detective, these are 2018’s 20 Under 40.

JESSICA STILLMAN, Executive Director Befrienders Bozeman For Jessica Stillman, it’s pretty simple: “I always love being involved,” the 32-year-old says.

And involved the Four Corners native is, in everything from Music on Main to Eagle Mount; from Thrive to Bozeman Bike Week.

“I’ve always been a really involved community member,” she says. “While I never had the funds to get involved in organizations, I had time. I gave my time to things that I was passionate about and I never stopped.”

Now as the executive director for Befrienders Bozeman, a nonprofit that pairs senior citizens with volunteers

who spend time together each week, Stillman is right where she wants to be.

“I’m really lucky to do the work that I do,” she says. “I’ve traveled a lot, but I’ve never found a place that I like as much as Bozeman.”

They key, she says, is having a community that is as collectively selfless and altruistic as the Gallatin Valley.

“We are so incredibly fortunate to have that sense of community here and a sense of giving back that’s so rare to find,” she says.

“How lucky are we to live in a place like this?”

ANGELA DES JARDINS, Director Montana Space Grant Consortium For Angela Des Jardins, the last few years were all a build up to the largest celestial event in recent memory: the 2017 solar eclipse.

Des Jardins, who wears several hats (director of the Montana Space Grant Consortium and NASA EPSCoR, as well as an assistant research professor in Montana State University’s physics department), was the scientist who led MSU’s Eclipse Ballooning Project to measure and record last summer’s rare total eclipse.

And though the dust may have settled, Des Jardins is still working to promote not only the findings of her team’s experiments, but science writ large.

“Our initial goals were to have a meaningful impact on the students participating and do some good science.

We are really happy with both of those

things,” she says.

A third-generation Bozemanite, Des Jardins sees the responsibility of scientists as twofold.

“One is providing the inspiration for young people go into those STEM fields.

Students tend to be interested in those fields until middle school and then lose interest. We need to make sure we’re doing these kinds of things that are inspiring to young people,” she says.

“The other thing is we need to think carefully about how we’re educating them in general. In order to really make sure we’re keeping an economic advantage, we need to be thinking about how to better educate our students,” she adds.

And to be a part of all that?

“I’m a lucky, lucky person.”

ANTHONY HUTCHINGS, Bozeman Police Department detective Growing up in Townsend, being a police officer never crossed Anthony Hutchings’ mind.

But then he went on a ride along with a Broadwater County Sheriff’s Office deputy and everything changed.

“It was an eye-opener,” the 32-year-old says. “I had some strong figures in high school and the impact that someone in that role has in people’s lives appealed to me.”

He was hired first as a control officer by the Broadwater County Sheriff’s Office and then by the Bozeman Police Department, where he eventually worked his way up and is now one of the department’s small group of sex crimes detectives.

It’s a journey that Hutchings can still hardly believe.

“There’s some pretty horrendous things

ERIC FISHER, owner Bozeman Sports Camp Eric Fisher believes in the power of sports.

During his time studying health enhancement at Montana State University, Fisher began working with the MSU Sports Camp, leading kids of all ages in a variety of sports. After a few years, the camp was set to shut down, so Fisher and his wife BreAnna took it over and rebranded it Bozeman Sports Camp.

As owner and director, Fisher loves to see kids (his two included) learn about teamwork, failure and physical exercise through the camp’s programs.

“The value to me is seeing these kids be active in the summer and finding a sport and an activity that they enjoy and that they’re good at,” the 31-year4

old Billings native says. “Being able to take that into the school year with some confidence is really important.”

Even in his free time, Fisher is heavily involved in physical education, working as the head track coach at Bozeman High School and teaching PE at Hawthorne Elementary School.

In addition, he volunteers his time at Hope Lutheran Church and with Shape Montana.

“Sports teach so many great lessons of life and I’m excited to see my kids learn those lessons,” he says.

“Learning how to fail, acquire skills, overcome those failures and ultimately become more confident as they become more successful.”

you experience doing this job. But that’s what leads to what I enjoy most about this profession: It could be the worst part of someone’s life and you’re there to make it better,” he says.

Hutchings also volunteers with Special Olympics Montana and spends as much time as he can with his wife, two children and drift boat.

But as for work, it’s the impact he makes as a detective helping the local community that makes the long hours and more-than-occasional frustration worthwhile.

“These are strong people, but even strong people need help once in a while,” he says of victims. “You’re helping someone get through an awful, awful experience. But it doesn’t define who they are.”

JAMES ROLIN, owner Cowboy Cricket Farms In a large warehouse outside Belgrade, James Rolin and his wife Kathy have hit paydirt with a type of ranching uncommon in Montana: the wrangling and harvesting of tens of thousands of crickets.

In the year or so since its founding, Cowboy Cricket Farms has gained notoriety not just in the valley, but across the country for its work with what many see as the future of animal protein bred for human consumption.

The facility has a capacity of 10 to 20 million crickets, but Rolin is currently focused on breeding what he calls a “super cricket” — high in Omega-3 fatty acids — and developing a system that would automate a lot of the heavy lifting of raising the crickets.

Rolin credits the success of the business to the support of not only the local

community (his landlord recently built a second warehouse for the business to use as a commercial kitchen), but also state and federal organizations from Montana State University to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

“It’s been absolutely astonishing,” the 29-yearold says of the support. “Starting a business is always an uphill battle, but it feels like we have so much help.”

In addition to the countless hours Rolin puts in at the farm each week, he also squeezes in classes at MSU (where he’s studying business marketing), Officer Candidate School with the National Guard, as well as public speaking appearances and leisure time with his three children.

“It’s taken a lot of hustle to get here, but I’m really happy,” he says.

KEVIN SYLVESTER, director Family Promise of Gallatin Valley The executive director of Family Promise of Gallatin Valley, a nonprofit that provides housing resources and transitional housing for area homeless families, Kevin Sylvester likes to talk about privilege.

“It’s easy to be dismissive of homeless families, but the reality is a lot of people were born out of poverty and we take that for granted,” he says. “We grew up in these environments and with these opportunities and it’s all by chance.”

Instead of judgment, people should work to make a more positive influence, he adds.

“Affordable housing is always in the news, but if every organization or individual did something it would be a

CHARLEY FRANKLIN, associate principal SMA Architects Growing up in Bozeman, Charley Franklin always wanted to find a marriage between his interest in building and art. Through Montana State University’s architecture program, he found it.

“I was always intrigued with art and craftsmanship and trying to combine those two ideas,” he says. “Architecture was a joining of my interests.”

Franklin’s interests led him to a position at Prugh & Lenon Architects, then SMA Architects, where he currently works as associate principal, helping design buildings such as the Yellowstone Hall at MSU and the new One 11 Lofts project in downtown Bozeman.

The 38-year-old’s interests have evolved slightly over time, and he describes his 6

current focus as “helping people have a better experience at work or at school through architecture.”

“I’m trying to find ways architecture can help people in their daily lives,” he says.

“My goal is to leave the built environment better than I left it.”

In between design sketches, Franklin finds time to ski with his wife and three children, as well as volunteer coach both soccer and basketball .

“I feel this community has given me a lot and that it’s important to give back,” Franklin says. “Volunteer work really recharges my battery and reminds me who I am. It’s a powerful thing and feels very fulfilling.”

step in the right direction. What we all need is a community of support, and that’s what we try to provide.”

The 32-year-old is focused on his own self-improvement as well, mainly through his pursuit of a Master’s in public administration at Montana State University, as well as his relationship with his wife, which he calls “an honor.”

As for Family Promise, Sylvester describes the group as privileged in its own way. It would not be half the organization it is without volunteer and community support, he says.

“We have an amazingly supportive and opportunistic set of people who are motivated to see Family Promise succeed,” he says. “I’m consistently blown away.”

CALEB WALKER, owner Cold Smoke Coffeehouse Caleb Walker drinks a lot of coffee. Once, a coworker tried to match the 32-year-old cup for cup and was forced to quit before noon.

Surrounded as he is by coffee in all forms, at both of Cold Smoke Coffeehouse’s locations, Walker’s habits come as no surprise.

Neither does his energy, which is constant and infectious.

But under his caffeinated exterior is a thoughtful, compassionate individual whose success has only cemented his interpersonal approach to business.

A former youth pastor, Walker, a Bozeman native, opened the first iteration of Cold Smoke as an espresso bar west of town. It was a few years before the 19th Avenue location opened, but even in the early stages Walker was laserfocused on community.

“It was about serving the people here first

and foremost,” Walker says. The second piece, he adds, is understanding that coffee as a commodity comes from largely underdeveloped countries, and as such coffee shops are obligated to give back. Cold Smoke donates a portion of its profits to a watershed restoration project in Africa, as well as holding a “nonprofit of the month” fund.

“That’s all part of our DNA,” Walker says.

“We’re here to give back. It’s part of our desire to love the community.”

Walker plans to finish his Master’s degree at the Yellowstone Theological Institute in the next few years, but coffee, he says, will still come first.

“We cannot do what we do without our employees,” he says. “They are the foundation of the business and we don’t exist without their work.”

KRISTIN LAIRD, marketing communications manager Foundant Technologies Through her work as Foundant Technologies marketing communications manager, Kristin Laird gets to scratch the philanthropic itch that, for her, never seems to go away.

Foundant’s software, which allows nonprofits to more easily apply for funding, is the perfect fit for the 38-yearold Whitefish native, who has quite the giving streak of her own.

Laird works closely with Haven, where she is part of the organization’s End the Silence speaker series, aiming to educate the community on domestic violence issues from the perspective of survivors.

She and her two children also love to volunteer at Heart of the Valley, and Foundant itself has a matched giving program that encourages employees like

SUZI BERGET WHITE, director Montana Women’s Business Center If you are at all involved in the Gallatin Valley business scene, you likely know the name Suzi Berget White.

As the do-it-all business consultant at Prospera Business Network, White has helped build the Montana Women’s Business Center from the ground up, expanding the organization’s professional training program to more than 50 events each year and nurturing a web of more than 100 entrepreneurs.

White has also emphasized the importance of partnerships, connecting Prospera to the Montana Manufacturing Extension Center, the Small Business Development Center and SCORE, among others.

What you might not know is White 8

operates a sculpture business and has a penchant for converting Sprinter vans, in which she and her husband and three children take long road trips across the country. In addition, the 39-year-old is an avid telemark skier and mountain biker.

But despite her wide-ranging expertise, Berget-White feels she continues to soak up new tips, tricks and skills almost every day.

“I’m learning constantly from everyone I work with,” she says. “I want to make sure we’re educating businesses and that means I need to know all the opportunities that are out there.”

“Everyone I work with is invested and supportive and dynamic,” she adds.

“That’s just the way Bozeman is.”

Laird to donate their time or money.

“All these things are really close to my heart,” Laird says.

Outside work, Laird enjoys snowshoeing, camping and reading (“The Nightingale” and “Living With Intent” are two titles recently on her bedside table).

Laird likes to say that her attitude is commonplace in Bozeman: A city where people care about the place they live, recognize the help they received on their respective paths and want to repay the favor.

“It’s full of people who have a strong sense of Montana community,” she says. “There are a lot of people here who are passionate about keeping the community the way it is, or even working to make it better.”

STEPHANIE MCDOWELL, executive director Bridgercare As the nonprofit’s executive director, Stephanie McDowell has overseen Bridgercare’s long-awaited move to its new space off Oak Street. And having started working as a volunteer at the organization’s front desk back in 2003, McDowell can attest to what a larger office will mean for not only Bridgercare, but also the people it serves.

“It was a big project,” McDowell says.

“But it’s gotten people excited, and we need people to be excited.”

McDowell, who graduated from Montana State University with a degree in cell biology, had visions of being a practicing physician. But following volunteer work at the university’s Voice Center as well as Haven, she decided to focus her energy elsewhere.

“That really lit my fire for women’s issues and reproductive health and healthy relationships,” she says of her time with the two organizations. “Over those years, my perspective and exposure really drove what I do today.”

Everyone knows the changes that have taken place with regards to access to health care and contraception over the last several years, McDowell says, but for the most part organizations like Bridgercare have been insulated due to the community’s strong support and the shoe leather work ethic of volunteers and staff members.

“I love the people,” she says. “My colleagues are so dedicated, and this job is not easy. It’s an honor just to work with them. They remind me that there are good people in this world.”

KELLI STANLEY, owner Tree of Life Doula Care With five children of her own, it comes as no surprise that friends and family members came to Kelli Stanley for advice about childbirth and parenting.

It comes as no surprise, too, that her role as childbirth guru eventually led to Stanley founding a doula service, Tree of Life Doula Care, based in Manhattan, that offers care and advice for families across the Gallatin Valley.

“It’s one of those things where people keep saying things to you like, ‘This is what you should do,’ and if you listen long enough you get pointed in the right direction,” Stanley says with a laugh.

Tree of Life follows a collaborative care model, meaning the agency employs five certified doulas who offer everything from

lactation advice to bereavement counselling to education and meal preparation.

“We don’t have the care we had years ago where we live near our families,” Stanley says. “A doula can really be there with a family during birth and postpartum and fill in those gaps and be there when someone needs it, as well as provide education.”

Stanley is also involved in a variety of other childbirth-related causes in the valley, including serving as the president of the Montana Childbirth Collective and helping found the Gallatin Breastfeeding Coalition.

“When you’re really passionate about something and realize it’s where you want to be, it makes it easy,” the 39-year-old says.

“I feel blessed and humbled that I get to be a part of all this.”

CHRIS ODEGARD, chief merchandising officer Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply Soon after starting his job at Murdoch’s Ranch and Home Supply, Chris Odegard received a call from a customer whose gun safe hadn’t been delivered on time. Odegard, a Montana State University graduate with a degree in business management, got off the phone and said, “I’m going to solve this problem myself.”

And that, Odegard says, has been the key to not only his career, but his life.

“What’s made my career is solving problems and helping people work together,” the 36-yearold says. “I have a lot of experience helping resolve conflicts.”

From stocking shelves part-time, Odegard has risen through the ranks to become the chief merchandising officer for the store, responsible for ordering the products that customers see on

KATIE MAZUREK owner Element Law Group In 2016, four days before she was set to open her practice, Element Law Group, Katie Mazurek was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer.

A self-described “child of divorce,” Mazurek wanted her practice to focus on collaborative divorce, a progressive form of mediation that aims to empower individuals rather than take their decisions away from them. The 35-year-old is now in remission, but the disease put her desire for altruistic-style law into even sharper focus.

“I’m acutely aware that I would not be here if it weren’t for our family and friends and community,” Mazurek says. “I feel very fortunate to be practicing where I am and have received a lot in my life in the last two years. Element is here to give back, that’s the only thing I can do to carry forward all that 10

has been given to me.”

Over the past few years, Mazurek has trained more than 40 lawyers around the state in the collaborative divorce process.

She also works with the Gallatin Legal Assistance Clinic, which provides pro bono legal assistance to low-income families, as well as Leadership Montana. On top of that, she’s a writer, triathlete and public speaker (she spoke at TEDxBozeman in 2017).

“I believe very passionately in access to justice. Just because someone doesn’t have $200 an hour doesn’t mean they shouldn’t get access to legal care,” Mazurek says. And it’s that selfless sentiment, she says, that makes the state great.

“So much wouldn’t happen if it weren’t for people’s generosity.”

“I have a passion for people and processors and technology. Those are my three big things,” Odegard says. “How are people wired as an individual, and putting processes and technologies in place to support the business.”

Outside of work, Odegard volunteers with Special Olympics Montana, which he describes as an “exceptional organization” and through Journey Church. He also does Crossfit with his wife and loves to hike with his two children in tow.

But he credits much of his success to others.

“I’m not successful on my own. I’ve been blessed by having leaders in my life who have demonstrated great leadership to me,” he says.

“That’s how I’ve learned a lot, through others.”

“The quality of people here is so high.”

JACOB WERNER senior vice president D.A. Davidson & Co. To put it simply, Jacob Werner loves to work with people.

That’s reflected in his day job, where he coordinates, drafts financial plans and helps coordinate the futures of dozens of clients as the senior vice president of D.A. Davidson & Co. But perhaps even more so, it’s reflected in what Werner, who moved to Bozeman from Oregon in 2000, does in his free time.

The 39-year-old has been a member of the board of more local organizations than you can shake a stick at, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Gallatin County, Bridger Bowl and Congregation Beth Shalom. He also volunteers with the Bozeman Schools Foundation, Thrive’s

CAP mentorship program and D.A. Davidson’s many community outreach efforts throughout the year.

But for Werner, giving back makes sense given the help he received from organizations and community members when he was young.

“Philanthropy is a core Jewish value and growing up I benefited from organizations that led the way like that,” he says.

In what little free time he has, Werner enjoys skiing, mountain biking and spending time with his wife and two daughters.

And as for future goals?

“I’m living the goal,” Werner says.

SARAH LUKES, founder Agile Focus Designs Art and science might be vastly different areas of expertise, but Sarah Lukes manages to excel in both.

As the founder of Agile Focus Designs, a company that she got off the ground in 2015, Lukes helps build fast-focusing imaging technology for microscopes, allowing researchers to easily examine live events rather than lifeless, static samples.

Lukes also spent nearly a decade playing violin with the Bozeman Symphony Orchestra, as well as some time with the Second String Orchestra.

But the 35-year-old Wyoming native remains as humble as they come. As part of her effort to give back, Lukes performs science-based outreach for students from preschool all the way up to Montana State University undergraduates, whom she

RYAN FLYNN, lead Community Food Co-op Ryan Flynn may be the lead and lone actor in one of the most well-received local theatre productions in recent memory, but he still doesn’t necessarily see himself as an actor.

After graduating from Montana State University’s film program, where he helped fellow students by acting in their productions, Flynn was approached by a friend to act in a live version of a radio theatre performance at what would become the Verge Theater. Since he had nothing else going on, the Bozeman native agreed.

Seven years and countless performances later, Flynn had fully immersed himself in the local theater scene.

“Giving other people the encouragement to try these things they might be intimidated by is really gratifying for me,” Flynn says 12

of his time on the stage, most recently as Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, the German transgender WWII survivor featured in the Pulitzer Prize-winning one-man play “I Am My Own Wife.”

Between acting, music and freelancing as a prosthetic makeup artist (you may have seen his hauntingly realistic recreations of film and television characters around Halloween each year), Flynn finds time to work at the Community Food Co-op. He is also married to “the coolest person ever” and enjoys trying new restaurants and supporting other local artists.

“I feel so privileged to be able to work so closely with all these great people and be a part of the growing artistic community,” Flynn says. “Gosh does it give me so much joy.”

mentors. This type of exposure is critical in fostering a love for science, particularly in younger kids, Lukes says.

And she should know. Growing up in Casper, Wyoming, Lukes went to summer science camps and even participated in an internship program at the University of Wyoming as a high schooler.

“That got me into engineering,” she says. “It’s important to get kids excited about engineering and science because it shows them that you can dream something up, make it and have it do what you want it to do.”

That type of creative freedom, she says, stays with you.

“You can build any design you can dream up.”

SCOTT CHRISTENSEN, director of conservation Greater Yellowstone Coalition Growing up in eastern Idaho and Utah, Scott Christensen always saw the outdoors as his home.

Now 39 and the director of conservation for the Greater Yellowstone Coalition, Christensen gets to explore the off-thebeaten-path trails, secluded rivers and unnamed knolls as his day job.

In his role (one of many he’s held at the nonprofit over the last 15 years) Christensen works on a wide range of issues across the huge swath of land that encompasses the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, from grizzly conservation to advocating against mining in Paradise Valley.

“When I was younger, I hoped to find a way to work in places and on issues that I’m really passionate about,” Christensen says. “To be able to be in a position like this is really special and I don’t take this for granted.”

The job often takes him far afield, exposing him to new places where he might bring his four children.

“I always want to come back with a fly rod or a heavy backpack,” he says.

Through his work with the GYC and an ongoing Montana State University graduate project with the incipient national park system in Mongolia, Christensen says he’s never been more appreciative of the impact of community.

“Conservation doesn’t happen without people,” he says. “One of the things that makes an organization like the Greater Yellowstone Coalition possible is having a community like Bozeman to be anchored in. We all in some way would point back to the community of Bozeman as a big factor in what drives, motivates and supports us.”

COLLEEN HERRINGTON, owner BD&H Law Firm Following a period as a JAG officer in the national guard, Colleen Herrington knew she had to do something to help the large veteran community in Bozeman.

So she spearheaded a more than yearlong effort to build a veterans treatment court as part of Bozeman Municipal Court, a post-conviction program for veterans who commit crimes and have an identifiable substance abuse or mental health need.

“I really felt like this was really important knowing how big the veteran community was in the Gallatin Valley,” Herrington says.

The treatment court is getting underway, and its birth was in addition to Herrington’s day jobs as a municipal court judge and the founder of a local law firm.

She also finds time to volunteer at Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Gallatin Valley, where she has a little sister.

“It’s nice to have something completely away from court,” she says. “If we start young, we can really make differences in people’s lives.”

And the key to Herrington’s success?

“I’ve always walked through doors that were open.”
