Councils consult on MetroBus road widening proposals Major alterations planned for Aztec West Roundabout, Woodlands Lane junction and Bradley Stoke Way

S
outh Gloucestershire Council and Bristol City Council have opened an informal ‘pre-consultation’ on planned changes to road layouts, speed limits and parking arrangements along the route of the proposed North Fringe to Hengrove Package (NFHP) MetroBus Scheme, which was granted planning permission earlier this year. The ‘pre-consultation’ is a precursor to the preparation of statutory orders (Traffic Regulation Orders or TROs), which are expected to be published during 2015. MetroBus represents a major investment in public transport, which the councils hope will change the way people travel throughout South Gloucestershire and the Bristol area. It aims to create a new network of high frequency bus routes with fast and reliable services linking key areas of housing, jobs, and shopping. The NFHP scheme will link south Bristol with Cribbs Causeway and Emersons Green via the city centre. Locally, buses will travel from the Ring Road (A4174) along the yet-tobe-constructed Stoke Gifford
By-Pass before traversing the full length of Bradley Stoke Way up to the Aztec West Roundabout. The project will see a number of sections of new bus lane constructed along Bradley Stoke Way, including a long stretch running from the end of the existing bus lane adjacent to the Willow Brook Centre up to Patchway Brook Roundabout (near Aldi). There will also be major changes on the approach to the Aztec West Roundabout and reconfiguration of the Woodlands Lane junction. New MetroBus stops are planned adjacent to the Willow Brook Centre and close to Patchway Brook, Webbs Wood & Great Meadow Roundabouts. Digital versions of the plans can be viewed on the TravelWest website at www.travelwest.info/ NFHPconsult. Paper copies are available for inspection at Bradley Stoke Library. Comments must be submitted by 9th January 2015. An indicative construction timeline submitted with the NFHP MetroBus planning application suggested that construction work on the Bradley Stoke section of the route could start as early as April 2015 and last for 30 months.

South Glos Council to begin collecting unwanted green bins

S
outh Gloucestershire Council (SGC) has revealed that it is to start collecting “unwanted” green bins in a rolling programme that begins in December. The move follows the introduction of an opt-in annual charge for its bin-based garden waste collection service from 31st March 2014 and is aimed at households who have chosen not to pay. An “ad hoc” collection service using paper sacks costing £2 each is provided as an alternative for residents who require only occasional garden waste collection. Despite introducing the charge in March, the council previously said it would not be collecting unwanted green bins until “after
October”, in order to allow residents time to decide if they wished to subscribe to the new chargeable service. Residents of Bradley Stoke, Stoke Gifford, Frenchay, Stoke Park, Winterbourne, Frampton Cotterell, Yate, Dodington, Westerleigh and Chipping Sodbury will be the first to have their unwanted bins collected, in December. Green bins in all other areas will be scheduled for removal early in the New Year. Details of the green bin removal day will be provided on a leaflet that will be delivered to households one week before the collection. Unwanted bins must be put out by 7am on the day specified in the leaflet and must be empty.
The council warns that it will not collect any bins that contain waste, including garden waste. Residents who have chosen to use their green bin for another purpose may continue to do so, adds the council. Hans Christian Andersen – well known to most of us as a prolific Danish author of the Fairy Tales of our childhood – is the subject of the December South Glos Decorative and Fine Arts Society (SGDFAS) meeting on Thursday 11th December. SGDFAS welcomes Karin Fernald for a fascinating evening which will reveal there was so much more to this multi-talented and much travelled man – paper cuts, sketches, collages and flower arrangements – plus a look at some of his lesser known writing. The meeting takes place at Bradley Stoke Community School in Fiddlers Wood Lane. Refreshments available from 7pm, with the slide illustrated lecture starting at 7.30pm. Bus passengers hit by 10 per cent rise in cost of First Day Rider ticket

us passengers in Bradley Stoke who purchase First’s Inner Zone Day Rider ticket have been stung with a 10 per cent fare hike that came into effect on 30th November. The news comes at a time when reliability and punctuality on the 73, X73 and X74 services seems to have reached an all-time low, with more than a hundred complaints and observations about Bradley Stoke’s bus services being registered on The Journal’s website and on social media channels over the last five weeks.
First is blaming the need for the fare increase on a 17.6 per cent increase in passenger numbers over the past year, which it says has led to an increase in the average time taken for passengers to board its buses. This, combined with worsening traffic congestion, compounded by the number of road works across the city has created problems that need to be addressed, according to the press release that announced the change. First West of England’s new Managing Director James
A First West of England company spokesperson said: “We are concerned that the number of complaints regarding services 73 /X73 and X74 have continued to mount over recent weeks. To resolve some of the immediate issues, we have taken steps to bring in around 60 additional drivers to the city – who are being used to fill some gaps we previously had in our staffing levels. This has resolved some of the problems, but not all of them.” “We are continuing to tackle the timetable concerns that we, and our customers, have. These cannot be resolved overnight as timetables need to be planned and checked before being registered 56 days in advance of a change being made. We are working on it though, and are determined to build robust timetables that are better able to withstand the challenges that operating in and around Bristol can sometimes create. We expect these new timetables to be in place by 29th March 2015. We are also addressing, with our partners, the impact that external factors, such as roadworks, have on our services and our customers. “
Freeman said: “We want to expand, and we have plans to bring in more buses, more drivers, more routes and make transport in Bristol better, but at present we’re not able to grow as quickly as we want to be able to, and so we’re making this change to allow us to invest appropriately.” Speaking on BBC Radio Bristol, Mr Freeman said the company was looking at putting 20 more buses into the network from the next timetable change on 29th March 2015. ‘Fairer Fares’ campaigner Daniel Farr commented: “This rise will no doubt hit those who have no choice but to rely on public transport the hardest and it is not encouraging that this is the first decision made by the new managing director. I hope this
isn’t a sign of things to come!” For the second month running, The Journal sent a summary of bus passengers’ comments about the 73, X73 and X74 services to First. The company replied with a statement saying it was “concerned” that the number of complaints had continued to mount” (see panel, left). A company spokesperson could not confirm whether any additional buses would be introduced on the routes that serve Bradley Stoke.

Letters and Opinions ID checks at recycling centre a step too far? My husband took some items to the local recycling unit this morning, as we missed the collection last Friday. We are keen to recycle as much as we can and have used this facility for the 27 years that we’ve lived in Stoke Gifford. Despite the fact that the automatic registration number plate registered our vehicle correctly, he was stopped by a council worker and asked to produce either a photo driver’s licence or a local household bill before he could enter. The same was happening to other vehicles. As we carry neither of these documents with us, it was suggested that we return with some form of identification! I feel very strongly that this is a gross infringement of civil liberties and it takes ‘Big Brother’ to another level! I have been asked by a police officer to see
my licence but never a council worker! Our concern is that this may encourage further fly tipping where people who are denied access may well dump items instead of driving home and then back again with identification. As law abiding citizens, we have always paid our taxes and supported measures to make our locality a safer and more pleasant place to live. Traffic chaos down to immigration issue? For the last three mornings, I have been sat in traffic at 7.20am trying to get to work. On leaving work between 4.30pm and 5.30pm, I am sat in traffic again trying to return home and South
Gloucestershire Council seems to think that the proposal of yet more houses being built in our area is a good thing? They are joking aren’t they? Perhaps if they started to look after the people who voted them in (not sure who did because it wasn’t me) and pressured the Government to take hold of the massive immigration issue we have in this country instead of having to build more and more houses to accommodate the influx, we could concentrate on housing the British people living on the street! Remembrance service was a special event It was simply fantastic to witness the first Remembrance service in Bradley Stoke go as well as it did and be attended by so many. For me, the matter of Bradley Stoke’s very own memorial to pay tribute to and remember the fallen is one which was investigated for some time. I was delighted when Katherine Robinson approached me to assist with pushing the idea forward and with the very kind
help of the Willow Brook Centre and the 1st Bradley Stoke Scout Group, that idea became a reality. Although difficult at times, due to misplaced politicking, Katherine’s drive and resilience ensured the project steamed ahead and I’m honoured to have been able to support her in making this lasting memorial and tribute. The service was attended by a huge number of people, not to mention the 80 or so young people who paraded and spoke at what was a very moving service. Bradley Stoke’s very own veterans attended and it was brilliant to see so many of them there. The service was also attended by a Normandy veteran whose son lives in our town. My sincere thanks go to all who attended and supported the service. You made it as special as it was. With the Scouts’ focus on the inclusion of young people taking part in the parade and service, I’m sure the memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for this country will forever be remembered here. To those who served, still serve and the families who support them, thank you. Our parade and service will only grow stronger and I look forward to next year’s. Cllr Ben Walker Bradley Stoke

Firework display raises £3,389 for charities By Nikki Hallur esidents looked forward to another fireworks display to end the school half term holidays on Sunday, 2nd November. Similar to previous years, it was a wet day, but the rain eased off during the presentation hosted by Bradley Stoke Town Council. Crowds formed on the Jubilee fields, and it was a gathering which involved many families, with children enthusiastically participating in the community event. Most people were gathered on the main field directly adjacent to the Jubilee Centre, while some stayed around the park area. There was an initial delay due to residents standing on the top of the park steps (where the slides are): this area had to be kept clear, but those who had crowded on this

part of the field promptly moved down once they were asked to. The event itself was free, but volunteers for the event collected money in buckets, raising funds for the Great Western Air Ambulance and the Royal British Legion. Donations from the night added up to £3,389. The Mayor, Cllr John Ashe, thanked residents for their kind generosity in raising this amount of money, which he said in his press release “was a significant increase of £602 from the previous year.” He also mentioned that the amount collected for his nominated charities so far this year is £8,065. The presentation of light and colour was impressive, comprising a wide range of fireworks of different styles, from fountains of green, pink and purple, to golden sparks

and twists that lit up the night sky. Many of the residents took their own photos, and some had brought their own high-tech camera instruments to take pictures of the night. Most people had walked to the event, but parked cars did fill up the roads nearest to the Jubilee Centre for the duration of the event.

agreed at their November meeting of Full Council that the fireworks display had been “enjoyed by all who attended”. The only dissenting voice was that of Cllr Roger Avenin, who questioned whether the £7,221 cost of staging the event was “a good way to spend council’s money”.

‘Bobbly Stoke’ stunt a big hit with residents

T
he appearance of scores of colourful knitted bobble hats on bollards and sign posts in north Bradley Stoke at the end of October proved a big hit with local residents, many of whom took to social media to praise the efforts of a mystery group of ‘yarn bombers’ said to be behind the initiative. The bobble hat ‘attack’ was centred on Pear Tree Road, but hats also appeared on bollards and other street furniture at the top ends of Brook Way and Bradley Stoke Way. Posts supporting road signs on Patchway Brook Roundabout (near Aldi) were also given the ‘Bobbly Stoke’ treatment. A number of Journal readers reported seeing a group of four ladies putting out the hats at around 8pm on Monday 27th October. The results of their work were seen by hundreds of commuters the following morning and many were moved to record their thanks on the Bradley Stoke Journal’s Facebook page, where local resident Sara Messenger posted the first photograph, adding: “I love the 45 plus bobble hats that have appeared on Pear Tree Road. I’m told four ladies were out last night putting them in place, … I don’t know who you are ladies
but thank you for giving us all something to smile about.” It is believed that a total of around 57 bobble hats were put out on 27th October, but a fair number were stolen or damaged over the following days. However, all of the hats on the relatively inaccessible Patchway Brook Roundabout were still there as we went to press. A source believed to be involved with the initiative told The Journal’s editor that the ‘yarn bombing’ had been the idea of a group of children in Cooks Close area and had been carried out with the help of parents and other adults in the neighbourhood. Four days after the hats had appeared, someone going by the name of Julia Fillis posted on the Journal’s Facebook page: “Time to fess-up. Caroline Sullivan, Lily Sullivan (age 12), Addie Sullivan (age 9) all aided and abetted in this prank. Addie said we should brighten the place up and Ken had an old knitting machine in the loft. Thank you so much for your lovely comments and we hope you’ll all join in with the next event: ‘Adopt a lamp post for Christmas and decorate it’. We are so pleased that we made you all smile, your comments have made us smile too. x x”

Bradley Stoke Guiders looking for solutions Four Rainbow Guide leaders from Bradley Stoke recently gave up their Sunday lie-in to travel to the Haynes International Motor Museum where they joined 130 other leaders for a Rainbow Workshop. The aim of the day was to find new solutions to old problems, the most urgent being that there are 13,590 girls on Rainbow waiting lists. Almost a third of these girls are eligible to join now and almost a third are aged 4, so will be eligible in the next year. Bristol & South Glos alone has 669 girls on its waiting lists. Frozen food specialist Iceland is to open an outlet at the Willow Brook Centre in Bradley Stoke. The new Iceland store, which is expected to start trading at the end of February 2015, will be located in the ‘retail terrace’ unit previously occupied by shoe retailer Brantano, which ceased trading at the centre on Saturday 29th November. Iceland is said to be currently recruiting about 20 staff for its new Bradley Stoke store. Willow Brook Centre manager Andy Wynn said:“We are delighted to have Iceland opening at Willow Brook. The frozen food retailer will add another dimension to our strong food offer at the centre.” Launched in Oswestry in 1970, Iceland is amongst Britain’s fastest-growing food retailer with a network of more than 800 stores, annual sales in excess of £2.6 billion and over 25,000 staff around the UK. Australian singer Peter Andre has recently been signed to front the retailer’s advertising campaign.

he month of November brought mixed news for the hundreds of Bradley Stoke residents who are still waiting to benefit from the rollout of superfast broadband, whether through BT’s commercial programme (Filton exchange, 0117 numbers) or the state-aided upgrade programme being managed by South Gloucestershire Council (SGC, affecting mostly 01454 numbers). Frustrated customers within the postcode areas said by SGC to be served by cabinet no. 31 (located on the corner of Brook Way and Savages Wood Road) saw a glimmer of hope on 6th November when many of them reported that the cabinet was finally showing up in their BT Broadband Availability Checker result. However, many of them were not yet seeing the elusive Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) service as being ‘available’ on their lines.
Of those that were now able to order fibre broadband from the internet service provider (ISP) of their choice, several reported later on the Journal website that their installation appointments were subsequently cancelled or that the installation engineer had been unable to successfully install the service because of problems with the wiring in the cabinet. The first report of a successful fibre broadband installation came on 17th November, more than two months after cabinet no. 31 had officially been declared “live and ready for service” by SGC. There have also been reports from some readers of the BT checker result regressing to show the FTTC service as ‘unavailable’ when it had previously been ‘available’, in some cases after they had managed to place an order. As we went to press, there were plenty of readers on cabinet no. 31 reporting that they were
still waiting for the FTTC service become ‘available’ in their checker result. These reports came from residents living in Kemperleye Way, Hawkins Crescent, Linden Drive and The Culvert. One Journal reader on cabinet no. 31, Hisham from Hawkins Crescent commented: “It is very clear that the upgrade project has failed in communicating progress and updating the residents on what is happening and when.” “The broadband checker tells us we are connected to cabinet no. 31 but there is no sign of FTTC and this has been ongoing for a number of months. Our neighbours opposite and only a few doors down are able to order fibre, however we are not.” “This leads me to think that the work that has been completed on cabinet no. 31 is insufficient to meet demand or has not actually been completed. If this is a sign of the service
we expect to receive, then only disappointment awaits us.” Residents on cabinet nos. 30 (at the top end of Bradley Stoke Way, near the Hilton Hotel) and 36 (corner of Bradley Stoke Way and Brook Way, near Oaktree Crescent) will be hoping that they don’t have to endure the same saga of confusion and setbacks once their cabinets are (hopefully) declared “live and ready for service” in December. ● Journal editor Stephen Horton comments: I would urge anyone frustrated by the poor communications surrounding this project to write to their SGC ward councillor(s) and MP. Pudsey calls in at Bowsland Green

hildren and staff alike had great fun raising money for BBC children in need at Bowsland Green Primary school. The fun began at 3pm on Thursday 13th November when the one and only Pudsey Bear arrived at the school, thanks to our local Asda superstore. He popped in to all the classes and the children loved seeing him. The fun continued after school when parent Mrs Albrow arrived on site with trays of Pudsey bear biscuits and cakes to sell from
her employers Greggs bakery – they sold out in minutes! The school’s enthusiastic house captains sold Pudsey bear merchandise all week and yellow ears were spotted all around the place! radley Stoke Community School (BSCS) is proud to announce the release of ‘BSCS – The Album 4’. The latest album is a compilation of all original music written and performed by students of the school and the Olympus Academy Trust. The album is made up of nine tracks that we feel showcase the best musical talent at the school. The music is diverse, from acoustic pop to dubstep and rock, however, each track is catchy and sure to stick in your head. The album was recorded and mixed by in-house engineer and technician Joe Trott, using the school’s professional recording studio, over a period of three months. Each song is made up of several different instruments which are all recorded individually and mixed together to make the finished product, just as the pros do. Each of the students involved has put in a lot of time and effort to write and record their songs, with some students even offering their help and performing on other tracks. We are extremely proud of all of our students at BSCS and listening to the album confirms why, as there is not only a great deal of musical talent but there is a great deal of drive and determination behind the songwriting and performance, and it is clear that each musician is doing what they love most to the best of their ability. Through the camera lens by Becky Ward Bradley Stoke Remembrance ceremony
O
n 9th November, Remembrance Sunday was marked for the first time in Bradley Stoke in the town square. The town’s newly dedicated war memorial served as a central point for those who wished to come together to show their respect in the town of Bradley Stoke itself, rather than making the annual pilgrimage into Bristol or attending ceremonies in the surrounding communities. The day was marked by a traditional walking procession starting from the Jubilee Centre on Savages Wood Road. The parade included many of our local uniformed youth groups, such as the Scouts, Guides and Brownies, along with cadets from all branches of the armed forces as well as ex-forces personnel, town councillors and members of the Stoke Gifford Royal British Legion. On arrival at the Willow Brook
Centre, it was plain to see to all who were assembled, what it meant to all those who were participating, both young and old. It was an already poignant event made even more special by the fact that this was the first time such an event had taken place in our town. A ceremony of Remembrance was then held in the packedto-capacity town square; this included readings from children and members of the local Scouts and Brownies groups. The ceremonial element of the service was incredibly moving and, looking around the crowd, many a proud parent could be seen to have tears in their eyes. Wreaths were laid at the memorial for the first time by members of the Scouts, Guides, Brownies and Rainbows and local cadet forces, and a wreath on behalf of the town council was also laid by Cllr John Ashe,
the town’s Mayor. The two-minute silence was signalled by the playing of the last post and the entire square fell silent as one, people taking the time to perhaps remember their own nearest and dearest as well as those in the forces. Reveille sounded the end of the time for silent contemplation and brought the first-ever Bradley Stoke Remembrance ceremony to a close. It was a very special occasion that, to my mind, showed our community of Bradley Stoke at its best!

pub/restaurant in Bradley Stoke is hoping to put smiles on the faces of deprived children through a Christmas gift appeal. Donna Telford, manager of Winter Stream Farm on Old Gloucester Road, has put gift tags with the names and ages of underprivileged children in the local area on a Christmas tree in the car park of the pub and is asking customers to take a tag and return with an appropriate gift-wrapped present. Social services will then collect
the gifts and distribute them in time for Christmas. Donna, who has run the gift appeal for more than ten years at various establishments she has managed, said: “Over the years, lots of guests have told me they have wanted to help, but didn’t know how, so we have created a drop-off point for people wishing to donate a gift.” The age range of the children who will benefit from the appeal is from birth to 16. Gifts need to be handed in at the pub by Thursday 18th December.

Local children to take centre stage at the Willow Brook Centre Performances to take place throughout December

ocal youngsters will get the opportunity to show off their talents at a Children’s Festival hosted by the Willow Brook Centre throughout December. The festival has been put together by Willow Brook and
Explore Learning to give local children’s groups and clubs a platform to show shoppers what they can do. The groups cater for children of all ages from babies through to teenagers and include dance, music, scouts and even first aid. Willow Brook is also running a competition for local primary school children aged 7 to 11 to write a Christmas story. The five winning stories picked from each age group will be included in a short book titled “Christmas Stories, by the Children of Bradley Stoke”. Andy Wynn, centre manager, said: “There are lots of fantastic clubs and groups that cater for children of all ages in our community. We wanted to put them centre stage at Willow Brook so parents and children could learn more about what there is to get involved in.” Claire Wingate, who runs Bradley Stoke’s Babyballet, said: “When I asked my children and their parents if they would like

A sponsored walk by staff, parents and children from Abacus Pre-school @ Meadowbrook (see photo, left) has raised £430 for Children in Need. Pre-school manager Katy Rowe said: “It was a lovely sunny morning and everyone dressed up (including two Pudsey bears!)” “We walked to Tesco, where we collected some change from people doing their shopping, as well as some kind donations from the fruit and vegetable stall. We then walked to the leisure centre and finally to the duck pond, where the children enjoyed seeing the wildlife. In all, we walked 2km which took us one hour with all our stops!”

The Woodcraft Folk have two groups in Bradley Stoke, between them running activities for children from the ages of 6 to 12. The groups’ programme includes not only games and craft, but also an evening in the outdoors every half term. This autumn, both groups met up for an evening of fire lighting at Hortham Farm, near Almondsbury. The early sunset at this time of year is really well suited to fire lighting activities. Everyone had a chance to have a go at lighting their own small fire using a flint and steel to get the fire started. It takes a bit of practice to be able to strike a spark, but soon each group had a small fire burning. The fires were used to cook pop corn and to toast marshmallows. Then after a few songs it was time to head back home. The evening was such a success that already plans are forming to return to the site when it gets warmer for a bivouac under the stars, and camp fires are sure to be a big part of the summer camp on the Dorset coast. Hundreds turn out to see Mr Bloom switch on Willow Brook Christmas lights
A
massive crowd turned out at Bradley Stoke’s Willow Brook Centre on Saturday 22nd November to see CBeebies’ Mr Bloom (actor Ben Faulks) switch on the Christmas lights. The fun packed day started at 11am when Santa opened his grotto in the mall. There were also three fabulous shows on the hour from Bjorn – a stunning lifelike polar bear – and his herder Ursula. tournament, but two defeats by SGS College saw them settle for second spot. On Friday 14th November, children from all over the area could be seen arriving at school dressed in a pyjamas, stripes and spots to raise money for Children in Need. The children at Stoke Lodge raised an amazing £354 by dressing up and selling cakes. BSCS raised £871 through a non uniform day and St Chad’s went with a ‘Funny Hair’ day raising £160. Congratulations to everyone who took part in the great fundraising efforts. The Bradley Stoke Radio Schools Show covers all schools in the local area and beyond. We play children’s music and have children reading their poems, topic work and stories - in fact anything they feel they want to share. It is aired on Monday evenings during term time, between 6pm and 7pm.

Around the schools s children at schools all over the country stood in silence on the 11th of November, the children at Wheatfield Primary School had special reasons to remember as they were at the end of eight weeks learning about World War One. The learning was shared with parents on the following Friday with two special assemblies where children performed dance and songs of the time and read poetry and writing they had been working on. Headteacher Miss Dursley said that it was one of the most successful topics the school had ever done with classwork, homework, art, dressing up, singing, music and dance all included. On Friday 7th November, Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS) hosted the Lord’s Taverners Bristol, Bath and South Gloucestershire Boccia Area Championships. With two teams of their own in action, and other students umpiring, they were joined by nine other schools and colleges to compete in two separate tournaments on the day. Representing the Boccianators were Max Norman, Thomas Humphreys and Jake Norman but they came up against Brimsham, with their notoriously strong side and it was Brimsham that took the medals that day. Bradley Stoke’s second team WonderCrew made up of Owen Damsell, Harrison Grove, James Battson and Bailey Spiller were extremely competitive in their

A New Year’s resolution
t seems that not a week goes by without a story about the NHS hitting the headlines in the national and local media. Rarely are they complimentary, hospitals unable to cope with rising demand, intolerable waits in accident and emergency departments, cancelled operations, patients unable to see doctors in their local surgeries for weeks, and ambulances unable to reach the seriously ill. This depressing cocktail of woe, is further complicated by journalists looking for the tagline, and politicians making sweeping claims about how they will improve access, efficiency, reduce waiting times, and ensure that all treatments are offered and at time and a place to suit everyone free at the point of use.
However noble these aspirations and early successes, it would have been difficult to envisage the dramatic advances and costs in medical technology, and expectations that the NHS is now expected to provide for. Keyhole surgical procedures, joint replacements, coronary artery bypass surgery, organ transplants, renal dialysis, and fertility treatment are now all provided within a healthcare structure drawn up in the 1940s. There is no doubt that parts of the NHS are under enormous pressure, and that a great many health care professionals, are working long hours to try and maintain a quality service to the patients they serve. Over the next few months as we approach the general election, there will be a great deal of

Before we man the barricades in readiness for the arguments about what should be done to cure these apparent ills, let’s remember where the NHS has come from. Prior to the National Health Service Act of 1948, access to medical treatment meant paying the accompanying bill, or relying on the local parish or charitable hospital boards for free care, sometimes in ill equipped wards run by poorly qualified staff. The hope of the government was that by offering a state funded service to remove the inequality of access and inconsistency in standards of care, society as a whole would become more healthy, productive, and content. Many of the early large scale public health programmes such as the vaccinations against polio and tuberculosis, were responsible for a dramatic reduction in early deaths and chronic debility associated with these infections.
debate on the role of the NHS in contemporary Britain, how it is funded, what it should be providing, and who is entitled to its care. So let’s cut through the sensationalised press headlines, and the evidence free, populist political rhetoric, and ask ourselves what do we actually need from this wonderful institution, and not simply what do we want. Equally as important is what does the NHS want from us? We all have a responsibility to use the NHS appropriately when we call upon it, and prevent or reduce our risks of needing it in the first place. So here are my suggestions for a few New Year’s resolutions: Cut back on the portions of roasties, do a bit more exercise, recognise the importance of self reliance, and keep the important stuff ahead of the trivia. It is going to be a very interesting year! Have a very happy, and very healthy Christmas and 2015.

Team in place at new Happy Days nursery
A
team of staff has been appointed as work nears completion on a new Happy Days nursery site in Bradley Stoke. Emersons Green-based Uplands Construction has finished work at the 100-place nursery site at the Almondsbury Business Centre, with deliveries of furniture enabling the fit-out to be completed. Staff training and a series of open days during December will take place before the new nursery opens its doors to customers in the new year. Bradley Stoke will the first Happy Days nursery in Bristol. In April, following £3.9 million of investment, the Cornwall-based company announced plans to expand throughout the South West.
The new team will be headed up by nursery manager Julie Bright, who brings over 15 years’ industry experience including managing other nurseries in Bristol and North Somerset. She said: “I am really excited about becoming part of Happy Days and working closely with my new team and families in the city.” “This is a great opportunity for all the staff here to be part of something really exciting – we can’t wait for the beginning of next year and seeing our first children.” Working with Julie, the start-up team consists of supervisor Emma Reading, 27 from Southville and nursery nurse Megan Bloomer, 21 from Bradley Stoke. Nursery administrator Sarah Chesworth has recently been appointed leaving just a

supervisor, a deputy manager and a cook to make up the staff. The team are now looking forward to open days for families, which start on Saturday 6th December, as well as events for schools and local businesses. Nicola Brookes, operational development manager for Happy Days, said: “It’s a really exciting time for us and it’s great that we can be bringing new jobs to the city with this expansion into Bristol. “It’s always a challenge breaking into a market where we are unknown, but we have
been really well received. In Brief We conducted a speed watch on Saturday 15th November 2014 on Bradley Stoke Way, near the Willow Brook Centre (on both sides of the safety barrier, i.e. bus lane side and opposite side). Five members of the local Community Speed Watch team were present plus our training manager and PCSO Ben Sheward. In total 870 vehicles were counted with 35 vehicles exceeding the speed limit, three of which were travelling in the bus lane. Warning letters will be sent out by the police to the offending drivers, which may result in prosecution should they have received any previous warnings. News “Last pumpkins in town” secured for Bradley Stoke in Bloom carving contest

alloween seems so far away now, but our Welcome planters enjoyed a spooky make over and our children’s pumpkin carving contest was very well received. We would like to think it was because it was just fun, but it may also have had something to do with us having the very last pumpkins in Bradley Stoke! When we collected them from the Tesco Extra store, the usually hale and hearty Ash paled and suggested that we and the pumpkins be escorted out the back door as he didn’t think we’d all make it out the front in one piece! The carved pumpkins were judged by Joy Souch, who is the administrator for the Willow Brook
Centre, and although we’d bought three prizes, Joy was so impressed with the children’s creations that an extra prize was created. First place went to Luke Willman, second to Niobe Power, third to Livvi and the special prize to Zoe Willman, who each received a winner’s certificate and a large box of sweets. Luke also received a pumpkin growing kit. Everyone who entered received a certificate and a bag of spooky marshmallows. All money raised was spent on the running costs of the competition. Thank you to everyone who took part for being such fun and to Tesco Manager Kevin Vickery for donating the pumpkins and the marshmallows.

Bradley Stoke Beat Team Keeping you safe this Christmas and New Year

e’re running a Christmas-themed campaign this month to crack down on drink-related issues that can seriously spoil your festive fun. At this time of year around one in every five arrests are for assaults, and a significant number of these are caused by people drinking too much. We want to raise awareness to reduce the number of offences, like criminal damage and public disorder. The number we deal with is relatively low, but we’d like that to be even fewer. Neighbourhood PC Jamie Shiels said: “We all like to enjoy ourselves at Christmas time, but no-one wants to end up being arrested and having to phone home to tell their family they’re spending the night in a police cell.” “So many offences we’re
highlighting can be prevented. We want to encourage everyone to think about the amount they drink and irresponsible behaviour that can follow, and help prevent them from doing something they’ll regret.” Over the festive period there’ll be an increased police presence in town and city centres on busy nights, as well as a range of other measures such as specific operations to target drug misuse and patrols of anti-social behaviour hotspot areas. Officers will also be visiting bars, pubs, off licences and other venues to remind people that a drunken night can have a big impact on them and people around them if it leads to violence or disorder. ● Our next beat surgery will take place at the Willow Brook Centre on Wednesday 17th December between 5pm and 6.30pm.

radley Stoke Physio’s Kim Cheffey recently joined Bristol Academy Women’s Football Club (BAWFC) in Barcelona where the team made history and qualified for the Champions League quarter finals. Sports massage therapist Kim spent four days with the BAWFC at the Mini Etsadi Camp, opposite the renowned Nou Camp where Barcelona train. Key to helping the squad get ready for the all-important match against Barcelona, Kim assisted the sports therapist in ensuring the team was in top shape for the match. On call 12 hours a day to provide treatment needed by the players to keep them supple and relaxed, Kim also delivered stretching, strengthening and agility classes. It was a strict regime for the players who could only train during the evenings due to the heat, and had to have their fluid and nutritional intake
constantly monitored. Kim was pitch-side for the big game, ready to treat any squad member who was injured. Luckily, this was not necessary as Bristol Academy took control of the game from Barcelona in the second half to win the match 1-0. In doing so, BAWFC secured their first ever Women’s Champions League quarter final place and became the last English team standing in the competition. Kim said: “This was an amazing experience for me. To
work with top football players at such a defining moment in their career is such a privilege. They’d better watch out though – I’m already planning the conditioning programme that I’ll deliver in preparation for the next qualifying round. It’s going to be tough, but it should help give them the edge over their opponents.” Co-Director of Bradley Stoke Physio, Louise Dodds, said: ‘We’re really proud of Kim. She’s really worked hard for the position with BAWFC, and you can see that her clients at our clinic, both elite and amateur athletes, are really benefiting from her new experience. n Monday 27th October, I presented the 50th edition of Bradley Stoke Radio’s (BSR’s) Monday Community Show. The show has featured a wide range of interesting people, community groups and charities from the local community since the station started broadcasting on 103.4 FM back in September 2013. 14-year-old Hannah Evans, who works behind the scenes to find guests for the show, and local community action woman Sara Messenger (Bradley Stoke in Bloom) joined me during the 50th show, to look back at some of the highlights. Sara was one of my guests on the first show, and was the first person to feature in the ‘People in the Community’ slot. As the name suggests, the show gives community groups and charities a voice, to showcase what they do, and how they benefit the wider community. We are also keen for people to

November in the Three Brooks nature reserve Our November workday saw us return to the winter task of coppicing, this month along the main path in Savages Wood. The area has been opened up and the cut wood will be used to reinforce the dead hedges we have on the reserve. Because of the issue with Ash Die Back, the Ash trees remain untouched until the threat has passed. Green Gym, who have volunteered 1,352 hours so far this year, have begun our annual bird box survey. Sadly we found most of the boxes made by the ‘Dream scheme’ children have been vandalized, we were told by a dog walker that he had witnessed boys wearing the local school uniform, behaving oddly and when he went over, he found a damaged box on the ground with five baby birds trampled into the dirt. As you may have already seen, SGC have again been able to include the reserve in their work schedules, and have already begun cutting back some hedgerows and clearing bramble from the paths, much to the surprise of one resident who had, until their arrival, been enjoying a secluded morning dip in his hot tub! With apologies to the little ones who enjoy splashing in the puddles, but at the request of two walkers, Green Gym has put in some drainage channels along the main path. One of the SGC Tree Officers, while on the reserve to inspect the latest round of vandalism, was last seen quietly sinking into one of our muddier paths, the result of which is that he will review the objections to our plans to put in better paths! We found quite an interesting assortment of items on the reserve this month, a house & black keys, 24p, a marquee, two tarpaulins, a pregnancy test, full aerosol cans, empty beer cans and 15 DVD security cases from the local supermarket, which were handed to local Police. Bristol City FC players undergo oxygen treatment in Bradley Stoke
T
he West of England MS Therapy Centre (MSTC) in Wheatfield Drive, Bradley Stoke has recently been welcoming players from Bristol City Football Club (BSFC), who have been using the Centre’s Oxygen Treatment chamber in a bid to reduce post-injury recovery times. Most recently, defender Mark Little has been having sessions in the chamber to speed up his rehabilitation from a hamstring strain, in the hope that he will be fit to return to action in some important upcoming fixtures. Other key players including Kieran Agard – one of the club’s top goal scorers – and midfielder Korey Smith have also had sessions to aid their recovery from injury. Oxygen treatment has long been used to speed up the
healing of sports injuries, with many premiership football clubs investing in their own treatment chambers. Without sufficient oxygen, the strength of the tissue repair is much weaker than normal. In order to get more oxygen into the blood and speed up the healing process it is necessary to use a special pressure chamber like the one used at the MS Therapy Centre. As BCFC’s Head Physiotherapist, Steve Allen, says: “The high number of matches we play puts massive physical pressure on the squad, so it’s more crucial than ever that we keep our key players fit and do all we can to ensure they recover quickly from injury. We’re really fortunate to have the West of England MSTC’s oxygen treatment chamber so nearby to help us achieve this.”
Treatment for sports injuries is offered via The Bristol Therapy Centre Ltd, a trading arm of The West of England MSTC. The Bristol Therapy Centre Ltd operates in support of the MSTC, a charity which offers various therapies to help people with Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological conditions manage their symptoms. Some of the therapies, including oxygen treatment, are also available to people with nonneurological conditions such as arthritis, as well as for sporting or post-operative injuries. By Moira de Groot of North Bristol Running Group t’s that time of year when we start thinking about what we are going to do to improve ourselves or what new challenges we plan on setting ourselves in the New Year. Why not join us? We are a group of mixed ability runners – and I really mean that! Some of us run marathons and half marathons, some the Bradley Stoke 10k, some run regularly, some of us struggle to make a mile without a rest and some of us are brand new to running. We all try to achieve our goals and none of us judge. We are a supportive, friendly bunch who meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, during school term time, at 9.15am, outside the Bradley Stoke

doctor’s surgery for a run (and a bit of a chat!) We welcome ladies and gents, shift workers, parents of school kids, retired folk, in fact, everyone! We aim to run about 5kms, but are more than happy for people to walk part of the route or head for home when they have done what they can. Some of the group choose to run further – it really is up to the individual. The group is informal and there is no membership. Just turn up (that is the hardest part) when you can and let us help you achieve your goal. If you would like to start running, join a running group or push yourself a little harder, why don’t you join the School Run! A Bristol-based nursery group has celebrated the opening of its twentieth setting with the addition of a nursery in Bradley Stoke. The family-run Mama Bear’s Day Nursery group has taken over the former Butterflies Day Nursery site on Great Park Road to offer high quality childcare for 104 local children aged between three months and five years. The opening follows the addition of new nurseries in Whiteladies Road and Totterdown earlier in the year and takes the group’s total to 20 settings across the South West. Owner of Mama Bear’s Day Nursery Bev Driffield said: “We are so excited to be opening a new nursery in Bradley Stoke and adding to our portfolio of muchloved nurseries in Bristol.” Mama Bear’s will be offering free registration for new families until 31st March 2015. ● See advert on page 3.
