A Lot of Laughs and History Seal This Museum Friendship

ach Thursday afternoon, Barb Clawson and Emily Copeland enter a building that was the county jail a hundred years ago and descend the stairs to their square cement workroom in the basement.

The floor is painted gray. So are the walls, though they’re mostly hidden behind jerry-rigged plywood shelving built to hold hundreds of old, oversized, red, brown, green and black leather-bound books.

Even the ceiling is gray. A spare, single light fixture hangs from the middle of it, casting a low-watt glow onto the rectangular table where they work side by side. Steps away is the door to the underground tunnel that once facilitated secure prisoner transfers between the jail and an adjacent courthouse.

The women are volunteers at the Gallatin History Museum. They

might joke about being in a jail cell themselves from time to time. But then they’re always joking. Former Executive Director John Russell used to call down to them that they were having “entirely too much fun down there.”

They love their projects, whether they are computerizing handwritten records or transcribing journal entries, inventorying donations to the museum or working at the task they most enjoy: searching long ago copies of the Bozeman Courier and Avant Courier newspapers, or the court dockets or sheriff’s logbooks, in search of historical snippets and stories for the “Pages from the Past” column they compile for the museum’s quarterly magazine. Said Emily, “History really comes alive when you can put stories to it.

Then you realize that it’s all stories.”

The women recalled an afternoon they spent perusing sheriff’s records from the late 1920s and early ’30s.

When they noticed a steady rise in arrests of young men for vagrancy and petty theft, they realized they had discovered the Great Depression hitting Bozeman.

Each time they draft a new magazine column, they gather stories about the season they’re writing for. Newspaper reports from summers past are always filled with fishing stories, usually of catches of hundreds of trout.

The July 17, 1897, issue of the Avant Courier had a different take on the theme: “A man named Quin was arrested and brought to town Wednesday by Game Warden Keown and charged with the crime of using dynamite in Sixteen Mile creek, causing the whole sale destruction of fish in that stream. He was bound over in a $500 bond to appear at the next term of the district court.”

A week later, the same paper reported: “On Tuesday last, Antonio Drago, a prospector employed in the Natural Bridge mining district

by Joe Swindlehurst of Livingston undertook to snap the head off a rattlesnake with the result he is now a corpse. In his attempt . . . Drago was bitten on the forefinger, but succeeded in killing the snake and completed the job, according to his ante mortem statement, by biting its head off. On his way to Big Timber Drago drank two quarts of diluted alcohol, one quart of brandy and one quart of whiskey. The general opinion was that the liquor and not the snake venom killed him.”

From the Oct. 11, 1922, Bozeman Courier they shared this good news: “Wednesday afternoon the citizens of Bozeman dropped all matters of business at 5 o’clock, the stores closed and everyone joined in the big parade formed to go out and dedicate the Seventh Avenue road, which had just been completed. Headed by the Bozeman Chamber of Commerce band, a big procession of automobiles filled with citizens passed through Main street and out over the new highway. There was joy in the hearts of everyone.”

Thanks to Emily and Barb, the joys and quirks of all manner of long ago events can still be appreciated today.

Becoming My Mother

Ah

the arrogance and ignorance of youth. While we suffered through the pangs of adolescence and young adulthood, we thought oh so highly of ourselves.

We figured we could race through fire and sail out the other end unscathed, and leap tall buildings in a single bound. Watch out world, here we were, ready to do great things.

We would age gracefully, if we aged at all, and we would never grow old and fall prey to aches, pains, gray hair and other unmentionable things that happen to old people.

Back when the world was young and my sister and I rode pterodactyls to school, the two of us would rummage through old photographs of our parents and grandparents. We would inspect the clothes and hairdos and poke fun at the way these incredibly old people looked, acted and dressed.

I remember one picture in particular of our mother, who must have been the frightful age of 40 at the time the picture was taken. My sister and I laughed as we pointed out the frumpy (to us) dress, the antiquated hairdo

and my poor mother’s sagging body parts. In truth, it was not a very flattering picture, but it did not deserve the ridicule we gave it. In our pride, we assured ourselves and each other that no way, never for all eternity, would we ever look like our mother or become anything at all like her. Perish the thought.

As usual, the joke is on me. I pulled out a box of pictures the other day and that very same picture stared up at me with what I swear was a smirk at the corners of my mother’s mouth.

(Pictures can mock you; trust me on this.) I figure I am at least 20 years older now than she was when that not terribly complimentary picture was snapped. The dress still looks frumpy, the hairdo definitely did not do her justice, and the body parts did indeed droop. However, the face staring back at me looked younger and far prettier than I remembered, and as I looked closely, I realized I definitely have become my mother, at least in looks, a fact my sister recently pointed out to me.

I thought about my own olderlooking body, my own less-than-stylish clothing, and my hair that I keep

permed so I don’t have to do anything more than run a comb through the tangles once or twice a day.

Hmm. What did I find so hilarious about that picture when I was young and stupid?

Remembering with chagrin the way my sister and I chortled at that picture when we were silly and naive, the pomposity we felt as we assured ourselves we would never look like that, made me laugh ruefully.

When I think about the exceptional qualities my mother possessed, I hope that I HAVE become her in more ways than just looks. How much I resemble her in appearance pales beside the hope that I also now resemble her in the ways I choose to live my life. She loved my father and showed it, she cared passionately for her children, and she always lived with morals and ethics at the forefront. She kept a clean house, served as an exemplary example of a wonderful wife and mother and lived her beliefs. She served her family, her church and her community in many, many ways. She expected nothing but the best from her children. The lessons she taught, the ethics she instilled in us, the examples she set and the way she did tasks are ingrained in my core.

I can still hear her admonishing me when I do something she would find wasteful, unprofessional or less than my best. I can hear her chide me about how I do my dusting and

the haste in which I do dishes. My mother kept the dust at bay, while I figure I will dust twice a year whether the house needs it or not. When I find a particularly large dust ball in the corner, I can see the look of dismay on her face.

I have aged no more gracefully that she did. In fact, I probably haven’t aged as well. Until the day she died at 90 years of age she kept herself well-groomed and nicely dressed. After the children grew up and moved away, my parents could afford quality items for themselves and my mother began to dress quite nicely. She wore well-tailored, well-made clothes far nicer than I even own, much less wear. Blue jeans suit me just fine, and my idea of dress pants is black jeans.

We do become our parents in a multitude of ways, some obvious and some not so obvious. I hope I have become my mother in all the ways that count and that make me a better human being. I would feel great pleasure to know my life reflects and does justice to the memory of an exceptional woman who lived an ordinary life on the one hand, but a life that positively influenced many, many people, a fact that became obvious when community members paid their respects at her funeral.

It’s too late now to apologize to my mother for my youthful arrogance and disrespect, but I suspect she would forgive me in an instant. In fact, I know she already has.

4 Super Nutritious Berries You Can Grow Here

We

all know strawberries and raspberries grow easily in our mountain climate.

Both are highly nutritious sources of antioxidants, Vitamin C and other vitamins and minerals. Blueberries are also super-nutritious but harder to grow here, where soils tend to be too alkaline for them.

What about other more unusual nutritious berries you might be reading about? Some, such as acai, grow in subtropical climates. Here are four we can grow easily: 1. Honeyberries (Lonicera caerulea), in the honeysuckle genus and native to Eastern Russia, are an excellent source of Vitamin C and antioxidants.

Four good varieties that are available to plant are: Berry Blue, Borealis, Cinderella and Tundra. You will need to plant two different varieties within 50 feet of each other for pollination.

Honeyberry shrubs grow to three to four feet. The fruit is larger than a blueberry but similar in taste. They can be eaten fresh or made into jams or jellies, and pies. Easy to grow and not fussy, they prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Although honeyberries are drought tolerant, these shallow-rooted plants will need frequent

watering at first until they become established. They bear on one-year growth, so do not prune back the tips where the flowers and then the fruit will be. Use netting to deter birds.

Honeyberries will ripen here in July.

2. Jostaberries (Ribes x culverwelii), a cross between black currants and gooseberries, are an excellent source of Vitamin C. They are self-fruitful, but you might want to plant more than one plant so you get plenty of fruit.

Jostberries make good jam and are supposed to be tastier than black currants. Like the honeyberry, they need to be netted from the birds.

3. Elderberry (Sambucus Canadensis) is a large (eight to 10 feet) hardy native shrub that produces bluishblack fruit in bunches of little berries. It is antioxidant-rich and high in Vitamins A and C, other vitamins and minerals. The fruit is good for wine, juice, pies, jelly and jam but is quite bitter for eating fresh.

You get better pollination of elderberries with two different varieties, such as York and Adams. Prune out old wood after three years or so on this fast-growing shrub. Birds like to eat elderberries too, so net them if you plan to harvest.

4. Glossy Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) is another easy-to-grow shrub, native to the Eastern U.S. It

grows to four to five feet tall. It has fragrant white flowers that mature into dark purple-black berries with high levels of antioxidants, anthocyanins and flavonoids. Although sour when eaten raw (hence the name chokeberry), the berries make good juice, syrup, wine, jam and jelly. Chokeberry shrubs

are relatively pest-free and drought resistant. An added bonus is their beautiful red-orange fall leaf color.

Plant these shrubs to make your yard not just beautiful but fruitful. If you can’t make your own, Rocky Creek Farms east of Bozeman sells a delicious jelly made from chokeberries.

delicious. To start, pick a nutrientrich base for a green salad.

“When it comes to salad greens, iceberg lettuce ranks the lowest in overall nutrient content,” she said.

“Choose a base with more color, such as romaine lettuce, red leaf lettuce, spinach, arugula or a baby green variety.”

Colorful greens add Vitamin K (blood clotting powers, strong bone builder, heart disease prevention), Vitamin C (immune system booster, eye disease prevention), Vitamin A (bad bacteria repellent, bone growth helper) and iron (protein metabolizer, hemoglobin and red blood cell production) to a salad.

Don’t forget the baby kale next time you’re scanning the produce at the grocery store or farmers market. Baby kale is milder than its grownup kale counterpart and has a less fibrous texture but nearly identical nutrient content. Organic ingredients also offer a nutrient boost, she said.

Some produce is best purchased from the organic section, if possible.

The “dirty dozen” list from the Environmental Working Group names the fruits and veggies most heavily sprayed with pesticides: strawberries, nectarines, peaches, apples, celery, grapes, cherries, spinach, tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, hot peppers and kale.

Whether you toss a green salad, a fruit salad or a combination of the two, take the dirty dozen list to the store to help guide you. Cut yourself some slack if you cannot afford or find organic produce.

“If an organic option is not available, consider what other food you may choose instead of salad,” Kordick said. “If that replacement is not a healthy

choice, you are better off choosing non-organic produce because you will still receive higher quality nutrients than you would from processed foods.”

After choosing the right produce, it’s easy to start daydreaming about the good stuff – croutons, cheese and dressing. Not so fast! Adding those ingredients is a quick way to add calories.

“If you are looking for more, opt for crunchy vegetables such as cucumber, bell pepper, chopped carrots, celery or corn,” Kordick said. “Don’t underestimate the flavor that chopped onion can bring to a salad. Sprinkle your salad with a no-sodium-added seasoning mixture such as Mrs. Dash for a flavor boost as well.”

Herbs are another way to add zest to a salad without adding calories.

Basil, parsley, cilantro, chives, dill and lemongrass are flavorful picks. For salad dressing, cut the sodium and stock your cupboards with a variety of oils and vinegars to whip up your own low-sodium, high-flavor dressing. Kordick has a homemade ranch dressing to fix your hankering in a healthy way.

If you simply can’t stomach a green salad, Kordick has you covered.

“Salads do not have to have greens as a base. Chopped salads can add variety to your typical salad routine.”

If you are a potato salad enthusiast, pick red potatoes or sweet potatoes as a healthier option. Use Greek yogurt or vinegar-based dressing instead of heavy mayonnaise. For a summer barbecue, use beans or grains, such as quinoa or kamut, as delicious replacements for starch-based salads. If fruit salad is your passion, kick the apples and bananas, which brown quickly, to add longevity to your salad.

Grilled Potato Salad

Serves 6

Health-ified Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing

4 red potatoes, sliced into 1 inch pieces 4 yellow potatoes, sliced into 1 inch pieces 2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and chopped coarsely 1 cup baby arugula leaves, chopped 1/2 cup pitted kalamata olives, halved 1/2 cup banana pepper rings 1 Tbsp capers 3 Tbsp red wine vinegar 2 Tbsp olive oil, divided 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes 1/2 tsp dried parsley flakes 1 tsp ground mustard 1/2 tsp salt Fresh ground black pepper Place potato slices into a medium bowl. Drizzle with 1 Tbsp olive oil and toss to coat. Place slices onto a medium-high heated grill. Grill potatoes for about 4 minutes on each side, until grill marks appear.When slices are cooked, remove from heat and allow to cool.

Whisk together vinegar, remaining olive oil, parsley, red pepper flakes, ground mustard, salt and pepper.

Stir in pepper rings, chopped tomatoes, olives and arugula. Set aside.

When potatoes have cooled, cut each slice into quarters and gently fold chunks into vinegar mixture.

Serve immediately!

1 cup low fat buttermilk 2/3 cup light sour cream 1/4 cup champagne vinegar 2 Tbsp chopped fresh chives 1-1/2 Tbsp chopped fresh dill 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp celery salt 1/2 tsp celery seed 1 tsp fresh parsley, chopped finely 1/4 tsp fresh thyme, chopped 1/4 tsp fresh ground black pepper 1/2 tsp fresh rosemary, chopped Whisk together all ingredients in a large glass container. Refrigerate until serving. Will keep for about 1 week sealed in refrigerator.

We don’t want to get the wrong system. I think that as they become more common, we’ll see them as a standard piece of equipment or expectation within the profession. I don’t want to jump in haphazardly though.

Prime’s Conversation with Chief Crawford, Part 2

his month, Steve Crawford began his second year as Bozeman’s Police Chief. In his 22 years with the department, he has served as a patrolman, patrol sergeant, captain of the patrol and detective divisions, and been on the Special Response Team and Drug Task Force.

Prime interviewed him in April. In Part 1, published in May, he discussed bringing the department to full staff (65 officers), community policing and his views on recent law enforcement controversies nationwide. Here is Part 2.

Q: Are body cameras coming to Bozeman?

A: Body cameras fall into the category

of things I’m watching nationally and regionally. At some point we probably will employ some, but they’re not on the immediate radar. They are not a simple fix. Sometimes they’re perceived as this automatic fix to police accountability, but they are more complex than that.

It is true that when you have a body camera on, in general, people tend

to behave better. Both sides tend to behave better.

That said, body cameras also represent the government with a camera in your house.

That can erode or potentially impair community trust. I’m sensitive to that.

I want to make sure our community is ready for that. We’ve had dash cameras a lot longer than some big agencies have. We also have a digital recorder policy. When our officers are investigating a crime, they record all of that.

We capture and document an event pretty well recording-wise.

I think the technology will continue to evolve rapidly. A lot of the cameras don’t necessarily catch everything. They catch a narrow view of a particular scene.

They’re not a magic bullet. They are one more tool in the toolbox. I think there’s a place for them. I just want to make sure our community is ready for them.

Also, I don’t want to get the wrong technology. I want to learn from the experiences of my peer agencies as they implement these programs.

Lastly, a huge data management piece

Q: What issues most concern you right now?

A: The public safety issues that come

with community growth. Before the recession, growth was very dramatic in the valley. With that came a lot of construction and temporary residents here just to do those projects. That had some public safety side issues downtown, alcohol-related issues. When the recession hit and the Bakken oil boom took off, a lot of those quality of life and safety issues went to North Dakota.

Now growth has returned to Bozeman. I want to be prepared for the public safety issues that come with the growth.

Q: What’s your three- to five-year plan and wish list for the community?

A: We’re going to conduct an analysis to make sure we’re adequately staffed, and look to continue to strengthen our partnership with the community and keep Bozeman the safest it can be.

Q: And you’re not at 65 yet, which is fully staffed for the department?

A: No. We’re currently at 64, and we’re going to hire our 65th. I’ve got some folks who can retire. That’s something you see industrywide. Departments tend to be always hiring police officers.

One of my goals is to get to full staff and be hiring for an eligibility list so we will be able to start new officers

while the person who is going to retire is still here. It’s about six months from hire date to the time a new officer is fully functioning independently.

Broadly, I’m keeping in tune with what’s going on nationally and learning from the experiences of other agencies and communities. I want the department to remain progressive, cutting edge and employing best practices as a law enforcement agency.

Within that, a couple of big projects are underway: the new Law and Justice Center, and working with the 911 director to resolve our radio infrastructure issues.

Q: Make your case for the Law and Justice Center.

A: I want to mainly speak to the joint Law Enforcement Facility. As designed right now it is a very efficient building that is essentially 50 percent shared space. It truly is consolidating a sheriff’s office and a police department into one facility. Fifty percent will be shared conference rooms, shared evidence areas, shared patrol report writing areas, interview rooms, locker rooms and training rooms.

There’s an efficiency and economical advantage. The intangible, real advantage to that setup is the communication and teamwork between the two agencies. You get better city-county law enforcement because we do work together. A lot of our cases don’t respect the boundary of the city limits.

We’re both working the same suspects and issues.

We’ve been located together in the old Catholic high school that is the Law and Justice Center since 1994.

From officer level to the Sheriff and Chief we get along very well. That facility will enable that synergy to continue and grow, and truly makes for greater public safety.

Q: Is the opposition to where the building is going to be or to the cost?

A: Well, the whole project is bigger than just the Bozeman Police Department or the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office. It’s also Bozeman Municipal Courts, Gallatin County Justice Courts, District Courts, Youth Probation, Gallatin County Victim Witness Services, Gallatin County Attorney’s Office and the Bozeman City Prosecutor’s Office. It is one project but two buildings, and all of the criminal justice entities have as great a need as the police department and the sheriff’s office. We’re all in a substandard building that wasn’t built to be an emergency services building; it’s one earthquake away from disaster. From a security perspective, there are concerns that the project would address as well. I think that if there are concerns with the cost of the project we need to remember

that this is a project designed to address the needs of all criminal justice services for Bozeman and Gallatin County.

Q: What’s your wish list?

A: I wouldn’t say that I have a wish list. My wish is to keep Bozeman the safest place that it can be and to make the department a leader in the state in public safety and law enforcement, and to make both the community and the department better than I found them. That’s my wish list.

As we conduct the staffing analysis, we may identify some personnel needs.

But I want to have the data to back that up. There are a few things in the short term that we may want to add or tweak. If I have an unfulfilled wish list, it is addressing the radio system needs, though we are making progress in that area and have a promising radio testing project coming up.

EVENTS ■ Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program: The SFMNP is a program through the United States Department of Agriculture, which allows participants to purchase locally-grown, unprocessed produce at farmers’ markets. Each participant gets 25 $2.00 coupons for a total of $50.00 per market season. Income guidelines are as follows: 1 person household = $21,978; 2 person household =$29,637. Applications available at the front desk.

■ Hiking Program begins Tuesday, June 7, 8:30am! June-September, Tuesdays.

No prior experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and work with children. Summer camp dates are July 11-15, July 25-29 and August 1-5. Hours are 9-3 ■ AMERICAN RED CROSS: Volunteers needed for 3 different areas. Blood Drive Ambassador needed to welcome, greet, thank and provide overview for blood donors. Team Leader volunteers who can help recruit, train and schedule Donor Ambassadors and Couriers. Community Outreach Specialist who would seek out locations to set up a table to sign up prospective volunteers and/or blood donors. Excellent customer service skills needed. Training will be provided. Flexible schedule.

■ AMERICAN RED CROSS: Donor Ambassador needed. This would be someone who greets and assists blood donors at various blood drives. Blood drives can be held at the Bozeman Red Cross center or in the community. At the center the blood drives are on Friday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Looking for a volunteer who can work one or more 4 hour shifts per month, preferably someone who can commit to the same schedule each month.

■ BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS MENTORS: Make a difference in the life of a child by being a positive role model for only a few hours each week

■ USE YOUR SKILLS AND INTERESTS: Your unique skills and interests are needed for a variety of ongoing and onetime events. Please call to find out how we can match you with exactly the right volunteer situation to meet your needs.

■ THREE FORKS FOOD BANK: Volunteer needed on Mondays and/ or Thursday’s to help with administrative duties, including answer phones and questions, some paper and computer work. They will train.

■ CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: have a number of openings for the NPS Centennial Park County Days Aug.14th thru Aug. 21st at various locations in town. Each day has a different event.

■ LIVINGSTON’S FLY FISHING FAIR: is Aug. 2nd to Aug. 6th. Volunteers needed to help in several areas at the High School.

■ YELLOWSTONE GATEWAY MUSEUM: Always in need of someone to man the front desk and help catalog and label items. It’s a great way to learn about our local history.
