Works starts on new Airbus test centre in Filton

W

ork has begun on a revolutionary wing testing centre on the Airbus site in Filton.

Around two hundred Airbus employees gathered at the site of their future test centre on 9th February to mark the start of construction.

The new £40 million facility will be an advanced testing centre for large structural components.

It will enable Airbus and its partners to develop new and cutting edge ideas for wings of the future, helping underpin the UK as one of the world’s leading aerospace sectors.

Airbus UK HR Director and General Manager Mark Stewart said: “Creating the wing of the future will be no easy task. The teams will explore the best materials, manufacturing and assembly techniques available, as well as new technologies in aerodynamics and wing

arents of students attending Bradley Stoke Community School (BSCS) have been warned of a looming financial crisis that could lead to the school day being shortened and/or class sizes being increased in order to save on staff costs.

Other “unthinkable” costsaving suggestions being put up for discussion include reducing support roles, such as teaching assistants, and asking parents/ carers to make regular financial contributions to the school.

The funding issues, which affect all seven schools operated by the Olympus Academy Trust, are said to result from historically low levels of government funding for schools within South Gloucestershire, in comparison with other areas of the country.

This has left the trust with less money in reserves to fall back on in hard times. On top of this, it is claimed that government funding has not been increased to compensate for inflation and increased costs that have fallen on schools in recent years.

Trust CEO Dave Baker said: “We have had to make cuts year-on-year for several years now because of the government’s ‘austerity’ policy, which has meant ‘flat’ budgets for education – in reality this has meant reduced funds to run our schools each year because we have had to pay for things along the way which previously we did not have to pay for, such as

increased employer pension and national insurance contributions for staff, the apprenticeship levy (a new tax from April this year), unfunded cost of living pay awards for staff, inflationary costs, provision of services that were funded externally before e.g. careers advice and guidance, behaviour and mental health support for students etc.”

Mr Baker predicts that the trust’s expected funding levels for the next academic year (2017/18) will make it their “most challenging year yet”. The trust’s two secondary schools, BSCS and Abbeywood, are likely to be hit hardest, with both having to “reduce spending by over 8 percent by September”, equating to £400,000 less in each school.

Mr Baker continued: “This cannot be achieved by trimming around the edges and is going to require new ways of working. In addition to our own challenges, we have been informed that we are going to have to contribute for the next three years to a cumulative overspend of £7 million by South Gloucestershire Council on special educational needs (SEN) placements out of the area! To add insult to injury, they are currently considering reducing the amount of funding we receive to support students with SEN, which could have a huge impact for us as we have two schools in the trust with specialist resource bases which receive SEN funding in order to function.”

Trust warns of looming funding crisis at BSCS Continued from facing page Under the government’s proposals for a new National Funding Formula, intended to produce a “fairer” distribution of school funding across the country from 2018/19, South Gloucestershire schools would see an average 2.4 percent increase, but for BSCS it will be only 0.9 percent. Overall, Mr Baker claims the trust will be “2 percent worse off than next year”.

A public consultation on the government’s proposed new funding formula is currently taking place (until 22nd March).

In conclusion, Mr Baker said: “Clearly the decisions we have to make are not being taken lightly and they are being taken at trust level with involvement of the Olympus Academy Trust Board of Trustees, who are ultimately responsible for what the trust provides. Trustees are working

closely with school and trust senior leaders to plan for the ‘least worst’ scenario, but there will have to be reduction and it will have a negative impact.

Our highest priority is to ensure the well-being and safety of all our learners and staff and to make sure that learning is not jeopardised by our decisions.”

The Olympus Academy Trust is encouraging parents of children at all its schools to write to local MP Jack Lopresti, to “voice concern about the impact of current and future funding for our schools”. Mr Baker recently met with Mr Lopresti and “warned him to expect contact from parents/carers in Olympus Academy Trust schools”. He reported that Mr Lopresti has “agreed to write to the secretary of state for education on our behalf as a starting point,” but added: “That alone will not be enough”.

Filton Concorde completes final journey to new £19m home

T

he last Concorde ever to fly has safely completed her journey to Aerospace Bristol, a new £19m museum that is due to open this summer at a site on the Patchway side of the former Filton Airfield.

The complex move was conducted with the greatest care by engineers from British Airways and Airbus, who managed every facet of Concorde’s final journey.

The iconic aircraft was towed across Filton runway and up a ramp into the new purpose-built hangar at Aerospace Bristol. The hangar, constructed by Kier, had a wall removed to allow the aircraft to enter the building and, with less than a metre between each wing tip and the building, Concorde was slowly and carefully winched into her exhibition position.

British Airways’ Concorde Alpha Foxtrot – also known as 216 - was the last Concorde to be built and the last to fly. She made her maiden flight on 20th April 1979 and touched down on her last flight to Filton on 26th November 2003. Since that landing, Alpha Foxtrot has stood alongside the Filton runway, cared for continuously by Airbus UK and remaining in remarkable condition. Now inside, she starts a new chapter as the centrepiece of the new Aerospace Bristol museum.

couldn’t be more delighted to welcome Concorde 216 into her new purpose-built home at Aerospace Bristol. With such enthusiasm for Concorde in this country, and particularly in Bristol where she was designed, built and landed for the final time, it is only fitting that this magnificent aircraft should have a permanent home at Filton. I would like to thank all of our donors for helping to make Aerospace Bristol a reality and look forward to welcoming our first visitors on board this summer.”

MetroBus project: February progress report

On Tuesday 14th February, following just over four weeks of night time surfacing between the Aztec West and Patchway Brook roundabouts, and working jointly with South Gloucestershire Council’s (SGC’s) signalisation team, the traffic lights at the Woodlands Lane and Orchard Gate junctions were commissioned and switched on.

Over the next few months, small works will continue, with some traffic management as necessary to complete signage, guard rails, landscaping and adding an anti-skid surface in certain areas. This work may involve some peak-time lane closures, as and when required.

All pedestrian crossings and footpaths are open, with the exception of the footpath eastbound where Oaktree Crescent meets Bradley Stoke

Way, as work continues in this area around to the A38 where, until April/May, we will be completing further MetroBus works including installation of a MetroBus stop. Pedestrians and cyclists can still cross at the Aztec West junction and use the temporary footpath around onto the A38, although it is advisable for cyclists to dismount through this section.

A38 South of Aztec West

Works have commenced from Bradley Stoke Way left around the roundabout onto the southbound A38 Gloucester Road for the MetroBus lane and bus stop. The existing toucan crossing on the A38 will also be re-sited. It is anticipated this will continue into early May due to the numerous utility assets in this area. A temporary footpath is provided outside the works area.

Woodlands Lane right-turn in & out: Reopened after being closed for 559 days Whilst the bus stop on the southbound A38 is out of use, Griffiths will seek to place a temporary bus stop on Bradley Stoke Way between the Orchard Gate and Woodlands Lane junctions. This is subject to the new bus lane being open, which is at the discretion of SGC.

South of Patchway Brook

The westbound bus lane along Bradley Stoke Way from the Willow Brook Centre to Patchway Brook Roundabout will remain coned and closed until legally signed and commissioned. Again, the timing of its opening will be determined by SGC. Further anti-skid surfacing is also required in some areas along this stretch.

Great Stoke Roundabout

We shall be commencing work on the section of Bradley Stoke Way between Great Meadow Roundabout (Baileys Court) and Great Stoke (Rabbit) Roundabout in the week commencing 27th February. Vegetation clearance has begun prior to this. The objective is to widen the carriageway to construct a new southbound bus lane on the eastern verge of the carriageway travelling from Great Meadow to Great Stoke.

We anticipate works will last for a duration of approximately three months. Initially, we need

to complete some groundwork, removing top soil and the embankment. Temporary traffic lights will be required over a period which shall remain intermittent throughout the scheme, with an overall duration not expected to exceed three weeks over the anticipated three month construction period.

The traffic lights will be in operation at off-peak times only.

Stoke Gifford By-Pass

The work in this area is shared between three contractors, with Griffiths having responsibility for the roadworks. There are two bridges; one was handed to Griffiths some months ago by Network Rail and good progress has been made with the road here. The other bridge (over the Ham Brook) is still in possession of the remaining contractor and Griffiths await access to complete the roadworks. Griffiths works are well on programme and we are currently forming the new access off Parkway North Roundabout.

Hambrook Lane reopened a week earlier than advertised following lane widening and kerbing. A further (and final) one-week closure will be required in May/June for resurfacing and road marking. Works along the A4174 Ring Road are 95 percent complete awaiting final surfacing at the tie-in and within the central reserve island.

ANNOUNCING the start of work at the southern end of Bradley Stoke Way, Griffiths spokesperson Jim Aitken said: “Earthworks will be planned once trial holes have been sunk. The project manager may decide to delay the earthworks until a favourable weather window materialises, in order to minimise issues with mud on the road.”

“All works will be during normal daytime working hours Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturday 8am to 1pm. During these hours, we will, at times, be using heavy plant machinery to lay and compact foundations for the new carriageway. This may cause some noise and vibration to the nearest properties.”

Ian W: Is it just me, but all the new lanes going down Bradley Stoke Way and beyond look dangerous? Two lanes into one lane and back into two lanes…The lanes going down Bradley Stoke Way, towards Tesco, look very narrow for cars. The new bus stop platforms are right next to junctions. Has this really been planned out correctly? Seems like the same person who planned the roadworks planned the layout.

Janet M: Yada, yada, yada… keep moaning! Moan that you want them to work through the night to complete the works. When they do…moan! Moan when they are ahead of schedule… perhaps the council should rename Bradley Stoke Way to Moaners Are Us Way. Shaun: So, we have endured 18 months of traffic hell in the north of Bradley Stoke on the Aztec West approach from Bradley Stoke Way, and now it has finished and the traffic lights have been switched back on. Net result – back to square one. Traffic jams on Brook Way and on Bradley Stoke Way in the mornings. Will all these people in cars start to use MetroBus when it starts? Nope, most of them are trying to get to/from the motorways. Utterly pointless!

News Work gets under way on new £100m office development behind Parkway Station

W

ork has started on a new £100m, 160,000 sq ft corporate office development on Hunts Ground Road, opposite the park and ride site at the rear of Parkway Station.

Developer Ashford Land was granted planning permission for the new development by South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) in June last year.

Contractor ISG is carrying out the site clearance and demolition on behalf of Ashfield Land. As well as being the demolition contractor, ISG previously occupied the former office buildings on the site for more than 40 years (having originally moved there in 1974).

Amanda Deeks, chief executive of the council, joined Ashfield Land director James Digby to mark the formal start of site clearance and demolition.

James Digby said: “Today is about bringing The Approach another step closer and readying

the site for redevelopment. It’s a major milestone and means we have real momentum as we look to move forward into construction and, ultimately, providing a top quality occupier with a new home here in Bristol.”

Cllr Colin Hunt, lead member for planning at SGC, added: “We’re delighted to see this key development site coming forward. Situated next to Parkway Station, The Approach will be an ideal location for

bringing new business to South Gloucestershire and creating hundreds of new jobs.”

JLL, which is marketing the building, anticipates The Approach will appeal to a number of national and international businesses, not least because it offers such attractive connectivity and quality while having lower occupational costs than comparable office space in London, the South East and even Bristol City Centre.

The new development will benefit from its proximity to the new Stoke Gifford By-Pass when this opens in September, allowing fast access to the M32. It also lies on the route of the planned Emersons Green to Bristol Parkway MetroBus service.

A

nyone driving past the car wash in the car park of Bradley Stoke’s Willow Brook shopping centre in recent weeks and seeing tens of photographers lined up on the edge of the road might be forgiven for thinking a film star had popped in to have their Rolls-Royce valeted. The reality, however, is that the guys (and gals) with the long lenses had them trained on a number of small berry-laden trees that have been attracting a rare visitor (of the feathered variety) to the area.

The birdwatching world in the south-west had been awash with reports of sighting of waxwings, starling-sized birds having a prominent punk-like crest and brightly coloured wings, with waxy-looking red tips on the flight feathers.

Waxwings are native to Scandinavia and Russia but, in winters when local supplies run low, they migrate to milder climates in search of food.

Their favourite winter food is fruit, in particular the berries of rowan and hawthorn trees, which

explains their presence in the Willow Brook Centre car park, where there are many rowan trees planted between the rows of parking spaces.

Waxwings are most often seen in the north of the UK and on the east coast, but in years when berries are particularly scarce, they move further inland in search of sustenance.

The last major ‘irruption’ (influx) of waxwings was in the winter of 2012/13, when several sightings were recorded in Bradley Stoke.

One of the photographers we spoke to at Willow Brook, Mark Jones, told us he had travelled from Berkshire in search of the elusive birds, of which there are thought to be just a few thousand scattered across the country. He said: “The flock that has been seen in Bradley Stoke is made up of around 15 birds – not a big number at all, and because they only come over once every four or five years, it’s really great to have the opportunity to see them.”

Twitchers flock to Willow Brook car park

“They do seem to turn up in the same places whenever there’s an irruption. It seems they’re able to smell out which are the ripest berries, so you must just have the ripest most well-done berries around here!”

Another snapper, Paul Cousins from Weston-super-Mare, who has been photographing birds for about 20 years, said: “I’ve been trying to get these birds for quite a few years now, and every time I kept missing them.”

Asked what sort of pictures he was aiming to get, Paul said: “With a berry in the mouth, no twigs in the way. Everything sharp from the beak right down to the tip of the tail.”

When we approached the Willow Brook Centre to ask them what they made of the unusual activity in their car park, manager Andy Wynn told us: “We were surprised to see the emergence of a group of people with binoculars and cameras in the car park last month, in numbers that grew day by day. They explained to us that we had some rare birds from

Russia in and around the car park, which was quite a surprise.

We have tried to accommodate the ‘twitchers’ as they’ve set up, including putting a few barriers out for their safety when they were overspilling into the road. It has been interesting to ‘watch the watchers’ over the past few weeks and to see many of their photos of these beautiful birds online, and they are welcome to use the space whilst the waxwings are in residence.”

Great demand for BS 10k Run places

ENTRIES have opened for the 2017 renewal of the Bradley Stoke 10k Run, to be held on Sunday 11th June as part of the town’s community festival. But you’ll need act quickly if you wish to take part, as more than 500 of the 650 places available have already been snapped up.

Organised by local ladies-only running club Sole Sisters, the

race starts and finishes at the Jubilee Centre.

Our recent workdays have mostly been filled with coppicing, which is cutting hazel tree trunks down to ground level, so that in the spring, many new straight new stems will grow again from the base. Although it may look harsh, the tree does not die but is rejuvenated and most managed woodlands have a rolling programme of coppicing hazel every seven years or so.

We’ve also coppiced the large willows down by the lower newt pond, as these are getting too big to have beside paths and houses.

The wood from these has been put aside to be made into some more simple seating around the reserve.

Our next workdays are on 4th March and 1st April.

Spring has arrived

The pond life on the reserve is beginning to stir with a few frogs and newts putting in an early appearance and we have enjoyed watching the birds eagerly checking out the new bird boxes we have been installing as part of National Nest Box week.

We are so pleased with our new woodcrete boxes that we have placed an order for another 30.

All the boxes are numbered and their place marked on a map, so this year we will have more of a chance of remembering where we put them!

The lake

Before much of the lake area is cordoned off for the planned Wessex Water work, we decided to get in early with an extra day’s volunteering. Green Gym made two floating platforms and these were launched on Sunday.

We’ve never tried this before and we think we overdid the floatation side of things, as they are floating very much higher than we expected! But thank you to the three children who were brave enough to sit on board to test them for us, although if they hadn’t sunk under me I think they were always going to be fairly safe!

The launch was nearly postponed, as the local superstore was unable to cut any fake turf for the platforms, but Almondsbury Garden Centre offered us some of their store off-cuts for free. Then the added height meant that we had to add a ramp for the birds to get on board, but by the afternoon everything was ready and the platforms were towed out to the island by kayak. The platforms have been secured to a tree on the island as we felt that if we needed to maintain them it would be easier to pull them back in than trying to retrieve anchors in the middle of the lake – although most of the lake has only a foot or so of water, the mud is quite deep and treacherous.

While we were on the island, we put up new bird boxes, as the old ones had all been used but were now rotten, and after a bit of a search, we found the plastic woodpecker that has been there longer than we have! We cut back bramble and reeds, made an otter holt under a fallen tree, created two swan nests and installed a ramp onto the island for the swans to use. Although Bradley and Brooke can get on and off

the island, they won’t nest there unless they feel there is easy access for their cygnets, so we’re hoping that this fits the bill! A large blockage was cleared from behind the island and several bags of litter were taken from the water, along with a deflated inflatable boat and several traffic cones. We didn’t finish until nearly 6pm and although we were very tired, wet and muddy, we all felt it had been worth the effort.

Updates on the Cribbs Patchway MetroBus Extension (CPME) along Hatchet Road Letter published by Stoke Gifford Parish Council on 20th February 2017 FOLLOWING a public meeting organised by the Parish Council on Tuesday, 22nd November 2016, South Gloucestershire Council has confirmed it will be continuing with a previously approved plan to introduce a southbound bus lane on Hatchet Road in Stoke Gifford.

The recent public meeting that was attended by nearly 200 residents strongly objected to proposals to introduce the bus lane in one direction through the heart of the village. These objections and concerns have been rejected by South Gloucestershire Council following numerous attempts by Stoke Gifford councillors to defer the decision on economical grounds.

The works will continue to proceed as agreed at the ECS Committee in July 2016, and it is understood that the CPME scheme will commence during

2018 and be completed early in 2021. South Gloucestershire Council have also confirmed that they are currently in the process of firming up the overall CPME programme, which has lengthened from the original publicised timescales.

The parish council urges South Gloucestershire Council to reconsider its decision to introduce a bus lane in one direction along part of Hatchet Road, which includes the removal of mature trees and hedgerows at a cost of £2.2 million pounds to save an estimated 29 seconds, especially as the overall MetroBus scheme is already overspent.

A revised detailed design phase is yet to be viewed regarding the implementation of the new southbound bus lane, which may vary from the original specification. At the same time,

it is understood that surveys are being conducted along the wider route regarding feasibility.

However, the new bus lane will potentially impact on one or two parks under the current management of the parish council that are currently leased from South Gloucestershire Council, namely Meade Park and Forty Acres (which incorporates Royal Park) – located on either side of Hatchet Road, Stoke Gifford.

In order to provide updates to local residents, the parish council is now planning to hold a further public meeting at 7pm on Tuesday 7th March 2017, to be held at The Old School Rooms, St Michael’s Church, North Road, Stoke Gifford. The meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss any options moving forward, and to consider establishing a residents’ local action group to tackle this issue.

Statement by SGC in response to queries from the Journal THE DECISION made by the ECS Committee in July 2016 confirmed that the scheme which we had consulted on should be progressed.

We are continuing to carry out preparatory work across the CPME route, including undertaking surveys to inform the detailed design. As part of this work, a ground penetrating radar survey was recently carried out along Hatchet Road.

We are also in the early stages of producing a construction programme that sets out which parts of the CPME scheme will be built when. The overall project programme, available at www.travelwest.info/metrobus/ extension, shows that CPME construction is planned to start in 2018.

The CPME project is being funded by the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership’s Economic Development Fund (EDF). The EDF funding allocation is £35m, and the Hatchet Road element is £2.02m.

SGC rejects councillors’ appeal to reconsider Hatchet Road bus lane plan

S

outh Gloucestershire Council (SGC) has reaffirmed its intention to construct a controversial £2 million bus lane down one side of Hatchet Road, despite appeals from local councillors to put the project on hold or consider replacing it with a cheaper scheme that would avoid the need to rip out mature hedgerows and scores of mature trees.

The new southbound bus lane, approved by SGC’s Environment & Community Services (ECS) Committee in July 2016, forms part of the Cribbs Patchway MetroBus Extension (CPME) scheme, which will link The Mall at Cribbs Causeway with Bristol Parkway Station and serve the new developments planned for the former Filton Airfield site.

With SGC’s own figures showing that the new bus lane will reduce bus journey times by just 29 seconds, and this only during the morning peak, with no improvement at other times of the day, the cost of installing has been described by Cllr Ernie Brown, chair of Stoke Gifford Parish Council, as “economic suicide”.

Following a public meeting held last November, Stoke Gifford’s three district councillors, Ernie Brown, Brian Allinson and Keith Cranney, vowed to table a motion at the next meeting of SGC’s Full Council to “defer the decision made by the ECS Committee until the impact of the Stoke Gifford By-Pass is known”. However, no

such motion was tabled at the subsequent Full Council meeting in February and the Journal understands that the councillors abandoned their plan to submit a motion when they realised it would fail due to a lack of support from their colleagues within the ruling Conservative group.

In a joint statement, the three Stoke Gifford councillors said: “We have raised residents’ concerns with members of the ECS Committee on several occasions since the November 2016 public meeting in Stoke Gifford. In these discussions, it was made clear to us that the decision made by the committee in July 2016 will not be changed.

This is despite the fact that the officer report presented to the July 2016 meeting showed that the alternative ‘option 3’ scheme, consisting of bus lay-bys without a bus lane, would cost less than the agreed ‘option 1’ bus lane scheme, and yet yield faster journey times for MetroBus vehicles.”

“The chair and deputy chair of the ECS Committee have confirmed to us that a bus lane will be added along the Meade Park side of Hatchet Road, irrespective of the impact that the opening of the new Stoke Gifford By-Pass has on local traffic flows.”

lind and partially-sighted people across Bristol are being offered help in taking up the sport of running, thanks to the efforts of a Bradley Stoke resident.

Colin Johnson, a member of Westbury Harriers and a keen runner for over ten years, has organised a ‘Couch to 5k’ training course aimed specifically at blind and visually impaired people.

The course, which started on Wednesday 1st March, is supported by a team of 24 volunteers who Colin arranged to be trained as UK Athletics accredited ‘running guides for the blind’, through a course held recently at the SGS College WISE campus in Stoke Gifford.

Adults with a visual impairment wishing to take their first steps in running are invited to attend the weekly ‘Couch to 5k’ sessions, for which the meeting point is Action for Blind People (RNIB), 10 Stillhouse Lane, Bedminster, Bristol BS3 4EB. Under-16s are also welcome, providing a parent/guardian is present and able to participate.

Colin explained that he became involved in ‘guiding’ last year when a running friend of his was looking for someone to help guide a runner in a marathon. “I love running myself, and how it helps me not only in a physical sense but also mentally, and I thought it would be great to help others also gain similar benefits and joys from the sport.”

The runner Colin has been guiding is Chris Blackabee, who has been blind since birth.

Together, they successfully completed the Budapest Marathon, and Colin says it was a “fantastic feeling” helping Chris achieve his marathon goal.

Chris is no stranger to challenges. Having been totally blind for most of his life hasn’t stopped him from becoming a triathlete, a skier (both downhill and cross-country) and a rock climber. “He is an inspiration to me with his can-do attitude to life, “ adds Colin.

Explaining what it means to be able to compete as a runner despite his disability, Chris said: “Running has completely changed my whole attitude to taking part in mainstream sporting activities, thanks to sighted athletes who have helped me every step of the way. Not only has it helped with my physical health but it has also assisted with my mental wellbeing. I now feel a part of an inclusive mainstream sport.”

“When I started running a few years ago, I struggled to run a mile without having to make stops to gather my breath, but in a relatively short time I have progressed to being a marathon distance runner alongside a certificated UK Athletics sighted guide. In addition to the health and wellbeing benefits, I have made amazing lifelong friends on my journey to fitness. I am now achieving goals that I could have only ever dreamed of before. This is a target anyone with a visual impairment can hit; you just need determination, drive, a can-do attitude and the support of a willing guide runner.”

Asked about his motivation for starting the ‘Couch to 5k’ course, Colin said: “After spending time with Chris, I realised that running provided a lot more than just improved fitness, but was also able to widen a person’s social group by meeting new friends as well as the obvious physical (but also the mental) benefits that exercise brings.”

“Chris explained that many visually impaired (VI) people can become isolated from society and develop a low self-belief in their own abilities, and having seen the positives that running has provided Chris, I had the idea to try and set up this running group in Bristol in the hope that we could achieve the same for other VI people in the area.”

Hitachi to create 150 jobs at new train depot in Stoke Gifford

apanese firm Hitachi is creating 150 jobs at its newly built train service depot in Stoke Gifford.

The £80m facility, near Bristol Parkway Station, will maintain the new Intercity Express (ICE) trains which will run on the Great Western route later this year.

Recruitment for the 150 jobs is starting now to ensure the facility is ready ahead of arrival of the new trains, which will connect London to Wales and the South West of England, entering service later this year.

Work carried out at the Stoke Gifford depot will include readying trains for passenger services. Whilst housed at the depot, trains will be serviced to ensure they are in good condition, safe and clean. Day to day tasks will include engine tests, changing wheel sets and running thorough inspections of the trains.

upils at Bowsland Green Primary School in Bradley Stoke were the first in the world to trial a new computer game last term, which has been developed by the National Crime Agency and Aardman. The game’s designers, producer and a member of the Aardman agency wanted the views of young people to ensure their game was engaging and appropriately challenging.

Pupils in Years 4 and 5 were chosen by their teachers for consistently showing their ‘Bowsland Best’ in their learning during the preceding week. Staff at the school say their visitors

were blown away by the pupils’ knowledge of online safety, their attention and focus, maturity, and appreciation of the work that has gone into producing the game.

The pupils’ feedback will inform changes to the game, which the school hopes to use across Key Stage 2 once it is completed.

Miss Harris, Bowsland’s Key Stage 2 leader, said: “This was a fantastic afternoon for our pupils, who were incredibly inspired by the experience. Silver theme chosen for this year’s carnival

radley Stoke’s communityrun carnival is back for 2017, after taking a year off last year.

This year’s carnival will take place on Saturday 26th August and as the event takes place in the same year as Bradley Stoke Town Council’s 25th anniversary, we thought it would be a great idea to have a silver theme to celebrate this milestone.

The event will take place on the Jubilee Field on Savages Wood Road and will play host to a live music stage, family-friendly entertainment and much more.

We mentioned last month that with the kind assistance of the Journal and via the carnival Facebook page we would keep you updated as to what is being planned for the big day this year.

We received a lot of lovely, positive feedback last time out and so we are trying to incorporate some of the favourite elements again this year.

The Carnival Committee is pleased to confirm that we have been able to secure the City of Bristol Pipes and Drums to once again lead the parade, although this time the full band will be marching and performing in the parade as well as in front of the stage on arrival at the carnival field. Also returning by popular demand are the stilt walkers and the fire breathers, the latter once again performing an exciting show in the stage demo area.

Punch and Judy also features again this year, as it was so popular with our younger audiences, as well as the adults.

The City of Bristol Pipes and Drums will lead this year’s carnival parade

Live music will again be a feature of the carnival on the Bradley Stoke Radio stage, with their volunteers providing the stage itself as well as the sound equipment.

We hope to build on the last carnival’s musical variety and so far have secured a Neil Diamond tribute act as well as an amazing local band, Angel Heart, covering amongst others some classic

Blondie numbers.

Nominations open for Stars of the Stokes 2017 Nominate your community hero by 23rd April • Winners will be honoured at a glamorous awards night in June

T

hree local business have once again teamed up to launch the Stars of the Stokes awards, a set of community awards for the local area, including Bradley Stoke, Little Stoke, Harry Stoke, Stoke Lodge and Winterbourne.

Following a highly successful inaugural year in 2016, the Willow Brook Centre, the Bradley Stoke Journal and the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Bristol North are jointly promoting the 2017 renewal of the awards, which will culminate in a glamorous Black Tie dinner and presentation evening at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel on Friday 16th June.

Members of the public are being asked to nominate anyone living in the local area who they feel deserves recognition for outstanding community engagement and/or achievement of personal goals.

This year’s award categories are: Star Teacher, Pre-School Carer of the Year, Achievement Against the Odds, Young Hero, Champion Carer, Parent/ Guardian in a Million, Coach of the Year, and Unsung Hero.

The eight categories are sponsored by local businesses including the Aztec Hotel, Almondsbury Garden Centre, the Olympus Academy Trust and Dunkley’s Chartered Accountants.

Bailey’s school says: “Let’s CAP cancer” Cap-wearing day at Stoke Lodge raises over £900 to support cancer sufferer’s family

P

upils at Stoke Lodge Primary School have taken part in a special event to support the family of a pupil, eight year old Bailey Cooper, who recently underwent nearly four months of hospital treatment for a form of cancer.

Bailey was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in October last year. He endured four rounds of chemotherapy and steroid treatment at Bristol Children’s Hospital before being given the all-clear in February.

He is currently in remission and has recently returned to school.

Roye Aguila, a parent of a pupil in Bailey’s class, approached PE teacher Pete Holbrook with the idea of raising funds to help the family. His suggestion was to allow the children to wear a “Let’s CAP Cancer” cap for the whole day in school in return for a donation. Over £900 was raised at the event which was held on 24th February and the money will be donated to the family. It is hoped this will become an annual event with money raised in future years going to a local hospital.

Roye says that the event would not have been possible without the support of sponsors Design Scaffolding, The Whitchurch and Flipout Bristol. Bristol Rugby, who work with the school on a regular basis, also sent along their mascot to support the event.

Bailey’s younger brother, fiveyear-old Riley, also joined in the fund-raising by having his head

shaved during the Fun Day. Rachel said: “We cannot thank people enough for all the help they have given us. It has been awesome, everyone has been incredible. Our family and friends, the school, Roye, Mr Holbrook and all the other parents. It really has been awesome!”

Roye Aguila told the Journal that he does not want this to be the end of his involvement in raising awareness of childhood cancer and that he is in the process of applying for “Let’s CAP Cancer” to become a registered charity. ● www.stokelodgeschool.co.uk

Overwhelming support

Bailey’s parents, Rachel Hollyman and Lee Cooper, told the Journal that they were overwhelmed at the support they have received from the local community and the school. Rachel had to give up her job at Caerleon Child Care (inside Jump at Patchway) and Lee had to cut his working hours when Bailey was diagnosed with the life-threatening condition so they could spend time with Bailey and his younger brother, Riley.

The family were initially supported financially through an online GoFundMe appeal set up by family friend Kelly Doig.

M

arch marks the beginning of spring and with it good weather. It is also a month to mark several campaigns within the NHS, in particular Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

I meet many men concerned about prostate cancer in my clinics. This is unsurprising as it is the most common cancer affecting men in the UK and effects 1 in 8. The risk of being affected rises in those with a family history or of AfroCaribbean descent.

The main function of the prostate is to produce semen. It is a small gland sitting behind the bladder and enlarges as you get older. In prostate cancer the cells grow very rapidly in an uncontrolled manner.

Symptoms can be mild and can slowly occur over many years. They may include increase need to urinate

(especially at night), straining, dribbling, poor urine flow or new onset back or hip pain. It should be noted that some of these symptoms also occur in a non-cancerous condition called benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH).

I am often asked about the PSA test (prostate specific antigen test). Unfortunately, this is not a ‘yes or no’ test for prostate cancer. PSA is a protein that is naturally produced by the prostate and rises with age and the size of the prostate.

The result can also be affected by urine infections, vigorous exercise, ejaculation or a prostate examination.

PSA can be raised in other non-cancerous conditions such as prostatitis and BPH. It can also miss prostate cancer and 15% of men with prostate cancer may have a normal PSA result. Moreover, a raised

PSA may lead to unnecessary further tests such a biopsy, which has its own risks.

For these reasons, it always important to combine the PSA test with clinical symptoms and examination (i.e. a digital rectal examination of the prostate gland).

It should also be noted that prostate cancer often grows slowly to start with and may never cause any problems in many men. Eighty-four percent of men with prostate cancer will survive for ten years or longer.

So if you are worried about prostate cancer, please make an appointment with your GP. We can go through your risks of the disease and the pros and cons of testing.

Bradley Stoke in Bloom February update

W

inter is a quiet time for an In Bloom group. Apart from tidy ups, planning and eating biscuits, there seems little for us to do. We have been keeping busy though, and have been planting bulbs around the town which are already beginning to show.

Although not strictly in our remit, we also collected the fallen leaves from under the Baileys Court conker tree, as these trees are under threat by the horse chestnut leaf miner moth. As some agencies are suggesting that the trees could be wiped out in just 15 year’s time, we wanted to do what we could, so we agreed with South Gloucestershire Council’s (SGC’s) tree officer that we would collect the infected fallen leaves and burn them; this destroys the moths’ eggs and stops them re-infecting the tree in the spring.

After two years of waiting, we finally received the muchheralded map from SGC showing the plots of land that they have deemed suitable for use by community groups. Sadly, most of the plots suggested are either hidden away behind residential areas or are very small (they include a 1ft wide strip of mud

next to a driveway or half of a small verge) or are unsuitable for us (although we do know how to lay a hedge and how to clear bramble from paths, that’s not what we’re here for). We also spoke to some of the neighbours of the plots and they weren’t keen on having their boundary trees made into a hedge or having their ‘kick about’ patch made into a wildflower meadow. There were, however, a few areas that we are interested in and hopefully SGC will be willing to lease them to the group.

We were asked by residents if there was anything we could do to improve the neglected corner opposite Brook Court, on Savages Wood Road, so we persuaded the Green Gym to lend us a hand and between us we cleared the 15ft high bramble that was covering the trees and hanging over the path. BSiB later went back to move the cut bramble, plant a flowering cherry tree to replace the sad and dead looking blackthorn and have planted lots of daffodils.

In Brief Update on toddler and pre-school groups Jessica Stone, one of the volunteer leaders at the First Steps Toddler Group, which we featured in our January magazine, has contacted us to say that the group’s Thursday sessions, which had been due to stop, will now be able to continue, thanks to a change in personal circumstances.

First Steps sessions run on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at Christ the King Church, Mautravers Close (off Brook Way), from 10am to 11.30am.

Most people will have heard of dementia, it’s featured in the press as well as in story lines on television. But you might not know that there are 850,000 people living with this illness in the UK, that 40,000 are under the age of 65 years and that here in South Gloucestershire around 3,000 people are affected.

What these figures tell is that the illness is more prevalent than we might believe. Two thirds of those with dementia are living in their homes, in the community and they would like to continue to do what they have been doing for as long as they are able.

Over 600,000 families in the UK are impacted by dementia, those families uses services, go shopping and it makes sense if businesses were working to become dementia friendly.

The South Gloucestershire dementia action alliance (SGDAA) was set up in 2015 to raise awareness of dementia, work in partnership with

businesses to support them to become dementia aware, because we want South Gloucestershire to become a friendlier community for all, including those living with dementia.

The SGDAA is inviting businesses and organisations to a dementia business workshop on Wednesday 15th March at The Park Centre in Kingswood to find out how they can make their businesses dementia aware.

It’s an opportunity to network and hear about what research is discovering about dementia as well as learning how you can ensure that your organisation is working to be dementia friendly.

News Bradley Stoke Beat Team PC Claire Fletcher reports Burglar jailed for four years

A

man has been jailed for burglary thanks to a call from a member of the public about suspicious activity in Bradley Stoke.

The 42-year-old man, of no fixed abode, was sentenced in January to four years in prison. He was caught thanks to a report of a man behaving suspiciously at a house in Bradley Stoke in December.

My colleague PC Jamie Shiels was patrolling Bradley Stoke at the time and was one of the officers who responded to the call, which led directly to the suspect’s arrest.

The man admitted burgling a house in Bristol and asked the court to take into consideration 12 other offences. These included eight burglaries in which cash, jewellery, watches, electrical items and a bike were stolen from homes in Bradley Stoke, Stoke Gifford and Bristol during November and December.

We have seen higher levels of burglary than usual in our town, and we’re carrying out targeted patrols and working hard to target those responsible. This case shows how we can all help to keep Bradley Stoke safe and, although this offender is in prison, I’d ask everyone to carry on keeping their homes secure.

Stoke Gifford Busy Bees rated ‘outstanding’

usy Bees nursery in Stoke Gifford is celebrating after receiving an ‘outstanding’ rating following its latest Ofsted inspection in December 2016.

Staff at the nursery, which is located in Simmonds View, say they are especially proud because fewer than one in ten ‘early years’ settings in the UK hold this rating.

The nursery received its exceptional ‘outstanding’ rating from Ofsted, the official body for inspecting schools, after attaining a perfect score in all four areas of inspection, namely: quality of teaching, learning and assessment; personal development, behaviour and welfare; outcomes for children; and the effectiveness of the leadership and management.

Ofsted praised the nursery’s quality of teaching, noting that: “Staff are highly committed to providing exciting and stimulating activities to promote all areas of learning. They use every opportunity to provide children with essential language and mathematical skills.”

Child development was given a special mention as Ofsted recognised that: “Children make exceptional progress from their starting points and are encouraged to become thoughtful, kind and extremely confident children who care about each other.”

Silver sporting success for St Chad’s

S

t Chad’s Primary School in Stoke Lodge has recently been awarded the Silver Sainsbury’s School Games Mark showing its excellent sport provision across the primary age range, putting them in the top 20 schools for sport provision (both primary and secondary) in South Gloucestershire.

Sainsbury’s School Games Mark is a government-led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.

In order to achieve the Silver Mark, St Chad’s raised the profile of sport across the school and encouraged and developed it within their local community. 100% of St Chad’s children now participate in intra-school competitions at least six times a year, enabling children to compete against other children within the school and in addition to this, the numbers of St Chad’s children competing in sport against other schools within the area has increased significantly over the last two years. Examples of sports that pupils have represented St Chad’s in include cross country, archery, football, rugby, rounders, multi-skills, athletics and dance. Their continued focus on sport has raised outcomes for children resulting in some

great sporting successes; pupils from the school were crowned champions in: rugby at the Patchway Community College (PCC) tag rugby tournament, multi-skills (also at PCC), archery hosted by Gordano Archers in a local competition, and archery a second time at the Festival of Youth Sport, showing a great increase in the competence in and enthusiasm for sport within the student body.

Mrs Jenkins, deputy headteacher and sport lead commented: “At St Chad’s, we believe that all children should have the opportunity to access high quality PE and sport, so that they can develop key skills in a broad range of physical activities and lead healthy, active lives. Every child takes part in a minimum of two hours physical education each week plus additional active club provision, where we aim to inspire every child to enjoy physical activity.”

A

weekly ‘rhyme time’ session has been a popular attraction at Bradley Stoke Library for a number of years now, but a recent initiative has seen the concept given a new twist – with the introduction of a Spanish language variant!

The new weekly Spanish Rhyme Time has been started by local mums Adele Innes and Adriana Moreno with the aim of helping youngsters learn Spanish through singing fun children’s songs. It is not a Spanish lesson as such, but the intention is that children will pick up the language through repetition.

Adele, who is from Scotland, has studied several languages and learnt Spanish whilst living in her husband’s home country of Ecuador, while Adriana hails from Columbia.

Before moving to Bradley Stoke, Adele used to take her children to a Spanish Rhyme time in London, which she says they thoroughly enjoyed.

Adele told the Journal: “I would have started this group as soon as we moved here two years ago, but I was waiting to find a native speaker who wanted to run it with me. The group aims to create community amongst local Spanish speakers and families with ancestral links to the language. It also looks to support children who are taught Spanish at school and welcomes any child who would like to be (or whose parents would like them to be) exposed to Spanish.”

their parents to enjoy Spanish children’s songs and stories with both fluent Spanish speakers and those who are just starting out.

Adele says the group can be of encouragement to children “at any stage of their journey with Spanish”.

Spanish Rhyme Time is intended for babies, toddlers and school children up to Year 2.

“Although babies can’t sing, they can still enjoy the songs and will know them all by the time they do learn to speak,” explains Adele.

At present, there are around 15 children who attended the session. Four or five Spanishspeaking families are there every week, along with a few Englishspeaking families. Often, a couple of families who just happen to be in the library when the session starts will join in too!

Explaining the format of the sessions, Adele says: “We start with a lovely song which says ‘hello’ to each child by name and adds the typical greeting ‘Hola, como estas?’ (Hello, how are you?). We then sing some songs while seated and some songs standing up. Most songs have actions. Each week someone reads a story about a letter of the alphabet which helps us learn the Spanish alphabet. We have just started to learn a tongue twister in Spanish too.”

Adele concludes: “Although I don’t claim to be an amazing singer (like a certain famous

namesake!), I do love singing and languages, and thoroughly enjoy leading the Spanish Rhyme Time.

I’m sure that children will pick up lots of Spanish through attending the sessions frequently.”

Steven, a local dad who brings his children Oliver and Amelia to the sessions says: “It’s a great way to introduce the language in a fun environment, which is led by fluent Spanish speakers who kindly donate their time.”

Another parent, Marta, who is Spanish and brings 6-yearold Miriam, adds: “I want my daughter to continue to have contact with Spanish and not forget the typical children’s songs we sing in Spain” Spanish Rhyme Time takes place on Thursdays, during termtime only, starting at 4.15pm. The sessions last around half-an-hour.

South Glos council tax to rise by 4.99 percent

S

outh Gloucestershire Council’s (SGC’s) element of the council tax levied on local residents is to increase by 4.99 percent from April and looks set to be followed by a similar above-inflation rise in 2018/19.

Meeting on 15th February, councillors agreed to set a revenue budget of £193.25 million, with the increase in the council-controlled element of council tax being made up of a 1.99 percent general increase plus a further 3 percent specifically ring fenced to adult social care to help meet the demographic and other service pressures.

A council spokesperson said the increase is designed to help protect council services as funding from central government is reduced. It means that the average charge for a Band D property for the SGC element of the total council tax bill will rise to £1,359.

Public consultation carried out by the council prior to the budget-setting process showed that 45 percent of respondents were in favour of a council tax rise for 2016/17 of 2 percent or more (inclusive of the adult social care element).

Leader of South Gloucestershire Council, Councillor Matthew Riddle, said: “As a council we are focussed on delivering services to meet the needs and priorities of all our residents and local businesses. I am pleased to say that we will continue to do that with this year’s budget.”

“While finances remain tight and we continue to look for ways to do everything we can as efficiently as we can, I am pleased that we are also able to invest and build for the future, particularly in school and transport infrastructure projects.”

“The council delivers a huge range of services to our whole

community and while we are always under pressure to be ever more efficient, where savings have to be made, the priority remains to protect front line services wherever possible.

Thanks to the continued and dedicated efforts of our staff, I believe that we are well placed to meet future challenges.”

Looking forward to 2018/19 and beyond, Cllr Pat Rooney, Labour group leader, warned that the authority will soon face a “financial black hole”, at the same time as growing demands are made on its vital services.

She pointed to the council’s Medium Term Financial Plan, which shows that SGC can only balance its budget next year by using up its £6.9 million of reserves, and that in 2019/20 the authority faces a £9.2 million black hole. “This dire picture comes after £22 million of planned cuts have already been

implemented,” she added.

In addition to the South Gloucestershire element, bills that will be coming through letterboxes in the next few weeks will include contributions to the Avon and Somerset Police and the Avon Fire & Rescue Service, both of which have risen by 1.99 percent over 2016/17, and the precept raised by Bradley Stoke Town Council (up by 0.5 percent from last year), producing a grand total of £1,721.94 for a Band D property, an increase of 4.14 percent over last year.

Indicative increases in the total council tax bill which will be faced by Bradley Stoke residents for the following three financial years are given as 4.23 percent, 1.90 percent and 1.87 percent.

The Barn needs YOU!

W

interbourne Medieval Barn Trust (WMBT) has reached an exciting (and daunting) stage in its bid for Heritage Lottery (HLF) funding, and is trying to spread awareness of the Barn and the community project across the whole of the local area.

The Barn, on the doorstep of Bradley Stoke, is owned by South Gloucestershire Council who purchased it to save it from dereliction, but it is entirely managed by volunteers from across South Gloucestershire.

It is a wonderful heritage asset, and with the help of HLF funding could also become a community centre for education and rural skills.

Winterbourne Medieval Barn was built in 1342 by Sir Thomas de Bradeston, then Lord of the Manor of Winterbourne, who played an active part in Edward III’s military campaigns in the Hundred Years War. It is the only surviving example in England of a medieval great barn built by a gentry family. It is also an outstanding example of a raisedcruck construction, one of the largest and earliest of its kind, and the original roof structure

has remained largely intact for nearly 700 years.

WMBT is currently being supported by the HLF to submit full plans for the long-term future of the Barn as a community, heritage and education asset.

As part of this project, the Trust has to raise £400,000 in 2017 in order to release £1m of funding from the HLF, and they are delighted to have received a first pledge of £20,000 from the Architectural Heritage Fund.

This is an exciting time for the Barn, and the Trust would be delighted to hear from local people who would like to get involved as volunteers. People can give as much or as little time to the project as suits them, and while certain skills are very useful for some roles, there are plenty of volunteering opportunities that require no particular experience.

Those who enjoy hands-on physical work might like to help with ‘Barnforce’ once a month on a Saturday morning - just turn up (18th March, 15th Apr) or call 0117 957 4921 to find out more or try the Gardening Group who meet on Friday mornings (call Liz 01454 775306). No gardening experience is necessary. More

information is available on the website (see below).

The Barn would also love to have more people to help out at one or more of its varied events, maybe as a car park attendant, or on the gate, or manning a stall, or helping set up or clear up, or lots of other jobs. Many hands make light work as they say! Most events are held in the summer months, although there are also carols in the barn in December.

The Trust is also looking for people to help with little day-today jobs, for example managing the membership list (computer skills needed), or tweeting or managing the Facebook page (social media skills needed).

Volunteering is a very rewarding experience, and can introduce you to new friends and new activities you might never have considered. Potential volunteers can contact the WMBT through the website, or by emailing volunteerwmbt@gmail.com or if you do not have internet access by calling Robert on 0117 957 4921. Everybody is welcome, whatever your age and whatever amount of time you can offer.

WMBT will be putting on a varied programme of events in the Barn through the year, including favourites like a medieval fayre, Shakespeare in the Barn, and Orchard Harvest Day, as well as new events like the UWE Jazz band, a Story of Medieval Music from top trumpet-player Tom Harrison (who grew up locally) and a production of Alice in Wonderland. There are also various hands-on workshops held throughout the year, e.g. basket-weaving, singing, drystone walling. Gregor Heating hits £10k in a ‘Grand Appeal’

ver 120 staff from a local heating company in Warmley have gone all out to hit their £10,000 fundraising target to support their charity of the year.

As part of the celebration of 30 years in business, Gregor Heating, Electrical and Renewable Energy set themselves this ambitious target for their nominated charity of 2016, Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity.

From small events in the office every last Friday of the month, to a huge Family Fun Day at Bath Racecourse, the Gregor Heating team took part in a variety of fundraising activities. They also committed to donate £5 for every private boiler installation and £1 for every private boiler service completed in 2016, to help achieve the target.

Steve Gregor, managing director of Gregor Heating, said:

“As a company, we have always looked for ways to give back to the local community that has supported us over the years, and for our 30th birthday we really wanted to do something special. The stories of the families supported by Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal really touched the hearts of the team
