A couple of events over the past few weeks have shown that ‘people power’ is alive and kicking in Bradley Stoke. After strong opposition from residents, councillors voted to abandon a controversial policy, introduced only last year, that could have led to two mobile food traders operating in the car parks of each of the town council’s three activity centres. As well as showing the council to be seriously out of touch with residents’ feelings, the episode has upset the traders currently operating at the sites and left new applicants with bills for abandoned licence applications. Just a week later, customers of a small ‘fruit & veg’ business that
had been allowed to begin trading in the town square at the Willow Brook Centre in June were told by the stallholder that the centre had served him notice to quit because of an objection from Tesco. A petition was organised, gathering more than 400 signatures in the first 24 hours. The following day, Willow Brook announced the “good news” that the stall would be staying. Of course, the latter situation would probably not have arisen if another (now disbanded) council had not, many years ago, allowed all the land in Bradley Stoke’s town centre to pass into the hands of a single owner, i.e. Tesco, creating a monopoly of control. Office complex set to be demolished to make way for care home
A
collection of office buildings on a large site in north Bradley Stoke looks set to be demolished to make way for a care home after South Gloucestershire Council granted outline planning permission for a proposed redevelopment scheme. Under the plans, Fountain Court, a group of five two-storey office blocks on the north side of Woodlands Lane, located between Woodlands Park and The Orchard public house, will be replaced by a care home with 80 beds and 8 ‘close care’ apartments. It is expected that 80 ‘full-time equivalent’ jobs will be created by the new care home, split over
three shifts. Permission was granted despite objections from Bradley Stoke Town Council, which claimed the plans contain inadequate/insufficient parking provision, and a neighbour living opposite the site, in Ottrells Mead, who said the application “failed to fully consider the detrimental effect it will have on the surrounding dwellings and the long term prosperity of Bradley Stoke”. Officers assessing the application expressed concern that changing the designated use of the site from Class B1 (business) to Class C2 (residential institution) might result in a reduction in the

However, they noted that “the premises have remained largely vacant in a large part for a number of years” and that “there is a profusion of vacant offices of the Fountain Court standard”. WW1 exhibition heading for Bradley Stoke
S
outh Gloucestershire has received £60,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for its ‘South Gloucestershire and the First World War’ project, which includes a touring exhibition that will visit Bradley Stoke for four weeks from 1st September. The First World War Centenary project will involve local community heritage organisations working with South Gloucestershire Council to improve public engagement with the anniversary. The district council will be coordinating a range of activities which will help communities to access and interpret the First World War heritage held by local organisations. To mark the declaration of war in 1914, the project has created an exhibition which shows the impact of the war in this area and how communities were

changed in other countries with which South Gloucestershire is now twinned. The exhibition will tour public venues in South Gloucestershire to engage directly with local communities. As part of the project, an engagement officer from
the council will work with community heritage groups and both formal and informal learning groups providing guidance and training for volunteers. In addition, South Gloucestershire twinning associations will liaise with their counterparts in other countries to obtain material to contribute to exhibitions delivered by community organisations. The exhibition was launched on Wednesday 23rd July at the Tesco supermarket in Yate. Chairman of South Gloucestershire Council Cllr Howard Gawler presented the opening address, Deputy Store Manager Steve Baker spoke on Tesco’s behalf and Vice Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire Robert Bernays OBE also attended and gave a speech. Cllr Gawler said: “We are
grateful for the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund to fund the development of this essential project which will provide a central base for the many centenary projects which are happening throughout South Gloucestershire. By working with the many heritage organisations in the area, this project will ensure that the centenary is commemorated locally and show the effect of the First World War on individuals and communities in South Gloucestershire.” Tesco’s Regional Corporate Affairs Manager Jack Pearson said: “We’re delighted to be hosting the exhibition and to be supporting the centenary project. We know how important it is and hope that customers will find it interesting and insightful. We hope that by hosting the exhibition as many people as possible will be able to see it.” The official opening also featured poetry readings which included recitals of ‘Aftermath’ by Siegfried Sassoon and the ‘Hawkesbury Hospital’ by Sergeant E Rex, along with a performance of period songs by local singer Rachael Hunt. The exhibition will remain at the Tesco supermarket in Yate for four weeks before moving on to the Tesco store in Bradley Stoke for a further four weeks, after which it is available for other venues in the area. Council vehicle ruined in suspected arson attack at Baileys Court
T
housands of pounds of damage has been caused in a suspected arson attack on storage containers located on the edge of the cricket field at the Baileys Court Activity Centre. Fire crews from Patchway, Southmead and Soundwell attended the incident shortly after 3am on Tuesday 22nd July. On arrival, they found one of the containers well alight. The fire was extinguished by four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus using a 45mm jet reel and a high pressure hose. A spokesperson for the Avon Fire & Rescue Service said it is believed the fire had been started deliberately.
The main part of the fire was in a container used by Bradley Stoke Town Council to house its threewheel ‘tuk-tuk’ maintenance vehicle, which was completely destroyed (photo). The container is also believed to have housed equipment belonging to Bradley Stoke in Bloom (BSiB) and Bradley Stoke Radio. Smoke and heat damage was also caused to equipment owned by Bradley Stoke Cricket Club stored in an adjoining container. The Journal has heard from a number of sources that an attempt had been made to break into the containers the previous night (Sunday night/Monday morning). Council bins controversial new food trader policy after just nine months
A
controversial new policy that potentially allowed up to two mobile food traders to operate in the car parks of each of Bradley Stoke’s three council-run activity centres has been abandoned just nine months after being introduced. The move follows a series of seemingly contradictory decisions by councillors that led to two potential new operators withdrawing their street trading licence applications, leaving the applicants out of pocket by hundreds of pounds and the council missing out on an anticipated increase in rental income from its sites. The town council’s Finance Committee agreed last October to allow up to two traders to operate at each of its sites, but the first trader to apply for a ‘no.
2′ pitch under the new policy, Papas Pizzas (wishing to trade at the Brook Way Activity Centre), subsequently withdrew his application for a street trading licence after learning he would also have to foot the costs of applying for ‘change of use’ planning permission. The same Finance Committee later rejected a proposal made by Cllr Brian Hopkinson, the main proponent of the multiple food trader policy, that the council should pay the ‘change of use’ planning application costs of any trader wishing to take on a new pitch at a council-owned site. A further setback followed in April 2014, when the council’s Planning Committee voted to object to a street trading licence application from Marmaris Kebabs to trade on a ‘no. 2′

pitch at the Baileys Court Activity Centre, after residents in the surrounding area voiced concerns. As a result of the committee’s decision, the town council felt obliged to withdraw its offer of a pitch, meaning that the trader had no choice but to withdraw the street trading licence application he had made to South Gloucestershire Council. Speaking during the public participation session at June’s special meeting of Full Council, a neighbour of the Jubilee Centre described the situation with the council’s new multiple food trader policy as “shambolic” and called for it to be revoked.
Councillors distance themselves from decision
The matter was subsequently discussed at July’s meeting of Full Council, where the town clerk explained that she had asked for it to be put on the agenda because the process had been “very confusing for the applicant [for a no. 2 pitch] at Baileys Court”. During discussion, several councillors attempted to distance themselves from the original decision made by the Finance Committee, with Cllr Ben Walker saying: “I said at the time it was a ridiculous proposition. We should revert immediately to the original policy of having one trader at Brook Way, one
at Baileys Court and none at the Jubilee Centre. If we don’t do that, we’re likely to have our own Planning Committee contradicting us again. We should sincerely apologise to the applicant [for a no. 2 pitch at Baileys Court]. It’s outrageous what we’ve done.” Cllr Keith Cranney voiced similar opinions, saying: “I always had reservations about this. We should have consulted with residents before this was taken to Finance and pushed through. We are very lucky that the Baileys Court applicant didn’t allow his street trading licence application to go to a hearing and then call for a judicial review after it was rejected.” Cllr Cranney also referred to a policy in South Gloucestershire Council’s draft local plan, which states that: “Takeaways within 400m of schools and youth facilities will not be permitted where they would be likely to influence behaviour harmful to health or the promotion of healthy lifestyles.” Following further discussion, Cllr Walker’s proposal that the council’s policy change be reversed was carried by seven votes to nil, with two abstentions. ● See letters (page 24): “Council out of line on mobile food traders”

Fruit stall allowed to stay at Willow Brook after public outcry Tesco’s “block” lifted following customer petition
P
eople power appears to have won a reprieve for a popular ‘fruit & veg’ business that had reportedly been told it would have to quit the Willow Brook shopping centre due to objections from the Tesco Extra store within the same development. Ronnie’s Fruit & Veg began trading in the town square at the centre on 4th June and had been warmly welcomed by Bradley Stoke shoppers. Stallholder Warren Shepherd told The Journal at the time that there had been “no issues” with the nearby Tesco Extra store, which has an extensive fruit and vegetable department. But barely a month after opening, that situation appeared to have changed, with Mr Shepherd telling shoppers he had been given notice to quit by the Willow Brook Centre management because of
“objections from Tesco”. One customer, Catherine, contacted The Journal on 13th July to say: “As a local person, I am very unhappy that the fruit & veg market have been told by Tesco that they can no longer trade. Surely, as a democratic country, we can choose where we buy our goods. Tesco just shouldn’t be threatened by the little guys, and that is what they are. Please can we do something about this? Come on good people of Bradley Stoke we can make a difference?” More than a dozen similar messages were received by The Journal over the following days and similar sentiments were expressed on a number of local Facebook groups. On Wednesday 16th July, Mr Shepherd began a customer petition calling for the stall to be allowed to stay at the centre

The Journal approached the Willow Brook Centre management for a statement and they responded on Thursday 17th July, saying: “Both Willow Brook and Tesco are passionate about working with local communities and promoting local businesses wherever possible.” “Ronnie’s Fruit & Veg stall has been at Willow Brook for a few weeks now on a trial basis and customers have said that they love being able to shop at the stall. We’re really keen to see the stall continue to offer great service to local people and have agreed that they’ll keep their
current pitch in the town square.” Tesco declined to provide a statement explaining its view of the situation, in particular why it had wished to “block” the stall from trading. A spokesperson for the firm referred The Journal to the comment already released by the Willow Brook management.

Air ambulance pays flying visit to school By Mark Blaszczyk, Teacher at Little Stoke Primary School n Monday 7th July, pupils, parents, staff and governors gathered excitedly on the playing fields of Little Stoke Primary school, gazing intently into the cloudless sky. Suddenly, there it was! Cheering and waving spread as young and old alike pointed to the fast approaching object in the sky. The Great Western Air Ambulance briefly circled the playing field before pilot John Rigby skilfully set down and the deafening roar of the engines finally subsided. John and his team, a paramedic and a doctor, then welcomed groups of children to come, almost within touching distance of the helicopter, as the role of the Air Ambulance in emergencies was explained.

The captivated audience then saw the stretcher bay in the rear, high tech equipment aplenty and the pilot’s controls and instrument panel. An informative explanation of the workings of the helicopter, fascinating to all, then followed. Budding pilots were especially curious as to the lack of a steering wheel! Really thoughtful questions from the children were skilfully handled by the team for almost an hour when a call came through and it was time for the Air Ambulance to depart to a genuine emergency somewhere in the county. In a matter of minutes, the rotors were again turning, the decibel level rose and the helicopter was airborne and away, to even louder cheers and clapping. Children were completely
enthralled by the experience and letters of thanks written (see example below). What a special event this was for all involved, one that will stay in our minds for a long, long
time to come. “Whenever I see a helicopter I’m going to think of the Air Ambulance,” said Luke aged 7. That sums up all our thoughts, and our appreciation for this publicly funded charity.

Superfast broadband project tackles EO lines
W
ork is now under way to bring superfast fibre broadband to hundreds of premises on exchange only (EO) telephone lines in Bradley Stoke. Homes connected via EO lines have, until now, seen no benefit from South Gloucestershire Council’s state-subsidised infrastructure upgrade programme, which has initially focussed on upgrading existing street cabinets using ‘fibre to the cabinet’ (FTTC) technology. In order to bring superfast broadband to premises served by EO lines, BT Openreach, the council’s contractor, will be rearranging the existing copper network and installing additional
fibre-enabled street cabinets. A council spokesperson told The Journal: “Excellent progress continues to be made with the EO lines solution in Bradley Stoke. This is a much more complex process than the FTTC upgrades and so takes more time to plan and deliver. We are also one of the first areas to implement the solution for EO lines, so we are leading the way with regards to this solution.” “Of the five EO cabinets planned from the Almondsbury exchange, four will be in Bradley Stoke: no. 30 is planned to be erected at the top of Bradley Stoke Way [near the Hilton hotel], no. 31 at the junction of Brook Way and Savages Wood

We won’t know this until closer to the time, as BT Openreach are constantly working to bring as many EO lines into the new cabinets as possible, in order to push the

Using pedal power to help fight blood cancer
C
yclists in the Bristol area are being urged to sign up and set their wheels in motion to raise money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research at the Martin Dean Bristol Bikeathon on 21st September 2014. Over 100 riders are expected to take part in the event at the Willow Brook Centre, Bradley Stoke and turn their pedal power into cash to help fund vital research in Leukaemia, Lymphoma and other blood cancers. This event offers two rides; one is a family-friendly 15-mile ride suitable for riders of all ages, using local pathways and quiet roads and the other is a 50-mile cycle through the beautiful South Gloucestershire countryside.

Gromits reunited at Wheatfield summer fayre
G
romberry and Butterfly, two Gromit sculptures that featured in last year’s massively popular Gromit Unleashed trail, were the star attractions at Wheatfield Primary School’s summer fayre on Saturday 5th July. Visitors to the event were given the opportunity to be photographed with Gromberry and Butterfly, along with Wheatfield’s very own miniGromit Zenny, in return for a small donation to Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal, a charity which raises funds for the Bristol Children’s Hospital. John Morris, whose son Calum is a pupil at Wheatfield Primary School and a patient at the Children’s Hospital, managed to arrange the visit, thanks to Helen Haskell, Corporate and Events Fundraiser for Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal, Gromberry’s owner, One Scientific Limited of Avonmouth, and Butterfly’s owner Zachary Adams. Speaking prior to the fayre, John said: “Having spent so much time at the Children’s Hospital over the last eight years we do really appreciate all the care and support that we have received as a family. Being
part of this fund raising event is a small gesture to show our appreciation.” The Friends of Wheatfield Primary School report that they raised £3,248 at the fayre, including sponsorship of £350 from CJ Hole Estate Agents, from which they donated £325 to the Grand Appeal.

News in Brief Double gold for Lewis at regional karate contest A Bradley Stoke teenager has been asked to train with the UK national team after winning two gold medals at a regional karate tournament.
Lewis Harrison, 15, who trains at the Go-Kan-Ryu (GKR) club in Filton, won the 3rd kyu (brown belt and above) 15yrs+ medals in the Kumite and Kata disciplines at the GKR central region contest in Birmingham on 21st June. Sensei Mark Woods of GKR commented: “We are very proud of Lewis’s outstanding achievement and those of all the other regional competitors from our club and this is due to the hard work of both Lewis and his instructors and proud parents Derek and Jenny Harrison.”

Bridesmaid’s blushes, but now a blushing bride!
A
fter an embarrassing experience at a bridal shop when being forced into a smaller dress, Kirsty decided the time had come to lose weight. Having never been to a slimming group before, Kirsty felt anxious and nervous about joining and was unsure what to expect as she was worried that people may judge her as she only wanted to lose around a stone and a half. Pupils try out pedal power to get to secondary school
S
tarting secondary school can be a great opportunity for young people to travel independently to school and pupils in Bradley Stoke have been busy preparing for this by taking part in a series of guided ‘transition rides’. Pupils who have achieved their Bikeability level 2 were offered transition rides to help them build their skills in riding the route to their new secondary school ready for the start of term in September. As part of the ride they are shown where to secure their bike and helmet so there are no big surprises on the big day. On Monday 7th July, pupils from Meadowbrook Primary School took part in a ride to
Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS), while others from Wheatfield Primary School rode to BSCS and Patchway Community College later the same day. Pam Williams, road safety officer at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “The transition rides are aimed at encouraging students to think about how they can travel to their new school as well as showing them the benefits of cycling. The council’s Bikeability accredited instructors try out a couple of different routes to and from school with the students to help boost their skills ready for when the time comes to make that all important journey to their new secondary school.” Transition rides have been

Park it right! – Or be shamed on the internet
P
eople who park illegally or inconsiderately in Bradley Stoke could find photos of their vehicles posted in an online ‘hall of shame’ that has been set up by an anonymous group of concerned residents. The ‘Park It Right Bradley Stoke’ Facebook page, which posted its first photos on 16th July, mimics a similarly named page set up in Lowestoft, Suffolk, that was recently featured in the national press and attracted thousands of ‘likes’ within weeks of its launch. The website allows users to anonymously post images of poorly parked vehicles, in many cases with the registration number clearly visible, in an attempt to embarrass drivers into being more considerate. Photos posted on the Bradley Stoke site during its first week of operation show examples of vehicles parked on yellow lines and school zig-zag markings, while others are pictured obstructing pavements and dropped kerbs or hindering visibility on road bends. Locations where poor parking has been highlighted include
a bend , blocking a driveway, or blocking dropped curbs. Not just in Bradley Stoke, but also in surrounding areas.
What do you see as the main consequences of “bad parking”?
We are concerned about wheelchair users, the elderly, infirm, the blind, parents with pushchairs and children having to get on to the road in order to pass a car that has blocked the pavement. Snowberry Close, roads near Wheatfield, St Mary’s and Stoke Lodge schools, Cooks Close, Ormonds Close, the forecourt of the Tesco filling station and the car park of the Three Brooks pub. When The Journal contacted Park It Right Bradley Stoke to find out more about the site and the people behind it, we were told that they wished to remain anonymous but would be happy to answer our questions…

Within South Gloucestershire, enforcement of parking restrictions created by a Traffic Regulation Order (such as yellow lines and timed parking bays) is the responsibility of the council. The police are responsible for dealing with all other forms of highway and pavement obstruction, but can only act if they are contacted by someone who has personally been inconvenienced. The obstruction must also be witnessed in person by a police officer.

Highs and lows for ‘BS in Bloom’ team in July
J
uly has been a month of highs and lows for Bradley Stoke in Bloom (BSiB). We have added to last month’s spontaneous ‘guerrilla gardening’ at the flower bed by the Manor Farm Roundabout (Brook Way / Savages Wood Road). More bramble from the bed and overhanging the path was removed and three large bushes that were about to overshadow the front were moved to the side while other bushes and flowering plants were put in, including some lovely large daisies which were donated by two local residents, Vanessa and Sarah. Two of the group worked until dark to finish the task but it was worth it for all the compliments that were received.
Visit from RHS judge
A few days’ notice from the Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ judge that he would like to visit led to a flurry of activity! While we didn’t want to keep secret the problems we’ve had with theft and vandalism, we did want to show off our recent projects at their best. This almost worked, but by the time judge returned to the library meadow, we found that some of the posts had already been knocked down again. We chose to showcase the library meadow, the Manor Farm bed and our Community Herb Garden, with a quick look at the gardens behind the Brook Way Centre that we are reinstating.
We will not know the results until September, but the visit seemed to go well. Last year we were awarded 2 out of 5 (‘improving’), which was a fantastic result for a group that had only been running for a couple of months!
Community orchard
BSiB would like a Community Orchard, where anyone can ‘own’ a tree, maybe to celebrate the arrival of a new baby or to remember someone who is no longer with us. With this in mind, two of the group went on a fruit tree pruning workshop with local expert Graham White, who is also known as Mr Fruit. We discussed our plans with him and we hope that he will be able to complete for BSiB the site survey that will be required. Our regular workday (always the third Saturday of the month) was at the Brook Way gardens where Sarah, Andy D and Rob worked in the pouring rain for three hours, but as they were joined by the others, the thunder and lightning returned and we decided to finish for the day!!

The prize will be a trophy and a £10 voucher, also donated by Almondsbury Garden Centre. Entry forms can be found on our Facebook page & website or collected from the Town Council office.
Equipment lost in fire
It is a shame to end this month on a low note, but the arson attack on the storage container used by BSiB (see page 5) has completely destroyed all of our tools and equipment. Everything has been lost, including our new rotavator, the tea box and Flopsy our Easter Bunny who adorned the Aztec West planter so well this year. It is possible that, for the foreseeable future, we will have to suspend our workdays.

Around the schools by Judith Summers of Bradley Stoke Radio
S
ummer holidays at last, but for many it is the end of an era as they move on to a new chapter in their lives. In primary schools up and down the country the ‘Year 6 Leavers’ Play’ is now part of life, and our local schools are no exception. Stoke Lodge performed ‘Jack the Musical’, a variation on the traditional tale, but updated and set in Bradley Stoke and Patchway. The audience were entertained by some great singing and dreadful jokes, although very well delivered, as Morag the cow was sold at the car boot sale and Giant ‘Amburger played by Lloyd Garratt and Callum Shorland got his comeuppance. The chickens, Megan Wong and Christina Engley were hysterical, a fine performance all round. Comedy was also on the bill at Holy Trinity with a tale of mystery as Jack Spratt, private investigator, Sophie Reynolds, tried to solve crimes committed in Happy Valley. Father Bear, Conner Watts, however was not as he seemed and was plotting to destroy the valley and turn it into a porridge factory. All was discovered by Baby Bear, Joann, who sang beautifully with Goldilocks played by Zoe Okoye. A fantastic performance of Oliver was Wheatfield’s offering and a stirring chorus was held together by some stunning
individual performances. Jed Ward as Dodger worked well with Fagin, Tyler Dunnell-Luff. Oliver was played by Katie Rawlings and Lilya Mimoun sang the flower seller’s song. A special mention must go to Joe Pocock who was really scary as Bill Sykes and to Olivia Scaife whose performance of Nancy brought me to tears. Finally, St Chad’s performed Next Big Step, looking back on primary school. It was very funny, superbly performed and I would love to know who Daisy Day Clements studied for her role as headteacher! The scene with opposing football teams’ parents should be played on touchlines everywhere! The final song, ‘Looking Forward but Never Forgetting Where They Came From’, made the audience cry, which after all is what leavers’ plays are all about. Have a great holiday everyone and enjoy the next step in your life in September. The Bradley Stoke Radio Schools Show covers all schools in the local area and beyond. We play children’s music and have children reading their poems, topic work and stories - in fact anything they feel they want to share. Schools News Holy Trinity pupils serve up ‘Porridge’
By Jane Johns, headteacher ear 6 and other pupils from Key Stage 2 at Holy Trinity Primary School put on an excellent and highly comical production of ‘Porridge’ on 16th and 17th July. Lurking behind the idyllic landscape of Happy Valley lies a dark secret. Jack Spratt, private detective and all round know-itall, is puzzled by a crime wave. Who has stolen Marigold the cow, supplier of top grade milk to ‘The Porridge Pot’? What happened to Mother Hubbard’s recipe book which has been missing for years? Also on the quest for answers are a group of five incompetent police officers, (ig)nobly led by The Chief of Police, who manage to bungle every investigation they undertake. On the surface, Papa Bear runs a highly successful Porridge Diner, The Porridge Pot, but unbeknown to his family and customers he is the crime baron and mastermind of all the crimes that happen in Happy Valley.

Assisted in his evil doings by the Three Billy Goats, he calls himself the ‘Goatfather’ and together they cowknap Marigold, holding her to ransom for £2000. Even more shocking, it is revealed that he stole Mother Hubbard’s recipe for porridge years before and has used it to build up his soon-to-beglobal chain of Porridge diners. Add to the mix a collection of well known Nursery Rhyme characters and a major muddle up with suitcases and it made for an evening of puns and panto style fun. The children really entered into the spirit of it all and delighted friends and family with their spirited acting and excellent singing. Good prevails in the end as, with the help of Goldilocks, Jack Spratt solves the crime and Papa Bear is banged to rights at Her Majesty’s Pleasure All of the pupils put in excellent performances and deserve credit for learning lots of dialogue, some catchy songs and playing the character parts so well.

The Forensics team have once again been on site and again found no fingerprints. Nothing was seen on CCTV, as this area is not covered on the grounds, however following these incidents BSTC officers are looking into costs to install security measures in this area. Issued on Wed 23rd July etween the hours of 11.30pm Sunday 20th July and 6am Monday 21st July, Bradley Stoke Town Council (BSTC) had an attempted break-in and criminal damage on the three shipping containers at Baileys Court Activity Centre. The police were duly called and the forensic team were on site the following day. No fingerprints were found. Nothing was taken from the containers, but it left damage to the doors and hinges, BSTC staff made safe and secured the containers on Monday. At approximately 3.08am on Tuesday morning (22nd July), the Fire Service and Police were called to the site as the middle container had been set on fire. The fire was completely contained within the middle container, but unfortunately there was heat and

Over 600 species found in Three Brooks BioBlitz By Sara Messenger of the Three Brooks Nature Conservation Group ur 30-hour BioBlitz marathon started on the morning of Friday 4th July with 200 schoolchildren from local primary schools (Stoke Lodge, Holy Family, Wheatfield and Holy Trinity) joining expert naturalists, scientists and volunteers in a real life scientific survey of the wildlife of the Three Brooks Nature Reserve. Most members of the conservation group were able to take a day off work so that they could take part in guiding others around the reserve, helping with the schools/ children’s activities, surveying and reporting. In the evening, there were many opportunities for the adults to join in too, with bug hunting, evening wildlife walk, bat walk (a roost of 30 – 40 noctules was found) and moth trapping (which caught over

140 different species of moth). On the Saturday, the dawn chorus may have been cancelled (although an intrepid five people braved the damp anyway), but there was still plenty to see and do. At the lake base camp as well as a ‘mobile laboratory’ identifying specimens, there were several manned displays and, organized and run by Gill and Freya Smith, some very popular children’s craft activities, including paper swans, bug houses and tic-tac-toe game making. Throughout the day there were more walks and talks including ‘tremendous trees’, ‘spot the ladybird’, bug hunting, nature detectives, mammal tracks and signs, butterfly walks and looking for lichens. Bradley Stoke Library, as well as setting up an amazing BioBlitz display and running a specially themed story telling session, was temporary home

to a host of data recorders who were counting and logging the species records, not an easy task when the systems seemed to feel a need for frequent long pauses. All of the species found were documented as biological records and are now being entered into local databases where they will be verified and stored for posterity. This snapshot of the wildlife found will be used to influence the management and conservation work that takes place on the site. There were a few unexpected surprises over the weekend; as well as finding a new bat roost, two new species of bat were heard and evidence of little owls was found – and how normal it became to hear: “Ooh that’s interesting poo, can I take a look?” During the Saturday, over 300 people visited the base camp, including Martin Davis, author of The Farmer and the Goose with the Golden Eyes’ – a book that describes how the reserve was formed from his father’s
farmland and MP Jack Lopresti. At 5pm, the Chair of South Gloucestershire Council, Cllr Howard Gawler, came along to congratulate the volunteers and announce the final species count, which was an amazing 617 species. News Councillors inspect MetroBus route
M
embers of South Gloucestershire Council’s two Development Control Sites Inspection Sub-Committees visited Bradley Stoke on 22nd July to see ‘first hand’ the route of the proposed £102m North Fringe to Hengrove Package (NFHP) MetroBus scheme. The plans, if approved, would see a number of sections of new bus lane constructed along Bradley Stoke Way, including a long stretch running from the end of the existing bus lane adjacent to the Willow Brook Centre up to Patchway Brook Roundabout (near Aldi). There would also be major changes on the approach to the Aztec West Roundabout and reconfiguration of the Woodlands Lane junction. A decision on the planning
application is expected to be made in September and a public inquiry into the Compulsory Purchase Order for land required for the Stoke Gifford By-Pass is scheduled for October. Subject to final approval by the Department for Transport, construction is planned to start “early next year”. An indicative construction timeline submitted with the planning application suggests that construction work on Bradley Stoke Way could start in April 2015 and last for 30 months.

Letters and Opinions Council out of line on mobile food traders What are we to do when Bradley Stoke Town Council (BSTC) completely floats all advice and guidelines given by government by insisting two out of three of their activity centres allow even one mobile food unit to trade in the first instance? For obvious reasons, government guidelines for mobile fast food vendors are that they avoid being within 400 metres of schools, parks, play areas or in general any amenity for young people. Brook Way Activity Centre, for example, has a vendor a stone’s throw from a toddlers’ play area, a scout group, a recreational area and skate park, not to mention Bradley Stoke doctors’ surgery, the ethics there beyond doubt are questionable. Similar facilities are mirrored at Baileys Court Activity Centre. I wonder, does BSTC think they
wield more power and know better than the government? Perhaps they are following Napoleon Bonaparte’s lead: “An army marches on its stomach”! Have they forgotten they work for us and will they please make their minds up regarding policies! Back in 2002, BSTC initially objected at a planning meeting to allow one van at Brook Way Activity Centre for reasons of safety for the public using the car park, possible breach of their lease with SGC and reduction of car spaces; no surprises there! Obviously those committee members back then had greater insight than those we have now. Bradley Stoke already accommodates more than sufficient food outlets. Surely we should look at the NHS costs for treating child obesity in comparison to the insignificant financial gain for BSTC. Chiropractor, Rebecca Rees, takes you ‘back’ to school to teach you some basics about looking after your back. What is your back made up of? Your spine stretches all the way from your skull down to your coccyx and is made up of small bones, called vertebrae, which are stacked on top of each other. Between each of the vertebrae are the intervertebral discs, which are the shockabsorbing part of the spine. Think of them like jam donuts because they have a stronger outer area with a jelly-like core. How do you hurt your back? There are two main causes of back pain that we commonly see as Chiropractors. The first is a facet injury, which is where the joints between the vertebrae are injured. The second is a disc injury, which is where the disc can bulge out of its normal position or even rupture, causing the jelly-like core to squeeze out – just like the jam in a donut! In these cases, the nerves in the back can be affected causing pain down the leg, called sciatica. How do we injure our backs? Probably the most common way to injure our backs is by

repetitive bad posture. People often complain they didn’t do anything to hurt their backs – ‘it just went’. However, in reality, the problem has built up over a long period of time. radley Stoke Wise Owls Club has raised £100 for a local hospital charity by selling hand-made items at local festivals and fêtes. The children made loom band bracelets, cakes and badges, which were sold at the Bradley Stoke Community Festival in June and at the Wheatfield and Meadowbrook school summer fairs in July. So what do we do and when do we decide it is time to seek help? First of all one needs to look at what they are doing, activity wise too much or too little, what they are eating again too much or too little, what they are drinking alcohol wise, how many hours a week are they working, what stresses have recently affected them. A balance in all things is important; if the balance is lost, the body and mind get tired. Self examination for lumps or bumps in breasts and testicles is useful, looking for unexplained weight loss or gain is also important. Considering how much rest one gets at night is useful and trying to improve the sleep quality. Look at what medications you may be taking both prescribed and over the counter. Ask your partner or a friend or family member how they think you have been recently and believe them if they comment on recent
check your medications and dosages, listen to reports from other family members, examine you for specific symptoms then possibly arrange for screening tests on blood, urine and other areas as appropriate, assess the results of the tests and on the balance of likelihood give you the reason for your fatigue, then treat any abnormality or deficiency, see how you respond then probably go home and tell their partner how exhausted they are. Always consider what you may be doing that may cause your symptoms, address the issues, but if in doubt or having problems seek some further help. Keep enjoying our lovely summer sensibly and remember sometimes when you feel tired, even after a hard day’s work, if you participate in some exercise you will feel more energetic and enthusiastic. News Bradley Stoke’s Willow Brook shopping centre wins another top industry award
T
he team at the Willow Brook shopping centre in Bradley Stoke is celebrating winning a top industry award for the second year in a row. Centre Manager Andy Wynn and Facilities Manager Mark Wathern picked up the trophy for Energy Management Award of the Year at the annual SCEPTRE Awards at the Dorchester in London on 24th June. Last year, Willow Brook won the Waste Management Award. The awards scheme recognises the leading practice and the best people in the shopping centre industry, putting the spotlight on management teams, retailers and suppliers that demonstrate real excellence. Judged by a panel of industry experts, the Willow Brook Centre won the accolade thanks to its excellent reduction in energy use
over the past year. After years of modest improvements, the 230,000 sqft retail, leisure and office scheme in Bradley Stoke made 2013 the year for a step change in energy efficiency. In just one year, the Willow Brook Centre all but eliminated its use of gas and cut its electricity consumption by 21 per cent. The resulting gains saw the centre slash its carbon output by 80 tonnes (tCO2) and save tens of thousands of pounds in energy bills. Manager Andy Wynn, who joined the team last year, said: “This is testament to all the hard work our team has put in to make the Willow Brook Centre as energy efficient as we can.” “Willow Brook sits at the very heart of the community in Bradley Stoke and we’re sure our shoppers will be just as proud of this achievement as we are.”

News The wheel turns at local Rotary Club
J
uly marks the start of the Rotary year across the world and on 1st July the local Rotary Club of Bristol Aztec held a handover dinner to mark the occasion. Outgoing President Paul Holley handed his chain of office, together with his best wishes for the coming year, to incoming President Roger Worth. Paul reviewed his twelve months of office and looked back at some of the events which included providing international help to projects in India, Nepal and South Africa and, closer to home, the very successful Swimathon, Young Chef, Music Rules, sponsorship of a candidate to attend Rotary Young Leader scheme, Bradley Stoke Festival, Bradley Stoke Fireworks and not forgetting supporting the Knutty Knitters with the Christmas Knitivity display at Asda in Patchway. We also took the opportunity to further the established twinning relationship
between Bradley Stoke and Champs-sur-Marne by visiting our sister Rotary club of Marnela-Vallée, a visit that happily coincided with the weekend of the France v England rugby international in Paris! Whilst having fun and fellowship, we met our main objective of putting something back into the community, raising in excess of £10,000 for charitable causes during the year. We send our thanks to the many individual speakers who attended our meetings over the year and gave us an insight into what they were doing, these ranged from the Bloodhound Land Speed world record attempt to the rat department of South Gloucestershire Council! The club, now under the presidency of Roger for the coming year, has an exciting range of activities planned to continue our aim of “making a difference”. We meet at Bristol

ast month, I attended Meadowbrook Primary School’s summer fair. As usual, the fair was well supported, had some amazing stalls and saw a great turn out! Bradley Stoke Radio (BSR) provided PA and music and, part way through the day, the police arrived, allowing children to sit in the car, switch on the sirens and have a look around. Stands were set up with various games, and all the proceeds went toward school funds. I have helped BSR at Meadowbrook fairs for a number of years, and there is always such a lovely atmosphere – a great event and definitely one to put in your calendar!

Grass fire blankets Little Stoke & Bradley Stoke with smoke A blanket of smoke drifting over Little Stoke and Bradley Stoke on the afternoon of 16th July caused concern amongst local residents, with some speculating on social media channels that the Little Stoke tip or even a local hotel was on fire.
