The City Of Jackson, NJ 08527
A suburban enclave for families, Jackson Township offers an ideal location. Located about an hour from New York City and Philadelphia, it is almost equidistant from Manhattan and the Jersey Shore. The township has an abundance of beaches, parks and golf courses. There is also a wide selection of restaurants, shopping centers and hotels. In addition, residents can enjoy the summer fun at Six Flags Great Adventure and Hurricane Harbor or find holiday bargains at the Jackson Premium Outlets. A large proportion of the area is devoted to agriculture. Cranberry farming became a major industry in Jackson in the 19th century, with 260 bogs and associated processing, packaging and shipping facilities. The success of this venture has been attributed to a variety of individuals, most notably John Webb, a retired seaman who sought to supply the vitamin-rich berries to Philadelphia sailors on long voyages. He devised a way to control water flow at the cranberry bogs and invented a method for sorting ripe and unripe cranberries. In the early 1900s, many of the cranberry bogs were converted to housing developments. This was aided by the development of the Garden State Parkway, which allowed people with jobs in North Jersey to move out of crowded urban areas and start families in more rural surroundings, with easy access to their employment. The development of the Jackson school district in the 1950s and 1960s was a further boost to residential growth in Jackson. The district consists of six elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools. In 2015, the district implemented full-day kindergarten.
