fficers at South Gloucestershire Council are recommending that the temporary one-way traffic lights at Parkway railway bridge should remain in place for another 12 months, the Journal has learned.

Changes were made to the road layout under the bridge in June 2020 (during the first Covid-19 lockdown), creating a single lane for traffic, controlled by temporary traffic signals. The extra space created either side of the traffic lane is designated for people walking or cycling under the narrow bridge and is intended to allow them to keep a safe distance from each other, thereby “helping protect against coronavirus”.

Initially implemented for a two-week trial period, the scheme has now been in place for almost a year. With traffic levels increasing as schools and businesses have reopened, it has come under increased criticism from motorists who claim the restrictions are causing unnecessary delays to traffic.

An ‘engagement survey‘ (public consultation) was carried out by South Gloucestershire Council in September and October 2020. Of the 929 respondents, 65 percent said they “strongly disagreed” with keeping the proposals in place for the duration of the pandemic, while 79 percent “strongly disagreed” with making the changes permanent.

(arising from queueing vehicles) and the potential for emergency services’ vehicles to be delayed.

There is also frustration that, for most of the day, few pedestrians or cyclists are seen passing under the bridge and making use of the extra space.

Although seemingly forming a minority, those voicing support for the scheme say they feel much safer when walking under the bridge due to the wider path space and traffic separation barriers. They also point out that with traffic restricted to the centre of the tunnel there is no chance of double decker buses or other high vehicles striking the bridge, which has been an issue in the past.

In their report on the 2020 public consultation, council officers were dismissive of the results, stating that the respondents were not representative of the younger age groups most likely to walk or cycle under the bridge. They also claimed that respondents’ descriptions of traffic delays were “exaggerated” and said these were “more of a minor inconvenience”.

One frustrated local resident has started an online petition to have the traffic lights removed claiming they are adding considerably to [motorists’] travel times and are no longer necessary now that Covid-19 restrictions have eased.

Other local residents have taken to social media to demand that South Gloucestershire Council removes the scheme.

Bridge traffic control might stay for another year Continued from facing page

“As a council we are committed to providing a better, safer environment to encourage more people to choose active travel for leisure and commuting which will reduce traffic on our busiest routes. The Parkway Bridge has been a safety concern for some time and the scheme in place has helped make this route safer for people walking and cycling. Since its introduction, we have seen an increase in people walking and cycling here, including children travelling to and from school and been asked by local schools and colleges to install extra cycle parking to accommodate the increase.”

monitor traffic queues and usage of the scheme. We are also in regular contact with councillors and local representatives. While there is likely to be an increase in traffic once more businesses open up, the scheme offers positive encouragement and a safer environment for more people to commute using active transport.”

councillors are unanimous in calling for the current scheme to be removed, whilst at the same time pressing for the longer-term solution of building a second, parallel tunnel through the embankment, dedicated for use by pedestrians and cyclists.

Following a crunch meeting on Wednesday 26th May, Stoke Gifford councillor Ernie

Brown told the Journal: “Both South Glos lead and local ward councillors met today to receive a report from council officers on the recommendation of keeping the restrictions at the underpass in place for a further 12 months, and the effect the temporary lights are having on both queueing traffic and improved safety for users.”

“After a lengthy discussion and strong objection from local ward councillors to keeping the restrictions, it was agreed that officers should now undertake a complete appraisal of the traffic throughout the coming weeks to make an informed comparison to what was experienced pre-Covid.

This will provide members with a knowledgeable appraisal of the impact of the scheme.”

Plans submitted for new homes near Willow Brook

A

planning application has been submitted to build 21 new dwellings on one of the last remaining building plots in Bradley Stoke.

The proposed site is a vacant plot of land adjoining Hornbeam Close, directly opposite the Tesco filling station at the Willow Brook Centre.

The land, which is owned by South Gloucestershire Council (SGC), was originally designated to be used for a health centre, but the authorities later decided that there was no longer a requirement for this purpose, and it was subsequently put up for sale.

The adoption of SGC’s Policies, Sites and Places Plan in November 2017 finally saw the ‘healthcare’ allocation removed, paving the way for alternative uses to be seriously considered.

In 2018, SGC successfully bid for grant of £200k from the government’s Land Release Fund (LRF) to help bring forward a housing project on the land.

The plot was initially marketed as a possible self-build site, but due to a poor response it was decided to advertise it on the open market from May 2019, which resulted in some viable bids.

The scheme now put forward, by housing association LiveWest, comprises a terrace of nine family homes, a block of eleven ‘supported living’ apartments and a separate wheelchair-accessible

bungalow. The family homes will be for social rent tenure while the apartments will be for affordable rent tenure.

The terraced properties consist of seven two-storey two-bed homes and two three-storey three-bed homes, all with private gardens. All the homes have one on-plot parking space; the three-bed properties additionally incorporate a garage.

The ‘supported living’ apartments, intended for tenants with learning difficulties, are each one-bed and the block also incorporates some communal space. The two-bed bungalow shares a communal garden with the apartments.

Eight parking spaces are provided for the apartments and bungalow. The site has five unallocated/visitor parking bays, bring the total number of parking spaces up to 24.

The applicant admits that the scheme’s parking provision does not meet SGC’s design policy but argues that the town centre location and the fact that people with learning disabilities “generally do not drive” can justify the shortfall.

Vehicular access to the site will be via an extension of Hornbeam Close, i.e. off Savages Wood Road. The proposal includes an option for gated pedestrian/cycle access to the access road of the Willow Brook Centre, but it is stated that this would need the

agreement of the landowner.

SGC declined to say how much it expects to raise from the sale of the land, adding that no decision has yet been made on how the £200k LRF grant will be spent.

A council spokesperson said: “Grant funding will be made available to help facilitate a 100 percent affordable housing scheme including the provision and higher specification of accommodation required for a supported living scheme.”

Several neighbours have raised objections to the application citing concerns over the plan to access the site through Hornbeam Close, which they say already suffers from a lack of parking provision.

Concerns are also expressed about the need for heavy vehicles to pass through Hornbeam Close during the construction phase.

Bradley Stoke Town Council has also objected on the grounds of “overdevelopment of the site and insufficient parking provision”.

Debbie and Treacle reappear at Manor Farm

By Sara Messenger of Bradley Stoke in Bloom (BSiB) he weather has been so miserable, but I’m determined not to be, so…

The ‘new’ calf Debbie and her faithful doggy companion Treacle have finally made their way out of their winter barn (cardboard box on my living room floor) and into the warm spring air in the Manor Farm field (roundabout).

After the last ones were stolen BSiB had no plans to replace them, but our Bradley Stoke town councillors had other ideas and bought two replacements. We did have several awfully long discussions on how to concrete them in, however, due to their compact size and composition, this just wasn’t feasible, but they are very securely attached!

Treacle and the owl had once belonged to Connie, but via her son Alan were passed down to her granddaughter Gillian

have appeared which unlike their feathered counterparts seem determined to hide from their ‘parents’ Donald and Daisy and the first five minutes of the day is always spent trying to workout where they are today. We have also had a pair of real mallards here and we are hoping that they might make it their home.

It was several years ago that we had our first ever brood at the pond, so we are hoping that with some encouragement and regular treats of porridge oats and peas, they might just stay.

on the roundabout, Gillian has donated some of her homegrown sunflower seeds, even offering to water them should this relentless rain ever let up and many of them have been planted both on the roundabout and on the corner flowerbed nearby.

The other half have, with Gill’s permission, been donated to the Girl Guides, who have been challenged with planting sunflowers as part of their South West England region’s golden anniversary. We have also left our Brook Way wishing tree in place for them as following the success of their peace dove tree, they hope to turn this into a Golden Guiding Tree.

Our pond on The Common East has had some new additions and visitors, three plastic ducklings

The bank at Primrose Bridge has also brightened up, with the daffodils and primroses we planted making a welcome return.

On the other side, we have again cleared the ever-encroaching bramble, planted primroses and re-barked the path from Lapwing Close. On the reserve side we have, in cooperation with Green Gym, been turning this into a bee and butterfly bank. This month, we added 21 crab apple & spindle trees, over 20 bee-friendly plug plants and two boxes of seeds.

You may spot under some of the plants some flat stones.

These have two benefits; one it keeps the encroaching grass down, and two it reflects just the right amount of heat to warm the butterfly eggs that can be found under the leaf.

Gipsy Patch Lane: Highway works intensify east of railway bridge

F

work began on 4th May and will continue, through several stages, until July. Temporary traffic lights are in use, restricting the road to single-file traffic along Gipsy Patch Lane between the Stokers pub and the eastbound dual carriageway section of Gipsy Patch Lane.

On the south side of the road, Western Power Distribution (WPD) has begun work to divert a major power cable. The council says this work will allow it to plant as many replacement trees as possible following the felling of 20 semi-mature trees earlier this year. This work, which involves digging a trench and laying a new cable and duct in it, section by section, is on schedule to be completed in early June.

Highway works on the north side of Gipsy Patch Lane (east of bridge) in May

Water will be diverting a major water pipe. This will follow on from the work being undertaken

by WPD and will involve digging a trench and installing a new pipe. The work was scheduled to begin on 1st June and last approximately eight weeks until the end of July, with working hours from 8am to 5pm, proceeding east to west in stages.

Along Smithcourt Drive, the new pipe will be laid in sections

of between 50-75 metres in the carriageway for approximately four weeks from 1st June, with road remaining accessible. From the corner of Gipsy Patch Lane and Bush Avenue to the Stokers pub car park, a road closure will be required, however, access will be maintained for residents and patrons of the pub. This phase of the works is planned to start from 28th June and will last for approximately four weeks.

ollowing the frustrating news revealed in our last issue that the railway bridge at Gipsy Patch Lane may not reopen to motorised traffic until December (and then only one way), the last month has seen a slew of announcements relating to highway works east of the bridge, between the junctions with Little Stoke Lane and Station Road.

Construction work to upgrade two existing bus stops to MetroBus specification, which required a westbound road closure, was completed in early May. The new shelters and iPoints will be installed later.

Back on the north side, a temporary traffic regulation order has been published for an anticipated two-month closure of Gifford Crescent starting on 5th July. The closure is required for the installation of highway drainage attenuation pipes in the triangular grassed verge area adjacent to Gifford Crescent.

Further details will be made available nearer the time.

The council has recently announced that temporary wooden fencing is to be installed during August in the southern verge of Gipsy Patch Lane, along the length of the ‘east of bridge’

work area. This is being done “to provide some aesthetic screening from the construction works”.

An outline programme of work being carried out at the railway bridge itself is shown in the panel on the right.

Additionally, Network Rail will be carrying out further planned work to pack stone under the tracks (tamping) overnight on 12th/13th June and 7th/8th August. Epic awards as face-to-face activities return at 1st Bradley Stoke Scouts

By Nick Nelson, group chair, 1st Bradley Stoke Scouts t has been a hugely different year than we expected, but face-to-face Scouting is now returning to 1st Bradley Stoke Scout Group with both Cubs and Scouts getting outside, getting wet and getting muddy – against the principle that there is no such thing as unsuitable weather, just unsuitable clothing! During the pandemic, we have continued to deliver the programme and ensured something different to schoolbased work, with virtual activities, fun and games. In this article, we want to recognise some of the fantastic efforts of our young people and adult volunteers

during this period.

Firstly, Damon and Nathan, two Scouts from Wednesday ‘Jaguars’ Scout troop, completed their GOLD Chief Scouts Award.

This is the highest award that can be earned as a Scout and reflects four years of effort across a range of activities including camping, hiking, team working, creativity and leading others.

They are an example to all of our young people and will continue to provide that as young leaders, having moved up to Explorers and started their Duke of Edinburgh award. Good luck to both of you!

Dan Shadbolt, our deputy group Scout leader & assistant district commissioner for Scouts, was presented not only with a Chief Scout’s Commendation for Good Service but also his

third set of Wood Beads on the completion of his commissioner training. That really is epic! And quite properly it was on a windy and rainy evening that he was presented with his award, whilst hiking with the Thursday (Lions) troop.

And John Morris, section leader of the ‘Cheetahs’ Cub pack on Mondays was surprised to be awarded his five-year long service award and remarked that it felt like ten! We are sure he didn’t mean it, although we have some pictures when he joined looking a little younger!

The Only Cure O for Litter is YOU KEEP Bradley Stoke

By Amy, BSZeroCCG n 18th April and 23rd May, the Bradley Stoke Zero Carbon Community Group (BSZeroCCG) joined up with Community Litter Pick Bradley Stoke to host some Sunday morning litter picks.

With bags, gloves, hoops and litter pickers all at the ready, a quick socially distanced health and safety talk, and then we were off. On Sunday 23rd May we had 17 people come along which meant four teams were working their way around Bradley Stoke.

The youngest member of the team was just 8 weeks old, so you’re never too young or too old to come and join in. The teams have been covering areas in north Bradley Stoke but will be aiming to cover central Bradley Stoke next time.

A large number of blue council bags were filled and placed next to bins to be collected by the council. Some members also volunteered to take items which could be recycled home to put out with their own recycling. One member described how getting out on regular litter pick has not only given her the feel good factor and improved her mental health, but has also had the added benefit of helping her to lose weight with the miles she is now doing around the local area.

Joining the litter pick, the bonus for me is that I get to do something small for our local community, our British wildlife and I also get the pleasure of meeting some very lovely local residents. Just about all of whom I had never met before. Bradley

Stoke Zero Carbon Community Group received funding from the town council and is using that funding to improve our local area and involve more residents to take up a greener way of life.

South Gloucestershire Council also provided litter pickers, gloves, bag hoops and blue council rubbish bags so more residents can get involved even if they don’t have equipment.

If you were one of the passersby who thanked us with a wave, a car horn beep or a call out, we are grateful for the encouragement.

Hopefully the event will continue to grow each month, especially

as the weather improves. So if you are noticing more litter and would like to make a small difference but still have a big impact, come and join the team.

We are hoping to run a Sunday morning litter pick on the third Sunday of each month.

You are the only cure for litter.

Luke’s memory honoured at charity football match

T

he memory of a former student at Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS), who tragically lost his life in an explosion at a Wessex Water treatment works in Avonmouth last year, has been honoured at a charity football match held at the school.

Sixteen-year-old Luke Wheaton had started an apprenticeship with Wessex Water just months before the tragedy, after leaving BSCS at the end of his Year 11 studies. Three other workers also lost their lives in the incident.

The match, played on Wednesday 26th May, was a special renewal of the annual BSCS Year 11 Leavers’ game, contested between representatives of the 11BGO and 11PRY year groups.

It was attended by Luke’s parents, Matt and Paula, who were presented with the no. 6 football shirt that had been worn

by Luke when playing for the school. The shirt had been signed

by Luke’s classmates and set in a frame which will soon be hung in the reception area at the school.

To further honour Luke’s memory, the school has decided that, going forward, none of its football teams will field a player in a no. 6 shirt.

The match was played in aid of the Luke Wheaton Legacy Trust, which has been set up by members of Luke’s family and friends, the school, Bradley Stoke Youth FC, North Bristol RFC and Stoke Lane Athletic FC, with the support of Wessex Water, as these were all important aspects of Luke’s life. The Trust fund will support children and young people in various hardships to help them enjoy sport within those clubs and also to support young people in following vocational education and apprenticeships.

A one-minute clap was staged before the start of the game.

RFC where he managed to get into the Bristol Bears Development U12 and U13s teams.

Luke joined Stoke Lane AFC when he was 15, playing for the U18 Colts, but only managed a few games due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. The team have since made good on a pledge to win their league ‘undefeated’, in honour of Luke.

A fundraising page set up by Stoke Lane AFC raised £23,717 to help for costs of the funerals for all the families that lost their loved ones in the Avonmouth tragedy.

D

uring the pandemic I know I have put a lot of my own and my family’s routine healthcare issues on the backburner to concentrate on work. Just coping with all the new changes in our daily routines seems pretty enormous at the moment, and life is hectic with even small things taking longer with having to remember to bring masks, sanitise your hands every few minutes, and follow one way systems round shops. That said, I am normally pretty organised, so I was a bit embarrassed to be getting a second reminder letter for my own smear test (which is now booked, I am pleased to say).

Smear tests remain a very effective way of preventing cervical cancer, and it is very important to not ignore the call if you are invited. The invitations are routinely sent out to everyone who has a cervix

between the ages of 25 and 64, at 3 yearly intervals from 25 to 49 years then every 5 years if there have been no previous issues detected. The test now focuses mainly on looking for

worry they need to tell partners (they don’t), or that it might be a sign of someone being unfaithful in a relationship (it isn’t), so hopefully some reassurance will be all that is needed. With the introduction of the HPV vaccines to schoolchildren in 2008, we hope the rates of cervical cancer will drop even more and that we can improve detection and treatment at early stages with new innovations that may come in such as self-testing for HPV. For now though, if you get your letter for your smear, please call us to book it in, despite the pandemic we have been and are still offering appointments for these vital screening tests.

Design selected for £105k play area redevelopment Exciting new facility to be installed over the summer, replacing “tired” equipment that has been there for over 26 years

A

popular but dated play area within the grounds of one of Bradley Stoke Town Council’s three activity centres is to be refreshed with an exciting range of new equipment after councillors selected a contractor for the £105k project.

The play park at Baileys Court Activity Centre has been in use for over 26 years, but council officers say the equipment has become “tired” and spare parts are becoming harder to source.

Following a formal tendering process which saw nine companies submit bids for the work, the contract for the project has been awarded to Kompan, a multinational supplier of playground equipment with a UK base in Milton Keynes.

Council officers set a design brief that called for the park to accommodate as many children as possible and to consider inclusive and accessible pieces of play equipment, and as a result the agreed proposal caters for up to 95 children with 40 play activities.

A report states: “The design has provided a wide assortment of different play experiences for a wider range of abilities and ages, children have the option of playing alone or with friends on the see-saw and multi play units. Kompan have catered for the needs of children/young people with disabilities plus the inclusion of adults and carers with disabilities.”

It had been hoped that a wheelchair accessible swing or roundabout could be included, but in the end, this was deemed impractical considering the small size of the site. Councillors will instead discuss the future possibility of placing such equipment in the Beacon Play Area at Jubilee Green, where there is more space.

It is planned that the work will be carried out during the school holidays, starting on 23rd July and completing by 26th August.

Why is a healthy lifestyle so important?

oday, people, in general, have a longer life expectancy. It is important to look after all aspects of our wellness. There are a variety of ways to improve your health through a healthy diet, mental and physical exercise and more. It is never too late to start making positive changes.

Even at a younger age, a lack of physical activity and regular exercise, as well as a poor diet, can contribute towards high blood pressure, heart disease and heart attacks and a poor health-related quality of life.

For us to really appreciate the value of a healthy lifestyle as older adults, we need to acknowledge the changes that occur within us as we age.

It is important to have healthy eating habits. As we age, our metabolism slows down and our sense of smell and taste, which can affect your appetite, changes. Choose a diet that is high in fibre, vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean protein.

Make your food taste and look good to encourage your appetite.

Eating properly will help to maintain a healthy weight and skeleton, which decreases your risk of certain types of illness.

Be sure to hydrate even when you do not feel thirsty.

Exercise is the number one contributor to longevity. If you have not been exercising before, it’s never too late to start.

Meet the new mayor: Councillor Michael Hill

C

ouncillor Michael Hill has been elected as mayor of Bradley Stoke for the civic year 2021-22. He was formally handed the chain of office on Wednesday 26th May at Bradley Stoke Town Council’s annual meeting, held at Brook Way Activity Centre.

Michael was born and educated in north London.

He started his working life at a weekly newspaper before moving on to become a press officer at London Transport.

He spent most of his career on media duties with the Ministry of Defence. At different times, he was head of public relations at the Royal Air Force Headquarters at High Wycombe and latterly at the Royal Navy’s Fleet Headquarters at Northwood. His travels took him from Hong Kong to the Falkland Islands and from the West Indies to the Persian Gulf.

Michael started his political innings at the London Borough of Barnet in 1974 and served as a councillor there for 12 years. Afterwards, he moved to Northampton and served

on Northampton Borough Council for 18 years, where he was mayor in 2009-10. He also served for four years as a Northamptonshire county councillor, from 2005 to 2009.

Michael and his wife Margaret moved to Bradley Stoke in 2017 and live near Baileys Court. He can often be seen walking his cockapoo ‘Poppy’ in the area.

Michael’s other interests include railways, photography and football. He also enjoys travelling and was very fond of exploring the natural landscapes of Switzerland.

Representing the Bradley Stoke South ward, Michael was elected to the town council in May 2019 and served as vice-chair last year.

His mayoral charities for 2021-22 are Dogs for Good, which is a life-transforming national charity, creating partnerships between people living with disability and specially trained assistance dogs; and St Peter’s Hospice, a local charity that provides care and support to adults who are living with a progressive life-limiting illness.

We wish Cllr Hill a very happy and successful year in office.

News Wise Owls welcomes children back with a visit to the farm

Luci Walker, director of Bradley Stoke Wise Owls Club writes: As part of our exciting half term holiday activities, Wise Owls visited Old Green Farm Dairy in Alveston. The children had a fascinating time, first watching how the cows were milked by the robot milking machines to then making their own milkshakes from the milk that had just been collected by the robots!

It was a really interactive experience for the children. Now they know where milk comes from and how it is processed rather than just thinking it comes from a shop or out of the fridge! Town council seats go to independent and Conservative candidates

B

y-elections for two vacant seats on Bradley Stoke Town Council have been won by one independent and one Conservative candidate.

The North ward by-election was won by independent candidate Angela Morey, ahead of Eugenia Ntekor (Conservative) and Labour’s Anthony Oliver.

Successful in the two-way contest for the South ward seat was Edward He (Conservative), ahead of Labour’s Dayley Lawrence.

The by-elections took place on 6th May, the same day as elections for the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner (A&S PCC) and the West of England ‘metro mayor’ (see page 3).

By-election turnout was 32.4

percent in the North ward and 30.2 percent in the South ward.

The North ward seat was previously held by Elaine Hardwick, elected as an independent in May 2019 but later transferring to a new political party she had formed, The Citizens Movement Party UK. She resigned in January 2021 after moving away from South Gloucestershire.

The South ward seat was previously held by Nikki Hallur (Conservative) who resigned in January 2020, just eight months after being elected.

The by-election results leaves the political make-up of Bradley Stoke Town Council little changed, with 12 Conservative, one Labour and two independent members.

School praised for pupil support during lockdown

A

local primary school previously deemed in need of improvement has been praised by an Ofsted inspector for “taking effective action to provide education” during the coronavirus pandemic.

Stoke Lodge Primary School was rated ‘requires improvement’

by Ofsted in September 2016, shortly after joining the Olympus Academy Trust and then again in January 2019.

The 2019 Ofsted report criticised the school for not tackling issues identified for improvement at the previous inspection quickly enough and highlighted poor progress for Year 6 pupils in English and mathematics. However, it praised the ‘good’ Early Years provision and the quality of teaching in Key Stage 1.

The latest Ofsted report, issued following a monitoring inspection conducted remotely in March,

finds that headteacher Will Ferris (appointed in September 2019) has “worked effectively alongside the trust to raise expectations and aspirations of both pupil and staff”.

The report acknowledges that the school ensured that all pupils were able to access the curriculum during the national lockdown in spring 2021 and the extra support that has been provided for vulnerable pupils

returning to on-site learning.

Looking forward, the inspector concurs with the headteacher’s view that “some aspects of subject leaders’ work need strengthening”.

In a letter to parents, Olympus CEO Dave Baker expressed frustration that the modified form of the March inspection didn’t allow an opportunity to change the school’s overall judgement to ‘good’.

Mr Baker thanked Mr Ferris for “his leadership at Stoke Lodge and for the way his staff team has transformed the experience for the school’s pupils in the last two years.”

The Parent View survey on the Ofsted website shows that 90 percent of parents would currently recommend Stoke Lodge to other parents, up from just 33 percent in 2017/18.

As we went to press, we learned that Stoke Lodge had unexpectedly received a further Ofsted Section 8 monitoring inspection, this time on-site, on Wednesday 12th May. The report is still awaited but Mr Baker reports that “positive feedback” was received from the inspector.

He added: “It is likely that they will return for a third time in the first half of next academic year, at which time we are hopeful that Stoke Lodge will be judged to be a ‘good’ school.”

By Sarah Nutchey, Kumon Bradley Stoke imes of adversity often bring moments of opportunity. As we gradually emerge from lockdown, many of us are now reflecting on what’s actually important to us. For much of the last year, the team at Kumon Bradley Stoke have been working more closely with students on their ‘home schooling’ and more than ever we are aware of their strengths and weaknesses.

Students at the Bradley Stoke Kumon Centre are celebrating their progress and achievements over the last year, despite the challenges of lockdown and home schooling. Since the first lockdown in March 2020, students have been studying Kumon each day at home and meeting Sarah Nutchey, their Kumon Instructor, on weekly Zoom sessions.

Nura began her Kumon study in January 2020, and started attending Kumon classes at the Willow Brook Centre initially, before the national lockdown required the classes to move online. Her parents enrolled her on the maths programme in order to enrich her maths knowledge, having seen a positive impact of the programme for her older sibling. Her mother acknowledged that the past year has been challenging, and that there were some days

when Nura didn’t feel like doing anything but that she always completed her booklets of work.

Sometimes it took a while for Nura to grasp a new concept but once she’d had enough practice she was brilliant. Over the course of her Kumon study to date, Nura has progressed from basic mental addition work to short multiplication, and is now working almost 2 years ahead of her age. As a result of her daily Kumon maths practice, Nura said that home school lessons were “so easy!”

Prithiv loves maths; it is his favourite subject. His parents enrolled him in the Kumon maths programme in October 2020 because they wanted him to have a solid foundation in all the basic calculation skills and they liked the daily worksheet approach.

Kumon work has become part of his daily routine and he is very motivated to complete each level of the programme. Prithiv was really delighted to find out that he had recently reached the Advanced Student Roll, working above his age. Kumon provides him with a challenge which he really enjoys. He said:”I like Kumon because it helps me to improve. I like to do homework sheets at home every day. I look forward to achievement tests to show off my learning so far.”

Dhruvi started studying both Kumon Maths and Kumon English in October 2020. Her

parents decided to enrol her into the programmes because they wanted to get her into the discipline of a good daily study routine. She started with basic addition in maths and basic sentence structure in English and made rapid progress because she was willing to do extra booklets each day. Her mother said that the Kumon practice really helped Dhruvi with mental strategies for addition and subtraction and she is now very speedy with her calculations.

Dhruvi commented: “Kumon has made complex mental maths easier and enjoyable for me.”

Within six months, Dhruvi was studying ahead of her school age in both subjects, tackling long multiplication and long division in maths and working with complex sentence analysis in English. She loves reading and has a great vocabulary and is

enjoying being ahead at school.

Melissa was already ahead in maths at school when she enrolled in Kumon in October 2020. Her mother, who works for the NHS, wanted her to achieve her potential and aim for grammar school entry.

Melissa did extra booklets each day and made a flying start, increasing her speed and fluency with mental maths. Her mother said she has definitely seen an improvement because now Melissa doesn’t have to

think about the sums, she just knows the answers. She has been brilliant at getting on with her work and has great support at home.
