he results of a public consultation on proposed capacity improvements at a major roundabout on the border between Bradley Stoke and Stoke Gifford will not be released until just one week before a funding decision is made on the £2.3m scheme, the Journal can reveal.

In response to our enquiry, an SGC spokesperson said: “Earlier this year, the West of England Combined Authority (Weca) approved an outline business case for a preferred scheme to increase vehicle capacity and reduce queuing times at Great Stoke Roundabout in Stoke Gifford. We ran a public consultation, including several

drop-in sessions during February and March 2019, and invited people to fill in a questionnaire about the proposed scheme.”

“Following this feedback, a full business case has been submitted to Weca and we are expecting a decision on the future funding of this scheme in October. The results of the public consultation will be published a week prior to the Weca decision.”

“Following the funding decision from Weca, we will be in a position to confirm a start date for the main work and the traffic management which will be in place during the scheme.”

gents acting on behalf of Bradley Stoke’s Willow Brook shopping centre have lodged an appeal against South Gloucestershire Council’s decision to refuse planning permission for two new drivethrough food and drink units (foreseen to be occupied by McDonald’s and Starbucks) and two new retail units at the town centre site.

The controversial planning application, submitted in March 2018, was first denied permission by the local authority’s Development Management Committee in February 2019 and then again in March 2019 by the higher-level Spatial Planning Committee.

Officers at South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) had originally recommended that the application be approved, but it was ‘called in’ for a decision to be made by council members.

With one of the proposed food drink units being located only 22m from the nearest residential property in Wheatfield Drive at its closet point, councillors decided there would be “prejudicial impact on residential amenity due to noise, general disturbance, fumes, smells, and late night activity”.

They also said the proposals “failed to promote the economic, social and environmental character of the area”.

News of the appeal surfaced in early July when a Planning Inspectorate appeal application form dated 28th June 2019 appeared on the council’s planning portal.

The appellant originally requested that the appeal be determined by way of a hearing, and the case officer at the

Planning Inspectorate initially announced that this would indeed be the procedure used.

However, in a letter dated 7th August, she explained that, after further consideration, the alternative procedure of ‘written representations’ would now be used as a hearing could not be justified, stating: “… although there are a lot of interested parties, the issues are not particularly complicated and the council have indicated that they will not be submitting anything very technical, therefore a hearing is not justified and this appeal will now proceed by way of written representation…”

A deadline of 21st August was set for interested people and organisations to submit written representations for consideration by the inspector.

In its ‘statement of case’ the appellant rejects the grounds of refusal and argues that the proposed food and drink units would “have an acceptable relationship with nearby housing so as to avoid any negative impacts based on noise or odour”.

The statement adds that a condition restricting the opening hours of the food units to 6am11pm for Starbucks and 6ammidnight (Sun-Thu) / 6am-1am (Fri & Sat) for McDonald’s would be acceptable if the inspector considered this would “serve a purpose in limiting disturbance”.

Now that the submissions deadline has passed, the appellant and the local planning authority (SGC) have until 4th September to comment on the representations received.

In a further development, objectors to the scheme have been angered by the submission, within days of the appeal on the main case being announced, of two new planning applications that relate to advertising signage on and around the proposed McDonald’s restaurant.

Objection comments submitted by members of the public claim the latest applications are “confusing” and “putting the cart before the horse”, with one asking if the council “knows something we don’t”. Bradley Stoke Town Council has also weighed in, saying the applications “don’t make sense” as there is currently

no building to attach the signage to. The town council has asked local South Gloucestershire ward councillors to ‘call in’ the applications, in view of “the impact of illuminated signage on local residential properties”. ● Application references for advertising signage: P19/09453/ ADV and P19/09456/ADV

rovisional plans for a new Aldi, Premier Inn, Costa and gym (The Gym Group) in Stoke Gifford are being consulted on ahead of a possible planning application being made in the coming weeks.

Aviva Investors, which owns the vacant site next to Sainsbury’s and between Fox Den Road and Great Stoke Way, says it has been working on the plans for the last four years.

The proposals were made public in early August when residents living near the development site were sent a letter and site plan (see facing page) with an invitation to provide feedback in an informal consultation.

Helen Rainsford, senior real estate director at Aviva Investors, said: “We are delighted to progress these proposals, which will help serve the growing community, existing employment and passing trade from Parkway.”

“We did explore a number of different options, including residential and student,

employment and retail. The initial feedback has been really positive, especially for the Aldi.

With parking being an issue in the area, we have been mindful not to exacerbate the situation and make the site accessible to pedestrians and cyclists.”

There are also plans, still subject to confirmation, to give a presentation to Stoke Gifford Parish Council at a scheduled meeting of its Planning and Transportation Committee on Tuesday 24th September. The meeting takes place at Little Stoke Community Hall, Little Stoke Park, starting at 7pm.

Subject to feedback, a planning application could be submitted “in the next month” and Aviva Investors says it hopes the new facilities will be open by early 2021 (subject to receiving planning consent).

News Update on the 2,600+ new homes coming to the Stokes

A

nyone who has driven along the A4174 Ring Road between Abbey Wood and Hambrook recently can’t failed to have noticed the plethora of housing developer signs that have sprung up along the northern edge of the road, with Crest Nicholson and Linden Homes telling us that some new development is ‘Coming soon’ and urging us to ‘Register now’.

Journal readers will be aware from previous articles that 2,000 new homes are to be built on either side of the Stoke Gifford By-Pass, which links Parkway North with the Ring Road. This development is known as the ‘East of Harry Stoke (EoHS) New Neighbourhood’, where the houses are currently planned to be completed between 2020 and 2026, subject to further planning approvals and S106 agreements.

This is in addition to the 1,200 new homes earmarked over a decade ago for an adjoining area further to the west known as ‘Land at Harry Stoke’ (LaHS).

Here, just 166 units of the approved housing quota have so far been delivered – at Crest Nicholson’s Highbrook Park development.

Little has happened on the ground for the last couple of years, but that all changed in July when excavators began work in earnest on land between Westfield Way and Highbrook Park. The Journal understands that this activity is associated with the construction of a new access road that the developers are contractually obliged to provide before the 200th home can be occupied on the LaHS site, suggesting that house building might be about to resume.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Crest Nicholson has been urging South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) to move towards making a decision on its reserved matters (detailed) planning application to build 763 homes on the west-most part of the LaHS site, bordering Harry Stoke Road.

As previously reported, the land here was recently acquired by Crest Nicholson, who went on to submit a swathe of revised drawings in November 2018, angering local residents who claim the new plans are no longer compliant with design codes associated with the outline planning permission granted back in 2007.

Describing the latest proposals as “a modern, urban design with some tall blocks and a cramped layout”, the objectors argue that this clashes with the traditional and locally listed buildings in the historic hamlet of Harry Stoke. They have also raised concerns over an alleged over-concentration of affordable housing towards the southern end of the site and along part of the ‘rural edge’ along Harry Stoke Road.

Eighteen of the residents have now grouped together to investigate the possibility of taking legal action by using the services of a planning expert solicitor, in an effort to “achieve a better development on [their] doorstep”.

A reserved matters application for 263 homes on the third parcel of land within LaHS was made

by Crest Nicholson in December 2017. This lies to the south of the already-built Highbrook Park development, bordering the Ring Road. The SGC planning portal records no recent activity in connection with this application although it is noted that a recent housing supply report published by SGC foresees the first houses on this site being delivered in 2022, subject to the undergrounding of power lines.

A recent development concerning the EoHS New Neighbourhood saw an SGC committee meeting being brought forward by two weeks in July, to resolve legal technicalities that were blocking progress on an S106 agreement associated with Crest Nicholson’s ‘land south of the railway’ site.

“Outstanding” Post-16 exam results at BSCS

B

radley Stoke Community School (BSCS) students are celebrating another outstanding set of Post-16 results, with 32 percent of all grades awarded being at A*-A and 62 percent A*-B. Students have made more progress between their GCSE and Post-16 results than ever before, says the school.

As always, there are some outstanding individual performances, including:

• Emma Draper who achieved 1A* (art) and 2As (history & psychology) who is taking a gap year next year.

• Jess Lomax who achieved 2A*s (politics & sociology) and 1B (English literature) and is leaving to study politics at the London School of Economics.

• Lauren Hicks who achieved 1A* (EPQ), 2As (chemistry & maths) and 1B (biology) and is going to study medicine at the University of Nottingham.

• Ryan Edwards who achieved 1A* (biology) and 2As (maths & physics) and will be at the University of Exeter studying civil engineering.

• Sim Ashford who achieved 1Dist* (music technology), 1A (maths) and 1B (physics) who is travelling to Australia as part of a gap year next year.

The average grade per entry has increased from a C grade to a B grade this year and there were some particularly stand out results in the following subjects: • 50 percent of grades in maths were A*-A • 67 percent of grades in chemistry were A*-B • 65 percent of grades in business and art were A*-B Headteacher Steve Moir expressed his pride in the students’ achievements: “Our students worked incredibly hard and showed real resilience and commitment to achieve these results. I would also like to extend my thanks to our dedicated staff, who always set high standards and have provided our young people with every opportunity to fulfil their potential. We would like to wish everyone receiving their results today every success whatever they choose to do next.”

Assistant headteacher and director of Post-16, Tom Hill, was delighted with the spectacular results. “These results have come as a direct result and reward of the relentless commitment and effort that students and staff have put in over the past two years. In Brief Raised speed table for Bowsland Way The existing zebra crossing on Bowsland Way, Bradley Stoke, between the junctions of Honeysuckle Close and Tresham Close, is to be modified to incorporate a raised speed table.

The decision follows analysis of the responses to a public consultation staged between 17th June and 8th July.

The consultation feedback report shows that of the 32 individuals and organisations that responded to the consultation via the questionnaire, 78 percent said they were in favour of the scheme as a whole.

The scheme will now be forwarded to the council’s legal team for them to arrange advertisement of the necessary Traffic Regulation Order (TRO).

Honours and farewells at 1st BS Scouts’ AGM

P

arents, youngsters and adult volunteers gathered at Brook Way Activity Centre on Wednesday 10th July for the Annual General Meeting and family BBQ of 1st Bradley Stoke Scouts.

As well as the usual elements of the AGM, bringing together the Scout Council to agree the annual report, thank Dunkley’s for auditing the accounts and nominate members of the executive to run the group, they celebrated a number of awards for young people and adults alike.

The Bronze, Silver and Gold Chief Scout Awards are the highest badges in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts respectively and represent work undertaken during their entire time in each of the sections (between two and four years). Amongst the adult volunteers, group fundraiser and active support unit manager Belinda Hodgson and group chair

Nick Nelson received District Commissioner Awards from Clive Mason for their contribution over a number of years.

Clive himself had recently left as group scout leader on “promotion” to district commissioner, after ten years service, and the group presented him with a number of gifts, including an engraved torch (Ed: it’s a Scout thing!).

The evening was rounded off with the family BBQ, giving young and old the chance to get to know each other across the sections, as well as meet leaders, especially important for those ‘moving up’ to higher sections later in the year.

Churches ask: “What does Bradley Stoke need?”

he churches in Bradley Stoke want to make a difference in this community. Over the weekend of the Community Festival in June, we conducted a short survey to find out what people thought about Bradley Stoke, what they felt the town needed and if they could think of anything that the churches might be able to do for the community. We promised to feedback the results…

dance club, more for the elderly, youth clubs, children’s clubs, toddler groups, cooking classes, a car mechanic, disability play equipment, more independent shops, including a butcher and a greengrocer, a greater police presence, a cinema, a water park and even a theme park!

What do people like about Bradley Stoke?

The shopping area, the people, community spirit and accessible amenities. People felt it was a great place for families.

Is there anything the church could do for Bradley Stoke?

People were appreciative of what the churches are doing but would like to see more toddler groups, children’s and teenagers’ clubs, cafés and opportunities for people to meet people, to provide a listening service and link people with other community services.

What does Bradley Stoke need?

M1 MetroBus off-peak frequency to be reduced from 1st September

afternoon peak times, but First West of England says there is a significant drop off in passengers outside of these times. To better reflect this pattern of demand, from 1st September, the Monday to Friday off-peak and Saturday daytime frequency will be reduced from ‘every 10 minutes’ to ‘every 12 minutes’. At the same time, the Monday to Saturday evening frequency will be reduced from ‘every 10 minutes’ to ‘every 20 minutes’, with the transition in frequency taking place between 7pm and 8pm.

On a more positive note, on Sundays and public holidays, the M1 service will start operating two hours earlier, at 7am, and

run every 30 minutes between 7am and 9am.

Prior to the introduction of the M1 service, First initially said that it would be axing its existing peak-hours-only X73 service once the M1 started. It later changed its mind and the X73 was retained, albeit with one fewer journey each day and rebranded as the T3.

Having operated the T3 service for over six months, First has concluded that the service is not commercially viable and has announced its withdrawal from 1st September.

A spokesperson said: “While providing some unique sections of route, the T3 duplicates or operates close to other services, such as the 73, T1 and M1. Since the introduction of the T1 and M1, we have seen a number of customers transfer over from other services, as they offer more direct journeys to and from the city centre and at a much higher frequency. The majority of customers currently using service T3 will be able to use services 73, T1 or M1 to complete their journeys after 1st September.”

Finally starting operations in January 2019, more than three years after major roadworks began in Bradley Stoke to create the necessary infrastructure for the route, the M1 service has been required to run every 10 minutes through the day on weekdays, in order to meet the service levels set out in the MetroBus Quality Partnership Scheme.

Teenagers complete ‘end to end’ charity ride

T

hree Year 13 students from Bradley Stoke have completed the “challenge of a lifetime” by completing a 1,000-mile charity cycle ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats (known to enthusiasts as LEJOG) in just 16 days.

Scott Warburton (aged 18), Ryan Edwards (18) and Alessandro Bufalino (17) made the epic journey in July, a few weeks after finishing their final Post-16 exams at Bradley Stoke Community School.

And as if the end-to-end challenge wasn’t enough in itself, the trio chose to eschew the use of high-spec road bikes and complete the ride on folding bikes, thereby making their achievement “as unique as possible”.

Scott and Ryan had some prior experience of long distance bike rides, through cycling the 300 miles from Land’s End to Bradley Stoke back in 2017, raising £1,153 for Cancer Research UK. They chose to raise money for a cancer charity because immediate members of both their families have been affected by the disease.

This time, joined by Alessandro, they decided to fundraise for both St Peter’s Hospice and Cancer Research UK. To date, they have raised an incredible £2,537.50 (including gift aid), meaning that £1,268.75 is going to each charity.

Planning for the adventure started on the day they finished their last A-level exam. They

took time to choose a route that avoided lots of the busy roads and booked a varied range of overnight accommodation ranging from rooms above pubs to glamping!

The cyclists were supported throughout the challenge by three friends (Nils Rehm, Laurence Earley and Michael Curtis) who travelled the route in cars, transporting baggage and arranging meal stops.

Scott said: “The trip was one of my greatest achievements in life. We love exploring and challenging ourselves and this ride certainly did that! We had such a great time and made lots of memories along the way, which we will remember forever.

I’m proud of our team for our

determination in never giving up, despite the many challenges that were thrown at us.”

Ryan said: “I would describe the trip as the most physically demanding challenge I’ve ever undertaken. At first, we were all concerned that we were being slightly over ambitious. The cheap folding bikes were hardly designed for longer distances, let alone over 1,000 miles. We’re really glad that we managed to

complete the ride so smoothly, and with only three punctures. It was a really enriching experience to be able to see the entire length of the country, from south to north, witnessing spectacular views and iconic landmarks (such as the Angel of the North).”

Your chance to get into singing this September

A

fter a well-earned summer break, Stokes Singers are keen to tune up for the start of our new season when weekly rehearsals start again on Thursday 5th September.

Singing is what brings us all together, writes founder member Sue Callow, and we can’t wait to meet up and get going. I really miss my singing family and it will be good to see everyone again and catch up on the news.

Singing is frequently in the media these days. The Sing Up Foundation (singupfoundation. org) reports that singing lowers cortisol and relieves stress and tension, as well as boosting confidence. Singing is a mindful activity as it needs you to switch off from your busy thoughts and focus totally on what you’re doing.

Singing is also a great social activity which creates a strong sense of community, and learning

a new skill is a proven way to keep the brain in good shape.

Singing strengthens the immune system so it could be the perfect way to ward off those bugs that come with the cooler

weather and, as an aerobic activity, it increases overall health. It sounds like an allround winner!

If you love to sing and would like to give a community choir a try, why not come along to a Stokes Singers rehearsal?

Our current venue is Coniston Community Centre in Patchway, which is a welcoming, accessible building with free car parking right outside.

We’re very fortunate to have not one but two talented musical directors who are a great partnership. Sian Walters and Philip Lawrence are both trained teachers and professional musicians and, although their styles are very different, they work well together to make rehearsals fun but challenging.

They both have a wealth of knowledge of singing techniques and are able to offer advice to both experienced and novice singers on how to get the best from your voice.

With around 30 male and female members, we sing a range of music from pop to traditional folk via stage and screen and the occasional big choral piece. Most of our music is in three- or fourpart harmony, with some songs being arranged especially for us.

We learn from musical scores or by ear, so it’s not essential to read music – a lot of us don’t.

Everyone gets a chance to suggest music for the choir to sing and to vote for the organisations which we support at our concerts. This summer we were delighted to present a cheque for £300 to St Mungo’s who work with the homeless in the Bristol area.

Stokes Singers is a registered charity run by a committee of volunteer trustees, so we’re able to keep our subscriptions at only £3.75 per week, which covers the running costs, loan of a folder of music and our trademark turquoise polo shirts (black also available for men!) for informal performances at community events. That’s great value for three hours of entertainment.

We always go home re-energised with a few tunes to sing in the car or in the shower!

oadworks are due to begin on Gipsy Patch Lane from Monday 2nd September in preparation for construction work to replace the Victorian era railway bridge and widen the road as part of the Cribbs Patchway MetroBus Extension (CPME).

The September roadworks, which will involve the use of three-way traffic lights at the railway bridge, follow a fourweek full closure of the road in June 2019, which was required to allow BT to divert underground services ahead of the main project commencing in August.

Network Rail’s contractors Alun Griffiths duly commenced work at the site on Friday 9th August and they have already carried out some vegetation clearance along the railway corridor near the bridge. Ground preparations have also been carried out within the designated site compound area within the Horizon Business Park immediately south west of the bridge.

Following reports in the press that one business, Tyres Direct, saw a 40 percent drop in takings during the June road closure, South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) is emphasising that all businesses in and around Gipsy Patch Lane will be open as usual during this latest phase of work.

Work due to take place from September will include:

• Continuing work on establishing a construction site in the Horizon 38 Business Park next to the railway bridge. This is where the new bridge will be constructed before it is moved into position over Easter 2020 • Further clearance of trees and shrubs will take place around the existing bridge, including the removal of the large trees outside the Pegasus Park business area • Preparation for foundation work at the four corners of the new bridge and the installation of dropped kerbs for temporary pedestrian crossing points on Gipsy Patch Lane Piling works will need to be carried out from October to construct foundations for the new bridge.

To assist the work, a number of traffic management measures will be in use, including Stop/Go signs and temporary traffic lights.

Traffic management

From Monday 2nd September, temporary three-way traffic lights will be in operation on Gipsy Patch Lane at the railway bridge.

These will be in place for up to two weeks.

After this period, automated Stop/Go boards will be used as needed on Gipsy Patch Lane.

More record-breaking GCSE results at BSCS

S

tudents at Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS) are celebrating another exceptional set of GCSE results, with 16 percent of all grades awarded being at the highest possible grade 9 level and 26 percent at grade 7 or above.

The school reports that this year’s results set a new ‘best ever’ standard, in terms of both progress and attainment.

A number of subject areas have performed exceptionally well this year, with an impressive 82 percent of students achieving a grade 4 or above in both English and maths. English results continue to be a particular strength, with 93 percent of students achieving a grade 4 or above. Maths and science departments continue to thrive; with an impressive 87 percent of students in science and 84 percent in maths achieving a grade 4 or above.

BSCS headteacher Steve Moir commented, “We are all incredibly proud of our students’ achievements and that their immense hard work has paid off to produce another brilliant year of results.”

Boating bowlers

Lions support air ambulance charity

On a day, Sunday 11th August, when, alas due to bad weather, there were no balloons aloft in Bristol, members of Bradley Stoke Bowls Club managed to escape to complete a long-prepared outing to Reading, to play on an island in the middle of the Thames. Fry’s Island, also known as De Montford Island, is home to two boatyards, a private bungalow and the Island Bohemian Bowls Club. Access is by boat, so this is possibly the only bowling club that runs its own ferry service, seen above in the photo.

After a coach journey and a light lunch, the visitors were cordially received

by Island Club members, some of whom are qualified to run the necessary ferry service to gain access to their ground. This special experience added spice to a pleasant afternoon’s play, won by the home team in friendly fashion. After the game, a very sociable time was enriched by a scrumptious tea and jolly banter. The club captain for the day expressed his thanks to the hosts for creating such a happy occasion.

PRESIDENT Michael and Lion Ailsa visited the Great Western Air Ambulance’s new operational base at Almondsbury recently to present them with a cheque for £1,030.35. This amount included £780.35 raised at past president Robin Young’s funeral and a further cheque for £250 donated by Bradley Stoke Lions in remembrance of Robin. Thank you to all who donated money in lieu of flowers – Robin would have been so humbled by this response and so pleased that it went to such a worthwhile charity. Hospice charity shop now open at Willow Brook

C

hildren’s Hospice South West (CHSW) opened its 35th and newest shop in the Willow Brook Centre, Bradley Stoke on Friday 16th August.

The new outlet, located in the mall unit previously occupied by former Carphone Warehouse, offers a range of goods, including women’s, men’s and children’s clothing and accessories, as well as children’s toys and games and homewares.

Every item sold helps the charity to offer vital care and respite to more than 500 children with life-limiting conditions and their families across the South West.

The Bradley Stoke shop is anchored by a small paid team consisting of one full-time manager and three part-time assistant managers. They are supported by a team of enthusiastic volunteers, currently numbering around 20.

Although there has been a “brilliant” response already, the charity is on the look-out for more local volunteers to help run the new shop.

There’s a variety of tasks that people can do to help make a difference, from processing

Stock donations to the new shop are welcome and items can be dropped off during opening hours or alternatively call 01275 866600 to arrange collections of large items.

Advertising Bradley Stoke Kumon student success!

TOBY has just completed Year 4 at school and has been a Kumon maths student at the Bradley Stoke Study Centre for two-anda-half years. His mother enrolled him on the programme because she felt he was very bright and not getting challenged sufficiently at school; also he wasn’t getting much homework so she felt the daily routine of Kumon would be good for his study skills.

He had a comfortable starting point, working on the basics of addition, and continued for a year, during which time it was sometimes a struggle to get the work done. He’s a strong-willed young man who knows his own mind, so at times there were arguments at home, and he wanted to give up. However, he attended his first Advanced Student Honour Roll awards ceremony in January 2018 and this was a turning point for him as he received his Bronze Award. Also at this event, he was able to witness many other students achieving Silver and Gold (working on material significantly ahead of their age) as well as awards for reaching high levels of the programmes.

This inspired him to want to achieve the next award, and after working very hard this year on long multiplication, long division and multiplying and dividing fractions, he has just reached the Silver goal, which is a great

achievement for him. Toby says: “Kumon has helped me stay at the top of my school year for maths – I am doing work that the rest of my class haven’t learned yet. I am also really fast with my times tables and this is because of Kumon.” In Toby’s end of year report from school, his teacher commented: “As an extremely hard working individual, Toby has continuously made accelerated progress, and is confident in all areas of the curriculum.”

Sometimes he still finds it hard to get motivated to do the daily work, but his parents and Sarah (his Kumon Instructor) continually encourage him to keep going and praise him for his achievements.

Twenty years of the Young at Heart Club

M

embers of Bradley Stoke’s popular Young at Heart Club gathered at Christ the King Church on Thursday 22nd August for a party to celebrate the group’s 20th anniversary.

In this article, club members Josie Hadden and Brenda Capel look back at the history of one of the town’s oldest institutions.

In March 1999, Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre placed an advertisement in the local paper asking for local people to form a club for the over 50s. Bradley Stoke was still a relatively new town at this time and there was a lack of provision for social groups. Around nine people, including Brenda Caple and her husband, turned up for the initial meeting to discuss the setting up of this club.

The leisure centre offered us the use of a room rent free and the provision of tea and coffee also free of charge, for a period of six months, after which time a decision would be taken as to whether or not the club would continue.

The following week, several other people turned up keen to join the club, amongst others Jean Seagar.

Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre introduced us to a lady from Yate who had many years’ experience of running clubs with the aim of her assisting us in the process

of setting up the club and the associated requirements. These included the need to form a committee consisting of chair, vice chair, treasurer, secretary etc. Jim Adams was voted in as the first chairman and held the role for many years. The other roles were duly filled. The club now needed a name and Jean Seagar came up with the name ‘Young at Heart”. The club was now ready to move on with the weekly meetings.

The lady from Yate advised Jean that in connection with the committee she would need to think of weekly activities to fill the diary for three months in advance – not an easy task!

However, she did show us her own diary so that we get some ideas of what activities to aim for.

In the early weeks, members spent the time getting acquainted with each other and were quite happy to share their personal experiences with the other members e.g. what jobs they held prior to retiring and where they lived before landing in Bradley Stoke etc. Many an interesting story was told. Amazingly, more often than not by the end of the afternoon no one was ready to leave as the weekly meetings were proving to be very enjoyable and fun. Jean was often heard saying, “Come on let’s be having you – have you no homes to go to?”

News Mike Capel were always to be found in the kitchen doing the washing up and after tea there would be lots of banter coming from that direction.

As the weeks went by, more people came along to join the club which grew from strength to strength to the club we enjoy today. We now enjoy a full programme of activities all year round. These are varied and include games, quizzes, speakers and musical entertainers. From April onwards, coach trips are organised to the seaside, garden centres, historical and other places of interest. The club still has a committee, ably led as chairman by Christine, who meet formally once per month and control the activities of the membership, who are encouraged to make suggestions and proposals to keep the club active.

The venue eventually changed from the leisure centre to the Jubilee Centre (Blue Hut) and then to the Christ the King Church, where it has now been

meeting for over ten years.

Some of the original members still attend the club, some in their 90s!

Speaking to the Journal, Brian Hewitt MBE, a relatively new member of just five months standing, said the 20th birthday event was very well attended.

“Everybody said they enjoyed themselves, the entertainer was very good and hit all the ‘right notes’ to keep everyone happy and amused.”

Respecting our senior citizens An update from Jack Lopresti, MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke

A

s a Conservative MP, I am a great supporter of tradition. For me, tradition is accepting that the society we are all privileged to live in did not just spring out of the ground, fully formed. We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us and we have them to thank for bequeathing us the functioning democracy and economy that we enjoy today. The way we treat our elder generation is a clear signal of how grateful we are for our social inheritances and whilst life expectancy is happily around 81 years on average in the UK, our senior citizens are faced with a number of issues that we should all be mindful of.

According to Age UK, more than 2 million people in the UK live alone, and of those more than a million say that they go

for longer than a month at a time without speaking to a friend, neighbour, or family member.

This is a quiet emergency and it is unfolding in living rooms right here in our own communities.

The medical impact of loneliness is devastating, both physically and mentally, and can be the equivalent of smoking 15 cigarettes a day. In October the government published its first ever strategy for tackling loneliness. This builds on the work of numerous organisations and individuals over the years, as well as the £20 million of funding announced by the prime minister in June to support voluntary, community and charitable organisations to tackle loneliness.

voluntary sector. The strategy includes supporting all local health and care systems to implement social prescribing connector schemes across the country by 2023, building a network of employers to take action on loneliness, increasing the number of spaces for community use, and an additional £1.8m of funding to test how community spaces can support social connections.

As we age, many people find themselves increasingly reliant on public transport to shop, go to medical appointments, and see family. In our local area, the MetroBus and the immensely popular T1 service have greatly improved connectivity and when the MetroBus extension is completed, bringing the Mall at Cribbs Causeway and Bristol Parkway into the system, this will improve still further. However, there is still more to do and in particular I am concerned that public transport links to GP’s surgeries and to Southmead Hospital are maintained and, where possible, enhanced.

I am profoundly disappointed at the BBC’s decision to restrict free over-75s TV licences to only those on Pension Credit. I know that for many senior citizens television helps to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness and that there is a sizeable group of pensioners not quite eligible for Pension Credit for whom the

decision to remove their free TV licence imposes an unexpected financial burden that they may find difficult to meet. I believe there is a compromise to be made here and have written to the newly appointed culture secretary Nicky Morgan to express my concerns and call for action.

I am wanting to connect with our older residents to help understand their concerns and also to put them in touch with a range of groups and services to help offer support and good company. To do this, I have organised another Senior Citizens’ Fair after the success of last year. This will be taking place on Friday 13th September at Lincombe Barn, Downend, between 1.30pm and 4pm. Any backpacks that are in good condition will be appreciated (unfortunately drawstring-type gym bags cannot be used) and we would also welcome any donations of materials that can be put in the bags.

Family History Fair at BAWA in September

ttention all family history enthusiasts and those thinking about starting on their research! Put Saturday 28th September 2019 in your diary. The Bristol & Avon Family History Society will be holding its Family History Fair at the Bristol Aerospace Welfare Association (BAWA) Leisure Centre, Southmead Road, Filton.

The day will be an opportunity for anyone who needs help or advice on family history matters to have face-to-face sessions with local experts and representatives of Bristol & Avon Family History Society and other societies including Devon, Gloucestershire, Gwent, Hampshire, Dorset, Somerset & Dorset, Westonsuper-Mare & District, and Wiltshire. Over 30 exhibitors have signed up to attend.

Representatives from Bath and Bristol Archives will be on hand to give information and advice. A number of local history societies and museums will also be attending to allow visitors to gather more information on the work and living conditions that their ancestors may have experienced. New and secondhand books, postcards, maps, family history CDs, software and accessories will be available from a range of commercial exhibitors.

The Bristol & Avon society itself will be launching its new CD of transcriptions and indexes of Bristol Apprentices Books in the Bristol Archives covering the period 1532 to 1724.

There will be free introductory talks on ‘Starting your Family History Research’ and ’Using the Internet’. These will be aimed at those who want to get started on researching their families.

These will start at 10.30 am and attendees will be given free informative handouts, magazines and other useful research and recording tools.

There will also be a number of other talks during the day, the subjects including the suffragette movement and its effect in the Bristol / Bath area and Canadian research.

Also planned is an updated presentation of the ‘Know Your Place West of England Historic Mapping Project’, the project which started in Bristol but which now covers historic Gloucestershire, Somerset, Devon and Wiltshire as well as Bristol and Bath. The talk will be tailored to how the mapping system can be used in family history research. Full details of talks and times will be advertised nearer the date.

Prizes on offer in a free raffle staged at the event will include subscriptions to commercial websites and publications, DNA kits and books.

Doors open at 10am and admission is £2.00, children FREE. This gives access to the fair, entrance to all talks and a ticket for the free raffle. The fair closes at 4pm.

Nail picking and biting

nychophagia and Onychotillomania are conditions that are not easily spoken about but are rather common, especially amongst children and young adults. But what are they?

Onychophagia is defined as chronic nail biting behaviour, which usually starts during childhood. Onychotillomania results from recurrent picking and manicuring of the nails, leading to visual shortening or, in more extreme cases, inadvertent removal of nails.

These conditions can affect fingernails and/or toenails.

There is little evidence that these conditions have links to anxiety disorders or obsessive compulsive disorders. There is some collation between nail biting and tension, and a feeling of relief and pleasure is also reported. For some people boredom triggers the need to pick or bite. For others it is simply a habit that needs to be broken. No single condition causes nail biting or nail picking and sadly for sufferers of these conditions, there is no easy answer to why it happens.

Many people seek support to try and resolve these conditions, especially if the nails have become infected and the skin around the nails is split and damaged. In some cases nails can become ingrown causing significant discomfort.

A foot health professional will be able to help you manage your nails back to health. Nails need to be trimmed as short as possible, and filed, to ensure that there are no rough edges.

A good foot care regime will be discussed. In some cases we would suggest covering one nail to prove regrowth and success.

Remember that nail growth is slow. Toe nails take about a year to grow from base to tip.

Damaged toenails will need regular attention. Infected skin may need a consultation with a doctor and perhaps some medication.

If your nails are damaged, contact a foot health practitioner for advice and treatment.

Little Stoke bus driver thanked for actions

A

bus driver from Little Stoke has been praised for his actions in dealing with a series of medical emergencies affecting one of the regular passengers on his route.

First West of England driver James Mills has sprung into action on four separate occasions when regular customer Rachael Jay has suffered seizures or hypoglycaemic attacks whilst travelling on his service.

Rachael, aged 46, from Yate, suffers from epilepsy and has type 1 diabetes. She travels regularly on the Y2 service between Bristol and Yate.

She wanted to say a formal thank you to James, and so the two recently met up in happier circumstances at Marlborough Street bus station in Bristol.

Driver James, aged 27, has had to call for an ambulance on four occasions for Rachael when she has been suffering an epileptic seizure or hypoglycaemia caused by low blood sugar – once in Downend, once in Coalpit Heath and twice in Yate – staying by her side until paramedics arrived.

Rachael has since had her medication changed and says her condition is now “more under control”, but she wanted to thank James in person as well as raise awareness of the effects of epilepsy and diabetes and how it can affect everyday life.

Rachael, whose eight-year-old son Jacob has also recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, said: “I want to thank James for being so brilliant and acting so quickly when I have suffered attacks on the bus. Living with epilepsy and diabetes can really affect your lifestyle and for James to have presence of mind and to act so swiftly on all those occasions really helped.”

Chris Hanson, head of operations, First West of England, said: “We are very proud of James, who responded as we would hope all our colleagues would do in the same or similar circumstances. We are pleased that Rachael seems to be none the worse for her experiences and really touched that she has taken the trouble to recognise James for his actions.”

News Community transport charity celebrates 20th anniversary

F

riday 2nd August saw over 70 guests attend an event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of a charity which provides accessible transport to people across the Five Stokes area and beyond.

Attending the event at the headquarters of Four Towns and Vale Link Community Transport in Frampton Cotterell were members of the charity, local councillors, representatives of other local community groups as well as Four Towns employees both past and present.

Four Towns started in 1999 in a small office in St Peter’s Church, Filton. Volunteer car drivers used their own cars to help transport people to clubs, medical appointments and on shopping trips. They eventually got enough funding to be able to purchase their first ever minibus.

Four Towns has flourished ever since and currently has 28 vehicles in its fleet and a work force of over 30 employees including drivers, passenger assistants, management and office staff.

In later years the charity was based in Scott Park, Patchway, before making the move to Frampton Cotterell in 2016.

Dennis Rogers, chair of Four Towns, and guest of honour Shirley Holloway opened the celebrations with speeches on their own time spent working within the organisation over the years.

The event then continued with both Dennis and Shirley cutting a cake that had been specially made for the occasion.

There was also a chance for guests to learn more about the history of Four Towns, with

a display featuring many key moments and interesting facts captured throughout the years.

A Four Towns spokesperson said: “It was lovely to celebrate the achievements of the charity and share great memories and experiences from everyone involved. We would like to say a massive thank you not only to our guest of honour Shirley Holloway and chair Dennis
