ecoming an author has never been one of Reggie Watts life goals.

“I don’t read books,” the musician, comedian, former “Late Late Show with James Cordon” bandleader and all around cool dude said over the phone this month. “I haven’t read a book since 1998.”

And yet his first hardcover hit the shelves this week.

“Great Falls, MT: Fast Times, Post-Punk Weirdos and a Tale of Coming Home Again” was released on Oct. 17 by Tiny Reparations Books, a division of Penguin Random House. Watts refers to the book, a memoir of growing up in Montana and beyond, as a “mem.”

“I ‘mem-ed’ it up a couple years ago when my management was like ‘you should write a book,’” Watts said. He wasn’t immediately excited by the prospect, but eventually gave into the idea of telling his own story. “It’s easiest to write about oneself,” he said.

The self-professed weirdo was “existing” when he answered the phone to talk about “Great Falls, MT” and his upcoming Bozeman show. Watts will perform his unique blend of improvised musical comedy at the Elm in Bozeman on Monday, Oct. 23.

While the idea of telling the truth (or not) in comedy has been in the spotlight recently with revelations that stories from Hasan Minhaj’s comedy specials had some element of fabrication, Watts doesn’t try to change the plot of his life for an audience.

“I think I’m telling the truth when I’m telling stories about my childhood,” Watts said. “I’m sure there are embellishments that I’m unaware of, but I’m not purposely trying to make mine more exciting.”

“Generally the truth is far more fantastic than what you make up,” he said.

On stage, Watts is hard to pin down, flowing from observation to a musical reaction and back again.

“If there’s something in the air or something hits me right before I go on stage, someone says something, then I’ll use that in the moment,” Watts said.

Because of the improvisational nature, even Watts doesn’t know where the show may end up, where the mood will take him.

“I want to have a great time and I want to tap into something that starts to resonate,” Watts said. “I’m up there and I say things or I’m doing something and it starts to build on itself. I just go in the direction

that it seems to want to go.”

Sometimes a story, like those he tells in “Great Falls, MT,” sneaks in.

“If it’s a longer show and I’m feeling a little bit more historical, then I’ll definitely go there,” he said.

Mainly though, Watts relies on the “power of absurdity” and the vastness of his own imagination.

“Everything is so infinite,” he said. “The way that you can look in it — you can always find a new angle on something. That’s the thing that fuels my entire show, is being able to have the flexibility to see things in multiple ways so I can find things that resonate with over half of the people.”

Anyone who was surprised at first that Elizabeth Banks became a game show host must be even more stunned that she has stayed with it for so long.

Following the recent box office success she had as the director of the movie “Cocaine Bear,” the actress is continuing to preside over the ABC revival of “Press Your Luck,” which recently began its fifth season on Tuesdays. The program has been a summer staple in recent years, but having new episodes available came in handy for the network, which delayed the series’ return to have it as fresh content during a fall television season that has been impacted significantly by entertainment industry strikes.

Banks still puts forth high energy — and an enjoyable dose of sass — as she guides three players through each week’s hourlong game. They take spins on a giant board listing prizes and cash awards, trying to avoid hitting a so-called “Whammy” when they choose to stop; if they do land on one, they lose the winnings they’ve accrued up to that point. The contestant who wins the initial round gets to proceed to a session that makes even bigger rewards available.

Banks’s involvement in “Press Your Luck,” of which she’s also an executive producer, is indicative of the variety she has said she wants to maintain in her work. She has long spoken about creating opportunities for herself, and she’s surely destined to get more of those in the directing realm, given that “Cocaine Bear” became part of the national conversation during its release and grossed nearly three times its budget at the box office.

She also will voice Pebbles in “Bedrock,” a projected, animated Fox series (which she’ll also executive-produce) that will offer an adult take on “The Flintstones” – so it seems one can bank on the notion that TV won’t be losing Banks soon.

‘Godzilla’ roars again in a high-tech, big-budget update Bryan Cranston, David Strathairn and Godzilla ... all notable performers with many screen credits. Put them together, though, and you’re likely to get reaffirmation that size does matter.

That’s just the way the 2014 version of “Godzilla” plays out, as TNT shows it Sunday, Oct. 22 (followed immediately by the clearly cut-from-the-same-cloth “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and “Godzilla vs. Kong,” making that quite a roaring day). It takes a while for the title creature to show up, but once he does, Bryan Cranston no one else in the film can hold a candle to him. That is, except in “Godzilla” the other monsters he has to fight, and their presence positions him as more a hero than a villain (not unlike many of the classic Japanese “Godzilla” movies).

Two other fearsome beings also bring Godzilla onto the scene. They’re known as MUTOs – even their name suggests they won’t be a lot of fun, at least for those physically threatened by them – and their life source is anything radioactive, causing alarm for the nuclear engineer played

by Cranston. They’re about to give birth to many little MUTOs, and if that happens, goodbye, Earth.

The problem is how mankind can destroy them without destroying itself in the process. Enter Godzilla, and that’s where the movie really kicks into high gear, with the special-effects maestros taking over ... and letting the battling behemoths pretty much level San Francisco as their fight rages on.

It’s inevitable that’s how this “Godzilla” story will wind up, and director Gareth Edwards delivers the goods on that count. What’s disappointing is how many good actors are left on the sidelines in service of letting the monsters take center stage.

Not only are there Cranston and Strathairn, but also Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche (yes, that is correct, Juliette Binoche was in a “Godzilla” movie), Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe.

They all do enough to justify their paychecks, but it’s actually co-star Aaron Taylor-Johnson who gets the most sustained opportunity to show his stuff.

Bruce Willis OF MOONLIGHTING ON ABC Q: Did Bruce Willlis ever do another series after “Moonlighting”?

A: Not in terms of being a regular cast member, but he did have another significant TV role afterward … and it’s on display often, given how frequently the series in question is still shown. He guest-starred on “Friends” for three episodes in 2000 as Paul, the disapproving father of Ross’s (David Schwimmer) considerably younger girlfriend Elizabeth (Alexandra Holden), and the two men eventually came to a meeting of the minds thanks to certain information Ross had about Paul (which the latter man didn’t want revealed).

Willis earned a Primetime Emmy Award for the portrayal, marking the second one he won, his first having come for his work as wisecracking sleuth David Addison on “Moonlighting.” He also did guest shots on such shows as “Ally McBeal” and “Mad About You,” but movies had the bulk of his creative attention after he scored an enormous hit with the original “Die Hard” in 1988.

That being said, the actor also hosted “Saturday Night Live” a couple of times, and he was the good-natured target of a “Comedy Central Roast” in 2018, with his ex-wife Demi Moore and “Moonlighting” leading lady Cybill Shepherd among those who took humorous shots at him. As is traditional for such events, though, Willis got to even the score with his own remarks at the end of that show. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who played Willis’ younger self in the 2012 movie “Looper,” was the host of the “Roast.”

Once in the house, Dave Grohl finds himself grappling with supernatural forces that threaten both the completion of the album and the lives of the band.

Charlton Heston’s “Soylent Green” offers food for thought

One of the best movies of Charlton Heston’s later career, the 1973 sci-fi drama “Soylent Green” leads off the final night of Turner Classic Movies’ Star of the Month tribute to the actor Wednesday, Oct. 25. Since it’s set in 2022, some viewers may get a rueful chuckle out of its portrait of a densely polluted, overpopulated New York … but there’s also something quite moving about its rumination of the world the way it used to be.

Heston plays a policeman whose investigation of a tycoon’s (Joseph Cotten) murder exposes him to the good life the slain man lived. That encompasses such then-novelties as fresh beef and strawberries, some of which the cop spirits away to share with his friend and assistant – or “book,” in the parlance of this tale. That role marks the final performance of Edward G. Robinson, who’s thoroughly moving and simply wonderful here. Leigh Taylor-Young, Chuck Connors and Brock Peters are among other familiar faces on hand.

The 2023 NASCAR playoffs have been electrifying, with one particular driver slowly becoming a household name: 25-year-old William Byron of Charlotte, N.C. Putting on a spectacular performance, the North Carolina native is in the midst of his best season yet.
