A

rtificial Intelligence (AI) is generating a lot of excitement at present – and while there is mounting anxiety about how it could develop in the future, its emergence is undeniably fascinating.

In retail, AI could transform the daily operations of independent retailers and suppliers - from crunching detailed reports in seconds to providing viable 24/7 customer service via a chatbot. For designers, it could even be used to create garments and collections based on buyers’ exact specifications.

Some fashion brands have already hit the ground running with AI. City Goddess, for example, has developed a new cutting-edge app that will offer stockists personalised trend suggestions, sales tips, smart product recommendations, styling advice and insights into social media trends.

CEO Yathu Kanagaratnam says it will “revolutionise the operations of independent boutiques” and “bring a new era of sales and profitability to the ever-evolving fashion industry” (read more on page 20).

Meanwhile, Sheffield brand Jessica Flinne Fine Jewellery is also using AI in some of its business operations, such as enlisting the help of ChatGPT for faster copy writing.

Founder Jessica Flinn-Allen weighs up some of the pros and cons (and explains why she finds AI in retail

Of course, AI inevitably conjures up apocalyptic scenarios for most people. But the real concern for humanity largely refers to Artificial General Intelligence (the type portrayed by science fiction), which doesn’t actually exist yet. That’s not to say it isn’t coming. According to some experts, powerful systems that are ‘generally more intelligent than humans’ could soon be a reality.

And for the 1,000 tech leaders who recently signed an open letter urging for a pause on its development, the risk to civilisation is very real.

Hopefully, the main priority will be safety and changing the world - and retail - for the better.

verybody seems to be talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the moment. I recently attended a series of seminars and there is no doubt that it has emerged as a game-changer in various industries. At first it may seem that it is only something for the big businesses, but I can assure you that it will make a difference to independent retailers. Twelve months ago, very few of us knew anything about AI. Now it is at the forefront of technology developments and is expected to evolve at an even faster pace.

Most of the focus has been on ‘generative AI’ with the likes ChatGPT. This is a piece of technology that will answer questions in detail, in a particular style, using the number of words requested by the user. It was in the headlines because some students are using it to complete homework projects. It is clever – no doubt. From a retailing point of view, it is being used to create content for marketing and social media channels, enabling retailers to better engage with existing

and potential customers by providing creative content. The more it is used, the smarter it becomes.

But it is not just in terms of generating content that AI can make a difference. AI is already being used in so many other ways. One of the key areas where AI can benefit independent retailers is inventory management. Keeping track of stock levels, predicting demand, and optimising inventory can be challenging for small businesses.

However, AI-powered inventory management systems can analyse historical data and market trends to provide accurate demand forecasts.

This enables retailers to optimise their inventory levels, reduce waste, and improve profitability.

AI can also revolutionise customer service. Chatbots and virtual assistants powered by AI can handle customer queries and provide personalised recommendations. These intelligent systems can understand natural language and engage in meaningful conversations, offering customers

a seamless and efficient shopping experience – like they are ‘talking’ to a real person. Retailers can leverage AI to provide 24/7 support, address customer concerns promptly and enhance customer satisfaction.

An increasingly important business skill is the management of data, and AI can make a tangible difference in this respect. AI has the power to collect, analyse and draw conclusions from much more data more quickly than ever before.

Understanding customer and business data will allow the business owner to make better informed decisions based on consumer behaviour, preferences, and buying patterns. These insights can also be used to tailor marketing campaigns, develop pricing strategies, and offer personalised recommendations to customers.

In conclusion, AI has the potential to revolutionise the world of retail - and not just for the large chains. From inventory management and customer service to data analysis and automation, AI technologies can empower independent retailers to compete with larger players and deliver exceptional customer experiences.

It is not a subject that can be ignored, and indie retailers cannot afford to say that artificial intelligence is not applicable for them. It’s already being used on a widescale without us knowing. Judging panel announced for Boutique Star Awards 2023

S

unday Best CEO Jan Shutt will join fashion agent Diane Sykes and small business expert Catherine Erdly to judge the Boutique Star Awards 2023. Sass and Edge cofounders Sally Gott and Rachel Hunt, Bira CEO Andrew Goodacre and Boutique magazine editor Gemma Ward are also confirmed for this year’s panel.

Retail veteran Jan Shutt has been running a successful womenswear independent in Rawtenstall, Lancashire, for over 50 years.

Inspired by Biba on Kensington High Street, she first opened Sunday Best in 1971 and has been at the helm ever since. Today she is an industry expert while her business is highly regarded as one of the best fashion indies in the UK. Joining her are Sass and Edge cofounders Sally Gott and Rachel Hunt, who opened their award-winning Winchester-based boutique in 2017.

Armed with many years’ experience in retail, styling and management, the

duo brings a wealth of expertise to this year’s panel.

Bira CEO Andrew Goodacre will also judge the awards. With numerous years’ experience in the small business membership sector, he has devoted his career to strengthening Britain’s high streets. Andrew has appeared before numerous parliamentary select committees to present evidence on issues affecting indie retailers and helped pave the way for the Retail Rates Discount in 2019.

Diane Sykes, founder of Diane Sykes Fashion Marketing, is this year’s fifth judge. Beginning her career at a London showroom in the 1980s, she has gained experience in many aspects of the business from buying and merchandising to wholesale sales. Today her agency supplies premium womenswear brands from across Europe.

This year small business expert Catherine Erdly will also join the panel. Having worked for high street brands, she founded The

Resilient Retail Club in 2018 to offer expert support, education and encouragement to indies, makers and brands.

Finally, Boutique magazine editor Gemma Ward completes this year’s line-up of judges. With almost 20 years’ experience as a journalist, she has judged a wide range of industry awards throughout her career and regularly interviews some of the best fashion indies and brands in the business.

First launched in 2019, the Boutique Star Awards are an annual celebration of the industry’s best indie retailers and brands. Entries will undergo a preliminary round of judging and the shortlist for each category will be announced in the coming weeks. The judging panel will meet this September to discuss the finalists and decide on the ultimate winners.

Multi-agent pop-up showroom The Fashion Huddle returns to London Following its successful debut last season, joint agency showcase The Fashion Huddle has confirmed it will return to London this summer. The pop-up showroom, based at Hammersmith’s Huddle, will present 70 brands from 11 leading UK-based agencies over a five-week stint.

Buyers can visit the space from Sunday 16 July to Friday 18 August by dropin or appointment. During its opening weekend, free transport will be provided from Pure London and Scoop or buyers can walk to the venue from Olympia in under 10 minutes.

The concept is the brainchild of The Brand Ambassadors founder Lucy Walsh, who first teamed up with 11 other agencies for AW23. This season confirmed agents include Richman Boutique Brands, Middleton Green, Joanna Edwards Agency, Matrix and Ariane Kaiser.

Buyers will be able to browse the latest collections from key international designers such as By Malina, Sirens, Hope and Ivy, Second Female, Nooki, Enamel Copenhagen, Denim Studio, Carla Ruiz, Colour Nude, Ania Schierholt, Elemente Clemente and Sarah Pacini.

“With almost 100 brands under one roof, The Fashion Huddle is fast becoming the buying destination everyone’s talking about,” says Lucy. “Buyers should think of us as another trade show and ensure they plan enough time to see everything as there are so many brands. Walk-ins are welcome but we recommend pre-booking appointments based on how busy we were last season.”

Harrogate Fashion Week organisers announce expansion plans Popular trade show Harrogate Fashion Week will expand in size this summer to meet rising demand for exhibitor space.

An additional hall will see an extra 1,600sqm of stand space added to the show, allowing buyers to source even more products and brands.

The event, which takes place at Harrogate Convention Centre, will also run for three days instead of its usual two from 30 July – 1 August.

Co-founder Wendy Adams said that while the expansion was a “big decision,” extra space was needed so it could cater for a number of new brands waiting to join its line-up.

Since its debut in July 2018, HFW has become a mainstay on the fashion trade show calendar. Today it offers

one of the latest ranges of womenswear and occasionwear brands under one roof in the North of England alongside footwear and accessories.

Carol C Collections founder Carol Capener, who has exhibited at HFW since its very first edition, comments: “Our buyers are from all over the UK and love coming to Harrogate to write their orders. It is no longer just a ‘Northern show’ as we see customers travelling from far and wide. Who wouldn’t love coming to visit the beautiful spa town of Harrogate for the weekend? We can’t wait for the next show – and the first three-day show at that!”

E-commerce fashion sales rise in May as shoppers invest in summer wardrobes Online clothing and footwear sales volumes rose by 10.8 per cent in May from April as the arrival of warmer weather tempted shoppers to spend.

Consumers bought 17.8 per cent more fashion and footwear online last month than they did during the same period last year, reveal the latest ONS figures.

Overall UK retail sales volumes increased by 0.3 per cent in May despite soaring inflation, with Brits spending 0.6 per cent more than they did in April.

David Jinks, head of consumer research for home delivery firm ParcelHero, comments: “Gloomy analysts had been expecting a fall in consumer spending in May, with inflation, the extra Bank Holiday and the supposed collapse

Hayley Menzies opens new Carnaby boutique British label Hayley Menzies has opened its second standalone London-based boutique near Carnaby Street.

Located at 8 Newburgh Street, the 640sq ft twostorey store showcases a cornucopia of colour, print and embellishment. Shoppers can browse a selection of the brand’s latest ready-to-wear offerings while downstairs houses a leopard-lined lounge showcasing its iconic knitwear.

Menzies’ celebration of beautifully made items extends from fashion into furnishings. Every available surface is accentuated with flamboyant hand-chosen antiques that nod to the brand’s vintage market stall roots. Expect enormous 1970’s Murano glass chandeliers, eBay thrift finds, 1920’s brass mirrors from the V&A and a set of Deco drinking cabinets purchased from Hayley’s favourite Notting Hill antique dealer.

For SS24, fashion is expected double down on its sustainability commitments. According to the team at Parisian trade show Premiere Vision, designers are now rethinking the entire garment production process – from initial drawings and fabrics to end of life or rebirth. “The resistance of materials is verified by numerous tests to ensure their durability,” its SS24 trends report highlights. “Compositions are adapted to ensure recyclability, aiming for single-material products, or the use of detachable components.

Indeed, SS24 materials are very much evolving in response to expectations triggered by responsible sourcing. Traceability will become even more important as brands seek certified materials that guarantee their origin as well as minimal environmental impact.

2. NATURE-VERSE

As Pure London’s overriding theme for SS24, the Nature-Verse trend denotes the collide of digitalisation with conscious fashion. Trend forecaster and fashion designer Malaïka Ewande, founder of creative consulting bureau Vesuvius, will unveil the ideas behind it during a live session on-stage at this month’s show. “Beyond a simple exploration of our world’s digitalisation, Nature-

For example, floral motifs will be re-imagined as hallucinatory digital visions. “There will be ever-more advanced digital treatments of decorations this season anchored by a rich aesthetic tradition,” says Premiere Vision. “Flowers are twisted and transformed into quasi-abstract overexposed motifs resembling scans or appearing washed out. Even nineteenthcentury style floral prints skew futuristic, creating saturated pops of colour on transparent bases like water projected onto a screen.”

Elsewhere, organic materials and an overarching minimalism defines the season’s aesthetic, with tradition techniques like knitting and macrame featuring heavily alongside fabrics created to look like plants, foliage and trees.

A

s an engagement and wedding ring specialist, we love to incorporate technology into our procedures. And despite the jewellery industry being quite traditional (some may say old-fashioned), I believe Artificial Intelligence (AI) could really transform the way we all work.

As a brand offering bespoke services, AI could make the design process significantly more efficient for my brand. It could mean popping customer’s ideas into AI, and seeing their perfect engagement ring emerge after just a few tries. Our design team could then use this design to create a CAD model and produce the real thing. In a changing retail environment where more and more consumers are shopping online, this could be a game changer for brands.

But it’s not just the jewellery industry that could benefit. This type of AI technology is applicable to so many sectors and I can only see it becoming more prevalent in the coming years. Graphic designers could save hours of precious time; consumers will be able to see different sofa styles superimposed in their living rooms without having to visit a store. The possibilities are endless, which is why the thought 86 | boutique. | JULY 2023

of AI in retail is both exciting and a little bit scary.

Another possibility is using AI to point customers in the right direction, whether this be towards the right product or the perfect team member for their needs. Just by answering a series of questions, a customer's journey could be much quicker and with less frustration.

Live chat functions could also be made significantly more streamlined using AI. Customers would get the answers they need, and the team members behind the scenes would only be required to jump in when a more complex query comes up, saving the company time and money.

When it comes to stock management and other operations, AI could be transformative. Stock could be monitored, analysed and ordered without any need for manual tracking or human intervention. Analysing reports usually takes a significant amount of time, but the use of AI for this type of task would increase efficiency and remove human error.

And from a productivity and financial standpoint, that can only be positive.

In our own business, we have already found AI to be beneficial for copywriting purposes. We’ve all seen the use of ChatGPT skyrocket,

and it is incredibly useful for writing product descriptions and other copy at the click of a button. These tasks can be incredibly time consuming, but now the process has become much more streamlined. It also helps those without a natural writing ability produce fantastic copy.

On the flip side, it can be incredibly frustrating when you want to speak to a human being and it isn’t an option. Having to jump through hoops to speak to anyone but a robot isn’t providing good customer service. However, as a person who has been on the receiving end of angry customers (justified or not), it would certainly be a relief to reduce these interactions using AI as the middleman.

In conclusion, I believe that AI could change retail for the better, as long as it is used in the right way.

The younger generations may be more inclined to a technology-based approach, for example, whereas older generations may still expect a more traditional retail experience (or, in another decade, that could come full circle). When it comes to technology, I think balance is always best.

Jan Shutt, Sunday Best Sunday Best CEO Jan Shutt is a retail veteran.

Andrew Goodacre, Bira Andrew Goodacre has devoted his career to strengthening Britain’s high streets and the communities they support. Since taking over Bira’s leadership in 2018, he has expanded the association’s membership by nearly a third by ensuring the needs of indie retailers are heard by government decision makers. Andrew has appeared before numerous parliamentary select committees to present evidence on a range of high street concerns – from the impact of the pandemic to supply chain inflation. His representations were pivotal in paving the way for the 2019 Retail Rates Discount, which greatly reduced the tax burden on smaller retailers. Starting his career in hospitality, he was also formerly a member of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) before becoming the CEO of the Residential Landlords Association in 2013.

Diane Sykes, Diane Sykes Fashion Diane Sykes has been in the fashion industry since the 1980s. At 19 years old she landed her dream job working in the London showroom of a global fashion designer. This position saw her experiencing all aspects of the industry - from retail operations and buying to merchandising and wholesale sales. Over the years, Diane’s career has taken her from London and the QE2 to New York and back again. In 2015 she launched her own multi brand agency: Diane Sykes Fashion. Specialising in premium European collections, she now proudly supplies discerning indie retailers across the UK and Ireland.

Gemma Ward, Boutique magazine A journalist with almost 20 years’ experience, Gemma Ward is the founding editor of Boutique magazine. The title launched in 2010 as a niche publication dedicated to the needs of independent fashion retailers. Today it is celebrated for its insightful business articles and inspiring content created for small business owners. Gemma has judged a wide range of fashion and beauty industry awards throughout her career and regularly interviews some of the best fashion indies and brands in the business.

Sally Gott and Rachel Hunt, Sass and Edge Friends and former colleagues Sally Gott and Rachel Hunt opened award-winning womenswear independent Sass and Edge in 2017. Armed with many years’ experience in fashion retail, styling and management, they spotted a gap on their local high street for a fun, relaxed and stylish womenswear boutique. ass and Edge in Winchester is one of those indie success stories that makes the rest of the industry sit up and take notice. Open for just six years, its original modestly sized shop has blossomed into an award-winning fashion retail business boasting strong profits and a staunch customer base. And while the pandemic was a challenging time for some indie retailers, the lockdowns and consequent boom in e-commerce proved to be pivotal in its success.

its online operation. Today, with co-founders Rachel Hunt and Sally Gott at the helm and a 17-strong team behind them, it sells a skilfully curated edit of premium womenswear to Winchester locals, tourists and fashion fans nationwide.

Big retail energy

Sass and Edge’s owners have palpable energy and enthusiasm for the business - and their dedication and determination undoubtedly holds the key to its success. “Originally, we went into this hoping for a better work-life balance,” says Rachel. “It’s probably had the opposite effect as we work more now than we ever

have” (daily from 8am – 7pm, in case you were wondering). She adds: “But the point is, it never feels like work.

The shop is like a second home and there isn’t a single day we don’t want to be here.”

Both co-founders say they have worked in retail “forever” and bring decades of experience to the business.

Sally previously held several senior positions with corporate high street brands such as Next and M&S while Rachel’s background in the independent sector has seen her working as a designer and for an indie retailer. They first met while working for The White Company in Winchester and fast became friends.

It was over festive drinks during a particularly frantic Christmas period that the initial idea for Sass and Edge began to take shape. “Opening a womenswear shop was something we’d both wanted to do separately for a number of years,” says Sally. “But after a lot of soul searching that night, we ultimately decided to just go for it - and we’ve never looked back.”

Their vision was to create a shop selling stylish, premium fashion for women who were, in a lot of ways, just like them: “Our original target customer was a local woman who loves clothes and has some expendable income,” says Sally. “She was probably used to travelling to London to get her fashion fix, so our aim was to bring her sort of labels to the local high street. She’s still very much our core customer, but our true audience is much more varied; we have everyone from teenagers to elderly women buying from us.”

A couple of months after their first brainstorm meeting, Sally and Rachel were at Pure London hunting down suppliers. They focused on

sourcing premium European brands that weren’t necessary known in Winchester. “We knew how important it was to get the right mix of brands,” says Sally. “It’s not always easy getting the exact suppliers you’d like from the very beginning, so we went for good quality labels that weren’t being sold anywhere else locally.”

Today Sass and Edge stocks womenswear, footwear, accessories, jewellery and fragrances from over 70 different designers including Bash, Rails, Self-Portrait, Paige, Ash, Anna Beck, Kirstie Le Marque and Samsøe Samsøe.

Both co-founders share the store’s buying responsibilities equally, travelling to showrooms and agents all over Europe. “To be honest, we’re never not buying,” says Rachel.

“Wherever we go we’re forever searching for the next big thing.

Often we’ll approach brands directly instead of relying on trade shows.”

Perfect premises

Another priority for the co-founders in the beginning was sourcing the right retail premises. “Finding a unit was probably our biggest challenge,”

says Sally. “Rents and rates are so high in Winchester. Plus, we wanted to be in the centre but not actually on the high street; that doesn’t come up very often.”

As fate would have it, Rachel’s husband stumbled upon the perfect empty unit just a few months later: “A former café went onto the market and while it needed a lot of work, we just knew it was the one as soon as we saw it,” she says. By June, the co-founders had the keys in their hands and had completely refurbished and opened the shop just two months later.

Once the physical shop was in place, Sally and Rachel began setting their sights on e-commerce.

They decided to sell via Trouva and Atterley “quite early on” to help drive online sales and promote the Sass and Edge brand. “We wanted to get our name out there, keep stock moving and help cashflow,” says Sally. “Trouva still works out well for us; it’s a completely different customer who buys different things, but we find it’s a great way to sell old stock and keep things ticking over.”

For the first few years, online sales made up just 12 per cent of the business. However, once the pandemic hit and the country went into lockdown, Rachel and Sally increased their social media presence in lieu of their physical store. “Things really started to change online for us in 2020,” says Sally. “We’d always used Instagram, but during the first lockdown we started broadcasting lives three times a week. It had such a huge impact on the business, and there was a direct link to sales.”

Currently, online versus in-store sales are near-evenly split with 40 per cent of Sass and Edge’s revenue coming from digital channels.

Online success

According to the duo, part of their success on Instagram – which saw them scoop Drapers’ Best Use of Social Media award in 2021 – is down to their laid-back approach: “We don’t take ourselves too seriously and customers really like that,” says Sally.

“We’ve created an online community and it feels like we’re all in a big gang.”

Sass and Edge now also employs a dedicated social media manager to oversee its Instagram and Facebook pages, which now boast a collective 16,000 followers. “We’re very dedicated,” says Rachel. “It’s not uncommon for me to answer customer enquiries from my bed at 5am.”

As the business flourished, the duo found they were outgrowing their original premises: “We’d been 94 | boutique. | JULY 2023

processing all our online orders from the shop floor but as our customer base increased, we needed to take on an external stock room,” says Sally. “We just didn’t have enough space.”

So, in the middle of the pandemic, the co-founders signed a lease for a much bigger shop while taking on another off-site unit to fulfil its online orders: “The move meant we were tripling our rent and rates, but we were confident we could do it,” she adds. “It’s in an amazing location in Winchester’s golden triangle and it’s a really lovely shop. It’s a completely different kettle of fish to our first unit but it has made the hugest impact to the business.”

As the cost-of-living crisis continues, Rachel and Sally admit they have been very lucky to remain largely unaffected in the “bubble of Winchester.” They say: “People have started talking about it more in the shop but that’s been quite a recent development. The amount shoppers are buying has stayed consistent year on year and so has our returning customer rate. We’re up +3 per cent on last year to date, which we’re delighted with as we had a really strong year in 2022.”

Driving sales

Sass and Edge’s customers are buying across the board with all product groups performing well.

Dresses remains its strongest

category followed by tops and shirts. Meanwhile, denim is a key year-round revenue maker alongside footwear.

When it comes to buying for SS24, the co-founders say they’ll be looking for newness and brands that will set the shop apart: “We’re always seeking to source different labels and products that other retailers don’t have,” says Sally. “It’s so hard though because as soon as you bring something in, everyone is following suit. We’re constantly aiming to stay one step ahead to keep it fresh. We never stop.”

While the duo has certainly uncovered a winning formula with Sass and Edge, they have no plans to expand with other physical stores. Instead, their focus will be on growing the business with e-commerce while keeping customers and staff happy. “We like working together and if we opened another shop, we’d have to split ourselves in two,” says Rachel. “For us, that wouldn’t be Sass and Edge anymore. If you work as much as we do, you need to be having fun.”

Having each other has been key to the continued success of the business. As Sally concludes: “Running a shop on your own is hard, but when there’s two of you nothing feels difficult. If one of us is struggling, the other picks it up.

We feel like we’ve sailed through the past few years on adrenalin. We absolutely love what we do.”

Here the founder reveals what’s selling online and in-store as well as where she’ll be making her product selections for SS24…

How is business at the moment?

Business is great! After a slow start to the year due to the cost of living crisis and the weather, we are pleased that sales have picked up over the last couple of months.

What are you currently selling most of both in-store and online?

In the summer season we are mainly known for the amazing range of dresses that we stock. Our customers have particularly loved a new brand called Celia B this season. Esska sandals have done incredibly well too.

We can’t get enough in!

What’s been most popular for SS23 overall?

The new pre-fall Stine Goya collection has done amazingly well for us, which we are really pleased with.

Did you introduce any new brands this season and how well have they performed?

Celia B is a new brand for us and has very been popular among shoppers. Petite Mendigote is another label we’ve introduced for the first time this season and it has also performed well.

What will you be looking for when you start buying for SS24? Do you think you’ll be making any changes to your buy based on SS23?

We always seek out new brands so we will certainly be offering new UK and international brands for SS24.

We would love to offer more occasionwear as we move forward as we will be collaborating with Alison Todd, the internationally renowned miller from Abergavenny.

Where will you be making your new season selections?

We mostly do our buying in London and Paris. As well as showrooms we’ll also be attending Scoop and Who’s Next.

What are the biggest challenges you’re currently facing as a small business?

Brexit has been devastating for small businesses such as us, as has the cost of living crisis. The soaring energy bills have been crippling for households and businesses alike.

Is there anything suppliers could be doing differently to support independent retailers?

Brands could make re-ordering more accessible, lower their minimum re-order requirements and support us with the ever-increasing delivery costs.

Do you have any events or promotions planned for the next few months to increase footfall?

We regularly host events at Kiti to showcase our brands. Recently, we hosted two events: one to celebrate our mention in The Guardian as number one boutique in the UK and the second to collaborate with a local jeweller. She was able to use our beautiful store to showcase her new collection to shoppers. Supporting other women in business is very important to us.

How optimistic are you about the final half of 2023?

Despite having a successful SS23, we are cautious going into AW23 as these are always tricker months to maintain footfall and high sales.

verybody seems to be talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the moment. I recently attended a series of seminars and there is no doubt that it has emerged as a game-changer in various industries. At first it may seem that it is only something for the big businesses, but I can assure you that it will make a difference to independent retailers. Twelve months ago, very few of us knew anything about AI. Now it is at the forefront of technology developments and is expected to evolve at an even faster pace.

Most of the focus has been on ‘generative AI’ with the likes ChatGPT. This is a piece of technology that will answer questions in detail, in a particular style, using the number of words requested by the user. It was in the headlines because some students are using it to complete homework projects. It is clever – no doubt. From a retailing point of view, it is being used to create content for marketing and social media channels, enabling retailers to better engage with existing

and potential customers by providing creative content. The more it is used, the smarter it becomes.

But it is not just in terms of generating content that AI can make a difference. AI is already being used in so many other ways. One of the key areas where AI can benefit independent retailers is inventory management. Keeping track of stock levels, predicting demand, and optimising inventory can be challenging for small businesses.

However, AI-powered inventory management systems can analyse historical data and market trends to provide accurate demand forecasts.

This enables retailers to optimise their inventory levels, reduce waste, and improve profitability.

AI can also revolutionise customer service. Chatbots and virtual assistants powered by AI can handle customer queries and provide personalised recommendations. These intelligent systems can understand natural language and engage in meaningful conversations, offering customers

a seamless and efficient shopping experience – like they are ‘talking’ to a real person. Retailers can leverage AI to provide 24/7 support, address customer concerns promptly and enhance customer satisfaction.

An increasingly important business skill is the management of data, and AI can make a tangible difference in this respect. AI has the power to collect, analyse and draw conclusions from much more data more quickly than ever before.

Understanding customer and business data will allow the business owner to make better informed decisions based on consumer behaviour, preferences, and buying patterns. These insights can also be used to tailor marketing campaigns, develop pricing strategies, and offer personalised recommendations to customers.

In conclusion, AI has the potential to revolutionise the world of retail - and not just for the large chains. From inventory management and customer service to data analysis and automation, AI technologies can empower independent retailers to compete with larger players and deliver exceptional customer experiences.

It is not a subject that can be ignored, and indie retailers cannot afford to say that artificial intelligence is not applicable for them. It’s already being used on a widescale without us knowing.
