he AW22 buying season is almost upon us. And despite initial concerns surrounding the rapid rise in Omicron cases, the majority of trade shows and scheduled showroom dates look to be going ahead as planned.

Up-and-coming event Just Around the Corner kicks off the proceedings in Manchester at the end of this month (18-19 January) showcasing around 70 brands across womenswear and menswear. Buyers in the South will be able to visit a bigger version of the show taking place in London from 8-10 February.

Next, independent-focused show INDX Womenswear and Footwear is set to open its doors at Cranmore Park in Solihull from 2-3 February.

The buying event will return to its pre-covid format, offering an inspiring selection of brands with free parking and refreshments for visitors. Find out why you should visit on page 90.

In addition, Harrogate Fashion Week is taking place in the spa town from 6-7 February. Now in its sixth season, the show has been growing in popularity since its initial launch in 2019 and saw a 40 per cent increase in visitor numbers at its most recent edition in August. It offers an array of international womenswear and accessories brands with many new names signed up alongside its regular exhibitors. Turn to page 76 for our pick of must-visit stands.

Elsewhere, we uncover more promising new ranges for AW22 in our new collections edit starting on page 40. Whether you’re on the hunt for something fresh or a first look at what your favourite brands have in store, this issue should whet your appetite for the new season ahead.

9 WAYS TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS IN THE NEW YEAR

1. Enter an industry competition

Winning an award is always good PR. And triumphing in an industry competition means you’ll not only gain kudos from customers but from suppliers and other indies too.

Entries for the Boutique Star Awards 2022 open online next month and it’s completely free for retailers and brands. The competition launched in 2019 to celebrate fashion indies and their suppliers, covering a range of categories from Womenswear Retailer of the Year to Social Media Channel of the Year. The competition is open to retailers of all sizes and this year will see the introduction of five new awards, including New Independent Retailer of the Year for boutiques launched in the last two years and Sustainable Independent of the Year to recognise those making strides in reducing their environmental impact. Entries will open via boutiquemagazine.co.uk where indies and suppliers will be asked to write a synopsis of their business and provide supporting evidence to be in with a chance of winning. This year’s winners will be announced at a celebratory 86 | boutique. | JANUARY 2022

winners’ party in Central London this November, with full details set to be announced in spring.

2. Sell via a marketplace site

Joining a reputable online marketplace is a great way to reach new customers. Such sites often have high online marketing and advertising budgets to reach shoppers – allowing you to position your products to new buyers without a hefty outlay. Trouva has built itself a reputation as one of the best places to find unique products from independent shops in the UK. It promises a global customer base with 1.5 million visits each month. Plus, it says 80 per cent of boutiques receive an order within two days of going live (trouva.com/sell-with-us). Down Your High Street (downyourhighstreet. co.uk), meanwhile, offers a range of perks for its retail partners and indies can sign up for a free two-week trial.

Lastly, Bira has just launched its own independent-only online marketplace, Neartoo (neartoo.co.uk), which covers many categories alongside fashion and lifestyle. Retailers only pay 7

per cent commission on orders and minimal transaction fees.

3. Try out a B2B marketplace

Forward ordering has become even trickier for indies since the start of the pandemic - and many buyers are now regularly using B2B marketplaces to top up their stock. Such sites work a bit like stock houses, allowing buyers to select pieces that are available for immediate delivery. However, the deliveries often arrive directly from suppliers themselves. There are numerous benefits of saving budget to buy in this way, including the flexibility to jump on emerging trends (think loungewear in April 2020) and having more control over cashflow. British site TradeGala (tradegala.com) offers a constant stream of independent brands with fast turnaround times and low minimum orders. Meanwhile, European marketplace Ankorstore (ankorstore.com) launched just three years ago and now offers over 11,000 brands on its site. Sales volumes have soared by 950 per cent between

2020 and 2021, with orders being delivered to 200,000 indie stockists across the continent.

4. Offer more payment options

By now, pay later schemes (BNPL) have exploded over the past two years, allowing shoppers to spread the cost of their online purchases without paying any interest. Retailers are usually paid straight away for the transaction by the provider, which takes a small commission as its fee. The concept has been widely embraced by retailers of all sizes as it makes shopping more affordable for customers – especially for high ticket price items such as boots and winter coats. It’s particularly popular among the under 30s and those with tight finances as they no longer have to wait until pay day to buy the latest must-have. The main players in the BNPL market are Klarna, Clearpay and Laybuy, while PayPal and Monzo have also launched their own versions of interest-free credit. Klarna charges retailers around 3 per cent commission plus a £0.20 transaction fee. British firm Butter launched its own BNPL credit

card at the end of last year, enabling customers to use its payment service in-store.

5. Offer click-and-collect

Online shopping sky-rocketed during the lockdowns and many shoppers have held onto the new spending habits they gained during the start of the pandemic. Click-and-collect adds convenience to your service, meaning customers can browse your products online at any time of day and then arrange in-store pick up. Retail statistics show that many customers buy more when they visit a physical shop to collect orders, meaning there are several benefits to offering this service. Built into its Cloud POS, Citrus-Lime’s Ecommerce Click & Collect service provides a seamless shopping experience and useful alternative to home delivery. The service is easy to add to your site once set up with the company’s e-commerce system (find out more via citruslime. com/what-we-do/ecommerce).

Boutique Star Awards set to launch next month with brand new categories for 2022

N

ew categories have been announced for the Boutique Star Awards 2022, with entries set to open online in February.

First launched in 2019, the unique competition celebrates the success of the industry with 15 separate awards open to independent fashion retailers and their suppliers.

Among the newly added award categories includes New Independent of the Year - open to boutiques launched after January 2020 - and Sustainable Independent of the Year for retailers effectively minimising their environmental impact. There will also be three new awards for brands and suppliers including BlackOwned Brand of the Year, Accessories/ Footwear Brand of the Year and Sustainable Brand of the Year.

Entries will open online via boutique-magazine.co.uk at the beginning of next month where indies and suppliers will be asked to write a synopsis of their business and provide supporting evidence to be in with a chance of winning.

The winners will be announced at a celebratory winners’ party taking place in Central London this November, with the full details set to be confirmed in spring. The inaugural awards ceremony took place in October 2019 at a party held at rooftop venue The Deck inside London Southbank’s iconic National Theatre.

The Boutique Star Awards are open to all fashion and lifestyle independents across the country operating bricks-and-mortar businesses as well as brands, suppliers and individuals. It is the only awards of its kind in the UK and highlights the triumphs of fashion indies while giving recognition for their work and achievements.

“We’re thrilled to be back for 2022 and can’t wait to celebrate all the triumphs and achievements of indies and their suppliers after such a challenging period,” says publisher Julie Neill. “We’re inviting retailers and brands of all sizes to enter to be in with a chance of being short-listed for a prestigious award.”

Top Drawer postpones SS22 edition in response to Omicron rise Following the rapid rise in Omicron cases in the UK and Europe, the organisers of Top Drawer have announced the show’s next edition will be postponed until 20 – 22 February.

The long-standing trade event, which specialises in homeware and gifts, was originally scheduled to take place this month at London’s Olympia.

“This is really disappointing news for all of our community,” says show director Russell Rule. “However, the wellbeing of everyone involved

in the event is paramount. We are committed to bringing retailers Top Drawer SS22 in a safe environment that you can feel comfortable attending for your yearly buying needs. With this in mind, we feel it’s the right decision to postpone to a later date in the same buying season.

We will always work in the best interests of our exhibitors, visitors, contractors and staff and we believe a safe and successful event can be run in late February 2022.”

Spring Fair and Moda to go ahead as planned, confirm organisers The Hyve Group has confirmed that next month’s Spring Fair and Moda will go ahead as scheduled, with over 1,000 exhibitors expected to showcase their new ranges at NEC Birmingham on 6 – 9 February. Anyone entering the venue will be required to show a valid Covid-19 pass or negative lateral flow test result while all attendees will need to wear a face mask unless they are exempt.

Copenhagen Fashion Week announces AW22 schedule Copenhagen Fashion Week has announced its AW22 show schedule taking place in Copenhagen from 1 – 4 February. UK’s first BNPL credit card allows shoppers to spread cost of in-store purchases Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) provider Butter has launched the UK’s first physical credit card that allows shoppers to the spread the cost of instore purchases for the first time.

It says around 65 per cent of the UK population owns a credit card with the average household estimated to be in £2,085 worth of credit card debt. However, the number of credit cards issued has fallen by -3 per cent in a single year.

1. Enter an industry competition

Winning an award is always good PR. And triumphing in an industry competition means you’ll not only gain kudos from customers but from suppliers and other indies too.

Entries for the Boutique Star Awards 2022 open online next month and it’s completely free for retailers and brands. The competition launched in 2019 to celebrate fashion indies and their suppliers, covering a range of categories from Womenswear Retailer of the Year to Social Media Channel of the Year. The competition is open to retailers of all sizes and this year will see the introduction of five new awards, including New Independent Retailer of the Year for boutiques launched in the last two years and Sustainable Independent of the Year to recognise those making strides in reducing their environmental impact. Entries will open via boutiquemagazine.co.uk where indies and suppliers will be asked to write a synopsis of their business and provide supporting evidence to be in with a chance of winning. This year’s winners will be announced at a celebratory 86 | boutique. | JANUARY 2022

winners’ party in Central London this November, with full details set to be announced in spring.

2. Sell via a marketplace site

Joining a reputable online marketplace is a great way to reach new customers. Such sites often have high online marketing and advertising budgets to reach shoppers – allowing you to position your products to new buyers without a hefty outlay. Trouva has built itself a reputation as one of the best places to find unique products from independent shops in the UK. It promises a global customer base with 1.5 million visits each month. Plus, it says 80 per cent of boutiques receive an order within two days of going live (trouva.com/sell-with-us). Down Your High Street (downyourhighstreet. co.uk), meanwhile, offers a range of perks for its retail partners and indies can sign up for a free two-week trial.

Lastly, Bira has just launched its own independent-only online marketplace, Neartoo (neartoo.co.uk), which covers many categories alongside fashion and lifestyle. Retailers only pay 7

per cent commission on orders and minimal transaction fees.

3. Try out a B2B marketplace

Forward ordering has become even trickier for indies since the start of the pandemic - and many buyers are now regularly using B2B marketplaces to top up their stock. Such sites work a bit like stock houses, allowing buyers to select pieces that are available for immediate delivery. However, the deliveries often arrive directly from suppliers themselves. There are numerous benefits of saving budget to buy in this way, including the flexibility to jump on emerging trends (think loungewear in April 2020) and having more control over cashflow. British site TradeGala (tradegala.com) offers a constant stream of independent brands with fast turnaround times and low minimum orders. Meanwhile, European marketplace Ankorstore (ankorstore.com) launched just three years ago and now offers over 11,000 brands on its site. Sales volumes have soared by 950 per cent between

2020 and 2021, with orders being delivered to 200,000 indie stockists across the continent.

By now, pay later schemes (BNPL) have exploded over the past two years, allowing shoppers to spread the cost of their online purchases without paying any interest. Retailers are usually paid straight away for the transaction by the provider, which takes a small commission as its fee. The concept has been widely embraced by retailers of all sizes as it makes shopping more affordable for customers – especially for high ticket price items such as boots and winter coats. It’s particularly popular among the under 30s and those with tight finances as they no longer have to wait until pay day to buy the latest must-have. The main players in the BNPL market are Klarna, Clearpay and Laybuy, while PayPal and Monzo have also launched their own versions of interest-free credit. Klarna charges retailers around 3 per cent commission plus a £0.20 transaction fee. British firm Butter launched its own BNPL credit

Online shopping sky-rocketed during the lockdowns and many shoppers have held onto the new spending habits they gained during the start of the pandemic. Click-and-collect adds convenience to your service, meaning customers can browse your products online at any time of day and then arrange in-store pick up. Retail statistics show that many customers buy more when they visit a physical shop to collect orders, meaning there are several benefits to offering this service. Built into its Cloud POS, Citrus-Lime’s Ecommerce Click & Collect service provides a seamless shopping experience and useful alternative to home delivery. The service is easy to add to your site once set up with the company’s e-commerce system (find out more via citruslime. com/what-we-do/ecommerce).

6. Try a different trade show Are you looking for the ultimate new brand for 2022? Visiting a new

Originally an up-and-coming menswear show, Just Around the Corner (JATC) hosted its first womenswear event in London last summer. This January and February will see it merging both categories under one roof with two dedicated events in Manchester and the capital. Buyers will be able to discover 250 brands showing across two different venues, with over 40,000 sq ft of collections across both events.

Alongside clothing, there will be dedicated zones for responsible brands as well as footwear and accessories.

Plus, buyers will also be treated to complimentary refreshments (register for free entry via justaroundthecorner. co.ukregister). Now in its sixth season, Harrogate Fashion Week is growing in popularity among buyers and brands.

Visitors are offered free parking and cloakroom facilities while they peruse the latest collections from some of the industry’s best-loved brands (6-7 February; register for free entry at harrogatefashionweek.com).

7. Social commerce

The number of people buying directly on social media is set to soar in 2022.

Why? Because it provides a consistent shopping experience right from when customers discover your products to making a transaction. Instagram is one of the most popular channels, with e-commerce specialists such as Shopify helping retailers showcase their products to one billion potential customers. Such services make it easier to run your omni-channel operation as your inventory is linked online and in your physical store. There’s a free 14day trial for retailers that want to start selling on social media, so you can test the water without making a financial commitment (find out more at shopify.co.uk).

8. Promote Shop Local

Supporting local businesses became a movement in its own right last year as shoppers sought out indies over corporate giants. Boutiques 88 | boutique. | JANUARY 2022

can really tap into this consumer behaviour in 2022 by teaming up with other local businesses, using corresponding hashtags on social media and adding promotion materials to store windows and displays. Online marketplace Down Your High Street (downyourhighstreet. co.uk) runs ongoing campaign #thinkwhereyoushop to encourage shoppers to use alternatives to online giants. Later in the year, indies can take part in Colour Friday, which launched as part of #CampaignShopIndependent in November as the antidote to Black Friday (free downloads available via holly.co). There’s also £10,000 up for grabs for the winner of its High Street Shop Award, announced in December. Of course, Small Business Saturday is also a great campaign to get involved with as sponsor American Express offers money back on shoppers’ spending as part of its Shop Small scheme. 9. Operate more sustainably

Shoppers are expected to become more conscious this year, choosing retailers with values over those that are just chasing profits. But you don’t have to completely overhaul your business to keep up. Instead, consider small steps you could make to minimise your carbon footprint or waste contribution.

For example, offering an eco-friendly delivery option might be appreciated by some shoppers – and they may be willing to pay more too. Green Courier in London, for example, operates with a fleet of electric and low emission vehicles to reduce its customers’ contribution to climate change (greencourier.co.uk). ocated in the Cornish town of Nansledan, Love of Lemons blends the old and the new with its curated line-up of vintage gems and sustainable brands. The bricksand-mortar boutique is a new enterprise, having only opened its doors in November 2021. Flanked by the area’s other indie newbies, it forms part of a new development that’s being spearheaded by the Duchy of Cornwall. Already, its concept is being lapped up by the 104 | boutique. | JANUARY 2022

town’s conscious shoppers who are increasingly favouring local enterprises over corporate giants.

The boutique is the brainchild of former SEN teacher Bex Osman, who has a penchant for vintage clothing and making other people happy.

Its concept is an extension of her own personal style, which sees her combining socks and Birkenstocks with vintage Levi’s and old ‘grandmastyle’ cardigans. “I love vintage clothing but wearing it head-to-toe doesn’t always work,” she says. “I like

to put modern styling into it to bring old pieces back to life.

This is where the idea came from for Love of Lemons.”

The business began life online in May 2021, just as the UK was emerging from its third national lockdown. While it initially began selling mostly vintage pieces, the store and website now also stocks around 20 brands, which are merchandised as stories with new and old garments presented together.

“That’s really key for me as it’s how

I create my outfits,” says Osman.

Shoppers can find a selection of vintage Italian skirts, knitwear, denim and retro jeans that can be styled with its new tops, blouses, jewellery and outerwear. “It’s a unique curation of pieces that comes from my love of fashion and styling,” she adds.

An education

Having initially studied Fashion Styling and Photography at the London College of Fashion, Osman had a change of heart about her career during a stint travelling around Australia: “I’d specialised in photography and at that time everything had just started to go digital,” she says. “So, when I came back to the UK I decided to re-train in Early Years and went into teaching, eventually working with children with special needs.”

The would-be indie owner found the role incredibly rewarding. However, it was both emotionally and physically draining, too. And after becoming a mum, she eventually found herself reaching burnout. So, when an opportunity came up to work at a

new local independent lifestyle store in Cornwall, she seized the chance to go back to her first love. “I began working on the shop floor, but my role developed quickly,” she says. “Soon I was managing the boutique, building its social media presence, doing styling appointments with customers and then going to London on buying trips.

It was really exciting as I was able to watch it grow from a start-up into an established business.”

Fast forward to eight years and a pandemic later and Osman found herself wanting to pursue a longharboured dream of running her own business. “Everything else in my life felt settled and I realised it was very much a case of ‘now or never,’” she says. So last spring, Love of Lemons launched its online shop selling Italian and French vintage pieces.

During this time, Osman was also avidly searching for unique brands that would complement her one-off finds as well as tying in with her own conscious ethos. “The sustainable side of the business is so important to me,” she says. “Everyone here in Newquay is really environmentally conscious, so whatever Love of Lemons has on

sale really needs to reflect that.”

Just five months after its initial launch, the boutique opened its physical store selling vintage picks alongside womenswear and accessories from largely unknown brands with interesting back stories.

“I love to discover new designers that no one else has heard of,” says Osman.

“I’ve tried to create my own buying journey, avoiding trade shows and finding suppliers that are small and that most people won’t have heard of.”

Conscious brands

The owner has found many of her brands while travelling. Love of Lemons currently stocks lifestyle products from Hossegar-based French brand The Nomad Society, which produces hand-poured candles in small batches. It also carries vegan beauty brand Lucky Cloud, meanwhile, whose range is made by hand in Scotland using plantbased ingredients. Shoppers can also buy compostable and sustainable greetings cards by UK brand Lauren Marina and well-priced accessories from Netherlands’ label Monk and Anna, which is run by three creatives.

SHOP TALK The first fashion brand to come on board with Love of Lemons was Le Bonne Shop from California, which offers vintage tees, organic cotton basics and socks. The boutique also stocks timeless feminine pieces from Spanish labels Yarse and ese O ese as well as French knitwear – offered at a slightly high price point – from Las Racines du Ciel. Five jeans is also a core brand for the store, while it is also the UK’s only stockist of Byron Bay-based brand Thrills, which offers vintage-inspired styles in recyclable fabrics. Vintage dresses at the boutique start from around £30 while new knitwear made from organic alpaca wool costs up to £160 per piece. “I do try and keep our prices affordable, but we all like a treat now and again so investing in some beautiful key pieces makes sense,” says Osman.

Most recently, Love of Lemons introduced Scottish homewares brand the Tartan Company, which uses recycled garment fabric to slow down landfill. “This is another awesome independent family-run brand,” Osman says. “The concept of using recycled materials sits really well our ethos. All the frills for its blankets are also sewn by women, not machinery – a conscious decision so it can employ more people.” Next season, Swedish footwear brand Lotta Clogs will also arrive at the boutique, with the owner bringing in authentic handmade clogs made from ethical Swedish Alder and vegetable-tanned nubuck leather.

Vintage picks

But Love of Lemon’s biggest USP is its selection of vintage pieces, which Osman handpicks herself to create a truly unique line-up. The owner visits vintage wholesalers in London at least once each month, riffling through huge bins of clothes to find the perfect pieces. “I find it so exciting, and I know exactly what I’m looking for,” she says. “I feel my way through the bins, using my hands to pick out the pieces I like the feel of before pulling them out to look at them visually. I can tell straightaway if they 106 | boutique. | JANUARY 2022

will sit well with the rest of the shop – and I only ever buy pieces I love and would wear myself.”

While Love of Lemons does stock some branded vintage when available such as Burberry macs and Converse trainers, Osman says she usually prefers to choose garments based on their own merits: “With unbranded vintage you get a lot more detailing and craftsmanship,” she says. “Some things have even been handmade, with really gorgeous cuts and darts and pleats in beautiful places.

Attention to detail is really what I’m looking for.”

Happy place

But while buying is clearly a real passion for the boutique owner, Osman says her biggest sense of achievement comes from seeing her customers fall in love with her choices. For this reason she decided to open her physical shop in November instead of selling exclusively online: “I have an invested relationship with all my vintage pieces so selling them gives me so much joy,” she says. “Sometimes people are so excited that they walk out wearing them – it’s so lovely to be able to share the love I have for those pieces.”

The physical boutique also allows Osman to spend time styling her customers – something she felt she wasn’t able to replicate properly online: “I like to see people and understand their shape and personality,” she says. “Clothes can give build a person’s confidence and self-esteem – I can tell if they’re happy or not as soon as they’ve put something on. My main aim to make sure every person leaves the shop feeling happy.”

As a new boutique entering another uncertain new year, Love of Lemons may have a difficult period ahead. But with a strong ethos and USP, shoppers are already buying into its concept - and that looks set to continue.

So, for Osman, 2022 will be about strengthening what’s already in place and growing her business organically.

“I’m not going to rush, I’m going to go with the flow and listen to my

customers,” she says. “It’s early days, but customers are really enjoying what’s on offer. I want to make sure I stay true to my original ethos and focus on the road ahead instead of looking at what everyone else is doing. I don’t want to do anything that could dilute my dream.”

fter the success of last year’s return of trade shows, in-person buying is set to make a comeback for 2022.

According to show organisers, preregistration numbers are showing better than expected signs, which is welcome news for the entire industry.

“Although we are still facing challenges, the rollout of boosters – which is clearly keeping things under control – is giving buyers confidence compared to the uncertainty we’ve had since the pandemic began. The desire for face-to-face connection hasn’t changed. In fact, with the complexities and challenges all industries are facing in terms of global supply chain issues, it’s even more important than ever to see real people again and away from a screen.

“At Capri we polled a random selection of customers and I also spoke with other brand owners I know in the industry. The clear message is that people want to meet in person again and there’s a tone of optimism that I haven’t heard since before the pandemic.

“The popularity of smaller focused trade shows boomed in 2021 and signs are even greater for 2022. The industry has adjusted its processes to ensure the utmost safety for attendees and exhibitors alike, while keeping a close watch on ongoing developments. Alongside this, sales representatives will take their collections on the road to see customers while brands are 108 | boutique. | JANUARY 2022

organising local hotel show events where buyers can view collections (sometimes side by side with other labels) in a safe, convenient and controlled environment.

“Covid is not going away and as I’ve said many times in past issues, the quicker we accept and embrace the changes it has created the more successful we will become. We are learning to live with it now and the vaccination programme and testing are keeping the events industries moving forward and opening up. The impact of covid is clearly starting to slow. People will be talking less about the ‘return to in-person events’ as we are already there.

“Data shows that attending an in-person event is no riskier – less

risky in most cases – than going to a supermarket, school or other essential daily activity. This is all providing attendees and exhibitors are 90 per cent vaccinated. Live events are a critical part of the global economy, and due to the pandemic, there is a lot of pentup demand and momentum for experiences. The value created from live face to face events is irreplaceable. As we all know, it’s a powerful way to generate sales and drive brand awareness and loyalty.

“While no one can predict or guarantee what the coming year will bring, I do know that most of us are optimistic and determined to get our industry where it needs to be as quickly as possible.”

adly, we have already begun 2022 with a degree of uncertainty due to the Omicron variant. By now all retailers are used to implementing covid regulations in their business and hopefully the government actions on vaccine boosters will allow us to return to more normal times quicker than before and allow retailers to continue to re-build their businesses.

“Even without a new variant to deal with we were already looking at 2022 with a degree of trepidation.

This is due to the cumulative negative impact of business costs increasing including wages, energy, supply chain inflation, tariffs and business rates. Bira is in constant dialogue with BEEIS (department for businesses) to find ways of reducing this cost burden which may hold many businesses back this year.

“Despite this nervousness about the rising business costs, I believe that there is room for optimism in 2022.

On a positive note, we secured more investment in ‘place management’ in 2021, and the budget contained commitments to significant investment in public transports and high street infrastructure. We have also asked for more investment in skills for retail and the funds for improving both management and technology skills are still available. The final positive news from the 2021 budget was the retail discount, set at 50 per cent for 2022/23. While this is an increase in real terms, it is still very welcome and the new eligibility criteria will allow 110 | boutique. | JANUARY 2022

thousands of independent businesses to claim this discount.

“I believe that these government measures will enable retail businesses to take advantage of the continued resurgence in local shopping in 2022.

This has been one of the few truly beneficial trends from the pandemic, and all the research suggests it is set to continue. However, local shops cannot take this demand or their customers for granted, so retailers need to re-double their social media activities and deliver great service to customers to really stand out.

Customers want to shop local, but still need help to find out what’s available locally. This is why Bira has developed new online trading platform Neartoo, which has been designed for local shops to use for low cost.

“Invariably 2022 will also see the introduction of new technology, much of which will be aimed at reducing the interaction between customers and shop workers. It is

hard not to admire this technology, and yet I feel that it opens up a real opportunity for the smaller retailer. While large companies turn to robotic automation, indies can still offer that personal service that will become an even stronger USP. Retail is still a people business and independents can do it better than any large chain.

“There is no doubt that 2022 will be a period of change for retailers.

And whatever changes businesses are considering, they need to be done ‘through the lens of sustainability’.

Being a sustainable retailer is really important, and small shops are in a good position to lead the way. It is often said that fashion has a high carbon footprint, but more and more sustainable products are being made at affordable prices. Those retailers who see sustainability as an opportunity as opposed to a cost will be the winners.

I hope 2022 has less disruption, but I urge all retailers to be disruptive with the way they do business.”

What type of store is your ideal stockist?

How does it feel to be a black fashion designer in a time when black-owned brands are finally starting to get the recognition they deserve?

I’ve always wanted to work in fashion. In fact, I’d always wanted to work for Tommy Hilfiger and I ended up interning with the children’s and women’s design Studio. The amount of support and the knowledge I gained there still amazes me.

When did you launch your eponymous label and what’s the story behind it?

After working in NYC I decided to come back to Miami and start working on my own company.

There was a moment where my dream shifted from wanting to work for a particular brand to wanting to create my own.

Maybe it’s because I had already accomplished that goal.

How would you describe your brand’s aesthetic?

It’s minimal, a bit grunge and actually just cool. My brand is very much influenced by Miami, even though it isn’t the type of fashion 112 | boutique. | JANUARY 2022

that you might typically associate the city with.

How important is sustainability to you as a brand owner?

Sustainability is immensely important to me personally and with everything I do. Being intentional about the entire business from fabrication, logistics and partners keeps the brand focused.

Knowing that we live in a global society and all of the environmental costs that come along with that forces me to learn new ways of how to offset these costs.

Which collection are you currently working on and what key pieces can we expect to see coming through in 2022?

I’m working on my second collection, with the first half expected to be out during March time. There will be pieces for lounging in and pieces for when you’re ready to venture out.

They’ll also be a few for somewhere in between.

It’s amazing to see so many talented designers in all different areas.

There weren’t many when I was growing up and it’s special to see people you can identify with inside a space you want to inhabit.

How difficult is it for people of colour to be successful in the fashion industry?

Do you think this is changing for the better?

I think it is relative. Yes, this industry can be difficult to be successful in but if you are lucky enough to find your support and your people then you can thrive. Early on I was fortunate to meet people along my journey that were so supportive. I’ve only known the fashion industry through this current time so I can say it’s been progressively getting better and better.

How can white people be allies for black creatives working in the fashion sector?

I believe it all starts with being seen. Let us know you see us and then from there offer support in the capacity that is needed. One step at a time.

What are your hopes and dreams for the Shahini Fakhourie label in 2022?

This year will see us launching in UK stores and from there we look forward to doing collaborations and trying additional avenues for the brand.
