Happy Summer to our Maine Trucking Family,

Let me first say what an honor and a privilege it is to be elected as Chair of such a well-respected group of trucking professionals. Being the first woman to hold this position speaks to the changes our industry has been working on to make trucking more collaborative and welcoming to women. I truly believe that everyone in trucking serves a unique purpose in making our industry tick, as evidenced by all of the amazing people that you will read about in this edition of the Maine Motor Transport News.

Championship Saturday lived up to its name this year, with four separate competitions taking place to recognize our industry’s safest, smartest, most skilled professionals. For readers unfamiliar, the events include the seasoned pro’s competing in the Maine Professional Truck Driving Championships and the Professional Technician Skills Competitions. Then these professionals have the opportunity to share their experience by mentoring the next generation who are competing in the Future Trucker Competition and the FutureTech events. It is truly inspiring to know that the traditions of excellence, whether its drivers or technicians, are being passed down to the next generation and it is MMTA members who are making it happen.

I would like to personally thank everyone who was involved in making Championship Saturday such a success. Our very own Randy DeVault always does a great job running the show, making sure everything runs like a welloiled machine. I know he would agree when I say it is volunteers and the MMTA members who provide their time, equipment, tools and resources that are invaluable to producing an industry-leading day of camaraderie, safety and professionalism. Thank you all.

One of the things I intend to focus on during my two-year term as Chairwoman is to encourage business networking throughout our industry. We have all been through a lot of storms trucking has thrown at us over the years and we need to be prepared to weather future storms to keep the legacy of trucking going strong. Past generations seemed to embrace getting together for formal MMTA functions, meetings and even informal chats just to keep in touch, and these face-to-face interactions seem to have taken a back seat over time for a number of reasons – the pandemic, time constraints, shifting priorities, to name just a few.

Whatever the reasons, we want to change it. We will be rejuvenating last year’s MMTA “Happy Hour” idea and rebranding it as “Business and Brews.” These gatherings will be informal – no agendas, no speakers – as a way to help us all network, meet new people in our close-knit trucking community, and build a sense of camaraderie that will serve us well into the future. We want you to consider bringing current and future leaders from your company or from your sphere of influence, young and old alike. We can all benefit from building relationships in a social setting and hope you can join us.

These “Business and Brews” events will be held at Mason’s Brewing Company in Brewer on Thursday, August 8th and at Rising Tide Brewery in Portland on Thursday, August 15th with both events running from 4-6 pm. It will be a cash bar, but MMTA will be providing light appetizers. While not required, we are asking people to RSVP online at www. mmta.com/businessbrews, and we hope you and some of your trucking friends will join us for a good time.
