsible for someone else’s property is a great motivator; being able to take an unemotional view on an issue is sometimes essential. So does a managing agent earn the fee? A good one does. Kayleigh’s charity head shave in memory of late grandmother

eventeen year old Kayleigh Smallcombe, a Human Resources apprentice working for Circadian Trust at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre, has shaved her head to raise money for cancer and dementia charities, in memory of her late grandmother, Rose. Kayleigh decided to take the plunge after experiencing firsthand the pain of losing someone she loved dearly to dementia. Her decision to do this is a poignant one, as at the young age of 13 she was diagnosed with temporary alopecia, a hair-loss condition which dramatically dented her confidence. Ever since, she has shielded her condition with 18 inch hair extensions. Kayleigh explains: “It’s been a huge decision to have my hair shaved off, given that I’ve worked so hard to get over my alopecia, but I know it’s the right thing to do. Strangely, although the alopecia really knocked my confidence and I suffered from low self-esteem, this time the thought of losing my hair is making me feel more confident. If I can do this, I can do anything, and I want to help in any way I can.” Erica Cross, Kayleigh’s colleague

News Local Explorer Scout presented with Gold DofE Award at St James’s Palace
A
Bradley Stoke Explorer Scout has achieved the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Gold Award after completing challenges across five disciplines over a period of more than four years. Mollie Lockett, 19, was invited to St James’s Palace, London, on 11th March, to receive her award in the presence of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. Attending the Solar Explorer Scout Unit in Stoke Gifford, Mollie took the first steps towards her DofE Award at the age of 15, working through the Bronze and Silver levels before commencing the Gold programme when she turned 17. Each level of the award requires the completion of activities in the five categories of volunteering, physical, skills, expedition and residential. To make the grade, Mollie volunteered at her previous Scout group for over three years, learnt to drive and play the piano (skills), learnt ballet and trained in the gym (physical) and completed a number of expeditions with her Explorer unit. For the Gold award, she had to organise a week’s residential with an organisation that helps the community in some way. For this, she worked with CHICKS, a national children’s charity that provides free relief breaks for children who are under-privileged, disadvantaged, living in poverty or are carers themselves. CHICKS offers children a week long relief break at a number of locations around the UK, getting to go on what could be their only holiday that year. Mollie attended the CHICKS retreat centre in Cornwall and helped with a variety of fun activities including trampolining, horse riding, a day on the beach and face painting. “It was an amazing experience for me and was great fun for the

children too,” says Mollie. Her Gold expeditions consisted of hiking in the Brecon Beacons and Rhayader. Each of these hikes involved walking for four days and ‘green fielding’ for at least one night. Summing up her involvement with the DofE Award programme, Mollie said: “I thoroughly enjoyed completing my DofE award. Although it was tough and I faced many challenges, it was worth it! Planning, mapping, orienteering, team building and organisation skills are just a few of many that I learnt and I have found the whole experience invaluable. It has helped me when applying for university and is a brilliant addition on my CV.” “The people I have met and made friends with over the past four years will be friends for life. I couldn’t have done this without them or the support from my Explorer leaders! Not only that, I had a great laugh and lots of fun doing it!” Since starting her university course last year, Mollie has transferred from Explorers to the Scout Network, which offers a flexible programme of Scouting activities for adults aged 18 to 25.

Dementia support: Happy Memories Day for BME community

Patchway’s Dementia Action Alliance and Memory Café were set up as part of this in 2013, co-ordinated by Southern Brooks Community Partnerships, making Patchway one of the “dementia-friendly communities” across the UK. With the launch of the South Gloucestershire Dementia Action Alliance (SGDAA) in January 2015, there is much to celebrate. Challenges remain. There is still a lack of knowledge about dementia, particularly amongst other Minority Ethnic people living in South some communities. It’s turning out to be a busy spring schedule for Stokes Singers who were pleased to appear at the WI Area AGM on Tuesday 24th March. A selection of the songs which will be featured in the choir’s summer concert were performed and the choir were pleased to join the ladies is a rousing rendition of ‘Jerusalem’. The WI made a generous donation to Stokes Singers selected charity for this year, South West Air Ambulance. “In May, we will be singing for the residents at Osbourne Court in Stoke Gifford which we always look forward to as we’re made very welcome,” Sue Martin, the Choir Concert Coordinator confirmed. The title of Stoke Singers’ Summer Concert this year is ‘What a Wonderful World’ and it will include songs associated with places across the globe – from Argentina to Scotland; Copenhagen to California. The concert will take place on 27th June 2015 at the Church of Christ the King at 7.30pm. Tickets will be available from mid May; please call Liz Gazzard on 01454 614148 to reserve. Open mornings at Mama Bear’s nurseries
T
wo Bradley Stoke nurseries are offering parents the chance to bring their babies, toddlers and pre-school children along to free open mornings which aim to give a glimpse into nursery life. The Mama Bear’s Day Nursery and Pre-Schools on Great Park Road and in Baileys Court will be opening their doors on Saturday 16th May to welcome local families looking for nursery or pre-school for their children. The open days are a way to introduce children to childcare following the success of similar events at Mama Bear’s nurseries across the South West. From 10am to 1pm, children can enjoy arts and crafts activities, messy play and lots of cakes, while parents will have the chance to see what children get up to during a nursery day, tour facilities and find out more from staff. T
he lovely weather has brought out all of our members, who have reinstated an old pond, digging down to keep the water in and clearing away willow trees. In the process we found a wild honey bee nest, a queen hornet and one of our members unintentionally recreated the nursery rhyme Dr Gloucester!
Swans: Bradley & Brooke
While many are waiting for news of a royal birth, we are equally excited about our mute swans Bradley and Brooke, as they have again nested and this year Brooke has produced seven eggs. While we are all excited and we know everyone wants to take a look, please can we ask that you all keep your distance from the nest
and, for the sake of all the nesting birds, that all dogs are keep under control while at the lake. Like all expectant mothers, it’s important to remain healthy and birds are no different, which is why we’re suggesting a new ‘healthy eating plan’ for our ducks and swans at the lake. We’re not asking you to stop feeding the ducks, just please don’t feed them only white bread, as it’s really not good for them or the lake. A healthy alternative is cut grapes, duck pellets, grain, corn, shredded lettuce, cut vegetables and unfrozen peas. Thank you to Harry (aged 2) and his dad Rich who tested the new food for us, reporting back that the peas, grain and pellets were the ducks’ favourites, although neither Harry nor the

Green Gym
Green Gym is a small but friendly group who meet every Thursday at 10am for three hours’ conservation work on the reserve and in 2014 volunteered over 1,487 hours. The group has for many years been led by David Baker, although after a recent operation David has been persuaded to finally take a well earned rest and has stepped down as leader. Fortunately, David still attends when he can, as he knows more about the reserve than anyone else and his opinions and methods on how to deal with Himalayan Balsam are frequently sort after by many other groups in South Glos.
