LORENZO LIBERTI – HEROIC FLAGS AND GIVE-A-BUCK

Lorenzo Liberti has just graduated high school, but his story is unique from those of most recent graduates. Not only is Liberti moving forward into adulthood with a diploma, but he has also established a successful non-profit organization, given away tens of thousands of dollars to combat veteran homelessness and other social crises, and graced several local, and one national, news programs to share his mission and seek support for his efforts.

Liberti grew up in a family that prioritized helping those in need. “My mother was homeless when she was growing up, so we always made it a mission to help the less fortunate,” he said of his upbringing. On one such occasion, Liberti met a homeless Vietnam War veteran, and

the experience changed his life. His eyes were opened to an ongoing issue for many who have served our country, and it sparked a desire in him to find a way to help. Having always wanted to serve in the military himself, Liberti holds a great reverence for those who sacrifice their lives to serve our nation.

In the summer between Liberti’s eighth and ninth grade years, his father urged him to find a project — something aside from video games and pestering him in his home office. A Go Army ad appeared as Liberti was searching for fatherand-son DIY projects. The ad made him begin to ruminate on the conversation he had with the homeless veteran he met 11 months prior. “My dad saw me looking at it and said, ‘Hey, wouldn’t BMAG | 11

it be cool if we did something to honor him?’,” he said. The Liberti’s had some spare wood lying around, and Lorenzo began to tinker. He began cutting, carving, torching, and staining, and two days later he had created the first, of what would become many, Heroic Flags.

Liberti’s brother loved his creation and requested one of his own. Neighbors became curious about the activity in the garage-turned-workshop and wanted one. “That’s when it clicked that I could make something bigger out of this. And more importantly, I can help this homeless veteran,” Liberti said of his early vision.

After about a month of flag-making and his first sale, Liberti reached out to the local nonprofit, Turning Points of Bradenton. Turning Points helps the homeless and has a yellow ribbon program for veterans in need. Liberti met a veteran named Edwin Robinson through Turning Points who invited him to a gala to play the National Anthem on his violin and auction off two of his flags. “I’m a kid. I didn’t know what to expect. He (Robinson) was walking by and saw the flag — one of the first ones I’d made — and he saw something in it, something in me, I guess,” Liberti said of the seminal meeting. The two flags that Liberti auctioned at the gala raised $1,300 each and filled his teenage heart with joy and possibility.

Liberti found himself with abundant idle time again at the onset of the pandemic in 2020. And again, his father encouraged him not to waste his time watching TV and lazing away like many of his youthful counterparts. Seeing the potential in what Liberti was doing, his father told him, “Hey! Now more than ever, you need to get ahead of everyone else. You should really strive to do something to change the world.”

With his mission set, Liberti found a new inspiration through his mother, a medical assistant at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Liberti realized something as he watched her motivate in the early mornings and come home in exhaustion late into the evening. “I noticed it’s not just my mother.

There are a lot of people out there who are sacrificing their lives, really — especially in the beginning of the pandemic — for 12 | BMAG

us. These new heroes, they didn’t wear camouflage, or carry guns, or go to foreign lands. These new heroes, like my mother, wore scrubs and face masks, and moved people from room to room trying to help them,” he said with great respect. In honor of his mother and those like her, Liberti made his biggest flag yet at seven feet and gifted it to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where it now stands proudly in the cafeteria.

The growing traction of his work led Liberti’s father to suggest that they reach out to some local news channels. Liberti had a full inbox in less than 24 hours from local stations expressing interest and an invite to be a guest on Fox and Friends. Liberti used his spot on national news to share his mission and announce his intention to create 50 three-foot flags, one to go in a hospital in every U.S. State, to thank and honor frontline healthcare workers. The GoFundMe that he shared to raise funds for the creation of the 50 flags ended up far surpassing his goal and allowed him to donate $30,000 of his surplus funds to Turning Points of Bradenton. In addition to more money than he’d asked for, Liberti also found himself with more orders for Heroic Flags than he could wrap his head around with less than 50 created at that point.

The momentum was undeniable, but amid all

the good he was doing, Liberti found himself at a disheartening crossroads. Regarding his generous gift to Turning Points, Liberti said, “I realized that however amazing and proud I was to be able to do that, that $30,000 didn’t end veteran homelessness. It put a band-aid on a really big bullet hole, and I felt a little crushed.”

Faced with the difficult realities of inciting large-scale social and economic change, Liberti set up a nonprofit of his own called Give-a-Buck. Give-a-Buck is devoted to its mission of not just alleviating but ending veteran homelessness. One measure they’re currently taking is to go around to schools and educate students on the problem of veteran homelessness.

Liberti has already exceeded many of his seemingly unattainable goals. With over $50,000 raised for homeless veterans, kids with special needs, foster children, and several other causes and thousands of flags created, sold, and donated, it seems that the sky is the limit for this young man and his altruistic mission. A message that Liberti has found helpful and hopes to share is that “If you aim low and hit, it’s much worse than to aim high and miss.”

Profits from Heroic Flags go to Give-a-Buck, which allows Liberti to work one-on-one with homeless veterans. He usually meets them through other nonprofits such as Turning Points. By working on a case-by-case basis, veterans who are close to having their needs met can receive the assistance they require, making support more impactful to each individual than a blanket gift might be capable of.

As we eagerly await this seasonal transition, let’s look at the developments that have unfolded over the past quarter in this growing area.

Farewell to Mixon Fruit Farm A sentimental farewell was bid to Mixon Fruit Farm, an establishment that had enriched the community for over eight decades. The announcement of its closure marked the end of an era, with the 39-acre property being put up for sale. This decision was driven by a combination of factors, including escalating insurance costs, stringent regulations within the citrus industry, and the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. Despite these challenges, Mixon Fruit Farm’s legacy will endure and be remembered as a cherished family favorite.

Mote Aquarium’s Enriching Addition In a move that underscores Bradenton’s commitment to education and marine conservation, Mote Aquarium introduced a novel marine science education and outreach center at Anna Maria City Pier. Operating daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., this program welcomes visitors of all ages to explore and learn about the local marine environment. A highlight of the center is the interactive touch pool, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the world of marine life. This initiative fosters learning and nurtures a deeper connection to the ocean and its inhabitants.

Island Gallery and Studios Moved!

Art enthusiasts celebrated the relocation of Island Gallery and Studios to 456 Old Main St., Bradenton, FL 34205. This fine art gallery, which had enriched Anna Maria Island for three decades, has now found its home in downtown Bradenton. The gallery operates as a cooperative, with its members collaboratively managing its operations. Art lovers can indulge in its offerings daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., where a diverse range of artwork awaits discovery.

A New Era of Ferry Service Local beachgoers and visitors are excited to welcome the introduction of the Island Ferry Service, boasting two 50-foot catamarans known as Miss Anna Maria and the Downtown Duchess. These vessels will provide transportation between Bradenton and select beaches on Anna Maria Island. Operating from Friday to Sunday between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m., the ferries offer hourly stops along the route, connecting downtown Bradenton Riverwalk to the shores of Anna Maria Island. A History

OF HALLOWEEN

Halloween has been celebrated for centuries the world over, and it’s known by many names, depending on who you ask. Though October 31 is widely known in the modern world as Halloween, a day for costumes and candy and horror films, it wasn’t always celebrated that way.

Traditionally, this holiday was a Celtic Pagan spiritual celebration known as Sahmain, the single most important event of the year.

It was, and is still, a day for those who worshipped the earth and its archetypal deities by having seasonal celebrations that aligned with celestial events. These include both equinoxes and solstices and the various dates halfway in between those, in which Samhain falls.

To the Celts, October 31 was a day to celebrate a new season and say goodbye to the abundance of summer, welcoming in darker days and colder nights.

Starting the night before, the veil between our earthly realm and that of the spirit world is the thinnest. And for those who believe, it makes it easier to see into the future.

This is how Halloween got its name; the evening prior was historically known as All Hallow’s Eve. The 24-hour day for Pagans parallels their calendar, or wheel of the year, making divination easier in the dark. Particularly at dusk when light 18 | BMAG

and dark become one, like during yearly Samhain, which lingers on the cusp of both the longer days and darker months, the dusk of a year is signaled.

This night was reserved for spiritual activities and divination.

The following day, Pagans focused their energy on the earthly realm and the day was devoted to preparing meals and festivities. As things changed over time due to religious oppression of the Celts, more modern traditions dropped the heretical night-before rituals, eliminating its spiritual aspects, and celebrated just on the 31st.

All Hallow’s Eve was then dubbed “Devil’s Night” in order to make Paganism and Celtic traditions seem dark-sided.

Celtic Pagan tradition was also very strongly tied to agricultural practices. Samhain was no different, as it served as a way to celebrate the work of the year, pay gratitude to the earth for an abundant harvest, and plan for winter months. Today, those traditions are still expressed in bobbing for apples, carving Jack-o-Lanterns, and having certain seasonal pies reserved for certain holidays.

The Celtic culture was largely and almost solely expressed with oral tradition, which preserved their history and expressed their culture. During the darker months, it was traditional to tell stories around a fire to pass time in the evening, especially Samhain through Yule, or the end of the year when days are shorter. And thus, as time went on, Halloween became associated with ghost stories and scary movies.

Today, you can celebrate Celtic Samhain traditions in several ways around Bradenton or at home if you prefer. Here are a few earth-friendly ways to party like the Pagans on Halloween:

CREATE AN ALTAR You don’t have to be Pagan to build an altar as a way to attract abundance or pay gratitude to the earth on Halloween. An altar is a sacred space in your home or outside where you place items that have significance to you and help you focus your intentions.

Some items Pagans would use are crystals, candles, flowers and herbs, images of ancestors or deities, or items that signify an intention you wish to set. You can clip images out of a magazine, collect natural items you find on a meditative walk, or use items from around your home that have special meaning. Spend a few minutes each day at your altar to ponder your intentions and help you stay focused on them, and change it up as you see fit, or seasonally like tradition calls for.

COOK SEASONAL FOODS WITH INTENTION Visit the Bradenton Farmers’ Market and choose some seasonal local vegetables to cook with on Halloween. The Celts had very strong ties to the earth and agricultural practices and their celebrations always included a feast made from the harvest of that season. Think root vegetables, cauliflower and broccoli, lettuce, Brussel sprouts, avocado, mushrooms, squash, and corn.

There are a lot of dishes you can prepare with those foods, so get creative and try something new. Make meal prep fun, but also mindful. As you prepare your meal, think about the season that just passed, and contemplate how you foresee the next one. Like the Celts, feel gratitude for the earth and its crops and, while you chop, think of behaviors and energy you want to eliminate going forward.

SHARE STORIES Telling ghost stories and watching scary movies in October is a popular way to spend the holiday.

To make it even more traditional, try making your own story to share each year. Getting to know your ancestry is a great place to start, and so is learning about local lore. Do a little research into the history of the home you live in or historical events in your area and tell those stories to anyone who will listen.

If hearing tales is more your style, take a ghost tour of Bradenton and learn all about the numerous haunted buildings and spirit sightings old Btown has to offer. From Main Street’s murders to pale apparitions at the pier, you’re bound to learn more about Bradenton’s past and the people who perished here.

Whichever way you choose to celebrate Halloween in Bradenton, consider where those traditions came from and how you might tap into your own ancestral energy to find new, personal ways that make the day your own. Be safe, and have a Merry Samhain!

PATRIOTIC RECIPES

S’mores Brownies Brownie Ingredients: ½ c vegetable oil 1 cup sugar 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 2 eggs room temperature 1 ½ cup all purpose flour ⅓ cup cocoa powder ¼ tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt Nonstick cooking spray

Topping Ingredients: 1 10-ounce bag miniature marshmallows 4 graham crackers 4 tbsp chocolate syrup ⅛ cup red and blue M&Ms ¼ cup coconut

Instructions: Preheat the oven to 350º.

Spray the sides and bottom of the pan well with non-stick cooking spray.

In a medium bowl, sift the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

In another medium bowl, add vegetable oil, sugar, and vanilla. Beat eggs into this mixture until well blended.

Slowly add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, about a half cup at a time, until everything is mixed well.

Pour the brownie mixture into a 9 x 9 pan and bake at 350º for 20-25 minutes. Check by inserting a toothpick to see if brownies are done. If the toothpick comes out clean, take them out of the oven to cool.

Allow brownies to cool slightly.

You will want to remove the whole pan of brownies from the pan once they are cool enough so they don’t break apart. If they stick a little, use a knife around the edges to loosen them. You are not cutting the brownies at this point. Let the brownies cool completely on a wire rack.

Place the whole brownie on a parchment lined cookie sheet.

Pour the bag of marshmallows on top of the brownies.

Break the graham crackers and sprinkle them over the marshmallows.

Add coconut.

Top with M&Ms. Bake at 350º for 10 minutes until marshmallows begin to melt.

It’s best to let these S’mores Brownies cool before eating.

Cut them into 16 pieces.

Tip: A plastic knife helps get cleaner cuts without sticking

Jell-O Parfaits Makes 6 ½-pint jars Ingredients: 1 6-ounce package strawberry Jell-O 1 6-ounce package blue berry-flavored Jello-O 4 packets unflavored gelatin 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk 5 cups boiling water Whipped cream Red sprinkles Half-pint mason jars Instructions: MAKE THE RED LAYER Whisk red Jell-O and one package of unflavored gelatin. Stir in 2 cups boiling water until gelatin is fully dissolved.

Pour ⅓ cup of red Jell-O into each half-pint jar to make the bottom layer.

Place the jars in the fridge to chill for 40 minutes, until the mixture sets. Begin working on the white layer.

MAKE THE WHITE LAYER In a separate bowl, pour in the sweetened condensed milk.

Add two packets of unflavored gelatin. Slowly stir in one cup of boiling water until powder is dissolved.

Leave out at room temperature until the red layer is ready. Once the red Jell-O is set completely, pour ⅓ cup of the white gelatin mixture over the top of the red.

Return the jars to the refrigerator to chill until the white layer is set, about 20 minutes.

MAKE THE BLUE LAYER Whisk together the blue Jell-O, one packet of unflavored gelatin, and 2 cups of boiling water.

Continue to stir until all the gelatin is dissolved. Let cool completely at room temperature.

Once the blue and white Jell-O are completely cool, pour the blue Jell-O over the white gelatin layer.

Return the jars to the fridge and let set for an additional 3 hours or more.

Top with whipped cream and red sprinkles.

With this issue being devoted to honor those who have served our country, we have a local hop that you really shouldn’t miss as it’s so close. Our skip is also still in the state, and one that’s a great family getaway with so much to do. Our jump is up the East Coast, but probably the most patriotic place in the country. Finally, this month we’re adding a leap with a very important piece in our country’s history, and the most extensive maritime invasion ever recorded. Have you guessed them all yet?

A HOP Just about an hour away in Hillsborough County, you’ll find Veterans Memorial Park and Museum.

The creation of the Park and Veterans Museum, named after Rear Admiral Leroy Collins, Jr., serves as a unifying space where both residents and visitors can come together to commemorate and pay tribute to veterans from every era. The park even has a Veterans Resource Center, offering services to veterans.

The park additionally functions as a venue for commemorations on Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and Patriot Day. It also hosts an array of gatherings.

Things to See There are 14 memorials to visit, including ones dedicated to World War I, World War II, and Vietnam.

You’ll also find statues and tributes honoring our veterans and the families many of them left behind to serve their country and keep us safe. The POW Memorial is truly moving.

Location: 3602 Highway 301 North in Tampa.

A SKIP The oldest city in the United States is actually right here in Florida. St. Augustine was founded 1565 by Admiral Don Pedro Menendez, sent by King Phillip II of Spain. His assignment? To expel the French from Florida and establish colonies along the coast. He made his base St. Augustine. You can still see remnants of those days by visiting the 315-year-old Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. Built with coquina, the fort was fire-resistant and impenetrable by enemy forces. On the second level of the fort, you can see where soldiers stood at guard, as well as the canons that were used to defend Castillo de San Marcos.

A JUMP Many of us took field trips to the District of Columbia when we were in school as it’s home to many of the most iconic American history sights in the country. Washington, D.C., founded in 1790, was established to serve as the nation’s capital by the U.S. Constitution. The location, along the Anacostia and Potomac rivers, was actually chosen by President George Washington.

Things to See As there is so much to see, it’s a great idea to take a tour so you can fit in as much as possible.

National Archives: See the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, U.S. Constitution, and the Magna Carta. 701 Constitution Ave. Tip: Arlington National Cemetery is less than a 15-minute drive from Washington, D.C., and definitely worth a visit. In fact, you can even get there on the Metro. Look for the Arlington National Cemetery Station. The Visitor’s Center is a short walk from the station. Take a guided tour to four major sites including the John F. Kennedy gravesite and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Don’t miss the changing of the guard, every day, at the top of the hour.

LEAP The three-month Battle of Normandy, lasting from June through August of 1944, was the largest recorded maritime invasion in history. We couldn’t very well call Normandy a jump, but it’s also not out of the question to visit. In fact, last year I took the Paris & the Heart of Normandy river cruise with Viking Cruises and was able to experience Normandy myself. Though there were many people who were on the cruise to experience the sights, food, and excitement of seeing so many destinations without having to worry about moving around from place to place, there were a handful of guests who were there specifically for Normandy. When our group was asked if anyone who had served in the armed forces would join them at the front for the special ceremony arranged by Viking, there was not a dry eye in the house when several men stepped forward.

returned to Normandy to revisit the graves of comrades and the shores where they fought almost 70 years ago.

Beth Deyo Discover Bradenton

When did you start the business? Why? I launched Discover Bradenton in March 2019. I had just left a 14-year career as a Certified Financial Planner™ and was starting a new career as a freelance writer. I wanted to publish a blog about things to do in Bradenton, but I was surprised to find that there really were no good places to find out what was going on in the area. As a 20+ year resident, I was also tired of always hearing that you had to go to Sarasota, St. Pete, or Tampa to find cool things to do – and I was frustrated that when there were things happening in Bradenton, I almost always heard about them a day or two after they had happened.

So, I saw a need and decided I would create a central hub where locals and visitors could “keep their finger on the pulse” of what was going on in Manatee County.

The site quickly became popular and started to get a lot of traffic. At the same time, I was learning a ton about marketing and saw an opportunity to use the platform to help local business owners tell their stories and grow their businesses. Being a small business owner myself, I saw first-hand how challenging it can be to market your business on a budget, so I wanted to create a system that could help small businesses expand their reach.

What is your connection to Bradenton?

I moved to Bradenton 27 years ago from Upstate NY. Originally, I just wanted to be anywhere in Florida, and happened to land in Bradenton. The plan was to decide where we really wanted to live and then eventually move, but we fell in love with Bradenton and never left.

What is your background? Is this business a result of your passion?

I have always had a passion for helping people and knew I wanted to own my own business. As Discover Bradenton started to evolve, I figured out a way to combine these things and also found a new passion – helping entrepreneurs grow and thrive.

What were your drives to start up?

Originally, I really just wanted to show people that Bradenton is a great place to live and be a resource for people wanting to know more about the area – but as I started to see how much the platform could help business owners, that’s when I really started to feel the drive to make the business as successful as possible.

Are the sacrifices worth it?

Absolutely!! My job is so rewarding. It seems like almost every day I talk to someone who either tells me how much they love reading the blog or that they were so excited to have found a great local event on the site – or I hear from a small business owner who is so thankful for the help I’ve been able to give. I work a lot of hours to make it happen and it seems like I always have a ton of balls in the air, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

What are some goals you hope to accomplish with your efforts?

One of my ultimate goals is to make Discover Bradenton a household name. I want everyone in the area to know that this is the place to go to find out what’s going on in

Manatee County. I want to continue growing and getting better so I can support more local businesses in an even bigger way.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I love supporting local businesses and feeling like I’m making a real difference in the community. I also love collaborating with business owners and local organizations to make Manatee County an even better place to live, work, and own a business.

Has it been everything you expected?

I didn’t really have a lot of expectations starting out, but I am incredibly pleased with how things have evolved. My team and I are constantly coming up with exciting new ideas to expand the business and offer new services. I’m always listening to feedback from my members and from the public and do my best to give people exactly what they’re looking for – and the fact that I have the opportunity to do that is just incredible.

What makes your services unique?

I believe Discover Bradenton is the most thorough source for information about things to do in Manatee County.

Not only do we help our members promote their events, but I also have team members who scan social media, the internet, and email newsletters daily to keep up with everything that’s going on. We post new community events almost every day, and we are always trying to be the first to distribute information about new businesses, local events, and more.

We also find unique ways for our members to spread the word about their businesses in ways that don’t necessarily “feel” like marketing, and we’re able to do it at an extremely affordable rate. When I look at the cost of many other marketing services, I know that what we’re doing is really different. We also now offer additional support through a series of business courses and a member website where members can connect, collaborate, and support each other, so we’re offering a really well-rounded support network for our members.

What advice would you give to someone starting their own business?

Make as many connections as you can! Get out there and network, get to know other business owners, and lean on people who have been where you are. Take advantage of all the great resources that are available to help support your business, like Discover Bradenton, The Chamber, SCORE, the Startup Circle, and more. Expect that it’s going to be hard, but if it’s something you really want to do, there is nothing more rewarding than building your own business.

Bridgette and Stephanie Garuti Phenix Salon Suites When did you start the business? Why? Our business started in 2018. We were looking for the right commercial real estate investment and we were deciding between salon suites concepts.

What is your connection to Bradenton? What were your drives to start up?

Stephanie lives in Bradenton! We loved this area, though when we first toured it back in the spring of 2019, there were no other salon suite concepts. Knowing what we know about how our business changes the lives of others in profound and unexpected ways, we were eager to find the perfect spot, centrally located for both our clients and theirs.

What is your background? Is this business a result of your passion?

I would say we are both extremely passionate about creating space for other business owners to thrive. We support entrepreneurs in the beauty, health, and wellness industry who are ready to run their own businesses, their 42 | BMAG

own books of clients, retail product lines of their choice, and have the freedom to do so on their own life schedules.

They manage their businesses, and we manage the facility and all of the day-to-day maintenance.

We as mothers were looking for a way to free ourselves from a traditional and corporate work cycle. When we found Phenix, it was the perfect opportunity to start a business that supports others starting their own!

Are the sacrifices worth it? Has it been everything you expected?

In terms of sacrifices to be successful, I feel it is somewhat similar to the popular phrase in motherhood, ‘the days are long but the years fly by.’

Since 2020, we have been working at this location and the development of Phenix Bradenton. It takes considerable time and effort on the forefront to find a location and negotiate terms. Then comes the construction process, which is always full of the unexpected. It almost feels surreal that we have been open since February of 2023!

What are some goals you hope to accomplish with your efforts?

We are committed to building a strong community of the most talented lifestyle professionals in Manatee County with incredible service diversity. Once inside a suite, we see professionals recommend other service providers such as nail techs, massage therapists, estheticians, barbers, hair colorists. Ultimately, our goal is to build the most inclusive culture that allows personal service providers to thrive.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I would say the most rewarding aspect of building and managing a Phenix Salon Suite would be the success stories. When professionals share with us their victories and triumphs and go for their dreams, it is so inspiring. The difference in the amount of money lifestyle professionals are able to make and save is astonishing. We win when our professionals win, and that positive, encouraging atmosphere from supporting and promoting others is absolutely incredible.

What makes your services unique?

We provide 24/7 access to the facility so licensees can set their schedule around their clients’ needs. Our laundry machine service is included in the licensing price, and many professionals have to either pay separately to use salons machines, take theirs home, or go to a public laundromat. Our water fountains have bottle refill service.

Access to fresh and filtered water is incredibly important to us! Professionals have free WiFi for their business and their clients.

What advice would you give someone starting their own business?

If you are interested in licensing your own salon suite, find influencers on Instagram and TikTok in your field that teach you all the unexpected pros and cons of making the leap into owning a business. There are many people out there who dedicate their lives to creating content which supports lifestyle professionals making the transition from employee to business owner. They detail and outline specifics for licenses, insurance, taxes, budgets, product offerings, service menus, and, since they have done it themselves, they are excellent teachers on the do’s and don’ts. There are a few that produce checklists, daily routines, review merchant service providers, CRM systems, and they do it in a way that is fun and engaging.

Dean Donnelly and Michele Angell Mean Deans Local Kitchen When did you start the business? Why? In the midst of the pandemic lockdowns in early 2020, we took a leap of faith and opened our restaurant. While I was managing a restaurant that had a less than ideal work culture, Michele, a pilot, witnessed the airline industry’s uncertainty as flights came to a halt. Notwithstanding the huge risk, our desire for increased quality time together and the freedom of self-employment propelled us forward.

So, in May 2020, we signed the lease and spent months transforming the space. Finally, in November of that year, we proudly opened our doors and have been going strong ever since.

What is your connection to Bradenton?

Having lived in Manatee County for the greater part of 20 years, with brief stints in Daytona Beach (my hometown) and Orlando, we chose to settle in Bradenton because we believe it encompasses the very best of what Florida has to offer in terms of lifestyle, culture, and activities.

What is your background? Is this business a result of your passion?

The restaurant business has been my sole profession since the beginning. I started as a dishwasher in a fivestar restaurant during my early teens. I was captivated 44 | BMAG

by the atmosphere of the kitchen, where the fast-paced environment constantly presented new opportunities for learning and growth. I worked for a wonderful owner/ chef who invested time in training me. I swiftly advanced from dishwasher to food prep, then chef, and eventually into management. Along my path, I’ve owned seven restaurants. Most recently, Michele and I owned Cedar Reef Fish Camp (with locations in Bradenton and Venice).

Food is absolutely my passion. Despite the long hours I spend cooking at the restaurant, when I do get a day off, I still find it relaxing to cook at home.

Are the sacrifices worth it?

The restaurant business is incredibly demanding. A normal seven-day work week (yes, seven) for me consists of leaving for work around 6:30 am and getting home maybe an hour or two before midnight. That is my lighter off-season schedule! Although the days are long and the sleep is lacking, nothing tops being your own boss and having an outlet to be creative.

What are some goals you hope to accomplish with your efforts?

We have a couple of exciting goals in the works. Our main goal is to establish a stronger presence within the

community. Our restaurant’s location isn’t in a tourist area or on a busy throughfare, so we rely mainly on word-ofmouth and loyal guests. Secondly, we’ve been working on expanding our restaurant by adding a banquet space/ second dining room and a full liquor bar. It has been a long process, but we are thrilled to announce that it is almost complete, and we can’t wait to unveil the enhanced space to everyone.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

Being a part of people’s lives and getting to know them has been incredibly rewarding. We’ve had the honor of celebrating numerous special occasions with our guests – from birthdays and weddings to heartwarming baby showers, retirements, graduations, and even triumphant victories over cancer. It’s a profound privilege to be chosen as a part of these important moments, and it goes beyond merely serving food; it’s about creating cherished memories for people.

Has it been everything you expected?

When we first embarked on this adventure, we didn’t know exactly what this restaurant would become. We knew we didn’t want to be pigeonholed into a particular theme or type of cuisine, hence the “Local Kitchen” descriptor. As we set out on the path of transforming the space, creating the

ambiance, and crafting a menu, it gradually evolved into something really special.

What makes your services unique?

We take pride in making food from scratch. We make every dressing, soup, sauce, and dessert in-house, which is a rarity these days, especially when you look at how the big chain restaurants operate. Additionally, we hold a strong belief in genuine hospitality, choosing to embrace our “guests” rather than considering people as mere “customers.”

What advice would you give to someone starting their own restaurant?

There is an old joke, “How do you make one million dollars in the restaurant business?” Answer, “You start with two million.” It’s crucial to recognize that the restaurant industry has one of the highest failure rates for entrepreneurs. To increase your chances of success, we recommend learning the ins and outs of the business while working for an independent operator who is willing to mentor you. Join industry-specific associations and take advantage of their training, workshops, and seminars. You have to believe in your core that with dedication, hard work, and a passion to pursue your dreams, you have the power to achieve anything you set your mind to.

When looking at this unique neighborhood, one is immediately struck by the stately tall structures that utilize a smaller footprint by going vertical. Two stories set on top of the garage make an efficient use of space. Painted in subtle coastal colors, the homes have white trim on the porch railings and trims that accentuate the serene palette against the backdrop of the endless Florida sky. But beyond their eyecatching façades lies a deeper purpose transcending the mere housing concept. Other features of this community include reclaimed water for community irrigation. Using energyefficient appliances and smart home features allows residents to remotely control their home’s lighting, temperature, and security systems. The builder has also partnered with WaterSense, which is an EPA-sponsored program. Another project by Pearl Homes is the MET, an affordable workforce housing-centered community located in Downtown Bradenton. The project will consist of 200 studios and one-, and two-bedroom units along 14th Street West. TRANSFORMING LIVES & BUILDING COMMUNITY ArtCenter Manatee has been transforming lives in Manatee County and surrounding areas for over 85 years. The city estimates that 30,000 cars go by our building every day. But the ArtCenter isn’t about the building. It’s about people. Over 35,000 people enter our doors every year. They come for classes, workshops, exhibits, and events, and to shop in the LiveArtfully market for unique handmade gifts. And they come back to connect, to explore, to learn, and to grow.

Take a look at our current building, then get ready for change, because the ArtCenter is changing. We are growing and reaching more people of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels. We’ve reached the point where we’ve had to turn people away and limit new class offerings. We knew we had to do something to accommodate the growth in our community and the increased demand for classes, so after a feasibility study, our Board voted to proceed with a capital campaign to build a new facility. The new twostory art center will be 28,000 sq. ft. and will feature one large gallery, nine classrooms, the gift shop, and expanded kitchen, office, and storage space. The new center will be renamed Herrig Center for the Arts and the new address will be 888 Avenue of the Arts (3rd Ave).

A key feature of the new Center will be a community park and sculpture garden that will welcome people as they drive over the 9th Street bridge into Bradenton. Landscape architecture improves urban spaces and the quality of life of the people living, working in, and visiting those spaces. It promotes sustainability and helps create healthier, more beautiful, and more livable urban areas. All are critical elements in making downtown Bradenton a destination for residents and visitors alike.

The arts are a powerful tool to help economies thrive and help individuals to connect and engage with each other across cultures. They drive businesses and residents to our city and help to attract and engage talent.

SARASOTA PARADISE CELEBRATE THEIR INAUGURAL SEASON BY: TRAVIS CORNWELL

The Sarasota Paradise, a dynamic and ambitious soccer team, officially wrapped up its inaugural season in July, playing in the highly competitive USL League Two. A proven developmental league in North America, the USL League Two (formerly the PDL) features 74 franchises in four conferences throughout the United States and Canada. These include 18 clubs that are owned and operated by a professional club, or that hold a partnership with a professional club. League Two has proven to be an important stepping stone for top professionals now playing throughout the world, with more than 70 percent of all selections in the MLS SuperDraft since 2010 having PDL experience, including 66 selections in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft.

The League Two season consists of 14 regular season matches for each team, seven home and seven away, and provides elite collegiate players the opportunity to taste a higher level of competition while maintaining their eligibility. In addition to league play, League Two teams compete in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as well as various exhibitions.

The Paradise is led by a dedicated ownership group. Marcus Walfridson aimed to bring high-quality soccer entertainment to Sarasota and foster a vibrant sports culture within the community. The team was committed to developing local talent and providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills, while also attracting talent from across the country and abroad. “Our goal was to create a soccer team that Sarasota can be proud of,” said Walfridson, owner of the Paradise. “We want to contribute to the growth of soccer in our region and provide an exciting and affordable entertainment option for families, soccer enthusiasts, and sports fans in general.”

With a strong vision for success, the team made its mark on the local soccer scene while captivating fans with thrilling matches. They finished the season with five wins, five losses, and two draws but were exceptional in front of their home fans, winning four out of their six home games.

The Paradise management actively built a talented roster of players. These players were college-age and came from all parts of the country. However, most players were locals from around the Manatee area, which meant a lot to come back home and play in front of family and friends again. “It was such an incredible opportunity to be back in Florida. I used to play at IMG Academy, so it was fun to come back and play here again,” said Central Midfielder Ben Goldberg.

The Paradise played their games at Sarasota High School and averaged close to 700 fans per game, exceeding a thousand a few times. There was tremendous support from the community in their first season and that is something that they look to build on next summer. “It is always difficult to bring something new and exciting to a city.

You never know what to expect and I cannot say thank you enough to everyone who was involved in putting this all together. All the players, staff, fans, and sponsors really were what made this season special,” said Walfridson.

With this special season in the books, the Paradise looks to continue that success next summer. “I hope to be back next season and be a part of this once more. I met a lot of close friends many of which I have played with or against during my college season.

Looking forward to sharing this experience with new teammates next year,” said Striker Fabrizio Bernal. While many new faces may appear on the roster next season, the team’s culture won’t change, and they look forward once again to seeing you cheer them on.

Bridging Generations, Enriching Community: Winter Wonderland, Reimagined

BY NICOLE MISKOVIC In the heart of our community, an annual event has woven its way into the tapestry of our holiday traditions. For 27 years, Winter Wonderland has been a beloved gathering that has been a hallmark of the holidays in Bradenton, inviting families, friends, neighbors, and visitors alike to celebrate the magic of a warm winter in Florida together. From its humble beginnings in 1996, guided by the vision of its founder Marianne Barnaby, Winter Wonderland has evolved into a heartwarming occasion that captures the magic of the holidays while reflecting the essence of Bradenton’s artistic and friendly nature.

This year, a new chapter unfolds for Winter Wonderland as Realize Bradenton, a local nonprofit dedicated to fostering a vibrant and culturally rich community, takes the helm of this time-honored event, offering a seamless blend of cherished traditions and exciting innovations.

A Glimpse into the Past: Inception and Growth In 1996, amidst a town that had been largely dismissed as merely a governmental center, a spirited community member, Marianne Barnaby, embarked on a mission to infuse culture and vibrancy into the core of Bradenton.

Reflecting on the sentiment about Bradenton, as well as the fact that the holidays were around the corner with no family-friendly community events planned, Barnaby set out to change that narrative.

She approached the mayor with the idea of organizing a downtown event that could attract people. She envisioned Christmas caroling, singing, and the creation of a snow mountain for the attendees. And with a go-ahead from the city, lots of creativity, and some community contributions, the inaugural Winter Wonderland was born.

A modest affair, the event spanned from 5 to 9pm, featuring face painting, local talents like the Manatee High Jazz Band, and our now-beloved “snow mountain” that captivated children and their parents. At 8:30pm, the crowd gathered near City Hall, caroling as they decorated a festive pine tree, marking the culmination of the evening’s festivities. And with more than 2,000 people joining the celebration —1,200 more than the anticipated 800 — the event was advocated to become Bradenton’s new annual tradition.

“It was started with the noblest of intentions. It was started as something that would bring the community together at the time of year when people like to be brought together,” said Barnaby. “And it’s for the kids.

To see them get excited doing something that they may have never done before.” Winter Wonderland achieved just that — uniting families, fostering community spirit, and igniting a spark of excitement in children.

Embracing the Future: A New Chapter with Realize Bradenton Leaving a rich history of community impact in its wake, Winter Wonderland has commenced its latest evolution as Realize Bradenton enters the stage, carrying the legacy of Marianne Barnaby’s vision into the future. Kristie Kindstrom, the coordinator for this year’s event, radiates with pride while discussing the honor of continuing Barnaby’s tradition.

“A lot of the elements of Winter Wonderland will look and feel and have the same spirit of what Marianne has cultivated,” said Kindstrom. “The familiar Main Street layout, with a stage on one end, hayrides on the other, and holiday market vendors lining the center, we want to preserve that atmosphere.”

Pairing with the success of the organization’s Bradenton Public Market, the event will also feature vendors offering seasonal delights, gifts, and ornaments, in addition to offering a platform for budding talents and entrepreneurs in our community to shine. New elements and surprises are also in store at every cross street for this year’s attendees, though the heart of Winter Wonderland will remain unchanged — a celebration of community, family, and togetherness.

Winter Wonderland will take place on Saturday, December 9, this year starting at 5pm, coinciding with the lighted boat parade. And as the event turns to a new chapter with Realize Bradenton carrying the torch, Marianne Barnaby’s dream of fostering a vibrant, healthy, and culturally enriched Bradenton remains steadfast.

“The goal for an event like this, and quite frankly for the events that Realize Bradenton hosts, is to bring people together. To create opportunities for everyone within this city to have a place to come,” Kindstrom said.

In an era when our community bonds are stronger than ever, Winter Wonderland stands as a testament to the power of shared experiences, the magic of the holiday season, and the unbreakable spirit of Bradenton.

FALLING FOR FESTIVALS BY: KENDRA GEMMA Some residents, especially recent transplants, may argue that we don’t have fall here.

But that doesn’t mean we pass up the chance to celebrate the season and its traditions.

Fall festivals in Manatee County feature pumpkins, hayrides, German beer, and – to keep things Florida-style – a haunted fish camp. So, pretend the air is crisp, pull on your favorite sweater (or costume), and head out for some autumn fun!

Pumpkins The pumpkin, the season’s most versatile vegetable, shows up everywhere from front porches to pies. You can also find it on local farms and pumpkin patches every October.

In its 32nd year, the Hunsader Pumpkin Festival draws visitors to its varied selection of its star attraction, naturally. The pumpkin display makes an adorable photo backdrop, and all the gourds are for sale. Bradenton’s Hunsader Farms has other fall fun on offer, like hayrides, kids’ pumpkin games, chainsaw sculpting, and a corn maze. Live music and performances, a craft show, and a petting zoo are among the additional activities that will keep you busy all day.

The festival takes place during the last three weekends of October. Admission is $15 for ages 11 and up and parking costs $5. Bring plenty of cash. It’s the only accepted method of payment for entry and parking.

Do your kids love trains? Instead of just driving to a store to pick out a pumpkin, hop aboard a locomotive at the Florida Railroad Museum in Parrish. The annual Pumpkin Patch Express transports passengers to and from the museum’s patch on its train. Choose from four ticket options – from first-class to coach. Once at the pumpkin patch, everyone will have an opportunity to participate in Lincoln Log Building, hayrides, games, and arts and crafts. Bonus – every child goes home with a pumpkin! Food and drink are available for purchase.

The Pumpkin Patch Express runs the last two weekends of October, with two rides per day.

The end of October doesn’t mean the end of all things pumpkin. Pumpkin Spice Fest will honor the orange vegetable on November 18 from 9 a.m. until noon.

Parrish’s Gamble Creek Farms, an organic, 26-acre farm, is the location of the free family event, where everyone can savor pumpkin-flavored baked goods and paint pumpkins. The festival will also feature live music and fall activities.

Oktoberfest You don’t have to travel to Germany to celebrate Oktoberfest. From October 13 to 15, Motorworks Brewing and New World Celts will host their unique Celtoberfest 8 Celtic Music & Beer Fest, a mashup of Germanic and Celtic cultures. So, slip into your lederhosen or kilt and gear up for a weekend unlike any you’ve experienced. Seven live bands and bagpipers will provide the entertainment, and Motorworks will serve up food specials and, of course, craft and imported beers. Shop the vendors and add a new stein to your collection. Kids – even your four-legged ones – are welcome.

Halloween and Day of the Dead Creepy, kid-friendly, or creative, Manatee County’s Halloween and Day of the Dead events suit any taste.

You’ve probably visited a haunted house or two in your life but you’ve likely never been to a Haunted Fish Camp. Jiggs Landing Outpost invites you to get spooked by their cast of characters: the Ghost Pirate of Ward Lake, the Creepy Camper, and the half-man/half-fish Fisherman. You’ll also encounter a few costumed critters, such as Evers Alligator and Cackling Crow. Take a guided tour to the end of the fishing pier where you might meet your host, the ghostly Old Man Jiggs, along with his faithful dog.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, treat yourself to s’mores over the campfire.

The Haunted Fish Camp runs October 27-29 from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission costs $5 per person. Children under 12 can attend for free.

The only scary thing about Lakewood Ranch’s BooFest is getting your kids fully dressed in time. The free festival gives families a safe way to trick or treat, with sponsors and merchants handing out goodies along Main Street. The children’s costume parade is the highlight of the night. Plan to stay awhile for the entertainment and food and drink vendors.

BooFest is on October 27 from 6 to 9 p.m.

The Village of the Arts celebrates the Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, every November. The Festival of the Skeletons Artwalk puts its own twist on the traditional Mexican holiday by honoring deceased artists with shrines and altars. The village also erects a memorial fence to commemorate loved ones who have passed. Living up to the festival’s name, skeletons roam through the streets, and you can take your own skeleton-related craft home with you. Feast on Mexican food and community spirit both days of the festival, November 3 and 4.

While fall in Manatee County brings no autumn-colored tree leaves or brisk air, you’ll find no shortage of ways to indulge in the season’s best rewards.

MY GHOST STORY

We are approaching the time of year when telling ghost stories is the most appropriate and fun activity. This time I would like to share my personal ghost story.

I grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, a few blocks from the Mississippi River. This was a very popular and favorite hangout for the neighborhood kids.

When I was 6, we moved to a bigger house due to the birth of my younger brother. We had bunk beds in our shared room. Of course, I slept in the top bunk. My brother was less than thrilled when I had the flu.

Shortly after moving into the house, I began to hear steps coming down the stairs from the upper floor. The only rooms up there were a room belonging to my older sisters on one side of the hallway, and the attic, which was on the other side.

At first, I thought the steps were from one of my sisters coming down to use the bathroom, but when the door leading to the upstairs opened and no one was there, I started getting scared.

Every night this would happen, and I would feel like someone was by my side of the bed staring at me. I would pull the covers over my face until I felt this presence had gone. At times, I would feel the covers tighten around me like I was being kept from moving and couldn’t breathe. Then the blankets would loosen, and I felt like I could breathe once again.

After my baby sister was born and my oldest sister moved out, I moved upstairs to share the bedroom with my next older sister. At night, I would hear the attic door open and footsteps come across the hall to my bedroom.

Initially, I only saw a black form that stood at the end of my bed. Then the form began sitting on the end of my bed. There was an obvious indent as though someone were sitting there, and it was impossible to move my legs against it as though a physical being were occupying that space.

There was never any verbal contact between us and no one besides me could see or feel him. In 62 | BMAG

those days, this was a topic you didn’t talk about publicly or they would have you go somewhere for treatment, so, in the interest of self-preservation, I kept my mouth shut.

One night, my sister and I were arguing about something stupid, as sisters sometimes do, and our mother yelled up the stairs, “If you don’t knock it off, I’m sending your father up.”

I walked out of our room and saw a figure that I thought could have been my father. I looked to the bottom of the stairs and saw both my parents standing there at the bottom of the stairs. I looked back up into the hallway and the figure was gone.

From that day on, I never again got scared. I would eventually let him sit on the edge of my bed until I fell asleep. He never once meant any harm to me. I believe he just wanted someone to acknowledge that he was still there.

After I moved out of the house, I decided to do some research and found that the original owner’s wife had died in the house. He couldn’t live without her, so he took his own life. He will remain there until he lets go of the guilt for taking his life and will be able to move on.

I hadn’t been to Minnesota in about 40 years until my daughter and I made a trip back. When we went by my old house, it still looked pretty much the same, and I saw the man standing in the attic window. Of course, my daughter asked me if I’d like to go visit him, to which I replied “no.” I had had enough of the spirit when I was younger and I still have no desire to revisit him.

This is what made me think of what happens to us after death and wanting to know more about the spirit world. Why they are still here, what unfinished business they had to take care of before crossing over, all the things that go with interacting with spirits. My curiosity made me want to study to become a paranormal investigator, which has led me to become a writer of ghost stories. Some are ones I have been told and others are about the spirits that I have met through the years.
