The Operation Mincemeat 75th Anniversary Set The complete set of coins, stamps and top secret documents commemorating the true spy story that changed the course of the second world war.

75 years ago, one of the most important wartime operations took place, the documents behind which have since been declassified.

The operation involved placing ‘top secret’ documents on the dead body of an apparent British officer, ‘Major Martin’, for the Nazis to find which suggested the Allies planned to invade Greece & Sardinia, with the real target of Sicily being merely a feint to Misdirect German military effort.

The documents were so convincing that the Nazis believed they had revealed a secret plot and prepared for invasion in what would turn out to be the wrong place. To make the deception convincing, the fictitious Major Martin was equipped with ‘Wallet Litter’ comprising coins, stamps and St Christopher’s medal.

Planting the right ‘litter’ on the body of Major Martin was essential to the success of Operation Mincemeat. Coins and stamps proved critical to ensuring authenticity of the cover story.

Wartime documents held at the National Archives show that a Half Crown, two Shillings, two Sixpences and four Penny coins were part of the litter, together with four unused postage stamps.
