What's New in Greater Palm Springs

Greater Palm Springs is buzzing this summer, from a new festival called XOXO, iconic pool parties and film festivals to the return of beloved local eateries, there is something for every local and visitor to explore.

The season kicks off with Greater Palm Springs Restaurant Week, running from May 29–June 7, which offers a 10-day celebration of the desert's dining scene through prix fixe menus and exclusive special offers. On June 12, the community will gather for KGAY'S BIG SPLASH: #Support Your Station Pool Party, a vital fundraiser to help the local LGBTQ+ radio station navigate rising streaming costs and continue its mission as a beacon for queer voices.

From June 11–22, XOXO Palm Springs will transform the desert into an "open-air cultural playground" during a twelve-day citywide festival dedicated to arts, culture, and creativity. The event features a curated lineup of theater, gallery walks, live music, and film screenings across various local venues. As the arts festival concludes on June 22, the PS/ NExT (New Experiences in Technology) Summit kicks off at the Palm Springs Convention Center, shifting the focus to the intersection of AI, emerging tech, and business. This 1.5-day summit offers specialized tracks for beginners, developers, and educators, featuring high-profile

speakers such as director Rob Minkoff and storyteller Baratunde Thurston. Following this, the Palm Springs International ShortFest takes place from June 23–29, showcasing hundreds of short films from around the globe in one of North America’s largest competitive showcases of shortform cinema.

In July, the 15th Anniversary of Gay Wine Weekend occurs from July 17–19; while this event is returning to its roots in Sonoma Valley, it remains a featured highlight for the regional LGBTQ+ community, offering winemaker dinners, a Twilight T-Dance, and a Drag Queen Brunch. That same weekend, on July 18–19, the San Diego Pride Festival will be held at Balboa Park, celebrating diversity and inclusion with multiple stages of live entertainment.

As August arrives, the desert heats up with Splash House, a 21+ pool party festival held over two weekends (August 7–9 and August 14–16) featuring performances across three host hotels and late-night sets at the Palm Springs Air Museum. What's New in Greater Palm Springs

continued from page 7

Finally, looking ahead to the fall, The Dinah returns from September 30–October 4, with new producers BellaRose Productions taking the torch to continue the event's 34-year legacy of pride and visibility.

The local business landscape is equally active, led by the highly anticipated return of Papa Dan’s Pizza. After a devastating fire forced the restaurant to close for nearly two years, this valley favorite has finally reopened its doors in Palm Desert. Fans of the pizzeria should note that they have moved to a new, larger location within the same shopping center on Country Club Drive to accommodate their "resurrection."

This year marks a major milestone with the renovation and reopening of Eagle Cathedral City, a new LGBTQ+ leather bar and nightclub taking over the historic former Barracks Bar space. The new Eagle brings a modern, community-focused twist to the iconic “Eagle” tradition, complete with a renovated interior, outdoor patio, and upgraded sound and lighting— creating an inclusive hub for nightlife, events, and connection across the Coachella Valley. Meanwhile, several beloved gay bars are under new ownership or transformation, including Dick’s on Arenas, Toucans Tiki Lounge, and Chill Bar. The former Bongo Johnny’s Arenas space—briefly Sonny’s—is rumored to debut a new concept in time for Palm Springs Pride, and plans are underway for Pride’s 40th Anniversary, happening November 6–8

Coffee lovers have new grounds to explore at Desert Kid Coffee on San Pablo in Palm Desert. This shop stands out by using a unique air-roasting technique and acting as a community "third space" that hosts "Desert Sounds," an intimate, recorded live music series featuring local artists. In Palm Springs, Harriet’s Bar & Lounge at Casa Cody—located in the city's oldest operating hotel—is now inviting neighbors and locals to enjoy its breezy patio and poolside tables. They offer an all-day menu from 7 AM to 10 PM that includes everything from artisan-inspired breakfast to specialty handcrafted cocktails and coffee from Other People’s Coffee (OPC).

The variety continues with California Bistro, which has breathed new life into the formerly vacant Carnival restaurant space in Rancho Mirage, offering a full menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For those looking for a different kind of excitement, the Palm Canyon Axe Club on North Palm Canyon Drive provides a unique outlet for stress relief. The facility features axe throwing, an arcade, and "The Bash Cave," a rage room where guests can smash various items in a Mid-Century Modern atmosphere. One big Summer 2026 promise is the grand opening of DSRT Surf in Palm Desert, a premier resort featuring a 5.5-acre lagoon capable of producing 1,000 ocean-like waves per hour alongside a luxury hotel, private villas, and courts for pickleball. Finally, looking toward the end of the year, Joe Coffee is slated to open its second location in late December 2026. This Provincetown staple will be housed in the historic, restored offices of famous architect Howard Lapham in South Palm Springs, conveniently located directly across from the Tool Shed.
