Say hello to Wex Photo Video HAVING REPORTED EARLIER this year that Wex Photographic was bought by investor Aurelius, which had already acquired Calumet the previous year, news reaches us that Wex Photographic and Calumet have become simply Wex Photo Video, an announcement that was made mid October.

A new flagship store is due to open in Whitechapel, London (at

37-39 Commercial Road, E1 1LF), this month (November) and covers 7,000 square feet, making it the largest of its kind in the UK, with Calumet’s smaller London store on Wardour Street reportedly closing before Christmas, and the team from Calumet’s soon-to-close Drummond Street shop said to be shortly moving to the new location.

already been re-branded with the new name, whilst other Calumet outlets will reportedly be gradually re-branded over the next year.

SONY PUTS US FULLY IN THE FRAME THE ELECTRONICS BEHEMOTH has announced the third generation of its popular full frame mirror-less camera in the A7R Mark III, plus a new full frame lens to go with it – and a further one to follow in summer 2018.

The latest compact bodied camera features a whopping 42.2 megapixel resolution from a backilluminated 35mm full frame CMOS image sensor, 10fps continuous shooting and, ensuring both swiftness and accuracy, 399 phase detection AF points covering 68% of the image area, plus 425 contrast AF points. Other key features include 5-axis optical in-body image stabilisation, providing, it claims, a 5.5 step shutter speed advantage, plus 4K video capture, dual SD

card slots, extended battery life, and a core ISO range of 100-32000 expandable to ISO50-102400. Sony says that it has been ‘completely redesigned for professionals’ and that sales are due to start this November at an SRP of £3,200.

The first of the new E-mount lenses meanwhile is the compact designed FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Standard Zoom, which it describes as versatile and featuring a swift, precise and quiet autofocus performance.

Again available this month, SRP is around £1,200.

We’ll have to wait a bit longer for the other new lens, currently under development.

Promised for summer 2018, the FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS Super Telephoto lens will, it is claimed, deliver the high resolution and ‘beautiful bokeh’ effects of its flagship G Master series lenses. The optic is being aimed at pro sports, wildlife and news photographers, with additional specifications

Sigma’s new mirror-less marvel THE THIRD PARTY LENS manufacturer has a new optic with which to entice the trade and its mirror-less camera-owning customers, in the large diameter wide-angle Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN. This prime lens falls under the manufacturer’s ‘Contemporary’ series banner, though it says that image quality rivals that of its ‘Art’ series lenses. Compact and lightweight, it’s been developed for everyday use.

Available in Micro Four Thirds and Sony E-mount fits, Sigma says this is the world’s first interchangeable lens for Sony E-mount APS-C cameras to offer a 24mm focal length (35mm equivalent) and f/1.4 brightness.

CANON ‘G’ FORCE TO POWER YOUR AUTUMN SALES

Not content with a new EOS 6D Mark II, EOS M100, four new ‘L’ series lenses, a macro twin flash unit, a raft of PIXMA printers and copious cashback and lens reward deals to drive footfall to its retail partners in the past couple of months, Canon has done it again with the latest release: the PowerShot G1 X Mark III. BPI News attends the launch, in a London magic club, to discover how it will cast a spell on dealers and customers alike…

T

his is a big deal…” So says Canon Product Expert David Parry, talking about its latest, conventional tech wisdom-defying, release – which squeezes an APS-C sized sensor into a compact camera body with a 3x optical zoom lens.

The manufacturer has certainly been providing us with plenty to write about – and for its retail partners to discover – these past couple of months. In our September edition we ran a spread on its new autumn products (see this article’s standfirst for reminder), and followed up in October with a detailed outline on its current cashback and lens reward schemes, all designed to further incentivise sales.

On top of all this – as David Parry says – this November sees the appearance of a new heavyweight among premium cameras aimed at enthusiasts and professionals

looking for a second, more compact fixed lens back up to their DSLR kit.

Enter the PowerShot G1 X Mark III, an update of the 2012 PowerShot G1 X, which originally had a 1.5-inch sensor.

Triple whammy…

As with predecessors, the camera’s intended market is DSLRusers who want a more compact solution, yet with a similar look and feel. “All the feedback we had from the G series was that people want the same kind of control and experience they get from their SLRs

and I feel we’ve really answered that with this camera. We know that most people who use this series are DSLR users, so we wanted them to be able to pick this up and start using it straight away.

The shutter release for example is more like a DSLR than any compact we’ve ever had.”

As indicated at the outset of this piece, the new 24.2 megapixel camera includes the breakthrough of a larger APS-C sized sensor in a smaller chassis – its sensor technology claimed to be almost exactly the same as the EOS 80D – married to a zoom the equivalent of 24-72mm in 35mm film camera terms, that’s optimized for the sensor. “This is the first compact from us to have an APS-C sized sensor,” says David. What’s more the latest camera sports an aperture range of f/2.8 to f/5.6, plus a built-in mechanical ND filter and 9-blade

Also arriving in this model is a DIGIC 7 processor – “to have this in a camera of this size is incredible” – centrally positioned 2.36 million dot electronic viewfinder and improved IS performance, says Canon. The built in image stabilisation system is said to be the equivalent of 4 stops.

We also get Full HD movies this time around rather than 4K, Canon stating that it wanted to perfect its auto focus systems before it would include 4K. “If your images are not sharp, you’re wasting your time,” Canon’s David reasoned. Time lapse movies are, however, included.

With November availability promised, suggested retail price for the G1 X Mark III is £1149.

Frames worth looking into…

This time of year naturally has huge gifting potential, and Kenro’s album and frames catalogue is the place to browse for stock. t’s been a while since we last featured Just Ltd in BPI News – yet each time the distributor manages to surprise us with an inventive new line of photographic accessories. The ones to focus on this time are a bunch of new LCD glass protectors and sunshades from Larmor branded as part of its ‘5th’ generation series, that could make for steady sellers for the canny photo retailer.

Presented in attractively slick and elegant combo packaging that also includes the hood which we’ll examine in a moment, the LCD protectors’ five layer construction comprises a nano anti fingerprint layer, 0.3mm optical glass, a metal border, an anti shatter layer and an adhesive layer.

The metal border ensures no damage to the edges of the camera’s screen, whilst the selfadhesive layer makes for an easy application. The optical glass is also anti scratch and anti shatter. In

combination it’s also thin; its maker suggests that the usability of any touch screen model it is applied to isn’t compromised, while Larmor’s product is anti glare, smudge resistant and doesn’t leave any residue when it’s removed.

herever you’re based in the UK, if you’re looking to replace an existing print lab or add a new revenue stream to your business – like the case studies here – Noritsu has got to be top of your list.

For dry labs we’re talking the Noritsu Green range, starting with the Noritsu Green Simplex, moving on to the QSS Green standard and peaking with the top-of-the-range QSS Green II dry lab. If however, you’re looking to ride the wave of the silver halide resurgence, like many, then the heavy-duty 3704G is the one to go for. The latter has enjoyed sales figures seven times higher this year than the previous one, according to PhotoXport’s very busy MD Derek Fieldhouse.

To give an indication of PhotoXport’s countrywide reach, Robert Carne of Premier Photographics in Truro in Cornwall recently swapped out two Noritsu wet labs for a Green dry lab, whilst Malcolm McDonald of Sutherland’s Photo Lab, based in Thurso, Scotland is another satisfied Green II convert.

“We wanted to have something

as close to our old Noritsu QSS3212 wet lab as we could, which turned out to be an ex-demo Green II,” says Malcolm. “I watched the videos about it and saw that it was getting great reviews – which prompted me to go for it. And the print quality is fantastic!”

From initial discovery to having a machine installed took just three weeks, relates Malcolm.

Speed of output – and the ability to produce photo books – was another consideration in choosing this machine, as Sutherland’s Photo Lab needed a heavy-duty beast to fulfill its high volume of print orders, extending across most of the Highlands.

Fellow retailer and minilab Phoenix Photographic, is another recipient of a Noritsu Green II dry lab. The business’ Dave Rasch was already satisfied with his Green II – so much so that he added a second Noritsu dry lab. “It was a very easy choice to be honest with you, and we’re so pleased,” he confirms. “We can do various sizes nice and quick and we can also do double sided for photobooks, cards and invitations.

For their part, PhotoXport are a very fair and flexible company to deal with – they listen to what the customer wants, which is rare these days.”

And just last month we heard that a QSS Green II dry lab had been installed in The Camera Centre, based in the Shetland Isles.

Manager Ben Mullay told us: “The Green II just suits the nature of our business and the volume of stuff we’re doing, as well as offering the ability to do cards and photobooks and added value items. It’s more of a ‘photo machine’; it’s a special bit of kit and that is confirmed by the picture quality, which is much more photo-realistic than our previous lab. It even renders pictures from mobile phones really well and does as good a job as it can with them.

The output has been very well received by customers.”

Dry labs aside, a Noritsu 3704G with Quad magazine System has been recently placed with Jane Stapleton School Photography in Derbyshire. The business’ MD Steven Deverill told BPI News: “We’ve been running Noritsu labs

for 12 years and they’ve always been very stable. Although it was an obvious choice for us considering our volumes, we took an overview of all the systems available. The 3704G ticked all the boxes and after a smooth installation we are looking forward to many more years with trouble free Noritsu equipment.”

A BIGGER SPLASH! After a successful, newly expanded event at Liverpool’s Exhibition Centre, cheek-by-jowl with the famous Albert Dock in 2016, this October 7th and 8th the Wilkinson Cameras team returned for a second year. BPI News braved disrupted trains and rain-lashed ferry crossing to report on the biggest photography and optics show in the north…

L

ast year we reported on how Wilkinson Cameras’ Digital Splash has outgrown its modest trade fair roots to become a two-day event in a swish and airy modern venue – the Exhibition Centre in Liverpool – thereby making it the biggest photo show in the North West of England.

Once again last month we were in attendance, speaking to the distributors, retailers and manufacturers who had responded positively and enthusiastically to the offer to exhibit – and also caught up with Wilkinson’s MD, David Parkinson, to get his impressions of, and feedback from, 2017’s event – the eighth such annual show. The big camera brands – Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic, Ricoh, Sigma and Hasselblad – were all in attendance, many with bigger and brighter stands this time. A total of 42 manufacturers exhibited, representing over 70 photo brands.

As on previous occasions, exhibitors we spoke with were visibly happy with the level of interest from attendees and the quality of visitors, noting that people had obviously come to spend. Digital Splash’s own analysis reveals some had travelled from as far as Scotland and the south coast to attend.

“As far as the trade is concerned the feedback has generally been very good indeed,” reveals Wilkinson’s MD David Parkinson. “Everybody has been very complimentary about how well organised it was. The quality of the visitors was very good.

Visitor numbers and takings on the Saturday were on par with last year, and, though train disruptions on the Sunday meant we were slightly down on numbers, our actual turnover wasn’t that much affected – meaning people had come to the show to actively spend.”

In fact, Wilkinson Cameras says its turnover was up 16% overall compared with last year. Data also reveals that almost half the visitors were in the 45-54 and 55-64 age groups as one might expect, though a significant proportion (21%) were under the age of 18. Some 64% declared themselves enthusiast photographers, 12% pros and 22% beginners.

“Feedback from attendees is that they thoroughly enjoyed the event, and the photo walks and talks all helped to drive sales. We had new young blood like Thomas Heaton and Alyn Wallace, who went down extremely well. Matt Hart did a very good job with the Fujifilm walks and we had excellent feedback from

the Hasselblad photo walks. People seem to have enjoyed it immensely and the trade has been telling us likewise.”

Smooth running To avoid a snaking queue for the main retail counter, this year it was refined into lanes, whilst sales were now spread more evenly throughout the show due to many suppliers selling Wilkinson’s stock direct from their stand.

“That helped immensely. It worked for the guys selling direct because then they could just seal the deal there and then, and from our point of view, when you consider there’s lots of accessories sold at the show it reduces the till queues down considerably”, says David.

“We also had twice as many tills as last year and more staff, so the operational side of things had much improved and made for smoother running. The process of spending money has to be as quick and as painless as possible.

“The whole ticketing system had also been overhauled to make it a lot

easier and we used mobile phones as scanners to scan people into the talks and walks. We’ve learnt a lot since year one and can take a pat on the back for ensuring the whole event ran much smoother. As far as the trade goes we’d just like to thank everybody for supporting Digital Splash; particularly this year, as you could tell exhibitors had put a lot more effort into the stands, which looked smarter and more user friendly. Sony had gone to town with their activities, including break dancing and the biking, while Fujifilm did phenomenally well in expanding their mini seminar sessions. Feedback from customers has been very positive indeed.

Exhibitors are still getting sales now off the back of the show and I’m sure we’ll still feel the benefit come Christmas.”

FUJIFILM’S NEW ‘HOME FOR PHOTO’ UNVEILED

There’s a new website for Fujifilm photo printing designed to drive people to print more and do so with its Fujifilm independent photo retail network members. Marketing Manager Peter Wigington talks us through the benefits and outlines a couple of supportive seasonal promotions…

n recent months we’ve heard from a wide variety of photo retailers sharing the benefits of being part of Fujifilm’s independent photo retail network with us. This month we’re hearing direct from the manufacturer. Fujifilm’s Marketing Manager Peter Wigington has been in touch to enthuse about a new consumer website for its photo printing services at www.fujifilmphotoservices.co.uk.

The idea behind the new website bearing the message ‘For the memories that matter’, is that it talks consumers through the steps they need to make to get their photos printed in a simple and straightforward fashion using all the platforms available through the Fujifilm Imagine software to create and print beautiful photos and gifts: in store using a Fujifilm kiosk, through your PC using the online kiosk or through your Smartphone or tablet using the Imagine Mobile app. Naturally the website also has an interactive store locator to direct

customers to their nearest Fujifilm independent photo retail network member.

“This is an important move for us,” confirms Peter. “Although it’s aimed at supporting our independent photo retail network group via the store locator, our wider ambition is to talk increasingly directly to consumers about photo print services – and then, once we’ve inspired them, direct them to where they can get those services undertaken. Our ambition was to create a Fujifilm ‘home of photo’.

We’re telling consumers what options are available, regarding what they can do when printing their images, plus giving them the opportunity to download the Fujifilm Imagine app so they can enjoy the convenience of using their local store’s online ordering option.”

“We’ve seen similar promotions online so thought we’d bring it in-store too,” Peter explains. “It’s just a small box but will hold up to 700 6x4-inches. We are suggesting that the retailer offers the box with 200 prints for £39.99. The prints initially come in the form of 8 vouchers each worth 25 6x4 prints. That way the box can be given as a gift and the prints redeemed when they are needed rather than all at once, which in turn encourages repeat visits and more custom to the store.”

ai Nippon Printing – or DNP for short – is diversifying in order to open up possible new markets for its partners in the photo trade. It has a new photo-card printer on the way, with availability promised before the end of the year.

Concentrate on how the image is going to look, instead of worrying about if the flash is going to fire or if it’s too harsh! To me, it’s very liberating to be able to take all of those concerns away.

“If I need higher power output I’ll use it on flash, but I do prefer to use it in continuous mode. Although it’s a bright light, once it’s on, people tend to adjust very quickly to it. You get much more of a natural picture and no red eye either because the eyes adjust to the light. It will provide beautiful, ‘wrap-around’ soft light straight out of the lamp.”

A sequel that improves on the original…

“Compared to the original Neo, the Neo 2 is not only brighter but now has the flash capability, meaning I’m confident to go to any situation with that Neo 2 and know it will deliver what I need it to deliver,” continues

Terry Donnelly. “For portability when you’re on the go, the Neo 2 just can’t be beaten, it really can’t. If you need even more light or a different kind of light, then the AEOS and the Anova Pro really provide some kick as well, if I’m working with a crew. We used it for lighting a World War II Spitfire in a hanger on a recent workshop. I needed a big spread of light, so we used three Anova Pros and an AEOS. It’s horses for courses really, but, if I can, the Neo 2 is the light I’ll go to first of all.”

As a case in point, Terry recently took his Rotolight kit along to a shoot at Liverpool’s iconic Cairns brewery, an old Victorian building that’s currently undergoing development.

“I wanted to go in and shoot the model using the background as much as possible to document it before it disappears; it was a personal shoot for me as much as anything,” he explains. “Rotolight did, however, come up to Liverpool to shoot some behind the scenes video footage.

“We used a number of light combinations. There’s a picture of the girl in the wedding dress with her face made up that was lit with one Neo 2, just because we had to access the location via a ladder, so it was a bit awkward taking more kit up there.

We also needed to move quickly and to be in and out of there as fast as possible. When we had more room, on the lower level, we did a set with three Neo 2’s. We had a separation light behind our model, to give us a bit of a rim light, we had a Neo 2 camera right plus a Neo 2 camera left, which was at half power. It lifted the shadow density and still gave us shape and form to the model’s face.”

The future for photo printing?

INTERESTING CHANGES AND developments are being reported in the photo printing landscape by industry watchers Futuresource Consulting. It claims that while standalone wet and dry minilabs accounted for 47% of the 1.16 billion on-site photo prints in Western Europe in the first half of the year, both instant print kiosks and ‘tabletop’ professional inkjet photo printers are continuing to penetrate the market, with over 1,600 instant print kiosks being installed in the same location from January to June 2017. This increased the number of active kiosks by 2% to over 84,000 units, producing 614 million photo prints over the same six-month period.

Futuresource says these same kiosks are being optimised to also offer photo gifts, either fulfilled on site or off-site, thereby maximising potential revenue for the photo

retailer. As the industry watcher has stated a couple of times in recent months, it believes one of the reasons for the growth in instant printing across Europe is increased demand from under-35 ‘Millennials’ wanting square and instant prints, albeit in low volumes.

In addition, some 1,500 ‘tabletop’ professional inkjet photo printers were also sold in Western Europe, many of them into the retail photoprinting channel, says Futuresource.

While some replaced existing printers, others were taken on to offer additional printing capacity.

These printers offer a cost-effective solution to support an existing full-scale wet or dry minilab, can be installed as part of a modular dry minilab or instant print kiosk solution or as a standalone unit, it notes. Consequently, these printers are appealing to some retailers/ retail chains that have not previously offered photo-printing services.

Hasselblad X1D-50c ‘best available medium format sensor’ THE PREMIUM CAMERA BRAND has come out on top in a recent test of the sensor in its X1D-50c medium format camera, as rated by DxOMark, which claims to be the reference for image quality. In fact, it achieved the highest DxOMark score of 102 points for any commercially

available sensor tested.

It also said that ‘while the massive resolution, 16-bit color definition, and relatively slow frame rate means the X1D-50c will primarily appeal to studio, portrait, landscape, or high-end advertising and editorial photographers shooting low ISOs,

with a maximum ISO 25,600 setting the X1D-50c should be a viable proposition for low light photographers.’

CHRISTMAS IS COMING… … So, in retail terms, there’s no time to waste. Following the Black Friday feast this month – if you’re participating (see also our advisory feature last month) – comes the most heightened and hopefully prolonged sales period of the year. So, once again, how can you prime your photo business to make the most of it? Business expert Adam Bernstein has Christmas wrapped up…

efore we know it, all eyes and thoughts will turn to Christmas, with the season’s festivities – by which we really mean its commerce opportunities – necessitating a change to routine.

So once again, it’s a case of planning now for what’s comes later…

Use manufacturer’s promotions to promote yourself Following the spending frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, you’ll still want to ensure that Christmas is the period when wallets open for longer (and, hopefully, wider). This means that switched-on retailers have to work doubly hard (or should do), to both anticipate and serve the Christmas rush, and at the same time scheme away to

generate income in the New Year.

Again it’s somewhat a case of predicting what everybody else is doing and trying to be better, while bearing in mind that these days it’s often not until the two weeks before Christmas that business really hots up. This is when you might start to see things shift that aren’t even covered by seasonal cashbacks or similar sweeteners.

Nevertheless, these days, particularly with the transparency of the Internet, people do take notice of, and moreover expect, to be able to grab something extra. To warm up customers, you could offer a daily deal promotion on your website – if you’re canny, you’ll see if it can tie in with any cash-back promotions that manufacturers are offering in the run up to Christmas and early into the New Year. By definition this

means ensuring that all staff are aware of any and all promotions that make purchases less expensive for customers at what is an expensive time of year (keeping an eye on BPI News’ news pages isn’t a bad bet – Ed).

Going beyond the traditional January sales (which now seem to start on Christmas Eve), is it worth running a New Year promotion for a limited period – say a free filter with every lens, or a loyalty card that offers a 10% discount, once five stamps (one per purchase) have been collected to reward returning customers? Clearly, this would need to be price sensitive – you don’t want five purchases of, say, inexpensive accessories, leading to 10% off a DSLR body.

As with any time of year, seek to collect information on

your customers, especially email addresses. Send, with consent, targeted offers to your customers.

But to do this properly (like Amazon does) means looking back at what the customer has previously bought.

If you don’t currently capture this information, change your methods so that you do. The process helps cross-sell and up-sell with the incentive – for the customer – of an extra discount. As ever though it’s a question of balance and the trick is to not overload customers with mailings.

Be festive, but don’t make it taxing Christmas is a time for giving and you may feel inspired to spread some Christmas cheer with small token gifts to staff. What many may

December. With such a deluge in mail that needs to meet a finite date, Royal Mail tries to help by listing the last recommended posting dates for items to reach far-flung parts of the UK (and the world). Details can be found at www.royalmail.com/greetings.

To arrive in time for Christmas, inland 2nd class has to be sent by 20 December while Special Delivery needs to be posted by 22 December. Of course, you may use other firms to get your products to customers; check and diarise their delivery cut-offs. Disappointment leads to lost custom and a haranguing on social media. So whatever you do, manage the expectations of customers. There are a number of cases where angry customers have vented their fury over Christmas deliveries arriving late – Citylink in 2012 and Yodel in 2013 being prime examples.

Customers will blame you as much as the courier if their order arrives late (or not at all).

while predictably Boxing Day is a Tuesday and New Year’s Day is the following Monday (Tuesday in Scotland). This means deposits will take much longer to clear than normal. HSBC, for example, doesn’t send automated electronic payments on non-working days. With cheques, funds are generally available on the third working day after deposit, but it’s not until the sixth day after deposit that funds become nonreturnable. That said, from the end of October, some banks will allow images of cheques to be banked electronically. An alternative that has gained significant traction is the use of the (free) Faster Payment Service offered by most, but not all, banks, which means that a Faster Payment should go through within two hours (but generally instantly) without charge.

However, on occasions, a Faster Payment can take until the following day to show up in an account. So a wise business moves monies a day or so earlier than needed, especially when salaries need paying between Christmas and New Year.

Remember to exercise caution with Faster Payments. A destination bank account that is mistakenly keyed can mean money goes to the wrong destination, instantly, and because of confidentiality can be difficult to retrieve.

These days most retail doesn’t shut up shop over Christmas, but you may have occasional lulls. If you’ve time between Christmas and New Year – and are not simply looking forward to a well-earned breather – use it to become more energy efficient. There are simple, cost saving steps that can bring you benefits, not just over the Christmas period but also into the New Year.

Some cost cutting measures are simple and can be done on the fly. These include: fitting energy efficient lights; turning off equipment – computers, copiers – setting security lights to be off by default (with any motion re-activating them); dialling the thermostat down or ideally switching it off (the Carbon Trust reckon that even lowering settings by a single degree can reduce bills by 8%); not heating unused areas or preventing furniture from obstructing radiators; as well as lagging pipes and checking for draughts. NEW EU DATA PROTECTION LAW Christmas aside, a spot of house keeping for businesses: Data protection law has recently been updated by Europe and will be in place from 25 May 2018.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will directly affect all member states, and the UK is to implement the legislation, which will replace the Data Protection Act 1998.

Changes will be required, and, if not made, firms risk considerable fines and reputational damage. Indeed, under the GDPR, organisations breaching the law could face a fine of up to 4% of annual worldwide turnover, or €20m (whichever is the greater).

Under the GDPR, there is additional information needing providing. Firms will have to tell data subjects – in our case, customers and staff – the legal basis for processing their data, the data retention period, and of their right to complain to the Information Commissioner.

There is also a requirement that privacy notices are concise, easy to understand and in clear language.

The GDPR offers new rights for having inaccuracies corrected, to have information erased while stopping direct marketing, as well as a right to data portability.

The GDPR also says that consent to use personal data cannot be inferred from silence, pre-ticked boxes or inactivity.

There is presently no general obligation to report any data breaches, but the GDPR radically changes this and creates an obligation to report data protection breaches that could cause an individual harm within 72 hours. WITH THE LIKES OF FUTURESOURCE recently telling us that the Instagram and selfie generation are buoying up the photo printing market, it’s perhaps not so surprising that respected image library Getty Images has just awarded $10,000 each to three Instagram photographers. The recipients of its 2017 Getty Images Instagram Grant, who are from the USA and India, will also get mentorship from a Getty Images photojournalist and the opportunity to have their work showcased in the Getty Images Gallery in London.

Getty says that the partnership and grant recognises Instagram has introduced new opportunities for emerging image makers, outside the mainstream media, to create and share projects of social importance – and supports Getty Images’ wider commitment to nurturing emerging talent.

The winners were selected from among a group of nominated visual artists. Nominations were made by a committee of industry experts who looked at the existing body of work represented on the nominee’s Instagram account, focusing on
