As I write this, I am asking myself: Is it really only four weeks since our last edition?

So much seems to have happened in Bradley Stoke over the last month: A herd of runaway cows caused mayhem in our residential streets, making the national headlines; local people have raised thousands of pounds for charitable causes; plans have been submitted for a new primary school in the town; and we have a new Mayor!

We’re pleased to welcome sixteen new advertisers to our magazine this month and, thanks to their support, we have been able to print more pages, allowing us to make sure you don’t miss out on any local news.

Next weekend (6th-8th June) sees Bradley Stoke’s ever-popular Community Festival taking place at various venues around the town. You’ll find the full programme of events on the centre pages of this magazine.

The schedule for Saturday’s community fair looks more packed than ever and a record field of around 600 runners is expected for the Sole Sisters’ 10k race on Sunday morning.

A new event on Sunday is an all-day competition for scooter, BMX, skateboard and inline skate disciplines at the leisure centre (details on page 23).

We’ll have full reports from all the events in our July magazine.

New waste collection days from 2nd June

H

ouseholds in Bradley Stoke are being urged to get set for new waste collection days being introduced from Monday 2nd June.

Calendar ‘hangers’ with details of the new dates were placed on black bins emptied between 12th and 23rd May, says South Gloucestershire Council.

The changes will see a new fortnightly schedule introduced for all households, with black and green bins collected in one week and the green recycling box collected in the other.

Plastics and cardboard will also be collected on alternate weeks, while food waste will continue to be collected weekly.

All waste and recycling will need to be put out by 7am to ensure collection.

The changes are the first revisions to the district’s waste collection dates since 2010 and will help to accommodate

the new recycling services — including mixed plastics, Tetrapak cartons and small electrical items – which were introduced on 31st March.

Any residents who have not received a bin hanger should contact the council on streetcare@southglos.gov.uk or by telephoning 01454 868 000.

With news of the changes coming just two months after the council introduced an opt-in £36 p.a. charge for emptying the green bin, local Conservative councillors have questioned the wisdom of the move. Cllr Ian Adams (Siston and Warmley), Conservative Lead on the authority’s Communities Committee, said: “This announcement will come as real shock to South Gloucestershire households.”

“When so many residents have seen their green bins go uncollected despite paying the council’s controversial ‘bin tax’,

people will understandably have major concerns over the ability of both the council, and its waste contractor Sita, to manage such a massive change in the waste collection service.”

“There’s a real fear that changing collection dates so suddenly will lead to yet more bin chaos.”

Speaking at the end of April after a number of residents in Silver Birch Close, Little Stoke had complained of missed green bin collections, despite subscribing in good time for the start of the new service, Stoke Gifford Councillor Keith Cranney (Conservative) said: “It’s utterly unacceptable that, despite forking out for this punitive bin tax, residents have not had their green bin waste collected on either of the last two collection cycles as scheduled. It beggars belief that the council seems to be making it as difficult as possible for households to do the right

thing and recycle their waste.

This new ‘service’ is a complete shambles and households paying the bin tax are being ripped off.”

Meadowbrook teacher honoured National award for excellence presented on Thank a Teacher Day

A

teacher at Bradley Stoke’s Meadowbrook Primary School has been honoured with a prestigious national award that recognises his innovative use of technology in the classroom.

Governors, staff and pupils gathered in the school hall on ‘Thank a Teacher Day’, Friday 16th May, to witness Matt Smith being presented a silver Pearson Teaching Award, one of only 55 conferred this year across the whole of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Pearson Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers and teaching, founded in 1999 by Lord Puttnam, they recognize the life-changing impact of inspirational teachers on the lives of the young people they teach.

Mr Smith was one of just six silver award winners in the

Outstanding use of Technology in Education category. He will now join his fellow silver award winners at the UK final of the Teaching Awards at London’s Guildhall on 26th October, where ten of them will be selected to receive a gold award.

Before that, he will attend a winners’ gala at the Houses of Parliament in June.

Mr Smith’s fiancé and staff at the school had colluded to keep news of the award secret until he walked into the packed school hall, where he was greeted

by Meadowbrook headteacher Jon Barr and presented with his trophy by Dave Baker, executive head of the Olympus Academy Trust, and Cllr Brian Hopkinson, Mayor of Bradley Stoke.

Headteacher Jon Barr commented: “Matt has led the school on a learning journey with technology and the results we are now seeing in school are showing us the impact of that leadership.

Councillors support call for ‘pay parking’ in central Bradley Stoke

B

radley Stoke Town Council has agreed to investigate an option for providing ‘pay car parking’ in the centre of Bradley Stoke after being approached by residents of the Brook Court later living apartment complex, where there is an acknowledged shortage of parking spaces.

Roger Grimshaw, secretary of the residents’ association at Brook Court, originally approached the town council back in January, pointing out that there are only 18 spaces available for the 50 apartments at the Savages Wood site.

Concerns about inadequate parking at the development were raised by town councillors and local residents at the planning application stage, but these were dismissed by McCarthy & Stone (the developers) and South Gloucestershire Council who claimed that the close proximity of local services and the elderly nature of the residents would result in a low level of car ownership.

But with 16 residents said to be on a waiting list for reserved parking spaces at Brook Court, McCarthy & Stone has now admitted underestimating demand, saying it had “bucked the trend” for its developments

across the country. In a letter to the town council, the company said it was “disappointed with the outcome at Brook Court” and, as a consequence, has enhanced the number of parking spaces being provided at two newer schemes in Yate and Chipping Sodbury.

Although a number of residents of Brook Court are currently receiving financial assistance to rent spaces in the car park of the nearby Three Brooks public house, this help is expected to be withdrawn next summer.

Speaking at the May meeting of the town council’s Planning Committee, Mr Grimshaw once again asked if the council could in any way support the concept of ‘pay parking’ in Bradley Stoke and asked if the vacant piece of land opposite the Tesco filling station might be used for this purpose.

Councillors noted that this parcel of land is in the ownership of South Gloucestershire Council and has now been earmarked for housing after plans to construct a health centre on the site were abandoned by the NHS some years ago. However, the situation is complicated by the fact that access to the site would have to be from Hornbeam Close rather than from the entrance road into the Willow Brook Centre.

It was, however, pointed out that residents of Hornbeam Close might also welcome the provision of additional parking, as they also suffer from an underprovision of reserved spaces.

Mr Grimshaw urged councillors to support his proposal, saying it could generate a useful revenue stream for SGC while a housing developer was being sought for the vacant site.

He added that he expected McCarthy & Stone to “put their hands in their pocket” to help implement his idea.

The committee unanimously agreed to write to SGC, asking them to “consider using the site constructively, as car parking provision for Brook Court and other residents of Bradley Stoke, even if it is only as a temporary measure”.

Letters and Opinions SGC consents to take back unused green bin South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) have made it known that they will not be collecting green bins until after October, no doubt hoping that frustrated gardeners will “give in” over the course of the summer and pay up.

I have no intention of paying this extra charge since it sets a dangerous precedent for the withdrawal of other services unless we pay for them.

I wrote to SGC pointing out that, although the green bin is their property, my house is my property and I do not consent to accommodate their property on my property free of charge until the end of October. I made it clear that unless they contacted me to arrange a mutually convenient date and time to remove their property from my property, a weekly rental would come into force in two weeks

time. I posted this letter by special delivery to prevent them denying receipt.

Within days, the council called me to say that they had taken legal advice and were prepared to remove their green bin from my property at a time convenient to me.

If enough people follow my example, SGC may well end up wishing that they had left the green bin collection in place. If nothing else, it may teach them that we council taxpayers can bite back.

minute that the council was perfect before, because it wasn’t, but now, almost weekly, we see outrageous decisions, comments and posturing come from our current councillor collective: • Trying to gift taxpayer’s land without consultation • Opening up all council car parks to multiple mobile food traders against residents’ feelings • Talking up gated access, parking tickets & attendants along with double yellow lines & tow-away schemes in the car park at the Brook Way doctors’ surgery – to just name a few.

Councillors from the same party voted to have multiple mobile food traders on each of the council’s car parks only to vote against it at a later meeting before the scheme could even be fully introduced. The current mayor who dreamed up the concept has now publicly announced he will vote to undo the policy.

Now we could all focus on individuals or particular issues but, in the round, it just serves to demonstrate a real lack of direction, understanding, lack of public representation and fundamental mismanagement.

I must stress, I am in no way criticising the council’s staff who all continue to carry out exemplary work, sometimes against the odds and with a fractured management structure

as its operational back drop.

Councillors who don’t read their agendas and supporting information and have no basic knowledge of the town and the council need to now serve out their last year in office and refrain from standing again. It takes nothing to read up before meetings or ask questions and find out those basics. In my opinion by acting in this manner you are doing a serious disservice to those you are supposed to represent.

I question why a number of individuals even decided to stand as local councillors given that they act for reasons very different than to represent, listen and act on behalf of residents.

My comments are not designed to merely serve as a negative critique of the incumbents, but as a positive look to the future. Call it a ‘call to arms’ to support my party if you like, but I also plea for independent candidates and others from different political persuasions to put themselves forward and help to break up the abomination currently in office, putting the representation of people and care back into the council.

I look forward to next year’s general election where hopefully this typical picture of local politics is undone.

Elderly woman dies after discovering home had been burgled

A

n elderly woman has died after discovering that her home in Bradley Stoke had been burgled.

Police say they were called at 12.39pm on Thursday 22nd May to a report of a burglary at a house in Oaktree Crescent.

The householders were away and the call was made by a relative who checked on the property and found the door had been forced. Cash and jewellery had been stolen.

After the householders returned that afternoon, the lady, who was in her 70s, became ill and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Sadly, she died overnight.

Detective Inspector Jill Kells said: “Our thoughts are with the family at this very difficult

time, and we have appointed a specially-trained officer to support them as we carry out our investigation. We have arrested three men in connection with our enquiries into this burglary and another burglary in Hambrook Lane, Stoke Gifford, that same afternoon. However, I would appeal for anyone with any information which could help this investigation to contact us by calling 101 quoting reference 51255/14.”

In relation to the Stoke Gifford incident on the same afternoon, police say they were called just before 3.45pm to a report of a burglary in progress at a house in Hambrook Lane, with three men spotted at the scene.

A spokesperson for the company explained: “The work we carried out in May was to replace a large valve which was not shutting completely and was allowing some water to pass. The job went to plan and the valve was successfully replaced.”

Runaway cows hit national headlines

A

dramatic incident which saw a herd of cows escape from an overturned trailer and run loose through the streets of Bradley Stoke for over two hours, hit the national headlines over the May bank holiday weekend.

The drama started when a trailer transporting the cattle overturned at ‘Rabbit Roundabout’ (junction of Bradley Stoke Way and Winterbourne Road) at around 12.15pm on Friday 2nd May. Eight animals escaped and began galloping up and down various roads in Bradley Stoke, including Winterbourne Road, Bradley Stoke Way, Webbs Wood Road and Juniper Way. Several police vehicles were involved in the operation to round up the beasts and the police helicopter was deployed to give an oversight from the air.

A police spokesperson confirmed: “There was an accident involving a trailer on Friday lunch time which led to a number of cows escaping.

Officers attended the scene to try and round up the cows.”

“One of the officers was injured after a cow ran into him and he was taken to Frenchay Hospital.

He suffered bruising but escaped more serious injury because he had his body armour on.”

The spokesperson confirmed that one of the animals was shot by a firearms officer, at the request of the farmer who owned the herd, after it became ‘distressed’ and the farmer believed it wouldn’t survive.

News in Brief Community Singers to stage concert on 15th July Dawn Clode writes: The Bradley Stoke Community Singers are proud to announce that they will be performing their second concert on Tuesday 15th July at Bradley Stoke Community School, Fiddlers Wood Lane.

This year, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of WW1, we will be singing songs from every decade since the war started to the present day.

We are also going to be joined by children from local primary schools to sing some of the songs.

Slimmers throw themselves into fundraising

S

limmers have joined together to spring-clean their wardrobes and donate their clothes to Cancer Research UK in support of the national fundraising campaign ‘The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw’.

Members of the North Bristol Slimming World groups collected all their unwanted clothes, shoes and accessories to donate to their local Cancer Research UK shop to support the campaign which ran from 5th May for two weeks.

Each single bag collected could raise around £25 for the charity.

The campaign is a nationwide fundraising drive that sees Slimming World members across the UK donating clothes to Cancer Research UK, Slimming World’s charity partner in 2014.

Last year, slimmers donated £888,586 worth of stock across the UK. All profits go to support the charity’s life-saving work to help beat cancer sooner.

Kelly Watts, who manages the North Bristol team of local Slimming World consultants, says members were more than willing to donate their unwanted clothes to help such a worthwhile cause. “Members of our Slimming World groups have really embraced this fabulous fundraising campaign and they have been more than happy to donate their ‘big’ clothes because they know that they’re never going to need them again!”

“We held a coffee morning at Christ The King Church in Bradley Stoke and invited members from all of our groups to bring along their unwanted clothes. We collected over 250 bags on the day and have collected a further 40 bags in groups after the event. We also sold raffle tickets on the day for prizes donated by local companies and raised £150 cash too. I’m very proud!”

Plans submitted for primary school at BSCS

A

formal planning application has been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council for the erection of a new primary school within the grounds of Bradley Stoke Community School.

As previously reported in The Journal, the new ‘primary phase’ building will be located on an area of land that is currently used as a secondary car park, located between the school’s ‘AstroTurf’ all-weather sports pitch and the site boundary closest to Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre.

It is intended to relocate the secondary car park, which currently provides 43 spaces, to the other side of the secondary school building, on currently unused land between the rear gardens of properties in Champs Sur Marne and an all-weather sports pitch. Cycle storage ‘pods’ providing parking for around 370 bikes will also be moved.

The relocation will provide a net increase of 16 car parking spaces, of which 12 are deemed necessary for the maximum 36 staff anticipated to be on-site at the new primary facility at any one time.

Plans submitted with the application show a building providing seven classrooms, a library/resource area, a main hall and a kitchen. The principal access will be from the roundabout on Fiddlers Wood Lane via the existing access road that leads to the secondary car park.

A secondary pedestrian-only access point is proposed, located close to the point where the footpath into the nature reserve joins Fiddlers Wood Lane. This would be in the form of a lockable gate that is only open at the start and end of the school day.

Leisure Centre, with a view to formalising an arrangement whereby parents of primary age children would be permitted to drop-off and pick-up children in the leisure centre car park, from where they could easily access the school via the proposed new pedestrian entrance.

The primary facility would have a single form entry with up to 210 pupils on roll when fully occupied. It is hoped to receive

the first intake of reception aged children in September 2015.

It is proposed that the start and end times of the primary age school day (e.g. 9am & 3pm) would be staggered from those of the secondary age students.

The consultation period for the school building planning application runs until 2nd June.

A separate planning application was made in April for the car park relocation.

Staff, clergy and children blow out candles on a “birthday cake” during a service held to celebrate Holy Trinity Primary School’s 20th birthday.

A

busy month for schools saw all Year 6 children complete their Standard Assessments and head teachers all over Bradley Stoke were proud of the way the children rose to the challenge and showed off their skills.

Friday 16th May was an exceptional day to remember for Meadowbrook Primary School teacher, Matt Smith, who found out that he had been awarded a Silver Pearson Teaching Award in the outstanding use of technology category, one of only 55 awards in the country.

Mr Smith looked stunned as he entered the school hall to cheers from children, staff, governors and dignitaries.

He was presented with the award by Dave Baker, Executive Head of the Olympus Academy Trust and Mayor of Bradley Stoke Cllr. Brian Hopkinson, and thanked staff and pupils for their enthusiasm in embracing the use of iPads to aid their learning.

Mr Smith will attend a winners’ gala at The Houses of Parliament in June and will also attend an event at the London Guild Hall in October, where he will find out if he has won a gold award.

Holy Trinity Primary School celebrated its 20th birthday this month and head teacher Jane Johns, who has worked at the school since it opened in 1994, and her staff organised a hectic week of

celebrations.

Children wore pyjamas to school and enjoyed a film night watching The Lion King, released in 1994, while eating popcorn and pizza. A treasure hunt, environment day, “celebrate the 90’s” day and whole school game of hide and seek were also enjoyed.

Wednesday was dedicated to raising money for CLIC Sargent, a charity that supports children with cancer and their families.

Staff and children donned wigs and hats and walked to The Willow Brook Centre, collecting funds for this worthy cause.

Friday saw a celebration service attended by the Bishop of Bristol followed by a birthday party with cake and an evening barbecue.

Students and staff at Bradley Stoke Community School supported two teachers, Mr Anthony and Mr Sharp, who cycled to Barnstaple and back in under 24 hours, raising money for Transplant Sport – in memory of former pupil Sarah Port, who died last year.

The Bradley Stoke Radio Schools Show covers all schools in the local area and beyond. We play children’s music and have children reading their poems, topic work and stories - in fact anything they feel they want to share. It is aired on Monday evenings during term time, between 6pm and 7pm.

Hilton team brightens up children’s playground

T

he Hilton Bristol hotel team recently spent three days cleaning-up, preparing and painting the children’s playground in Paddock Close, Bradley Stoke. This children’s playground was last refurbished seven years ago and recently had new soft-padded carpet installed around the play equipment by the town council.

In partnership with the council, the Hilton Bristol purchased special paint and equipment to rejuvenate the area, including two swings, a rocking horse and the children’s climbing frame and slide, as well as volunteering their time to help the local community of Bradley Stoke.

This initiative is part of Hilton’s global community relations program, Bright Blue Futures, which helps young people achieve stability through the delivery of basic needs within the local community

– giving them a brighter future in education, life skills development, workforce training and employment.

John Lewis marks 150 years of trading

T

he John Lewis store at Cribbs Causeway has begun a programme of events to mark the retailer’s 150th anniversary and Journal editor Stephen Horton was delighted to be invited to meet a number of Bradley Stoke residents who work at the store and hear more about the special events that are planned for the coming months.

John Lewis, regularly voted the UK’s favourite retailer, began trading in 1864 with the opening of its first shop in London’s Oxford Street. Since then, and through the efforts of its 30,000 Partners (staff), it has succeeded in becoming the largest omnichannel retailer in the UK, with 40 John Lewis shops (30 department stores and ten John Lewis at home) and a growing

online business, johnlewis.com.

John Lewis is part of the John Lewis Partnership where all employees are co-owners named ‘Partners’, each with a shared responsibility for the company and a drive to put its success first. It is the largest example of worker co-ownership in the UK and, each year, profits are shared with Partners in the form of an annual bonus.

Nichola’s daughter, Danielle Beard (now living in Patchway), also works in the store, having joined the company nine years ago. Starting in the children’s shoes department, she has since worked in service & payment, decorative accessories, gifts, maternity and pictures.

Mayor hands over charity cheques

T

development facilitator Andrew McLaren, who lives in north Bradley Stoke, joined the company as a retail graduate and was head of various departments before taking on his current role, in which he is responsible for training Partners in stores across an area that stretches from Cardiff to High Wycombe.

He also gets involved with recruitment onto the John Lewis retail apprentice scheme, which he has promised to tell us more about in a later article.

Andrew said being a co-owner of the business makes Partners “think differently”, to which Nichola added: “You really do care about everything that is going on”.

As well as the annual bonus, Partners are entitled to generous discounts on John Lewis and Waitrose purchases. They also receive leisure benefits and are entitled to a learning bursary of up to £250 p.a. towards the cost of any non-work related course.

John Lewis also operates a community involvement programme, which sees Partners working with organisations and community groups in areas local to its stores. Projects carried out in Bradley Stoke in recent years have included the planting of orchards at Meadowbrook Primary School and Bradley Stoke Community School (in cooperation with the Forest of Avon trust) and the construction of vegetable beds at Wheatfield Primary School.

It was clear from speaking to the Partners that they really appreciate the career opportunities available to them within John Lewis and are incredibly proud of being part of a unique tradition within the British retail industry.

he Annual General Meeting of Bradley Stoke Town Council on 21st May saw outgoing Mayor Brian Hopkinson present cheques to his three chosen ‘charities of the year’: Friends of Jubilee Green, Whizz Kidz and Heartful Dodgers The money handed to the groups derives from fundraising events organised by the town council over the past 12 months, principally the community festival in June and the firework display in November.

Before performing his final duty in office, Cllr Hopkinson reflected on his time in office, saying he thought the year had gone “very well” and it had been a “great privilege” to serve the community of Bradley Stoke.

In a lengthy speech, he reminded councillors of the inaugural Bradley Stoke Carnival, which he said had been an “extravaganza of colour sweeping through the cul-de-sacs” and the first-ever Festival Bed Race, both events having been instigated at his suggestion.

He also mentioned his proposal to hand over the Brook Way hard court area to a local charity and a yet-to-be-formed youth trust, which failed to gain the support of councillors last year, and he voiced support for a new idea submitted through the subsequent public consultation – that the land to be used to construct a theatre and media centre.

Councillors then voted to unanimously appoint Cllr John Ashe as the next Mayor and Cllr Roger Avenin as his deputy.

Bradley Stoke Community Festival Preview Friday 6th June from 10.30am The Picnic in the Park, for parents and toddlers, starts at 10.30am and runs until approximately 2pm – at the Jubilee Centre. Professor Panic presents his range of circus skills, juggling and entertainment in the Big Top, alongside local craft and community stalls and a bouncy castle. Refreshments will be served by the local WI during the morning with face painting available for the toddlers. Friends of Jubilee Green will also be running their popular treasure hunt and there will be activities from the local Woodcraft folk and play groups.

Saturday 7th June 11.30am to 6pm The demonstration area in Jubilee Green features a wide range of events, including the popular falconry displays. King Ramps Skate Pipe will be in attendance, with displays being given by pro-riders throughout the Festival (sponsored by the Willow Brook Centre and SGC Positive Activities Fund). There will be a rugby skills display plus a tug o’ war competition organised by Bradley Stoke Youth Rugby at St Mary’s Rugby Club. On the main stage area music is provided by local bands: Fflipp Fflops, Uncle Buck, Goodnight Lois, The Band with No Name, top party band She Says and reggae band Mizizi; performing alongside local dance groups, including the world-renowned Bristol Acro Gymnasts, clubs and associations. Fun rides for the children include trampolines, giant slides, football games, longbow archery, giant inflatables, a helter skelter and the Vertical Xtreme climbing wall. Sideshows, arts & crafts and community stalls will offer a wide range of local products and novelties. The Bradley Stoke Youth FC Football Tournament for Year 1 children starts at 12.30am on the top soccer pitches.

Sunday 8th June from 9.30am A 10K multi-terrain race organised by the Sole Sisters starts at 9.30am from the Jubilee Centre (600 competitors are expected). At Baileys Court Activity Centre, the second running of the Bradley Stoke Bed Race will take place from 12.30pm to 1.15pm. The Bradley Stoke Cricket Club will provide a BBQ + bar from 12 noon with a Mayor’s XI v BSCC XI starting at 2pm, finishing with evening entertainment in the clubhouse. The Bradley Stoke Bowls club will provide roll up demonstrations throughout the afternoon. A Skate Park Competition (sponsored by the Willow Brook Centre and SGC Positive Activities Fund) will take place from 11am to 5pm at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre (see page 23 for details on how to enter).

Two teachers at Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS) have successfully completed a marathon 24-hour 230-mile cycling challenge to raise funds for a charity that promotes organ donation and posttransplant activities.

Community Festival skate event organised by local young people

Y

oung people from the Bradley Stoke area are actively planning and organising a two day skate event during the Festival weekend of the 7th and 8th June.

On the Saturday there will be a 5 foot high half pipe on the main festival site at Jubilee Green and on the Sunday the half pipe will move to the existing Skate Park site at the Leisure Centre to create additional space for an all day competition for Scooter, BMX, Skateboard and Inline skate disciplines.

Young people have set up a ‘Bradley Stoke Skate Park’ Facebook page to promote the two day event and provide competition details. The page will also soon have regular updates and consultation on the development of the proposed new spray concrete Skate Park at the Leisure Centre.

The Sunday competition will run between 11am and 5pm with registration between 9.30am and 10.30am (please try and get entry forms in before the day as it will greatly help with planning).

Information on entry, entry and consent forms and the planned running order of the day will all be on the Facebook page (the order of the day may change with numbers).

There will be separate competitions for Under 13 and 13 to 17 for both Scooter riders and BMXers. In addition, there will be an over 18 (and pro riders) BMX knock out Jam and an “all in” Skateboard and Inline competition.

There is a £2 entrance fee for each competition, with an array of prizes to be won. The use of helmets is compulsory and other safety equipment is recommended; some helmets will be available on the day.

Both festival days will have several pro rider demos from scooter riders, BMXers and skateboarders and the Saturday will offer “have a go sessions” with some equipment provided.

All are welcome to both days and the Sunday will offer barbecued food and drink at reasonable prices (courtesy of Soho caterers) and ice cream (Licata), so come along and be amazed by some of the skills and talents of local young people, both as competitors and organisers.

The two days are funded by South Gloucestershire Council’s Positive Activity Fund and through sponsorship from the Willow Brook Centre. Young people’s involvement in planning and organising the festival is

On the upside, this winter’s lack of frost has resulted in minimal early morning windscreen scraping. On the downside, none of last year’s slugs have frozen, so they are back. Unfortunately, unlike my sprout cage, they haven’t blown away either.

The plots are beginning to spring into life as the sun’s rays begin to warm them. Bean cane wigwams carefully constructed, trenches carefully measured and dug. Potatoes and onions are starting to sprout and we have started to eat the first of last year’s leeks. A little less manure applied this spring will hopefully result in less weirdly shaped carrots that will not frighten the children!

Willow Brook Briefing from shopping centre manager Andy Wynn

T

he shopping centre industry, like most others I guess, has a series of annual awards nights. One of the most high profile is the Sceptre Awards, which cover various aspects of centre management from marketing to lettings.

In 2013, Willow Brook won the Waste Management category and we were delighted this month to hear that we have been shortlisted for 2014’s Energy Management category.

The shortlist of six includes prominent centres like Arndale in Manchester and Victoria in Nottingham. Whether or not we win, to be shortlisted is a great achievement for Willow Brook.

With the Bradley Stoke Community Festival upon us, we’re looking forward to

seeing the skating demonstrations that we have sponsored.

Graham Baker, the town council’s youth participation worker, has done a great job to pull this together and I’m hoping that the weather holds out to give us all some great demonstrations from the pro-riders before Bradley Stoke’s own budding stars show us how it’s done at Sunday’s competition.

We have agreed to sponsor two local sports team recently: Aretians RFC have a team which Willow Brook are sponsoring in Bristol Touch, a mixed touch rugby tournament they are hosting throughout the summer; we are also sponsoring Bradley Stoke Youth Football Club’s U13 team for the coming two seasons.

BS in Bloom colouring competition winners

By Sara Messenger of Bradley Stoke in Bloom (BSiB) t would seem that even the weather approved of our May workday! The sun shone all day as we planted two wildflower meadows outside the library – we put in a mixture of seeds and plants, Cowslips, Buttercups, Cornflowers, Oxalis to name but a few. We have put up a temporary fence to discourage people from walking over the seeds and would ask everyone to walk round the beds to give the seedlings a chance.

Four butterfly boxes, made by our local Alzheimer’s Group, and bee houses, donated by ‘Grow Wild’ were also put up along with some bright whirling flowers. A bird feeder, which will be looked after by Bradley Stoke Library staff, added the final touch. Our thanks go to the Leisure Centre for allowing us to set these up on their grounds.

It was very hard to pick the winners in our Colouring Competition. But we are now able to announce that Evie Sanders, Faith Deverall and Abishek Aditya won their age groups.

Everyone who entered received a certificate and a dahlia (donated

by Almondsbury Garden Centre) and the 1st prize winners also received a £5 book token and a ladybird bag of sweets. Thanks to librarian Gabrielle Suddell

Almondsbury Garden Centre have given our planting plans a huge boost by donating five crates of assorted plants, many of which are intended for the roundabout flower beds. On the subject of roundabouts, the paperwork required is a lot more involved than we’d anticipated, but we’re working on it!

We’ve already received the first entry to our annual ‘Best Front Garden’ competition (to be judged at the end of July) and for the first time we are holding a ‘Best Planted Pot’ competition, to be judged at the Bradley Stoke Community Carnival on 23rd August, with two categories: Children’s pot – up to 13 years and Adults pot - 14 years and over. The rules are that you must live in Bradley Stoke, not be connected with the BSiB Steering Committee and agree to publicity photos. The pot must be no more than 18” wide and you must be able to get it to the Carnival for judging. Entry forms are available from the town council offices and on our website and Facebook page.

News Cycling club celebrates 4th anniversary

O

n Sunday 18th May, Stokes Cycling Club members celebrated their fourth birthday the only way they know how, with a ride to The Langley Arms in Emersons Green and a rather large birthday cake!

The club started as a way of getting local people out on their bikes to ride safely in a group.

They are very proud to have been running for four years and are growing in numbers each year

Riders who started with the club just a few years ago have seen a marked improvement in their cycling ability, stamina and health, which is a fantastic achievement.

This is still is their aim, but now with so many people interested in cycling, they have many different rides available to suit all ages and abilities.

Novice rides are for those just starting out and wanting to build confidence, the medium and long rides are for cyclists who want a

bit more of a challenge.

They are also very lucky to have a fully qualified mountain bike instructor on the team, so MTB rides are available and for those who want to make an evening of it in the summer they offer social rides. All their rides have stops, which usually involve cake or a good old fry up!

They like to host local events in the area; the Easter Bunny Ride being one of them. It’s suitable for families and is available to all, including tag-alongs, trailers, bikes with stabilisers, etc.

The event has attracted larger numbers year on year and is always a big hit with the children.

They are also present at community events such as the Bradley Stoke Community Festival and later in the year they will be teaming up with Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research to help run the Martin Dean Bristol Bikeathon.

Getting to know the new Mayor: John Ashe

By Nikki Hallur ouncillor John Ashe was elected as the new mayor of Bradley Stoke on Wednesday 21st May, and he kindly found some time to answer a few of our questions, so that readers of The Journal could get to know him better.

John recalls moving to Bradley Stoke back in 1992, following the birth of his twin boys. He says the

decision was based on the value and location of the house he bought, as it was close to schools and had good access to the road network, which was important as John’s work at the time involved travel around the South West.

The new mayor praised the Willow Brook Centre which provides many of the amenities required for a town of this size.

John points out that even his mother has moved next door, having relocated from Redland after John’s father passed away.

“I like Bradley Stoke so much,” John tells us, “and my mum says it’s the best move she made.”

We asked if there was anything the new mayor would like to see improved, and John mentioned “the problems we have with rush hour traffic”. He said that Bradley Stoke is a car focussed commuter town, being built between three motorways, but improvements are in the pipeline.

Some examples include the new bus link connecting the Mall to Hengrove, and the new link road that will connect from the bottom of Bradley Stoke Way to the ring road by the UWE campus. The idea behind these improvements is that people will use public transport more, which he says “remains to be seen”.

As for his work with Bradley Stoke, John says he doesn’t have a specific project as things are constantly changing in the town and he likes “to get involved with everything.” The new mayor says he believes in treating people with the same respect we would like to receive, and this is his message. He also says that values that matter for a community such as ours is its sense of neighbourliness and safety.

John mentions that he and his wife Dawn have not even considered moving house, let alone relocating to a different

area, because the layout, safety and amenities of the town fulfil their needs so well, with “churches and pubs dotted around, as a sign of a vibrant and thriving community”.

In his spare time, John enjoys golfing, although he doesn’t claim to be very good at it! He also enjoys growing vegetables, having thirty canes with runner beans in his back garden at the moment, as well as the usual greenhouse plants. The mayor says he is also open to “a good laugh” and enjoys going to Colston Hall for a bit of comedy once in a while.

Ask the Doctor with Dr Norman Douglas of Bradley Stoke Surgery Demystifying media myths about DNAR (“Do Not Attempt Resuscitation”) DNAR is one of the most maligned acronyms in medical practice. It does not mean “Do not care.” “Do not treat.”

“Do not give due respect.” It should be used as a method of communication to all medical personnel that they have the instructions from the patient and their loved ones not to try to revive them once life has passed away. A hospital attendant or an ambulance crew member has a duty to try to resuscitate an obviously dead person unless they have had this instruction relayed to them. It is only discussed when a person is terminally ill and when all appropriate treatments for their terminal conditions have been tried and failed.

A terminally ill patient with heart failure, incurable cancer, end stage renal failure or end stage respiratory failure can still have a very good quality of

life, but once our organs decide to fail completely an attempt to resuscitate can be cruel and certainly will be non productive.

All other treatments for infection, pain, dehydration, confusion, agitation etc. will be given aggressively if required.

Community Carnival plans take shape

By Sara Messenger he date for this year’s Community Carnival is confirmed as Saturday 23rd August. This year, we have an ‘international’ theme, which we hope will reflect the multicultural nature of Bradley Stoke.

The parade will start at 1pm at Brook Way Activity Centre, travelling along Brook Way and ending at the Jubilee Centre.

Groups already committed to joining in the parade include 1st Bradley Stoke Rainbows, the Twinning Association, Stoke Gifford Taekwondo, Bradley Stoke in Bloom, the South Glos Chinese Association and the Freewheelers! Although this year we will be without Rebelado and the Flaming Feathers, who added more than a touch of glamour to last year’s procession, we hope

instead to add more of a family atmosphere with performers from Bezerkaz Circus. All community groups are invited to participate, so if you have costumes or a national dress, come and show them off! There will be prizes for the best children’s costume (under 14 years old) and the best adult / group costume, which will be awarded on the day.

We hope to see all our local schools join in the parade, so to help support them in this, we are offering them free circus and carnival skills workshops. These will be run by World Jungle. In addition to the school workshops, there will be several free community workshops, which will be run by Bezerkaz Circus.

The fun fair will be open from Thursday to Monday and we are hoping, weather permitting, to

have hot air balloon ascents over the carnival weekend.

Free pitches are available to all community groups for fundraising or just displays and limited (non-catering) commercial pitches are also available for a very reasonable cost, although all groups will need to supply their own table and a gazebo! If you or your group would like to be in the parade or if you want a pitch, we’d love to hear from you!

wo young coaches at Bradley Stoke Town Youth Football Club (BSYFC) have been recognised for their contributions to the club by external bodies.

Jamie Kerton received a Chair’s Community Award from South Gloucestershire Council, while Ross Lee was chosen as the winner of the Gloucestershire Football Association (GFA) Young Volunteer of the Year Award.

Jamie started coaching at BSYFC in November 2010 when he was 15 years old. He is still coaching and managing the club. Jamie has been coaching the entry level mixed children of Reception and Year 1 age group for over three years and coaching the U9/U10 girls for nearly 2 years. He is one of the coaches who take part in the club’s inschool coaching programme, which coaches over 800 children.

Martin Lee commented: “Jamie is a delight to have at BSYFC. He has shown years of dedication and he is one of the hardest working coaches in the club. He helps out at the Bradley Stoke Festival every year as well as all of his BSYFC duties within the club. hile we’re still seeing low levels of crime in Bradley Stoke, I would like to remind you to be on your guard after a recent report of a burglary in which jewellery was stolen.

This happened in the day time – between 11.30am and 1.20pm on Friday 9th May. The thieves smashed a glass door panel and used the keys left inside the lock to open the door.

Thieves are currently choosing to take jewellery and cash over electrical items, so I would encourage you to keep yours locked away safely. I’d also recommend taking photos of your precious items.

If you do have any unexpected callers or see any unfamiliar vehicles in your area, do please make a note of the description and registration details.

If you see someone acting suspiciously at a neighbour’s house, please call 999 immediately.

We have recently dealt with a young man after some damage at Baileys Court Activity Centre.

A 17-year-old man has admitting damaging a light at the cricket pavilion. He’s agreed to pay for the damage and has been referred to the Youth Panel.

Finally, I’d like to thank the people who came forward in response to our appeal in March about an incident in Oaktree Crescent. A couple were walking home one night when a man was abusive, threw beer at them and demanded cash. He made off empty-handed when they called the police. Thanks to information from local people we have now arrested and charged a 19-year-old man with attempted robbery.

Stokes Singers’ 21st anniversary concert

T

his year the community choir celebrate their 21st anniversary with a concert on Saturday 21st June at The Church of Christ the King, Mautravers Close, Bradley Stoke BS32 8EE starting at 7pm.

They will be singing songs from their past 21 years. Their current Musical Director is Phil Lawrence and during the evening two of their previous leaders will join them to conduct a couple of past favourites. In addition, a new song has been written to celebrate the occasion.

Before every concert, the choir members nominate a chosen charity and guests are asked to

make a donation during halftime refreshments. This year the collection will be for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The choir rehearses at The Coniston Community Centre, The Parade, Coniston Road, Patchway every Thursday 7.30pm to 9.30pm. This is a mixed choir singing in four part harmony and anyone over the age of 18 years interested in joining is welcome to come along. You will not be asked to give an audition.

Duke of Edinburgh Award success

T

he first cohort of Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) students at Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS) have completed their awards.

The seven successful students are: Sophie Maxted, Sean Watts, Siobhan Fahey, Sean Fahey, Ryan Wembridge, Luke Lorenzi and Seb Jackson.

The Silver Award involves completing a programme of ‘volunteering’, ‘skills’ and ‘physical’ activities that lasts up to twelve months.

BSCS now has its first ever cohort of Bronze DofE students working towards their awards and the school says it is “very proud of the hard work and dedication that the students have shown to this very worthwhile extra curricular activity”.

Young Halle clicks with Tesco and bags donation for school

A

pupil at a Stoke Lodge school has bagged a big prize in an art competition organised by the Bradley Stoke Tesco Extra store to tell customers about its Click & Collect online grocery shopping service.

Halle Wardle, aged 10, who attends St Chad’s Primary School, won £250 for the school plus a £25 Tesco gift card for herself.

But the best prize of all was seeing the winning artwork printed on 250 re-usable jute shopping bags which will now be distributed free to parents and children at the winning school.

Halle, accompanied by classmates, family and school staff, recently visited the Click & Collect unit at the Bradley Stoke

store to pick up her gift card and the school’s prizes.

Schoolchildren had been asked by the tesco.com team to design an eye-catching picture to go alongside the Click & Collect design to promote the new service in which shoppers can order groceries online and arrange to pick them up at a collection point in the car park.

Halle’s entry was selected by judges for its colour, impact, sense of fun and style.

The Click & Collect service is already a big hit with busy customers who want their grocery shopping picked and packed but don’t have the time to wait at home for a delivery.

Through the camera lens by Becky Ward Patchway’s Dave Harris performs live set on BSR

T

his month I was lucky enough to photograph local performer, Dave Harris, performing a live set on the drive time show of Bradley Stoke Radio (BSR). He is a solo guitarist and singer from Patchway, mainly focusing on blues music, he also plays covers of songs, from artists such as The Beatles, Eric Clapton, The Shadows and Johnny Cash.

Harris started playing gigs after he lost his fiancée to meningitis, in order to raise awareness of the illness, and to fundraise for Meningitis Now (formerly Meningitis Trust).

Speaking on BSR, he said: “Everyone knows about putting a glass on a rash, but no one knows the other symptoms such as headaches and sickness, and I wish I had”.

Through his performances, he hopes he will be able to educate people to recognise more signs than just the rash, to give others the best chance of recognising the symptoms and seeking help before it’s been left too long.

Dave Harris is an incredibly talented singer and guitarist, with a great variety of songs in his performance, and an inspiring reason for continuing to perform. You will be able to see him performing at the Bradley Stoke Carnival later this year.

PLUMBING & HEATING Scouts acquire DIY skills at B&Q The 1st Bradley Stoke Scouts have been busy over the winter, learning do-it-yourself skills. This has involved tiling, mending a tap washer, making a book shelf, replacing a fuse in a plug, drilling a hole and putting up a curtain rail.

In addition to this, the scouts attended an evening at B&Q in Cribbs Causeway, where they made a bird box.

All of this was completed with the approval of their parents, who are now looking for their children to help with their household do-it-yourself activities!

The Scouts are now enjoying the lighter nights, where they have already been sailing and attended a cycle maintenance night, courtesy of the Stokes Cycling Club.

Redrow helps build best start for Little Stoke youngsters

H

ousebuilder Redrow Homes has donated a set of new toys to a preschool based at the The Stokes Youth Centre in Little Stoke Lane.

There were smiles all round as Redrow’s mascots, Buster and Buddy Bear called in at the centre recently. The visit was a great surprise for the young members of Start Rite Pre-School, as they were presented with brand new toys for the playgroup – fittingly themed around construction!

The children, who range in age from two to five years old, spent the morning playing the part of builders, with high-visibility jackets, hard hats and wheel barrows.

The toys were a donation from Redrow, who raised money

for the community pre-school through a highly competitive darts tournament at their Bradley Stoke office. This event was part of Redrow’s 40th Year celebrations – the company has launched an Anniversary Charity Challenge with each area of the country aiming to raise as much money as possible for various good causes.

Andrew Addison, sales director for Redrow (South West), said: “It was great to see the children’s faces light up when we brought Buster and Buddy into the room. They had a great morning playing with the new toys and we hope that they will provide fun for many years to come.
