THE PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW CLAIMS RECORD AUDIENCE A COUPLE of months since Hall 5 at the NEC darkened once more, Future has released the official BPA audited attendance figure for March’s four-day show – which falls pretty close to our own educated guess at the time: 30,804 ‘pure visitors’ (excluding exhibitor numbers). Its organizer claims this is a 4% increase on 2015.

“We ended the 2016 show on a high and it’s fantastic to have our expectations confirmed through the official audit,” enthuses Event

Manager for The Photography Show, Cassandra Grant. “The increase in visitors, and their enjoyment of the event, is also reflected in the hugely positive feedback from our exhibitors; including some of the biggest brands in photography. We’re already looking forward to the 2017 event!”

As a case in point, Sony UK’s Head of Imaging Frederik Lange said at the time of our April issue report, echo-ing the views of many

fellow exhibitors: “This show is getting better year on year and is important to the UK market. Visitors are becoming more diverse and we have seen more interested young customers, which for us, is key.”

EPSON SURELAB D3000; MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO SCHOOL LABS AND PRINT LABS WORLDWIDE Since its launch the Epson SureLab SL-D3000 has quickly established itself at the forefront of high quality photographic inkjet printing, particularly in the schools and professional lab market.

Three photographers from Parthenay near Poitiers in France, Isabelle and Phillipe Gaudin together with André Viollier set up Synergie Photo in 2010.

Synergie chose the Dual Roll machine to enable two different sizes of paper to be loaded at a single time together with a sorting tray.

Riot Photobooks initially started their business printing through Large Format Printers and as the business grew they faced two major challenges to.

The original photo studio is located in the town centre and focuses primarily on taking professional photographs of families and children.

The first was printing in smaller sizes because of the difficultly of cutting and changing rolls. The second was the large amount of waste.

arking the Anova Pro’s UK debut, we were invited along to a lighting workshop hosted by Rotolight brand ambassador and ‘master of light’ Jason Lanier at the company’s Pinewood Studios base – at which both the Neo and the Anova Pro were demo’d before a live audience.

Settling into a comfy seat in the John Barry theatre – located right on Goldfinger Avenue, as if that wasn’t exciting enough – this was the first chance many of us in the UK got to see the new light (announced in BPI News May) in action.

What’s special is that this is

the world’s first continuous LED light that can not only provide a continuous light output for those wishing to shoot stills or videos, but at the same time provide a flash sync at 150% of the maximum brightness plus remote triggering, providing a replacement for traditional strobe photographers’ mono blocks. It can act as an accurate modelling light and affords control over flash power and duration, plus colour temperature. In short, rather than having to buy a separate light for continuous light and a separate light for flash photography, this is one product that can do both.

“What this light does is that it gives photographers in the right circumstances the ability to take one light and be able to accomplish pretty much anything.”

I never thought they’d make an LED flash but they have.” The photographer had been able to play with two Anova Pro prototypes for around a month and detailed how he had really put it through its paces – treating them like final working samples. “I’ve wanted to see what these lights could do creatively. I’m able to use them with reflectors, offcamera flash and even the Neos. You can put any high-speed sync trigger into the back of them. I talked to Rotolight and asked if I could shoot up to 11fps with the Anova Pro. The answer was yes. It’s remarkable.”

BPI News: What would be your three key selling points if pitching the Anova Pro to a prospective customer?

“For me, the Anova Pro’s key selling points are that it flashes high speed sync, that it’s brighter than the previous versions of the Anova, plus you can change the colour temperature on it, which is huge.

And now that Rotolight are coming out with light modifiers like the Chimera softboxes, diffusers and barn doors, and understanding that they’ve got to provide those, it’s even more of a big deal.”

As we touched on in our May issue, there are three iterations of the Anova Pro available to buy.

Retailing at 25% less than the previous model (whilst being a whopping 43% brighter), the Anova Pro is available in either Bi-Colour (6300K-3150K) ‘Standard’ 50 beam angle (for greater straight line output), 110 ‘Ultrawide’ (for soft-fill, flood or Chromakey), or fixed colour 5600K. In terms of how to pitch the Anova Pro – or even the Neo – to your customers, photographer Jason Lanier has some advice:

“LED lighting lets us see what we’re going to get before we take the shot; you can see the shadows, you can see the bounce. The easiest way to learn lighting is with LED’s.

“Right. You don’t have to go out and find it. I love that you can buy the Chimera stuff from Rotolight.

But the thing that’s a game changer is the flash. If I’m outside and I’m shooting any sort of portrait, then I’m going to use the flash because it’s brighter. I really enjoy the flash for that reason. Plus, when you fire continuous shots with LED you’ll get blur, whereas when you fire with flash it freezes the frame.

That’s one of the biggest changes the Anova Pro offers. Before we could shoot someone throwing stuff around or dancing but there would be motion blur. Now, with a flash, you can freeze frame it a bit better.”

Presumably there will be occasions when you do actually want a bit of motion blur, though, for creative reasons?

“Absolutely. But what’s neat about this light is that it’s an all-in-one.

When I start talking to people and

comparing it to other mono lights I say it’s also a beautiful massive LED. When it comes to mono lights and their lamps, they’re really giving off very little light in comparison.”

So in terms of what it brings to the pro’s creative arsenal, is it really the flexibility that’s key for you?

“What this light does is that it gives photographers in the right circumstances the ability to take one light and be able to accomplish pretty much anything. That, to me, is the biggest difference the Anova Pro provides. What we’ve done traditionally is bring LEDs and then bring flashes – and that’s a lot of gear. Plus, the other thing that’s huge about it is the battery life. The battery in flash mode will last for days, whereas when you’re firing mono lights using flash they’ll run out pretty quick in an hour or two.

These will go for days.

“It’s a collaborative effort – when Rod spoke to me about this, he asked for feedback. So we talked about how they could design the light and what photographers would look for and he and I would Skype and I would say ‘this is what photographers think.’

He’d speak to me in engineering terms and I’d just reply back in photography terms. All I want to know is how fast does it shoot, how bright is it, how long is it going to last, how long does it take the batteries to recharge?

That’s all I want to know. And so I try and take a commonsense approach to photography so I can relate that information to all the photographers who want to listen.

Convert customers to Fujifilm Also new from Fujifilm and arriving at the end of June is its Fujinon Teleconverter XF2X TC WR, which is £349 SRP. As one might expect it is designed to extend the range of particular mirrorless X mount lenses (see following paragraph) by twice. The optical design involves a construction of 9 elements in 5 groups to maintain the optical performance of the original lens, says Fuji.

Furthermore the teleconverter is both weather and dust resistant, and can operate in temperatures down to -10°C, which means it is an

ideal match for use with the X-T1 and X-Pro2 camera bodies and XF50140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR and XF100400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR lenses.

The high-grade metal exterior of the teleconverter has been designed with the X system in mind, so when attached to a compatible Fujinon lens the two products appear as one single lens. A firmware upgrade is also being touted by the manufacturer, available at the beginning of June, to ensure that full compatibility is offered with the lenses above.

e seem to be taking on more new brands than ever before at the moment,” responds an enthusiastic David Parkinson, MD of Wilkinson Cameras, when asked about the retailer’s annual Digital Splash show, set to re-appear ‘bigger and better’ this coming October. “Names like Elinchrom, Bowens, Hasselblad will be appearing for the first time, joining the likes of Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Olympus and Fujifilm who regularly attend. As a punter you will see all the big names you’d expect to be there!”

As you’ll note from the advert opposite, the dates for your diary are Saturday October 15th and Sunday 16th – the first time that Digital Splash has been spread across two days, which in itself sends out a very positive message. “With it being held in a cultural city such as Liverpool, with lots going on, we believe people will come for the whole weekend,” says David. “Some photographers will undoubtedly come both days.

We’ve got eight speakers doing 16 presentations, with different people talking on different days. So that may encourage people to stay over, as will the lots of other events we’ve organised to get people there and keep them there!”

“Additionally, pro video is obviously becoming a bigger part of the market, and so too will it play a bigger part in our show, with all the accessories that go along with it. Appealing more to the consumer will be new categories, such as action cameras, drones and sports optics, which we’ve never had at the show before. We’re really aiming at a much broader audience than ever before, which is why feel we’re going to bring in the extra visitors – with our projection being 10,000 across the two days. We’ve set ourselves an ambitious target but Digital Splash is going to be much more heavily promoted and hosted in a prestigious venue. We’re going from a dealer show to much more premier league…”

e like to try and be ahead of the game at BPI News – and so it was in our April issue we brought you news of Nissin’s ultra portable i60A flashgun (above) for mirror-less cameras, which last month picked up a TIPA Award for Best Portable Flash. As its exclusive distributor for the UK, Kenro is due to have stock available of the Sony fit in June – with Fujifilm and Four Thirds (Olympus & Panasonic) arriving in August, plus the Canon and Nikon following on in November.

LONG-TERM TRADE MEMBER CONVERTS TO FUJIFILM FDIS

Fujifilm’s Marketing Manager Peter Wigington has long preached the value of retailers and minilabs joining the Fujifilm Digital Imaging Service network.

This month we hear from a recent convert to the ‘cause’ – Peter Rogers Photographic in Stafford, a retailer with a long and distinguished history….

P

eter Rogers Photographic has been in business since 1946 – so obviously knows very well what it takes to remain in business through myriad market changes, technological shifts and an evolving customer base.

Now run by Anthony Rogers, a wedding photographer by trade and member of the British Institute of Professional Photographers, who took over the Stafford-based store in the mid 1980s, its latest evolution has involved it joining Fujifilm’s countrywide network of

Fujifilm Digital Imaging Service (FDIS) members. As a result it has recently re-branded the store with fresh Fujifilm signage to show off its new and increased range of photofinishing and photo gifting services. The retailer prides itself on its knowledgeable staff offering friendly impartial advice.

With a customer profile described as ‘broad’, “We’ve been at our present premises since 1959,” Anthony reveals – incredible in itself. “We used to outsource our photo processing, when it was all film, to Kodak and Colorama. Then, when digital came along, we thought we should get our own lab, because we had uhm’d and ahh’d for years about getting a chemical lab, but parting with £100,000 seemed a lot of money.

“We went to Focus on Imaging and looked at the dry labs there, but we didn’t want something with a lot of bells and whistles, just a ‘box’ that would print. We originally got a Fujifilm lab eight years ago mainly for printing our own wedding and portrait work. We then put a kiosk in and battled along. We were probably one of the first retailers to put a dry lab in their store in our area.

We had a Jessops in the town that closed, and its manager opened

a photo store – Stafford Photo Centre – and was a FDIS member. He subsequently decided to move his business online, so that inspired us to seize the opportunity to get the ‘full blown’ FDIS experience.

“We’d known Fujifilm for a long time, Peter Wigington’s a great guy.

Anthony’s set up currently comprises two self-service Fujifilm Imagine kiosks front-of-house, a Frontier-S DX100 in the shop to do instant prints, plus an original DL400 drylab upstairs. “We’ve also got the Imagine smartphone app so customers can go online and order,

New face in the frame which we didn’t have before. In terms of competition, there isn’t really anybody else in the town now.”

To shout about its range of services, Peter Rogers Photographic has added brand spanking new Fujifilm signage to the front and side of its store. Inside too, Anthony and his staff have created a new area for the kiosks, “and if things keep progressing the way they are, I can envisage needing to add another kiosk to that. People are taking advantage of the kiosks, plus ordering online as well. We come in, in the morning, look on

the computer monitor, see there is an order for 300 prints, and people just come in and collect them. The message about the app does seem to be getting through; people like the sound of it and the fact they can do their order at home, and come in and collect, as with photo books.”

Fujifilm UK has a new Digital Media & Marketing Assistant in Louise Dickens, who further strengthens the brand’s marketing team. Having graduated university with a degree in Broadcast Journalism, in her spare time, book-loving Louise runs her blog ‘Dickens Does Books’. She joins Fujifilm from Bedford-based digital agency Aptitude, where she was a Digital Marketing Executive.

“In my new role, I’m hoping to use everything I currently know about digital marketing to grow engagement, traffic and sales for Fujifilm Photo Imaging services, in particular Fujifilm Imagine and Fujifilm Create Photobooks,” enthuses Louise.

“Along the way I hope to continue to learn and adopt the latest industry techniques to further enhance my own capabilities, and use them to create strong brands that lead in their competitive fields.”

A taste of Wonder: Fujifilm hits the road Regular BPI News readers may be familiar with the all-in-one concept of the Fujifilm Wonder Photo Shop – with retail emporiums currently doing business in Japan, Barcelona, Singapore, Colombia and New York.

In the UK, the concept – a shop built around a range of services to allow the smartphone generation to express their creativity (whether via digital or analogue services, such as Fujfilm Instax products) – was most recently referenced by Fujifilm’s stand at The Photography Show back in March.

Now, however, Fujifilm is expanding on the concept by taking the show on the road in the UK this summer. Kicking off on July 18th and running through

We want to illustrate the fantastic range of photo products that you can have around the home, educate consumers about the Instax range of photo products by offering instant Instax photos and demonstrate and educate consumers about our Imagine photo app – encouraging them to download the app to their phones. We’ll have fun ‘photo walls’ to encourage consumers to take photos at the experience itself and – naturally – encourage customers to then share their experience on social media.”

FAR-FLUNG NEWS WITH LOCAL CONSEQUENCES As a butterfly flaps its wings in one part of the world, a hurricane is happening in another – so runs the old adage.

Reminded of this, BPI News examines the effects of the April 2016 earthquakes in Japan on the photo trade internationally, and on the UK industry in particular…

M

ost of us will recall instantly the dramatic and devastating TV images of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011 and the subsequent impact, not only nationally, but internationally; the after effects handled with impressive stoicism by the Japanese themselves. Though the earthquakes in Kumamoto in Japan in April this year (beginning on the 14th) weren’t quite on the same scale in terms of devastation, there have again been ramifications internationally nonetheless.

As just one of those big names in the trade affected, Nikon was one of the first to put out a statement of condolence and sympathy; just as quickly informing us of the effect it would have on its own products and business. ‘The suppliers of parts for Nikon products such as digital cameras with interchangeable lenses, interchangeable lenses, and compact digital cameras, including those mentioned above, have been affected,” its statement read. “As such, this will inevitably impact our production and supply of products.

“We are currently investigating the situation, and will announce the details as soon as they are confirmed.

We apologise to our customers, business partners and all those who have expressed interest in these models for the delays. We are making every effort to bring these models

to market at the earliest possible date without compromising on our standards and the total Nikon product experience.”

THINKING OF JAPAN 2016

Sensors working overtime It’s easy to see why the earthquakes may have had an impact on the digital imaging trade wider afield – even if the depth of said impact was still to be accurately assessed and revealed at the time of writing.

Sony, which supplies sensor technology to the majority of the trade, also put out a series of its own statements in response to the Kumamoto earthquake. It revealed assembly operations had been affected, with various suspensions and delays in force during May at its semiconductor manufacturing plant in the region. This, it stated, was the primary manufacturing site of image sensors for digital cameras and security cameras, as well as micro display devices.

On a more positive note, assembly operations were expected to have re-started beginning May 17th. The statement also talked of ‘water-processing operations’ on the lower layers of the building being expected to re-commence beginning May 21st. There was also a hint of positivity in the conclusion that: ‘Although there was a delay in the supply of components to Sony from certain third-party suppliers that

also have manufacturing facilities in the Kumamoto region, inventory adjustments have been made and a timeframe for regaining supply levels is now in place, so no material impact is anticipated on Sony’s business operations.’

That said, it has added that: ‘Regarding the Devices and Imaging Products & Solutions segments, the impact on Sony’s consolidated results due to the effect of the earthquakes, including from opportunity losses, as well as expenses for recovery and reinforcement work, continues to be evaluated.’

In the meantime, Sony employee donations from its operations in Japan and around the world to aid the earthquake relief effort and provide emergency support measures were said to have so far exceeded 30 million yen (or £188K, as of May 23rd). The company has said that it will match employee

donations and the money will be put towards mid-to-long term recovery measures for ‘the next generation.’

You can’t rush perfection…

Latest updates from Nikon are that its previously announced cameras in the A900 and B700 will now arrive in July. The Nikon KeyMission 360 action camera will now be available in October 2016, as more time is required for software adjustment, the company says. In addition, its three new premium compact cameras in Nikon DL18-50 f/1.8-2.8, DL24-85 f/1.8-2.8 and DL24-500 f/2.8-5.6, originally scheduled for release in June 2016, are now delayed due to issues with the integrated circuit for image processing built into the cameras (again, Nikon’s own words).

The new release date was yet to be determined at the time of writing.

ecause retail involves long hours, late nights and weekend work, employees in the sector regularly rank their entitlement to annual leave as one of the most important benefits they receive from their employer – and so many spend a significant amount of time planning what they will do during their time off.

From an employer’s perspective, however, dealing with an employee’s right to annual leave can cause headaches,

especially if it coincides with staff calling in sick, thereby leaving a shop short of staff.

Mark Stevens, a solicitor at Veale Wasbrough Vizards, says that employees are entitled to 5.6 weeks’ annual leave per year. This equates to 28 days per year for those who work five days a week.

Stevens adds that a part time worker’s allowance is reduced pro rata and public holidays can count towards annual leave.

For the more irregular worker – say those working shifts – the situation is more complex. Stevens adds: “Here an employer must calculate leave based on the average shifts worked during the 12-week period immediately prior to the requested leave period.”

Naturally the law only sets the minimum and so an employer is free to offer more than statutory holiday, with the extra holiday considered as ‘contractual holiday entitlement’.

Banking on public holidays Contrary to popular myth, there is no statutory right to bank or public holidays (not that retail is bothered by them these days). Which is why, practically speaking, Stevens says the first thing to consider is the contract of employment: “If, for instance, the contract says that staff are entitled to ‘28 days’ holiday plus bank or public holidays’ then obviously employees are contractually entitled to take bank or public holidays off.”

In contrast, if the employee does not have a written contract, or their contract states that the employee is entitled only to ‘statutory holiday’ then, says Stevens, the employee has no express legal right to bank or public holidays. He adds: “If an

employee wishes to take leave on a bank or public holiday it will be a matter for discussion with the employer, as any other request for leave on any other day of the year would be.” Of course, there is still a risk that employees may gain the right to bank or public holidays if the business always allows them to take this time off.

Parity with full time workers extends to part-timers in terms of contractual rights to bank or public holidays, as they have a right to a pro-rata equivalent of their full time colleagues. “It does not matter that the part time worker does not normally work on the day on which the bank or public holiday falls,” Stevens says.

“So, an employee who works Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday will be entitled to 3/5ths of the annual bank or public holidays occurring that year, even though they never actually work on a Monday or Friday.”

How much pay?

Getting down to the nuts and bolts of pay, the law says employees are entitled to a week’s pay for each week of annual leave. Stevens states that for employees with normal, regular, hours of work, this generally means their basic salary without any bonus or irregular payments taken into account.

But calculating a week’s pay becomes more complicated where an employee’s pay fluctuates (say where pay is linked to a shift pattern that varies). In these circumstances, holiday pay will be based on their average pay during those normal working hours over the previous 12 working weeks.

Other rights The European Court of Justice (ECJ) recently found that a salesman paid partly by regular salary and partly by commission should be paid holiday pay that includes commission. If shop staff are paid commission, employers need to apply the ruling.

In addition, an Employment Appeal Tribunal found that guaranteed overtime payments should also be taken into account when calculating holiday pay.

When the right to annual

leave was first introduced, casual workers with irregular working patterns were often given ‘rolled up holiday pay’ (their holiday pay included within their regular wage payments) by their employers, in order to try to avoid paying an employee while they were not in work. The ECJ, as Stevens points out, ruled that rolled up holiday pay is unlawful as it means that a worker receives no pay while they are actually on holiday.

Handling holiday requests Making holiday requests is one thing, but getting permission can be another. Says Stevens: “Where an employee wants to take holiday at an inconvenient time, an employer can serve a counternotice on an employee to state that their holiday request cannot be accommodated.” Here the counter notice must be given at least as many calendar days before the requested leave, as the number of days which the employer is refusing.

Stevens says it’s also possible for employers to give notice ordering an employee to use their statutory holiday on specified dates. But, as with normal holiday request refusals, this notice must be at least twice the length of the period of leave that the employee is being ordered to take.

Unused holiday The subject of what to do with unused holiday often arises and the default position set by the law is that unused statutory holiday expires at the end of the holiday year. This means that an employee is not entitled to carry statutory holiday over, or to be paid in lieu of unused statutory holiday, although there are exceptions. In practice, employers sometimes agree that staff may carry over unused holiday into subsequent holiday years.

In general, though, the only time that employees should be paid for their annual leave is on the termination of their employment.

So, as is clear, the law on holiday entitlements is quite complex.

Employers in any doubt should seek advice – as employees will if they feel the need.

All change on pensions While holiday entitlements are an issue for the here and now, so too is the matter of pension planning. However, few see it as such, as retirement seems so far away and the expense of day-today living is more of a pressing issue, especially within the typically low paid world of retail.

But save we must, as the government knows well, which is why it has been changing the pensions landscape recently.

The first change to note is the introduction of pensions autoenrolment which came in for the largest employers in 2012 and which will finish for the smallest by February 2018. Eligible staff aged between 22 and State Pension Age earning the equivalent of £10,000 a year or more need to be automatically enrolled into a pension scheme (but can also opt out) with the employer making contributions too. Failure to participate can lead to stiff penalties for employers from the Pensions Regulator.

Auto-enrolment features several on-going requirements. These include enrolling staff as they become eligible; paying sufficient contributions; certifying at least every 18 months that the employer has met their auto-enrolment responsibilities; and re-enrolling all staff every three years (with an opt out).

Another change to note is the introduction of pensions freedom, which, from April 2015, gives savers the right to turn accrued pension savings into a guaranteed income for life (an annuity). Alternatively they can remain invested, drawing down from the pension when needed (income drawdown), take the whole pension as cash, or a combination of these options. Each option needs careful thought and, surprisingly, none have killed off the annuity.

It’s also worth mentioning the New State Pension, which pays around £8,000 per year. The old Basic State Pension paid around £6,000 every year depending on how much National Insurance had been paid. The promise is that this DSLR – currently topping its maker’s APS-C sensor ‘DX‘ format camera range – offers a performance akin to that of its considerably more expensive D5 big brother, packed into a more portable, lighter body…

t an SRP of £1,729.99 body only, or £2,479.99 with 16-80mm f/2.8-4 ED VR kit lens, the Nikon D500 arrives with the promise of being the D5 in different clothing; albeit one without the latter’s distinct advantage of a full frame chip. It is, rather, its manufacturer’s flagship APS-C model.

Not everyone needs that larger sensor of course, and this DX-format Nikon goes some way living up to its D5 ‘lite’ pitch courtesy of the D500 featuring the same 153-point AF system (with 99 cross-type sensors) as its bigger brother, plus ability to shoot at a relatively high-speed 10fps for up to 200 images, whether JPEG or Raw. For low light work we also get the benefit of an ISO range expandable up from a core range of ISO100-51200 to a huge ISO1640000 equivalent, pushing the D500 into best-in-class territory.

Whilst that’s impressive enough for stills shooters, those looking to capture video alongside on the Nikon system will be drawn to the fact that

Robust feel, solid performance Even with the compact 50mm f/1.4 lens we were sent (on request) with the D500 body attached, the camera feels reassuringly robust, a large deep handgrip ensuring it won’t feel front heavy if used handheld with a telephoto lens otherwise attached.

As well as the pull out and tilt LCD screen lending itself to video work, a large and bright optical viewfinder makes this camera a boon for shooting stills too, the AF response (in combination with our supplied lens) being so swift and near silent that we were prompted to check our images afterwards to ensure focusing had actually occurred.

In most respects the D500’s control layout suggests a professional camera rather than a consumer one.

We get a top plate LCD window that displays key settings as well as the larger backplate LCD, flanked on either side by rows of buttons, with a nicely chunky mode wheel sitting on the opposite corner of the top plate.

Command dials at the front and back of the grip also make for easier navigation of settings and functions,

as does the familiar four-way control pad. In short, everything is present and correct and in its right place. Hey, if it ain’t broke then why would Nikon fix it?

So, who should you be pitching the 20.9 effective megapixel D500 to? Given the high-ish price tag, we imagine die-hard Nikon enthusiasts in the main, or pros wanting a second body as a back up perhaps. Street prices looked to be holding firm around £1729, body only, at the time of writing.
