The Bristol Supertram project, announced in 2001, was an ambitious scheme that would have seen Bradley Stoke linked to Bristol city centre by a ‘light rail system’. Anyone who has bought a property within a few hundreds metres of Bradley Stoke Way will know about this, as solicitors’ searches will have informed them about the reserved route that runs the full length of this road.

The supertram project is long dead, killed off by political squabbling between Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire council, but the ambition to have a high quality public transport link between Bradley Stoke and both Bristol city centre and Cribbs Causeway

survives, in the form of the MetroBus rapid transit scheme.

When first proposed, the MetroBus vehicles were to have dedicated lanes along their entire route, but the scheme has since been stripped down such that bus lanes will now only be provided along critical sections. In Bradley Stoke, it is proposed to have a bus lane running from the Willow Brook Centre up to Aztec West and a number of other shorter sections of bus lane on the approaches to roundabouts.

The planning application was submitted in late March and there is now less than a month for the public to comment.

First orders being taken for fibre broadband on some 01454 numbers

he days of frustratinglyslow broadband connections look set to come to an end this month for some lucky subscribers on 01454 telephone numbers in Bradley Stoke, after internet service providers (ISPs) began taking orders for superfast fibre broadband.

Journal readers connected to cabinet numbers 22 (Brook Way), 35 (Webbs Wood Road) and E2 (Woodlands Lane) have reported that they have been able to place orders for the new service, with installation dates in early April being promised by ISPs. Streets served by cabinet 22 are believed to include Cornfield Close (part), Dewfalls Drive,

Stoke Meadows, Wheatfield Drive and Winsbury Way. Cabinet 35 serves Juniper Way (part) and Marjoram Close, while E2 serves Woodlands Park.

The long-awaited upgrade to Bradley Stoke’s broadband infrastructure will eventually benefit around 3,500 homes in the town, thanks to an investment programme that is being jointly funded by BT, South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) and central government.

Work on the project appears to be running ahead of schedule as SGC previously indicated that the first homes would be able to order the new service from “summer 2014” (taken to mean 1st June).

To access superfast broadband services once they become available, consumers will have to sign up for a fibre broadband package from an ISP of their choice (e.g. BT, TalkTalk, Sky, PlusNet, EE). These currently cost £5 to £10 per month more than a standard ADSL (copper

wire) service and there may be one-off charges for the provision of a new router and activation of the service. ● Making a difference: The Journal has been at the forefront of the campaign to improve broadband connections speeds in Bradley Stoke since 2010.

Brook Way consultation result shows “overwhelming” demand for better parking provision 59 per cent want more car parking; 20 per cent suggest new building

A

public consultation which asked for ideas on possible future uses for the “underused” hard court area at the Brook Way Activity Centre has found an “overwhelming” demand for increased car parking provision at the shared community centre and doctors’ surgery site.

The survey was called after council members failed to support Mayor Brian Hopkinson’s demand, at a meeting last September, for an instant decision to be made in favour of building on the land, with half of it being given over to

the Incredible Kids charity.

A total of 242 responses were received, of which 116 specified improved parking as the sole suggestion. A further 27 responses included parking as one of several suggestions, meaning that 59 per cent of respondents asked for something to be done about parking.

A “new building” of some form was suggested by 49 respondents (20 per cent), while six people asked specifically requested the provision of allotments.

the meeting that the purpose of the consultation had been to “gather ideas” and described the response rate as “terrific”.

Must get parking right

“Whatever we do, we have to get the car parking right. We need to be conscious of the fact that if we put [some new facility] there, it will increase the demand for parking.”

Cllr Ben Randles agreed that the response in favour of sorting out the parking situation had been “overwhelming” and said it wouldn’t be good for the council “to be seen not to be acting on it”.

However, some other councillors, notably Tom Aditya and Andy Ward, pointed out that the parking problem had become much less of an issue since the surgery introduced disciplinary measures to ensure that its staff are parking off-site, although another, Sarah Pomfret, cautioned that “we need time to monitor the situation, to see if it is maintained”.

It was also noted that the surgery’s enforcement strategy had led to “an increase in staff parking in the residential streets surrounding the site”.

During discussion it was noted that two particular groups, Incredible Kids and the Scouts, had “commented strongly” in favour of having a new building or facilities for their own use, but Cllr Jones opined: “It’s not ours to just give away to one or two groups because they have finance in place”.

Committee to look at ideas Following further discussion, it was agreed that the results of the consultation “be passed to the Leisure, Youth & Amenities Committee for them to look into ideas in more detail, with a view to them coming back to Full Council in 6 – 8 months time with a further report for consideration”.

Footballing greats visit BSYFC training session

B

radley Stoke Youth FC welcomed England’s 1966 World Cup hero Sir Geoff Hurst and ex-Three Lions boss Graham Taylor to a special event celebrating the ongoing relationship between the club and local McDonald’s franchisee Mike Guerin.

Mike, who owns ten McDonald’s restaurants in Bristol, is in his tenth year of supporting the team and during that time has donated approximately £25,000 worth of new kit and training equipment from McDonald’s kit supplier Precision to help the BSYFC teams – which range from under7s through to under-11s.

he ninth annual Swimathon, organised by the Rotary Club of Bristol Aztec, took place at the Bradley Stoke swimming pool on Saturday 15th March.

Previous Swimathon events have raised around £25,000 for local and international charities and hopes are high that the latest Swimathon will break all records and raise another £5,000.

A total of 27 teams took to the water, representing local Cubs, Brownies, Scouts, Beavers, Bradley Stoke Youth Rugby @St Mary’s, Bradley Stoke Community School, BSG Marlins Swimming Club, Rotary, Novi Survat Trust (India) and Rainbow Dreams Trust (South Africa).

In excess of 2,100 lengths were swum on the night and the

individual team with the most lengths (135) came from Bradley Stoke Community School, represented by Jemma Smith, Oliver Elderfield, Niamh Brown and Tom Bees.

The event was also covered as a live outside broadcast by Bradley Stoke Radio and swimmers enjoyed the motivational music and the opportunity to be interviewed whilst receiving well earned certificates and medals.

Preparations are already in place for next year’s event and, with places at a premium, you should register your interest in competing sooner rather than later!

Letters and Opinions No council tax freeze for those on benefits It was with interest that I read the article entitled ‘Council Tax frozen for fourth year’ in your March edition. A glowing report gave the impression that all is fine and dandy and that the freeze will be implemented due to: “positive progress with its current savings programme which will have delivered savings of £43 million by 2014/2015 and higher than expected Council receipts.”

We are all aware of the “higher than expected Council receipts” which will be obtained through the annual £36 charge for emptying our green bins, a charge, which in itself is a travesty.

However, what the article failed to mention was that people on benefits (and most of these people are not scroungers but struggling to cope from

day to day with all the stress that entails) … they will, from April 2014, be charged a portion of Council Tax. South Gloucestershire Council has seen fit to supplement the Council coffers by targeting the poorest in our society – is it little wonder that this fact was not mentioned in their article! It must have been possible to make savings elsewhere without hammering the poor and needy even further into the ground.

So shame on you, South Gloucestershire Council, not only for implementing the recommendation but also for not even having the guts to admit your appalling decision.

Praise for Scouts’ war memorial efforts I would like to say “well done” to the 1st Bradley Stoke Scout Group for their hard work in

getting a war memorial installed in the Willow Brook town square.

I am not going to get into the argument of whether the memorial is in the right place or not, but do feel that the Scout group should feel proud of themselves for doing something they felt needed to be done.

Things are looking up at Bluebell Gardens You didn’t have to be Irish to celebrate St Patrick’s Day at Bluebell Gardens. You just popped into the lounge. There was “welcome on the mat”!

Spuds and traditional music made an enjoyable evening.

It was just one of numerous activities currently being promoted at the ‘Gardens’.

The description of what life was like in the ‘Bluebells’ portrayed in last month’s Bradley Stoke Journal has helped to encourage activities here.

‘Slimming mornings’ on a Monday are in sharp contrast to occasions where Pukka Pies predominated with an opposite effect, no doubt. A quiz night was well patronized.

Funds raised on these activities are being devoted to the provision of garden furniture, so that residents can enjoy outdoor gettogethers in the sunshine. That’s providing the sun does shine, of course!

After a slow start, the spirit of “togetherness” is now beginning to emerge with more going on in our pleasant, though restricted, communal lounge. No TV screen ‘hanging on the wall.’ It is tucked away “out of mischief’s way” and brought out when needed. The England versus Wales rugby clash was one such occasion. “Go on England” was blared out loudly.

With trips to be arranged and a visit to the fantastic River Dance Anniversary Tour performance at Bristol Hippodrome in September, it’s plain to see the ‘Bluebells’ are blooming in the ‘Gardens’ again.

Students raise £1,400 for transplant charity in memory of Sarah

S

tudents and staff at Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS) have raised more that £1,400 for a charity that promotes organ donation and post-transplant activities.

The money was raised in memory of Sarah Port, a BSCS student who sadly passed away last summer whilst on holiday with her family.

Kevin Mashford, a representative of Transplant Sport, attended a Year 9 assembly at the school on 19th March, at which he received a cheque for £1,470, this being the amount

raised so far from the nonuniform days, the sale of ‘Sarah’ wristbands and other events organised by the students.

The assembly was also attended by the headteacher and two student representatives from Wheatfield Primary School (previously attended by Sarah), which has also been involved in the fundraising activities.

Mr Mashford, who was born with a congenital heart defect, gave a moving account of how he had undergone a series of open heart operations from the age of 8, been fitted with

pacemakers and suffered a stroke before he was lucky enough to receive a transplant in 2012.

Just 19 weeks after receiving his donated heart, he took part in a 30-mile cycling event in memory of his donor and to raise money for Transplant Sport.

According to Mr Mashford, 98% of people in the UK say

they would take an organ if they needed one, but only 31% of us are registered as donors. He urged the students to consider registering and stressed the importance of donor card holders discussing their wishes with their next of kin, as half of all potential donor organs are currently “wasted at the bedside”.

1. Children at the Bradley Stoke Busy Bees Nursery held a fun-filled mini Olympics.

Enthusiastic under-5s took part in running and egg and spoon races, long jump and throwing games, while a crawl-a-thon was held for the younger children.

News Bradley Stoke college student takes to the air waves in new show on BSR

nother very busy month in our local schools; World Book Day was celebrated on March 6th and many children and staff came dressed as their favourite book characters. A great many Harry Potters, Gandalfs, teddies and fairies were on display with the children coming up with some really original ideas, including Therese and Charlie from St Chad’s (Stoke Lodge) who came dressed as Ruby and Garnet, the identical twins from Jacqueline Wilson’s ‘Double Trouble’.

Mrs Brown, Mrs Roberts and Miss Gregory from Wheatfield School have visited Ajdovščina in Slovenia as part of the Comenius environmental project, ‘Hand in Hand for a Wonderful Land’.

They spent time at OŠ Danila Lokarja School, where they presented Wheatfield’s carbon footprint assignment and enjoyed a ‘zero km’ lunch prepared from locally sourced products and cooked by the 5th grade children.

As well as discussing new projects to work on at school, the staff visited Postojna cave, exploring the stalactites, stalagmites, curtains and pillars which have been formed over many thousands of years and the capital city, Ljubljana.

Miss Roberts told me: “It was a wonderful experience and we have returned buzzing with ideas for the project and also with ideas to transfer into our classrooms.”

Children all over Bradley Stoke raised money for Sport Relief in school by donating money to dress up in sports clothing for the day. I spotted gymnasts, swimmers, judo, tennis and golf stars as well as numerous footballers and rugby players.

Bailey’s Court Primary had a continuous relay throughout the day – children of different ages running different distances – to add up to a school total of 100km, raising almost £400.

Meadowbrook Primary raised over £500 by dressing up and selling Sport Relief wrist bands, and more was expected to be added from a sponsored mile run on 28th March.

Finally, Bailey’s Court’s production of the musical ‘Seussical’ was due to be performed at BSCS on 1st and 2nd April. Children in Key Stage 2 have worked incredibly hard, giving up evenings and Saturday mornings to produce a polished performance of the production based on the characters from Dr Seuss. All money raised is going to support a Muscular Dystrophy charity.

new radio show serving students at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (formerly Filton College) has launched on Bradley Stoke Radio (BSR).

College student James Ford, from Bradley Stoke, began hosting the weekly show on 21st March.

Running weekly on a Friday morning from 10am-12pm, the live broadcast is aimed specifically at college students.

The show centres on informing listeners about upcoming events and provides important

information about the college. It also includes guest appearances and lots of music!

Setback for council’s controversial multiple food trader plan

B

radley Stoke Town Council’s plan to allow multiple food traders to operate in the car park of each of its three community centres has suffered a setback after the first trader to apply to South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) for a street trading licence on one of the sites was told that planning permission for a “change of use” would be required.

Last year, Santiago Pablo, owner of Papas Pizzas, was granted a permit by the town council to trade at Brook Way Activity Centre on four evenings a week, making him the second operator allowed to trade at that site.

Mr Pablo subsequently applied to SGC for the necessary

street trading licence and his application was due to be considered by the council’s Licensing Sub-Committee on 18th March. However, the hearing was cancelled after the trader withdrew his application.

Mr Pablo told The Journal that he had withdrawn his application because he had been informed

by SGC that he would also require planning permission for a “change of use” of the Brook Way site.

Prior to Mr Pablo making his licence application, the town council had concluded, following an exchange of letters with SGC, that because the area of the car park occupied by a street trader “would remain as

car parking spaces for 75% of the time, a material change of use would not take place and planning permission would not be required,” although it was stressed that “no final definitive answer” had been given by SGC. Mr Pablo added that he believed the town council should foot the bill for a planning application, as, once granted, the permission could be transferred to another permit holder of the town council’s choosing, should he decide to give up his pitch.

Asked about the issue at the March meeting of the town council’s Planning Committee, town clerk Sharon Petela confirmed that SGC is now advising that planning permission for a “change of use” is required, but insisted that obtaining this is the responsibility of the trader rather than the council.

She added that the two current traders (or their predecessors) on the council’s sites had both made their own applications for planning permission, thereby

establishing a precedent.

Even if Mr Pablo can be convinced to fund a planning application, and it is successful, he has a further hurdle to overcome in the form of six letters of objection, from neighbours of the Brook Way site, to his application for a street trading licence.

Ozzy’s Kebabs, the other business in possession of a town council permit to trade at Brook Way, began operating at the site in early March. Although the owner had been paying rent to the council since taking over the pitch from Oasis Foods last year, he had not been trading pending the fitting out of a new van.

Papas Pizzas continues to trade in the car park of Baileys Court Activity Centre on Thursday and Friday nights, where it continues to be the sole trader.

No applications have so far been forthcoming from operators wishing to trade at the Jubilee Centre, where neighbours accused the council of failing to carry out a promised consultation.

Bradley Stoke through the camera lens by Becky Ward Hollow Tree celebrates its first birthday in style!

S

aturday 8th March marked a very special event in the calendars of both the Hollow Tree Pub in Bradley Stoke, and its staff. This month the Hollow Tree celebrated it’s first birthday in style (quite literally!).

To mark the occasion in traditional fashion, they threw a birthday party in the pub! The event was a family-friendly fancy dress party, with special guests including Mario, Luigi and of course everybody else at the pub.

Inside, a magician performed an act to entertain the children, complete with a turtle who apparently gets stage fright!

After he coaxed the turtle from his shell, they continued to wow the audience and ended by giving everyone a balloon animal or, in some cases, a ‘space gun’, which one boy proudly held aloft.

Bradley Stoke Community School also joined in the festivities, with a bake sale on the front lawn. The money raised from the sale is going to be used to buy computers to donate to the Sawa Sawa Academy in Watamu, during a forthcoming link visit to Kenya.

Pathways tidied and herb garden planted

By Sara Messenger radley Stoke In Bloom (BSiB) had a very busy March workday! In the morning the group led a public ‘Big Spring Clean.’ 18 Volunteers, including first timers Rob, Rachel, Heather & John, litter-picked the paths from the Brook Way Activity Centre up to the Aztec West Roundabout.

An amazing amount of rubbish was collected, including traffic cones, a wig, trousers and a fire place! Although everyone worked hard, we also had some fun and also fresh scones, from passerby Thomas! Three of our town councillors joined us for the day, donning jackets and getting down to work and everyone agreed the whole area looked much better afterwards.

In the afternoon, BSiB installed a Community Herb Garden in front of the Doctors Surgery and the Brook Way Activity centre.

The garden consists of four large tubs, made by local carpenter Julian Smith, which have been planted up with herbs. The list includes: apple mint, basil, bay, borage, chamomile, chives, curry, fennel, marjoram, mint, oregano, parsley, pineapple sage, rosemary, sage, thyme – so there should be something to suit everyone’s tastes. These herbs were chosen to give a wide a variety as possible, although care was taken to ensure that there

were few herbs that would attract bees to the tubs. The garden is there for the community, so everyone is welcome to come and snip off any herbs they would like to try.

BSiB would like to thank Almondsbury Garden Centre who donated all the compost for this project and also Dr Kilmartin and her family, who all came to help on the day and for agreeing to maintain the tubs on our behalf.

The Surgery Manager, Sandra Lloyd, said: “Thank you so much for the wonderful planters containing the herb garden, you certainly had a very busy Saturday! It looks really lovely and has improved the look of the Surgery so much. I am sure the patients will be very appreciative, as the Partners and I are. Please pass on our gratitude and thanks to all at Bradley Stoke in Bloom.”

We feel that BSiB has achieved much despite it being such an incredibly small group; it now has just four committee members and one regular workday helper.

The group just does not have enough manpower to plant up and maintain large flower beds or rows of hanging baskets which is the mainstay of most other ‘in bloom’ groups, so until we can get more workday helpers, to make any impact the group has to be very inventive with its projects.

planning application for the North Fringe to Hengrove Package (NFHP) MetroBus, a “rapid bus route” between the Bristol North and East Fringes and South Bristol via Bristol City Centre, has been submitted to South Gloucestershire and Bristol City councils.

If approved, the project will result in significant changes being made to Bradley Stoke Way and the Aztec West Roundabout, both of which lie on the section of the MetroBus route between Cribbs Causeway and Parkway North.

According to the West of England Office, which is promoting the project on behalf of four local councils in the former Avon area, “MetroBus services will be fast, frequent and reliable with new, lowemission vehicles. They will provide high quality passenger facilities, information and interchanges and safe and secure access to stops. Services will run on segregated routes in some places, and will be given priority

over other road users at traffic signals when running on the public highway. The route will incorporate new bus stops and shelters, and shared cycleway and footway as appropriate.”

According to a Planning Statement submitted with the application, land in the south-eastern quadrant of the Aztec West Roundabout, comprising a redundant section of Woodlands Lane, will be used as a site compound during the construction phase.

South of Bradley Stoke, the MetroBus will pass along Great Stoke Way before joining the planned Stoke Gifford By-Pass at the Parkway North Roundabout.

The total cost of the NFHP project, including the construction of the Stoke Gifford By-Pass, is estimated at £102 million, with 50% coming from the Department for Transport (DfT), 30% from South Gloucestershire Council and 20% from Bristol City Council.

The councils are hoping to receive final approval of funding from the DfT by the end of 2014,

allowing contracts to be awarded in spring 2015.

New manager at Willow Brook

T

he new manager of Bradley Stoke’s Willow Book shopping centre, Andy Wynn, says he has enjoyed meeting representatives of the local community since his arrival in the town back in February, when he took over from Scott Lahive, who had been in post since the centre first opened its doors in October 2008.

Andy, 34, who commutes daily from Swindon, has previously managed several shopping centres in the south of England, most recently Duke of York Square in Chelsea and The Brunel in Swindon.

His career began modestly as a 19-year-old security guard at The Oracle in Reading and, after moving up through the ranks, he has now amassed 8 years experience in centre management.

Although he admits to never having visited Bradley Stoke before applying for the job, he says he can see why people think it’s a nice place to live and work: “The place has an almost old-fashioned ‘village’ feel. It’s actually quite insular, in a positive, ‘community spirit’ kind of way. A lot of people seem proud to be ‘Bradley Stokers’ and are very clear that the town is not a suburb of Bristol.”

During his first few weeks in the job, he has established links with Bradley Stoke Community School and Bowsland Green Primary School. Meetings have also been held with officers and members of the local councils and representatives of the Patchway Dementia Alliance.

He says he wants the centre to be outward looking towards the community and is keen to

work proactively with all the local schools, which he sees as “engaging with the customers of tomorrow”.

“Any work we can do with schools is ‘customer service in advance’ and an investment in the future of Bradley Stoke,” he adds.

Pupils from Bowsland Green were recently given a tour of the centre’s control room and recycling facilities and the young visitors were treated to a healthy fruit snack, courtesy of Tesco.

The trip was organised after Andy contributed to a ‘learning about the local area’ lesson at the school by running a prize quiz on the history of Bradley Stoke’s town centre.

In his view, the centre has a good mix of tenants, not just the combination of a large supermarket and pure service outlets that is the norm for a development of Willow Brook’s size. The town square and retail terrace are “nice features”, although he agrees with the findings of a recent Journal poll that there is a need for a dedicated fashion retailer within the centre.

identified as his proudest achievement - of which Andy comments: “Scott did an awful lot to reduce the impact Willow Brook has on the environment and has not left much for us to do!” However, Andy is adamant that the organisation should not “rest on its laurels” and says he hopes to reduce water and electricity usage even further.

Christmas decorations are another topic on the new manager’s radar and he teasingly hints that we might see “a few surprises” at other times of the year as well!

Stoke Lodge school proposes new access route from Jubilee

radley Stoke Town Council has given “in principle” agreement to a proposed package of measures that would allow pupils to access Stoke Lodge Primary School through a new gate from the Jubilee Centre site.

Representatives of the school and South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) attending a council meeting on 12th March said the new gate, combined with a new footpath linking it with Savages Wood Road, would provide a safer off-road route for the many pupils of the school who live in Bradley Stoke.

The proposals also include extending the overflow car park at the Jubilee Centre to provide 16 additional places and possibly introducing traffic calming measures at the entrance to the site.

Stoke Lodge Primary School currently has a two form entry, meaning that the total number of children attending is 420, of which about 180 (42 per cent) are said to live in Bradley Stoke.

However, SGC has announced plans for the school to expand to three form entry (630 pupils in total) by September 2016 and it is expected that many of the additional pupils will also come from Bradley Stoke.

Currently, a significant number of children from Bradley Stoke access the school by walking along Savages Wood Road and then taking the footpath that connects it with School Close.

The town council estimates that 30 – 50 parents park in the Jubilee Centre each day and walk their children along this route.

However, many others are taken to the school by car, which adds to congestion in School Close, where police have raised concerns about road safety.

The proposals were broadly welcomed by councillors. Cllr Robert Jones said it was right to encourage walking to school but welcomed the fact that the representatives weren’t trying to hide the fact that some people would still want to arrive by car.

Mayor Brian Hopkinson, who is also a councillor for the Stoke Lodge ward on Patchway Town Council, said it would only be people from Bradley Stoke who would park at the Jubilee Centre and the proposals would “make our youngsters safe”.

Cllr Ben Walker, however, raised concerns about the extra vehicle movements that would occur in Savages Wood Road, with parents arriving, dropping off and leaving.

Following discussion, councillors agreed to support “in principle” the idea of the new gate, the new access path and the additional car parking provision on the Jubilee Centre site (but not

the suggested traffic calming, at the insistence of Cllr John Ashe).

Councillors requested that a formalised plan be brought to their Planning Committee meeting on 23rd April for a final decision.

£200,000 secured for proposed new skate park Bradley Stoke Town Council has been successful in obtaining £200,000 from South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) towards the cost of building a replacement skate park at a new location within the grounds of Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre.

The council favours an ‘in situ spray concrete’ design for the new park, which is said to have greatly reduced repair and maintenance costs and a significantly longer life span than the ‘above ground’ construction of the current skate park.

The estimated cost of the project is put at £275,000, which includes £50,000 for a partial covering of the park, so that it can be used in all weathers.

Meeting on 25th February, SGC’s Southern Brooks Area Forum awarded the project £100,000 from its New Homes Bonus Fund allocation. A further £100,000 of capital expenditure was then provisionally allocated by SGC’s Full Council on 19th March.

The town council has already committed £50,000 of its reserves to the project, leaving £25,000 to find.

Another application for funding made by the town council to the area forum, this time from its Positive Activities Fund, was also successful. As a result, a two-day skate event will be incorporated into this (and next) year’s Bradley Stoke Community Festival.

The awarded grant of £2,400, in each of the two years, will be used to hire a 5ft mini-ramp for the demonstration area at the Jubilee Centre the Saturday of the festival and to stage a skate competition at the current skate park on the Sunday.

Local cricket club gears up for new season

By Simon Page ith the weather improving and spring in the air this can only mean one thing, the start of the cricket season! Bradley Stoke Cricket Club, which was formed in 1991, is prospering and now runs four sides on a Saturday, two on a Sunday, plus youth teams at under-9s, under-11s, under-13s, under-15s and under-17s.

Club Secretary Simon Page says the club is thriving and everyone at the club is very enthusiastic about the forthcoming season.

The Saturday sides all play in the newly re-organised Bristol and District Cricket Leagues, with the first team captained by Dan Peachey in the Senior Division, second team captained by Gareth Price in the third division, third team captained by Alan Cotterell in the ninth division and the fourth team captained by Nick

English in Division 12.

The fourth team is essentially a link between youth team cricket and adult cricket, with the club encouraging and giving many of their youth players a chance to participate in adult cricket for the first time.

their games at Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS).

The club started preparing for the season with indoor nets at BSCS starting in February and these have had a really encouraging attendance. Director of Youth Barry Radford says the youth team training starts with four weeks of indoor nets (also at the school) from 23rd March

through to 13th April between the hours of 12.15pm and 1.15pm.

Outdoor training for the youths will start on 20th April at Baileys Court between the hours of 10.30am and 12pm and will continue, weather permitting, every Sunday.

The league season for the adult teams starts on 3rd May, but the club has arranged friendlies from 5th April onwards.

The clubhouse at Baileys Court has a well-stocked bar, so if you are in the vicinity and fancy popping in to support your local club and watch a good standard of cricket, you are very welcome.

The club are always on the look-out for more adult and youth team members, so if you fancy giving it a go, please contact the club and you will be made very welcome.

Are there any areas of Chiropractic you have a particular interest in?

I enjoy treating patients from all ages and walks of life. I also have a special interest in pre and post-natal care, helping to relieve and prevent many of the problems that can arise both during and after pregnancy. My other interests also include sports injuries and rehabilitation. Having worked closely with a number of rugby teams in the past, I’ve certainly had my work cut out!

Why might pregnant patients need chiropractic care?

During pregnancy, the hormone changes in the body cause the ligaments to become softer and stretch to prepare the body for labour. However, this puts

How did you get into Chiropractic?

I first started going to a Chiropractor when I was studying for my A-levels at school and was suffering badly from upper back pain and headaches. After feeling the benefit of treatment myself, I became interested in Chiropractic and how it can help people.

campaign to help tackle domestic abuse has been launched jointly across Avon and Somerset by the force, the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), councils and the NHS. The ‘No Excuse’ publicity campaign is designed to confront the myths abusers use to justify their abuse.

A new website has been launched alongside the campaign with advice on recognising abuse and information on the help and support that is available if you, or someone you know, is experiencing domestic abuse.

Local ladies get set to run London Marathon

O

n Sunday 13th April, twelve local women from the Sole Sisters running club will be lining up to run the London Marathon, five of them for the very first time.

Penny Greenwood, Liz Naude, Linda Millward, Amy Seymour, Rebecca Mitchell, and Kate Stuart will be joined by first-time marathon runners, Helen Smith, Jo Radford, Lisa Morris, Leona Mills, Michelle Lord and Sam Carpenter.

Local sports & remedial massage therapist Kate described herself as being a reluctant runner or a “should run” kind of runner before she discovered Sole Sisters Running Club. Christmas Eve 2011 she went along for her first run with the group where she was welcomed with much kindness, support and encouragement.

Shortly after this she did the London Marathon in April 2012 and has since become a coach at the club. This year she will be running London for the 3rd time for Heart UK in memory of her dad John Baker.

Penny Greenwood

Penny ran her first marathon in 2010 to raise money for St Peter’s Hospice who had cared for her mother during her final year. At age 50 her mother turned her life around, passed a degree in chiropody and started her own

business which she loved doing for over 20 years. She told Penny: “Do whatever you love for as long as you can.” Penny runs because she loves it and the amazing group of Sole Sisters that she runs with. Penny says: “We share everything – it is our outlet for life.” To date she has raised over £4,000 for St Peter’s and will continue for as long as she can.

Liz Naude

Liz started running with Sole Sisters four years ago with a half marathon as her goal. She never imagined running a marathon, let alone lining up at London this year to run her second marathon in two years. She describes the support and encouragement from the club as being fantastic and the thing that has kept her going on those cold Saturday morning runs. Liz is running for Shine Together a local Frenchay/ Southmead hospital charity.

Leona Mills

Local teacher Leona was treated for a heart condition in 2010 and during pre op checks it was discovered her thyroid was no longer working properly, causing her to gain weight, feel lethargic, and lose confidence. In June 2012, she felt she needed to make a change and joined the Sole Sisters Running club on the beginner’s course. Just two years on, 4 stone lighter, fitter and

happier, she is training to run the London Marathon for the British Heart Foundation in memory of her dad, who died suddenly at the age of 53.

The club welcomes women runners of all abilities and ages

M

ore than one in three of the people reading this article will develop or have had cancer in their lifetime. What a pleasant fact to introduce this article. But, there are many more reassuring facts that we need to consider. More than fifty percent of those who develop cancer have very good survival rates, meaning they are more likely to succumb through other disease processes. Less than one per cent of cancers occur in children. Many cancers are associated with life style choices and their incidence can be decreased. Some have genetic links so can be tested for and treated at an early stage. Some are caused by infective elements and can be screened for and prevented if discovered at a precancerous stage.

Cancer is the number one fear of the British public. So what can we do about it? How do we

allay our fears and calm our anxiety?

We can all decrease our risk of developing cancers by leading a sensible lifestyle, eating properly, exercising regularly, avoiding too much sun exposure, not drinking heavily and regularly and not

offered every three years after age 47 and up to age 73, when a female can then refer themselves if desired. Men can do testicular examination and report any lumps or changes to their GP for investigation. Cervical smears, or what is now an HPV testing, is really important in females over

I hope this article hasn’t struck fear in the hearts of this lovely community. If it means even one person decreases their risks, one extra person has early detection or one additional person starts self examination, then it will have been well worth it.

Brook Court couples celebrate anniversaries

By Grahame Holloway wo Brook Court couples have recently celebrated special moments in their long married lives, reaching their 65th and 60th anniversaries respectively.

First to celebrate were Don and Daphne Grace, whose anniversary fell on 26th February, sixty-five years after they were married in Tewkesbury Abbey and enjoyed a honeymoon on the Isles of Scilly. Don, who was born in Marlborough, had first met Daphne, the daughter of a prewar London policeman, whilst both were working for the Bristol Aircraft Company. Don was a draughtsman working on the design of engines, whilst Daphne worked in one of the company offices. Recalling those days, Don says he worked on such engines as the Hercules and Centaurus as well as undertaking development work on the ill-fated Brabazon.

younger days, Don was to remain with the company until it closed enabling him to take an early retirement after thirty years’ service.

Moving from Shirehampton to Brook Court in November 2012, Daphne says their daughter lives nearby which enables them to also keep in touch with a granddaughter and great grandchildren.

For Frank and Greta Lowe, who celebrated their 60th anniversary with a celebratory party at Brook Court a day later, love had blossomed when they were both just sixteen and had started work for the same Patchway company, the former Robert Watson, a construction and building engineering company. Frank was starting out as an apprentice plumber and Greta as a shorthand typist in the company office.

Change of career

However, Frank’s apprenticeship with the company was shortlived. Searching for adventure, at seventeen he joined the Merchant Navy with Port Line, a cargo division of Cunard.

He says he did ‘see the world’, including three trips to Australia, but his thoughts were always of the girl he’d left behind and when Frank was twenty-one, and Greta twenty, they were married in St. Peter’s Church, Filton, on

In their sixty years of marriage they never moved far from their roots, moving into their retirement apartment in December 2012.

Frank still enjoys a round of golf whilst Greta keeps close contact with the rest of the family, including five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom live locally.

Almondsbury Allotments news A very welcome change in the weather!

N

ow I don’t know about you, but at 10.30pm each night, I turn to the BBC, in hope of good news for the Almondsbury Allotmenteers… And on Saturday 3rd March the cloud sprinklers were turned off and the sun came out… hooray… our first straight week of dry weather since Christmas, and the allotments started to dry fast.

With light winds evaporating the ground, allotmenteers grasped the opportunity… at one point I counted ten families working the land… a wonderful sight.

If the weather isn’t enough to get you down, think of those courageous folk on the allotment, who battle the Crazy Pigeons who wait until your back is turned before swooping out of the sky, Battle of Britain style, split screen goggles, and a hungry glint in their eye. Whilst the allotmenteer chases the squadron off with old rake in hand, the Rabbit Raiders crawl belly style through the grass (yes, the grass on the path is getting a bit long!). Some say countryside vermin has a coordinated fight back plan, but maybe that’s just too Orwellian!

At least the allotmenteer has a chance, as you can see the aforementioned pesky critters, unlike the Stealthy Slugs. No I’m not talking about the chap who stands on the palace singing about his Baggy Trousers, more the slimy sort who wouldn’t give you the time of day, but when you look the other way, sucks the life out of your cabbage! Not a nice way to go…

Whilst the Almondsbury Allotmenteer patrols and tends to approx. 50m², Hortham Farm is also suffering… due to flooding, we have had to write off 325,000m² of peas!

Fingers crossed the sun has finally come to stay…

After three years of successfully organising a family Easter Ride, the Stokes Cycling Club are becoming pros and are raring to go for the next one.

The event is completely FREE and if you are stuck with ideas of what to do with the kids on Easter Sunday then come and join us for a few hours of fun!

The last three years has seen numbers grow year on year, and for 2014 we hope to keep going with the tradition and it would be great if even more families come and see what we are all about.

There will be a choice of a 3

or 6 mile ride to which everyone is welcome. This is aimed at families including children of all ages, whether in trailers, tagalongs, or on their own bikes.

To keep it fun there will be a quiz and if you manage to answer all the questions then the top three winners will receive a rather tasty Easter Egg, sponsored by Wards Solicitors, who have kindly supported us again this year. For everyone who enters there will be a little treat for taking part.

Not restricting carbohydrates enough Low-carb, high-protein diets are effective for fat loss. This is a scientific fact. But, lowcarb is a vague term and there isn’t a set figure for each person.

2.: Not weight training properly For fat loss you need to train fairly heavy with the intention of maintaining muscle and strength during fat loss phases.

3. Doing cardio instead of intervals or strongman Sprint training is a powerful fat loss tool that gives you back considerably more in terms of fat loss than the effort required.

4. A bad gut A poorly functioning gut is sure to inhibit fat loss efforts. The main culprits to look for are low stomach acid, bad bacteria and chronic inflammation 5. A nutrient deficiency There are numerous studies showing an association between greater body fat percentage and a vitamin D deficiency.

The same goes for other nutrients: low magnesium and fish oil intake are both linked with obesity.

6. Not sleeping enough The amount of sleep people need is very individualized, but lack of it mucks up all your fat loss efforts.

7. You’re stressed out all the time The effect of stress is often under-

appreciated for its role in fat loss. Chronic stress is one of the most important issues to address if you’re not losing fat.

8. A medical condition: anaemia or insulin resistance Medical issues such as anaemia. Low iron or low B12, both of which are extremely common deficiencies, lead to anaemia and limit fat loss.

9. Your meal frequency is off: low blood sugar Intermittent fasting is all the rage, but its not for everybody. You may experience much better fat loss results from eating 5 or 6 meals a day for more stable blood sugar management.

10. Something else…

• A sedentary lifestyle despite working out regularly.

• A blindspot in your diet. Are you vegetarian for example?

• Not eating real food.

• A high toxic load from NSAIDs, alcohol, BPA, or other chemicals.

The Year 6 rugby team (above, left) competed in the Tag to Twickenham Tournament at Chippping Sodbury RFC. Our team ‘battled’ against hail, wind, rain and sun, and some stiff competition from other primary schools across South Gloucestershire! Sadly, they didn’t qualify on this occasion, but it was a terrific experience for all the children – and also for the parents who came along to support us.

Children from Years 4, 5 & 6 (above, right) raced against schools from across Bristol in a cross country event at Colston’s School. Each Year Group had approximately 80 children competing and the amazing Rafael Ben Akiva finished in 8th position in the Year 4 race.
